Amos looks thoughtful for a moment before replying. "As long as such abilities will not be expected of me, I do not care what the orb says, I suppose." He almost seems to dismiss the matter but then turns back to the guard and asks quietly, "These orbs, what are they called?"

The guard seems a bit taken off guard by the question then looks over at their commander who replies, "We call them Revealing Orbs."

Amos smiles and nods in gratitude. He will not resist should they try to place one of the bracers on him.

Balgar stares at the bracelet intrigued "I'm not against your custom and policies but what are those supposed to do? I like to know what people put on me"
Feb 23, 2021 7:39 pm
The guard matter-of-factly replies, 'They restrict your ability to use magic while it is worn."
Feb 23, 2021 7:45 pm
Belgar looks at the bracelet with visible signs of disdain "Well I guess you really make sure no one is 'armed'..." He looks at the others who don't seem to bother that much "Fine, but lets do this quick"

"A druid." Ulfgar adds in response to the orbs reading "and hopefully by the next time, we trust each other enough that such precautions are no longer needed, yes?" not entirely happy with the suppression of his connection to the natural world.

The guard responds to Ulfgar, "Just protocols every non-garrison member goes through the same thing, regardless of race or privilege."
OOC:
Sorry been contemplating a hidden issue, trying to figure out how I want to go forward with it should be moving the group along soon-ish

With the registering of each individuals magical affiliation and the snapping in place of those dark metal bracers the group experiences something they have not in a long time, if ever.

Arjaak, Karg, and Ulfgar feel a stark emptiness inside as they become completely disconnected from their source of magic and their patron and the world takes on a much grayer and uglier appearance.

Belgar'ath experiences something similar in that his connection to the Weave that flows through all things gets shutdown, and that bracer becomes an annoying irritant next to his skin. Like a thousand misquitoes all biting at once.

Amos on the other hand initial experiences a peace he has not known for a long time, however this quickly turns into gut wrenching pain that begins mildly but then begins to slowly intensify.

With everyone secured the guard says, "Okay, follow me," and begins walking towards the fort. The guard leads the group across the bridges expanse and the group is followed by two other guards. Below the bridge is just cliffs and dark water. On the opposite side is a wooden palisade with a gate that is about half the height of the Forts 30 foot walls that encloses the area directly in front of the gatehouse itself. The stark difference between the wood and the old but very solid looking stone is quite noticeable making the palisade seem even more inferior than it is. This little courtyard of sorts is filled with a handful of men, numerous small barrels holding ammo and even a small catapult. However perhaps the most noticeable things within the courtyard sit just inside the gate on either side, a pair of sturdy tierces (aka @40 gallon barrel) painted bright red.

The group passes through this little courtyard uneventfully only drawing some glances from curious guards. They then pass under the open exterior portcullis through then gatehouse and then under the interior portcullis. Those experienced in castle design could easily see the the murder holes and ceiling holes used to decimate any trapped units. The gatehouse opens into another courtyard that surrounds the 3 story fortified stone building that sits in the middle. If there were stables they were most likely around back because they could not be seen from here. Sitting on the steps of of this building is a old looking Gnome smoking a strange looking three-bowl pipe, he watches the group as they approach with seemingly casual interest but says nothing. The guard leads them up the short stairs and opens the stout door fairly easily and turns to check on the group.

Amos closes his eyes immediately after the bracer clicks into place, his instinct to relish the inner tranquility. Then, perhaps amplified by the contrast of the momentary euphoria, the pain hits and his eyes shoot open. He takes a step back from the guard who had just placed the bracer on him and enters a fighting stance, believing the bracers to have been a trap. He quickly notices that although the others all wear strange looks, no one appears to be in any pain as he was. As he had trained himself most of his life, he turned his mind inward. He began counting his breath to calm his nerves and then sent his mind's focus to the pain itself. He utilized a form of meditation he had used many times in the past, where he delved into the sensation of pain and used it as his focus. In most cases of minor pain, this was often enough to erase the sensation of pain altogether. This pain seemed to barrel through his attempts at holding it and continued to intensify.

As they were led further in, Amos progressively showed more and more signs of strain as he wrestled with the pain. Perspiration ran down his face and the front of his undershirt was visibly soaked through. He notices none of the sights they pass.

As the bracer closes on his wrist Belgar'ath starts to feels itchy.
But what was an intriguing sensation soon becomes an irritating feeling hard to ignore.
As they pass through the courtyard, he constantly try move the bracer around and scratch underneath it.
And even though he would like to take a closer look at the funny looking red barrels or the catapult or the palissade or fort stonework, he just wants to get this over with be out of there.
Looking at the others Belgar'ath find some comfort in the fact that some of his companions appeared more affected by than him.

"Hey Amos! Hang on. This is only a bad moment. We'll forget all about later around a good bottle of rhum... Or anything strong they got here"
Mar 1, 2021 10:22 pm
Amos nods in acknowledgement of Belgar'ath's comment though does not speak. He was not certain he could sound composed if he spoke right now, and he did not want to invite more questions. Only a moment... He hoped the gnome was right.

Registering that all are still present he enters letting the person behind him take the door. As the group passes through the door they step into a 20 foot wide hallway and once the two rear guards, have entered, the door is closed completely shutting out the exterior light as there are no windows within the hallway and so finely are the doors set not even a crack of light can be seen about them. Still the evenly spaced wall sconces provide ample light to the hallway but whose fires are noticed to give off no smoke which indicates that some sort of magic was at work here.

While there is a door to either side, the lead guard instead moves down the hallway turning left heading up some stairs. Past the stairs is another pair of double doors and off to the right a set of stairs going down. At the top of the stairs the guard again turns left and heads to the only door which is on his left and opens it indicating that the group should enter. Once they have passed through the door the guard closes it behind him.

Inside the room sitting at a desk is a Dwarf and standing beside him is an Elf. Their manner of dress, indicates they are also paladins and the dwarf speaks, "Greetings here to join the garrison?"
Mar 8, 2021 4:38 am
"Yes, but this better be fast, so I can get these things off, or I might change my mind." growls Karg. The bracers caused him to become woozy, disoriented, and not happy. Thinking they were harmless at first, he complied, but now he feels cut off from Dukagsh and a little betrayed. However he has noticed that Amos clearly has it worse than he does, so he was bearing it silently until now. "You should at least take them off of Amos. He looks like he might need medical attention if this goes on much longer! I really don't see why these were necessary..."
Mar 8, 2021 5:47 am
"Well they are standard protocol for anyone not part of the garrison who wishes to enter the garrison, we do have enemies and magic can be very difficult to thwart if allowed in unchecked. The process is fairly simply though if you wish to move things along quickly Weimin will simply administer the oath," he gestures to the Elf, "and the bracer comes right off. If your friend truly needs medical attention than Weimin or I will gladly attend to him, however we have never had anyone experience more than discomfort so this is extremely unusual."
Mar 8, 2021 5:50 am
As Kustaa is finishing his explanation Weimin moves over to the other desk and turns a wooden pedestal sitting beside around to face the group and then pulls out an orb. "Please step up and take this orb in your left hand and recite this words written here, if you cannot read I can recite them for you and you can just repeat them."
OOC:
I hereby enter into this oath willingly and of my own volition.
For as long as I carry the mark of the Garrison of Bridgefort I
will do my best to protect Bridgefort, Southbridge Village and
its law-abiding citizens from harm of any sort. So be it thus forth
Mar 8, 2021 3:33 pm
Normally, Amos might have given more thought to entering this sort of magical contract. In these circumstances though, he is the first to stumble forth and grabs the orb from Weiman. He recites the oath in broken fragments, taking a few deep breaths at odd intervals to steady himself.

As if the process had taken the last of his energy, upon saying "So be it...thus forth" through gritted teeth, Amos slumps to his hands and knees. The orb rolls out of his hand and into Weiman's foot. He raises a shaking arm to present the bracer. "Please..."
Mar 8, 2021 7:47 pm
Upon speaking the last words the bracer pops open but the pain does not immediately subside. Weimin reaches a hand down and touches Amos shoulder while retrieving the now non-functioning bracer. As he does this pain relieving warmth flows from his hand into Amos' body and he helps Amos return to his feet, seeming to be much stronger than he appears. "This is very odd, are you cursed some how?" he asks Amos.

After Amos responds and denotes he is okay, Weimin retrieves the orb and readies himself for the next person, "Next."

Secret Roll

Belgar'ath steps forward, grabs the orb and starts to recite the oath.
He was not a fan of oaths but he could see they sometimes had their uses.
This one was inline with his interests and he really meant to do his best to help the people of this region.
As for whether his best was enough for them or not... Well it was not his problem.
