The rutted track emerges from a wooded hillside, and you catch your first glimpse of Phandalin. The town consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings, some built on old fieldstone foundations. More old ruins -crumbling stone walls covered in ivy and briars- surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past. Most of the newer buildings are set on the sides of the cart track, which widens into a muddy main street of sorts as it climbs toward a ruined manor house on a hillside at the east side of town.
As you approach, you see children playing on the town green and townsfolk tending to chores or running errands at shops. Many people look up as you approach, but all return to their business as you go by.
Sildar seems much more at ease. "My friends," he says, "let us secure lodgings. I'm told the local inn is very quaint."

Despite the presence of people, it's growing towards dusk, and before long most shops should be starting to close up for the night, so any errands or chores that you wish completed today should be taken care of soon, or they'll have to wait until morning.

Alstaer breathes a sigh of relief as they approach the town and even manages a weak smile as Sildar mentions an inn. A nice meal and a warm bath surely would be of good use right now. "The inn sounds great. The rest can surely wait until tomorrow?"

"Agreed, Alstaer. I think we all rest for the night, and regroup tomorrow."

In the center of town stands a large, newly built roadhouse of fieldstone and rough-hewn timbers. The common room is filled with locals nursing mugs of ale or cider, all of them eyeing you with curiosity.

The proprietor of this inn stands behind the bar and eyes you warily as you enter. He's a human male, but short in stature, and you see him stiffen noticeably as you saunter up to him. "Hello, gentlemen. Haven't seen you folks in town before. Name's Toblen. Toblen Stonehill. What can I do for you?"

"Greetings, Toblen. We've been long on the road and are weary from our travels and goblin scum. Are there any rooms available to rent for my compatriots and I?"

Osvaldo notices his demeanor chance from apprehensive to more relaxed at discovering that your party is in fact travelers in search of an inn. "Indeed," he replies in a friendly tone. "I have six rooms available upstairs at the moment. If you don't mind a more communal layout, three rooms have three double-stacked bunks each and will comfortably fit six travelers and their gear. One room has two large beds which sleep two travelers side-by-side each. Another room has one large bed that comfortably sleeps two travelers side-by-side, if privacy is more to your tastes. And our final room has an extra large bed that sleeps four travelers side-by-side. Regardless of your preferences for sleeping accommodations, a evening's rest costs five silver pieces, per person, per night. If you'll be having a hot meal with us this evening, that will be an extra three silver each."

"A meal sounds wonderful, as well as a drink. As for sleeping arrangements, anything softer than the ground will do well for me, I don't take up much room."

"The type of room don't matter, I've slept in worse accomodations. A meal and a drink sound good too." as Osvaldo pays the innkeep from his coin purse.

"Aye! Ale and good meat for me, too. I'll lay my head wherever my comrades wish"

Those that opt for a night's stay in the inn, and a meal, go ahead and mark it off you money inventory (I didn't track money on my spreadsheet for you). This would count as a long rest, but I don't believe this matters for anyone at the moment.
You all sleep quite soundly on beds that seem to embrace you in a soft hug and wake up in the morning feeling well rested, but surprised at just how exhausted you must have been. Looking out the window you find a summer rain coming down in in heavy sheets, and as you head downstairs to the common area for breakfast you see that already buckets have been placed on the ground to catch the leavings of a couple of errant leaks.

"Good mornin'," a server says to you. You recognise her from yesterday when you spoke briefly with Toblen. "Looking for a hot breakfast to start your day?"

"Aye, for the whole lot of us. What's good to eat here?"

"I always recommend my Perpetual Stew when asked for make a suggestion. This morning the pot's thick with a lamb, potatoes, and a bit o' leftover quail.
What brings yeh to Phandalin?"
May 16, 2021 4:41 pm
"That stew sounds amazing. A hearty bowl for my compatriots and I would be much appreciated. As to what brings us here ..." Osvaldo gives a quick recount of of what happened (the ambush, cave, ending the bugbear, and finding Sildar). He waits to see if his compatriots want to add on to the story and Toblen's reaction.

This isn't Toblen, this is one of the women you saw serving food and drinks in the Tavern last night when you checked in and ordered dinner. You discover, however, during the course of your breakfast, that the woman is in fact Trilena Stonehill, wife of Toblen. As Osvaldo recounts the tale of the party, which is often interrupted when Trilena has to help another of the inn's guests or give some instructions to another serving girl or whomever's working in the kitchen, the ranger notices that Trilena often returns to listen to more of his recounting, and that seems particularly transfixed during the parts where you describe the battles you've all engaged in and emerged victorious from.
Curiously though, after Osvaldo finishes his story, Trilena seems quiet, as if stewing on her own thoughts. She bustles back and forth, cleaning up dishes left on tables, and serving other guests up for the day and ready for some breakfast. Eventually as Osvaldo and the rest of the party finishes their meals she says to him in a friendly but reserved tone, "That'll be twelve silver for the stew." She waits for him to pay up and continues. "Barthen's Provisions is where you need to drop off your supplies. Just out the door and to the right; it was the first building on the left when you came in on the Triboar Trail last night. And the Lionshield Coster is out the door and to the left a little ways, for your new companion's supplies."
After collecting payment from Osvaldo she will make herself busy tidying up the place, wiping down counters and tables, etc.

"Surly lass, isn't she?", Severus says casually as he slides 4 silver pieces towards Osvaldo
May 18, 2021 3:44 pm
Osvaldo and Alstaer can't really make heads or tails as to Trilena's strange demeanor. Only that she seems to be holding her tongue about something.
May 18, 2021 9:17 pm
Alstaer frowns as he watches the woman leave the table, leaning in towards his companions he speaks in a low voice, "That was weird...anyone else getting the sense that she was holding something back?"
May 19, 2021 10:11 am
"What of it?", Severus asks dismissively. "We need to get our gold and decide what to do about Gundren Rockseeker. Do any of you know much of his warrior, Sildar Hallwinter? I’m assuming Hallwinter will want to find his master, but...", the barbarian shrugs. "Anyway, what are we to do, that’s the question"
