The rutted track emerges from a wooded hillside, and you catch your first glimpse of Phandalin. The town consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings, some built on old fieldstone foundations. More old ruins -crumbling stone walls covered in ivy and briars- surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past. Most of the newer buildings are set on the sides of the cart track, which widens into a muddy main street of sorts as it climbs toward a ruined manor house on a hillside at the east side of town.
As you approach, you see children playing on the town green and townsfolk tending to chores or running errands at shops. Many people look up as you approach, but all return to their business as you go by.
Sildar seems much more at ease. "My friends," he says, "let us secure lodgings. I'm told the local inn is very quaint."

Despite the presence of people, it's growing towards dusk, and before long most shops should be starting to close up for the night, so any errands or chores that you wish completed today should be taken care of soon, or they'll have to wait until morning.

Alstaer breathes a sigh of relief as they approach the town and even manages a weak smile as Sildar mentions an inn. A nice meal and a warm bath surely would be of good use right now. "The inn sounds great. The rest can surely wait until tomorrow?"
May 8, 2021 3:26 pm
"Agreed, Alstaer. I think we all rest for the night, and regroup tomorrow."

In the center of town stands a large, newly built roadhouse of fieldstone and rough-hewn timbers. The common room is filled with locals nursing mugs of ale or cider, all of them eyeing you with curiosity.

The proprietor of this inn stands behind the bar and eyes you warily as you enter. He's a human male, but short in stature, and you see him stiffen noticeably as you saunter up to him. "Hello, gentlemen. Haven't seen you folks in town before. Name's Toblen. Toblen Stonehill. What can I do for you?"
May 9, 2021 2:14 am
"Greetings, Toblen. We've been long on the road and are weary from our travels and goblin scum. Are there any rooms available to rent for my compatriots and I?"

Osvaldo notices his demeanor chance from apprehensive to more relaxed at discovering that your party is in fact travelers in search of an inn. "Indeed," he replies in a friendly tone. "I have six rooms available upstairs at the moment. If you don't mind a more communal layout, three rooms have three double-stacked bunks each and will comfortably fit six travelers and their gear. One room has two large beds which sleep two travelers side-by-side each. Another room has one large bed that comfortably sleeps two travelers side-by-side, if privacy is more to your tastes. And our final room has an extra large bed that sleeps four travelers side-by-side. Regardless of your preferences for sleeping accommodations, a evening's rest costs five silver pieces, per person, per night. If you'll be having a hot meal with us this evening, that will be an extra three silver each."

"A meal sounds wonderful, as well as a drink. As for sleeping arrangements, anything softer than the ground will do well for me, I don't take up much room."
May 12, 2021 3:07 am
"The type of room don't matter, I've slept in worse accomodations. A meal and a drink sound good too." as Osvaldo pays the innkeep from his coin purse.

"Aye! Ale and good meat for me, too. I'll lay my head wherever my comrades wish"

Those that opt for a night's stay in the inn, and a meal, go ahead and mark it off you money inventory (I didn't track money on my spreadsheet for you). This would count as a long rest, but I don't believe this matters for anyone at the moment.
You all sleep quite soundly on beds that seem to embrace you in a soft hug and wake up in the morning feeling well rested, but surprised at just how exhausted you must have been. Looking out the window you find a summer rain coming down in in heavy sheets, and as you head downstairs to the common area for breakfast you see that already buckets have been placed on the ground to catch the leavings of a couple of errant leaks.

"Good mornin'," a server says to you. You recognise her from yesterday when you spoke briefly with Toblen. "Looking for a hot breakfast to start your day?"

"Aye, for the whole lot of us. What's good to eat here?"

"I always recommend my Perpetual Stew when asked for make a suggestion. This morning the pot's thick with a lamb, potatoes, and a bit o' leftover quail.
What brings yeh to Phandalin?"
May 16, 2021 4:41 pm
"That stew sounds amazing. A hearty bowl for my compatriots and I would be much appreciated. As to what brings us here ..." Osvaldo gives a quick recount of of what happened (the ambush, cave, ending the bugbear, and finding Sildar). He waits to see if his compatriots want to add on to the story and Toblen's reaction.

This isn't Toblen, this is one of the women you saw serving food and drinks in the Tavern last night when you checked in and ordered dinner. You discover, however, during the course of your breakfast, that the woman is in fact Trilena Stonehill, wife of Toblen. As Osvaldo recounts the tale of the party, which is often interrupted when Trilena has to help another of the inn's guests or give some instructions to another serving girl or whomever's working in the kitchen, the ranger notices that Trilena often returns to listen to more of his recounting, and that seems particularly transfixed during the parts where you describe the battles you've all engaged in and emerged victorious from.
Curiously though, after Osvaldo finishes his story, Trilena seems quiet, as if stewing on her own thoughts. She bustles back and forth, cleaning up dishes left on tables, and serving other guests up for the day and ready for some breakfast. Eventually as Osvaldo and the rest of the party finishes their meals she says to him in a friendly but reserved tone, "That'll be twelve silver for the stew." She waits for him to pay up and continues. "Barthen's Provisions is where you need to drop off your supplies. Just out the door and to the right; it was the first building on the left when you came in on the Triboar Trail last night. And the Lionshield Coster is out the door and to the left a little ways, for your new companion's supplies."
After collecting payment from Osvaldo she will make herself busy tidying up the place, wiping down counters and tables, etc.

"Surly lass, isn't she?", Severus says casually as he slides 4 silver pieces towards Osvaldo
May 18, 2021 3:44 pm
Osvaldo and Alstaer can't really make heads or tails as to Trilena's strange demeanor. Only that she seems to be holding her tongue about something.
May 18, 2021 9:17 pm
Alstaer frowns as he watches the woman leave the table, leaning in towards his companions he speaks in a low voice, "That was weird...anyone else getting the sense that she was holding something back?"
May 19, 2021 10:11 am
"What of it?", Severus asks dismissively. "We need to get our gold and decide what to do about Gundren Rockseeker. Do any of you know much of his warrior, Sildar Hallwinter? I’m assuming Hallwinter will want to find his master, but...", the barbarian shrugs. "Anyway, what are we to do, that’s the question"
May 19, 2021 12:18 pm
"She may have been, but I doubt it's anything to worry about. She probably just enjoyed a good story. As for what to do, the supplies need dropping off, and Sildar needs time to collect gold. Once he does, I'm sure he'll be looking for some help in finding Gundren."

OOC:
Is Barthen's Provisions the first stop in Phandalin this morning then?
May 19, 2021 7:50 pm
OOC:
Yup, I’m good with that
Alstaer nods, "Yeah you’re probably right...still a bit worked up I guess, I’m not used to an adventurer’s life". He laughs awkwardly. "Shall we get going?"
May 20, 2021 10:59 pm
"Aye! Let's do that"
May 21, 2021 6:34 pm
After finishing up with breakfast, the party returns to their room sand gathers their supplies and arranges for the cart to be fastened to their animals, and you head over to Barthen's Provisions. The sign out front simply says "Barthen's Provisions" and below it you see two suns painted on the sign side by side. The sun on the left is just barely peeking over a horizon. The bottom of the sun painted on the right is just barely touching the top of a horizon.
Barthen's is the biggest trading post in Phandalin, and as you tie off your animals and enter, you take a look around. The shelves are stocked with most ordinary goods and supplies, including backpacks, bedrolls, rope, and rations. One thing that you notice is conspicuously not in evidence though is weapons or armor.
An older man in his fifties stands behind the counter, lean and balding. Two younger clerks assist him with restocking shelves, and tending to other matters. "Welcome to Barthen's Provision's gentlemen; I'm Elmar Barthen! You gentlemen are dressed like you're here to supply yourselves for excitement. What goods are you in need of this fine looking morning?"
May 22, 2021 8:33 pm
"Greetings Elmar Barthen, we are in the employ of Gundren Rockseeker, and sent by him from Neverwinter to deliver you goods. But yes, once paid for our services we no doubt will stock up with goods from your fine store. We will need all the help we can get to find our captured employer"

Elmar's face brightens at the mention of Gundren's name, and even more so when he discover's that you've brought goods with you, but it immediately draws concern when you mention the capture of your employer. He looks at you a moment and then turn to his two clerks. "Ander... Thistle... Why don't you head out to our friends' wagons here and start unloading the goods that just arrived." He walks over to a desk and grabs some sort of ledger book and gives it over to one of the clerks, indicating some section on a page with his index finger, and saying, "This one here." The clerk studies the open pages once before taking the book with him and heading outside with the other clerk following.

"It'll only be a moment to get unloaded. Ander and Thistle are nothing if not hard workers." He grabs a broom and starts sweeping behind his counter. "You say Gundren has been captured, did you? That's too bad. Gundren is a good man, and I consider him a friend. I was excited for the man when I heard he'd discovered the lost mine of the Phandelver's Pact in the hills nearby." He shakes his head sadly. "I suppose his brothers ought to be told if they haven't heard already. If there's anything I can do to help you in your search for him, please let me know."
May 23, 2021 11:23 pm
Osvaldo raises an eyebrow at the mention of the lost mine, "Lost mine? Phandelver's Pact?"
May 24, 2021 4:21 pm
"Aye, Phandelver's Pact...
"You see, more than 500 years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver’s Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to its mineral wealth, the mine is said to have contained great magical power. Spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind this energy they discovered into a forge they say was called 'the Forge of Spells'. It's said that magic items could be crafted in this forge, and times were good. Our town of Phandalin, being near the mine, prospered as well until disaster struck in the form of an army of orcs sweeping through the North, laying waste to all in their path.
"This force of orcs, reinforced by evil mercenary wizards, attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magic treasures. Wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing spell battle destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave was lost to all for centuries.
"In that time rumors of buried riches have attracted treasure seekers and opportunists to the area around here, but no one has ever succeeded in locating the lost mine.
Then recently, Gundren and his brothers, Nardo and Thundren, came to town claiming to have discovered the entrance to Wave Echo Cave, and stated their intentions of reopening the mine. But now you say Gindren has gone missing, and I do not think it a coincidence."
May 24, 2021 8:26 pm
Upon hearing the name Wave Echo Cave, Osvaldo has a sudden urge to race jet skis competitively, as if in a veedeoh gayme he heard tales of as a young lad. He shrugs it off.

"The brothers should have kept quiet about that knowledge, if truly the case.
Wouldn't have found themselves in this pickle. Where are Nardo and Thundren now?"
May 24, 2021 8:29 pm
"They have a camp somewhere outside of town, though where exactly I'm not sure. I have not seen them in probably... oh, maybe a tenday I suppose. Should be stopping by any day now to resupply, I imagine."
May 24, 2021 10:27 pm
"A tenday? Maybe the same fate befell the brother's that took Gundren? I don't think we can wait for them to show up; we should seek them out. What say you?", Severus asks as he turns to his comrades.
May 25, 2021 5:41 pm
Alstaer scratches his head and frowns, he’s not keen on taking off so soon after having reached the safety of a settlement again. "I mean...I guess we could...do you know anyone who might have an idea of where they would make camp?"
May 27, 2021 10:24 pm
"There was a fella that traveled with Gundren, quite often. Went by the name of Hallwinter. Was he taken along with Gundren as well?"
May 27, 2021 10:26 pm
"Yes, Sildar Hallwinter. He was taken, but the goblins had no interest in him. We rescued him before we became bugbear soup. We brought him to Phandalin."
May 28, 2021 4:04 pm
"Then perhaps he might now where Gundren's brothers keep camp. If any might know, I should think he'd have a fair idea."

Chit chat begins to wane and Elmar carries on with sweeping his floor, and a short while later Elmar's two assistant's return inside. One of them hands over the book he was given, which Elmer browses a moment, and nods.
"Everything looks accounted for! I believe you were promised ten gold each."
He leaves the room a minute and returns with forty gold pieces, dividing then up equally among the four of you. "Your services are much appreciated. And again, if there's anything I can do to aid you in a search for Gundren, please don't hesitate to ask."

"Well it sounds like we are still waiting on Hallwinter. In the mean time, we have another stop to make at the Lionshield Coster, as well as any resupplying we'll need to do before setting out again."

"Yes, Bug, let's not dally any longer", turning to the Merchant, Severus smiles and says, "Thank you Mr Barthen, wish us luck"
Jun 4, 2021 8:19 pm
The party leaves Barthen's Provisions and heads left. About 250'-300' southwest you arrive at the Loinshield Coster.
Quote:
Hanging above the front door of this modest trading post is a sign shaped like a wooden shield with blue lion painted on it.
Entering the building you see a woman in her mid-thirties behind a counter. "Welcome to the Lionshield Coster," she says in a sharp and to-the-point tone. "What's your business?"

"Well hello to you too. We came upon these supplies, absconded by goblins, and noticed they belonged to you. We're here to return them. Osvaldo retorts in the same sharp-and-to-the-point tone.
Jun 5, 2021 6:11 pm
"You 'came' upon them, eh?" The woman gives Osvaldo a suspicious look and brings her hands low behind the counter. "Well that's quite unfortunate for whomever 'lost' these goods, and very fortunate for you fine upstanding fellows who just happend to 'come upon' them in the possession of 'goblins' now isn't it?"

Suddenly the woman's arms fly up again from behind the counter and you see a crossbow in her hands, pointed directly at Osvaldo's chest. "And let me guess... You're here to claim your reward?!? You're here to deliver a small percentage of the goods for a small fee, and hold onto the large portion of our shipment until the Lionshield Coster pays a ransom to have them delivered?!? Huh!?! Something like that, now is it?
"Let me guess; you're with the Redbrands. Well if yeh are, be off with you! I'll not be payin' ransom for my own goods. 'Tis coin I'd rather spend on a unit o' mercenaries, to see that all of your heads are stacked at base of the Phandalin sign at the edge o' town! Bugger of with yeh! And touch my shipments again and you'll see just how valuable the Lionshield Coster's coin is, when you watch it spill out the pockets of your killer!"
Jun 5, 2021 7:30 pm
Osvaldo is taken aback a bit by the brazenness of the shopkeeper, but doesn't back down. In a calm, even tone he says "Aye, taken by raiding goblins not far from here, and stashed in their hideout. Sildar Hallwinter can vouch for us, seeing as we rescued him from those same goblins, and happened to find your items tucked away in their cave. We don't want your money, and I've no idea who the Redbrands are. Now if you lower you crossbow, I'd appreciate it."

I can roll Persuasion if you'd like. Didn't see an Aid/Support option in the crb, in case others would like to assist, seeing as I've got a -1 mod. Also, not sure if I asked this already, but is there a common/local knowledge check I can make about the Redbrands?

That's a good Question. I guess the closest thing I could come up with would be to make an Investigation (Int) check? Otherwise I would say make a general Intelligence check, but Investigation is Intelligence anyway so I think if you have some proficiency in that skill, you might as well make it work for you.

Works for me. Want me to roll a Persuasion as well?

Rolls

Investigation - (1d20+1)

(4) + 1 = 5

I don't think you need to, you roleplayed it well enough and mentioned Sildar's name....
Osvaldo doesn't recognise the name "Redbrand", but at the mention of Sildar Hallwinter's name, he notices the hard edge in her eyes relax a bit and she takes a moment to stare at him, he face screwed in a ponderous expression, then lowers her crossbow.
"I apologise. Our shipments have a habit of being intercepted by bandits and highwaymen.
I thought you might be associated with them. Perhaps one of the Redbrands having gotten bold enough to sell us back our own goods. But if you say Hallwinter will vouch for you then that's good enough for me. You say that you actually found one of our shipments in a goblin hideout, eh?"

She comes around from behind the counter and moves outside to examine the cargo waiting outside. After taking a turn around the wagon, she nods. "Looks like it all here, more or less. Listen, I appreciate you returning this to us. The Lionshield Coster would gladly reward you 50 gold for your troubles. If you'd like to step inside while I get it for you, I'll have someone unload your cart

Severus' raises hos eyebrows and shrugs his broad shoulders. "It'd be rude to decline now, wouldn't it?"
Jun 8, 2021 4:03 pm
The woman, who you soon learn is named Linene Graywind, is master of the Phandalin post of the Lionshield Coster, a merchant company based in the city of Yartar, over a hundred miles to the east. She makes some small talk as she counts out your reward, asking about the goblin attack on the shipment, asking about Sildar, and generally gathering in information about the goings on outside of town.
By the time the wagon is unloaded, you've been given 50 gold to be split however you see fit. She thanks you for your services in seeing that the shipment was returned to its proper owner and tells you if you ever need work, she'd gladly hire you.
Jun 8, 2021 9:20 pm
"Well now, Madam Graywind. These brigands you mentioned, what were they called? What would it be worth to Phandalin to be rid of them I wonder?"
Jun 9, 2021 5:09 pm
"They call themselves the Redbrands. They seem to make the Sleeping Giant their watering hole of choice, and they've been causing trouble for some time now, and only getting more bold. Was an incident only a few days ago.
Man went missin', family taken... Trilena, the innkeeper's wife know the details more's I do."
Jun 9, 2021 7:45 pm
"Hmmm", Severus grunts as he turns to Osvaldo. "Never liked bullies. Never met a Redbrand, but I don't like them already. Could be some connection with the goblins? Maybe not, but at least it gives us a reason to go and crush some skulls. What do you think?"
Jun 9, 2021 7:46 pm
Alstaer’s ears perk up at the mention of Trilena. "I guess maybe that could explain her weird behaviour". He sighs and looks at his companions, "Back to the inn then?"
Jun 9, 2021 8:05 pm
"Maybe so, Alstaer. Yes, back to the inn"
Jun 10, 2021 4:36 pm
The party collects their reward and returns to the inn. After having dropped off a good number of suplies at two different outfits in town, it's approaching around 10am when you walk inside. Despite the breakfast meal being about over and the lunch rush yet to arrive, the common room of the inn and tavern holds about half a dozen customers, Trilena and her husband cleaning up and waiting on their patrons. They nod a friendly, if somewhat cautious, "hello" as you walk inside.
Jun 14, 2021 4:35 pm
"Madame Trilena, may we have a word with you when you have a moment?"
Jun 14, 2021 9:04 pm
Busy serving a guest, she looks up at her name. She gives you a curious, if also guarded look, then nods. She finishes setting down some dishes and walks over to another serving girl, whispering something in her ear.
The other girl nods and begins attending to the patron Trilena was helping and Trilena walks behind the bar, waiting expectantly for whatever tou and your newcomer companions wish to discuss with her.
From across the room her husband watches cautiously, but doesn't join his wife quite yet.
Jun 14, 2021 9:29 pm
"Sorry, to take you away from your customers, this won't take very long. Today, we returned goods to Linene Graywind that had been stolen by goblin-kind. For a moment, mistress Graywind said she though we were 'redbrands'. We're minded to pay a visit to these folks because they may be involved in a mystery that almost got us killed. But whether that is so, or no, Linene Graywind said you may be able to give us the lowdown on these unsavouries. Can you?"
Jun 16, 2021 5:56 am
"Aye. Redbrands they are. Bunch of no good thieves and highwaymen making a living by robbing folks coming and going on the road into Phandalin. Lately they been making a habit of sticking around town longer than they used to. Gotten comfortable around here, it seems. Wearing out their welcome if they ever had one.
"Thel Dendrar, a local woodcarver, stood up to the Redbrands a ten day ago when they came by his shop and leered at his wife. The ruffians murdered him. Several townsfolk saw it happen. The Redbrands grabbed his body, and now his wife, daughter, and son have gone missing too."

At that, Trilena's husband Toblen clears his throat. Instead of interjecting with any additional information, he stays silent, but the look on the man's face is almost severe in the cautionary look he gives his wife.

His wife seems to read his face well enough, as she then says, "Anyway, that's just what some folk been saying. We wouldn't know, as the Redbrands seem to leave us be here. Haven't brung any trouble to our inn and tavern. They seem to prefer to spend their "hard earned' coin over at the Sleeping Giant."

Severus says nothing, but his comrades can see his eyes darken and his face begin to get taut, sure signs that the berserk rage is bubbling from the depths of his being.

FInally, a word forms, just one: "scum"
