"You 'came' upon them, eh?" The woman gives Osvaldo a suspicious look and brings her hands low behind the counter. "Well that's quite unfortunate for whomever 'lost' these goods, and very fortunate for you fine upstanding fellows who just happend to 'come upon' them in the possession of 'goblins' now isn't it?"

Suddenly the woman's arms fly up again from behind the counter and you see a crossbow in her hands, pointed directly at Osvaldo's chest. "And let me guess... You're here to claim your reward?!? You're here to deliver a small percentage of the goods for a small fee, and hold onto the large portion of our shipment until the Lionshield Coster pays a ransom to have them delivered?!? Huh!?! Something like that, now is it?
"Let me guess; you're with the Redbrands. Well if yeh are, be off with you! I'll not be payin' ransom for my own goods. 'Tis coin I'd rather spend on a unit o' mercenaries, to see that all of your heads are stacked at base of the Phandalin sign at the edge o' town! Bugger of with yeh! And touch my shipments again and you'll see just how valuable the Lionshield Coster's coin is, when you watch it spill out the pockets of your killer!"

Osvaldo is taken aback a bit by the brazenness of the shopkeeper, but doesn't back down. In a calm, even tone he says "Aye, taken by raiding goblins not far from here, and stashed in their hideout. Sildar Hallwinter can vouch for us, seeing as we rescued him from those same goblins, and happened to find your items tucked away in their cave. We don't want your money, and I've no idea who the Redbrands are. Now if you lower you crossbow, I'd appreciate it."
OOC:
I can roll Persuasion if you'd like. Didn't see an Aid/Support option in the crb, in case others would like to assist, seeing as I've got a -1 mod. Also, not sure if I asked this already, but is there a common/local knowledge check I can make about the Redbrands?

OOC:
That's a good Question. I guess the closest thing I could come up with would be to make an Investigation (Int) check? Otherwise I would say make a general Intelligence check, but Investigation is Intelligence anyway so I think if you have some proficiency in that skill, you might as well make it work for you.

OOC:
Works for me. Want me to roll a Persuasion as well?

Rolls

Investigation - (1d20+1)

(4) + 1 = 5

I don't think you need to, you roleplayed it well enough and mentioned Sildar's name....
Osvaldo doesn't recognise the name "Redbrand", but at the mention of Sildar Hallwinter's name, he notices the hard edge in her eyes relax a bit and she takes a moment to stare at him, he face screwed in a ponderous expression, then lowers her crossbow.
"I apologise. Our shipments have a habit of being intercepted by bandits and highwaymen.
I thought you might be associated with them. Perhaps one of the Redbrands having gotten bold enough to sell us back our own goods. But if you say Hallwinter will vouch for you then that's good enough for me. You say that you actually found one of our shipments in a goblin hideout, eh?"

She comes around from behind the counter and moves outside to examine the cargo waiting outside. After taking a turn around the wagon, she nods. "Looks like it all here, more or less. Listen, I appreciate you returning this to us. The Lionshield Coster would gladly reward you 50 gold for your troubles. If you'd like to step inside while I get it for you, I'll have someone unload your cart

Severus' raises hos eyebrows and shrugs his broad shoulders. "It'd be rude to decline now, wouldn't it?"
Jun 8, 2021 4:03 pm
The woman, who you soon learn is named Linene Graywind, is master of the Phandalin post of the Lionshield Coster, a merchant company based in the city of Yartar, over a hundred miles to the east. She makes some small talk as she counts out your reward, asking about the goblin attack on the shipment, asking about Sildar, and generally gathering in information about the goings on outside of town.
By the time the wagon is unloaded, you've been given 50 gold to be split however you see fit. She thanks you for your services in seeing that the shipment was returned to its proper owner and tells you if you ever need work, she'd gladly hire you.
Jun 8, 2021 9:20 pm
"Well now, Madam Graywind. These brigands you mentioned, what were they called? What would it be worth to Phandalin to be rid of them I wonder?"
Jun 9, 2021 5:09 pm
"They call themselves the Redbrands. They seem to make the Sleeping Giant their watering hole of choice, and they've been causing trouble for some time now, and only getting more bold. Was an incident only a few days ago.
Man went missin', family taken... Trilena, the innkeeper's wife know the details more's I do."
Jun 9, 2021 7:45 pm
"Hmmm", Severus grunts as he turns to Osvaldo. "Never liked bullies. Never met a Redbrand, but I don't like them already. Could be some connection with the goblins? Maybe not, but at least it gives us a reason to go and crush some skulls. What do you think?"
Jun 9, 2021 7:46 pm
Alstaer’s ears perk up at the mention of Trilena. "I guess maybe that could explain her weird behaviour". He sighs and looks at his companions, "Back to the inn then?"
Jun 9, 2021 8:05 pm
"Maybe so, Alstaer. Yes, back to the inn"
Jun 10, 2021 4:36 pm
The party collects their reward and returns to the inn. After having dropped off a good number of suplies at two different outfits in town, it's approaching around 10am when you walk inside. Despite the breakfast meal being about over and the lunch rush yet to arrive, the common room of the inn and tavern holds about half a dozen customers, Trilena and her husband cleaning up and waiting on their patrons. They nod a friendly, if somewhat cautious, "hello" as you walk inside.
Jun 14, 2021 4:35 pm
"Madame Trilena, may we have a word with you when you have a moment?"
Jun 14, 2021 9:04 pm
Busy serving a guest, she looks up at her name. She gives you a curious, if also guarded look, then nods. She finishes setting down some dishes and walks over to another serving girl, whispering something in her ear.
The other girl nods and begins attending to the patron Trilena was helping and Trilena walks behind the bar, waiting expectantly for whatever tou and your newcomer companions wish to discuss with her.
From across the room her husband watches cautiously, but doesn't join his wife quite yet.
Jun 14, 2021 9:29 pm
"Sorry, to take you away from your customers, this won't take very long. Today, we returned goods to Linene Graywind that had been stolen by goblin-kind. For a moment, mistress Graywind said she though we were 'redbrands'. We're minded to pay a visit to these folks because they may be involved in a mystery that almost got us killed. But whether that is so, or no, Linene Graywind said you may be able to give us the lowdown on these unsavouries. Can you?"
Jun 16, 2021 5:56 am
"Aye. Redbrands they are. Bunch of no good thieves and highwaymen making a living by robbing folks coming and going on the road into Phandalin. Lately they been making a habit of sticking around town longer than they used to. Gotten comfortable around here, it seems. Wearing out their welcome if they ever had one.
"Thel Dendrar, a local woodcarver, stood up to the Redbrands a ten day ago when they came by his shop and leered at his wife. The ruffians murdered him. Several townsfolk saw it happen. The Redbrands grabbed his body, and now his wife, daughter, and son have gone missing too."

At that, Trilena's husband Toblen clears his throat. Instead of interjecting with any additional information, he stays silent, but the look on the man's face is almost severe in the cautionary look he gives his wife.

His wife seems to read his face well enough, as she then says, "Anyway, that's just what some folk been saying. We wouldn't know, as the Redbrands seem to leave us be here. Haven't brung any trouble to our inn and tavern. They seem to prefer to spend their "hard earned' coin over at the Sleeping Giant."
Jun 16, 2021 11:10 pm
Severus says nothing, but his comrades can see his eyes darken and his face begin to get taut, sure signs that the berserk rage is bubbling from the depths of his being.

FInally, a word forms, just one: "scum"
