Joan catches Em looking at the base.

"That’s Camp Leader Kim’s bunker… thing. She uses it to keep supplies for the camp. Dry food. Medicine. That kind of thing. Even I’m not allowed in there! So it’ll be the first bus for all of us if she catches us snooping around!"

She turns to the others!

"Come on. Let’s head back. Don’t worry! We have more stuff scheduled for after snack. I think today’s activity is… she checks the clipboard … soccer. 5 vs 5!

But first, its fruit on the grass! Let me check the kitchen for some chocolate. Our secret…"
she puts her fingers to the sides of her mouth and makes the gesture of locking it.

"Alright! Let’s get this wood back!"
OOC:
Will everyone participate in Soccer? Camp is all about getting you out of your comfort zone! Or you can sit out, of course! It’s just day one of camp. Other days will have lots of optional activities for you to pursue your interests. :)

"Soccer?", Mikey asks. "How is that even a vacation, then?" He considers it and then shrugs. "Ah well, it might be fun here. At least my dad won't be watching. And Andy and I can probably single-handedly take on whatever team we end up playing." He looks at his friends: "So you should all play as well. Don't worry if you're not good. We'll cover for you!" He doesn't want to be mean but he does end up looking at Georgie with those last two sentences.
Jul 20, 2021 6:27 am
"Yes, chocolatey, a chocolatey snack," says Em as she stumbles along, her rat by now hungrily rooting around in the military surplus knapsack the girl wears on her back. Her eyes widen when there is mention of soccer, of competition, of... another encounter with another group of kids.

Would it be the stupid old caterpillars?
OOC:
Em will be TERRIBLE at soccer, so of course she's in!
Jul 20, 2021 11:42 am
Georgie actually doesn't mind soccer. He usually just stands at one spot on the field hoping no one kicks the ball to him. He's got a book.

"Oh yeah, that would be gnarly."
Jul 20, 2021 1:24 pm
Yeah! Andy says to Mikey. We'll kill 'em! His competitive instincts kick in at the mention of his favorite sport but he changes course quickly at the mention of chocolate.

Does she really have chocolate? he whispers to Mickey. His mouth starts to water at the idea. He also can't help wondering about the bunker. If no one is allowed there, what might be in it? He decided he would ask the gang when they were alone.

You head back to the open area, just off the water. You dump your sticks and twigs into the pile and then run to join the commotion. Every child at camp is sitting in little clusters of four and five. That initial edge has worn off, as children have found comfort in their assigned groups. Smaller kids in the groups have been taken under the protective wing of the older kids. All in all, a more upbeat atmosphere than the one at the gate earlier.

You scout out a spot for yourselves, and make a break for it before another group comes along to claim it! Joan leaves you to yourself for a few minutes as she heads off to the kitchen to get your snacks. You settle, and take in the sun and hum of conversation around you.

After a few minutes, Joan comes back with a bowl of fruit. Apples, bananas, a kiwi, a few oranges. It looks good, but your heart sinks when she doesn’t give you any chocolate.

"There you go, Rattlesnakes. Enjoy…" she waits for you to look at her and then pushes a piece of chocolate between her teeth for half a second. Her eyes move to the fruit bowl.

"See you later!" and then she’s gone. Stealthily, you lift the fruit and find a bar and a half of chocolate hidden beneath. Not much, but enough for a few pieces each.

And then you have your own time. Half an hour to digest the day so far before soccer!
Jul 20, 2021 11:48 pm
Andy gets the message and goes straight for the fruit. Wow coooool! Andy is ecstatic. He really didn't expect to get any chocolate so this was an amazing surprise.

A bar and a half! Georgie! Do the math will ya and divvy it up for us.
Jul 20, 2021 11:55 pm
Georgie leans back resting his back. "You're really something Andy. The maths day one bar for Spud, the rest of you can squabble for my crumbs!"

He laughs, "Squabble, that's funny!"

He tells them the "exact" right split.

"Hah, awesome!", Mikey grins and immediately reaches for the chocolate before Andy interrupts and tells Spud to calculate how much they all get.
Mikey waits and then takes his share. "If someone doesn't want theirs, give it to me...", he grumbles when he sees how little it is for everyone.

Jaden reaches out to take the little chocolate that is his share while locking his gaze on Mikey
"Like Aerosmith once said, dream on Mikey; dream until your dreams come true. How about that huh?" he said with a smirk and burst into laughter, unable to hide his amusement.

You like that song? Andy asks Jaden as he greedily grabs his share of chocolate. Me too!

He tries to sing the dream on bit while chewing but it comes out somewhat garbled.

You sit and bask in the freedom of it all. The whole summer camp trip stretches out in front of you. Weeks of… this! You talk among yourselves and pick at the fruit. About 20 minutes later, as fruit bowls lay almost empty, save the skins and peels, Mark comes around to put together a list of teams willing to play some soccer. You sign up, a few of you more enthusiastically than others.

The Rattlesnakes are in the mix! Ten minutes after that, Kim Johnson appears again, and blows that whistle loud. With the help of Joan and Mark, she begins to move you over to a pitch, divided to allow several games to go on at once, and lined with faded white paint.

"Bluejays! You’re up. Against Scorpions!"

"Butterflies, move it! You’re facing the Rattlesnakes."

"Beavers. Over here! Crickets, there!" and on and on.

You find your quarter of the field and face off against the other team. Joan stands in the middle of all the games, ready to blow the whistle that would start several games at once. Other kids, not yet having their turn watch and size you up. Checking to see how stiff the competition might be in later games, and other activities.
OOC:
Let’s roll those dice! How do you go about it?

Mikey relies more on speed than on strength when he plays, always trying to dart through gaps between the opponents and being in the right spot. If possible, he'll pass the ball to Andy in order to let him score goals but if something opens up for him, he'll take the shot as well. A couple of times in the game, he'll also pass the ball on to Georgie and Em, though he thinks they're weaker players. Involving them seems more important to him than winning - unless the other team turns out to be assholes like the caterpillars!

Jaden has some experience with the game, but he wasn't ever quite fond of it. His experience has taught him where to look for the opponents' weaknesses and take advantage of that. He has the speed and strength necessary for playing defense; he can definitely make long passes to his teammates. He's extra wary about Em and Spud on the field - those who think that they can make them targets are in for a treat. Winning isn't that serious if you can't walk out of the field after all. He examines their opponents before they start for any first hints he can get from them.

Georgie works out the details of the game. He's done this before, and knows that there are weak spots in the field. On a more used pitch, you could mostly look for the darkest, least trod-upon grass. Here, he needs to worry also about the random abilities of the other children. There are a lot of variables to balance if he wants to get any reading done further into Melanie Rawn's The Dragon Prince, which is written kind of girlishly but he's into that, secretly.

Butterflies? Haha, us Rattlesnakes will kill 'em on the field.

Andy being the obvious striker is front and center. He's used to an audience so he doesn't get nervous about that, but he does want to play well. He is ready to shoot and score if a good pass comes his way or pass to anyone with a clear shot at the goal. He likes to win and would like to do so but he supposes that the others should be included, and he shouldn't be a ball hog.

Use your resources! he hears the coach say in his head.

Butterflies are wimps. We got this!

Morgan enjoys her piece of chocolate when the portions are divvied up by Spud's mad mathery, and the girl rests in the grass with her eyes closed as it melts in her mouth. Kiwi and a few other pieces of fruit complete the snack, and by the time soccer rolls around she's not feeling too terrible about it... but that's also because of Plan B.

Loitering around near the coolers allows the girl a chance to nab a 'church-key' bottle and can opener... a vicious, soccer-ball-deflating implement of destruction that she uses her shoelaces to tie to her right foot. She won't use it unless things are going south -- she knows Andy and Mikey enjoy soccer for some reason -- but she also won't hesitate from her midfielder position to put a complete stop to the match...

So we are clear, she's stealing a weapon and intends to puncture the ball to end the game if things go badly.

You get to your spots on the pitch. You find yourself fidgeting with anticipation. Looking across the line, you see the Butterflies, equally ambitious. But you’ve already dispatched the Caterpillars. And butterflies are pretty much the same thing, aren’t they?

The whistle sounds, and you’re off. Mikey to Andy. To Mikey. Back to Morgan. Jaden jostles with the biggest kid on the Butterflies, sent to mark him, and get a few shots passed the big kid, Spud, sitting in the goal. It’s five minutes a side, so you work fast.

Andy sends one hurtling by the unfortunate child left in the Butterfly goal. It’s almost unfair. Andy’s practiced actions and a skilled foot leave the child no other option but to duck out of the way as it comes in. Mikey follows up with another one a minute later. The striker marking Jaden is screaming for his defenders to get it together. Eventually, he hurtles down the field and gets the ball for himself. He works his way through Em and Mikey, and comes up against Jaden, who jostles him again as he kicks the ball. It meets Georgie’s hands with that loud stinging sound. But he saved it! He quickly grabs it up as he recovers from the impact.

The whistle blows for the first half. The second goes much the same as the first. Even Em manages to get a few shots in on target. One manages to slip by Georgie, to the cheers of the crowd. The game is still on.

Georgie rolls it clumsily to Jaden, who passes it short to Em. She half kicks it properly and it finds it’s way to Mikey. He runs, and shoots. The post. It bounces back out into play and Andy sends it screaming home. Back of the net. It’s a win, and a warning to every other team in attendance.

The Rattlesnakes are the team to beat.

… ole ole ole ole… ole… ole…

Andy was at home out there, sussing out the competition, noting the weak goalie. He was pretty sure the kid wouldn't want to get in the way of his powerful shot and sure enough he was right, and the ball sailed right into the goal.

Yeah Mikey! he shouted when his shot flew into the net. Great pass EM! he shrieked when she assisted a goal. Way to go Georgie! when he made a save.

Yay! Andy was ecstatic, jumping up and down when they won. It was a great win and the entire team was involved! he said patting everyone on the back.
