Chapter 1: Camp Galfer

Jul 29, 2021 2:44 pm
With the help of the frog people Annika, Melianne, Shedinn, Korrin and the rest of the group can traverse the swampy area with relative ease. While the frog people that accompany you only speak rudimentary common it is enough to warn you of any dangers along the way.
The food that the frog emporer provided is... well food at least. Most people in your group don't look forward to their daily rations of worms and green gooey cubes but at least they provide enough energy to keep you going. After two days of travel the swamp ends. Your froggy companions gesture towards the upwards sloping terrain in front of you, wish you farewell and return to the swamp. You ascend the slope in front of you and as you reach the top you can see the camp in front of you. After about another hour of travel you should finally reach your initial destination.
But halfway to the camp you are stopped by a small group of armed men. Two men step forward from the group.
One of them looks like a seasoned adventurer with a weathered face, bright blue eyes and a crooked nose.
The other one looks younger, with a slender but muscular build. He's wielding a warhammer
Scags and Krenmuth sit in the shade of a canopy. Even though the summer is slowly coming to an end the day started sunny and hot.
In your first days at the camp you had to fight off a lot of beasts and some members of a tribe nearby but the last two weeks were pretty uneventful.
The only noticable thing is that a ship that's supposed to bring supplies is running late but currently you have enough supplies to keep you going. Well except for the ale...

Korsak, the leader of the expedition approaches you. He's dressed in his usual linen robes with the emblem of Bridgeton on the chest. His trusty quarterstaff is strapped to his back. He harrumphs and begins to speak.
Scouts have reported to me that a group of humans or humanoids is approaching the camp from the north. I want you to gather a group of soldiers and meet them before they reach this camp.
He produces a small horn with a silver rim and mouthepiece from his pocket.
If they prove to be peaceful you can invite a representative of them to the camp. If they are hostile, you can call help with this horn. I suggest you hurry up, they should be here within an hour.
Korsak gives the horn to Scags and leaves again.
Scags and Krenmuth waste no time and rouse a group of soldiers that are currently playing cards.
With those seven women and men in tow they go off to approach the mysterious group...
Jul 29, 2021 5:40 pm
As the soldiers march in coordinated formation, Krenmuth turns to Scags, "I hope this isn't another group of lost treasure hunters. I almost punched that guide last week when he started arguing with us about where the river was located. I wouldn't be surprised if they walked right into a roper's maw. If you don't mind, you can take the lead with this group."
Jul 29, 2021 8:21 pm
''And if you aren't ready in the next minute, I'll shove those cards up your arses!''

Sardonius let the spit dry off his mouth before moving again towards the north. The incompetent gits have the gall to play cards while a security breach in the camp was imminent. He never expected to take command of a group of people again so soon after his retirement from the Society of Swords. I was here to adventure and to do 'adventuring things'. it's like I never left the company. He let himself a semi-smile remembering the events that happened before today.

He arrived in ''Camp Galfer'' three weeks ago after his boat arrived from Chessentia. Making the one day journey alone with directions he acquired from his old contacts in the Society, he arrived in the camp to the sound of battle. Orcs with some beasts were currently rushing towards a fortified camp surrounding the entrance to some ancient ruin. He saw the defenders of the camp handle themselves well but there was no cohesion. He saw a group of men fighting pell-mell in one part. He saw a knight by himself issuing challenges to the enemy for a duel. It was a mess. there was no shieldwall. no cohesion. not even a ditch dug around the camp. He was jolted into action, when a line of men in the right side of the camp was overwhelmed by the enemy rabble. He decapitated an orc with his halberd when it was about to skewer a young soldier frightened out of his wits.

''Stand up and fight, boy! who's in command of this unit?!''

''w-what. w-who?''

''I said who's in command here?!''

''S-sir Korsak ssir! he-hes in the f-frontline in the north c-corner of the camp!''

Sartorius ordered the scared lad to go back from the fighting line and fought his way to join the leader of the camp. After a few minutes of fighting, the defenders managed to beat back the invading force due in part to Sartorius' restoring a semblance of command and augmented by his fighting skill tempered through years of experience. The leader of the expedition thanked him for helping them survive the assault and had let him help the men to be squared up. A few more attacks have been repelled consecutively and more effectively with Scags commanding them.

By the Red Lady they don't even know how to form a proper shield wall He thought to himself. At least now they know how to dig ditches. The only person who could pull his weight competitively in this outfit is the person who kept up pace with him: A man named Krenmuth who is a fellow mercenary, a marine from the Silver Falchions. He knew little of the company other than they are a professional group specializing on ship operations. He is also a cleric of the god Valruth who Scags read about as another exarch or aspect of Tempus. A combat capable healer is very welcome in any fighting group. Sartorius turned to respond to his fellow soldier-of-fortune: ''Yes I do mind Krenmuth...I'm impartial to leading a bunch of undisciplined, unprofessional, wet-behind-the ears rabble. I'm too old for this, but Korsak seems to think otherwise...''

Finally as he and his men crested the top of raise he had a good look at the oncoming group: They were four in number comprising of a couple of human women, a halfling, and another person. If not for their weaponry and equipment, he would have thought them to be a travelling circus. Well at least one of them is with her dancer's outfit. Fingering the horn given to him with his left hand he raised his other hand and hailed the approaching strangers. ''Halt! Who are you and what is your business here in Camp Galfer?''

I sure hope that they're only busy. We have a very good and fun group that I enjoy playing with very much.
If there is any kind of issue don't hesitate to bring it up. Either in the forums or per PN

Korrin sees the group of men up ahead he points them out to his friends.

"Heh, I was just going to ask you the same thing but since you seem to be so curious... We are from the boat that never made it to wherever we were heading. You from there? A Camp Galfer I think it is called?"

Just to note: we've also got the whole cohort of passengers from the boat with us as well, it's quite a crowd. I'm not actually sure how many, but in my head it was like 30-50 people. A few of them are probably still carrying crude spears, and they're all bedraggled as heck.
Annika's fine silks have undergone some impromptu modifications along the journey, not being particularly suited to slogging through marshes or beating a path through the undergrowth. Her hair is a mess, she's tired and filthy, and she's very much reached the limits of her patience. Nevertheless, she manages to regain some semblance of poise, and summon a gracious smile.

"Well met. As Korrin says, we were travelling to Galfer when our boat was sunk and we were waylaid by swamp-dwellers. We've had a long journey - please, lead on to the camp."

OOC:
Thanks for the heads up! I've just skimmed on the Prologue unfortunately and missed the part where you are traveling with a group of people. Sorry for that...
Sardonius looked at the tall woman who addressed him. Her regal bearing and poise suggested that she was noble-born. He has known the type from his childhood and from his long experience as a mercenary. High and mighty types. Likes commanding. piss-poor at leading. Her pretty visage was only marred with her wet clothes; evidence of traveling through the swamp.

He then observed the halfling that spoke beforehand. Scout. quick-witted. might buckle against authority. Before he can respond to the woman he noticed a movement in the corner of his eye. behind the halfling, he saw another person. and then another. he stopped counting when he reached thirty. most of them are humans looking wet and bedraggled. but some of them were holding crude spears and other weapons. Armed. potentially dangerous. more mouths to feed.

As much as I would love to usher you in with your entourage m'lady (exaggerating on the last word) I will have to hold your group here. We can admit only one person that will represent your group to talk with the commander of this camp. we have been attacked just a few days ago by hostile humanoids so we have to implement more stringent procedures in allowing whoever comes inside this camp. So if you would be so kind to elect a representative to come with me so I can lead you to our commander Sir Korsak and clear you all to enter. Unless of course, I am already talking to that representative?

He gave a slight bow toward the woman as he said this. He tightened his grip on the horn and readied his hand on the shaft of his halberd just in case.

Krenmuth holds his arm out to the rest of the patrol squad so they know to hold their positions. Then starts to slowly circle the crowd of visitors, looking for obvious signs of of either trouble or religious leanings. I thought we had it rough. Were they on the supply ship?, he thinks, his face showing obvious signs of sympathy.

Krenmuth scans the visitors. None of them seem to be especially religious or violent. If anything they look tired and dirty. They all seem to have been through a rough few days or even weeks.

The people at the front seem to be the only ones who are well armed. Other than that he can't make out anything remarkable.
Aug 5, 2021 8:44 pm
"Annika would you be so kind and see if you can hurry this along in any way possible? Some of these people are just barely able to continue on. These people are not adventurers, they are sailors and artisans that have survived the sinking of the ship we were on, so hurry up and make up your mind already. These people need food and shelter and rest. They have lost everything."
Aug 6, 2021 12:03 pm
"It might as well be me, I suppose. Fine - let's make haste so we can sort this out and get these people to safety."

Sorry, been a bit low on energy lately. :)
Almost immediately after they came across the armed group, Melianne attempts to scuttle back into the crowd, trying to avoid the hawk-eyed glare of the soldier with blue eyes, unsettled by its intensity. She is not a stranger to stares, not even a stranger to rowdy soldiers looking at her with disregard - but right now, she is tired. She isn't built for travelling long distances without comfort of a cruise boat or at least a decent cart with cheerful people to entertain. The heavy atmosphere of tiredness and despair that settled over the shipwrecked people has been slowly getting to her on the way, and no amount of music or dancing can fight the reality of their situation... Not to mention that swamps don't have great acoustics or firm grounds to support these activities.

So Firebird is too exhausted - both physically and mentally, - to deal with the soldiers with her usual politeness. The mention of picking a representative only made her scoff, and the dancer simply retreated to conceal herself behind Shedinn... which unfortunately put her directly in view of the other soldier's investigative gaze. The dancer returned it gloomly, pouted and demonstratively flicked her hair in an act of petty defiance before turning away.

Once Korrin and Annika decide on their coutrse of action - not that Melianne minds them taking charge, she certainly doesn't have qualifications for that, - the dancer resolves herself to wait it out and scans the area for things she can sit on and rest her feet.

Much obliged my lady. Now if you will follow me-- before he could finish his sentence, Sartorius noticed the dancer in the group trying to make herself scarce among the people. Flirty. questionable role in a combat situation. So these are adventurers eh? I am not surprised. But then I want to become like them so...

He noticed most of the men and some women with him ogling at the dancer like steak in a vegetable buffet. The Red Knight's blade on my neck... STAND UP STRAIGHT SOLDIER! he shouted at the squad YOU'RE ON DUTY! After finally seeing them all squared up, the grizzled veteran shook his head and walked to Krenmuth. Watch over these people while I escort the lady here to Korsak and also, he added with a smirk, If you don't mind, you can take the lead with this group.

Now if you will follow me this way my lady so we can get this over with. My name is Sartorius Tenebra from Chessentia by the way...

Krenmuth responds to Scags, "My pleasure," and walks over to the remaining soldiers. He gathers them into a close line and says quietly, "This crowd needs our help, but we must still be on our guard. I will talk to them and see what we can do. Spread out about ten feet apart. Do not let any of them get closer to the camp."

Krenmuth watches the soldiers follow his orders, then moves closer to the crowd and addresses the halfling. "Excuse me, my name is Krenmuth. I am a priest of Valkur as well as a soldier. We didn't bring supplies with us but I can help directly. Is anyone in your group hurt or severely ill?"

"Annika, of... formerly of House Helminster. I'm sure that under better circumstances, it would be a pleasure to make your acquaintance. So the camp has been under attack? We had rather hoped that it would be a refuge from the perils of the swamp, but perhaps we have merely stumbled out of the frying pan and into the fire."
Aug 7, 2021 10:39 pm
Annika follows Scags into the camp. In fact it's more of a miniature town. She can spot stalls where tools, food and other goods are offered. Most buildings are tents in various sizes but she can also spot some wagons and wooden houses.
Scags leads Annika to a two story building. They go upstairs, Scags knocks on a door and a voice tells them to come in.

Behind a desk that is full of papers and various small artifacts sits Korsak. He looks up from a letter he is writing.
Ah Mr. Scags. I presume this woman is a representative from the group that is approaching the camp.
Korsak holds his right hand to his chest and makes a small bow
My name is Korsak Sigurdsen. I'm a representative of the town of Bridgeton and the leader of this expedition. What can you tell me about your group and what do you do around here?
Meanwhile the rest of the group waits for Annika and Scags to return. The people are all clearly tired and hungry and are growing impatient.
After a lot of murmuring in the group a man finally steps forward and loudly proclaims
This is bullshit! We are clearly no threat to your camp and yet we are being held here as if we were brigands. I say we just march into the camp
He produces some coins from his pocket and shows them in his open hand We are not asking for handouts. We are able to pay for our food and lodging but we just can't wait here and starve to death.
He waves at the people behind him and screams Let's go!
Suddenly the whole group begins to move forward...
Aug 8, 2021 2:04 am
Korrin looks at Krenmuth and shrugs, before joining the crowd and moving towards the camp.

"I tried telling you, its been a rough week. None of us have the patience for this shit, these people came here to work and make a living and now they have nothing but the clothes on their backs. I wouldn't try and stop them if I were you good sir, they have had enough for a good while to come."

On that note Korrin falls in with the crowd and walks away.
Aug 8, 2021 3:45 am
"Annika Helminster. There's not much to tell - we were passengers on the Jolly Wanderer, bound for this very camp. Most of the group are mercenaries or labourers, a few scholars. The riverboat was sunk through some form of hostile sorcery, and many of the survivors were captured by frog-people from the swamp. We liberated them, and made the trek overland. We've faced great hardship to be here, so I had hoped for a warmer welcome."
Aug 8, 2021 6:17 pm
Melianne, who meanwhile has found herself a log to perch on and has been busy trying to dust her silks, startles from her brooding when the group begins to move - encroaching on the camp like one wide wave, and spelling obvious future trouble. The dancer is immediately alarmed, and looks around for any of the familiar faces who might call for order: Rada, Korrin, maybe even Phann...

Finding none of them in her immediate vicinity, Melianbe jumps to her feet and hurries after the group - but then notices that one of the officers who greeted them is still here, and skips towards him instead. Absent-mindely she smoothed over her outfit and straightens her hair to look more presentable, before lightly tapping his shoulder.

"Excuse me, sir Krenmuth?" She bats her eyelashes at the soldier. "I know that you are merely following your orders, and we are the ones causing trouble for you. But surely you see that these poor people mean no harm? Please forgive this lapse of judgement on their part, for it is drawn from exhaustion and concern." She glances after the crowd and bites at her lip with worry. Though there is slyness in the way her eyes narrow when she looks back, with a faint but charming smile on her lips. "There is no need to agitate the situation further by trying to stop them and risk a fight! I am sure they will be more willing to listen and stay calm if you at least let them into the camp."

Too many thoughts are competing in Krenmuth's brain. How did this situation go wrong so quickly? How can I help these people? Must think of something fast. Must take care of the squad first.

Krenmuth keeps walking quickly toward the camp, trying to stay ahead of the tired and sore crowd. He yells to the other soldiers, "Shield circle! Now! No offensive moves then take the rear guard!" What's this? Someone's coming close.

He turns and responds to Melianne. "Just Krenmuth, my lady. I am no knight, but a priest of Valkur, Captain of the Waves. My only intention at this moment is to keep my squad and your companions safe. I can see they went through a bad time but I believe the camp is not expecting them yet. The camp is on alert due to recent attacks and I am not sure these people will be greeted with the kindness they deserve. Please excuse me. I must try to fix this."

Krenmuth remembers how his mentor, the prelate Rikshem the Worthy, started each red moon festival with a clang of thunder to get the attendees' attention. Maybe that will work. Krenmuth continues to walk quickly until he gets about 20 feet away from anyone. At that point, he raises his arms, yells "By Valkur, stop!" and casts a Thunderwave spell.

When the noise subsides, he yells again. "I will lead you to the camp safely. Please create a line in an orderly fashion."

"Recent attacks? Oh my, perhaps it will be best if we don't show up as unexpectedly then," Melianne gasps quietly, and then gasps again as the booming force of the man's spell momentarily washes over her. A soldier - paladin, maybe? - who can weave spells, he is quite intriguing... Unfortunately, it seems that the effect of his magic is insufficient for the agitated crowd, and his authority doesn't impress the shipwrecked mob. Well, it impressed her, at least.

Now a bit more alarmed by the possibility of them being taken for a hostile force by the camp inhabitants, Melianne moves again to stand besides Krenmuth and, using the pause his spell created, calls for her own companions: "Friends, please, there is no need to antagonize these good people! They've been having trouble of their own, and us coming in will scare those in the camp - they simply try to watch out for the safety of all of us. Right, Captain?" She wraps her hand around the man's without much regard for personal space, and beams at the group. "We should follow their orders so we all get to rest and recuperate as quick and safe as possible!"

Korrin follows Krenmuth at a safe distance, knowing that you don't crowd an armed man. As he continues to talk to him.

"They mean no harm master Krenmuth, they are just tired and hungry...and need of the semblance of safety. The end of the road is in sight and they see safety ahead, at least they hope it is safety.

As I stated earlier, it has been a rough week for some more than others, most of them lost everything when the ship sank, then we had to rescue them from these strange frog people. Most are holding weapons for the first time in their lives and I am sure they will be interested in learning how to use them at some point in time. Before they stab themselves in the foot, rather then later."

Scags was half-listening to the conversation between Annika and Korsak. The nobles are now playing their favorite game of 'who's more important than thou', He thought bitterly. he would rather be back overseeing those newcomers outside and making sure no one is making trouble. There was a lot of action ever since he arrived in camp and as a young man, he would have enjoyed it. Now, he wasn't sure if he could handle another scrap even if it's against a wet and shabby-looking rabble. He was getting too old for this. By Tempus I was supposed to be adventuring! not whatever this is! He let his mind wander a bit and focus on his surrounding hoping to hear any excuse to get himself out of the office and outside.

Krenmuth, clearly uncomfortable with Melianne clutching his hand, looks back at Korrin. "Your shipmates won't listen to me. Perhaps if you join your friend here," he looks at Melianne, "with her requests for cooperation?"
Aug 10, 2021 10:27 pm
"What would you have of me Master Krenmuth? The destination they have been waiting to see is before them, they are tired and hungry. The slop the frog people provided for us to eat was fit for....well fit for frogs. They have been held captive against their will when they needed to be rescued, which fortunately we did. We rescued them from a people that should have rescued them." Korrin shakes his head, looking at these people as they traipse toward the camp which is now in sight, barely able to keep going. As soon as they eat they will probably pass out and sleep for a week.

"My suggestion if I may? Would be to feed them and then tuck them in, the only trouble you will have is if you try to delay them from what they see as safety. They will cause no harm unless you try to hinder them in any way from the end of their trying journey."
Aug 11, 2021 2:20 am
"I understand their plight. I would feed them now if only I had the supplies. We brought neither food nor drink, and we weren't told of how many were in your group. Unfortunately, the lack of appropriate information is not unusual in the military."

"I will not try to stop your shipmates. I purposely ordered my squad to stay in back, for both their and your friends' safety. In fact, the best course right now," Krenmuth pauses with the sudden realization he is still clutching Melianne's hand, "is for the three of us make sure we are in front to prevent misunderstandings." He releases Melianne's hand and steps up his pace.
Aug 11, 2021 8:00 pm
Melianne bats her eyelashes innocently at Krenmuth, though an amused smile plays on her lips upon his delayed retreat from her not-quite-embrace. But his words quickly chase away the brief moment of entertainment at the soldier's expense, and Melianne sighs, straightening her sash again and following after the two for lack of better alternatives.

She catches up with Korrin, and leans towards him, not pausing her steps: "Please, dear, we should try to convince our fellow travellers to reign in their tempers, and you have more authority. What if the expedition's guards think that we are bandits, or worse? If there are civilians in camp - researchers, intendants, - then it will take one wrong word for them to panic!" She glances back at Krenmuth, lowering her voice. "...And I wonder if these soldiers will get in trouble because of this. It would be inconvenient to have grudges at the camp."

Her piece said - mostly because she felt like saying it, not exactly expecting Korrin to do anything about the situation, - Melianne then drifts back towards Krenmuth, trying to match his pace and walk by his side. "Krenmuth, earlier you mentioned that you are a priest. If I might ask, what brought you to this participate in this expedition?" She tilts her head, looking at the man like a magpie at a shiny trinket. "Is it of some interest to your patron? Oh, and do you think the campers will like a song about Valkur? I believe I have sheets for an old hymn... and a shanty or two."

Korsak puts the fingertips of his hands together and attenativly listens to Annika's explanation.

The Jolly Wanderer you say? We were wondering why she hasn't arrived already... And hostile sorcery you say...? Tell me mor...
Korsak's words are cut off by Scags who hisses as he hears some kind of commotion brewing in the camp. He hears excited voices and the clinging of metal, just as if weapons are picked up.
Korsak tilts his head and looks at the soldier
Mr. Scags? What seems to be the problem?
The crowd is completely unimpressed by Krenmuth's display of magic and simple flows by the priest and his soldiers. Even though the soldiers are all battle hardened they are still reluctant to stab at civilians and therefore stand by.
The man who complained in the beginning spurs the crowd on and it takes up a quicker pace to get to the camp
I think I can smell bread and, and bacon I think. Quick let's get us some real food he yells

All the others march with the crowd and they completely ignore any kind of guidance...

That certainly sounds like there's a riot going outside, Scags was about to excuse himself between the talking nobles to go check on things outside when he heard it: A thunderclap. in the middle of a fine clear day. Not wasting any moment to trace the origin of the unusual sound, Sartorius rushed out of the office into the scene before him. The group of people that were previously waiting far on the top of the rise is now surging forward with intent to enter the camp proper. Years of training kicked in as he unslung his halberd from his back and ran toward the palisades before the group reached it.

Damn it Krenmuth. You have one job. planting the butt of his weapon firmly on the ground and assuming a wide stance that says ''you shall not pass'', The veteran warrior began to give orders to the other able men in the camp. ''MEN! TO ME! FORM RANKS TRIPLE FILE!'' The men and women of the camp then moved to obey the order, forming a somewhat orderly formation after a few moments. some of them are barely dressed and armored. But the effect is still the same: they would provide a much-needed deterrent to the oncoming rush of people. The guards doesn't need to look their parade best.

Sardonious noticed Krenmuth to the side with two of the adventurers with him. The halfling was looking nonchalantly at the activity. the dancer was clinging furtively to his fellow mercenary's arm painting a picture of a thin willow hanging on to a weathered boulder. These 'adventurers' bought this trouble with them and The Red Lady curse him if he won't make them stop this breach of security. ''KRENMUTH! YOU CAN TELL THOSE ADVENTURERS WITH YOU THAT THEY HAVE A MINUTE TO MAKE THIS RABBLE STOP WHERE THEY ARE AND WAIT WHERE THEY ARE TOLD TO WAIT! OR BLOOD WILL SPILL AND IT WILL BE ON THEIR HANDS AS WELL AS MINE!''

As to make his point he raised his halberd from the ground and pointed the edge towards the oncoming people. Then he turned to the soldiers behind his back and shouted, ''IF YOU SEE ANYONE WHO STEPS OUT OF LINE SHOVE THEM BACK OUT! IF THEY FIGHT, CUT THEM BUT DON'T KILL THEM! HOLD!''

Korrin takes in the scene before him, the battered and bedraggled shipwreck survivors are ambling towards the walls of the encampment. And what does he see but the same man that led Annika into the camp to speak on their behalf forming his troops into defensive battle positions before the entrance and ordering them to beat these people back. "Master Krenmuth I suggest you use that spell, and tell yer friend that if he harms one of these people that I will make a two-legged porcupine of him. I have 16 arrows left in my quiver. And I am not a tired and hungry shoemaker, this has been a walk in the park for me...it has not been for these people, am I making myself clear?"
Aug 13, 2021 3:07 am
"Yes, you are. As I hope that I am clear when I say it is your people who are moving in -- as yet uninvited -- toward an armed camp. A camp trained to stop incursions and which had to do so recently. Shooting at a soldier doing his duty will not help your cause. In fact, it may doom it."

"I have no spells that can stop the rash actions of soldiers or travelers. I want no one to come to harm, but I can only do what I can do. And what I can do is be your messenger. Please," Krenmuth says as he turns his head to both Korrin and Melianne, "do what you can to keep this group peaceful." While he was talking, Krenmuth pulled out his flag from his pack and wrapped it around his war hammer. He hopes Scags recognizes what many on the river used as a sign of parley and starts running ahead of the travelers.

"Scags!" he yells. "They need food! Bring out food and drink!"

Annika follows Korsak outside to find the conflict escalating. Korsak looks at her as though it's somehow Annika's fault, but she just shrugs.

"I'm not their leader, just a spokesperson. They're not some attacking army, they're ordinary people - hungry and tired, and sick of being pushed around. It's up to you whether you let your attack dogs keep on pushing and making the situation worse, or show them some hospitality and win back some trust. If there are hostile forces out there, it would be stupid to put your guards in harm's way to keep out people who would otherwise be helping to defend the camp tomorrow."

''And on who's order?!'' Sartorius shouted back at Krenmuth who seems to be holding a flag of truce. ''Thirty seconds! and stop that halfling in pointing that pea shooter at me or I'll break that piece of wood and shove it up his smug mouth like a toothpick! MEN! SHIELD WALL! UP!''

I am not paid enough to riot control a bunch of peasants
he thought to himself, but he knows that letting this many people in without authorization would mean more trouble. And they don't have any business coming in here after the camp was repeatedly attacked who knows it this is another ruse and these so-called ''helpless'' people are a bunch of bandits with weapons hidden among their clothes? No, unless Korsak gives the go-ahead, he has a job to protect this camp. Even from a seemingly weak-looking rabble.

Getting behind the shield wall he shouted a command to Krenmuth, ''Get them to back off Kren! twenty seconds and after that you're coming in with us to push these people back!''

Melianne observes the rapidly escalating situation quietly, not sure what to do and slightly unnerved. If it was some tavern brawl, then she would've intervened with an impromptu dance or a joyous song to soothe the blazing tempers - but pacifying an angry mob and a band of trained soldiers is above her skills, and she is not about to go and risk her health by catching an arrow from either side.

But on the other hand it would a shame to blatantly ignore Krenmuth's request for cooperation. Except what can she do, sing them a parable about a fox and an impatient bull? That sure will go over well with everyone... The dancer looks around for inspiration, her half-formed ideas ranging from starting a fire to trying to sneak in and confront their leader. But nothing seems effective and safe at the same time, and frustrated, she decides to improvise.

Seeing as the initial inciter of the problem is conveniently in front of the crowd, it takes but a second for Melianne to march towards him and shove a hand into his chest accusingly, forcing him to stop in his steps. "You! You are an utter fool! Are you trying to get everyone here killed because of a misunderstanding?! Because you couldn't wait one damn minute until they could report to their leader?" She glares past the man at the crowd. "Does no one here have a foresight to see what will be the result of you marching into a camp full of armed soldiers, who don't know who you are?"

She crosses her arms and twirls on her heels to stare across whatever distance remains between the soldiers and the passengers, and yells back at Sardonius: "And you are no better! Is it a custom among your military kind to judge immediately and throw insults the moment things go wrong?! On what orders are you acting?" The last sentence comes out way more challenging than she intended, but her own yelling had an unfortunate side-effect of making Melianne herself angry.

"You both are being unreasonable, and if either of you moves closer, I... I will set this grass on fire!" She raises her hands, and magic starts sparkling around her, forming into four blazing, flame-like orbs of light. "Let the camp's leader come out themselves and decide this!"
OOC:
I don't think this is what Krenmuth meant for keeping them calm, Melianne.
(Hey look, I took that advice about Intimidation! A bit out of character, maybe, but I don't think there is much she can do with intimidation without threatening arson... Also, this was Dancing Lights cast.)

"Would these people be shown this kind of welcome had the boat landed at the dock? Would an armed watch be waiting for them if they tried to set foot on dry ground?" Korrin doesn't disagree with what Krenmuth has to say, but this is a bit extreme. The same man who lead Annika into the camp is now prepared to attack.

Yes, I understand I will talk to them. We should be able to provide food and shelter to them. Maybe we will... Korsak answers to Annika but he stops talking as Scags runs out of the house

Korsak hurries out of his house as well, along with Annika and Sardonius. Indeed many inhabitants of the camp grab their weapons but the commotion seems to come from two different sources. People are hurrying towards the western side of the camp as well as towards the group of freshly arrived people.

Nevertheless Melianne's display of courage seems to stop the leader of the survivors of the shipwreck. He stops in his tracks as he doesn't seem to expect the joyful bard to be that determined and steady.
The leader wants to answer but Melianne immediatly turns to Sardonius and scolds him as well and the leader flaps his mouth open and closed like a fish out of water.

The crowd stops as well and Korsak arrives at the scene. Just as he wants to say something a woman with dark skin and a hammer in her hand approaches him and yells
Beasts and soldiers attack the camp, Mr. Korsak! while pointing towards the west.

Korsak grabs his staff, turns to Melianne and says Okay, thank you for stopping the ones here. I'll talk to them. Mr. Scags and all others who are able to fight, hurry in this direction. I guess the days of peace between the mountain folks and us are over while pointing at the direction where the woman pointed at.
OOC:
If you decide to hurry towards the attack you have an equivalent of one turn to prepare. Also roll intiative!

Torn between trying to control a small and immediate threat (the band of people) and a more familiar and dangerous one (beasts and enemies) Scags decided to tackle the familiar one first and sorting this mess out later. With a last baleful look at the ringleader of the rioting people and also towards the adventurers with them, he gave them a warning, ''This isn't over yet! after we've done with this attack, Korsak still has the final say on what to do with you lot! Krenmuth and everyone else to arms! over the western palisade now! And by the Red Knight if those ditches haven't been finished then you will wish those beasts have finished you first!''

Some things never change except for the pay. I'm not getting paid enough for this crap he thought grimly as he strode toward the oncoming new threat with bloody murder in his eyes. The veteran whirled his huge halberd over his head and rested it over his shoulder while sprinting towards the west.

He turns to Melianne and Korrin and says, "Take care and protect yourselves," then rushes to defend the camp, war hammer and shield ready. Krenmuth silently prays to Valkur on the way. With the situation rapidly changing in a less expected way, it takes a minute for Melianne to gather her wits. Yet still fueled by her earlier fury, once she sees Sardonius's retreating back - this pompous, self-righteous, infuriating man! - she takes no delays in following after the soldier, ignoring whatever might be happening behind her, flaming lights still darting around like angry wasps.

The dancer only pauses when she hears Korrin addressing her, but only so she can turn and glare at the halfling accusingly before catching up with him: "Oh no, you don't get to tell me to stay behind! You were a part of this mess too, so you deal with it if you're suddenly so concerned!" With a quick whooshing sound, Melianne's rapier flashes in lights of the camp. "Rada, Solra and Raskell can handle themselves and the other passengers, and I have some fresh annoyances to burn!"
OOC:

Annika, Korrin, Krenmuth, Melianne and Sardonius all hurry to the scene of the attack while the rest stay back and calm the crowd.
Many people run away from the scene and you hear that some of them are yelling 'GNOLLS! RUN!'
As you all arrive you see four beasts looking like humanoid hyenas and a human who is apparently commanding them. Four workers are fleeing from them.
The human is wearing a withered cloak that seems to be made out of vines and twigs. The beasts are armed with bows and spears.
Currently they are firing arrows at workers fleeing the scene.
Just as you arrive they fire a volley...

Three of them hit their intended traget. While two workers (marked red) drop down as they are hit by arrows, the third one marked (orange) is just cut on the shoulder. He screams in pain but continues to run towards you just as the one who was missed by the volley...
OOC:
So the gnolls attacked. It's Annika's turn now

As for movement:
This is a grid so you can only move in 5ft intervals.
If you want to move diagonally the first square counts as 5 ft. of movement, the second one as 10 ft., the third then 5 ft. again.... and so on

Annika's eldritch blast hits the gnoll in the chest and leaves a flesh wound. The gnoll howls in response.

Melianne narrows her eyes, staring at the gnolls and humans in the distance with disdain. Usually, she is a pacifist. However, shooting the running, unarmed enemy is the lowest of the low actions, and these folks are likely the bandits Krenmuth mentioned.

Seeing the soldier charge forward to protect the workers, Melianne grabs her horn with her free hand and sends a triumphant, fury-filled song after him - a melody which spreads over the field like a call to arms before a fight for the ages, its sounds rising and dipping in a pattern that makes it almost joyful.

Before she even lowers the horn, the dancer follows after Krenmuth - or almost after him, keeping slightly closer to the stone face of a boulder nearby just in case. From her new position among flowers and grass, she then summons her magic and sends it to alight the auras of their opponents, swalling the gnolls and their human leader in poisonous greenish light.
OOC:
Bonus: Bardic Inspiration -> Krenmuth (don't you go dying!)
Move: H5 (diagonally)
Action: Faerie Fire - target B13 (I believe I can reach B11 diagonally, then a bit down). Its effect area is 20 ft. cube, so it should cover all gnolls and the human. If I miscalculated somewhere, then direct it so it covers as many targets as possible!

Taking a deep breath, Sardonius ran toward the field behind Krenmuth and the corpse of the human killed by the gnolls. He would prefer to be wedged between the outcropping of rock that will provide cover to his left flank but the dancer had already occupied that position. What she lacked in modest clothes she made up for tactical planning it seems. Or I might be imagining it. With no other cover though he and Krenmuth are sitting ducks with the arrows of those beastmen, hopefully, the other mercenary's shield will be enough to cover them both.

Get that shield up Kren! I hope those 'adventurers' know how and when to shoot back at them while we draw their fire!

Melianne's spell washes over the group of enemies and two of them begin to emit a faint green light (Marked green on the map)

Scags and Krenmuth's valiant effort buys the two remaining workers enough time to run away. Unfortunatly the two melee fighters are now the focus of the gnolls attackers.

In the meantime Korsak along with another group of soldiers arrives, just in time to intercept a group of gnolls that were on their way to you. This means that you won't be bothered by them but you also don't get any backup with your current enemies.

Three of the gnolls drop their longbows and swarm out to attack the two melee fighters in a pincer movement.
The fourth gnoll fires an arrow at Scags.

Krenmuth blocks both attacks with the help of his shield while Scags can dodge the arrow but the gnoll attacking him bites his arm.

Krenmuth's attack hits the gnoll and it lets out a small yelp as the hammer hits its target. The gnoll is wounded although still capable of fighting.

Korrin's arrow meanwhile misses the human by about two feet and digs itself into the ground.

While Sardonius' attack had hit hard at the gnoll Melianne's words seem to have hit the human.
The human yells at Melianne You play with powers you can't comprehend! I'll teach you a lesson little girl!

Meanwhile the gnoll at Sardonius' and Krenmuth's side attack their adversaries and the gnoll with the longbow changes its target and fires at Krenmuth

Scags and Krenmuth can dodge most attacks but one of the gnolls manages to lodges its teeth into the cleric's arms and doesn't let go for a while.
Eventually Krenmuth can pull his arm free but not without sustaining a nasty gash.

While you battle the gnolls you can hear some screams from the side where Korsak is fighting. While his soldiers hold the front he incinerates a gnoll with a ray of fire.

The surviving workers meanwhile manage to escape the scene and run towards the camp. But you can also hear some battle cries from behind you.
Did the gnolls manage to enter the camp? It seems unlikely as you are all standing your ground against them. A quick glance over your shoulder reveals nothing.... yet.

I'm not sure how badly hurt the gnoll is, so from here there are two possibilities:

- If the gnoll is still standing after the rapier attack, Annika will use her bonus action to shoot him with her hand crossbow. I'll roll the attack for this, but just ignore it if the other outcome is available instead.

I realise that I might have created a confusing situation here: I'm still using the current/total format for Annika's HP, but since she has 8 temporary hit points above her normal maximum I've listed that as 23/15. Would it be clearer if we used a different notation for temporary HP, like HP: 15/15 (+8) or similar?

Krenmuth's lightning severly hurts the gnoll. It yelps and jolts back from the cleric a bit.
Annika's attack meanwhile is enough to kill the other gnoll. She shifts her hex to the next gnoll.

The human picks up a few pebbles from the ground, yells an incantation in a language you don't understand and flips it at Krenmuth with his fingers.
The pebble takes up speed mid-air, accelerated by magic. Krenmuth hit at the shoulder by the pebble. Even though it's just a small stone it hurts quite a bit

Krenmuth and Scags meanwhile work splendidly together and kill off another gnoll while Melianne heals her friends and mocks the human.

The gnolls retaliate. The one next to Krenmuth once again tries to bite him while the one with the bow shoots at Scags

The noise behind the group grows louder. Korrin turns around and from his elevated position sees how Rada, Raskell and the others seem to be fighting.... skeletons? From where are they?

Sardonius, was breathing heavily after the encounter with the human and his gnolls.

Yep, I think I'm getting too old for this.

Somewhere at the back of his mind, a part of him is chiding him for showing weakness. He silently chastises and reminded himself that he was the one who came up with this notion of ''adventuring'' when he was comfortable in his retirement back in Chessenta.

By the Red Lady...give me strength...

As he turned around to congratulate Krenmuth and the other adventurers with him who had accosted themselves passably, he saw a new threat emerging over the rise which they came from. Undead soldiers wearing brass armor and weapons are now bearing upon them.

Where did these come from? Is the camp overrun? Is this all a decoy?

Questions to be answered at another time. right now, more killing...well, they're already dead but that's beside the point...

Sardonius shook his head of useless thoughts, heaved his halberd, and ran to a position where he could intercept as much of the skeletal force facing them and then going as quickly as possible back to camp.

One threat gone and new having just arrived, Melianne sighs as she turns to watch the walking beings of bone stumble toward them, spears on the ready. She can't find in herself to be fazed, adrenaline from the battle singing loudly in her blood, and simply focuses on the power of her voice while pulling back towards her companions.

It is not even insults anymore - with skeletons having no organs to listen with and no brains to speak of to comprehend, words won't make a difference anyway, - but more of a loud screech of an angry bird, infused with the same not-quite-magic that drives her music.

To your right you can see that Korsak and his fellows beat back the gnolls as well. While they run back towards the camp Korask calls over to you: Destroy these skeletons, we'll protect the camp meanwhile

Annika's eldritch blast completely destroys another skeleton, showering the battle field in bone fragments.

While Melianne does her best to do damage to the skeletons and Korrin heals Scags the skeletons raise their spears again in order to attack.
But just in this moment Krenmuth dashes forward with his holy symbol.
The skeletons drop their jaws, turn around and run away.

Just as you think about pursuing them you can see that your friends that stayed at the camp fought back their share of enemies.
The two skeletons run into their midst and are quickly shattered by the combined attacks of Raskell, Rada and Solra.

Combat is over! Great work everyone!

No more skeletons, gnolls or any other enemies are to be seen. Korsak strides over to you, droplets of sweat shimmering on his forehead.
This was... most unfortunate. We already fought off some attacks of those natives but never something on this scale. And these skeletons... they came from... hmmm
Korsak scratches his chin and looks at the camp then back at you.
I will perform some investigations. Please meet me at my office at sunset
With these words he starts to go back to the camp but then he stops in his tracks
And before I forget: You have proven your good intentions. You and your people are welcome to stay here and roam freely. We will erect some more tents and I will request additional supplies. Please accept my heartfelt gratitude.
Korsak makes a small bow and returns to the camp

If you decide to search the fallen enemies you find the following things:
The human carries a pouch with various local herbs and plants as well an jade amulet (worth 5gp) that features a triskelion.

One of the gnolls has a belt pouch containing 25 gp.

The skeletons wear scraps of chain armor and have spears that although pointy don't seem to be special

I'd like to plunder the herb pouch, just because Melianne would be interested in it. Unless anyone has other use for it?
Once the combat is over, Melianne wanders over to the boulders she took cover by earlier, leaning over their moss-covered stone to catch her breath and straighten her silks. For all that she performed no physical activity of the sort her companions do, the magic is exhausting in its own way, and the events before certainly don't help now that they flow back into her memory, the fog of battle-induced adrenaline clearing.

The woman sighs, then inspects her horn to see that it is still in peak condition, moving it back to rest in its place in her satchel. She then surveys the battlefield, briefly closing her eyes when they land upon the bodies, and pushes herself upwards with a resigned determination. Almost deliberately, the dancer circles the field to avoid approaching the fallen foes and allies, only closing in when she gets near the human mage.

She squats down, inspecting the man's attire for a second, before plucking the herb pouch off his belt. "Maybe you are the one who shouldn't have played with these powers," she murmurs to the body before standing up and glancing towards Krenmuth. "You sure lead dangerous lives out here, captain. Thank you for your assistance earlier... and right now, of course." The dancer looks back at the fallen workers. "Hopefully these lives were not lost in vain. Rest in peace."

Her word said, Melianne looks around some more and, after finding nothing of interest, walks back over to say her goodbyes for now. "Well, seeing as we are welcome in the camp now, I'm in dire need of some rest. And a bath, though I doubt the latter is in my immediate future. I shall find you later around, Annika, Korrin."

Krenmuth thinks for a few seconds before responding to Korinn. "Hmm. I've never done business with him, but they tell me Pumnoff is the best fletcher here. You'll find his tent on the south side of camp."
Oct 12, 2021 10:39 pm
As you wander through the camp you catch glimpes of the life here. Most people live in tents here. The tents have various sizes and shapes and although most of seem to be rather primitive the camp provides most needs that a humanoid being could have.
There are various hot tubs next to the river, a market where you can buy goods, field kitchens where you can get a meal free of charge and a variety of artisans.
There are very few solid structures, one of which is the building which houses Korsak's office.
It seems as if the excavations until now only uncovered some small buildings. Most of them seem to be living quarters of some kind.

As Korrin scans the market he notices the meager range of products that's being offered. As he asks one of the traders, a female dwarf peddling tools, he learns that most of them placed orders that should've arrived onboard the Jolly Wanderer. The next ship will take a while to arrive so until then the traders can only offer a limited range of wares.

He heads to Pumnoff's stand as suggested by Krenmuth. The halfling beams Korrin, apparently cheered up by the fellow halfing and presents his wares

Annika will spend her time poking around the dig site and talking to any scholars who have theories about the ruins. She still has no idea why she's here, but she's a passable student of history.

Sardonius elected to stay behind and catch his breath after the fight. As much as he was loath to admit it, this battle almost took his life. This was not honorable combat where lines upon lines of men fought side by side against the enemy, commanders bellowing out orders and the day won through superior tactical prowess and strategy as much as martial strength. This fight was messy, chaotic. There was magic involved. True, battlemages were employed on many armies but the magic involved was fire, ice, and lightning and its variations. Here, necromancy was involved. Or it seemed to be judging by the skeletal soldiers that attacked them so suddenly.

This was an adventurer's fight.

Do they always face things like these every day?

At that moment, something shook the core of Captain Sartorius Tenebra of Chessenta. It was fear, not of death, but of the realization that there was a life much more than the ordered cadence that he lived. That his life as a mercenary was meaningless and the exact reason why he left as a lad in the first place. ''The worthless preening dalliance'' was also prevalent in the Society of Swords. He was just blind to it through the decades of drill and order ingrained into him.

He shook his head. This was no time to dwell on unimportant ''epiphanies''. He has a job to do. Sartorius noticed a movement in the corner of his eyes and whirled toward it.

SOLDIER!! Take some people with you and take anything that will identify these people to their next of kin and give it to me. After that gather the dead bodies around and line them up properly on the ground.

Then call Krenmuth and every priest, cleric, or holy person we have on the camp...let's give these poor bastards their last rites and bless their bodies so they won't be used to rise up against us...

As for the bodies of the Gnolls, those skeletons, and that sorcerer, he pointed to the now stiffening corpse of the human who summoned the undead soldiers.

Burn them.

The soldier shifted his foot from one side to the next. He was also slouching.

A-all the clerics sir? E-every--

EVERY ONE!

With that, the soldier stumbled almost head over heels to do as he was commanded.

Sartorius finally sagged his shoulders while leaning on his halberd. He was feeling all of his fifty and eight years.

@Scrol, I assume there is already graveyard near the camp.
Krenmuth was exhausted and still in pain. He heads back toward camp but can still hear Scags shouting orders. I hope they pick a burn site away from camp. Then he sees a soldier running in his direction. Krenmuth raises his hand to slow him down.

"Master Krenmuth" says the breathless young man. "Captain Tenebra orders ALL clerics to gather for a last rites ceremony."

"Yes, the captain knows what to do," Krenmuth replies. "I am heading to my tent for my ritual candles." He was not well acquainted with everyone in camp. "What is your name, soldier?"

"Verrit of Boarsbridge, Master."

"Verrit, together we'll rustle up my neighbor Master Tivalun. He is probably tending to any wounded in the camp. Remember, graves must be dug before the ceremonies can begin. We have a lot of work to do."

Krenmuth steeled himself for a long afternoon, but is eager to hear if Korsak's investigation results in any new information. He would prefer to take the fight to their enemies.

Korrin and Pumnoff hit it off well, both Halfling's dropping names to see who they may both know, or may be related to. Krenmuth was right about the quality of the arrow as Pumnoff hard for sale and made a purchase of one quiver full of arrows... better to have to many than not enough it seems with the shortage of supplies since the Jolly Wanderer was lost.

After making his purchase he inquires about getting a bath and place to lay his head after he grabs a hot meal from the kitchen tent.

Melianne investigates the herb pouch while she wanders through the camp. It contains herbs that have been bundled into small bunches.
OOC:
Melianne can make a Nature check in order to find out more about the herbs
Annika meanwhile finds a tent where a group of scholars stand around a table that has some artifacts placed on top of it. When she asks about the ruins they gladly share their knowledge with her.
Until now only some minor buildings have been uncovered. All they found were household items and clay shards that have been inscribed with strange writings.
One of the scholars, an old woman called Astrid, presents Annika one of the shards.
The writing is quite remarkably as it isn't comparable to any script we know. Fascinating... she tells Annika.
Other than that no mayor discoveries have been made until now. Annika doesn't find anything that would justify her presence here.

Scags oversees the burning of the the attacker's bodies.
The soldiers put 12 gnolls, 3 humans and 11 skeletons onto a pyre. The other two humans are wearing the same jade amulet with the triskelion, that you've found one the one you defeated.
Scags lights the pyre and soon a thick column of smoke rises into the sky. An umistakably warning to not attack the camp again...

Krenmuth leads a ceremony for the fallen workes. A small graveyard is located near the camp. Four graves are already there. Three more are to be added.
Krenmuth places his ritual candles around the bodies while some workers dig the graves. A cleric called Brandt, along with some acolytes accompanies him.
When the workers are finished the two clerics recite prayers. Brandt prays to Lathander, Krenmuth to Valkur.
When Krenmuth finishes his prayer a lightning lights up a cloud on the horizon.
Seems like Valkur has heard your prayer...
In the evening you all meet in front of Korsak's house. He already awaited you and guides you into his office.
Thank you for coming here. I have.... he is interrupted by Rada, Raskell, Solra and Phann who come into the office.

Ah yes! I think you all know each other Korsak continues
I've investigated the attack and I think the skeleton attack and the attack by the natives here were not causally connected but just happened at the same time. You see... When the natives attacked the digging team was just about to open the door of a large building that I assume to be a temple of some kind.
The skeletons came out of the temple as soon as the doors were opened.

Korsak harrumphs and sits down, placing his elbows on the table and putting the tips of his fingers together.
This changes our mission somewhat. Initally we should just see if we find anything of value here. Not necessarily monetary value but also knowledge. Who lived here? Why are there no stories about this place? These ruins are like a blank spot in all tales I know of.

But now we have not only those natives but also undead at the doorsteps of the Four Cities. We need to know wether this place here poses a threat to Bridgeton and the other cities.
We will form two teams.
Rada, Solra, Phann and Raskell along with some soldiers will lead an exploration campaign. They will try to establish contact with the natives. Maybe we can still settle this peacefully. If this is not possible they will issue a warning to not attack us again. If this is not possible either...

Korsak forms his right hand to a fist and places it into his left hand.
... I will request additional soldiers from the city council and we will drive them away.

Another group consisting of you...
Korsak looks at Annika, Korrin, Krenmuth, Melianne and Scags ...will help our archeologists to explore the temple. We have to know what is down there. If an undead army is lurking below us we have to know. Also I can't send archeologists into the temple without protection.
If any of you don't want to go down there I can understand that of course. I just think that you already fought those skeletons so you are the ones who are most prepared here. Do you...

Suddenly a massive thunder erupts and lightnings flare up on the sky. A thunderstorm has started along with rain and howling winds
Scrol sent a note to kadeton
Scrol sent a note to rpgventurer
Korsak turns to the window
Oh, I hope that the storm will subside soon. After all we are still mainly living in tents.
Erm where were I.... A yes! Do you have any questions?
Oct 16, 2021 4:35 am
Annika looks mildly annoyed at being assigned a duty as if she were one of Korsak's soldiers. As the wind howls, however, her expression softens to a smile, with a mixture of resolve and relief.

"Very well. I accept. Should we leave now, or wait until the storm passes?"
Oct 16, 2021 10:04 pm
"I think a day or two of rest and something other than trail rations are in order. And a chance to become familiar with the camp and the other inhabitants, what say you Korsak? We have only just arrived after a long journey and a long delay."
Oct 17, 2021 4:28 am
"The archer speaks as true as his arrows. They," Krenmuth says, gesturing to Annika, Korrin, and Melianne, "deserve a rest and the best meals we can give them. They fought hard for our camp."

"We can use the time to talk to the archeologists and have them make a map of the area for us, too."
Oct 17, 2021 6:16 am
As long as these newcomers can pull their own weight around here...To tell the truth, I still don't trust these so-called ''survivors'' with them, Scags gestured toward the ragtag group of people that came with the adventurers.

One minute they look to gut us with their sticks and now you are lax with them being here...but I will defer to your decisions of course Lord Korsak.

Melianne lounges in her chair, listening to the conversation sleepily and with barely any attention. Quite predictably, after her departure from the battlefield the dancer was immediately distracted by the presence of hot tubs and had spent a good few hours washing away dirt and dust and swamp mud, as well as nursing whatever small injuries still persisted after the journey. The remaining time before the meeting was promptly dedicated to taking care of her belongings, playing a thrilling game of poker with a random archaeologist she caught by her newly assigned tent and inspecting the herbs - both around the camp and from the battle trophy pouch.

Now, however, she is delightfully exhausted and only wishes to go and rest on some proper... well, maybe not bed, but at least a bedroll. In truth Melianne isn't even sure why she is here - by connection to Annika and Korrin? She's not even qualified to enter a ruin, much less explore it... The dancer hides her yawn into her sleeve and nods a vague affirmation when Korsak glances in their direction. At the very least it'll be amusing to play her music in an ancient temple...

A sound of thunder startles Melianne out of her drowsiness, in time for her to catch Sardonius's comment and frown at him. "Please, like you weren't - yawn - doing the same thing. Threatening them with pointy things..." she pulls her silks closer around herself and blinks to focus her vision on the man. "Maybe you should be proving to us that you can be trusted, mister..." She pauses in thought. "Scags, was it? Captain Krenmuth called you Scags earlier, I think... Interesting name."

Krenmuth stands to draw attention to himself. He says to Melianne, "Captain Tenebra is a brave, experienced warrior. Safety of the camp is his first concern and he doesn't trust surprises, such as the sudden appearance of your group. It is unfortunate that you have arrived at a time of heightened danger to the camp. We are all on edge," he says, glancing at Scags, "but are normally genial hosts. The destruction of the Jolly Wanderer and its supplies is yet another concern."

"Speaking of which, at another time I would like to hear what happened to your ship. I was a sailor before I became a priest."
Oct 18, 2021 6:49 am
Sardonius gave a sidewise icy glare to the dancer after her comment.

If I remember correctly we met you cordially outside the camp. and asked you and your group to stay put while we talk to the commander of this camp to let you in with proper protocols. His features then softened a little bit remembering the fight they had gone through, I am thankful for your group's assistance against the recent attack. I guess you are all capable in a fight regardless of how you look. However, I don't like how you let these people brandishing makeshift weapons to just go through the camp without authorization. I don't know how it works where you're from but singing and dancing your problems away or letting certain ''emotions'' get in the way of order doesn't work here...

Besides, all we have for assurance is your words that you were the survivors of the supply ship supposed to be here a while ago. You could be spies sent to scout out the defenses and state of the camp. I also find it quite convenient that at the same time you arrived here, we were attacked.

Sartorius left the almost-question hanging in the air the sense of tension almost palpable inside Lord Korsak's office.

"Damned right it was 'convenient'. If we hadn't made it in time and rushed to your aid, there would have been nothing left here but your charred bodies - if those didn't wander off on their own. Let's all us civilised folk agree to trust each other and keep the monsters at bay, yes?"
Oct 18, 2021 2:22 pm
And I thanked you for the assistance...however 'trust' is a currency we have in short supply here and we don't dole it out to every person that comes along. Especially from those who can't follow basic instructions like 'stay put'.

Oct 18, 2021 6:50 pm
Melianne doesn't seem very impressed by Captain Tenebra's reply, not very discreetly rolling her eyes before speaking up: "You caught us, Captain Gumshoe! We're actually the secret society of very talented spies, allied with that gnoll gang we viciously dispatched earlier. Or maybe it was all a ploy to get into your good graces? My, perhaps we were actually sent here by the skeletons, to prevent you entering the temple!" She huffs, but then all the sarcasm in her tone dissipates and the dancer sighs. "I understand your suspicions earlier, and my fellow passengers weren't in the right back there either. But now, don't you have some sort of a record about people who should've arrived on Jolly Wanderer to check?"

She then glances over at Krenmuth. "We don't know what exactly happened to the ship. As far as I remember, it just... dropped down suddenly? Like into a pit? And then, water rushed around the deck, and we all had been swept by it." Melianne waves her hand agitatedly, trying to indicate the general chaos of the scene she's describing. "I'm not a sailor, but I think it was something unnatural. Some people thought that it was caused by the frog people we encountered later, though the consensus ended up being that it was some other man..."

The dancer pauses, then looks at Korrin and Annika. "Um, I don't think we ever investigated the tracks of this man with an animal, right? What was it... a wolverine? A wolf? I completely forgot about this with the whole Emporer nonsense later..."

Scrol sent a note to FlyingSucculent
Korsak gets up from his desk and raises his hands

Let's not lose ourselves in petty squabbles.
Captain Tenebra. I really appreciate that you care about the security of the camp. I conducted my own research too. I talked to some of the survivors and as far as I can tell all of them where onboard the Jolly Wanderer and many of them were from Bridgeton. Their stories add up and they have knowledge of the local customs and locations.
Additionally some debris was swept up at the dock. Debris of a ship that would fit a vessel like the Jolly Wanderer
So as far as I can tell I think we can trust our guests

He turns to the others
As for your other question: Of course I don't expect you to go into the temple immediatly. You can enjoy a meal, rest and I'd suggest to start tomorrow morning
Lastly he turns to Melianne as she tells how the Jolly Wanderer sank. He crosses his arms and furrows his eyebrows.
This... is troublesome. If someone has the power to sink our ships... We should be extra careful. I will send a letter to the city council of Bridgeton.
His eyebrows unfurrow and he sits down again.
Well.... if you don't have any more questions I'd suggest that you enjoy a well deserved rest
Oct 19, 2021 7:47 am
Again I defer to your judgment m'lord. if you see fit for me or any of our men to work with these-- ''newcomers''. Then I will comply , Sardonius said after giving a stiff bow.

I still have to make some rounds to see if any of our defenses were broken in that last fight and see if it can be fixed. If that attack is anything to go by, more will be forthcoming especially when those ruins have already opened up. Some of us don't have the luxury of resting just when we want...

Without looking at the adventurers he gave another bow to Korsak turned sharply on his heels and strode out of the office.

Melianne watches Tenebra go with a small frown, before leaning towards Krenmuth and whispering to him: "Is your colleague always this friendly with new acquaintances, or is it just because of earlier attacks? This amount of paranoia doesn't seem very healthy. Or advantageous for our missions..." She taps her finger against her chin in thought. "Think he'll appreciate some tunes later to smooth over our disagreements? Or perhaps a good old game of cards, military folk do love some gambling in my experience..."

She yawns again, and rises to her feet. "Anyway, I have no questions, Sir Korsak, though I'm not sure why you're including me in this team - but I don't mind," the dancer makes a small half-bow towards the room at large. "I shall go and get some sleep, this was an exhausting day."

Krenuth responds quietly to Melianne before she stands. "Captain Tenera is . . . driven. If he has any hobbies or outside interests, I haven't seen them. Although I must say that in his short time here, discipline among the soldiers has improved greatly."

After Melianne leaves, Krenmuth turns to Korsak. "Sir Korsak, would any of the archeologists be willing to accompany us to the temple? I would prefer some guidance if there are runes or symbols on the outside. We would not expect the volunteer to join us inside, of course."

This is a great idea Wavewarden Krenmuth! I will assign some workers and two archeologists to your team. I hope you don't mind but I will ask you to leave now. I still have some thing to manage around here. We will see each other tomorrow! Korsak says and begins to rummage in his desk.

You all leave the house. While you try to orient yourself in the raging thunderstorm a man wearing a hooded cloak and holding a wooden hammer in his hand approaches you and informs you that tents have been prepared for the newcomers.
While these tents wouldn't be impressive under normal circumstances, they seem like the lodgings of a travelling king to those of you who just passed the swamp.

You all can sleep well, especially as the storm subsides during the night.
You wake up, fully rested at the next morning
