Having sized up the situation, and sensing her uncertainty, Meht takes the best cover he can and lets off an arrow at Thelonia the White. He's not a great shot with a bow yet, but if it misses it'll still work as a warning. Perhaps given her hesitation it'll be enough to spook her gang?

The arrow strikes true and thuds into Thelonia's heart. She looks down at it quizzically then up at the caravan, her lips part triumphantly, but then suddenly blood gushes forth from her mouth and she topples over to lie face down in the dirt.

Her band stare, dumbfounded, at their fallen leader for a moment, then with a mighty roar, as one, they loose their arrows and charge the front ranks of guards, swords, axes, and spears at the ready.

Three guards go down from the initial onslaught of arrows and clash of iron, they were only partially ready for the charge, their inexperience showing.

The remaining five form up as the captain emerges from the wagon looking like she has just awoken. Her eyes move around the melee trying to form a plan. But not having one yet.

Calum stands, but does not move to take action for either side, he will follow Leesha's lead. His cronies --unsure of what is happening-- hang back for now, assessing which side the want to fall in on.

Calum does not seem at all surprised that you 'knew his dirty secret', he looks up at you in adoration.

"Yes." He replies immediately. "You are right. I don't know what I was thinking. I was desperate and stupid and it seemed like a good idea at the time."

He stands, ready to follow and support you, all thought of his two co-conspirators forgotten. There is no way for you to know this, but there is a good chance they will fall in with Calum if he obviously turns against the bandits.

The long delay is confusing, but Rook finally hears battle start. Now that the initial clash, and the warriors are engaged, he creeps out from under the tarp and on top of the wagon, glancing over the battlefield. He is particularly annoyed to see Calum still on his feet. Staying hunkered low and, he tries to scan the battlefield looking for archers, or alternatively any vulnerable or unaware targets he can snipe.

- Rook -

From you hiding-place you can see most of the combatants, and could snipe any of the nearer ones engaged in hand-to-hand with your fellow guards. The archers are out of range unless you move out of hiding and allow yourself room to properly swing your sling.

A moment of study (WIS roll) might help you evaluate your best target --depending on what you wish to achieve-- or you can take a pot-shot at one at random to limited effect.
None of you have practices fighting together, but it might occur to you that individual actions might not be as effective as some form of coordination, if that were possible.

Rook always has his eye on the main chance. He keeps low and scans the battle, looking for his best opportunity.

Meht looks around for his companions, aghast at how things have turned out. He can't see Rook anywhere but seeing Leesha heading towards the Captain with Callum in tow, he makes his way cautiously over to them to see if they can come up with a plan together.
Oct 5, 2021 7:27 pm
As Rook peers over the edge of the wagon, he sees a bandit sneaking around the side. It looks like he might be trying to sneak up towards the captain. He's still quite a ways off, to be honest, but he could be headed in that direction... Pulling his blade from his belt, Rook crept up over, then plunged down on the man from above, aiming his blade for something soft.

The bandit lets out a squawk as you drop down on him. Holding his bleeding neck with one hand he lashes out at you with his cudgel in the other.

Hearing this, the captain turns and looks briefly surprised then thankful for you help and warning. Her eyebrow cocks as if to ask "You got this?", her attention needed on the bigger picture.

Rook swallowed and shook his hand, trying to return some feeling to it. The bandit had not seemed quite as big when he was looking down from above.... to the captain, he shouted, "Go! I have this one!" He whirled around with his blade and brought it in again, hoping that was true.

Trusting your judgment the captain turns her attention back to the scene at large and starts to shout orders, trying to organise the caravan guards.

Your blade strikes the bandit and he looks down at his body in panic till he realises that it was not able to penetrate his meager armor. This bought you moment to act, but did not do any harm.
Oct 5, 2021 10:45 pm
Rook glances down at where his dagger pokes uselessly against the man's chest, then glances back up. "Hmm... I suppose we can call it a draw." He dives backwards and tries to roll away under the wagon and get to the other side. He'd rather hoped to have that big blacksmith around for situations exactly like this one.
OOC:
Assuming some sort of Defy Danger will be needed for this, let me know if any other rolls are needed as well. Rook is going to try to either reconnect with the others if he can, or somehow flank around this guy and try to stab him in the back.

You hear the bandit call out "Runcold! Over here!". Before you can exit on the other side of the wagon you see another bandit --alerted to your maneuver-- orient to whack at you if you try to stand up on that side.

You are slightly trapped under the wagon, and their weapons --despite being basically 'sticks'-- have longer reach than yours.

You have bandits on two sides and scared horses on two sides (from your wagon and the one behind) with the lead horses separating/protecting you from the main conflict.
What do you do?

Great... Rook looks around, trying to figure out something that might be useful. "You know gentlemen, I am a lover of life in all things. I believe there is no need for me to injure you further today..." He slides his dagger back into his belt; it won't help him at the moment... "What if I were to show you the way to the paymaster's wagon? The two of you could carry the chest off while all are distracted by the fighting, and I could go my own way, and no more blood needs to be spilled? What say you?"

Hoping he had got their attention, Rook rolled back out from under the wagon, panting a bit more than strictly necessary. As he climbed to his knees, he palmed a handful of dust from the road. He slowly brought his hands up. "See? No blade here..." then took the moment of distraction to throw the dust in the eyes of the men, scrambling to run for his life...
OOC:
Rook is not Leadership material, but he is sneaky and he learned to fight in the streets. Put both a +CHA and a +DEX roll here - DEX is my preferred, but you can choose which is applicable. If this goes poorly, it may be the end of poor Rook...

Noticing how fighting gradually escalates, Leesha throws stern glance at the bandits clashing blades with guards and hurries towards the captain, drawing shield.
"Captain, madam..!-"
Movement on the side catches her attention for a moment as she and the other woman noticed bandit, than apparently one of the guards and member of assailants' forces. Shaking head she turns back to captain and salutes a bit awkwardly, clanking with armor, then nods for Callum to come close. "Ma'am, what shall be the orders? I would go to the vanguard, just give your command, and mister Callum here, I am sure he will be helpful here."

While lightly squinting eyes at the noise of cries, cursing, and fights ongoing, Leesha's eyes draw back to where Rook has his own "duel" ongoing, noticing that the bandit is still there. She is awaiting captain's command, then looks over to Callum and an idea springs in her mind: girl points at the wounded bandit and tells her companion to go there and see so that no one would flank them - there might be more attackers.

You would have expected your shady offer to receive a more favorable response from bandits, but both the men confronting you look horrified at the prospect of such an act.

Runcold takes the sand full in his face, but the first had glanced nervously in the direction they came from and instead gets an ear-full. They both lash out blindly as you run.

That captain looks at you and your lack of weapons and ill-fitting armor and eagerness with a touch of annoyance and concern.

"We can't afford to lose you." She says, maybe bit patronizingly. "Um... See to the wounded. Or something." She gestures away from the front of the fighting but the downed guards were at the front so you can not safely get to them.

Glancing at Calum the captain nods approvingly. "Watch her back." She orders, then dismisses you both from her mind as she issues commands to guards bringing the mad scum a bit more under control.

Simultaneous with the above:

Calum looks conflicted by the two set of orders, but opts to follow yours, Leesha, and moves over to guard tackling Rook. "Fenslow," He says to the man, "we don't have to do this. Stop fighting and we can work something out."

Fenslow glowers at Calum. "I told them you would turn on us as well." He says. "It is in your nature. But you know we can not quit this. Think about the consequences, man!"

Rook continued running as the two thugs chased after him. He felt very out of his element, so far from the city and the familiar back alleys and escape routes. He silently thanked Mother Kagain, who'd berated him into purchasing this armor jack before he joined the caravan. It'd had cost a fortune, 30 silvers in all, but without the padding the bruises he'd accumulated thus far might be broken bones instead.

He tried to make his way towards Meht, the hunter, but wasn't exactly sure which direction to go. First, he needed to lose his pursuers. He darted towards the other wagons, finding a low draft one he could tumble under, then another. The bandits were larger and less nimble, hopefully he could shake them off among the forest of wagons.
