On the Road

There is a queue of people signing up for caravan guard duty, times are tough and none of them appear more prepared for this than you are.

The merchant sits at a table covered with papers, telling each applicant to "Make your mark, there, and there..." and handing over a copper piece as a first payment.

You hear him mutter to the stern looking guard captain standing behind him "Do we really have to tell them about the 'next of kin part'? It makes it sound so scary. Won't it drive them away?"

"If it does, we did not want them anyway." The guard captain replies. "If they are sensible," she does not add that that is probably a big 'if', "they will want to know someone will get paid if they don't make it."

• Why are you signing up?
• Who do you enter for your next of kin.

Growing up as the son of the towns blacksmith has given Leiland a strong body, and allowed him to meet many different travellers in need of good steel. Their tales of lands beyond the fields of the local farmers has given Leiland a thirst for adventure and wanderlust. He seeks to see the world.

As for next of kin, Leiland puts his mother. She will need the money Leiland might earn to train a new apprentice. Running a smithy alone is hard work.

Rook made sure to line up behind the big man; this would be a good man to be friends with in a desperate situation. "I too seek to see the world, my friend... New climes, new foods, new drinks, new women..." Rook gives a broad smile. "What better way to do it, eh?"

He takes the paper and carefully scratches his name down on both lines, and makes sure to read the name of the big man who signed before him. He glances up, and gives a reassuring smile as the recruiter frowns at him. "I have no intention of dying, but if that terrible day should come to pass, you may lay my wages in my grave with me. Let some pauper dig me up later, and think me a lord, who would use a coinpurse as a pillow!" He gave a laugh. Privately, he doubted those that died would have their kin see any coin; merchants were not known for their charitable souls.

Wandering up behind the other man, Rook clapped him on the shoulder. "Leiland, was it? I am known as Rook."
Aug 16, 2021 11:23 pm
The merchant seems surprised at Rook's demand to be buried with his pay. He glances back at the guard captain --as though for approval. She merely shrugs dismissively, so he does not object.
Aug 17, 2021 1:45 am
"Well met Rook." Leiland reaches up grasping Rook's hand, shaking it with vigor. "Exciting isn't it! The wider world awaits us! A large somewhat dopey grin splits Leiland face. "And look! They've given us money already!"
Aug 17, 2021 1:46 am
Meht, never fond of crowds, watches from a distance at first. Unlike the creatures of the forest, humans can be so unpredictable! And their small talk - why do they do that? He can never tell if they really want to know the answer or if they're subtly mocking him for his difference.

But he needs the money, and there must be a limit to how many they'll take, so eventually he overcomes his apprehension and joins the queue to make his marks.

The question about next of kin makes him pause. Since their parents passed, he should really write the name of his brother, but the two of them have never gotten along nor understood one another. The thought that what he earns might go to a man happy to cut down ancient trees to extend his farmlands is frankly pretty disgusting. But who else is there?

Resentfully, Meht writes his brother's name and steps away to see who else will sign up.
Aug 17, 2021 3:31 am
Faced with the old dilemma of what to do with one's hands when around other people, Meht reaches into his coat pocket for his pet stoat Oli. "Hey there Oli, looks like we're going traveling!"

He sees Leiland and Rook chatting like old friends and nods warily at them - they'll probably be spending a lot of time together, right? Oli looks around and sniffs the air.
Aug 17, 2021 4:21 am
Noticing the movement Leiland turns to look. "Well look at that, that man has a ferret. Let's take a closer look, shall we? I hear they make great pets and travel companion." Leiland begins to walk in the direction of Meht, a friendly look directed at both.
Aug 17, 2021 6:44 am
Rook followed after the other; he'd know a woman with a pet rat, and there was the pigeon man, but a pet of this sort was unknown to him. "Good day to you, my friend! We noticed your animal from afar and came to observe. Does it perform tricks?"
Aug 17, 2021 7:05 am
Meht smiles. "Of a sort - he can traverse narrow spaces and kill animals many times his own size, can't you Oli?"

He gives Oli a fond pat. To Rook and Leiland he says, "You seem to be old friends - what brings you to this caravan job?"

Leiland looks a little surprised but appreciative at what Oli can do."A feisty friend then." Sticking out his hand to Meht he says I am Leiland, and this is Rook. We just met, but Rook is a gregarious fellow. I am here to see the world and raise funds for my family. And you friend? What are your aims, and name besides as I did not catch yours. Though you travel with a mighty Oli."
Aug 17, 2021 7:30 pm
"Gregarious... I have been called many things, and that is certainly one of the kinder ones." He gave a wry smile. "We are united in our thirst for exploration of foreign climes, but we are companions of but a moment ago, as Leiland has stated. The trail can be a dangerous place, or so I hear; perhaps Oli will wish to join us in... let us say an alliance of mutual protection?" With a bit of a friendly teasing tone, he adds "We might even have room for you in this brotherhood, oh mysterious one."
Aug 18, 2021 12:23 am
OK, there's a lot going on - stay calm. The first thing to do is probably shake the hand.

Meht shakes Leiland's hand and tries to work out what to do with his face.

They're certainly teasing, but is this the kind of teasing people do when they're being friendly or trying to put you in their place, or some kind of mix of the two?

He looks down at Oli; Oli is looking at Leiland and Rook with interest and seems to like them, and Oli certainly doesn't like everyone. So they are probably just being friendly. And anyway, he can't avoid them if they are going to be guards together, so he should probably be friendly too. How do other people work these things out so quickly? Anyway now would be a good time to smile.

Meht smiles. "Oli and I would be glad to join your alliance. As for my aims: in truth they lack grandeur. There's no place any longer on my family's farm for a man who loves the wild, and lacking a place on the farm I also need to make a living somehow. Oli and I can feed ourselves alright from the forest, but anything else needs money."

He looks around.

"Have our employers said yet when we need to leave? I should check and collect my traps before we go"
Aug 18, 2021 12:36 am
The merchant did mention --to at least one of you-- when the caravan was to leave.
The guards were also invited to spend any nights camping near the wagons if they did not have accommodation of their own.
OOC:
It is up to the party when we leave, and also what time it is now.
Aug 18, 2021 1:08 am
Leiland looks thoughtful stroking his chin. "I remember the one who paid us saying something about noon. There should be time.
"Meht if you mind not, may we see your handy work with traps? A skill of much use in the following weeks."
Aug 18, 2021 3:04 am
Meht considers this. "Trappers usually closely guard the secret of where their traps are, but I suppose this confirms I am indeed leaving this place. If you have no further preparations to make of your own, you may come along."
Aug 18, 2021 6:48 am
Rook cast a longing glance at the tavern. This might be my only chance to wet my throat before we set out. On the other hand, probably better to reinforce this fragile new alliance. Aloud, he added, "It sounds an interesting time, far more so than wandering alone." He followed along behind.
Aug 19, 2021 1:07 am
Meht leads the way past the tavern to the Red Bridge, where a path turns off to follow the river upstream. "Best to pull up the fish nets first; they'll be easier to carry if they've had some time to dry."

He leads the others along the path, which soon takes them from the town into the forest. The path narrows as they go upstream, and once or twice they clamber over rocks and across stepping stones, until they reach the bend with the first net. Pulling it up, Meht finds two decent-sized fish, and dispatches both with his hatchet. He checks a second net a little further up, but it is empty. He hangs both nets over a branch to dry, out of sight of the path. "We'll collect these on the way back."

He looks into the forest, which is still in the morning light. "We'll need to follow animal trails to get the rest," he says, and leads them through the trees to the first of several snares.

Leiland rearranges his gear hoping nothing snags on any wild growths,
"Lead on. Though I must ask is this an endeavor which requires a subtly of movement?
Aug 19, 2021 11:47 pm
Meht grins. "Ordinarily, yes, but since we are collecting traps and whatever they've caught and leaving town by noon, we need not fear scaring anything away. Also, the next snares are close by: all animals must drink, so the paths they take to water are good places for traps."

He points to a rise deeper in the forest with a stand of pines. "Past those pines is a warren, so if we are fortunate we might add a rabbit to our provisions."

And sure enough, after not very many steps into the trees the sound of the river is muted, and they can hear a dramatic rustling. Rounding a bend in the narrow animal track they see a brown rabbit thrashing, dangling from a cord which loops over a low branch from a mature tree and attaches to the top of a young, springy sapling beside it. Oli jumps from Meht's pocket and runs up to study the rabbit with interest.

Meht walks up and breaks the rabbit's neck, then reaches into another pocket for gloves that appear to be made of rabbit fur themselves. He puts them on then begins dismantling the spring snare.

As he works he says, "I'm not sure you'd call this a clever trap, but it works for rabbits as long as they don't pick up your scent." He looks up at Leiland and Rook. "Have you ventured into this forest at all before? Most townfolk leave it to a handful of trappers and foragers."
Aug 23, 2021 3:04 am
"I've seen only the edges. Leiland laughs with embarrassment. I grew up on to many stories of the dangers of naughty little boys who get eaten by big bad wolves."

Leiland studies Meht, the trap, and the surroundings. "I like the gloves" he says after a few minutes.
Aug 24, 2021 6:07 am
"This whole walk is a new experience for me. Just walking away from the river is further into the wilderness than I have been before. I grew up in the alleys, and the river was as far as we went. There was coin to be gathered, if you wanted supper and to avoid a beating. It is an... odd experience so far. I imagined it would be quieter than the city, but it seems that the birds chatter as much as the people do."
Aug 24, 2021 6:13 am
Indeed, the birds are chattering all around. But right near where you are, they are quiet, as though the presence of humans makes them nervous.

Over in the direction of the next trap --though only Meht would know that fact-- it seems quiet as well, as though the birds are nervous about something there as well.
What do you do?
Aug 25, 2021 12:45 am
Meht looks up. His ordinary sense of these woods has been thrown by the presence of companions unused to walking in the wilds, but something definitely isn't right. Apart from the local trappers and foragers, other Druids and other Rangers have been known to come through, though they usually defer to locals when they cross paths - a sensible thing to do when you don't know where the traps are.

He makes eye contact with Rook and Leiland, places a finger to his lips, and draws his dagger, and points in the direction of the trap.

To the others he says, quietly, "The stories about wolves are not without foundation. Something is over there, but so is a nasty trap, so don't charge ahead of me."

Out loud, he calls, "Who goes there?"
Aug 25, 2021 1:18 am
Leiland draws his sword and shield, preparing to defend the group if something or someone charges.

Rook silently unwraps his sling from around his wrist, and slinks behind a rock to hide from whatever might be in the indicated direction.
Aug 25, 2021 5:44 am
If the birds are quiet, the logical thing to do is ask the birds why, thinks Meht.

Adopting the respectful and formal tone his father taught him, he calls, "Thou Robin, thou Finch, thou Honeyeater: what seest thou that quiets thy song?"
Aug 25, 2021 10:12 am
- Meht -
At the respectful address, the nearby birds start chattering happily about seeing your party which scared them earlier.
The birds over here have trouble understanding your enquiry about events over there --they have small heads-- and when you eventually convince them to broaden their horizons they start to chatter about everything withing the range of their birdsong.

Tweezering sense from what they are now all shouting at you is hard.

Meht now has a intimate knowledge of every seed, grub, predator, or mate within miles of their location, but can not get the dizzy birds to focus on what is important to the group. There is definitely something 'over there', and it is neither a grub, seed, nor mate (though some birds seem to imply there may be potential in that direction... for Meht).

The noise of the exited birds drowns out whatever is happening over by the next set of traps.
Aug 26, 2021 10:40 pm
Meht motions to Leiland for them both to join Rook behind the rock.

Once there, he says, "You may have heard me ask the birds why they're so quiet over there. They're more agitated than usual with the three of us here, and it's hard for me to be certain. But I think they regard whatever is over there as a predator, and possibly a human one. But if human, they must have some reason for not answering when I asked who they were."

He looks at the sky. "Noon approaches, and with it the time of our caravan's departure. They won't leave without guards, though they may try to hire more in our place. It would be a pity to lose a trap, but we could simply leave, and be more certain we'll still have the jobs we just secured and the adventures that will accompany them. Alternatively we can confront whatever this is, though if it turns into a fight we risk missing the caravan. What say you both?"

Meht can be fairly confident he can track, find, and catch up to the caravan if they miss it. There will be some explaining to do about being late, but they are unlikely to lose their jobs.
Aug 27, 2021 8:17 pm
Leiland looks at his companions appraisingly "I believe there will be worse ahead of us, it might do us well to see how our skills work in unison."
Looking himself up and down "If we plan to move forward one of you should assess the danger. I will only give our presence away all the more."
Aug 28, 2021 12:39 am
"I have no great love for these woodlands, nor what may lurk in them. There are far more poor bandits than rich ones." Rook whispered. "Still... since you have already spoken to them, I suppose the most sensible thing would be for you to continue speaking to them and engage their attention, while I circle around a different direction to take a glance." He waited for the others' confirmation, then crept off to flank the area and discover what he might.

Rook does not know exactly where the next trap would be in these outdoor environs, and can only guess given the few previous ones he has seen, but this does seem like the place. Of people, however, there is no sign... except maybe something that might be footprints on the forest floor, they might be human, but who knows what else lives out here, far from the city.
If Meht was to move up to the next trap location --possibly flanking with Rook-- he would find... nothing. Like absolutely nothing, no 'poacher', but also no game and especially no trap. Careful study of the ground would reveal a little blood where the trap used to be and human (or human-appearing) tracks leading directly away, opposite from your direction of approach.
Aug 28, 2021 7:47 pm
Well off they go to do their thing. Better help where I can.
Leiland then stands and begins walking in the direction of the trap, slamming his sword and shield together attempting to draw attention his direction.
"Come on out you! I know something's out here, let's see your face!"
Aug 28, 2021 11:31 pm
Well, that's pretty rude, thinks Meht, when he sees the place his trap used to be.

He starts following the tracks, for the moment too annoyed to check what his companions are doing.

Aug 29, 2021 9:14 am
Whoever it was, they did not put any effort into covering their tracks, neither coming nor going along the same path. Following them should not be hard.
It does look like they used the noise as cover to run off, though. So the party will need to make haste if they intend to catch them.
Aug 30, 2021 4:40 am
Rook eventually wanders back to where he hears the woodsman's voice. "I found nothing." He says in a low tone. "Whoever was out here before is gone now, and I do not believe there is profit for us in chasing them. We should head back to the caravan."

Rook jogged behind, hoping that they weren't being lured into a trap of some sort. This entire situation stunk of potential misery and woe and slim profits.
Sep 1, 2021 3:52 pm
With all the talking, investigation and decision making you would expect your quarry to have a better head start, but it does not take long before you spot a figure ahead of you, running hunched over and breathing hard.

It appears to be an old woman, you see fear on her ashen, lined face as she glances over her shoulder at your group. She tries to run faster to get away, but it does not make much difference, if you continue at this rate you will catch up with her in less than a score of seconds.
Sep 2, 2021 12:23 am
Meht is surprised, but still wants to know what happened to his trap, so catches up to her.
OOC:
Is it someone Meht and Oli recognise, or a stranger? They'd be familiar with most people who frequent this part of the woods.

- Meht -
As you come within arms reach of the woman she drops into a defensive crouch and silently cowers before you.
Not only do you not recognise her, you have never seen anyone with such a grey skin color either.
Sep 3, 2021 1:03 am
What to do? thinks Meht. He feels in his jacket for Oli, but—unusually—gets no impression from him of trust or mistrust.

She's an elder though, and she looks unwell. And the morning's check of his other traps have netted he and his companions enough food for the moment.

"Greetings Aunty," says Meht. "I mean you no harm, and if you are hungry you can keep whatever was in my trap. But the trap itself is special to me and I would like it back."
Sep 3, 2021 11:58 am
Still looking terrified --and not at all mollified by your words which she does not even appear to have heard-- the woman silently and fearfully holds out a few rabbits and what appear to be all your remaining traps set in this direction.
She has obviously been making her way down the row, collecting traps and trapped along the way.

OOC:
Would Leiland recognize her from town?
Sep 4, 2021 6:47 pm
None of you have ever seen the woman. Her ragged clothes do not look like anything you have seen before either.
Sep 4, 2021 9:55 pm
Meht's jaw drops when he realises what she's done. Sure trappers and poachers might filch the odd rabbit from a trap, carefully covering their tracks. But this? It's just.. not done in this forest, if one wants to avoid injury or worse.

But as Rook says, they have a caravan to catch up with.

He takes the proffered traps and rabbits, then hands two of the rabbits back to her.

"Perhaps your hunger overpowered your judgement, but I advise you to find another way to fill your belly in future. There are not many trappers in this forest who'd let this pass without injury."

To his companions he says, "Let us recover the nets and make haste."

You know the road the caravan is set to take and should not have any difficulty catching up to it. Gathering up the nets won't make much difference to your lateness, and having some more fish to show for it will help your excuse.

As the group walks back through the forest to rejoin the caravan, Leiland says "That was odd, not at all what I was prepared for. Should we ask around the caravan to see if any one has heard of an elderly woman going missing?"
Sep 7, 2021 6:30 pm
A little while later:

You meet the caravan on the road where you expected it to be. You thought you knew the other guards, but evidently they hired on three new people while you were away, possibly to replace you.

Who do you first run into as you attempt to rejoin the caravan?

- Rook -
You notice that the apparent leader of the new three is someone you know.
Why do they hate you so much? How are you going to handle things?
Sep 8, 2021 7:59 pm
Leiland begins asking around if anyone has heard of any missing people recently from either his town(which has no name) or from the surrounding ones.
Sep 8, 2021 8:16 pm

"Yeah. My uncle done gone missing again. Auntie says them fairies done took him same as last time, an' he will be back in a week or two with all his money gone... same as last time." Says one of the caravan guards.
"My dad says he is off gambling and whoring... again." Another opines. There is not a lot of gambling in Safe Haven (name of town, as of now:), so this is news to you all.

No on in the caravan knows about your old woman, or of anyone fitting her description.
Sep 9, 2021 4:30 am
Rook paused as he saw Calum among the caravan guards, and kept his head down. There was no way he could hide for the entire trip, but anything to delay a confrontation. He pulled up alongside his two new friends and spoke quietly to them.

"Keep a sharp eye out for that one, with the red sash? His name is Calum, and he is a killer. He's none too smart, but he tries to make up for it with brutality. We had some dealings, when he killed a girl I... knew. Last I heard, he was sentenced to the mines for stealing from the baron; tis strange that he'd be walking free now, but I'd know him anywhere." Rook was a bit worried, but tried to calm himself. Though there had been bad blood between the two of them for several years, there was no reason to believe that Calum had ever figured out that Rook was the one who had set him up.

When news that you have shown up reaches the merchant, you are summoned to his wagon, the interior of which is fancier than many houses you have seen. It looks like he is ready to shout at you, but the guard captain places her hand on his shoulder and whispers something in his ear.

"Well?" He says, glaring at you and expecting an explanation. "Where have you been?" He demands, then after a second of thought he adds suspiciously. "And why are you questioning my people?"
Sep 9, 2021 5:08 pm
Before entering the merchants wagon, Leiland says to Rook and Meht. "That is dark news friend, but good information to share. We will all keep our eyes on this Calum, no one wants a killer at their back."

After entering the Merchants wagon, Leiland makes a motion to draw the attention to himself. "I had heard news of a friend of my mother disappearing and thought your travelled companions may have heard something on the road. If i had found anything that might help, I'd have sent word from the next town. I did not mean to overstep my bounds as a guard, if I have done so."

"We are here now though, and ready to guard our charges. In fact, to that end I must warn you that I noticed the face of a villain hiding among us. The man with the red sash, known as Calum, though I do not know what name he signed up under. I do know that he that he is a killer and a thief, and he was seized by the guard in the past for stealing from the baron. I shudder to think that he might be in league with other bandits waiting in ambush up ahead."

The merchant seems impressed with your fancy speech, but the captain frowns as though she thinks you may be mocking her.

"Yes. Calum." The merchant nods. "Enterprising lad. He heard we were left short staffed," he glares at you all since that really was your fault. "Offered to find us last minute replacements and, in no time flat, rustled up a few more willing lads. Took me hours to do the same thing, before."

It does not sound like they are taking your warning seriously, and are more inclined to suspect your group of being untrustworthy.
Sep 10, 2021 5:26 am
"Ah, right..." Rook tones down the flowery ass-kissing a bit, so as not to upset the captain too much. "..and, we do regret that, of course. We will be here now. It is indeed fortunate that Calum, a newcomer to caravanning, was able to so quickly gather the armed men willing to follow along, when experienced folk such as yourselves needed more time to do so. It is almost as if..."

He pauses a moment, as if considering a possibility that had just occurred to him, then shakes his head. They will dismiss any suggestion that I make, so better to simply plant the seed and let it grow in their own minds. "I'm sure it is all fine. You no doubt wish to dispatch us to our posts, Captain?"

Meht looks around uncomfortably. He can look after himself in the forest, but now they're out of it he's very glad the others are handling the talking, and that he can feel Oli nestled in his jacket. This merchant reminds him of the man his brother turned into after their parents passed.

No respect for the wild, he thinks as he looks around at the finery and comfort around him. The captain seems capable though.
Sep 10, 2021 7:48 am
"Do we need them?" The merchant asks.
"I would rather have them around where I can keep an eye on them." The captain says with a shrug. Her voice is very soft, yet you can hear every syllable.

Then she motions you three outside, not needing to bother her boss with such mundanities as rosters and duties.
"We have already drawn up a schedule." She says, and if there is resentment in her voice, you can not detect it. "But you can fit into the patrols as we walk," you notice that some --favored-- guards are riding on top of the goods wagons, while you and most of the others are expected to walk beside them, there is no real pattern to the 'patrol', so you can just join in where it seems sparse.

"I have already spoken with the others about night shifts." She says. "We all do it, but some people prefer one over the other. Some are up early anyway and are therefore better suited to last shift before we move off, some people take a long time to fall asleep and have barely done so before second shift starts and then again take forever after and end up with no sleep before they have to wake up again. This makes them miserable the next day, and they are better suited for first shift.

"Since it is nearly mid-summer there are only three two hour shifts --between setting up and taking down camp-- which would you prefer: first, middle, or last?" Her quiet voice adds a menacing tone to this question, but you can not be sure if she means it that way.
OOC:
Coordinate if you want to do it together, and then tell her which shifts you prefer or do no want. Then you can fall into the guards spread around the caravan and engage with (or avoid) any of them at your leisure for what is shaping up to be an uneventful day.

- To whomever was on duty last night. -

During your shift, you noticed Calum sneaking back into camp, but nothing else happened.

You may have been relieved to hear that the caravan was taking an unexpected detour off the main road so as to shake things up and avoid obvious bandits. This is counter to the posted route.

Many of the other guards do not seem surprised by this turn of events. Maybe they already knew --you guys did miss some of the briefing yesterday-- or maybe they are used to it (though most of them don't seem more experienced that you are).
What do you do about Calum's nighttime extra-curricular activities?
What are your thoughts on the detour? Do you speak to anyone --maybe the captain, or some other guards-- about any of this?

Anyone should answer.

Rook watches the man quietly but does not approach him, trying to determine if there is a pattern to his coming and goings. If he is thieving from the caravan, this is of no concern to Rook; he has already warned the guard and the wagon master who they have among them. His only concern is to make sure that Calum is not stealing from any wagon that Rook or his new friends guard, and that blame cannot fall on them later.
Sep 18, 2021 5:08 am
- Rook (and anyone else who is on watch -

Calum was just seen the once: returning to the camp. He then went straight to bed without engaging with anyone.
While it is possible he was just out relieving himself, you don't think so, though you can not say why. It was well into your shift when he returned, and you did not see him leave, so he was probably out for a while.

Leesha could pass for an oddity of a mercenary, likely appearing to most as what she really was: too young, too weak, and clad in oversized scale armor that had a tendency to clink and clank now and then, finishing touch to which was a pink and grey rough hooded cloak, wavering on the wind - all of this likely made girl seem as one of many youngsters wannabe-mercenaries and adventurers.
It was one of the reasons why she had a bit of trouble enlisting at first, though in the end perhaps it was the knowledge unexpected of young commoner to possess, as well as claims of knowing how to tend the wounded and sick that managed to persuade recruiter to sign her up.

Then it was finally the time to hit the road. Leesha checked through her humble possessions and joined the others to go along with the caravan. There was something strange in the air that day, but it seemed to be so on many days recently, leaving the girl wondering if more grim portents shall follow.
That said, later on she mostly sticked to herself, providing what assistance she could and reading her book: during midday they walked, and she would humbly ask if it was possible to take a seat on the wagons for a short while, then later in the evening when caravan stopped, Leesha signed up to keep watch during last shift, — on that time she'd bestow the 'blessing of protection' upon the others who would keep watch, after which return to her more sole stay and perform the rite of dissolution. She is used to staying up, and not having much heavy work to do girl could allow herself some rest.

As the caravan sets out you find yourself, once more, riding atop one of the soft goods wagons. As the expedition's healer you are not expected to do guard duty.

After a few minutes you hear someone climbing up beside you. "Hey there, little lady." Calum says, without introducing himself. "Jojo told me about your..." He waves his hands around, not sure what words to use. "Said it made him feel all warm and safe while on guard duty.

"Sounds a bit gay if you ask me." He adds insensitively. "But I figured I would introduce myself. I am kind of a big deal here, you know, so if anyone gives you a hard time, just let me know and I will sort them out for you.

"You scratch my back, I scratch yours." He says. "Keep each other 'safe', yeah?"

Blonde girl has turned over one of the pages, carefully smoothened the paper when a man she only saw couple of times before takes place by her side. She looks up from the tome and rests hands over the intricate symbols and lines of old language, greeting the nameless guard with a polite smile.
"Good day to you as well.. Oh? I see." Barely noticeable, but she furrows eyebrows at the man's words however Leesha is patient enough.
"I am glad your friend, Jojo, has found the Lord's blessing so comforting. In these trying times, only the divine are there to hear our pleas."
She tilted head a little at the last phrase, while understanding the overall implications of what he means, Leesha replied calmly: "I am not sure I understand, but I I am grateful for the offer of protection - I am able to defend myself, and if you or your friends would find yourself in need of healing or more.. spiritual advice, I'd be there to help in ways I can." Girl brushed strand of hair off her face and, as if remembering something, smiled apologetically, adding: "My name is Leesha, mister, and how would you desire to be adressed?"

"Oh, I'm Calum. People know me." Calum replies both self-importantly and dismissively.

He seems dubious about your 'ability to defend yourself' his eyes roving over you, taking in your lack of weapon and ill-fitting armor. He also does not seem overly interested in anything 'spiritual', but is trying to keep the conversation going (and possibly also desperately seeking something in your words he can construe as innuendo).

"Stick with me and you will be alright." He states. "It is good to have friends, and I am not sure how far someone would get with this caravan." He states, looking out over the string of wagons trundling along the road.

Where are you this morning?

The other guards have a casual comradery with each other, and are constantly chatting and joking. Not only does this feel like a social gathering, it does not feel very vigilant. Most of them would not know what to look out for anyway --out here in the wilderness-- and could really use your guidance if you are willing to try teach.

What is the first hint you get that there might be trouble up ahead?
OOC:
Maybe give us a Roll+WIS for general 'perception'? Or something else if you can justify it.
Sep 19, 2021 8:10 am
Over the discussion Leesha seems to get the feel of what kind of person Calum is, and as such soon grows uninterested in his persona, with exception of this odd feeling regarding his words about caravan.
"This was an interesting conversation, Calum. Sir. Now, if you would excuse me.. Priestess raises her tome and presses against her chest, thinks for a bit, then turns half-way towards Calum. "I shall be here for the time being. Perhaps our employer would be interested in hearing you out as well? It seems.. practical to seek audience with important people."

After that she would return to her reading and occasionally checking the surroundings, listening to nature.
Sep 19, 2021 8:15 am
At the mention of 'your employer' Calum looks a bit nervous, but it is hard to say for what, and he covers it by also looking intently at the surroundings.

Meht has never travelled in this direction before, nor—even so early in their journey—so far from home, so he is keenly interested in the changing landscape and what animals might be in it. The air smells different too.

He's also not so used to tracking animals outside the forest, but even so he notices occasional tracks and scat, and from time to time jumps off the wagon to investigate, before running to catch up. The tracks look like dog, but he sees none, though he does catch sight of larger lizards than his forest holds, and different species of honeyeater. It's all so new! So while on the wagon he studies the horizon for hints of what might come next.

As they pass along there are fewer stands of trees, and what starts to take their place are grey granite stones of all sizes: the smallest might be the size of a horse, but he sees one or two larger than the grandest house he's ever seen.

Up ahead he sees a place the road passes between a whole clump of house-sized stones, and he thinks, idly, Now there'd be a good spot for a trap. Though it's still a little way away, automatically he scans the ground around the spot for tracks or signs of passage.

Up ahead and to the side you hear the bark of a dog, then someone telling the dog to be quiet... then someone telling that someone to be quiet. You have time to call out a warning to your fellow travelers if you so choose, or to take some preemptive action.

Once the caravan's vanguard realise the danger (by your warning or on their own) a halt is called.

There is a moment of muttering from the rocks up ahead, then a tall --like really tall-- woman stands and addresses the party.

"You are now on the lands of Thelonia the White!" (there is no clear reason for her to be called 'the white' there is nothing 'white' about her) (your keen hearing also picks out another small voice muttering "...not actually 'our lands', we had to move this morning" but no one pays it any mind).

"All your goods..." She glances down at something in her hand. "... um... and rights are forfeit. Hand them over and you will allowed to go free!" The obvious oxymoron does not help her situation.

Neither does the fact that the caravan stopped before fully entering the pincer they had set up, and you are not surrounded as they intended. Nevertheless, a caravan can not back up, and you don't know how many bandits there are --you can see, at least, a few with bows.

"Damn it you dozy bint." Calum says when you ignoring him spills into the ambush he was not ready for. "I was trying to offer you an opportunity. I meant it about keeping you safe.

"Now: Come with me if you want to live!" He demands, holding out his hand as he prepares to quickly and quietly jump from the wagon and head off the road.

You have time to act right before the ambush becomes clear.

There's two things Meht would like to do:
1. Send Oli to go for Calum's neck: if Calum's trying hard to get away I think we have much better leverage if he stays put.
2. Take cover, draw a bow and try to get off a shot at the woman who just spoke.

However if anyone else would like to negotiate instead, or try something less foolhardy that this plan would endanger, please say so!

Rook has spent most of this journey trying to keep out of Calum's line of sight while still keeping an eye on him. When the filthy dog grabs the priestess, he sees red. he had no idea who this priestess was, nor much care, but it was just another reminder that Layla was dead while this monster still drew breath. With practiced skill, he unwrapped his sling from his wrist and whipped a good chunk of stone at the back of Calum's unsuspecting head.
OOC:

Sep 23, 2021 5:55 am
Leesha, seeing both the danger appearing ahead and Calum deciding to hide away says "Ohh, I see" with an expression of sudden realization, quickly puts her tome into the bag and with a sigh intently reaches for Calum's wrist.
"I am very sorry, but—"
smack
Girl yelps, loosing her balance a bit even, looking as the stone hits the arrogant fool into the head, her original confidence stepping away: Leesha slides off the wagon, carefully but firmly grasping Calum and biting lower lip as she goes as low as she might. Making a sign unfamiliar to mortal lands with a hand she carefully touches man's cranuim, quoting few passages from the litanies: "By dawn I rise, bringing peace and prosperity, for my will permeates all that is good in this world.."

Fortunately for Leesha, she has been in similar situations where there was but a single step from harming someone to healing them, so she attempts to perform small miracle to cure Calum. Unfortunately, she is not a trained field medic so paying attention to everything around her would be quite problematic - she is focused on her patient.

"That feels amazing!" He says with an infatuated sound to his voice. "Your eyes look amazing!"
Sep 24, 2021 6:58 am
Furrowing eyebrows she manages to give a small smile, then quickly looks around, checking for any danger, immediately turning serious as she listens to what's happening on the road ahead: it seems like they have not began a full-scale attack yet, but caravan guards might need to be more attentive, lest whomever slinged the stone at Calum's head shall likely pick out others.

Leesha returns her attention to Calum and tilts head a bit, bringing a loose strand of hair behind her ear, speaking quietly. "How are you feeling, sir?.. Please, stay down for now."

Without context, your characters have no way of recognising this: but Thelonia seems to be expectantly waiting for something to happen within the caravan, and whatever that 'something' is, it seems to be delayed.

They are looking around confused, as though waiting for instruction. They each have a hand casually inside a cloak, but that are not taking any action against the caravan or your fellow guards, nothing that justifies suspicion.

Girl shakes head a bit, though with more of a relieved expression, before slowly rising on one knee and trying to help Calum stand up, though as she does, Leesha is once more finding herself wondering what should she do next. Does she try to ask him? Possibly, if he is not as driven to flee, she could convince him to step down from the original plan: it seems like the general feel of suspicion Calum had about him appears to have reason behind it.

"Mister Calum.. If I may ask, though I imagine you had your own reasons to work with less savory people, might you be interested in halting whatever you planned? Please, consider it, for I do believe one should strive towards unity."

She brushes hair back once more and extends hand towards Calum in a meanigful gesture.

"Like that. Nobody needs problems."

Having sized up the situation, and sensing her uncertainty, Meht takes the best cover he can and lets off an arrow at Thelonia the White. He's not a great shot with a bow yet, but if it misses it'll still work as a warning. Perhaps given her hesitation it'll be enough to spook her gang?

"What if I were to show you the way to the paymaster's wagon? The two of you could carry the chest off while all are distracted by the fighting, and I could go my own way, and no more blood needs to be spilled? What say you?"

Hoping he had got their attention, Rook rolled back out from under the wagon, panting a bit more than strictly necessary. As he climbed to his knees, he palmed a handful of dust from the road. He slowly brought his hands up. "See? No blade here..." then took the moment of distraction to throw the dust in the eyes of the men, scrambling to run for his life...

Movement on the side catches her attention for a moment as she and the other woman noticed bandit, than apparently one of the guards and member of assailants' forces. Shaking head she turns back to captain and salutes a bit awkwardly, clanking with armor, then nods for Callum to come close. "Ma'am, what shall be the orders? I would go to the vanguard, just give your command, and mister Callum here, I am sure he will be helpful here."

While lightly squinting eyes at the noise of cries, cursing, and fights ongoing, Leesha's eyes draw back to where Rook has his own "duel" ongoing, noticing that the bandit is still there. Glancing at Calum the captain nods approvingly. "Watch her back." She orders, then dismisses you both from her mind as she issues commands to guards bringing the mad scum a bit more under control.

Rook continued running as the two thugs chased after him. He felt very out of his element, so far from the city and the familiar back alleys and escape routes. He silently thanked Mother Kagain, who'd berated him into purchasing this armor jack before he joined the caravan. It'd had cost a fortune, 30 silvers in all, but without the padding the bruises he'd accumulated thus far might be broken bones instead.

He tried to make his way towards Meht, the hunter, but wasn't exactly sure which direction to go. First, he needed to lose his pursuers. Everyone rushed forward when they saw Thelonia fall. You would think they would have paid her body more attention, but this does mean that Oli has a fairly clear and unobserved run out to her position and back.

While the stoat's brain can not comprehend the specifics of what you might find useful you can piece together from his report of 'bubbles of blood forming and bursting at her mouth' that she is still breathing.

The easy thing would be to leave this information alone and take the kill, dealing with the chaos it caused rather than causing even more chaos by trying to do anything with that information and her body all the out beyond the fighting.

What do you do?
Oct 13, 2021 7:26 am
Alive? thinks Meht. That sounds like leverage.

He pats Oli and tells him he is a very good boy, while scanning the scene: is there a visible way to get there alive?

No guaranteed way to get there alive, anyway, Meht concludes. So he does something harder: goes to try to persuade the Captain to listen to the testimony of a stoat.

Walking up, he considers several conversational gambits, but since each would eventually turn on her ability to accept an unlikely truth, he decides to cut to the chase.

"Begging your pardon, Captain," he says, "but my animal companion reports the bandit leader may yet live."

The captain looks at you as though you are crazy. "Don't be daft." She says, dismissing you from her immediate considerations. "Someone shot her in the heart."

The captain did not see the shot --nor who did it-- but is more inclined to believing those reports than what you have to say. Perhaps mentioning the source of your information was a mistake, some people are not as in tune with nature as you are.

"Now, get out there and fight!" She shouts, directing you to the heaviest fighting where you will be at the most risk.
Oct 15, 2021 4:55 pm
Leesha noticed the man approaching, and after listening to a short exchange, momentarily turned her attention to his words — she would be inclined to believe him, despite how bizzare it might sound, after all she wouldn't be the only person dealing with something mystical, however, person didn't strike her as a venerator of nature, whom, she heard, could talk to beasts..

Feeling like this is taking too much time, Leesha shrugged uncomfortably, clanking with plates of her armor and regaining focus. "Whether she is or she isn't alive, captain's right - we should step into the fray so that our allies won't be overwhelmed." Pair of young eyes look Meht over briefly and she steps towards him.
"I shall not disobey captain's orders so I can't accompany you for now, but going into battle unguarded might cause you to die — I pray on my Lord's name, so the everwinds guide your hand and turn unfaithful's blade and arrow alike.." Leesha reaches out towards Meht, holding the other hand with shield pressed against her chest: from under the lowered eyelashes dimly shines the glimmer of pink, before the last words roll off her lips, faint whisper: "...as long as you fight for Him."

Whether the other member of the guard accepts the blessing from beyond, young woman is quickly reminded of her companion, and decides that, perhaps, she could still help behind the vanguard: there was a fight on the side, after all, and adjusting her protective armaments fairheaded follows where Callum went.

By its very definition, it is hard to tell exactly what is going on in a melee, but, from your perch above, you can tell that the fight is all happening at the front --the caravan having been alerted to the ambush before fully entering the narrow section of road it was set for.

If force could be concentrated there you all should be able to drive off the attackers. You can bet the captain will work this out eventually, but she does not have your vantage and might not yet know the rear is unthreatened.

What do you do? Add your arm to the defense? Try to help the captain --who does not have the best first impression of you-- in her planing? Run and hide? Something else? What?
Oct 18, 2021 12:21 am
Rook decides he has taken enough bruises for the day. He hops from wagon to wagon along the train, running to where he saw the captain. "I have scouted the threat, oh captain my captain," he calls to her, trying to cut a dashing figure standing atop the wagon above her. "There is no sign of bandits behind us, their trap seems to have been sprung too soon. You can call your forces forward to focus upon the attack here!"

Rook was rather nonplussed by this apparent offloading of responsibilities. Sending other people off to be beaten by clubs was, he supposed, the sort of skill that one had to develop if they wanted to survive in the caravan business.

He looked down at the faces staring up at him, and racked his brain to remember things he had heard the soldiers shout out back home. "Right then, um... Onward, into the breach! Man the ramparts! Ram the manparts!" ...Wait, that wasn't right.

He was losing them. "er... The sooner we rout these louts, the sooner we can all get pissed! Get 'em!" He charged forward towards the front of the caravan, staying on top of the wagons. No need to get back within swinging range of those cudgels.

There are some confused looks in your direction at your call (and one "that's what I always do" from one of the girls who you are sure used to work at the brothel). Out of the corner of your eye you might just see the captain facepalm.

Meht has never felt anything like Leesha's blessing, which pours through him like a hot wind, driving him to do what he can to turn the battle. And hearing Rook's call to arms, such as it is, he knows he won't be fighting alone. He looks at Leesha in silent wonder, stows his bow on his back, and pulls out hand-axe and shield.

He points out the closest bandit to Oli and says, "Go carefully behind that one. When I am close to him, bite him on the back of the neck and I'll hit him from the front."

To Rook he calls up, "I'm going in!", then wades in to attack the bandit with his axe.

Rook remained up high, throwing out shouts of encouragement to the troops but keeping his energies focused on watching the battlefield. Earlier, two brutes had been threatening to smash his brains in, which was all right; that was the sort of thing he'd dealt with before. However, when he'd tried to bribe the with the paymaster's wagon, they'd seemed aghast at the concept. And they'd said something to Callum about consequences...

Greed and violence, that was the sort of person Rook knew how to deal with or avoid. But men motivated by something other than greed, those sort made him nervous. He kept scanning out over the wagon train, making sure no other surprises were in store.

From your perch above you are fairly sure there is no one else out there. Maybe moving the ambush from the main road added some distance, but maybe you just do not understand the nature of what worried the bandit's.

Your voice has attracted attention, though, and you briefly spot those same two brutes as they zero in on you, but their move is noticed by the caravan guards, who swam them and quickly beat them down so you lose track of them. However, following your cautious lead, the guards are not dedicated themselves to addressing the --diminishing-- enemy forces, and Meht is fighting valiantly, mostly alone. He looks impressive, but that fact is going largely unnoticed.

Meht and Oli have practice hunting as a team, so their timing is pretty good. As Meht approaches the nearest bandit, Oli quickly scurries up the bandit's back and sinks his teeth into the back of their neck. As the shocked bandit throws back their arms to try to grab at whatever it is, Meht steps deftly in and deals the bandit a solid axe-blow to the chest, hoping this will encourage the other guards to shift from intimidated defence to offence, and the other bandits to reconsider their plans.

Rook watches the woodsman drop a bandit with brutal ferocity, along with his furry sidekick. Looks like he's doing more than fine. So instead Rook maintains his watchful position up top, urging on the troops with occasional shouts. The goal, as he saw it, was not to win a battle at the cost of lives, but rather make it too difficult for the attackers to continue their assault. If they could protect their own necks, and the wagons, that'd be more than enough to satisfy him.

... and they do. The guards rush forward, the bandits turn and flee, stragglers are cut down. One guard doing that cutting down stops to throw up afterwards --never having killed a person before-- but that has no impact on the victory.

The cheering that follows causes the merchant to come out of his wagon --against the orders of the guard captain who looks a little annoyed, but does not say anything since it appears safe enough now. He looks around, appearing pleased with the result.

The captain ignores the merchant and starts issuing orders for the wounded to be collected and treated. The green guards are not really sure how to deal with the dead bodies --from either side-- and no one wants to touch them.

In Rook's experience, the best way to deal with corpses was to empty their pockets and then roll them into the river. Unfortunately, there did not seem to be any sort of river handy. "Good work people!" He shouted as he hopped down from the wagon. "Every man and woman here is a hero, and no mistake!" He clapped a few on the back as he worked his way through the crowd, then began checking for valuables on the bandits bodies. The dead can wait until the wounded have been given a chance.

The captain seems to approve of your taking charge and leaves you to it, moving out of sight to deal with 'other things'.

Those selected guards appreciate being called of 'dead duty' and are rather keen to be near you and talk about the fight. Eager enough that they are distracted and not much good at the medical side of things.

"The say you just walled up to him...", "... and the dead, just like that!...".

"Hey, Jonjo! Careful! I am injured, here. Don't stab me again!" Says an injured guard you are trying to help as they are almost impaled on one of your helper's spears. This near miss does not diminish the chatter: "...and then the way you swirled and chopped of her head..."... You don't remember chopping off anyone's head, the rumors of your exploits appear to be growing before your very eye.

There is a chance that at least one of the bandits might survive if given sufficient time and attention, but when you discover that, the guard with you moves quickly to dispatch them and you will have to intervene to prevent this.

By the time you get to her, the 'bandit queen' has passed beyond the vale. Is Oli looking at you with an attitude of 'I told you to hurry'? I can not tell, with him.

"Really? These dumbasses have 'information'?" The guard asks keenly, clearly quite impressed that you would know that. "What kind? It's hidden treasure. Go on, you can tell me, it's hidden treasure, right?"

The guard pokes the unconscious bandit with the blunt end. "You got lucky, pal." He mocks. "You owe your life to... what's your name, but the way?" They ask, not being one of the guards you have gotten to know yet.

"I doubt there's treasure, if they're risking their lives attacking us," says Meht to the guard. "But it would be helpful to know where they came from and whether there are more of them anywhere."

Meht looks over the bandit and their wounds, trying to work out how much time and energy it might require to get them in a state where they can be questioned. He's also looking for any clues as to the bandit's origin and what drove them.

You ambulance service are clearly disappointed that there will be no 'treasure'. "We know there are 'more'." One opines. "But they ran away." That seems to be enough for most of them.

"I'm Jonjo." Says the one you are talking to. "But some people call me JoJo, even though I ask them not to, as it is confusing."

"And I'm Asha. You were really great out there. It was amazing to watch you fight." Says another all in one quick breath. She has not uttered a word so far and immediately ducks down shyly as though she wishes the earth would swallow her up now that she has spoken.
You know that any time spent investigating needs to be balanced against dealing with the injured caravan guards. If they don't get treatment now they will be worse off, but, if you don't investigate fully now the looters will remove the evidence. There are already people eyeing the bandit queen on the assumption that her belongings will be the best, but they are more likely to also be the best evidence.

Convincing the others to spend the hours, or possibly days, to help a bandit get better will be an uphill battle as well.

Meht is quite unused to praise since his parents passed: his brother's family had only carping and criticism for things of the wild like him. So Asha's words throw him off balance a little. Is she mocking? Oli shows no sign of mistrust, so he grits his teeth and tries to take it as offered.

First he reminds the guards who are 'helping' treat the fallen how to apply the medicinal leaves: "Lay the leaf flat in your palm, make a fist with your other hand, then bruise the leaf a little with the back of your first until the juice comes out. Then lay it carefully on the wound: it should stick."

Then to Asha he says, starting to walk in the direction of the bandit queen, "That is kind of you. Would you help me investigate the bandit queen before the lighter-fingered of our friends do?"

It is clear that 'healing' is about more than just squishing juice from herbs and smooshing that on wounds, but your fellow guards do their best, and, at the captain's instruction, they carefully start to move their friends to a covered wagon that is being emptied for this purpose.

No one knows what to do about the injured and unconscious bandit, but Jonjo stands watch, making sure your orders are adhered to. The captain has not yet noticed, or not that you noticed.
Asha gushes over the chance to help you. "Oh, yes. It would be a bit indecent for you to..." She stops, blushing as she realises her hands are miming moving over the 'queen's' body.

"What are we looking for?" She asks, rolling Thelonia over and almost putting her eye out on the fletching of the arrow sticking from her breast.

The tracks the bandits left clearly show them coming down from the direction of the main road, you would guess they are only a few hours old. The fleeing bandits mostly followed the same path, heading back where they came from, though a few ran down the road you are traveling on.

The bandits left nothing but tracks, all heading to a distant line of rolling hills dotted with outcrops of what looks like ochre, and Oli and Meht turn up nothing more interesting than two scraps of cloth snagged on bushes. They sniff them and smell sweat and fear: no surprises there.

Asha calls them back, an awkward shake in her voice, blushing furiously, and she and Meht stare mutely down at the bandit's bare back. Thelonia's back is quite covered with a dramatic tattoo of a beast Meht has never seen before. It seems to have the body of a serpent, dotted with strange symbols; the head of both a crow and some kind of horned goat; and four eagle claws. One claw holds a cup, one a flail, one a flaming branch, and the last a chain with five links.

While he looks at it, lost for words, Asha hands over a tattered map. There's writing on it, which he can't read, but the shapes make more sense, and would seem to show the road the caravan has just traveled, the ambush site, the row of hills, and a dotted line running from the ambush site to a cross in one of the hills. Past the hills are three skulls, whose meaning is less clear but probably doesn't bode well.

Meht hands the map back to Asha: "This looks like a map from those hills to here, but I never learned to read: do you know what this says?"

"Um... a little... well, not much, actually." Asha admits. "Da insisted I learn to read, but it was boring and I... pretended to be paying attention. He did not know the difference.

"Give me a while and I may be able to work this out? But don't tell my teacher that she was right and reading was actually useful, 'K?"

She motions to the tattoo with her foot. "We are not taking this seriously, are we? I had a... er... boyfriend," she blushes again as she mentions this, "who was a sailor. He had all sorts of strange things tattooed on his... er... tatoos. He claimed he had seen them all. But I know he never left the bay, and I have swum as far as his fishing boat goes, and I never saw women with tails or fish with swords."

To Asha he says, "Well, anyone who might know what it might mean. Certainly the captain: she's likely more familiar with this area. But first I want to ask my fellow townsman Rook, if I can find him."
OOC:
Is Rook around, and where might Meht find him if so? Also, what time of day would it be by now?
Dec 4, 2021 12:57 am
Rook heads towards the head merchant's wagon with a bit of confidence in his walk despite his bruises. He wasn't too worried about this meeting; in his experience, if folk were upset with you, they didn't ask you to stop by, they tried to knife you in your sleep. If they wanted to talk, that meant they thought you could do something for them, and in that case it was always best to project a bit of swagger.

As he got ready to mount up the steps, he noticed Meht returning from his bandit hunt. He gave a wave and a nod, and held up on the doorstep as it looked like Meht was heading towards the wagon same as him. "Well, hello, if it isn't Meht the Merciless himself. Assuming you've been pulled in to see the captain as well?"
Dec 5, 2021 12:24 am
Ok, that's definitely mockery, thinks Meht, stung, and wondering how long that episode under the influence of Leesha's blessing is going to follow him around. He can guess how it would have looked from the outside, but still feels slightly sick to be thought of as quite that bloodthirsty.

"I have," he says to Rook, stammering a little, "but first I wanted to know if you've seen anything like this, before I show the Captain? You're more worldly than me."

There's no elegant way to do it, so he rotates so the bandit queen's back faces Rook.
Dec 5, 2021 3:11 am
"Wow..." Rook mutters, glancing over the size of the tattoo. "Ain't no part of worldly I've ever seen. It's big, but other than that, not a clue, sorry." He thinks for a moment. "Hmm... it's way more work than you'd get from a single drunken night, so it's not just art for art's sake. And it's not just one big design, there's all these different parts. So maybe it got added to over time? Maybe the snake is part of some cult initiation and these other marks are ranks she earned along the way? Don't seem to have done her much good, if she was hiding out here in the wilds and attacking caravans though." He scratched his head.

"Whatever the case, I think you might be best off leaving her out here and having them come out to see her. Neither the captain nor the merchant seem the type to appreciate blood on their floors. I can help you situate her, but we probably shouldn't keep them waiting long, wouldn't want the good mood of repulsing the attack to wear off."
Dec 5, 2021 4:49 am
Meht absorbs all this gratefully. "I'm glad I asked you first. I've offended enough people in the past by dropping bloody things on their nice floors, it seems to be a hard thing for a trapper to remember not to do."

Part of the reason I joined this caravan, he thinks. Looking around, he continues aloud, "Where should we, uh, situate her?"

"We can just drop her by the wagon wheel. Long as she's out of the way and nobody's gonna have to step over her, it'll be fine. Ain't like she's going to be complaining about it." he chuckles. He helps Meht move the body out of the way, and seems to notice the priestess following behind him for the first time. He clears his throat with an embarrassed cough. "Is this the ambush point?" Asha asks, turning the map round and round as she studies it. "I am not sure. That does seem strange." She agrees.

"We can ask the captain?" She suggests gesturing to the wagon. "I am sure she would know more about maps and stuff?" There is a clear question on each of those statements, if you don't want to include the captain (specifically, or any others generally) Asha will help keep this secret.

As you both enter, the merchant stands and walks grandly towards you, arms outstretched. "I hear I have you to thank for getting us through that mess." He says, indicating the captain as the source of this information. She looks a little peeved to be stuck in here 'doing honors' while there is work to be done to get the caravan moving, but seems to acknowledge that it needs to be done.

There are a handful of small leather purses on the table --all slightly different sizes-- and the merchant ponders them for a moment before lifting two of the larger ones and handing them over, one to each of you.
"As a token of our thanks." He explains. "Keep up the good work."

That seems to be all he wanted you for. If you have anything you want to tell them, now is the time.

Are you insensitive enough to check the amount in front of the other character?
How do you feel about the amount, and the comparison?

Meht, too shy to count it in front of the others, pockets the purse with a stammered thanks, and tries not to look to see whether Rook does the same.

To the merchant and Captain, he says, handing over the map, "Asha found this map on the bandit queen - can you tell us what the writing says? It look like a map from the hills to this spot, which seems strange if they were ordinary local bandits - this is the obvious spot for an ambush."

As they study it, he adds, awkwardly, since his last attempt to get them to pay attention to unusual information went so poorly, "Uh, we also found an unusual mark on the bandit queen, and I wondered if either of you had seen its like before and knew what it meant? Her body is outside."
OOC:
Do Meht's questions of them need a roll too?

The merchant looks towards the captain as if to ask: "'Asha', which one is that?" the captain merely shrugs.

While the merchant boss shows none at all, the captain shows only slight interest in the map and its writings... up until you mention the 'mark'.

"What sort of mark?" She asks much more quickly than she intended, then she tries to feign disinterest while saying: "Perhaps you should show me."

She was about to hand back the map, but now holds onto it distractedly.
Dec 6, 2021 9:12 pm
Rook takes the purse and slips it up his sleeve with a practiced gesture. "Of course, of course. Happy to assist." He's about to turn and leave when Meht speaks. His ears prick up when Meht mentions a map; this was something new. He watches with interest as it gets handed over. When the captain reacts to the mention of a mark, he knew he had to get involved in this.

"We have her right outside, you can come take a look. My friend and I knew that this might be the sort of thing you'd want to know about. He reached out for the map with one hand as he gestured toward the door with the other, hoping in her distracted state she'd absentmindedly hand it over. "We would have brought it in to you, but as my friend so cleverly pointed out, a corpse would be a poor fit with these fine furnishings."

Interesting, thinks Meht, when he see the captain's reaction to the mention of the mark.

He leads the way through the door when Rook gestures to it, and hisses at Oli, who is curiously sniffing at the bandit queen's corpse, to come back and jump into his coat.
Dec 7, 2021 3:14 am
The merchant seems horrified at the suggestion that someone may have brought a dead body into his wagon --and will be even more so, if he sees it is also 'leaking'.

"Bimi. Do we really have time for this?" He whines as the captain leaves, but his complaint is ignored.
Outside: Asha looks forlorn as Oli darts away from where she was trying to play with him, then stands back as the captain turns over the bandit queen with her boot. The captain's look of distaste intensifies as she sees the tattoo. She does not take any time to study it, but snaps at Asha:

"Fetch Alycine at once!"
- Alycine -

How likely is it that a lowly guard would know who you are? Or, for that matter, where to find you?
Where do they find you? Tell us a little about the style you are traveling in with the caravan.
Do they have to go through Sebastian to get to you? Would they know that?

You easily pluck the map from the captain's distracted hand. You can study it while she is looking at the body, but, when the analyst gets here, she may want to know what think you are doing. Better start coming up with a good lie now... or a good reason.
Dec 7, 2021 5:29 am
A short moment later, Alycine arrives on the scene. While dressed in a rather plain fashion, even a quick glance would reveal her good breeding, and she holds herself with a personal aura of dignity.

"Good tidings, Captain. I assume that if I was called to travel to this location that it is because of a need of my talents. I can only assume it involves the map that the troub..." Alycine quickly changes her words "...gentleman is holding on to."
Dec 7, 2021 6:05 am
Rook had followed the other two out of the wagon, and was looking the map over as they examined the body. He was barely lettered himself, so the words held little meaning for him. He was instead holding it up to the sky with the sun behind it. He'd once heard a tale in a tavern about a letter with secret words that you could only see if the light was shining through it from behind.

He was squinting at the parchment without much luck when he heard the upper class voice speaking. He glanced down and saw woman who had just arrived, and was instantly conscious of his bloodied leather, bruised face, and sweat-stained hair. His lips tightened when he heard her "slip of the tongue" and imagined the sneer she was hiding. Wonderful. Typical merchant princess type...

"The gentleman was just looking for any clues, your grace. A thousand apologies for any offense." He handed the map over to her with an elaborate bow. "I did discover something, but I'm sure you're not interested in my witless ramblings."

"Oh? And what have you discovered, pray tell?" Alycine comments, accepting the map in the meantime.
Dec 7, 2021 7:04 am
Rook thought back for a moment to Calum's odd actions during the trip, his midnight wanderings, the strange number of thugs he had recruited as guards. There'd been the odd comments when the bandits had confronted them, and then there was the two thugs that had chased him, but shown no interest in coin; seemed somewhat outraged by the idea, in fact. Strange indeed...

"Well, to address your comment from earlier, friend Meht; you mentioned how odd it was that bandits would have a map leading to the ambush site. I agree with you; surely bandits would have scouted the area if they intended to lurk here."

"That is why I believe that the ambush was not a destination, but rather a starting point, and the map is to guide from there to an unknown third location, marked by this cross. My guess is that the attack was meant to be cover for the abduction of a specific something - or someone - which was then to be delivered to that site."

He hesitated a bit on the second part; he'd only noticed it a moment ago, and it could potentially involve the captain... but if there was treachery here, it would be better to face it with Meht close at hand.

"The other thing I noticed is that this parchment is a bit thin. It seems to be another document originally, washed and scraped clean to reuse; someone needed paper for this map, I guess. The traces of the old writing are faint and hard to read, but I can recognize my own name there, and there. I believe this is the recruitment and next of kin roster we signed when we were hired... which means that whoever drew this map is one who has access to the secure papers."
Dec 7, 2021 7:15 am
"Now, hang on just a minute!" The merchant splutters at Rook's last point --up until then he had been impatiently tapping his foot in the doorway of his wagon, and not interested in all this except to want to get moving.

"Those papers are stored, safely, back in town. There is no logical reason to bring them out here! Really man!" He shakes his head, obviously reconsidering how much bonus he gave Rook if he can't even see that.

He, however, has not looked at the paper. Anyone doing so will be inclined to think it is true, despite the logical inconsistency.
Dec 8, 2021 10:07 am
"It sounds like the caravan may still be in danger, then," says Meht. He's never been great at working out people and their intrigues, but this much seems likely.

"So perhaps someone could tell us all what the writing on the map says," he continues, then points at the bandit queen's tattooed back. "And has anyone seen the like of the mark on this woman before?"
Dec 8, 2021 10:39 am
Having asked his questions, Meht watches the others to see how they react to the map and the mark.

Probably time I started trying to learn to read people, he thinks. His time in the forest taught him how to read a landscape, and the animal marks on it: surely he can make use of those skills to start understanding people better? Wouldn't hurt to learn to read writing, either.

Hearing Rook's theory, Alycine immediately unfurls the map, racking her mind in an attempt to see if Rook's hunch had any kernels of truth in them, despite the logical inaccuracies. Having the Bandit's tattoo pointed out to her as well, Alycine moves over and multi-tasks her examination of them both - perhaps they are two pieces of the same puzzle? She turns several concepts that could be applicable to the tattoo over and over in her mind - Artistic symbolism? Hidden occultist codes? a stylized landmark? What could the tattoo mean? She ponders...

Decipher skill in order to figure out the tattoo's meaning and its relation to the map - (2d6)

Dec 8, 2021 11:58 am
Alycine recognizes the tattoo as a brand of an ancient foul sorcerer, though their name remains lost to time. She hopes that this is simply a case of an unrelated party simply attempting to use said symbolism as means of deceptive intimidation rather than a direct affiliation, as magic users are not to be trifled with.

Once the recognition was made, Alycine deduced that the position on the map was one of the last known locations of the "Chalice", a famed religious artifact whose guardian temple has long been abandoned. It was rumored that this Chalice could empower magic rituals, and if someone nefarious were to nab it, it would not bode well for anyone. Perhaps they had hoped to search the area and retrieve the Chalice for themselves. Alycine relays this information to the Captain.
Dec 8, 2021 12:19 pm
"There was no magic here." The captains declares, looking out over the mess left by the battle. "But we should probably deal with this..." She turns the map over and over, looking for this 'temple' and grunts in acknowledgement when she finds it.

"What?! We can't be rabbiting off and hunting 'bandits'!" The merchant declares. "We have goods to deliver!"

"Look at this, Nofsus." The captain says, striding up to him and trying to keep her voice calm. "This is your paperwork." She pushes the map into hands, directing his eyes to the recognisable marks when held to the sun.

"And they had set up this ambush, here, on this road. The road we took specifically because it was not the expected and advertised one!" She almost shouts. "How did they know? You tell me that! Think about whether you want these guys behind us as we venture where we are going." She says, more quietly.

Then she turns back to Alycine. "What's a 'chalice'?" She asks, though she may be trying to change the subject.
Dec 8, 2021 1:35 pm
"It's like a cup" Alycine replies matter of factly, before realizing the Captain might be expecting something more insightful. "Legends say that this 'Chalice' was a significant religious artifact, often used in rites and ceremonies. Thus, some say that the Chalice has Wonderous powers itself, though separating the rumours from reality might be difficult."
Dec 8, 2021 1:39 pm
- Alycine -

"Pff." The captain says dismissively. "Anyway, you say this 'temple' is 'abandoned'? So, if they set up there, it was probably because it was convenient, not for this 'magic cup'."
Dec 8, 2021 2:08 pm
"I pray this is the case." Alycine mutters.

Well I think that's about all I got at this point, feel free for the rest to chime in.
Dec 9, 2021 7:13 am
Rook glances over at Alycine with interest. She knew her stuff, whatever else was going on with her. "Yeah, so... this magic cup of yours... Does it look anything like that cup?" he asked. He used the toe of his boot to point towards the tattoo on the bandit's back, specifically the portion showing the cup in a clawed talon. He looked back at the Captain. "Cause it seems like an awful big, what d'ya call 'em... coincidence, ya know?"
Dec 9, 2021 7:26 am
"Sometimes a cup is just a cup, and a ... a chain is just a chain." The captains replies, motioning one of the other items with her own boot. "But crazy people believe all sorts of thing."

She pauses for a moment, gathering her resolve.

"I am going to check this out." She declares over the merchant's muttered protests. "Who's with me?"

It seems unusual for her to be soliciting volunteers, normally she just tells people what to do.
Dec 9, 2021 8:52 am
Meht, watching the captain's face, sees on it the wary look foxes get when they suspect one of his traps. So Meht infers she is worried, cautious. However, she could be worried about what's out there, or worried about getting caught out by the merchant. But if it were the latter, surely she'd leave camp alone or with a trusted ally? Asking for volunteers, among guards she hardly knows, suggests she's genuine.

"I'll come," he says.
Dec 9, 2021 8:59 am
- Meht -
The captain nod her thanks in your direction. "I appreciate that." She says, sounding relieved. "The map is rough, and drawn from the opposite side, so we will need all your skills finding its source."

Asha speaks up as soon as you volunteers. "Me too." She says, but her offer does not garner more than a passing glance from the captain.
Dec 9, 2021 10:27 am
"I could be of use as well..." Rook offers. "...though it sounds like there maybe going on at that spot than we know. Sorcerous marks and magic cups and all that. Surely that justifies some hazard pay for us guards?" he adds, pointing at himself and Meht. He wasn't sure if the Captain would go along with the idea, but she certainly seemed to be more on edge than she was letting on. If she really was worried about something, that was worth leveraging for some extra coin.

"Whether or not the cup exist, it does sound like a good idea to ensure the bandits do not have a position to harry us from. I, too, will come, and I hope you do not begrudge me bringing along a faithful friend."

Alycine claps her hands. "Come, Maha"

Soon, a Falcon arrives, perching itself on her shoulder. She strokes the bird on its head, then turns to Meht.

"I believe you are also trained in a form of animal handling... while our choice of companions differ, to say the least, perhaps we shall find mutual ground."
Dec 9, 2021 10:03 pm
Meht's eyes widen when he sees Maha. From Alycine's voice and how she carries herself he'd assumed she was one of those fine people with no love for the wild, and who don't like blood on their floors. But a falcon! He quickly revises his estimation, though he's unsure exactly what to replace it with.

"I.. ah yes," he says, at a bit of a loss for words until Oli, catching scent of a falcon, goes very still and then pokes a cautious eye out of Meht's coat to see what is going on.

"This is Oli," Meht continues, "I think he's a bit worried your fine bird will want to eat him, though."

"Nice try, good sir." The merchant says amiably enough --he is still impressed with your work during the fight, and understands your motivation to eke every penny from a situation. "But I am already not happy about you all swanning off on some cockamamie quest, there is no way I am paying you for it!"

He looks around at the group of volunteers and sighs. "OK. You can take this lot. But no more!" He says grudgingly to the captain. "I am just glad you had a small audience for your call to arms." He mutters to himself as he walks away shaking his head. "Else the caravan would have been left without any protection."

Watching Oli squirm around in Meht's coat gives Alycine a faint smile.

"There won't be a problem. Maha?" She points at the stoat. "Friend. Got it?"

She takes Maha's silence as acknowledgement of her understanding.
