Adriana nods and remains against the wall while the woman returns to the parlor. She looks to where The Impure looms at the bottom of a set of stairs leading up. 'I am uncomfortable with him as well.' She mentally communicates with her Geist. 'We need be on our best behavior, yes?. The daughter needs us and so does her mother.'

It's understandable to be skeptical. Jay opened after the heavy weight of silence hung in the room after Jeromé gave in to the arguments at hand. We don't ask you, or any of your family, to believe in any of the things we do. We just ask you to indulge us using the rites and techniques we've found to be useful and helpful. To be honest, some of the things we have to do don't make sense to us as to why but they do work. A lot like the law, I guess, lots of things don't make sense but they can be used by people that know how to get the results they want. Right?
That's what you do to help your clients? It's the same for us. We use the supernatural 'laws' we know to help our clients. The laws we work with aren't written down in libraries usually, though, and we kind of have to learn them the hard way... he sighed, not entirely convinced this would be the last time they had a temper tantrum from Jeromé. Dealing with the unseen aspects of reality often didn't sit well with people rooted in the perceived solidity of modern reality. One of the things we'll need from you is the truth.
Answer any questions we have with the absolute truth. No half truths, not leaving anything out for your benefit or others, and especially no lying. Like you expect when cross examining a witness, yeah. We're discreet and we don't judge. Harmful entities latch onto strong emotion and lies so let's not put you or your family in any more danger than already exists, yeah. Jay let some other sink into the lawyer as he searched the man's eyes for acceptance or understanding.
Secondly, were going to possibly be searching through records on the house and property so we might need you to sign off of that if we need to pull official documentation.
We don't keep them if we pull them and the copies will be returned to you. Third, we're going to need access to this house since the negative effects seem to be centered here. We won't mind if you or your wife feel the need to be here with us. We understand that strangers, stranger than most, crawling around your home might be a little unsettling. Having one or both of you here, or your daughter, to answer questions might be helpful and hopefully put your mind at ease. Jay looked to the others, You guys got anything to add? Jeromé was probably going to be more difficult to wrangle than the unseen elements in the home given that the lawyer had already triggered two of their krewe within half an hour of meeting him.

"Have faith in us trying to help your daughter. Also don`t passive passive aggressively imply your daughter is lying when she's scared and has the courage to ask you for help... It's a Dick Dad move." Derek states before lowering his voice after his first sentence.

Max was relieved that Mr. Guillory came to his senses before Derek had to knock the man's teeth out and was happy that Jay was quickly moving the conversation forward. He was going to have to figure out some way to make his colleague more comfortable with charging for the service that they provided. Yes, it was uncomfortable to discuss, but Max had learned a long time ago that very few clients shared in that discomfort. That would wait, though. Right now, it was time to get to work.
The Forgotten had come into the room, Max noticed. Derek's outburst had likely grabbed his attention and now he was standing just inside the door. He didn't seem bothered by the situation, and his calm demeanor caused Max to conclude that he hadn't uncovered anything unusual while looking through the house. Mrs. Guillory, who had followed Adriana out of the room a short time ago, returned a few moments later.
Max smiled when he saw her, assuming that her presence here meant that Adriana was probably ok, too. He stood up and moved to intercept her, leaving Jay and Derek with Mr. Guillory.
"Excuse me, Mrs. Guillory," he said quietly. "Would you mind showing me the rest of the house? I'm particularly interested in seeing where the various paranormal manifestations you described took place."

Jérôme listens to Jay. Initially, he seems uncertain how to feel about taking directions from someone half his age, but he eventually gives Jay a look of approval. "You handle yourself well for someone so young." It's the first nice thing the man has said all evening. "House and property records won't be an issue. In fact, my wife has her copies if you wish to go through them. She did her own research at the Parish Assessor's Office."
At Derek's suggestion, Jérôme narrows his eyes but deigns not to respond. There is a rise in tension for a few seconds, but the tension quickly passes when Claudine enters the room.
At Max's request, Claudine nods. "Of course. Let me show you around." She looks to her daughter. "Samantha, can you help me show our guests where we sometimes hear and see things?" Samantha stands up and moves to her mother's side.
Meanwhile, Jérôme walks to the mahogany desk at the front of the room and pulls back the wheeled leather office chair. He opens a drawer and withdraws a short stack of large folded documentation. He puts the papers down onto the desk and motions to them. "Property records for the house, specifically deeds, easements, tax assessments, previous sales, and census records, as well as blueprints of the house itself and plats of the land plot. We have records all the way back to the Civil War."

Adriana looks to Max and Claudine. "I would like to accompany you on the walk-through, if I may?" Her eyes trail over to Samantha, as the daughter is asked to come along as well to help her mother identify and remember the hot spots of activity throughout the home.

For anyone who wants to come, Claudine and Samantha embark on a walk-through of the home. The parlor leads into a foyer, which connects to a central hallway, The hallway is a major artery that provides access to all the first floor rooms of the house. A stairway in the foyer leads up to the second floor.
The hallway is tastefully decorated with a long rug, entry tables holding vases of flowers, and modest amounts of artwork or photographs on the walls. The Guillorys lead you down the hall, and, one by one, take you into the various rooms. Each time it's the same: Claudine opens the door, turns on the light, and leads you all inside. She then explains what she has experienced, with some additional input from Samantha. The rooms have similar furnishings and spacious layouts. Two are guest rooms. Another is a family room. A fourth is a large bathroom of white tiles and brass faucets. At a cursory glance, everything appears fairly standard. Nothing about the rooms invites any immediate insights into the haunting.
Most of what Claudine tells you is a reiteration of what you've already heard. Claudine goes through a list of her family's experiences in each room. She talks about seeing a shadow person in one area, or hearing someone say her name at another. Sometimes it's sudden cold spots, and other times mother and daughter simply have the feeling of being watched. Objects (such as car keys or a cell phone) occasionally disappear only to be discovered in other parts of the house. Claudine indicates that she thinks the activity is a sign that the ghost doesn't want them here, but Samantha says she thinks it's about getting attention. When asked to elaborate on why she feels this way, she replies that she doesn't think she can. It's intuition.
So far, none of you have seen any ghosts with your own eyes yet. That isn't unusual, since the dead will often hide when they know a Sin-Eater is in the vicinity. It means your krewe may have to track them down or flush them out. Many will also hide themselves from geists, for geists can often prove to be frightening even to their fellow ghosts.
You eventually make your way to the kitchen located at the rear of the house. It's a visually appealing area that you can tell has been professionally designed and recently renovated; like stepping into the picture of a kitchen from a home and garden magazine. It's a spacious room of marble countertops, hand-dyed floor tiles, stainless steel appliances, and light fixtures that resemble old New Orleans streetlamps. An island with matching stools is situated at the center of the room. Two doors open into a separate pantry and laundry room, and a third leads to the house's backyard. It's not difficult to imagine that this kitchen cost a small fortune to complete.
Aside from its expensive decor, something else stands out about the kitchen. Even if none of you initially notice it, your geists react to its presence by glancing up at it. Hanging on the lintel of the kitchen doorway is what appears to be a tiny cloth bag about the size of a watch. It's held to the lintel by a thumbtack. Given the background of your krewe, you all immediately recognize the object as a voodoo talisman - or something that looks very similar to one.

Jay took the tour of the Guillory's home with the others. He was more interested in the experiences in the house than it's luxury appointments. It was a storied house, as every old house in the Big Easy was, full of history and witness to a lot of change. This place was nothing like the homes Jay had lived in for most of his life. No dirt floors or holes in the drywall, no blankets for doors or cots bolted to the floor with cinder block walls. Even so, this house had probably seen it's share of tragedy and sorrows.
He shot a bit of a smirk back at Mr. Guillory after he caught the man turning pale while Jay handled a vase on one of the console tables in the hallway. Odds are, the vase was worth about ten times more than his Grandfather's beater he drove over in... He could feel the lawyer breathe a sigh of relief when he put the object back where it was. If anything ever caused Jeromé Guillory's untimely demise, Jay suspected he'd be anchored to this house and the things in it...
The kitchen was a masterpiece of too much money and nothing good to do with it. Derek, he thought, would definitely argue with him on that front but this kind of work was Derek's bread and butter. Or was until... Jay shifted from the thought of Derek's misfortune; partly because it stirred his own feeling and partly because he needed to be concentrating on the Guillory's problems. After seeing Jeromé's reaction to him handling the vase, Jay wondered how the uptight lawyer would react if the Krewe had to take a pickaxe to the kitchen walls or floors to solve their haunting problem... He'd be lying if the idea didn't give him a mischievous grin.
The sight of the bag above the door gave him pause though, Where'd that come from? he asked Mrs. Guillory.

"Adriana! Yes, of course," Max replies graciously. His expression suggests that he is glad to see that she is ok. "I was hoping that you would."
He extends his hand to allow Adriana to walk ahead of him with Mrs. Guillory and Samantha. The Forgotten falls in next to him and they follow behind the ladies as their hostess shows them the house.
As they enter the kitchen, the Forgotten ducks down to rush ahead into the room as if he is trying to keep as much distance as possible between himself and the talisman that hangs over the doorway.

All of you succeeded on the roll, and RageRed got five successes so that's exceptional. You all recognize that little cloth bag as a Voodoo talisman, or what is more properly called a "gris-gris" (pronounced gree-gree). Also known as a mojo bag, ritual bag, conjure bag, and satchet. This is a sort of medicine bag used in Voodoo to place a "wanga," or spell, on something. Contained within the bag are ingredients related to the kind of wanga you are trying to invoke. A gris-gris can be hung somewhere, worn like a necklace, or carried in one's left pocket.
Voodoo shops all over New Orleans sell these things for tourists. The House of Voodoo sells them by the dozens. The tourist versions are little more than mass produced trinkets made of synthetic fibers and filled with aromatic herbs. Nothing mystical about them. The one hanging over the kitchen doorway, however, seems authentic. You can tell just by looking at it.
Genuine gris-gris are not sleek or mass produced. Rather, they are individually handmade by a true Voodoo adherent. They are constructed from homemade materials and ingredients that are personal to the creator - usually things found around the house. This bag seems to be made of a rough fabric, perhaps burlap. The top is tied off with a piece of string. It's hard to know the purpose of the bag without opening it and studying its contents.
Adriana gets some additional information.

At Jay's question, Samantha turns and looks up at the bag hanging from the lintel. She smiles slightly with recognition. "Oh that! That was put there by Marie, our former housekeeper. She said it was for luck or protection, I think. Placed several of them around the house. She believed that there was something... dangerous living here with us. It turns out she was right."
Claudine looks at her husband and back to the krewe. "Jérôme hates them, but I insisted they stay up. I figured that they couldn't hurt."
You know the name. Marie Broussard is a member of one of the local Voodoo congregations with which your krewe has affiliation. She was the contact that informed you about the situation with the Guillory family and referred them to you.

When Mrs. Guillory explained that Marie had placed gris-gris in various spots around the house, Max looked at Adriana quizzically. The two of them had met several years earlier at Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo. Adriana worked there at the time and Max was sure that she knew far more than him about such talismans.
OOC:
If Adriana and/or Jay want to look inside it, Max will take it down and open it on one of the kitchen counters where the light is good. He would be less likely to know what the contents represented than either of them would, but he could help them to identify what is inside the bag. Mrs. Guillory, you said that Marie Broussard used to work for you.... Jay was clearly fishing for the reason why she no longer works for the Guillory family. Adrianna said the gris-gris was used for warding and he had every reason to believe her assessment; she was a long-time practitioner of Voudoun. Her partner was the lead in the local voodoo group the krewe associated with. If she said it was for warding, that was about as definitive an answer asit got. The thing was...wards kept things in as much as they kept things out. Do you think these were keeping something in the house rather than keeping it out? he discreetly asked Adriana.

With Claudine's permission, you take down the gris-gris and untie the top of it, revealing its contents. As with most such charms, the bag contains an eclectic mixture of ingredients. In this case, there are dried herbs, small stones, several chicken bones, a vial of black powder, and a folded piece of paper with a verver (Voodoo design) drawn on it.
The herbs, which you recognize as mandrake and mistletoe, are for protection from evil spirits. The black onyx stones, as well as the chicken bones, are for protection of the household. And the vial, which you believe holds black salt, also offers protection. The verver is the symbol of Damballah; to call his attention to the home and watch over it.
Everything indicates a protective gris-gris, specifically from "negative energies." Nothing suspicious. Still, this talisman would've likely done little to help the family. The creator probably lacked the expertise to give it mystical "oomph." It was the right idea, just nowhere near strong enough to repel real ghosts. Also wouldn't have been strong enough to keep them trapped, either.
