It began ten days ago. The first few people, traders at the Nohme dock, reported feeling a strange stiffness to their limbs. They thought, at first, that it was simply the cold sinking into their joints, but, day after day, it became progressively worse - a rigidity of joints and biting, bone-deep cold slowing their movements to the point of near motionlessness.

That’s when they knew something was wrong - but, by then, it had already begun to spread.

Several panicked inquiries to nearby towns revealed that these were all symptoms of a disease - a highly-contagious magic from the ancient and inhospitable islands of Eiselcross. It’s there, too, that the only cure has been developed, synthesized by Cobalt Station, the research center stationed the furthest into the core of Eiselcross’ main island. Unfortunately, all attempts to contact the station have failed.

Five days ago, a delivery team was sent out to the station to retrieve the medicine in person. Soon after, all contact with them was lost.

Two days ago, the port was shut down, travel in and out of Nohme to the other parts of the Greying Wildlands restricted until a cure could be found.

Today, a few of those first-infected crystallized, their bodies turned to perfect, icy statues.

Now, as The Symphony of Ice and Fire sails along the northern pier of Nohme, those onboard can see the affects this malady has had on the once-prosperous town. The streets are barren, clogged with un-shoveled snow. Those few residents that moved between buildings trudging slowly, as if trying to walk beneath water - or, in the more extreme cases, thick molasses.

Most distressingly are the ice statues - just a few of them now, but likely to grow in number in the coming days - their expressions frozen permanently in abject misery.

Along the docks, an elderly dwarven man with a light grey beard and spectacles waits along with a small retinue of Glassblades. For those who have visited Nohme before, he is clearly recognizable as the town's Burgomaster, Sten Onmunson. He raises his voice to be heard upon the anchored ship.

Sten Onmunson
"It astounds and humbles me that you should agree to take this burden upon you, sirs." The old dwarf says, and it's clear that even his limbs move with a stilted stiffness that goes beyond his age. "I fear you are this town's last chance - and perhaps the last for this entire region. At the rate this is spreading, and with our supplies quickly dwindling, I don’t expect our town can survive more than a month, and we won’t have the supplies, or the manpower, to send another team should you fail. Your journey today represents our final hope. Can we count on you?"

He looks up at the magnificent ship, trying to catch the eyes of Mance Pyro, Teorethefethyrio, and Bonepipe - the adventurers who had taken it upon themselves to answer Nohme's desperate call.
OOC:
Please introduce your characters! Feel free to go back and give some background on how your characters got started on this mission.
OOC:
Mance, please describe the Symphony of Ice and Fire here too! While there are unfortunately no crowds, townsfolk will likely start to peek their heads out of their windows at the sound.

Teo, do you have an idea of how they got on board? I think since the trade routes got shut down, they might have had some trouble figuring out how to get back to Nohme, and that's when they boarded the Symphony, which was going the same way?

Bonepipe, I wonder if you can incorporate something about your homeland/why you left/what you left behind in your introduction (as part of the Outsider race-background)?

[ +- ] Introduction (Mance returns to Nohme)
Members of the crew rush around the deck preparing for departure. Pipe cleaners were being pushed through each of the organs, the furnaces were being stoked, torches were being lit at key places on deck to be used to play instruments and set off fireworks, the ice chimes were being shaved and polished so they would produce just the right frequency when struck, and oars were being lowered into the water to maneuver them out of the harbour, their accompanying drums contributing to the percussion section of The Symphony. The piece of music Mance had selected as a hopeful farewell would require everyone's best, but if executed well it would surely lift the towns spirits until they return ... if they return ...

Hearing the Burgomaster, Mance walks to the edge of the quarter deck to see the stout figure standing on the docks, his retinue behind, but spaced out to help avoid further spread.
Onmunson says:
"Your journey today represents our final hope. Can we count on you?"
Mance looks to Bonepipe, standing to his right, and then Teo to his left, his icy dreadlocks knocking together as he turns his head, producing the auditory equivalent of an aura radiating around him. Placing a thick furry glove on each of their shoulders, he looks back towards the leader of Nohme with confidence and speaks in a deep voice that complements the sounds of the resonating dreads that still hang in the air, "Have no fear Onmunson, the oracle revealed that the path towards finding the cure begins with the three of us setting out together just like this!" He decides to leave out the fact that much of the oracle was filled with dark and grim imagery making it seem like the chance of success was slim and would leave each of them forever changed. But it was important to leave the town with hope. At least this path had some chance of success, however small. All other paths in the vision led to doom.
OOC:
There's time here for conversation with Onmunson.
Suddenly fire blasts from all the pyrophone pipes at once, the sound is like a great horn, signalling that the crew had completed preparation and were ready to leave. Mance smiles with a somber determination and yells, "Stay warm with high hopes, Onmunson, and we will return in what seems like no time."

Nodding to his companions as though to say 'Ready?' he leaves the quarter deck by climbing up to the crow's nest in order to conduct during the departure. The ship slowly pulls away from the docks and heads out to sea as magical music and pyrotechnics fill the harbour with optimism before slowly fading into the cold darkness of the Frigid Depths.

Before you set sail, do any of your characters have any questions about the mission?
Sten Onmunson
As he watches the ship pull away, Sten gestures to one of his messengers to loose a small peregrine falcon, which soared quickly across the distance between the port and the ship. It circles a wide loop around the mast, before dropping a small package upon the deck of the ship.

"It's a crest from the Diarchy." The Burgomaster explains, briefly. "You're going to need it to expect to get any assistance out there. I wish you all a fortuitous journey and a hasty return."

Oops sorry, I sort of set us on our way. I assumed we had already got the mission deets during the 'prologue' (ooc intro and setting threads). But I'm sure there was lots of time to ask questions as the crew were preparing for departure, before the "Suddenly fire blasts from all pyrophone pipes ..." paragraph, so definitely ask any questions you'd like before we leave.

No worries! Those threads were just background information and getting things set up for before they got to Nohme. We're in the intro now, so if there's anything your character is unsure on or has suspicions about, it's a good time for them to ask/talk about it. If you all do just want to cast off though, that's fine too!

I made a little ooc edit to my above post to indicate further conversation with Onmunson.
"We plan to travel directly across to Syrinlya as it's the shortest crossing, unless you have reason to believe the Dwendalians in Balenpost are more likely to have had more recent contact with Cobalt Station." Mance asks as the ship preparations continue.
Dec 23, 2021 4:21 pm
"Roit! The statue of me an' me mates've gotta be at least twelve feet tall, yeah?" Bonepipe butts in. Mission details aren't for this brash arse-kicker-turned-performer, eternal showboat. The man is always on about the victory party.

Grinning, the muscular piper licks beringed fingers and adjusts the points on his red-dyed mohawk. The man never shuts up but Mance has only heard his partner talk about his homeland once, a place called Cokenay (Cheapside, naturally) which he described as a 'right pile o' shite'—a place drab and dreary where he never belonged.

"Gonna save the world, gotta look good, ei guv?"

I'm not sure if Mance asked that to Sten or to the ship at large, but presuming this is a question for him before you leave:
Sten Onmunson
"Ah, the Dwendalians at Balenpost aren't on the best of terms with their countrymen at the Station, and I'm afraid the symbol of the Diarchy won't do much good there." Sten replies. "But, you may plan your route however you please. You'll need to show that symbol to The Buyer at Syrinlya if you want any additional supplies, and that symbol will also work as a suitable unit of trade for the cure at Cobalt Station. Please take care not to lose it before then!"
OOC:
Aquafina, I can edit in any questions Teo has when you get back, if you have any.

With that, the Symphony of Ice and Fire heads out to sea. In mere hours the mainland of Wildemount disappears in the distance, and the dark sea surrounds the ship on every side. The temperature of the air plummets, the weather going from a snow-speckled chill, to a bone-deep iciness. It's becoming clear that the region you are encroaching upon is not particularly hospitable to life.

Just as the group prepares for a cold, if uneventful, trip, an incredible force erupts from the sea on the Symphony's port-side, causing the ship to rock dangerously to the side when jolted by the resulting wave.
OOC:
What does your character do when the ship tilts?
What does your character think is happening/could have caused this?

Mance grits his teeth against the cold icy mist that sprays into the air as the ship slams back down into the water after cresting the giant wave. He manages to keep his footing by holding onto the helm.

Looking out onto the undulating horizon all he sees are rows of icebergs dotting the dark background. Their motion seems chaotic until his eyes notice a row all moving in the same pattern. It immediately reminds him of a surface fish he'd seen in one of the river deltas of the Greying Wildlands as a child that had collected bunches of snow along its spines ...
[ +- ] Snowy river fish
... He grunts to himself in amusement, just my imagination, remembering the entire fish was only a few feet in length while in contrast the visible portion of these icebergs were each the size of a small house, they couldn't possibly be ... but then he hears Bonepipe's exclamation!

He doesn't wait for confirmation, he yells out an order, "All hands on deck! Load harpoons for protective action!!" and spins the wheel of the ship aggressively to bring the ship into a more defensive position facing in the direction Bonepipe is pointing.
OOC:
Not sure what Bonepipes sees yet, but trying to respond to his discovery. Do we get a +1 carried forward from his roll? Yep, I think we should take a small break to let aquafina catch up - it's definitely hard to get away and post on Christmas. We're still at the beginning of the encounter, so it's all good!

I'm going to take Bonepipe's Discern Realities as the question "What is about to happen?" - let me know if you want a different question!

I think only Bonepipe gets a +1 forward when acting on the answer to the Discern Realities question? Which is fine since the +1 wasn't going to help Mance's roll. Mance gets to mark XP, and I'll narrate the answer to Bonepipe's DR move and the results of Mance's DD move in about 24 hours.

Teo might also make a move in the meantime. If you'd like suggestions, Spout Lore or Defy Danger are good general ones, but if you're not sure what move to use, just RP what your character would do and roll 2 dice, and I'll let you know what move it is/what MOD to add.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Bonepipe sees the massive glaciers breaching up out of the sea and recognizes immediately that he was right - it's some sort of strange ice-crusted leviathan swimming about the ship. As it turns about, the Barbarian can see that it is about to try to rub it's glacier-like back up against the ship again, which could cause damage to the hull.

Mance reacts quickly to the sudden jolt - but perhaps too quickly. She ship is off-kilter already from the initial breach of the creature, and the sudden turning of the ship causes the ship to tilt even more drastically to the side, causing a few of the sailors to lose their footing and begin sliding toward the sea.
OOC:
Can everyone give me a Defy Danger (DEX) roll to see if you can keep your footing? (Bonepipe still has a +1 forward to this) If you fail you won't fall into the sea immediately, but you'll need to think of a way to avoid it.
OOC:
If you succeed on Defy Danger, you can make your moves as usual. What will you do?

Teo finishes packing his bag and slings it over his shoulder with a sad sigh. He opens the door of his tiny treehouse cabin, suspended 50 feet in the air, and walks out onto the wooden walkway. He looks out over the village he's lived his whole life within, and sees no movement. Where elders used to meditate, where hunters used to prepare for a journey, and where children used to swing and play, there is nothing but the gentle, quiet fall of snowflakes.

A small noise catches Teo's attention, the sound of a door opening to another cabin in a tree across the small clearing. A medic dressed from head to toe in protective clothes exit the cabin. The medic notices Teo standing watching them exit, and shakes his head defeatedly as they move to the next cabin. A disembodied creaky voice speaks to Teo in his mind, "Stay focused, my child. There is still hope for them, but you need to git your skinny butt moving! Did you grab an extra snack in case you get hungry?"

Teo smiles with a roll of his eyes and pats his pocket where he stashed an extra bread roll, knowing his grandma would demand he takes one. Even from beyond the grave, his grandma was always overly worried about him not eating enough, maybe her 'unfinished business' was just that she didn't plump Teo up enough before she passed. The voice says "Good, now git going." Teo's eyes flash and his body becomes a spiritual mist for a moment, then coalesces into the shape of a falcon with small reindeer antlers. Falcon Teo takes off into the sky towards Nohme.
Teo is idly helping others with their jobs, not quite sure what to do since he's never been on a proper boat before, but is making sure to stay a good distance away from everyone. He's infected enough people with the Frigid Woe, it's best to avoid spreading it any further, especially to any cremated on this boat, where it'd spread like wildfire.

He picks up a small crate and is carrying it across the deck as the ship suddenly lurches to one side. The crate he was holding goes flying out of his hands. His feet become spiritual mist and then reform into owl talons and attempt to grip the wooden planks of the ship below him.

Great intro aquafina!
Bonepipe springs into action with a glorious flair! He easily manages to swing down and save the three Symphony sailors that were just about to tumble overboard into the Frigid Depths. The sailors grab hold of the ship's rigging for balance, shaken, but they all appear ready to do what's needed.

Mance wheels the ship back the other way just before he loses traction and begins to slip on the ice-slicked deck.
OOC:
Here's the hard bargain: Mance can grab the wheel to keep from slipping, but that will crash the Symphony directly into the creature, which could, potentially, cause significant damage to both. OR, Mance can continue his slide, but will crash into Teo, which will prevent Mance from falling overboard, but may cause damage to Teo. The last option, of course, is to not defy danger and fall off the boat.
Teo's talons slip on the icy wood as the ship sways violently, causing the druid to lose balance and tumble toward the sea in a mass of ruffled feathers.
OOC:
Teo will need to think of a way to avoid falling off the boat (or simply transform and go into the water, if they prefer). Since Teo failed his roll, there's the potential he'll get knocked into by Mance (above). Teo should also mark XP!
OOC:
Also, Teo, be sure roll Shapeshifter (roll+WIS) for your transformation!
Dec 29, 2021 12:38 pm
Teo, noticing that his talons keep slipping on the wooden planks of the ship, gives up trying to catch his footing and instead finishes his transformation into a Falcon.

In his small, nimble form Teo bobs and weaves through the craziness of the ship’s deck, escaping from the danger of everyone crashing into him.
OOC:
I got 3 hold!! The falcon’s special moves are Escape to the Sky and Spot Prey. I’d like to use Escape to the Sky to hopefully avoid the danger of crashing into anyone

Nice! In that case, Mance's second option might have him bump into another one of the Symphony's crewmembers, which may pitch them overboard.
About how large is the crew on the Symphony, Mance?
Dec 30, 2021 12:57 am
The Captain watches the chaos unfolding across the ship as he tries to recover and is inspired by the heroics that he sees. Teo had looked doomed to fall overboard if not for his last second transformation, magically escaping into the air as a fleet-feathered falcon, while Bonepipe swung out over the edge of the ship, like the wings of Glory itself carried him, to save a handful of the crew about to slip off the deck.

The acts of his companions motivated his own efforts as he managed to right the ship, but only by also taking a sudden and unexpect step backwards to keep his footing and exert enough leverage on the wheel. Unfortunately, his leg drove directly into the path of a passing crew member.

Helga, the Master-at-arms of the Symphony and one of the longest serving and most trustworthy of the 30-person crew, had been hustling a massive bundle of harpoon bolts across the deck as the ill-timed evasive maneuver wreaked havoc. Her strong, shout dwarven stature, with its low center of gravity, had helped her steady herself as the ship's deck listed wildly, but she could not have foreseen Mance's sudden back-step while righting the wheel.

Harpoon bolts clattered across the deck as the woman lurched forward. Her short legs scrambled desperately to regain control, but the slick conditions made the attempt look almost comical as she disappeared over the railing!

"HELGA! NOOOOOO!" Mance rushed to where the woman had tumbled, only barely avoiding the same fate.

As smoothly as a melody floats from the strings to the horns of an orchestra, one of the helmsman stepped into replace Mance at the wheel, holding the ship steady now that it was in a better position.

Mance peered over the edge of the deck to see Helga's fate. Hanging upside down, only a few feet from plunging into the icy depths, the dwarf hung by her foot, tangled in the rope of a harpoon bolt.

Mance grabbed the rope and immediately realized that he didn't have the strength to pull her back, it was all he could do not to let her slip further towards the freezing water.

His deep commanding voice beckoned to the rest of the crew for aid ...

But then, hearing Bonepipe behind him is music to Mance's ears. In fact, he suddenly has an idea for the end of Bonepipe's bagpipe concerto! But that must wait for now, he thinks to himself. With Bonepipe's added strength they quickly heave the wide-eyed and disoriented Helga back onto the deck.

"My sincerest apologies Helga! I fear that was completely my fault, but I'm glad the crew was ready to help at a moments notice!" He emphasizes Bonepipe's contribution by clasping Bonepipe's hand in celebration and pulling him in for a hearty slap on the back.

Once the ship steadies after being rocked by the collision, Mance looks over the side of the boat to inspect the hull for damage (OOC: Discern Realities?) and then out towards the leviathan wondering whether the harpoon strategy had any chance of success.

"Teo," he yells up towards the falcon who has a better view and also understands the mentality of animals, "Do you think the harpoons are working? If we keep defending like this, will we scare it off? Or do we need another strategy? I'm not sure how much more the ship can handle before it takes serious damage!"

Thinking quickly, Mance forms a back-up plan. He had dabbled in mimicking whale-song with the lowest notes on the Symphony's flame-organ during a performance a few years ago, perhaps it would placate the beast?? Might as well prepare all options. "Firemaster Byron, stoke the furnaces! I want full heat for the organs, asap!"

In the meantime, he needed to be sure the hull was intact. If they were taking on water, they would be finished. "Helga! Bonepipe! Keep trying to scare the beast with the harpoons, or anything else you can think of! I need to go below deck to assess the damage."

Same basic premise, you succeed in evading the damage, but there's a complication, in this case the harpoon launcher getting out of alignment, that will need to be re-aligned before shooting it is possible again.
OOC:
I'm thinking it's the "What is about to happen?" question you'll want the answer to in this situation:
As Mance checks on the ship's hull below deck. It's still holding, and fortunately, it looks like there are no leaks caused by that last his - but the bard can tell that the Symphony isn't up for too many more hits from that creature. A few more small hits, or one large one could easily cause the ship to spring a leak, and they're much to far out to expect any assistance or rescue.

Getting it away from the ship is a high priority.

Brrrr! Partial success. I assume that means I don't take the debility (at least not yet) but do come up against a complication.
The water's cold, so cold! Worse, it messes up Bonepipe's hair! With a roar that echoes across the water, the barbarian hurls the harpoon at the leviathan! A throw from too far away. An impossible throw. The first shot falls short, but with a snarl Bonepipe grabs another harpoon and this time the shot covers the distance!

OOC:
For the partial success on the Volley I choose "You have to take what you can get: You have to take several shots, reducing your ammo by one."

As Teo soars above the ship studying the leviathan, he can't help but admire it. The enormity of it, the beauty of it, the strength of it, it's all just so wonderful. A spirit this large and powerful must be so wise to have such a hold over nature , to grow to be that size and survive in such harsh conditions. Then, the leviathan breaches the water and nearly capsizes the ship with a large wave, Teo is rocked back into the moment.

Teo swoops back down towards the ship after hearing Mance call out their name. He reverts back to his human form mid-air over the water to yell in response, "KEEP SHOOTING IT! I HAVE AN IDEA!"

Before hitting the water, his body dissipates and then expands tenfold into a massive black and light frost-blue orca (with tiny little reindeer antlers of course) that splashes into the water below. Teorca retreats a bit further below the surface before turning around and speeding towards the leviathan, attempting to bash the side of the enormous creature, hoping that if the party is able to do some damage to it and attack from multiple fronts, it might be scared off.

As Teorca's sturdy head rams into the underbelly of the leviathan, they can feel something inside the leviathan crack and snap loudly, but the bump to the head leaves Teo a bit dazed for a moment, leaving himself vulnerable for a moment too long!

Rushing back up to the deck after checking for damage, Mance hears Teo's encouragement for more harpoons before the druid transforms again and dives into the sea.

Following the suggestion, Mance hurries to the launcher, but finds Helga having trouble loading another bolt. "It keeps jamming Captain, the beast's impact with the ship mis-aligned it!"

He's about to help Helga re-align the launcher when he sees Bonepipe's meteoric hurl, the harpoon streaks towards the creature, sinking deep into the creature with incredible impact.

"Looks like we have a fully functional launcher right there," Mance says to Helga pointing to Bonepipe with a smile. "Don't worry about this one for now, go make sure Bonepipe has a steady supply of harpoons ... if we have any left!" he adds seeing how few harpoons were left in their supply. (OOC: given Bonepipe's partial success choice of using up ammo)

Reassessing the situation, he notices that despite the herculean effort, the barbarian was completely drenched in icy water. Bonepipe's focus on the leviathan was so strong that he was completely ignoring it, but it was going to freeze him solid before long, even if he refuses to acknowledge.

"Byron? Are those furnaces ready?" Mance runs over to the main flame-organ and blasts flames from all pipes at once. The resounding sound, like a horn out of hell, floods the entire ship with a blast of protective heat.

As the sound fades into the night air, he begins playing the deep soothing refrain of his whale-song inspired piece hoping it might sooth the creature from its attack.
OOC:
Using the flame-organ to use by Bard Move "Arcane Art" to either remove the ongoing CON check from Bonepipe from the icy splash ("Their mind is shaken clear of one enchantment") or if that doesn't make sense then "heal 1d8 damage."

The whale-song is more for flavour for now, but Mance hopes that it might help bring the beast out of it's aggressive mentality and help it move on (I'm happy for it to be his next "Move" if it needs a different roll).

Yep, Bonepipe doesn't have the debility, but the complication is that you'll need to roll CON again later! A full success would let you power through the cold without needing the check again. So, it's not an immediate complication, but one he'll need to deal with later - though it looks like Mance has his back on that one!

The 1D8 was higher than the 1D6, so it's not a Herculean complication, just a Volley one, I think?

I'd say the hand-thrown harpoon doesn't get the +2, it's the harpoon launcher that gives it that extra oomph. Also I think our harpoons came at the Ranger standard 3 ammo - so we're now at 2 ammo with harpoons now!
Bonepipe hurls several harpoons, one of which flies straight and true right into the beasts side, sinking deep into its blubbery mass. It flails back into the sea, dark blood coloring the water in its wake.

Teorca rams full force into the leviathans underbelly, and the sharp crack of ice can be heard even by those on the ship. The beast rolls around in pain, smacking the dazed Teo with a fin.

The furnaces heat up, the air around the ship growing warm, then steamy, then dry as Mance's magic combines with the soulful sound of the flame-organ. Bonepipe can feel the frosty water drying on his skin and warming his bones.
OOC:
While it's not an enchantment, per say, I think it fits the fiction to have Mance's performance battle cold, considering he's using a fire-organ, so I'll allow it to clear that complication. Another roll would be needed to try to placate the creature, however.
The great creature lets out a deep gurgling sound of pain, bleeding profusely from the harpoon in its eye and side, and it's swimming seems to be slowed significantly from the hit it took from the druid. It dives down deeper into the water, to evade anymore incoming harpoons, though Teo can see it turning around to prepare for another leaping attack.

With many exultant chest-poundings and hip-thrustings, and fiery blasts from his bagpipe, Bonepipe dances around the main deck, fully confident that they've scared the monster off.

"HAH! Did ya see that harpoon throw?! That tosser's tossed, innit?!"
Jan 2, 2022 10:07 pm
Seeing Bonepipe's celebrations makes Mance think that it's working! He's not sure if it was the harpoons, Teorca or his whale-song, or a combination of all, but he continues to play just in case. He doesn't want to stop prematurely only to have the Leviathan return. Also, something doesn't seem completely right, Teorca hasn't resurfaced yet either, which worries Mance and makes him skeptical whether the danger has completely resolved ...
OOC:
I think my idea of the whale-song is that it soothes the creature to consider us less of a threat and therefore it isn't willing to die to get rid of us and will leave us alone after less HP total damage. Sort of like we're not worth the trouble. Or something like that.

OOC:
I truly agonized over how to give you a worse outcome, hard bargain, or ugly choice on a roll to calm a giant fish-creature, and this is what I came up with.
Still a little dazed from the blow before, Teorca isn't able to get between the leviathan and the ship in time, getting pushed back by the force of the the larger creature's movements.

Just as it seems like the creature will surely try to tip the ship, the sound of Mance's whale song can be heard permeating the sea in a haunting melody. The creature hesitates, it's momentum slowing until when it comes to the ship it simply pushes up against it.

The celebrating Bonepipe can see the creature's iceberg-like protrusions on the creature's spine coming up around the sides of the ship, holding it like a claw and lifting it slightly out of the water.

The creature makes a long sonorous call back, a sound full of both melody and pain, then begins to swim away, with the Symphony still nested on top of it.
OOC:
The giant fish has stopped being hostile, but you are now going on a ride on it. Some basic options are to attack it again and risk angering it (or potentially killing it), or keeping on it and letting it take you (potentially) off course. There may be other options as well, but on a giant ice-fish's back is the status at the moment.
OOC:
What will you do?
Jan 3, 2022 7:22 pm
OOC:
Awesome! I actually think that's a great idea for a partial success on my whale-song!
Seeing their predicament, Mance thinks their best option is to tilt the ship forward to encourage it to slide off the iceberg-like formation, perhaps with a little encouragement from Teorca.

He continues to play the flame-organ to keep the leviathan calm and sings inspirational instructions to the crew with poetic lyrics that effectively communicate ... "Everyone to the bow ... the weight will tilt us forward ... to slide the boat off ... throw Teorca a rope ... they can help pull ...
OOC:
Ha ha, sorry I'm don't have time to make the lyrics pretty or impressive, so you'll have to imagine what they sound like yourself.

I'm using Bard's Arcane Arts to "The next time someone successfully assists the target with aid, they get +2 instead of +1." Feel free to do whatever action you think is best. My idea is that Teorca can Aid and Bonepipes can lead the crew in the sliding (Defy Danger) action or vice versa, i.e. Bonepipes can Aid by getting the crew to the front (or some other helpful idea to tilt us forward) and Orca pulls us free with a Defy Danger action. Or if you have any better ideas, then my +2 bonus can apply to that instead.

The crew is definitely more confused than inspired by Mance's lyrics, though this is likely because they are still reeling from the fact that their entire ship is now being carried on the back of a massive fish. The crew tries to shuffle over to the bow, only for the ship to tilt and slide down even more firmly into the iceberg like spikes on the creature's back.

Now that you're up very close and personal with the ice, however, you can see that it seems to have a sort of inner aura about it - a slight magic glow that reminds you of the frozen villagers of Nohme.
OOC:
Mance definitely marks XP for that one. But, some more info about this weird fish.

Jan 4, 2022 11:27 pm
Mance finishes the whale song performance with a sigh of exasperation. His plan had failed and, if anything, had made things worse. Now the only way to get off would be to lift the ship upwards.

He walks dejectedly to the edge of the ship to get a better view of their situation. Trailing in the water are the ropes of the two harpoons that are stuck in the leviathan's body. A crazy idea crosses his mind, Could we steer the creature with these ropes?
[ +- ] Riding a great beast
But before he vocalizes his thoughts, he notices the strange glow within the icy formations along the leviathan's spine. "By the Ice Maiden's Mercy! That's the Woe! The creature is infected by the Frigid Woe! We need to get off this thing immediately before the whole ship is contaminated!!!!"

Mance facepalms in frustration as he realizes all his efforts to calm the beast were for nothing. There was only one option, "Do whatever you can to get the beast to dive!" If the creature submerges back into the water, The Symphony should float up out of the spines ... he hopes.

He kicks open one of the furnaces and starts shoveling hot coals over the edge of the ship onto the leviathan's exposed skin.

Teorca realizes his failure to scare off the leviathan and his failure to defend the ship. He winces his eyes as the shame clouds his eyes and he remains there, fighting the urge to give up and just give in; the urge to just swim back to shore, find an abandoned cabin in the woods, and freeze in his guilt for all eternity, where his mistakes and failures won't have the chance to ruin the lives of those around him.

He nearly loses the inner battle before a crotchety old voice pipes up, "What in the goshdarn blazes are you doin, youngin? Now is not the time to be wallowin' like a clean pig!" Teorca lets out a big air bubble and cant help but smile. "I can throw on a cup of hot tea later and you can get all this out... well, actually, you'll have to throw on the tea, I can't do that from my neck of the woods. Now come on, git!"

Teorca opens his eyes and notices that the ship is now a hundred feet away. He speeds back up to it, sinks lower below the surface, then leaps out of the water, transforming mid-air back into an elf and landing back on the deck of the ship soaking wet with red eyes and

He finds Mance and tells them, "Sorry, my last idea didn't work out too well, its will is too strong. Do you guys have any ideas for how to get off the back of this creature? I could transform into the orca again on the deck of the ship. That would give us some more weight to slide off, but might damage the ship."

Mance begins shovelling hot coals out onto the creature, but the angle is all wrong, causing the coals to bounce off the creature's scales and into the sea, creating a hissing cloud of steam. The bard sees that where it hits the scales, it leaves a singe - clearly damaging the creature, though he thinks he'll need to get a better angle on this thing if his plan is going to work fully.
OOC:
I'm going to say this is a Volley - so a 9 is a slight complication. I don't think the ammo one is relevant here, so choose between putting yourself in danger (to get a better shot at hitting this thing) or reducing your damage by 1d6 (I don't think rolls can so subtraction, so you may need to roll separately).
Bonepipe, meanwhile, has a far more aggressive approach - swinging down to begin stomping aggressively at the side of the giant fish. He gets the creature right in the side of it's gills, and the creature immediately flinches, thrashing out at the Barbarian and smacking him with a fin.
OOC:
Bonepipe takes 4 damage.
Fortunately, however, that damage convinces the huge creature to dive back beneath the waves, causing the Symphony to crash back onto the sea's surface. Unfortunately, Bonepipe, still hanging overboard by the rope tied around his waste finds himself falling towards the sea!

Firemaster Byron heaves a sigh of relief as the creature retreats, an exhalation that emerges as a brief puff of smoke. It’s rare that a creature of her size has the opportunity to feel small—she is twice Helga’s height, weighs as much as the boatswain and the quartermaster and one of the midshipmen combined—but having been dwarfed by a very cold fish of all things has put the fear of the gods in her. For now.

Byron lingers a little bit closer to Teo than she normally would; ships usually don’t come with druids but perhaps, she thinks begrudgingly, they should. She’d never say such a thing, though it’s clear on her face at the moment, and without thinking she worries her bangle for a moment.

She turns to Mance.

"Captain," Byron says with a nod, "excellent playing. As usual."

She looks off across the deck, surveying the crew and the party to ensure everyone is doing all right, and her eye alights upon Bonepipe, drenched as he is.

She gestures for him to come stand by the furnaces and dry off.

Teo recognizes the conflicted feelings he has towards Byron, and, acknowledging that those feelings go both ways, does not further push anything.

"I doubt the fish was from Hell, Bonepipe, but it was magnificent and mighty nonetheless. I will definitely be studying and reflecting on it later on, I have never seen anything like it." He turns to the captain, "What shall we do now, what can I do to help?"

"Wherever it was from I hope we don’t bump into it again."

She shudders—partly a function of the cold, but partly from a shout she’d heard go up among the crew: the Woe was spotted on the great sea-beast’s spine.

"I probably oughta survey for damage," she offers, and stalks off to the deck’s edge, leaving Teo behind.
Jan 9, 2022 6:27 pm
OOC:
@akorn Nice first post! I like how you played into the size comparisons. It's a cool idea that being the biggest normally would make you uncomfortable when something bigger than you shows up because it's so unusual to you.
Mance sighs with relief as well as the leviathan swims off into the distance.

"Thank you Byron, the fires were perfectly stoked! I wouldn't have been able to hit those deep notes otherwise," Mance replied with gratitude.

Seeing the dripping wet Barbarian on deck, Mance eyes widen in horror as a terrible thought occurs to him ...

"HALT! Everyone, get away from Bonepipe! Give him space to stand near a furnace to warm up, but don't go near him."

Looking towards his dear friend with concern and sadness, "That beast had symptoms of the Frigid Woe and you touched it! We must make sure you're not contaminated else it could spread to the whole crew!"

"On the bright side, your heroic acts of bravery and sacrifice have given me the inspiration I needed to complete your concerto! I know exactly how it will go now," he says with a warm smile knowing the glory of being immortalized in music will help Bonepipe deal with the potentially bad news.

"Lower the row boat! We'll tow him behind until we can access if he develops symptoms."
OOC:
Do you want to handle this narratively or with Discern Realities, or Sprout Lore? Teo was not on board the ship when the suspicion of the leviathan being infected with the Woe was first made, but suddenly things begin clicking in Teo's mind. The leviathan did give off a strong aura of magical coldness, and its movements seemed slower than one would imagine for such a fearsome beast. Then Teo realizes that he came into direct contact with the leviathan as well. He was shapeshifted at the moment of contact, but Teo is unsure whether or not that affects anything.

Teo immediately takes a step back from everyone and covers his mouth with his soaking-wet shirt. "I also made contact with the levitathen when I was fighting it underwater. I will also go on the row boat."

Teo immediately tries to recall the symptoms and timeline of getting infected with the Woe so that he and Bonepipe might be able to quarantine correctly and efficiently.

Off work, so I can post for real now.
The heat of battle kept Bonepipe warm - though the furnaces definitely helped him dry off.

When Mance raises the alarm that the barbarian - and Teo - may have contracted the Woe from their contact with the creature, a startled murmur rises from the crew. Upon being asked, Teo tries to think back to what he'd seen of the disease in his home village.
OOC:
Something interesting rather than something useful is a strange distinction for this move, but I'll give it a shot:
Teo knows when he brought the contaminated food to his village - but he didn't learn about the contamination until much later, and by then it was too late - though the ice statues didn't start popping up until after 10 days. The one thing he can remember that all of those infected would complain of was a pervasive feeling of cold, that could never warm up.

Byron begins cataloging what raw components they have on hand to fix the hull. Mance, having already checked on the hull, can point out the slight damage to the ship to her.
OOC:
That's a cool way to use Hand-Crafted! I can definitely see Bryon welding some metal plates onto the hull to reinforce the area where it was weakened by the creature. Will it be just regular plates of patchwork, or something cool? If you haven't seen Chalrytharendir's inspiration for the Symphony, I recommend checking this video out because it's super awesome.

"If we were in drydock I could do better, but for now it’s gonna be a quick patch job," Byron mumbles as she sizes up the area Mance indicates. "Still, imagine how bad she’d look without these magic claws."

Better to throw herself into work than to let her mind wander, to have to contend with the possibility of respected comrades and siblings-in-arms being Woe-inflicted. We’ll have all sleepless night to consider that.

"I'm not sure what the timeline is exactly. It varies of course, but usually the first victims turn to ice about 10 days after first exposure. Of course, we all feel cold because of our surroundings. But Bonepipes, join me over by the fire and see if we warm up at all. An unwarmable soul is perhaps the strongest symptom of the Woe." he says with a sadness in his voice that could cool an already frozen heart.

Teo walks over to the furnace, takes off his gloves and waits patiently, silently praying to the spirits of the elements, and honestly, to the spirits of luck, to let him feel himself warm up.

As heat wafts out from the Symphony's furnaces, both Teo and Bonepipe are relieves at the sensation of warmth that envelops them, chasing away the chill.
OOC:
I'm going to leave it at that for now, but it's up to you if you still want to go the rowboat route! Once you're prepared to continue on to Syrinlya, let me know and I'll move the scene forward!
Jan 12, 2022 7:38 am
"I was worried you might take it like that Bonepipe, but trust me, it is not a boat for invalids. We'll name it the RAFT OF CHAMPIONS!! You only need to be towed if you can't keep up by rowing, so take that as a challenge and a good way to keep you warm," he says in jest to keep the situation light-hearted.

Hearing Teo's experience, he suggests that they should stay in the rowboat until they reach Syrinlya, coming back onto the ship once a day to check if they can warm up by the furnace. "We'll give you as many furs as we can fit in the boat though, so if you don't want to warm-up by rowing the whole way, there's other ways to stay warm in between furnace visits," he reassures Teo, although he wouldn't be surprised if Bonepipe takes his challenge seriously.

"If neither of you get an unshakable chill before then, we'll assume you're safe."

He then begins to direct the crew to correct their course after the encounter with the sea monster and sail for Syrinlya.
Jan 12, 2022 10:05 am
Bonepipe does in fact take the whole thing seriously. H3 insists on choosing the rowboat, and even paints RAFT OF CHAMPINS on the side (misspelled, of course). And gets ready to row.

"Don't worry, Teo. You just bundle up nice in those furs. Leave the rowing to me!"
Jan 12, 2022 3:02 pm
Teo shrugs, "Gladly. I will be meditating, wake me if you need me for anything."

He sits down on the rowboat opposite Bonepipe, then transforms into a lynx with a tiny set of frosty reindeer antlers atop its head. He walks in circles in the pile of furs that the crew gave them, dragging and nudging them until they form a nice little bed. He throws one over his back then sits on his hind legs. He closes his feline eyes and remains in that position. After a moment or two, from beneath his eye lids, his eyes begin glowing a dull blue and he remains perfectly still as his mind dances and mingles with the spirits of the land.

Byron gazes off the stern at the two beleaguered group members in their fur-lined rowboat.

"Probably more comfortable than the bunks," she jokes to Helga.
Jan 12, 2022 7:21 pm
"What's wrong with the bunks?" Helga teases back with a chuckle, her shorter stature obviously making them much more comfortable for her. Their location below deck also reminded her of her underground homeland. She loved the open sea, but still feels a nostalgia for tight quarters in dark underground caverns.

Watching the two exiles, Helga considers the vast difference in the personality and culture of Bonepipe and Teo. After a few minutes she adds, "Wanna take bets on how long they can take of each other? I'll put down 2 rum rations that Bonepipe goes crazy watching Teo meditate like that before we reach Syrinlya!"

Assuming no more major incidents before Syrinlya, Mance spends most of the time scribbling down the ideas he came up with for Bonepipe's Flaming Bagpipe concerto like a mad artist trying desperately to translate the concepts in his head to music that he can communicate to the rest of the Symphony, so they can properly accompany Bonepipe's unique play style. He's getting very excited about it now ... This is going to be a Masterpiece!

The group sails on, with Bonepipe rowing powerfully enough to keep up with the Symphony herself. Mance drafts his magnum opus, while Byron welds metal plates along the weakened parts of the ship, reinforcing them for continued travel.

And Teolynx meditates, his mind flowing outward into nature itself.

[The corruption! The corruption! It's spreading! Flee! Flee!] Teo hears the call of gulls above like they're speaking aloud. A flock swiftly flies across the sky, now tinted orange for the impending sunset - they seem to be fleeing from something a bit northwest of their current course.
OOC:
I figured this would be a great time for Teo's Spirit Tongue to activate!
Even if Teo tries to call to them, or get them to stop, the gulls continue their panicked flight back towards the mainland. The one exception isn't a gull at all, but a brilliant crimson-plumbed bird, holding a single stem of grain. The bird flies in behind the gulls, quietly, then just as silently flies a circle around the mast of the ship, then back immediately the way it came - that same north-northwest direction.
OOC:
What will you do?
Though Teo is the only one who can understand the birds, anyone out on the deck would have seen them fly by. (If Mance is in his quarters he might have missed it, or maybe he saw it out a port window?)
Jan 13, 2022 3:10 am
Clambering bodily back onto the deck, Byron watches the gulls and their strange red companion fly by.

"Odd behavior," she mumbles to no one in particular.

She isn’t much of an ornithologist—instead she plumbs the depths of her memories for any relevant sailor tales. A crimson bird likely does not count for "red skies at night", and that certainly wasn’t an albatross…

Upon understanding the birds' calls, Teo is shaken out of his trance. He immediately stands at attention, his ears and tail sticking straight up as he suddenly strains to hear all of their words.

He hesitates, not knowing exactly what to do with this information, not wanting to act without seeking permission from the captain, but feeling like he doesn't have time to fly to the ship, find the captain, relay the information, and wait for a response before the bird becomes to of sight.

In a misty explosion, Teo transforms out of lynx forms and leans over the rowing Bonepipe. "I'm gonna go follow that bird. Let the captain know that the birds are trying to warn us of corruption that is heading our way. And without waiting for as much of a recognition of his words from Bonepipe, Teo's form shrinks into that of a falcon- Falceon, if you will (it's getting harder and harder to mesh Teo's name with that of the animals' lol)- and takes to the sky, chasing after the red bird.

No worries! I didn't bring it up because it wouldn't have been much help in that particular case, but it makes sense now!

The ship originally started in a northwest direction, but has adjusted its heading North now to get to Syrinlya. The direction the bird is headed isn't too far off the ship's current heading, but since you're a ways from land the slight angle off course could definitely put the ship off a good few hours.
Falteon takes to the air after the red-plumbed bird, which never veers of its course as it flies straight and true toward the continent of Eiselcross.

As they fly, it becomes clear to Teo that the bird is definitely leading him somewhere - but to where he does not know, and the bird remains silent. He can tell that this path may take him a distance away from the others - does he still choose to still follow?
OOC:
This will split the party, though I suspect only temporarily for Teo to scout it out. I do want to give Teo the choice to press forward or turn back, and the rest of the group the choice to continue on their current route, or to change their angle to follow Teo.

Mance comes out of his quarters onto deck at Bonepipe's booming call. Joining Byron to learn more about what happened, he sees no reason not to adjust their course slightly to follow the druid so they don't lose him, even if it means it delays their arrival slightly.

"I get the impression that Teo wouldn't ditch us like that on a whim."

He gives the helms the signal to adjust course north-northwest and then watches the horizon in anticipation.

When they arrive, Falteo takes to the sky once more and does a flyby around the air above the wreckage to get a better view of all of its angles. Bonepipe is too busy rowing the RAFT OF CHAMPINS to pay too much attention to his surroundings, which quite nearly causes him to run directly into a glacier just barely peeking out of the water.
OOC:
I'm going to withhold the complication for now, since, potentially, Teo might alert Bonepipe with Aid to give him the +1. If he doesn't get the Aid, the complication will be something you notice a little later, that way things can keep moving!
After some effort, Bonepipe pulls up to the side of the ship, which is half-tilted into the water.
OOC:
Bonepipe can mark XP for the failed Discern Realities!
Byron, meanwhile, is keeping an eye out for anything unusual, and gasps when she realizes that one of these glaciers has an eye.
OOC:
The Discern Realities question I think is best answered here: What here is not what it appears to be?
Fortunately, it's not a moving one - but what the group had mistaken for glaciers appears to instead be the frozen corpse of another giant ice-fish. What's even more surprising is that it doesn't even seem to be the same one they fought before. It's entire body is solid ice, its head and tail curled around the wrecked ship.

Mance, through his monoscope, can see the name of the ship painted on the side - The Flying Remorhaz - but the name doesn't ring any bells with him. He'll have to remember to look that up later.
OOC:
Mance can mark XP!
The red bird doesn't say anything to Teo, but instead looks down toward the trapdoor leading to be lower deck of the ship.
OOC:
So, the only things Aid will assist with is Bonepipe's Defy Danger roll - bumping it from a 9 to a 10. However, if Teo keeps it as a Discern Realities roll, he would discover the answer to 3 out of of the following questions (leaving out the one Byron got):

What happened here recently?
What is about to happen?
What should I be on the lookout for?
What here is useful or valuable to me?

"Flying What?" she grabs the eye-piece and takes a look herself. "Re-mor-haz," she sounds out, "Never heard of it."

Mance writes a note about it on one of the music sheets in his pocket, so he'll remember it later once they get into Syrinlya, then waits on deck patiently while the others explore the wreck more closely.

There's not much to be seen on the deck of the ship - the hull is cracked beyond repair, and most anything that might have been on deck that wasn't tied down is most certainly at the bottom of the Depths by now.

The trapdoor to the lower deck of the Flying Remorhaz cracks as it opens, frost that accumulated along the edges breaking as Bonepipe opens it wide.

The stairs lead down to the dark underbelly of the ship, but, fortunately, it seems this area has not yet been flooded by seawater, though certainly the cargo hold of the ship, down one level further, is likely almost completely submerged.

Peering down, the group can see that this lower deck has two main areas, the captain's quarters - closed and locked - and the general crew area and oft-used supplies. Most things in this general storage area are thrown into disarray, likely from when the ship crashed, and the three can see that there is a cannon fallen on it's side among the boxes of rations. Quite a bit of firepower for such a small ship.

Falteo's falcon-sharp eyes scan the area, taking in the little details. The thing that catches his eye, immediately, is the ice-statue of a sailor nearly entirely hidden and partially crushed by the overturned cannon. Upon more focused examination, Teo is shocked to see that the face of the man is familiar!

It brings him back those 10 days ago, when he was purchasing food for his village. A man he hadn't seen in town before was selling frozen fruits and vegetables from islands at incredibly cheap prices - produce that ended up being contaminated with the disease! The druid knew he would never forget that man's face, and here it is again - frozen in ice like so many from his village.
OOC:
What happened here recently? The crew of the Flying Remorhaz smuggled contaminated goods which lead to the spread of the Frigid Woe. Unfortunately, they were not immune to the disease, and died shortly after (while also fighting this giant fish - very unlucky).
Teo realizes, also, that this ship and its crew might have been the first to come in contact with the Woe, and that there might be some record of it somewhere.
OOC:
What here is useful/valuable to us? The Captain's Log of the ship's travel should be in the captain's room, which should hold more details of where they first encountered the Woe. On a different note: it may be difficult (but not impossible) to take the cannon, but since the area isn't flooded, the gunpower for it should still be good.
As Byron and Bonepipe take any steps closer to the trapdoor, Teo can see and feel the slight shifts of the ship's balance on the sea-ice that could not be entirely attributed to the waves. He gets the feeling that the crashed ship is not so solidly entombed in this ice that reckless movement won't cause problems.
OOC:
What is about to happen? More of a 'could possibly/is likely' to happen: Teo can sense that moving too recklessly will cause the ship to tip fully into the ocean.
OOC:
What will you do?

"Cannon," Byron whispers—there doesn’t seem to be anyone to disturb, but she feels as though she ought to—and she jabs a clawed finger in its direction.

"We’ll probably find some lead on board. And you thought my fireworks were loud," she grins.

Not having noticed the frozen man yet, she suggests the Symphony’s crew lift the boxes of rations, and then fixes her eyes on the shut door. Intriguing… Byron takes a step in its direction.

"Looks like the skipper's bunk. I bet it'll be locked. Gimme room, I'll break it down."
OOC:
Unless Teo shares his realization from the Discern Realities, it might not occur to Bonepipe to look for the captain's log. Nor notice the precariousness of the wreck's position.

Might be safer for Byron to unmake the lock than for Bonepipe to kick that door. ;-)
Jan 20, 2022 2:29 am
"You’ve already got room, at least until this thing passes. As for the door, I don’t doubt you could smash it off its hinges, Chilly, but I think this needs a delicate touch."

She gives him a pointed look, strolls up to the door, and rubs some heat into her hands.

Falteo flies down off Bonepipe's shoulder and begins searching the room, distracted by the sudden realization of the body staring back at him encased in ice and realization that they are in a lot of danger if they make too much of a ruckus. Just as he was beginning to turn to face Byron and Bonepipe, the red-hot piece of metal comes sliding across the floor towards him and the gunpowder surrounding them.

Teo immediately shifts back to his elven form and takes out his shillelagh, trying to knock the piece of metal away from the cannon and the gunpowder. He calls out to the others, "Be careful! This ship is one small shift away from sinking into the sea." After attempting to move the piece of metal away from the gunpowder, he remains still, trying to get a read on if all of that sudden movement has caused any shifting or swaying of the ship itself, and waiting to tell the others of the body and the captain's log idea until after he's assessed the situation.

The ship is good for now, and we'll go forward assuming Teo tells Bonepipe and Byron that there is a Woe-frozen body over by the cannons and that the captain's log should be in that room.
The broken door to the captain's quarters swings open on its hinges, revealing the room beyond. The room reveals two more Woe-frozen corpses - two to be exact.

One stood at the desk - a large worn-leather book, open, is caught between his frozen hand and the hardwood of the desk. The man appeared to have succumbed to the illness in the middle of ripping out and burning several pages, though the lantern he was using for that purpose has long burned out, the page ashes scattered.

The other poor soul appeared to have lost his battle against the Woe while lifting a chest from under one of the shelves, still crouched down with his arms around it.

The room itself is a mess - books and broken pieces of ship models scattered in the crash - but gives off the impression of having been quite nicely organized before then. Along with the desk and chest, there is a bed, a few shelves which probably used to hold the books and ship models, and what appears to be a the jawbone of a large shark mounted on the wall.

Getting a good look at the pages now, she sees that it does appear to be the ship's log and previous navigation notes, though several of the pages have been ripped out already.

Gonna continue on with a slight bit more information about the chest.
While getting the log book was easy enough, the chest the other frozen crewman was holding was another story. It's held tight between his frozen arms and torso, so opening or removing the chest would require either breaking the box, or the frozen corpse itself.

Looking closely, you can see one of the pieces of metal from the exploded doorknob embedded in the side of the chest.
OOC:
Since it's just the three of them there at the moment, they'll need to decide what to try to take from the ship. The Ship's Log has been gotten by Byron - the chest, cannon, and/or gunpowder remains. When your characters are ready to head back to the Symphony, let me know!

Bonepipe remedies that with a swift axe-kick on the chest. The wooden chest, not the corpse's chest, though those two things are stuck together so maybe it doesn't matter.

Teo respons to Byron from the other room, still doing his best to avoid coming too close to her. "Me neither. I would make sure to not touch anything in here with your skin directly, including that book and chest. The Woe is strong here. As useful as the things here might be, I worry we are bringing sickness back with us."

Teo walks towards the hatch leading back up out of the ship, signaling that he is ready to go whenever the other two are.
Jan 25, 2022 12:32 am
"Think I don’t know that?" she mutters performatively for Bonepipe to hear but at a volume too low for Teo to catch it.

Nevertheless, she does inch a bit further from the rest of the party as she considers the cannon. And there is a lot to consider: weight, firepower, usefulness…

She errs on the side of leaving it alone, though, as the harpoon and the elf-orca did most of the heavy lifting. No reason to risk this thing plunging into the depths and kicking up floes of Frigid Woe.

Byron returns to the ship, leaving the barbarian to deal with the aftermath of his attack on the chest.

When Teo emerges to the top deck of the ship, the red bird is waiting for him, perched on the ships railing. The bird regards Teo with solemn black eyes, fathomless in their depths. It opens its beak, and a shrill note rings out, a discordant sounds that yet seems to make sense to the druid.

[Corruption. A dark mockery of nature. You must bring an end to it, or it will bring an end to us all.]

Byron begins heading up right after Teo, not waiting to see the results of Bonepipe's epic axe-kick - though she does hear it. The sound of breaking wood and... glass?

As Bonepipe's spiked boot splits easily though the chest, he notices too late the glass vials of glistening crystal stone within - that, and the ice, almost a living thing, lashing out in great furious spikes from where the chest used to be.
OOC:
Bonepipe, roll Defy Danger to avoid getting spiked by this very suspicious ice.
The red-bird flies away without another word, and as Teo and Byron go over to the RAFT OF CHAMPINS to prepare to head back, they notice it has a new occupant. A large octopus has made a very comfortable nest out of the blankets and furs that lined the inside of the rowboat. It reaches out with one orange tentacles, and loosens the knot tying the small boat to the ship.
OOC:
He's that complication we were all waiting for. Did you guess an octopus got stuck to the bottom of your boat and decided to move in?Because, if so, you are very good at guessing things.

As Teo and Byron spot the octopus untying the boat and trying to set off for new adventures on its own, Teo chuckles and smiles. "Looks like we have a stowaway, a brand new champin." Without explaining anything further, he gets down on all fours next to Byron before his form poofs into a cloud of mist, and when a chill breeze blows it away, suddenly a large brown bear with little antlers stands next to Byron.

Beor smiles and grunts at Byron before standing on his hind two legs, then letting out a fearsome roar and bearing his teeth towards the octopus, trying to scare it off.

As Mance waits for the away team to complete their exploration of the wreck his patience grows thin. The Frigid Depths between Eiselcross and the main land are not the sort of waters in which you want to loiter. The weather is volatile and can change to blizzard conditions without much warning.

The captain strolls over to the opposite side of the deck to look back across the waters looking for signs of storm clouds and other omens. He contemplates whether to sail back out into the strait before heading north on their original course or following the coastline to Syrinlya. As he contemplates his restless hands pick-up one of his dreadlocks. He absentmindedly blows out the flame on its tip and then re-lights it and then blows it out again and re-lights it, repeating this over and over in a meditative trance as his eyes scan the horizon, the smoke of the blown out flame shows him the direction of the wind, the flicker of the re-lit flame showing gusts.

The sound of cracking ice and splashing, gurgling water pulls Mance out of his contemplation and he rushes back over to the other side of the ship to see the wreckage beginning to slide into the frozen depths.

He sees Byron and a bear on deck trying to get into the RAFT OF CHAMPINS but can't see Bonepipe anywhere. Mance feels the main refrain from the new concerto raising in his head, so he rushes to the flame-organ to let it out hoping to motivate his companions in their escape.

Bonepipe barely feels the pain in his foot as he charges up to the deck to see Byron and Bearteo waiting for him before the RAFT OF CHAMPINS. It's just as he reaches the deck that the ice beneath the Flying Remorhaz finally breaks and the whole ship begins to slide into the ocean, crashing into the water with a massive wave.
OOC:
The three of them can get into the raft (if they want) without a roll, but getting back to the Symphony will take a Defy Danger roll. The goal is to get back to the ship without getting thrown into the ocean or drowned by the massive wave the sinking ship is kicking up. I'll accept any Defy Danger roll, so long as it's justified by your actions.
Meanwhile, back on the Symphony, Mance is beginning to get a bad feeling about the clouds gathering in the sky, as he maps the wind direction and pressure. The wind was in the right direction, at least, but if they didn't get going - and soon - the wind direction wouldn't matter. The ocean would be too covered in ice to sail properly.
OOC:
What is about to happen? There's a blizzard coming! On the bright side, it will make a trip to Syrinlya faster (assuming we're still headed there), but on the downside it seems like sailing might be difficult after it hits if they don't have a way to get through the ice.
Once he's certain of the weather, Mance quickly starts up the chorus of Bonepipe's concerto on the flame-organ, hoping to spur them along.

Mance sighs with relief as he sees all three of his companions jump into the RAFT OF CHAMPINS before the wreck breaks apart and sinks. They aren't out of danger yet, looking at the triggered waves, but Mance can't do more from here. Instead, he needs to make sure the ship is ready to leave as soon as they return.

"PREPARE TO SAIL!"
Mance commands causing the crew to jump to action.

"Kyvar!" Mance waves to the ice specialist to join him for a moment. The rugged sea elf was responsible for keeping the ice chimes carved for optimal tone as well as maintaining the ship's ice breaker. "I don't like the look of those storm clouds. I think we might have a blizzard bearing down on us. I want you to sharpen and reinforce the ice breaker as best you can, I expect thicker ice and more frequent icebergs than we're used to for the rest of the journey to Syrinlya."

"Aye Aye Captain," he says grabbing his tools and diving overboard without delay. How Kyvar tolerated the freezing water still amazed Mance even though the constitution of sea elves in cold water was widely known.
OOC:
I think this is sort of a combination between Aid and Bolster. The idea is to give the ship a +1 forward dealing with ice hazards during the next leg of the journey. Since it's been over 24 hours, I'm going to get the compulsory rolls out of the way. We'll say Bonepipe uses STR to hold onto the boat while Byron rows, and Teo uses WIS from his experience in this region to help maneuver the raft away from the sea ice.
OOC:
Edit: maybe not necessarily a 'worse outcome', but I think it would make sense in this scenario with 3 complications, but no failures.
Bonepipe leaps onto the raft, just as the other two take off - Byron rowing with all of her might toward the Symphony, while Teobear uses their weight to help evade the waves and ice.

The wave caused by the displacement of water when the Remorhaz crashed into the ocean lifts the entire raft up - sending them careening toward the much larger Symphony.

The RAFT OF CHAMPINS is thrashed against the metal sides of the Symphony, the hull of the rowboat shattering - though all three of the adventurers are thrown safely onto the deck. They've made it... but this is the end for the RAFT OF CHAMPINS, as the remains of it and the warm next of blankets and fur that were put within it, are washed away by the Frigid Depths.
OOC:
Mance also gets a +1 to that roll because of Discern Realities I think? The Symphony will definitely get a +1 to ice related Defy Dangers.
Finally, with everyone back on the Symphony, they are ready to set sail once again. Kyvar, the sea elf, returns from the sea, after reinforcing the ice breaker and gives the crew the all-clear.

Byron stands up and brushes herself off. She shudders a little against the cold.

"Oh, right. I actually haven’t checked it yet."

Logs are for captains, she reasons, and hands it over to Mance for a look.

In the meantime she heads to the furnaces to stoke the flames—the party is likely to need all the power it can get to outrun the encroaching blizzard.
Jan 28, 2022 5:42 pm
Once back on the deck of the Symphony, Beor shakes his thick bear hide to get water and the chill of the arctic off him, and when he finishes shaking he is back in his normal elven form. However, still paranoid that he might have contracted the Woe, he remains far away from everyone.

(I can't remember if Teo has already told everyone about his village having the Woe, but I'll just assume he did)
"Good job everyone. That... was the crew I purchased the tainted goods from. Looks like the Woe thanked them for spreading it by taking them too. The bird brought us here to witness that the Woe is still spreading, and it's not afraid to claim even its most loyal superspreaders. It wanted to keep us focused."

He looks to Mance, I'm sorry about the Raft of Champins. I'm still feeling fine, but don't want to take any unnecessary risks. I will be in the crow's nest keeping a lookout, if you need me." He takes off into the sky, then perches in the crow's nest.

He takes a few moments to look behind the ship where the wreckage was, before he hears the faint whistle of a tea kettle and a crotchety old voice, "Ah, quit your mopin'. You're doing fine."

Teo smiles, thinks, "You've been quiet, have you been busy on that side?"

"Oh yeah, got every afternoon just absolutely booked with dates with the finest dead bachelors and bachelorettes. Heh, nah, I'm just kidding. I'm still here, you just haven't needed me."

"Impossible, I wouldn't've even gotten on this ship if it weren't for you. Affecting destiny even from beyond the ashes, you didn't have anything to do with that bird, did you? "

There is no response to his question, just the feeling on the wind of an old smile, enjoying some tea.

The Symphony makes excellent time sailing along the coast to Syrinlya, and the snow has only just begun to fall by the time they see the settlement's docks just a few hours after mid-day (on the 2nd day of their journey). The remainder of the trip was, thankfully, peaceful, but increasingly cold as the weather turned icy.

From the docks, the group can see that Syrinlya is a humble settlement, shrouded in snow - through the layers of white, the group can see dozens of fur-lined yurts arranged in a large camp, and various bonfires whipped about by the wind. From the size of the settlement, it appears that no more than 200 - likely less - people live here for any stretch of time. However, it's not a ghost town by any means, with several dwarves, elves, and humans all up and active this morning, clearing what appeared to be a good two feet of snowfall.

Mance shares the map and locations of the stops made by the Flying Remorhaz with his companions as well as the interesting journal entry. He's particularly surprised by the fact it seems like the ship sailed along the lava flows and asks Byron if she has any experience traveling along lava given her relationship with fire. He plans to inquire about traveling along the lava flow in Syrinlya.

During the final leg of their trip up the coast to Syrinlya, Mance reveals to Bonepipe that he has finished the Flaming Bagpipe Concerto. He knows Bonepipe's style is improvisational (OOC: I'm taking an educated guess there, but seems like Bonepipe's style). The piece is really just an melodic background to allow Bonepipe to shine during his impressive solo.

He has visited Syrinlya on tour numerous times and always arrives in the harbor with a performance, so suggests they perform the flaming bagpipe concerto this time hoping it will help take the barbarian's mind off his ice-spiked foot injury. As he conducts the music, he looks out over Syrinlya at the reaction from the inhabitants and any differences since last time he was here (OOC: A Port in the Storm).

"Sorry, Captain, no such luck," Byron says. "In fact, we made it a point to move somewhere more temperate after my great-uncle Valtra drowned in a volcano…"

She looks grim for a moment but can’t maintain it—a goofy smile blossoms across her face.

"I’m just pulling your leg, Mance, Valtra lives in Whitestone and sends me little trinkets he buys from the markets every year for my birthday. As for lava, no real experience. I’m game to explore it someday though—can’t be worse than the Frigid Woe-stricken cold."
Jan 31, 2022 6:26 pm
A look of horror widens Mance's eyes at the mention of drowning in a volcano ... Did Byron and his relatives regularly swim in lava??? ... until Byron reveals it's just a joke.

"Yes, lava vs the Woe, neither sounds like a good way to go, but it would be interesting to sail along a lava flow if it was possible," Mance agrees with a look of adventure on his face.

Thinking about the Woe again, he remembers the description of the strange ice that suddenly spread throughout the wreckage and triggered it to sink.

"What do we think that weird spreading ice on the wreck was? Is it related to the Woe, a variant, or a physical manifestation of the Woe that doesn't need a host to spread? Or is it unrelated, just a strange danger native to Eiselcross?"
Jan 31, 2022 7:35 pm
She ponders the question for a moment, idly taking a step back from the captain—just in case she’s caught something. But she’d feel it, wouldn’t she…?

"I couldn’t say," Byron says finally. "I’m leaning toward ‘strange local danger’, but that could be wishful thinking…" She wracks her mind for an answer that’s a little more satisfying.

Far cheerier faces greet the Symphony of Ice and Fire as it sails in than had come out at Nohme. With the fire organ in full swing, Bonepipe takes main stage as the Flaming Bagpipe Concerto draws a huge crowd.

Mance has seen Syrinlya grow considerably over the years - from a temporary-turned-permanent camp for the scholar and explorer Professor Gulrim Shalebrow, to a miniature outpost consisting of only the hardiest of artic expeditioners. Then, with the discovery of some ancient magical artifacts - giving rise to the theory that Eiselcross was once the home to an ancient magical civilization - the sudden boom in population, with adventurers, merchants and crafters all coming to make their living on this newest - if extremely hazardous - frontier.

Mance tries to pick out some faces among the crowd, and notices a few - but notably missing is Prof. Shalebrow himself, and The Buyer - both founders of the settlement that was now the size of a small village. Having been founded by a dwarf and elf, respectively, most of the population takes on that demographic, with only a few humans or other races scattered among them.

Interestingly, it seemed that a lot of the explorer-types Mance was used to seeing in town weren't here - with only a few of the dozens of people cheering from the shoreline anything but common shopkeeps and craftsmen.

Morgo Delwur
As the Flaming Bagpipe Concerto comes to a close, one of the cheering voices raises above the others in a joyous whoooop! "Now that's what I call an entrance! Fashionably late, and full of style!"

A young female dwarf with a long, shaggy mane of brown hair stands atop one of the rail posts on the pier and gives a theatrical bow. Mance recalls her having been a fresh-faced explorer not too long ago, and one of Prof. Shalebrow's aides - Morgo Delwer. "Welcome to our tropical island paradise. I'll be your guide, once you've settled your encore!"

Hoping down onto the docks, "Thank you, thank you," he waves to the crowd and then to Morgo, "Thank you, yes, we will be happy to have a guide ... Madame Delwar was it? How goes your explorations of Eiselcross? Any new finds?"

Once the pleasantries are out of the way Mance asks in a quieter more serious tone, "I was hoping to speak with Prof. Shalebrow. We actually come bearing sad news and as a result with important business to tend to. Could you show us where he's residing these days? Perhaps you could join the meeting as well, your experience exploring Eiselcross could be valuable to our mission."

Morgo beams at having been remembered by Mance. "As well as can be expected out here - I've found more frostbite than artifacts, but I can't complain. It's the joy of being out here on the edge of the world, seeing sights rarer than any gem or relic."

As Mance's request to speak with the professor, Morgo shakes her head. "That's the part that's got us the most tied up. Thing is, this whole situation with the Woe caught us at a bad time." She explains. "There was a fresh lead on some old relics that came in about 2 weeks ago, and most of the expeditioners have gone off in search of it - with the Prof at the head of it. The rest of us are just enough to hold down the ol' fort in the meantime - and then something like this happens. If we weren't spread thin as it was, we would've sent a party out ourselves."

She sighs. "The Buyer is next in charge, but y'know they're not exactly the leading type. Bit of an odd one, that elf, but they've been around as long as Shalebrow, so we've all gotten used to it. They're actually the one who asked me to come out and wait on ye. Said they got a message about your mission and that you might be needing supplies?"
Feb 3, 2022 7:42 am
"Just enough to hold down the fort?" Mance looks around in surprise. "I remember when this place held half this many people at max capacity. You are growing well," he adds with an impressed smile.

Morgo laughs heartily in agreement, "Yes, I know - I can hardly believe it myself sometimes! But, it's because we've grown so much that we've had to become more protective of our base. Used to be that if you were out here you were a seasoned explorer and adventurer in your own right and could handle yourself. The whole camp could up and move if they needed to. Now we have merchants, craftspeople - rust, we've got families with kids set up here."

When Mance asks about supplies, Morgo grins. "The Buyer has some options prepared - careful though, they can be a bit stingy. They're a bit of a penny-pincher, which works out for us most of the time. As for the route - if I was going, I'd head around the mountains. Takes longer, sure, but it's much safer. Last group went right through, and who knows what happened to them?"

She glances back at the Symphony. "There may be another route by sea - I'm no sailor though. I'd be happy to let you know what I do about the areas I've been to though. In the meantime, though, I think it's best if we get out of this cold. Y'all want to head to the Buyer now, or did you want anything to eat?"
OOC:
Since it's been a few days, I'm gonna give it just a little more time, but let me know if you would like me to move the scene forward (options being to The Buyer's yurt or to the tavern).

"Safer?" Bonepipe scoffs. "Bollocks to that! We want the fun route, yeah?"
Feb 3, 2022 3:21 pm
Byron regards Bonepipe skeptically, but ultimately acquiesces.

"Before that we should get something to eat, though."
OOC:
Tavern? Tavern? We can just abstract it if no one else wants to go to the tavern.
Feb 4, 2022 3:39 am
Mance laughs at the barbarian's comment and says, "Don't worry my friend, I'm sure both ways will have plenty of fun. But we need to remember that we are here for the glory of being saviors, not the glory of death-defying danger ... at least this time." He adds the last with a wink hoping the prospect of future exertions will satisfy Bonepipe for now.

"The Buyer need not be too stingy, he will be compensated appropriately," Mance comments to Morgo briefly revealing the crest from the Diarchy from a pocket in his jacket.

Mance gives an nod of agreement to Byron's suggestion. "Perhaps we can discuss over refreshments at the tavern? It was a tough trip across the straits and we will need all the energy we can muster for the wilderness of Eiselcross," he says to Morgo.

Morgo nods her head. "Of course! You know Arl, right? Used to work as a cook in the when we were just a tiny outpost? He'd got his own place now - The Jolly Lager."

Morgo makes conversation with the group as she leads them through the small settlement, gesturing to a few of the yurts and the groups of people chatting around campfires. Eventually they come across an especially large yurt with a sign marking it The Jolly Lager.

Inside it was actually fairly warm and cozy, with a huge burning hearth in the center roasting a pot of what smelled of seasoned mutton and herbs. The hearth was surrounded by a semi-circular bar, and most of the circular tables around the room were low to the ground, with cushions set in place of chairs.

Arl Bortock, a gray-haired elder dwarf greets the group from behind the bar. "Hey! Back again I see - and with some new faces! Welcome! Liking the cold out there?"

There aren't too many patrons at this time - only those opting for an early lunch. One table hosts an old elven ranger and a scar-faced dwarven explorer, who look up silently when the two adventurers appear, only to go back to their drinks; while the other occupied table sits a family of two human commoners and two tiefling children who don't even seem to notice the visitors, engrossed in their meal and laughter.

Byron dispenses the niceties as is appropriate and sits down to eat and have a drink, but her eye keeps being drawn to the dwarven explorer and their elven companion.

"Captain," she whispers, "do you know those two? They look real competent. Like they’d eat the fun route for breakfast." She tosses Bonepipe a grin.

The two explorers Byron and Bonepipe mention glance over at the barbarian's loud exclamation. The elf almost seems ready to say something, but her dwarven companion waves her off.

Mance would know that those two were new - or at least, they weren't in the settlement any of the previous times he'd stopped by. New faces weren't anything unusual in a growing place like this, however.

In the meantime, Morgo busied herself putting the first round of the tavern's famous lager on her tab. She brings the beer back from the bar herself, five great leather tankards, full to the brim, balanced on a large tray, which breaks the groups line of sight with the two explorers on the other side of the bar.

"I know you might prefer the hot drinks, but you can't very well have you say you came to Syrinlya's Jolly Lager without having a Jolly Lager, now can you?"

Morgo places the tray down then grabs her own tankard, "Cheers!" she agrees, then takes a long swig of the beer.

The lager has a light, crisp taste that goes down smooth - it's not strong enough to get you drunk off a pint, but it's got enough alcohol to make you feel bolstered. Like it's name suggests, the delicious taste is enough to bring a smile to your face.

As the party meets and greets at the docks, Falteo takes off into the sky and begins circling the town, taking stock of its layout and defenses and how the city runs, while also keeping an eye on what the rest of the party is doing. Teo had never been this far from his village, his supply runs never forced him to go much farther than Nohme or the next town over, so he never had any reason to. But the tiny size of Syrinlya reminded him of his village. Sure, the elegant wooden homes were replaced by yurts and the trees were replaced by, well, nothing, but the compactness, the sense of community you get just from looking at it, reminded him of home.

Eventually, he notices the group enter a tavern, and as the winds pick up in the free air above the outpost town, Falteo descends into the city streets. He lands just outside the tavern, pulls a thick piece of cloth over his mouth and nose and makes sure his gloves are nice and snug, then enters the tavern and sits down at the table with the rest of the group.
OOC:
Rolling Discern Realities on his trip around the town to maybe mark some XP, rather than about what's inside the tavern, if that's okay

Hm, just 1 question about the town? Maybe what happened here recently, probably looking for signs of the Woe

"Hello, birdie!" Byron calls jovially, and waves him over.
Feb 8, 2022 2:06 am
Mance shares a drink with his companions and their host allowing the refreshing lager to loosen his body after the tense journey. Noticing Bonepipe and Byron's interest in the other patrons, he replies to Byron's inquiry, "No, I haven't seen them around before. Could be new recruits to one of the exploration teams maybe."

"Please excuse me for a moment," the captain leaves Morgo and the two shipmates to their observations to go catch-up with the old barkeep.

"Thanks Arl, that Jolly Lager always hits the spot. Yes, a couple new faces on the crew this time round."

"I came across an interesting story recently,"
Mance leans in closer, lowering his voice to build drama and draw in Arl's interest. "I heard rumors that people may be traveling along the lava flows!?!" Mance was referring to the evidence in the travel logs of the Flying Remorhaz. He looks carefully at Arl's reaction and then asks, "Have you heard any stories of such endeavors? Or know anyone I should talk to who might have more information?"
Feb 8, 2022 9:14 am
OOC:
I'm going to resolve these in the order that makes the most sense, so Teo first.
Narrator
As Falteo flies a loop around the settlement, he takes in a few interesting local tidbits. Fortunately, though some of the folks spoke of how the Woe was ravaging the mainland - some rumors true, some wildly exaggerated - it didn't seem like anyone in this town had contracted it or showed any symptoms.

More than the Woe - the thing that seems to be on most people's minds (or at least in their discussions) is the Dwendalian Empire. Teo would know that the Dwendalian Empire is an all-human nation to the west of the Greying Wildlands, and is known for being totalitarian, but not outright hostile to this region.

However, recently, Dwendalian ships have been spotted off the coast, putting the town on edge due to the fact that most of their defenders - the expedition team - left to pursue a lead on a new archeological find. Rumors and conspiracy theories travel quickly around the small settlement, and there's a growing worry that the Dwendalians leaked information about the ruins to get the expedition team to leave Syrinlya defenseless. Some even note that the Cobalt Station is run by Dwendalians - and wonder if this whole Woe nonsense is some sort of plot.

When pressed by any of the more rational settlers, however, no one can come up with a solid reason why the Empire would want to attack or invade Syrinlya in particular.
OOC:
What happened here recently? Though the group already knows that most of the expedition teams recently set out after a tip off on some ruins, the follow up to that is that Dwendalian ships have been spotted off the coast, putting the town on edge, which is the real reason Morgo and The Buyer are hesitant to send anyone from Syrinlya off to Cobalt Station to get the cure or rescue the first party.

Spout Lore might give you more info on the Dwendalian Empire if you're curious.
Then, Teo heads to the bar to regroup with the others.
The elf had looked over when Bonepipe spoke loudly about eating a dozen blokes like them before breakfast - but by the time Morgo sets down their drinks and the barbarian chugs one down, the two are back to their private discussion.

However, as Mance breaks away to go talk to the tavern owner, Bonepipe and Byron give the two strangers a good long look. Bonepipe is less subtle in his staring, and that seems to agitate the elven ranger once again.

The dwarf, for the second time, tries to pull his companion back into their quiet conversation, but she shrugs him off. "Shove off, Urgon, I'm going to see what this is about."

Elf Ranger
You don't see many older elves around - and from this ranger's silver-grey hair, braided and tied back in a red band, one might think that she's past her prime - but the look on her face would suggest otherwise. In fact, her entire demeanor would fit more on a far younger - and far more reckless-looking - person.

Her quiver, slung over her shoulder, is filled with numerous jet-black arrows.

She's tall, even for an elf, and as she walks over and looms over their table, she says directly to Bonepipe, "You got somethin' you want to say to me, little man?"

Urgon
The dwarf - Urgon - grumbles something that sounds like a dwarvish curse, and shoves something that looks like a small chest deeper down into his satchel as he stands as well, but doesn't move any closer to the group.
OOC:
What here is useful or valuable to me? There are two things Bonepipe may notice - "Urgon" is the name mentioned in the ship's log retrieved from the Flying Remorhaz, and the chest that Bonepipe just caught a glimpse of is the same kind of chest that he broke on that ship. That could, potentially, be useful.
Byron is, perhaps, a little less obvious in her staring, and is able to catch a better glimpse of the ranger in particular as she approaches.
OOC:
Along with the Urgon name and chest info, Byron also notices:

What here is not what it appears to be? The "Elven Ranger" appears to be using a Disguise to hide her true form. This does not appear to be the case for the dwarf, but the elf is not who she appears to be. She seems like she may be more of young adult, and that the Disguise ability is something Thieves are most known for. (If you'd like, you can describe how Byron knows this/figured this out!)

What should I be on the lookout for? Because of the chest, you might be on the lookout for signs of the Woe. You might also be on the look out for anything else the elf may be concealing.

OOC:
Mance might notice that his party is getting into a potential situation - but, it's up to Mance if he wants to head back or leave it to Bonepipe, Byron and Teo.
Mance, meanwhile, is over at the bar with Arl. As expected, the tavern owner looks eager for new gossip. At Mance's talk of travelling the lava flows, the dwarf nods. "You mean the Inferno? Aye, I've hear that rumor. They say the very land of these islands is magic, and the River Inferno is a part of that. Lava with no volcano - no source at all." He wipes down one of the leather tankards he has with a cloth. "But, seeing as it's magic, there's supposed to be magic ways around it. People have seen floating chunks of ice travelling down that river, if you can believe it. But, it's not any ol' ice that does the trick."

"I'm afraid I can't help ya with the details - I'm no mage. But, if you get on the Buyer's good side, he might have something to say about it. He's a wizard, you know? Or, you might not... he hardly talks about that these days."
OOC:
What will you do!

An itch on one of her ritual scars—the one on the back of her neck—tells Byron that something’s not right.

She regards the ranger curiously, but doesn’t cut in as Bonepipe makes his move.

Instead she turns to Urgon.

"‘scuse me," Byron begins, "I could’ve sworn there was something familiar about you. You a sailor by any chance?"

Arl grimaces a bit, but raises the glass in his hand in acknowledgement. To Mance he whispers, "Solo adventurers - came into town just about a day ago, and are waiting for their ride. Fella's not to bad, but that lady has a hair-trigger." Arl prepares the drinks for the two. "Trekked in from the wilds though, so can't be all talk."

Feb 11, 2022 2:33 am
Mance looks at Bonepipe with a look of incredulity ... Out of coins again? ... Of course he is ... he shakes his head with a chuckle, but since the offer has been extended to the strangers Mance decides he doesn't want to start too much trouble, so he tosses a coin to Bonepipe and returns to join the group. When he hears Bonepipe challenge the dwarf, Mance immediately regrets his decision ... Great, these things never stay civil ... but it could inspire a good drinking song, he thinks hoping for a silver lining.

Hearing Byron's taunt, Mance grows more optimistic. He catches the Firemaster's inflection on the word "Flying" and wonders what he's missed in the conversation so far and whether there's perhaps more to learn here than he initially thought.

Sitting back in his chair he sings the first verse of an well known sea shanty that is a perfect song to open a drinking challenge.

It's probably not how it's supposed to work, but it is a challenge, so that makes sense! I'll say the results of a passed "What're You Waiting For?!" move outside of combat is 1) they accept the challenge and do focus on you, and 2) they get -2 forward on all skill check opposed to you (as opposed to you getting +2 damage against them, since no damage is being dealt). So, though he would normally have a +2 for CON, because of What're You Waiting For he'll have +0. Sound fair?

Urdon stares at Byron in suspicion. Something she said definitely affected him, and he looks at her with narrowed eyes, like he's contemplating doing something... then seems to think better of it. "Let’s head out, Ava."

He’s just about to leave when Bonepipe issues his challenge.

It’s ‘Ava’ who laughs at the challenge. "You’d do better to challenge me. And, I'm not turning down free drinks, or a wager like this." She puts a gold coin on the bar. "I'm in."

Urdon scowls, clearly not wanting to stay, but unwilling to back down from the barbarian who challenged him. Silently, he puts his own coin on the bar.

Arl takes out a new barrel of lager and begins to pour.
OOC:
Let's do this as a Defy Danger (CON) move! In addition to your outcome, the # you roll is also how many tankards of beer you put away (so even if they both fail the Defy Danger, we'd hopefully still get a winner)! 6 or less you get sick right off, 7-9 you are drunk and most likely going to be hungover tomorrow, 10+ and you are the god of drinking and don't have any negative effects.
The challengers pick up their drinks as Mance begins to sing.
OOC:
Mance playing might be able to be used as an Aid move, by the way! I don't think Arcane Art would quite work, but the Aid can be flavored the same way in this case.

Taverns and bars were never really Teo's things, he was more at ease in the peaceful woods surrounded by lazy animals with dirt and mud at his feet than in a cramped building surrounded by roudy adventurers with not-even-the-gods-knows-what at his feet. While still nervous about spreading the Woe to this so-far untouched frontier town, he takes comfort in being with his companions and the fact that this place is not quite busy yet and seemingly well-kept.

Teo is pleasant towards his companions as he enters the tavern, but otherwise remains quiet through the drinking games and singing, though he does nod his head along to the shanty, then pulls his face mask closer to his nose when Bonepipe releases his crescendo. "That was lovely, Captain Mance. I'd lead you all in an elven chant or winter hymnal, but doesn't seem to fit the mood." he jokes.

She slams a hand on Urdon's back, who looks about ready to throw up. "This lightweight doesn't have that excuse, though. He's just an embarrassment." She says, laughing loudly. Urdon, shoves off her hand, then rushes in the direction of the privy.

Despite Mance's attempt to give Byron the opening she needed to get the information out of the two mysterious folk, but Morgo's slightly drunk, rambling answer to that question (something about being over-charged as a kid for a pet snow bunny that eventually ran away) ends up doing nothing to help with the mood.

Ava glares at Byron, seemingly moments from starting a fight. "I've no idea what yer talking about, lizard, but I don't like your tone."

Urdon, still somewhat green, stares at Byron for a moment, then shakes his head - again trying to call off his companion. "I've got nothing to say to you, and I don't care what lies you spread. I've got my own business to attend to. Have you had enough messing around, Ava?"

Alright, before we move on, I'm going to call for an End of Session move!

Did we learn something new and important about the world? Yes (the existence of the River Inferno and that it's possible to sail it)
Did we overcome a notable monster or enemy? Yes (Ice-Mad Catfish)
Did we loot a memorable treasure? Yes (the Flying Remorhaz' ship log)

So everyone can mark an extra 3 XP!

Now, choose one of your bonds that you feel is resolved (completely explored, no longer relevant, or otherwise). Ask the player of the character you have the bond with if they agree. If they do, mark XP and write a new bond with whomever you wish.

Once bonds have been updated look at your alignment. If you fulfilled that alignment at least once this session, mark XP.

Be sure to let me know here what you resolved to mark XP and how!
OOC:
I believe everyone should have > 8 XP after that, so you can Level Up!

When you have downtime (hours or days) and XP equal to (or greater than) your current level+7, you can reflect on your experiences and hone your skills.

- Subtract your current level+7 from your XP.
- Increase your level by 1.
- Choose a new advanced move from your class.
- If you are the wizard, you also get to add a new spell to your spellbook.
- Choose one of your stats and increase it by 1 (this may change your modifier). Changing your Constitution increases your maximum and current HP. Ability scores can’t go higher than 18.

I think this BOND, "I am writing a flaming-bagpipes concerto for Bonepipe", has resolved.

and I fulfilled my alignment (GOOD: Perform your art to aid someone else) using the flaming organ to warm up Bonepipe to help him deal with the cold condition after diving in the Frigid Depths as well as to singing the Shanty to cheer him on during the drinking game.

So that's 4 XP from failures + 3 XP from the group goals + 1 XP for the BOND and 1 XP for alignment = 9 XP.

So I'll spend 8 to level up!

I'll look over the new moves and adjust my character sheet in the morning.

Great play everyone! That was a fun first session!

Bonds:

"Mance shares my hunger for glory; the earth will tremble at our passing!"
With the Mance's completion of the Bagpipe Concerto and Bonepipe performing it for the first time, the earth has begun to rumble at our passing. But fame as a musician is only half of it; there is glory in battle still to be gained! 1 XP

"Teo's ways are strange and confusing."
Bonepipe is starting to gain an understanding and appreciation for Teo's ways. He is still mystified by the shapeshifting but he wants to learn more. Because a concert with eagles and stuff would be so bitchin'! Bond rewritten, and 1 XP marked.

I don't think I've made any progress yet with regards the Bond with Byron. Gotta work on that.

Alignment:
Eschew a convention of the civilized world. Throwing harpoons instead of using the harpoon gun? Favoring the "fun route" through the mountains? 1 XP.

So that's 1 XP from Outsider + 1 XP from the one failed roll, + 3 XP from the group goals + 2 XP for Bonds + 1 XP for Alignment = 8 XP

I'm increasing STR to 17 (unchanged modifier) and choosing Smash! as my first advanced move.

I actually toyed with the idea of using Appetite For Destruction to gain Metal Hurlant from the Bard moves because dang, it fits Bonepipe so well, but I don't want to step on Mance's toes!

Got for it! If not this time then next time. I don't think I'll take that move for Mance and I agree, it fits Bonepipe perfectly!

I'm going to take "A little help from my friends" to get a buff for myself whenever I aid someone.

I'm going to bump my Constitution from 15 to 16, which bumps my CON from +1 to +2. That also increases my HP.

I'm still thinking about a new bond. I think it'll be for Byron. If you have any ideas @akorn, let me know.

Awesome!

I'll go ahead and give it another day for Teo @aquafina and Byron @akorn to do their levels before starting on the next Act. I'm excited to see how this group progresses!

If you have any questions about leveling or what counts towards XP, you can ask me here or in PM!

Bonds
The spirits spoke to me of a great danger that follows BONEPIPE.
--I don't think this one has really been explored yet

I have shown MANCE a secret rite of the Land.
--I'm not sure if this one has been completed. This happened in the past, but hasn't really been brought up in-game.

BYRA does not understand life in the wild, so I will teach them.'
--This one has been brought up before, but I don't think it's fully matured yet, and I expect it might come up more as we travel inland into the tundra perhaps.

Alignment

Good: Help something or someone grow.
--I also can't really think of an instance of this playing out, so I don't think i can mark this one.

XP Total: 2 (from failed checks) + 3 (from GM move questions) + 1? (from maybe Mance's Bond?) = 6

I do think the Bond needs to be resolved in-game, so Teo should have 5 XP total, so you'll need 3 more to Level Up - I think you can Level up whenever you get the XP for it. Byron will still need to do the End of Session questions, but since it's been over 24 hours, I'm going to push forward a little bit.

Chalrytharendir made a good point that it will be easier to manage things if I made a new thread for Act 2, so here it is: https://gamersplane.com/forums/thread/24339/?p=1131767#p1131767

Three XP brings me up to 7, but I actually don’t know if I can confidently say I’ve fulfilled any bonds or lived up to my alignment? Byron has certainly made gestures in all those directions, but unless one or all of you argue otherwise I don’t think she’s cleanly leveled up yet.

No worries! Both Byron and Teo are pretty close (you all were just too lucky with your rolls!), and I think will probably get to Level 2 before heading out! Everyone can head over to the Act 2 thread to get started with the Buyer.
