Gellbran is a strong, well rounded individual who thinks with his head...most of the time. Although being a half-orc, Gellbran is barely distinguishable from a human, other than his larger stature and his slightly greyish pigmentation. He's lived his life whole around human civilization, and has only ever known one orc, his father.
Gellbran's father, Gell of the Black Borns was a well renowned fighter who was relentless in battle and showed no mercy to anyone who was unlucky enough to cross his path, until he came across a young human farm hand one day while raiding a farm outside of Amphail. This young farm hand had single handedly taken down three orc warriors using only a pitchfork, a feat which no ordinary farm hand could do. This caught Gell's eye, and when she was subdued and sentenced to execution, Gell could not allow that. Instead, he threw the young farm hand on his shoulder and made a dash for his horse, cutting down any orc that stood in his way. The two managed to escape and took refuge in the woods.
The farm hand introduced herself to Gell, she was called Lor. Lor knew that Gell had saved her life and sensed something different with him, but she had a strong hatred for orcs and couldn't quite bring herself to trust him. Through many nights, their situation worsened, lacking food and water, and building makeshift shelters to keep themselves warm. Knowing that all they had at this point was each other, they grew close, holding on to whatever hope they could. As they reached the edge of the woods, Lor noticed a familiar looking village just over the hilltops in the distance. It was the village she grew up in. She suggested they take refuge on her father Bran's farm. When they got there, they found out Bran had passed just weeks before their arrival, however having no children other than Lor, his property was placed in her name. Gell and Lor settled down and ended up having a son, Gellbran.
Gellbran looked much like his mother, with dark hair and green eyes, and was easily passable as human growing up. This allowed him entry into the nearby city of Waterdeep, although Gell was not. This forced Gell to work as a treasure hunter in order to help sustain Gellbran and Lor on the farm. One day, while returning from a trip to the city, Gellbran and Lor were stricken with panic, as they saw their farm had been set ablaze. Through the smoke they saw Gell on his knees, defenseless as an orc clan was surrounding him. The largest of the orcs pulled out an axe and with one blow, he removed Gell's head from his shoulders.
Having lost their home and leader of their house, Gell and Lor were forced to take refuge inside the city walls. Lor had no skills other than her farming knowledge, so Gellbran was forced to enlist in the army, despite his young age of 12. Being a half-orc however, he was mature both physically and mentally compared to humans his age, and was also quite larger than any other recruit. He became the toughest infantryman of the army, in the frontlines of every battle he was ever a part of. During battle, his orc side truly showed. Gellbran was normally a calm and collected individual, but once the bloodshed started, something started to manifest inside his heart, and he could not stop until everyone who stood in his path had fallen. This made him hard to control, and his commanding officers were always reluctant to send him out unless they knew there could be no peaceful end.
During his first and only scouting mission, Gellbran was sent with four other soldiers to scan the surrounding area of the city because there was talk of an orc clan planning an attack in the near future. Due to Gellbran's chaotic nature, he was not normally sent on scouting missions, however, the savage nature of orcs scared most of the other soldiers and they lacked the necessary men for the mission. Upon spotting the orc camp, a familiar sight caught Gellbran's eye, it was the orc who slayed his father, out there alone, sharpening his axe. Fire stared burning in Gellbran's eyes and without hesitation, he ran full speed and without having time to react, the orc was split in two, right through his axe. Gellbran had swung his axe down so powerfully that the orc's blade shattered, and so did his spine. Gellbran took a piece of the broken axe and carved out the orc's still beating heart, keeping both as souvenirs. Once he emerged out of his savage state, he looked back to see the four men he was sent with butchered before him. Fighting his way through the orc camp, he was barely able to escape, but was horribly wounded because of it.
Returning to the city to seek medical attention, news of what he had done had circulated through his army. After recovering from his injuries, he was discharged from the army and banished from the city, having been blamed for the deaths of the four soldiers from his scouting mission. Gellbran was forced to leave his mother behind, but he knew that she could not provide for herself, so he had to now follow in his father's footsteps, and travel to Everspring to become a treasure hunter.
