Esal thought for a while listening to the noises. "My only thought to add here is that we are hunting orcs are we not, and that commotion could be made by one or two orcs."
Apr 10, 2022 11:10 am
Esal has a valid point, besides I prefer skunk over the dead body smell. I still can't get rid of that feeling I am still smell them...
OOC:
By the way what is approximate size of this copse of trees? Is it hundreds or thousands of foots? How dense it is - does it have 30 foot visibility range inside?
At a limited distance I could try to detect animals or orcs even without spotting them.
Claudius takes hunting trap into his hands and tries to approach copse (planing to set it up on the edge of copse and hide it.).

This particular copse is maybe 150 feet across at the widest point. Density wise, you can easily see about 30 feet into the copse from the edge before the placement of the trees makes it difficult to spot much else. You do see some boulders in the copse, as well as a few scattered around the landscape you've been walking through. The largest are as tall as Milaki, but most aren't quite so tall.

Claudius, you don't detect anything with your spell as you get close to the edge of the trees. The sounds seem to be coming from the southeast area of the copse. As you're placing your trap, a pack of birds suddenly fly into the air about 120 feet from your position.

Esal followed Claudius and when the birds flew into the air he looked intently in that direction to see if he could determine what had caused the disturbance

OOC:
I know this is not smart for the low dex, low AC PC to lead this, but since none else is willing my PC is going in.
He don't want believe this party scared of a lone creature in the forest, though he is
Claudius sends telephatic note to Esal I'm going in. Beware of my trap. I will deploy another one some 50 feet further. He covers the trap with some specially looking branch to be able to spot it if he will need to run away from the possible Orc. Then he pick last of his hunting traps and moves further into the direction of the sound, still concentrating on his mind reading spell. Unless something happens he will deploy the second trap 50 feet further and continue toward sound source until he could either understand who is making the sound, spot him or trigger anything bad happening.
OOC:
Probably need either a stealth, perception or both rolls, so rolling both just in case

Whisper back: Looking for Orcs. You?
He stops and switches to telephatic conversation to be able to explain himself
If you hear that noise - perhaps you could try to go check if that is an orc. Whoever it is the creature don't seem to care to not to be spotted. It could as well be a boar, bear or something. But if it is an Orc we do want him down, don't we?
Apr 12, 2022 2:42 pm
Esal, you can't for sure say what is causing the disturbance, but you are fairly confident it's whatever is making all the noise that caused the issue.

Milaki and Claudius, as you advance into the woods, you see that the canopy isn't fully formed overhead and the copse has several areas where you can easily see the sky. The trees themselves do seem to thin out a little bit once you're inside the woods, they are just placed very well to form a "fence" of sorts to stop people seeing into the grove.

As you get about to the end of your 50 foot hike inside Claudius, you suddenly pick up the presence of four distinct creatures' thoughts, though you can't quite detect the surface thoughts themselves yet, not until you focus on one of the creatures in particular.
OOC:
Mechanically, how I'm handling the Detect Thoughts is this:

Because they are currently unseen, you are using the portion of the spell to find unseen creatures. Based on the "once you detect the presence of a creature in this way" portion and the fact that all other features of Detect Thoughts requires you to target a single creature, it will be your next "turn" that you pick a "thought signature" to focus on. It will take your action to use any of the features of the spell, which will prevent you from setting up the trap in that moment. I'm not putting us precisely in intiative yet, but doing a semi-initiative kind of approach until initiative precision is required.

For the purposes of your thought signature stuff, you can target:

Creature A
Creature B
Creature C
Creature D

Milaki continues in stealth to look around, if she sees an orc, she will just go back to tell them
Apr 12, 2022 7:58 pm
Claudius halt and concentrate on last creature he sensed, i.e. Creature D, he will not risk setting up trap afraid of giving up his presence that way.
Apr 12, 2022 8:19 pm
Allan follows the two, he catches up with Claudius, keeping close to the trees in case he needs to hide ... oh... I have a bad feeling about this...

Esal followed Allan, arrow at the ready , to support Claudius. He felt a bit guilty that he had suggested going in looking for orcs but he was ready to do what he could to defend the team.

Claudius, you pick up thoughts about Lurzook needing to be shown that this works. And that working the arms is critical.

Milaki, as you creep forward, you see a pair of large creatures stumbling through the trees, each carrying a large axe. They look how you've always heard orcs described, but somewhat different. You can't quite figure out what's wrong though.
Apr 14, 2022 8:16 pm
Milaki returns and whispers back to them : " There are some ugly faces creatures stumbling through the trees, each carrying a large axe. We should be sneaky and I will stab them on their back, as they wait to attack us"

Alan nods and goes further, climbing a tree to see them clearer and picking a nice thick branch to ambush them from if needed.

alright... At least i will be the one ambushing them..he attempts to calm his nerves not liking the situation.

Four of them. retreat. Claudius sends thekepatical message to everyone he could see and start moving back
Apr 15, 2022 6:58 am
Esal is a bit unsure of his next move "Of the two creatures you saw Milaki you can back stab one of them, hopefully I can also attack with an arrow before they see us, do you think I should aim for the same one or the other one?"

As you talk, you hear the creatures moving through the woods getting closer to you. After about 30 seconds you can sort of see one of them through the trees. Like Milaki described they are large, standing just over two meters tall. Their faces are ugly and somewhat misshapen and they are lugging around a large axe each.

You all figure you have about another 30 seconds before they are actually at your position, though that may happen faster if they notice you. So far, they don't seem to have figured out that you are there.

Claudius, you still sense the four separate throught patterns but only see the two creatures. Do you want to change focus and check the surface thoughts of any of the other creatures?
OOC:
You have about 30 seconds to take actions and do any prep before initiative will happen. You can choose to retreat and try avoiding combat or you can set an ambush and make it happen faster. Given that you've all succesfully been hiding so far, if you set up an ambush the enemy will start off Surprised.

Setting up an ambush up in the tree.
Apr 15, 2022 11:57 am
"Let's not retreat Claudius... they might be orcs! let's kill them. Esal hit the same one I attack, so they will die faster." Milaki preparing to sneak attack one of them from behind, if possible.
