Time to get to work

You have been briefed by the leaders of Lords Alliance and their seer. Your job, that you have accepted, is to go down into this vault and make sure that the vast amount of gold gets recovered.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EmLFcIwU8AA3Jj0.png

You stand in front of a huge vault door that has already been opened. It has been opened enough for a normal-sized person to go through.
Just inside the door is a vast chamber. Three age-worn columns support crumbling stone bridges 60 feet overhead, with the ceiling rising another 20 feet beyond that.
Set into alcoves are twelve 13 sets of double doors made of iron. Each door is 10 feet wide, 10 feet high, and embossed with images of dwarf warriors in plate armor.

Shall we? it is a surprisingly how an old man could stand in a full plate armour. It should be some magic that help him bear the wight. He hold his huge shield in one hand and helmet in the other. A flail at his bel has two spiked balls slightly swinging even when he stand still.

Gray beard moves as he is breathing slow and deep, seldom coughing. It is obvious he have been a strongman during his best years. Years have taken away his strength, but not the spirit. He moves slowly but convincingly, those close to him feel confident by his calm determination.

"Of course." mumbles Melang, gingerly entering the big room, while his snout and whiskers scan the hall. Somewhere around here, there have to be the adventurers that came before them. All right? So where are they?

The Haregon, as tall as a human, is the close second to step into the deserted-looking room with his typical springy steps and looks around. His face features some deep furrows, which are quickly recognized as well-healed scars. His grey-blue fur grants him a special appearance. A simple, well worn, dark cloak, now back over his shoulders, hides some of the gear he had taken on this adventure.

The wizardy fighter, which walks on two legs, doesn't seem to need armor or anything like that. Otherwise, only a longbow can be seen on his back at the moment. However, his comrades know that he cast a small protective spell on himself before entering the room and that a summoned weapon is never far away for Melang.

"Come out, come out - wherever you are." he calls into the room in an eerie voice.

A small owl, flies into the room and flutters up, to get a better look.

Seems nobody is wasting time. Refreshing. Better get to it, then.
"Greetings" the delicate woman says with a rolling R that marks her as a foreigner to these lands.
She falls in with the oldtimer and the furry, her close proximity underlining how small she is compared to the men.
The young woman wears black on black, even the studs and spikes on her armor seem to eminate darkness. In stark contrast, her hair is white and her eyes are light blue. Neither hair nor eyes shine brightly, though. Everything about her appearance seems dark, suited for shadow rather than light.

"Wait, boys. Before we throw ourselves down this path, let me show you these." Rervenn produces a dangerous looking rapier, an impressive looking shield with the symbol of an eye, as well as a tall wodden staff with snake carvings decorating the middle. "...Won... these in a card game yesterday. Thought you might find use for them." Shield and staff she leans to the wall in front of the massive door. The rapier she holds out to the Haregon. "Consider this payment, Melang. We're even." Rervenn grins. An unsetteling sight. She might have tried to sell or exchange the items for something she herself could use, but in truth, Rervenn's night has been short and now there isn't enough time to seek out market or fence.

Melangs eyes glaze over for a few seconds, while his lips smack audibly before his gaze gets clear again. "Up there are six more openings. Every two are linked by a bridge." He points to the pillars that disappear into the darkness, before the furry warrior causes the light of his lantern illuminate what he describes." All of the bridges appear to have taken some damage. The one in the middle is shattered." Now he allows the light of his lantern shine on the rubble on the ground right in front of them. "But there seem to be some gear and a rope over the casme." Craning his neck, the small black eyes wander around the hall and the celling to maybe spot something useful or even dangerous.

When he is suddenly approached by Rervenn, his long, jutting ears turn instantly in her direction before the young man looks at her and takes the offered weapon, completely surprised and then looks at her closely. "Good win." he smiles broadly after a few heartbeats at her. "Should just be enough for us to be barely even." he teases the pale elf girl. Then he puts the rapier sheathed in one sling of his swordbelt.

Recalling something, he informs the others "Yesterday I took the last coins and these shoes from a shady looking guy. He said you can fly with them." The Harengon holds up a pair of elegant boots. "Therefore if someone has a use for them..." Melang offers his bounty to his friends.

While the group talks standing in the entrance, the little owl flies over to the gear and takes a closer look and describes the Harengon what she finds.

Zankas finds himself humming an old song about an ancient dwarven explorer driven mad by his lust for gold. The comforting weight of his simple rapier at his side and the well-made leathers he wore helped put his mind at ease.

Maybe this helps us see a bit better. Sulfurae! he says, sliding his rapier out of its sheathe, brilliant flames springling to life as they lick down the length of the blade, sending a pool of light some eighty feet around him.

While we are in a sharing mood, I had some students that brought some magical things in, hoping for extra credit. Rervenn can't help but flinch at the knight's first few steps. She reminds herself of her company's talents and uses, takes a breath and slinks inside behind them. She wants to try to stick to what's left of the shadows as is her nature - but there aren't any left. So the archer stays out of the spotlight as well as she can.

Rather than following light and noise in the direction of the centre of the hall, the pale elf focuses on the edges and starts to explore along the southwestern corner. She doesn't forget to mind the second floor and tries to see something useful while changing her position. Rervenn stays close enough to the others so she can be of assistance when the first signs of trouble show and won't be an easy target like Melang's pitiful bird.

Rervenn gets close to a steel door, that carries all the accessories of handle and keyholes. The Dark Knight moves in intervals giving you the chance to listen in between metal on metal and metal on stone action.

Except for a few spiders and perhaps a rat, you don't see any other life or movement at the moment.

Jan 18, 2022 7:54 am

Staying close by the dark knights side, the haregon keeps his glamour up for the next hour. If there is something invisible around, he has a good chance to see it. "Maybe, we want to go up and look what there can be found?" Melang suggests to the others. So many doors? This stinks of traps. Still with the feeling of beeing watched, the fighter itches to see what they are up against.

Go up? If you see that way I could assist. The Dark Knight whistle quietly and in a moment Griffon appears through the doors we all came through. You previously saw that griffon - it is Dark Knight's mount. Griffon come to Dark Knight, get down to help Dark Knight mount it stand up but don't hurry to fly just yet.
The Dark Knight continues But aren't we tasked to go down instead? Should the dark forces approach us from the ceiling I will be able to reach them. Meanwhile -
anyone could guess which doors the previous party took? Let's check if any doors are open - I can't see the end of the chamber, maybe there are the open doors?

The Dark Knight orders his mount to walk through the chamber (North) and would stop if he see any doors open or any sign of any doors been opened lately. This time at normal speed (30 foot walking speed of my mount).
Jan 19, 2022 7:32 am
Rervenn proceeds to check out her side of the room as well and inspects the second door in a similar fashion. Locked again? "After securing the ground level, I'd like to see what ate the flying mongrel, first. If there are hostile creatures above, let's deal with them now and see what exactly our permanently indisposed predecessors did up there." Melang has mentioned some gear and rope, who knows what else they might find.

After a peek through the second keyhole, Rervenn goes further north keeping up with the knight and the others.

Looking in the direction of Rervenn, he glances back at the Dark Knigh and nods in the direction of the exploring elf. Still looking around carefully the harengon walks next to the pale elf and would assist her in making further investigations. "Have you found something?"

Entering the room very carefully, looking for traps and hidden enemies, the harengon takes a look at the fresco for a moment. Do they have heard anything about this dungeon under the city? Was this an old dwarven fortress of some prominence?

Looking around Melang discovers a few steps leading deeper into the earth. He keeps looking around for concealed doors just to make sure he doesn't miss anything.

If nothing happens, he returns to the hall where you embarked on your quest a few minutes ago. In the present circumstances he was primed to see what Hamburg had done upstairs. There must be something in the room with them....

Thx @GreyWord there is a lot of effect in play, I'll let you tally up the damage to desern how well your mount is doing.

My math says
Mount AC 12+2

Imp 1 6+4

Imp 3 miss
Imp 4 6+6
Imp 5 5+7

total = 43 out of 59. Can it still fly with over half HP missing? There are some rules about that, but I don't remember if it is 5e rules :D

Strategically thinking Rerven, being an archer, avoids the thick of the fight, growls at TDK for not giving her a lift and gracefully climbs up the left column she is standing in front of (AO/16).

Deftly she draws her bow and almost instantaneously fires two of her arrows, one at an imp (3) and one at the flying sword.

OOC:
Please take a moment and read what Adrastheia has written Runekyndig.

She wrote that Revernn is not where you put her on the map, because it would be stupid for an archer to climb into melee while taking an extra long route to do that. Rervenn instead climbs onto the pillar right next to her, where she was standing at the start of the fight.

So no disadvantage on the attacks, because she is not in melee range.
2.
OOC:
Take a second look at the Dreadful Strike again. It is:

When you hit a creature with a weapon, you can deal an extra 1d6 psychic damage to the target, which can take this extra damage only once per turn.

She attacks 2 creatures, each creature once, the imp and the sword, because of that it is fine that she uses this power twice in one turn.
I hope this helps. :)

He moves moonbeam 40 feet down (it is 40 feet tall and I need it to be right below us) and as close to Rervenn as he can, given he can move it up to 60 feet).

Not sue how you measure diagonal distance, trigonometry says that to (X,Y,Z)= (40, 40,10) is 57,4 feets and would get right below TDK, but I've seen DMs who use alternative measurement methods in the grid

You all gather to catch your breath and examine the found artefacts. You find that the book is a book of shadows, a warlocks tome. In it there are instructions on how to call fourth imps from the land of fire and shadows. Its clear that someone made those 4 summoning circles on the bridge (blue square). Could it have been the fifth imp?
Its also clear that the previous group had taken a rest, just as you now do, on the other side of the bridge. An explors backpack have been left behind.
Rervenn suggests that the imp and the sword properly belonged to one of the raven queens warlocks. If his book, sword and imp are left behind then you properly find his body somewhere further onwards.

Fiends were summoned on the middle bridge, it is obvious we must go through middle doors The Dark Knight suggest to start with middle doors. You may find that he seems to be more concerned with the fiends and happy to kill them than the mission itself.

Whoever summoned the imps may have trapped the doors, I suggest caution And TDK describe that he would use mage hand to open the doors from a distance.

The adamantine door swings open on perfectly balanced hinges. Inside are four suits of rusted plate armor sans helmets, sized for a dwarf, stand in the corners of this 20-foot-high room. Each suit is draped in cobwebs. Dwarvish runes are carved into the far wall. The inscription reads, "A secret never before told will part Dumathoin’s lips."
In the floor is an open trapdoor, with stairs leading downwards. (green)

Feb 2, 2022 8:59 pm
The dark night descents into the darkness. He climbs and climes but finally, he reaches the end. Hallway going north and south. At each end, he can see light. His nose is also on alert. The dark knight has been on many a battlefield, and the smell of death lingers in these halls.
Rervenn ears pick up the subtle sound of movement somewhere around one or both corners.

Zankas follows them down, bringing the blazing blade of brightness with him. Seeing the lights at the end of either side, he mutters the command word for his rapier once more, dousing the light.

I have some magic that could turn one of us invisible, even during a fight. If someone were to be sneaky and quiet enough, they could surely scout ahead and draw less attention. But it would only last about a minute before wearing off, so not incredibly useful. he says in a whisper, scratching his chin in thought. TDK moves a bit back by the stairs to cast silent image (it has verbal component and he don't want to attract enemies just yet).
He returns follow by an illusion of a human in studded leather and crossbow in hand.
I will send this image forward to see if it attract any enemies and follow at a distance, my usual tactics when I don't know whom I am facing
But he holds on and waits for anyone to have a better idea before he simply moves on.

Although deep underground, this vault is lit by streams of sunlight that pour down from the ceiling, catching motes of dust in their luminous pools. Ornate columns support a thirty-foot-high vaulted ceiling, which is adorned with carvings of dwarves basking in the presence of their gods.

A angry voice can be heard from somewhere in the main room

Not sure if Rervenn had been spotted, the harengon follows the ashen-coloured elf girl as quiet as possible. Thinking about the pronunciation of the words, he may have a clue what awaits the groud around the corner. Not to anger their "host" he doesn`t start casting defensive magic right now, but on the back of his mind he goes through some spells just in case.

As he reaches the corner and sees nothing especially dangerous, he waits for his comrades to follow their ranger and keep together. Wanting to stay close to the Dark Knigh when they encounter this "big creature", Melang wants to urge the group to move forward.

The dark knight walks out into the open along with his illusion. As he turns the corner he can see the room opens up. In the corner with a large treasure pile, is an angry huge gold dragon.

A tainted knight? Here to claim glory and gold? How cliche!
You will not find that here. Only your death if you leave this place.

Its gaze is fully locked on the dark knight

But no one will say that Aurinax is not unreasonable. You may retrieve the bandit's corpses and leave with those.

Peeking around the corner (stealth 25), Melangs eyes grow large as he becomes aware of the golden dragon. Extremely careful he pulls his head back and returns to the others. Signing immediate danger to them. In hushed tones he conjures up flames that surround him.

Damn my penchant for being on the offensive! he thinks to himself as he considers his repertoire. I suppose waiting until the knight fellow is back is the best bet. Not 100% sure how we approach this. I wonder if we can convince him that we should be allowed to claim the gold? How would he know if we were lying? he thinks to himself

Surprised by the willingness of The Dark Knigh to shoulder some caracoled bodies, the haregon steps up next to the holy warrior and raises an eyebrow questioningly as he stands with his back to Aurinax, helping the man with the dead. Was this a ruse of the TDK to get close to the dragon without being bombarded with dragonfire and spells? Or why is the man delaying? They are here for the gold. Gold a golden dragon will not part easily with.

Unsure what to do, Melang - flanked by his images - decides to give the human a few seconds to convey a plan, or to gather his courage before he himself will initiate the fight if the paladin will not act.

Rervenn, though unharmed, suddenly feels her heart beat frantically, her eyes widen. She has to do something, she has to....without consciously thinking it, she utters the words and feels her body strengthen with resolve. Her skin darkens, turns a caramel shade and starts to bear familiar lines. Her eyes turn dark brown and green streaks appear in her hair. She is of the Raven Queen, she is of the dark, she is of nature and she is a guardian!

The floor around her changes as well, leaving the ground uneven. She must overcome her fear, must honor her vows. Leaves appear on her longbow and her arrows light up, before she lets them loose once more.

Thanks for the green in the initative order. It helps me a lot to keep track of whoms turn it is! *thumbs up*

Even with Lucky Footwork, I can' t reach a 22. At least the damage is a min-out. ;)

Melang can't fail this concentration check, because of TDK & Bladesong.

lvl3: 2
1 inspiration die (1d12), dragon curse (+5 to damage, 19 crit), Watcher’s Will (adv Int, Wis, Cha)

Zankas feels a sharp feeling in the back of his mind, making him consider very strongly if he should turn tail and leave this place. Gritting his teeth, he fights against the urge to run away and settles for staying behind his pillar. Summoning up what scraps of his courage remain, he lets out a howl of mental anguish and a blast of shimmering energy streaks out from his forehead, stabbing towards the dragon.

Reaction: Lucky Footwork
When you fail a Dexterity saving throw, you can use your reaction to roll a d4 and add it to the save, potentially turning the failure into a success. You can't use this reaction if you're prone or your speed is 0.

It wasn' t Melang's turn as the fire breath happend, so no Lucky Footwork because he used his reaction for silvery barbs.

Concentration: + Int Mod from Bladesinger, + 5 from TDK's aura, + Adv. from Warcaster Feat

Fire Breath 77:2 (Cold Shield)= 38:2 (Dex Save)= 38 HP Damage that Melang takes, halfed is 19 VS. 32 concentration Check. The blade still stays! :D
Saved from the brunt of the attack, by the blue flames which run along his sinewy body, the harengon tries to duck under the river of searing hotness that the dragon spews in their faces. Now, with his summoned weapon still in hand he goes into the offense. Staying low, the wizard slashes three times at the belly of the beast. Melang's mirror images swirl around the nasty rabbit and copy his strikes against the beast and render them difficult to parry.

Aurinax the gold dragon, protector of treasure below Waterdeeps, failed to stop the second group of intruders. These intruders are much more skilled and their magic is strong. Too strong! By the time he realises that his life might be in real danger, it is too late. As he tries to flee, steel and spells cut him down. He lands, crashes into a pile of gems and the last thing he sees is his favourite diamond, turning pink by his own blood.

The dragon fear disapates, and so does the magic of this dragon lair

End of combat

Breathing hard for a few seconds, Melangs eyes come up and search for TDK's gaze. Smiling at the old human the harengon gives him a thumb up and tells him "Thanks again. This was a splendid fight." Craning his neck to see Rervenn, the wizard's eyebrow goes up, as he sees here as somekind of tree creature. "You can come out there. The beast is dead - it is save now." he teases her.

Looking at the slightly burned Zankas, Melang asks in over-played irritation: "No faerie fire? Tstststs... and I was counting on you." before winking at the bard.

Feeling some of his defensive magic coming to an end in the next few seconds and minutes — there was a tone of spells protecting the wizard — he suggests to summon a floating disk to help to get some of the stuff out. Gold, bodies, dragon trophies. There is no shortage of possibilities.

In the evening, when the sit down to enjoy a good drink, and maybe some fine company, the harengon asks delighted: "And? What's next?"
Feb 22, 2022 9:34 am
TDK search for and picks all dead party weapons he could find. I'm claiming the weapons - they could share their wearer last feelings with Raven Queen. And he looks if anyone dare to object. He is also removing a singe dragon teeth to share with her patron.

You have to excuse me nevertheless. Fiends do not sleep while we are are slaughtering beautiful creatures.
Yes you hear pity or even shame in his voice as he mention slaying evil dragon.
Lords Alliance could send workers here to deliver the wealth. I'm not a delivery boy. See you!
And of he goes
Feb 22, 2022 5:54 pm
Zankas groans as the harengon calls out the lack of faeire fire. Yes yes, it's always 'make this glow' this and 'why can't I hit the barn without your magics' that. Damn dragon sparkled well enough without my encouragement. he says with a wink as he pats out the small smoking parts of his clothing.

Choosing to accompany Melang to get a drink he laughs at the question. Perhaps something a little less scaly this time? Perhaps we can invade some rich woman's soirée and liberate a few cakes and bottles of fine wine, eh?
Feb 24, 2022 3:24 pm
Rervenn joins the others in the evening. She has asked her queen for forgiveness as she should not have been so easily scared. Even if her aim has been true, her heart has been weak and it worries her. She does not let the others know this, though. She raises her glass like they do and thinks about the next challenge.
