Descending the Temple Depths

Deoring is about to tell the group about his sword, but heeds Dirk's warning to be quiet.

Keeping his musings to himself, he keeps moving forward, peering in the dim glow of mushrooms and weapons for any sign of the skittering creatures.

Da sure seemed proud when I told him I was leaving town to become a guard for the caravan. About the only time I ever made him proud. I still can't believe he gave me his sword from his days in the militia. Well, my blade is special to me, even if it isn't glowing, but they probably wouldn't care, anyway.

May Raynor protect us from these critters, whatever they are!

It is disorienting navigating by the strangely-shining light from scattered fungus growths. And, while the weapon-glows help to illuminate what's nearby, they are not directed, and the light coming up from them gets into the eyes, making it hard to see further away.

There are definitely small bodies moving away up ahead --you can see them as they pass between you and the fungal lights, but they seem 'more afraid of you than you are of them' (as the saying goes)... until... the skittering stops and they all seem to scatter away even faster, as though more afeared of something other than yourselves.

... At the same time the moss and fungus covered floor, over by the wall the group is passing, moves! A seven or eight foot section separates from its surroundings and sprouts legs... hundreds of disgusting tiny legs!... as a giant centipede turns --lightning quick-- to attack Deoring, venom dripping from mandibles almost as long as your forearm.

Anyone with Reflexes has a moment (or half a moment if that is possible:) to act.
‣ Who is close to Deoring in the marching order?
‣ What do you all do?

OOC:
Albert does not have reflexes, so his reaction is not quick.
I think he was standing somewhere in the middle. In front of Roald, Rook, the captain and Asha. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
Albert yells "Watch out!" when he sees the moss move, but it's already too late. Deoring is dangerously close to the thing and this hallway doesn't offer much in terms of cover. He's pretty sure that his broomstick won't be able to pierce the hard insect carapace, so all he can think of to do is get to where Deoring is standing and try to parry the foul creature's attack. He starts moving that way, hoping to get there in time... Or at least in time for the second strike.

OOC:
Although Deoring has Reflexes, he is fresh faced, after all.
He spins toward the noise, sees this giant creature and shakily points his father’s old short sword at it, feet suddenly frozen, eyes wide with terror. He’s seen a lot of things running around the streets and alleyways back home, but he never even imagined something like this.

His voice cracks as he shouts, Aaaah!
Feb 27, 2022 4:34 am
You all see Deoring bravely hold his sword between himself and the hideous monster bearing down on him, faster than he can react.

- Rook -

You are able to do something before it hits, but there are lots of slow people milling about between yourself and the action.

What do you do?

- Albert -

This thing moves fast --faster than you usually do, anyway. It will take a monumental effort on your part to interpose your staff (of yourself, if you are not careful) between it and its intended... meal?

What do you do? ('defending' might require a roll, probably +DEX?)

Roald, sees in the dim light a patch of moss falling off of the wall. Strangely it's fast falling movement continues in a horizontal one towards Deoring
Only then he notices the legs. Oh no, OH NO!

Still feeling the effect of the moral boost he had a few moments ago, he manoeuvres himself towards the beast his back touching the hall's wall to get ahead of whoever is walking in front of him. It is like his sword is guiding him, and not the other way around. Is this thing glowing brighter? He thinks in the split second before shouting: "NOT ON MY WATCH!" While his sword comes down on the creature.
OOC:
Because it took Roald a second or 2 to understand what was happening, he will definitely not be first.
If there is a conflict I will edit the post later

Falur see the attack coming on Deoring and leaps ahead to distract the creature. It may have many legs but each one is just like a sapling, I can cut off a leg with each blow of my axe. Shouting to add to the distraction TAKE THAT STUPID INSECT
Feb 28, 2022 2:19 am
Rook hesitates a moment, torch and sparker in hand. He'd feared a horde of creepy crawlies scuttling out at them, not a beast of this size! Fire might deter the creature, but if he sparked the torch now, what night sight they'd managed to gain recently would be gone.

He took quick stock of his surroundings. There was little room to swing a sling in these tight quarters, with other practically at his elbows. This was less a scouting party and more a company of troops. He quickly decided to take a few steps back, keeping clear of the scrum, with torch in hand. If things took a turn for the worst, he could light hurl the torch then.

- Deoring -

Shockingly fast, the centipede bites at you. If it sees the sword held out between it and its prey, it does not seem to react --though, of course, maybe it does not know what a sword is.

The glistening mandibles close on your shoulder, your leather armour slowing their penetration slightly, possibly giving you one last chance....

• What do you do to resist?
OOC:
• (What you do will affect both what you roll and what the range of outcomes are: Maybe you try to pull away and roll +STR; maybe you deflect or dodge and roll +DEX; maybe you just power through and endure it, rolling +CON (high stat, but also high risk as any venom will already be in play); maybe you do something clever and roll +INT. Or something else (feel free discuss it first).
Whatever you do, show us how your character reacts and thinks.)

Deoring, shocked that he’s been attacked by this giant creature, pulls his shoulder back and tries to twist away from it. Scared out of his wits, survival instincts taking over. Just trying to get away from the attack.
OOC:
If he can, he will slash at it with his sword as he does so, but his main purpose is to disengage from it to protect himself. To him, this is terrifying!

Albert sees the giant bug bite into Deoring "No!" he shouts, seeing the mandibles pierce the leather on his shoulder. He raises his staff, using it like a spear, and jabs it with force into one of the creature's eyes. It probably won't do much damage, but maybe it will make the thing think twice before really biting down. "Get away from him, you foul creature!"

Rolls

Defend Deoring (+STR) - (2d6+1)

Falur has chopped off three front legs but this had had no effect in distracting the creatures attack on Deorling however it has created a space for Falur to aim his axe below the creatures mandible.

Falur thinks he had better change his attack and swings his axe as hard as he can below the creatures mandible. "Let go you pest!"

- Deoring -

The monster's bite is deflected by the tough leather on your shoulder and instead plunges into the soft flesh at your neck. It does not hurt nearly as much as you expected, and there is almost no blood spilling from where the smooth mandibles are still attached to your body.

It really is not that bad, so far as you can tell, though you don't notice the insidious path of the poison yet.

Your sword bounced off the hardened underbelly of the beast, and is now pinned between you and it. You are at risk of cutting yourself with it if you try to use it before being extricated from this hideous embrace.

Rolls

Damage to Deoring - (1d6+1)

(6) + 1 = 7

With all the action going on in the crowded space, people trying to get away while others are pushing towards the creature. Roald has no other option than trying to hit it on the back. He knows that's probably the least effective place to strike. But his companions need help and there's no time to overthink it.

Roald hurries along the wall, finds a foot high boulder to launch himself in the air to give him some more momentum. As his sword comes down on the creature's back the glow intensifies.

A crack is heard when his blade hits the back. Roald is not certain whether the sound is coming from the creature's carapace, bones or his sword.

Rolls

Damage - (1d6+1)

(3) + 1 = 4

- Roald -

Your heroic leap is a tad hampered by the passage's roof close above you --more space would make it even more spectacular-- but it still affords you access to the monster's back, out of the way of your other companions.

Whether your sword's glow does anything is hard to tell, but the blade clearly hurts the beast, which instinctively lashes out at you with the pincers on its tail. Its intent seems to be to dislodge your irritating presence from there, more than to inflict injury, but the blow still hurts.

• Do you let yourself get tossed away (back among your companions), or do you try to keep on it back there? If so: how?

Rolls

Flick off Roald - (1d6-2)

(2) - 2 = 0

Dirk hears a bunch of commotion behind him, he quickly turns around and sees the giant centipede attacking Deoring! He sees some people landing blows on it, and Dirk decides to enter the fray! He attempts to attack the centipede with his machete!

EDIT: Forgot to specify that I was using STR in my roll.

Dirk manages to cut off a few of the centipedes legs!

Rolls

Light Weapon Damage - (1D6)

(6) = 6

Despite having many legs, the centipede does not seem to like having any of them chopped off... or maybe it just objects to the smell, which is pretty nauseating as whatever it uses for blood spurts out from the stumps.

Albert's blow to the 'eye' causes it to rear back, temporarily releasing its hold on Deoring.

It is very hard to judge motivations from such an alien creature, but maybe it does not want to be surrounded by all these attackers who invaded its 'bedroom' and disturbed its sleep? If afforded the chance --and possibly some continued violent-incentive-- it may be inclined to flee?
Mar 2, 2022 2:15 pm
Albert quickly pulls Deoring back, away from the creature, trying to get him to a safe distance while it's distracted. "It's alright, Deoring, I've got you. Let the others handle it." He says as he feels a warm liquid on his hands. Whether it's Deoring's blood, the creature's blood or some kind of mucus is impossible to tell in this darkness. Whatever it is, that wound is going to get infected quickly down here. Better act fast.
