As he rubs his finger and thumb, Grom’s peripheral vision is disturbed by an unnaturally straight shape. Looking up, the Druid sees what appears to be a wooden-shafted spear amidst the thatch of the opposite bank of the river. Excitedly, he shouts, "Look! Hither", and then wades into the water and swims to the far bank

Pakano
Grom you notice in you peripheral vision that Pakano is also qucikly heading towards the spear. You do however reach it moments before him.

The spear is crafted from fire-treated ash wood and tipped with a serrated steel broadhead. A tattered deer hide banner is tangled around the shaft near the spearhead, you can't make out what it's emblazoned with, but you see black and red markings. A charred human hand hangs from a leather strap tied to the spear’s shaft. Shattered wrist bones tumble from the base of the severed appendage like pebbles from an open sack.

"I saw it first!" he complains. Then he looks around at the rest of the group. "Who objects to my right to this spear? I challenge you to a wrestling match for this prize!"

Igbork rolls his eyes. He's not strong but maybe his cunning will show Pakano his limits. He points at a bush a bit upstream and calls out to Pakano
Why would I want to wrestle with you when I can just get one of the five spears that are behind this bush?

Without taking his eyes off Pakano, Atticus speaks to the others. My brothers, allow me the honor of championing any of us who wants to lay claim to the spear. On my honor...I know not the outcome, but I'll do my best.

"Grom's hand was on it first. Pakano, you need to mind yourself. Let's take a peek at it, then we'll determine who might get the most benefit out of its use. Atticus, what do you think - you think you could beat Pakano in a wrestling match?" He eyes Grom up and down. "Do you think your odds better than Grom?"

Looking at Pakano for a second and then over at Koram, Atticus breaks the silence. I think either way he needs to be brought down a peg or two. My chances are as good as anyone else's.

"I assert my right to the Spear, for no better reason than you, Pakano, could have got us killed by that moose, and because you need to learn a little humility.", Grom looks around at Atticus and smiles. He then turns to Koram and says, "thank you for your words, brother". Looking back at Pakano, defiantly, the Druid adds, "I choose Atticus as my champion, may Sister Cinder bless him"

"May Sister Cinder bless him," Koram adds.
OOC:
Conditional/Prepared Action: If Pakano seems to chicken out or otherwise reach for the spear out of turn, Koram will whisper an incantation and gesture with his hand. Suddenly the loud roar and continuous growl of a sabre-tooth tiger emerges directly from the other side of the copse of trees where the spear lays.

Pakano
Pakano snorts at Igbork's attempt at deception. "Humility is something the weak has invented to make themselves feel better," he scoffs at Grom's words.

He tosses aside his own spear and assumes a wrestlers stance as he waits for Atticus.
OOC:
To determine a contest’s winner, have the competing character attempt four Athletics checks. The character can substitute an Acrobatics, Deception, or Intimidation check each once in place of an Athletics check (thus, the character must still attempt at least one Athletics check). A successful check earns the character 1 Wrestling Point, a critical success earns 2 Wrestling Points, and a critical failure deducts 1 Wrestling Point (to a minimum of 0). A character with 4 or more Wrestling Points after their fourth check wins; otherwise, Pakano wins.

So Atticus give me four checks, of which at least one must be an Athletics check.

Atticus sets his gear and weapons on the ground. Watching Pakano for any signs of treachery, Atticus stretches his arms and legs to prepare for the match.

With a surge of speed, Atticus lunges at Pakano and the match begins.

OOC:
Yeah...either the cycle is broken or I've doomed Atticus...lol

Koram cheers as Atticus proves what all already knew - he was a monster of a man, and not one to take lightly in feats of strength. "Yes!" he yells while Haitith yawns nearby. Upon close inspection, one of the dragon's eyes is ever-so-slightly open, taking in the amazing scene quietly.
OOC:
Squadfather - THERE are the rolls you've missed in our other game! Amazing, nice job! Hopefully that'll shove some humility down Pakano's throat lol

OOC:
Without a doubt I think Atticus just made an enemy...lol

OOC:
Yeahhhh I can't see someone of Pakano's temperament being able to live this down very easily. We'll all have to help watch your back.

Pakano
The match begins evenly, though Pakano has an early advantage. Does not take long however, before Atticus have figured out his fightning style. He is able to grab Pakano and lift him over his head and knock him to the ground with a heavy thud. He gets back on his feet, but the lift took all energy out of the warrior and he isn't able to put up much of a fight after this. Moments later, he lays pinned to the ground beneath Atticus.

Once let go, he quickly gets up and starts complaining. "You didn't wrestle honorably!"

He gives an angry stare, but seems to accept he lost the spear when you hear him mutter. "Spear looks cursed anyway."

Sulkily he gets back to the task at hand and fills his wicker basket with water.

Looking the spear over you notice it is quite well made, and in fact radiating a magical aura. Looking at the deer hide banner you see it is emblazoned with the black silhouette of a woolly mammoth against a backdrop of red flames.
OOC:
Anyone with training can spend 10 minutes to try to identify the spear. It will take a Arcana, Nature, Occultism or Religion check with DC 16.
May 3, 2022 2:32 pm
Koram reaches out his hand after Grom checks the spear over, "There's magic seeping from the wood itself. If I may, I think I can figure out what it's fully capable of."
