Edith snaps out of the trance she has been in over James' body. Tommy must not see the body and the blood and, oh god, the mess.

She stands up and hurries to the door pulling Tommy close so he can't see into the room. "It's okay, son. Go back to our rooms and I'll be there..." she trails off not sure when she'll be back. "I'll be there soon. I just have to take care of some things for Mr. Gardiner." Her voice catches on a sob, but she pulls herself together and walks Tommy down the hall a few steps. "Really, dear. I'll just be a little bit longer."
OOC:
What time of day is it?

OOC:
@Edith, entirely up to you! As you had the keys you can determine what time you let them in

OOC:
Let's say it's mid-morning. 10:00 am.

Tommy starts to walk down the hall, then turns "Mom, why have you got catsup all over your dress?"

Edith realises she has blood all over the front of her dress and on her hands.

RogertheShrubber says:

Also, does he know if Mr. Gardiner knew Ancient Greek?[/ooc]
OOC:
Sorry missed this. One of the books Humphrey lent Gardiner was "A Primer in Greek Vocabulary". You would assume he doesn't speak the language.

John lifts the body again, retrieving the now blood covered knife. As he does so, a key falls from Gardiner's pocket.

The knife is made from obsidian but has no markings.

From where Humphrey is right now, he can't see any books. Perhaps the other side of the bookshelf that faces into the bedroom?
OOC:
Note that a 96+ on a skill that is under 100 is a fumble and usually results in something unfortunate.

Edith tries to smile, but she knows it's tremulous. "I'm making meatloaf for dinner and I got so messy." She shakes her head. "It's terrible, isn't it? I'll be home to clean up soon."

Satisfied, Tommy runs back to his room to play.

I found a key.
John quickly walks over and tries not show the excitement he is experiencing in this odd situation.

While John and William are distracted by the locked box, Humphrey slips around the other side of the bookshelf and begins looking for the books he lent Mr. Gardiner... and maybe any other valuable tomes that might be of interest to his clients. He feels slightly guilty about pilfering books from a dead friend but times are tough and Mr. Gardiner won't be needing them anytime soon.

Edith comes back into the room with a heavy heart. She's trying to hold back the tears, but seeing James on the floor and everyone going through his things makes her feel unbelievably sad.

"We should call the police."

Humphrey steps into the bedroom and looks at the bookcase. It's a finely carved piece with glass-fronted doors, either side of which are the busts of two flute-playing cherubs carved into the upright moldings that support the doors. All the woodwork is detailed in intricate scrollwork. There is a drawer at the bottom of the unit.

Humphrey opens the glass doors and scans through the books, many of which are on banking and finance,a few travel books on obscure places and some occult books including:

Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Rome,
by E.M. Berens.

The Interpretation of Dreams, by Sigmund Freud,
in German

The top shelf does not have enough books to fill it so a bookend has been used to keep the books upright. the bookend is a monstrous thing, looking like some human-like squid creature.

OOC:
Is there a phone in the building?
Jul 22, 2022 4:03 am
"I guess we should see if we can open it, eh John," William says. His curiosity is clearly getting the better of him, and quickly.

OOC:
The nearest phone would be Edith's apartment down the hall otherwise there's a phone for all the tenants on the ground floor. The police office is a couple of minutes down the road, someone could run and get somebody (like a little boy perhaps?)

Mr. Gardiner's bookshelf is impressively crafted and clearly very expensive. The carvings adorning the it are delicate and clearly the work of a master artisan. Humphrey scans the shelves and quickly spots two of the books he lent Mr. Gardiner. Unfortunately, the most important and sought after volume is no where to be found. Humphrey takes a second look at the shelf, careful reading the spines of the book to make sure he hadn't missed anything but before long he finds himself staring at the disturbing squid human bookend.

"Why would anyone use a bookend like this?" he wonders to himself.
"Perhaps, it's a valuable antique?" he speculates while examining the sculpture for any indication of what this monster is called.
OOC:
Humphrey hasn't opened the glass doors of the bookshelf and is examining the sculpture from where he is standing.

John will see if the key works in this box and if so will open the box for William and John both to see what's inside.

Yes, let us take a look Mr. Morgan.

Edith heads down to the ground floor to the phone. She knows she could use her own or send Tommy to the police station, but she doesn't want to risk him seeing Mr. Gardiner in his current state or overhearing the conversation. She asks to be connected to the police station.

Hello. I'm Edith Cost and I run the place for Ma Shanks. She gives them the address of the boarding house.

Something terrible has happened to James.. Mr. Gardiner, one of our tenants. He's dead."
