A Rainbow Runs Red

Sep 1, 2022 8:46 pm
A music video in an old house. Light and fog rigs pushing the van based generator to its limit.

No, you're at the wheel, but you're in the backseat; Mickey's in the front lighting up. You can see the river coming up to meet you.

======================

Cade your eyes burst open. You're safe in the passenger seat, Ash is driving. Classes are off for a long weekend.

Ash, this stretch of road is long and straight, and you're cruising on caffeine and snacks.
Sep 2, 2022 6:25 am
Cade jerks involuntarily as she snaps out of her waking nightmare. She glances out the window and then over to Ash, as she lets out a long sigh. "I truly hope making the trip up to that old house this weekend will finally rid me of those awful reoccurring dreams, Ash." She reaches to the console and retrieves a half-empty bottle of water, twists open the plastic cap, and takes a long swallow. "I want to move on passed this and get on with my life. Make our band one everyone is listening to...well, all the right people anyway."

Out of the periphery of his right eye, Ash catches Cade's flinch. "It happened again, didn't it?" He asks a second before she speaks up. He keep his focus on the road, but listens to every word she imparts to him. "I too hope this will put an end to your dilemma and who knows, maybe we can come away with the inspiration for a couple new songs out of the ordeal."
Sep 2, 2022 8:00 pm
You finally come upon the correct turn off, the trees bending inward on the less used path. The sun at your back becomes more and more frequently covered by clouds. Ahead, you finally reach the old bridge, 4 wooden crosses planted to the right. They sag slightly from the elements, otherwise unchanged by a year.

From here you can see the house on the hill. It is glaringly ordinary from this angle, if run down.

An old tractor slowly crosses the bridge ahead of you, but eventually the path is clear.
Sep 2, 2022 9:11 pm
Ash awaits patiently, as the tractor crawls across the bridge. He fidgets with the silver band on his left thumb out of habit and looks over to the pretty pale-skinned woman with the long white hair. "How you doing over there, Cade?"

"We got this."
He tries to reassure her.

The combination of the four crosses, the bridge, and first sighting of the old house caused a chill to run up Cade's spine. Normally, she was not the type to easily weirded out. She had stared down many a hater in her teen and twenties so far and very little truly scared her. But, these elements had been preying on her thoughts for a year.

"I am getting a bit antsy over the whole scene, actually." Cade replies honestly. "I have a bad feeling about this place..."
Sep 3, 2022 4:51 am
The weather seems determined to prey on your fears, the clouds blowing in faster as you take the single switchback up the steep hill. The house is deeper than it appeared from the bridge, a sagging porch and hedged in back garden the only actual signs of entry.

As Ash parks, the car settles into place the various rumblings of the engine petering to silence. The wind takes its place. In the distance are sounds that may be approaching rain and distant thunder.

"Storm is moving in pretty fast." Cade observes. "I don't think we are going to have much time to look around before it hits. We should get into the shelter of the porch." She grabs her things, opens the passenger door, and hops out.
Sep 4, 2022 4:58 am
Ash swings out of the driver's side and pushes the auto-lock on his key fob. He moves to the trunk and pulls out the things he's prepared to carry into the house for their investigation, then locks the trunk as well and closes beside Cade. "Yeah. Good call, Black." He tugs out his phone and snaps a couple pics of the house, before heading toward the only visible door.
Sep 4, 2022 8:11 pm
The porch looks perhaps even worse up close than further away, one whole section requiring ducking. At least it still keeps out the rain. The door itself is locked, though the lock itself is pretty old.
OOC:
1. Now is the time to establish what you are carrying on you and what's in the car.
2. A quick paraphrase of the last time this door was encountered. "This is a rating 1 challenge, presumably to get you used to the system. This means that you roll 2d6 + rating and you need to get 7+challenge rating, or in this case an 8.

Also since you're not yet in the house, don't worry about rolling the House Die, but normally that'd happen here.
Sep 4, 2022 10:30 pm
Cade gives the old lock a try, as she pulls and twists to see if it will snap and allow them entrance.
OOC:

The knob has some give and whine, but it stops just before it feels like it would pop. The wind picks up around you, louder than you've ever heard. Shutters smack against the upper walls of the old house.

"Here. Let me give it try, Cade." Ash states as he takes the door knob in hand and attempts to force the lock open himself.

OOC:
If I had thought of it earlier, I should've given you a boon for building on Cade's attempt.
You turn the lock back to where Cade had it and with a shoulder in just the right place (more than once). The door pops open.

Inside the wind blows around cobwebs in the corners of an old, sheeted living room. A green rug lays in the entry, a sheet of paper atop it, as if waiting. There's also a hallway and a closet at the far side of the room. The former drops quickly into darkness. The latter is partially open.
OOC:
Cade, has this room been in your nightmares?

Ash digs his flashlight out of the duffel bag and presses it on. He crouches down and picks up the sheet of paper. "This place is old. Looks like no one has lived in this place in years." He observes.
Sep 8, 2022 9:26 am
Cade also lights up her maglight and extends the collapsible truncheon in her other hand. She hesitates as the room within is revealed. "Its exactly like the room in my nightmares." She tells Ash. "I see it over and over and I can never leave it no matter how hard I try to move on."

The page appears to be torn from a book, a journal maybe. The handwriting is mostly clean, but inconsistent.
[ +- ] Page Image
[ +- ] Page Text
You can hear the rain approaching now, a sheet moving across the hills. It urges you to enter. It urges you to run.
Sep 10, 2022 8:23 am
Ash reads the curious page with interest, but is quickly prompted by the upturn of wind and the approach of rain. He steps into the front room far enough to avoid getting drenched. "Odd." He says to Cade. "The page looks to be one from the journal of an extreme recluse who could not be lured from this house for any reason."

He reads the text to Cade.
Sep 10, 2022 8:37 pm
Cade warily straddles the threshold and hooks the end of the truncheon into the green rug. She pulls it halfway between the open doorway, so that the door will not completely close, then steps inside. "Just in case." She tells Ash. "I don't want to get stuck in this room like in my nightmare." Looking down at the paper, as he reads, she comments, "This guy was really messed up. He preferred to stay in here with weird noises and unseen children than go out and spend a day with this girl."
Sep 10, 2022 9:47 pm
Cade's actions seem almost psychic as the door tries to blow shut, getting caught on the rug. The wind makes a weird buzzing sound passing through that door and others unseen. Almost like the low buzz of a thousand strange reed instruments.
Sep 11, 2022 7:11 pm
Cade narrows her eyes, as the door tries to close. She gestures toward it, as the sound erupts. "SEE! It tried to lock us in just like in my nightmare."

"Grab something from in the room and help me block the door from closing."
She calls out to Ash.
Sep 12, 2022 7:08 pm
"WOAH! You weren't wrong about this house!" Ash responds excitedly upon seeing and hearing the unnatural reaction the house appears to take as Cade stuffs the rug in the doorway. He quickly grabs the coffee table in his free hand and attempts to shove it in the breach to help keep the door open.
Sep 15, 2022 4:47 am
The coffee table moves easy enough, the sheet only getting caught under the leg for a moment. It's simple wood, but solid. At a glance it was made anywhere between 20 and 50 years ago.

The door doesn't bang like it's being shut necessarily. At least, not by an entity, so much as just the wind.
Sep 15, 2022 8:15 am
Cade looks at the temporary blockade they have set in the doorway and nods. "I don't know if it will hold while we search through this old house, but I like the idea that I can leave this room and not be stranded here forever."

She moves over to the closest and uses her truncheon to widen the gap between the partially opened doors. "Let me see if the same items are in here, as in my nightmare." She says to Ash.

One thing is immediately not present in the closet. No guitar leaps out at you.

The box on the floor is present though, with the canvas green eye watching you as you search. As you recall, the box contains 3 old pieces of mail and a few dead flies. The same number, if you bother to count.
[ +- ] Mail
Sep 16, 2022 10:39 pm
Ash pulls his attention away from the front door and follows Cade's movement over to the closet. "Well? What did you find? Is it what you expected..like the door trying to close us in?"
Sep 16, 2022 10:52 pm
"Yes. And no." She says picking up the canvas holding it up as she turns to face Ash. "The one-eyed green monster is in here and the box with the old mail in it, but no Mickey Mouse shit."
Sep 19, 2022 6:36 pm
OOC:
Heads up that you are always welcome to continue talking/exploring. The house may not always have a response to your actions.
The rain is beginning to blow in the door at this point, though on this side of the room you're largely fine. It is a bit chilly with the door open like this. Perhaps the rain is bringing a cold front with it.
Sep 20, 2022 8:01 am
Ash gives the staring eye on the canvas a side eye of his own, as he reaches into the box and examines the old mail within. He takes up the invoice and notes the selections on it. "I'd say someone was into studying spirits and learning to communicate with them."

"I agree with that observation, Ash." Cade says as she moves from the closet and flashes the beam of her maglight down the narrow hallway leading deeper into the house. "Follow me. I want to see what is in this old house and why it has tormented my dreams for so long."
Sep 20, 2022 8:16 pm
Placing the old invoice back in the box, Ash glances toward the open hallway and nods. "On it." He says, taking a tighter grip on his flashlight and hoisting the baseball bat into his other hand. He takes a deep breath and accompanies Cade into the hallway.
Sep 20, 2022 9:07 pm
The beam of the flashlight hits the edge of the hall and stops. The light illuminates the doorway just fine, and doesn't appear to be hitting a wall (physical objects will pass just fine), but for some reason the light just...stops.
Sep 21, 2022 9:42 pm
Cade notices the weird situation with the light beams. "What the fuck?!" She taps her maglight against the heel of her other hand and couple times and shines the light at the hallway again, with the same result.
Sep 22, 2022 7:33 am
Ash squints with one eye at the anomaly. "The light has to go somewhere. Since it doesn't illuminate that hallway, I can only conclude that what we see and where the light goes are two different places." He shoves the end of the bat through the threshold and pulls it back to see if causes a reaction.
Sep 23, 2022 8:27 pm
Cade holds back long enough to see if the light-absorbing hallway eats the end off the bat, then steps through.
Sep 24, 2022 2:36 am
The bat indeed doesn't react to the hallway. As you pass in, the flashlight turns off completely and switching it on or off doesn't change this fact. Feeling along the hall is easy enough to navigate, though it is "dark as the inside of a skull." This phrase bubbles up in your mind unbidden as you pass through the hall.

Emerging from the hallway is a long room, with brick columns to the right and large raised windows past them on the right wall. The windows let in light, but there is utter darkness beyond them. You can't see the storm outside; you're not even sure you can still hear it.

Forward and to the left, the room eventually fades into darkness. The floorboards near the second column look like someone started to pry them up.

Sep 24, 2022 10:12 pm
"This place is weird as fuck." Cade utters, stuffing her ineffectual maglight into her pack and slowly moving forward to the point of the second column. "No way is this room inside that house we entered. Am I right?" She listens for the sounds of the storm and her gaze falls on the loose floorboards. She crouches down and examines the spot, giving the boards a light tug to see if they are loose.
Sep 24, 2022 10:22 pm
Likewise, Ash stows away his flashlight and he looks intently at the windows. "Hard to tell, Cade." He answers her immediate question. "We didn't exactly get time to do a sweep of the exterior of the old house before the storm forced us inside." He turns to face her and see her at the floor. "But, my gut tells me NO."
Sep 24, 2022 10:27 pm
The boards are easy enough to pry up, but the hole under the floor curves away.

Listening closely you hear, tick...tick...tick...

Sep 26, 2022 7:57 pm
Ash hears the ticking and the giggle. "Hell-o! Is there someone here with us?" He looks at Cade and adds, quietly. "The journal page did say the sounds of a little girl were heard by that guy who didn't want to leave this place years ago."
Sep 26, 2022 8:27 pm
Cade sticks the end of her truncheon into the hole to see how deep it is and then in the direction of the curve to possibly gauge how far in the gap may be. "True enough." She acknowledges Ash's surmise.
Sep 26, 2022 9:58 pm
Once you go around the curve your truncheon quickly hits something. Not the end of the hole, wood perhaps? It jostles.

Tick tick tick tick
Sep 26, 2022 10:28 pm
Reluctantly, Cade reaches into the hole and tries to feel for whatever is in there and drag it out. "Ash. Pull me out as the first sign of trouble. I don't want to loose my arm."
Sep 28, 2022 7:13 am
Ash gives Cade a look of concern and gets closer, in case he does need to pull her out of the hole, should something pull back. "Feel anything? Be careful."
Sep 28, 2022 6:45 pm
It's easy enough for Cade to grab onto the object. A two faced clock. The left face is currently set at about 4:15, the right at approximately 8:30

Tick tick tick tick
Sep 29, 2022 9:17 pm

"Can you stop that clock from its incessant ticking?" Ash asks Cade. "What's the current time any way?" He tugs out his cell and looks at the screen to see if it shows the time.
Sep 30, 2022 10:36 pm
"it was a child I think or at least the shadow of one. It skipped across the room." Cade finally says. She grips the clock and looks for any winding mechanics or setting pins.

The clock doesn't have specific setting pins, but in your investigation it's clear that the hands are easy enough to move.

Is it the clock that's ticking, or the room? You can both hear the giggling occasionally now.

Cade puts the clock closer to one ear to try to finally determine if the ticking is coming from the device of their surroundings. "We should look for another way out of this room." She gestures toward the darkness opposite the way they entered. "I wonder..if I set the hands of both faces to the same time, what might happen?"
Oct 2, 2022 1:29 am
"You're correct of course." Ash agrees. "We should keep moving and try not to waste too much time in one area, at least until we've checked out all the rooms in this house."

He slowly begins walking toward the opposite end of the room.

Oct 6, 2022 7:31 am
"Woah! That was insane." Ash comments and glances down at the clock. "That ticking is starting to get annoying." He stares into the dark other end of the room, trying to focus on the details in the shadows. "Let's keep moving, alright Cade?"
Oct 6, 2022 10:14 pm
"Yeah." Cade agrees. "Let us see if there's another way out of here."

She leaves the clock on the floor for now and moves with Ash to check out the rest of the area.

The pair of you move together past pillars.

Past pillars.

Pillars.

Leveraged up floorboards.

Pill- wait.
Oct 7, 2022 7:48 am
Ash does a double take and glances behind them. "Wait! That's not right! We're not getting anywhere."
Oct 7, 2022 6:58 pm
Behind you is darkness, the door isn't even visible anymore.

A giggle to your left
Oct 7, 2022 7:02 pm
"I'd ask you to pinch me to make sure this is not a nightmare, but I can already tell it isn't. At least not in the typical sense." Cade says to Ash. She looks around to see if she can still see the clock. "If the normal way doesn't work getting us out, there's not many other options:That stupid clock or through one of these windows. And I've seen in my previous nightmares that throwing things is not a good idea."
Oct 9, 2022 7:17 pm
"I have a hunch." Ash says to Cade quietly and points to their left. "Let's follow the sounds and the shadows. Maybe its trying to get us to follow." Ash begins moving in the direction of the child-like giggles.
Oct 9, 2022 7:52 pm
Cade gives a quiet, if frustrated, nod to Ash and accompanies him to their left.
Oct 10, 2022 5:53 pm
You follow the giggles for awhile, drawn through the darkness, but no progress. How long have you actually been in this room? Does it have an end?

You find yourself back at the columns, though you could swear you had been moving towards the other side of the room.
Oct 11, 2022 7:50 am
Cade shakes her head. "So frustrating..."

"Maybe the way out of this area is hidden." She moves over to the windows looks for a latch or well-hidden catch that might actually be a door or an exit through one of the windows.
Oct 11, 2022 5:56 pm
Moving past, you see that the floorboards aren't in the state you left them, but in fact the state you found them in. Someone clearly started to pry them, but they're in place.

Getting to the windows, they let in light, but outside there's...nothing. The image behind the panel is a dark void. Their height makes them a little hard to inspect, but the glass seems to be old stacked glass cubes. Each of which is maybe a quarter of a foot in each direction. This seems to include thickness.
Oct 11, 2022 9:03 pm
Ash sees the floorboards and moves over to crouch and examine them. He looks up to Cade. "You ever seen an old movie called Groundhog Day? Well, I think we're stuck in the same kind of loop until we do exactly what, whoever created it, decides we've done things in the right order in here."
Oct 13, 2022 7:18 am
"UGH! This is why I've never enjoyed playing video games." Cade groaned. "My solutions to problems never seem to match what the programmer has decided is the answer." She crouches down beside Ash. "Do you think that weirdo clock is back in there? I don't hear it."
Oct 14, 2022 8:33 pm
As if naming it causes it to be, the clock begins ticking anew.
Oct 14, 2022 9:38 pm
"Let me this time." Ash says to Cade and repeats her actions when she first pulled the clock out from under the floor. He reaches in carefully and tries to get hold of it.
Oct 15, 2022 7:33 pm
Easy enough to get the clock, even if it's a little nerve wracking, not being able to see what you're doing. Unlike the rest of the room, it hasn't reset. The hands are both on 4:15.

The seconds tick on loudly.
Oct 18, 2022 9:46 pm
"Hold on to yourself." Ash calls out. "I have an idea and I hope its not a really bad one." He grasps the clock steady in one hand and winds the hands on both faces forward to 12 o'cock.

Not technically, but thinking about passing through it....causes you to be stolen away to the next room. I realized I'm not 100% sure how to achieve that in text form and I think asking the question is close enough....
Oct 20, 2022 8:57 pm
Cade jumps and looks around quickly. She wipes at her eyes in disbelief. "What just happened? How?!"
Oct 20, 2022 9:33 pm
"How are we supposed to..?" Ash reaches toward the door opening between the clock faces and suddenly finds himself and Cade somewhere else. "Un-holy shit!" He exclaims. "I don't know what happened myself, but I'm glad the both of us are here to corroborate the experience. No one is going to believe this shit."
Oct 20, 2022 10:39 pm
The two of you are in what might be a foyer, except that the front door is missing. You've appeared in a corner (left of where your brain tells you the door should be), unceremoniously dropped (whether you fall over is up to you) onto the cold stone floor. Across the room is a very stout set of doors, with a passage leading off to each side.

In the middle of the room is an old worn rug. It seems like it was originally a blue rug with gold embroidery, though it is now old and stained. The stains themselves are old and red, casting the rug in a dirty purple.
Oct 21, 2022 10:06 pm
Avoiding the old rug, with its dubious stains, Cade moves over to the double doors across the odd antechamber. She glances down each side passage, as she closes to the doors and motions for Ash to keep up.
Oct 22, 2022 2:16 am
Each passageway stretches a handful of feet before turning, the distances approximately even.
Oct 23, 2022 8:58 pm
Cade looks for knobs or handles and tries to open the stout double doors. "Get ready Ash." She whispers to him.
Oct 23, 2022 9:10 pm
Ash tugs out his bat from the straps of the pack he's carrying and nods to Cade. "Ready.."

The handle catches, the door is locked.

Oct 25, 2022 10:28 pm
The narrow hall leads another few feet before coming to a small door, matching more closely the aesthetic from when you first entered the house. It sits slightly cracked and you can see what appears to be a shelf of books.
Oct 26, 2022 8:34 pm
Cade quickly looks back to Ash and then slowly opens the door to the room beyond.
Oct 26, 2022 9:00 pm
Ash follows and shoulders his bat, ready to swing if anything should pop out at them from the room beyond the partially opened door. He takes a deep breath, wanting to say something, but concerned it may give their location away to any unseen threat nearby.

Cade sits down in the old chair to read the entries in the notebook. Her knee bumps into something unexpected. She feels under the desk and finds the holstered pistol. She pulls it out carefully and places it on the top of the desk while she reads passages out loud to Ash.

"Great. So, somehow...we're stuck in in this guy's memories made physical. This haunted house is more messed up than anyone knows..."
Nov 1, 2022 8:41 pm
Ash glances around the library, while remaining with Cade at the desk. "Do you think all these books could actually be this guy's thoughts and memories? That is so strange."
Nov 2, 2022 7:08 pm
Ash, some titles that you see as you're looking around.

Into the Dust
Book of Lies
Moonchild
Eyes of the Child
History
H.P. Lovecraft's Tales of Horror
Donjon Deep
House of Leaves
Cornucopia
Into the Dust
The Key of it All
History
Non-Euclidian Geometry
Seeking Realms Beyond
The Dream Eaters
Dune
Nov 3, 2022 12:17 am
Ash strains his eyes to read the titles and finds his focus returning to one book immediately. "Can it be that easy? Surely not..." He moves over the shelves and pulls the book entitled The Key of it ALL. He opens the book...
Nov 3, 2022 3:48 am
Thumbing through, the Expanded title is "The Key of It All-Book I: An Encyclopedic Guide to the Sacred Languages & Magical Systems of the World"

It's...dry. Even a paragraph is a bit hard to get through.
Nov 6, 2022 1:28 am
Ash flips through the pages of the book and looks over at Cade. "Way too much information to get through at the moment." He says, with a shake of his head.
Nov 6, 2022 8:49 pm
Cade rolls her eyes. "I guess we should keep moving then and check out these other doors." She begins in the library and investigates each of the possible exits from the area.

OOC:
For the door to the left, please see the question in OOC (that I will write directly after this).
To the right is a heavier oak door, something you might see in a historic manor of some kind. Pushing it open reveals quite the scene.
https://tdhdh281.thedarkesthouse.com/public_files/trophyroom-image.jpg
The floor is stone and the room itself is significantly colder than the one you're standing in, the threshold almost seeming to sap the heat. A collection of mounted animal heads covers the wall, the most impressive certainly the magnificent buck.

Across from the buck is a cold fireplace, 2 rifles hanging above it.

Opposite you is another less imposing door.

------------------

There is also a door you couldn't see when you first entered the library. This smaller door opens to an arched stone passage, wind seeming to find its way through cracks in the opposite door. Unlike the previous shadowy hallway, your lights penetrate this one, casting shadows off the uneven stones.
Nov 8, 2022 9:45 pm
Ash stuffs the magic tome into his pack and takes up the pistol in the holster. He follows Cade's lead, as she finds the trophy room. "Well. Its not as bad as I would have imagined in a place like this. There are no human heads mounted on the walls."
Nov 9, 2022 11:02 pm
"Yeah. No doubt." Cade responses and carefully enters the trophy room. She moves over to the smaller door and attempts to open it. "There's a breeze coming from that one over there." She gestures toward the slightly open door.
Nov 10, 2022 7:37 pm
The door to the left of the desk is a faded green door. In places the paint is flaking, especially near the doorframe and the floor. "Green Room" is scrawled on a note and fitted into a name plate that looks more fit for an office.
Nov 11, 2022 7:34 pm
Cade notices the sign and smiles. She looks over her shoulder to Ash and hooks a thumb at the sign. "Wonder if this really is a green room? I didn't bring in my gear and show ensemble." She tries to open the door.
Nov 11, 2022 8:23 pm
The door does in fact open to a familiar Green Room. The first club the two of you played at together, Rumeur. It's one that you went back to occasionally too, even after bigger spaces actually started giving your duo the time of day.

The room is as you remember it. A couple beat up couches in a v shape, a monitor for watching the stage, a tiny bedroom vanity attempting to stand in for a bigger makeup station.

There's a couple doors on the far wall - just barely big enough for the two - which you recall to lead to the stairs to the stage and a small bathroom.
Nov 14, 2022 7:02 am
"No way!" Ash exclaims, as he recognizes the room. "I thought this was some other guy's memories and not ours?" He enters and sits down on one of the two couches.

"How odd." Cade says entering along with Ash. "Not much to look at, but we've had a few good memories in this place..or the place that we remember looking like this."

She sits down on the other couch. "Remember those two groupies we took back into the green room that time? Twins..if I recall correctly."
Nov 20, 2022 8:26 pm
Ash smiles at the remembrance. "Ah..yes. Eva and Ava. Swedish exchange students if I remember correctly." He sighs. "Damn! That was a good night. I never could tell which was which...and it didn't seem to matter to them either."
Nov 23, 2022 9:01 pm
"Fun times indeed." Cade reflects.

After catching her breath in the green room for a few minutes, Cade stands and walks over to the door which she remembers lead to the stage. "Do you think..?" She asks, turning to look over a shoulder to Ash. She tries the door and peeks in.
Nov 25, 2022 7:00 pm
The easiest thing to note in this room is the casket in the middle. Drab, respectful wallpaper and furniture completes the aesthetic. A small table sits on either side of the room, left and right of you. One holds flowers, the other some papers. The casket is currently shut.
There is one further door across from you.
Nov 25, 2022 11:51 pm
Ash, still sitting on the couch, glances to where Cade is investigating the door. "What? What's in there?" He asks her.
Nov 29, 2022 9:00 am
"A coffin." Cade replies. "Guess our memory guy has been to a funeral he remembers."
Nov 29, 2022 6:47 pm
As Cade watches, a procession of mourners begins to file from the opposite door, stopping at the coffin and then moving towards and through the door she's standing at. Despite the coffin being closed, it very much looks like a prefuneral viewing.
Nov 29, 2022 10:21 pm
Acting on reflex, Cade steps to the side of the open doorway as the first mourner closes to where she stands.
Nov 30, 2022 9:33 am
Ash flinches as Cade takes the sudden sidestep. "Wha..?"
OOC:
Can Ash see the mourners?

The mourner passes into the room that you're in and begins to walk away, passing through a wall and vanishing.
Dec 4, 2022 8:18 pm
A chill runs through Cade. She waits for the opportunity and cross to the other door. She turns the knob and tries to open it.
Dec 5, 2022 2:21 am

Just to confirm, this is the door on the other side of the casket room?
Dec 5, 2022 6:06 am
OOC:
Yes.
Dec 6, 2022 8:18 pm
Thankfully the line of mourners is easy enough to predict. They pass through the door at regular intervals.

The door opens to a familiar room. Mounted animal heads line the walls, fireplace, etc. Just seen from the other side.
Dec 7, 2022 10:11 pm
Cade holds up a finger, indicating for Ash to wait a minute. Then enters the trophy room again from this side and attempts to retrace her steps back into the Green Room to see if it is indeed a circle.

Cade, you step into the trophy room, immediately every trophy in the room (walls, floor, tables) begins to hoot and holler. The deer head emits a ghastly roar, elongating with a wet crunching sound. It whips towards Cade like some horrific brown furred snake.
OOC:
Cade! You're in danger. Please roll to avoid a mental attack and a physical attack of 3 and 5 respectively.
Dec 12, 2022 6:32 am
OOC:
Rolls

Rolls

Mental - (2d6+3)

(54) + 3 = 12

Physical - (2d6+5)

(46) + 5 = 15

Dec 23, 2022 7:41 pm
OOC:
Alright, I misspoke, these are attacks with ratings of the stated amounts, so your goal is to get roll + rating above 7 + attack rating.
With Cade's agility that physical dodge would be at a +2 for 11, clearing the 10 needed.
The mental attack however 10 + your base rating of 1 puts you at 11, not enough to match the 15. So you are technically getting hit by it. It's still possible to pull through though.

Please roll the house die once for each of the previous actions.
Then, please also roll 1d6 for getting hit. Specifically this would be 1d6 - your rating + attack rating, or 1d6 + 4. The result is the intensity of the mental wound you take.

Woof, a lot of words. I think I've linked it before, but if you need the reference again it's here.
Dec 27, 2022 9:43 pm
OOC:

I am very confused here.
You stated the mental attack was 3 (7+3=10). Cade's rolls were 5+4+1=10
And the physical attack was 5 (7+5=12). Cade's rolls were 4+6+2=12
She matched both attack rolls.
Dec 30, 2022 6:35 am
OOC:
I flipped them and/or can't add. You can pass into the next room cleanly. Please don't forget to add the house die for each roll.
Cade, other than whatever the hell just happened in the trophy room, your loop around is quiet. Almost eerily so.

Ash, you don't actually hear Cade's footsteps until she re-enters the greenroom, not even as an echo.
Jan 2, 2023 8:18 pm
Ash grins slightly as Cade reappears. His expression immediately changes to one of concern. "Cade? Are you okay? What happened?" He asks her.
Jan 3, 2023 7:02 pm
Cade shakes her head. "Let's keep moving. I don't want to think about it. Let's stay together from now on."

She moves to the other door in the green room and waits until Ash joins her, before entering.
Jan 5, 2023 1:54 am
The pull door doesn't budge. It's almost as if it's just a sculpted part of the wall, the same way a column or molding would be.
Jan 12, 2023 8:02 am
Cade pulls Ash along and tries to backtrack to the library, where she believes she remembers a passage they did not take the first time through.
Jan 12, 2023 8:58 pm

In more narrative games I often hold off on room maps, but I think this room is a shape enough (and the main image is perspective enough) to drop it.
https://tdhdh281.thedarkesthouse.com/public_files/library-map.jpg
OOC:
The left most door is the one you came through initially. Up (characters' left) is the greenroom. Down (characters' right) is the Trophy Room. The door behind the desk has not been entered.
Quote:

Ash, the books you found were along the more hallway bookshelves, since Cade was behind the desk.
Returning to the library, it appears untouched. The door to the Trophy Room stands open from Cade's dash through, but nothing in there seems out of place. The buck head is on the wall unmoving.
Jan 15, 2023 1:22 am
Cade goes over to the unopened door and tries to open it.
Jan 15, 2023 7:34 pm
A short set of stairs leads up into a shadowy hallway. Though your lights work (unlike the last hallway) the shadows they cast on the uneven stone seem to elongate unnaturally unless you focus on them.

The air smells of a cool night's breeze. How.... how long have you been in the house.

There are drag marks here. They don't go anywhere suspicious, just one end of the hall to the other.
Jan 16, 2023 8:15 pm
Ash takes note of the drag marks and points them out.
OOC:
Can we see any doors of passages off the hallway?

You don't see any other than the other end.
Jan 19, 2023 9:14 am
Ash cautiously walks down the hallway to see what's at the other end.
Jan 20, 2023 6:03 am
The heavy stone door here leads out into a walled courtyard. A few bits of brown grass peek from between the stones. It's cold and still. The wind that was causing the draft in the hall blows in the distance.
In the middle of the courtyard stands a statue of a weeping woman, in white stone. Marble maybe.

There are 2 other exits here, both along the wall you entered from. The further is a nearly identical stone door and archway. Between the two arches is a wooden cellar door.

https://tdhdh281.thedarkesthouse.com/public_files/interiorcourtyard-image.jpg
OOC:
Interestingly, this image is from the far side of the courtyard to where the two of you entered. Your entrance is the one that has light coming from it on the left.
Jan 23, 2023 7:19 pm
Cade steps out and waves Ash over, as she glances around them and moves closer to the statue to get a better look at the details. "Wonder if this is supposed to represent anyone in particular?" She whispers and directs her maglight's beam across the ground to the base of the white stone statue.
Jan 23, 2023 7:43 pm
Ash brings up his light joining Cade to look at the statue. "Likely it does. If this place is built on the memories of either this guy we've found evidence of..or us?" He adds with a recollection of the green room.
Jan 23, 2023 9:28 pm
The marble statue itself is stained with age and moisture. The face is covered by the statue's hands, doesn't seem like it was even carved at any point. At the statue's feet is a stone tablet, shattered into pieces
Jan 25, 2023 7:50 pm
Cade focuses her light on the shattered tablet for a few moments to see if thee is anything to be seen on its remains, then moves back across the small courtyard to the other two exits. "Down..?" She points to the cellar door. "..Or the other hallway?"
Jan 25, 2023 9:11 pm
Ash weighs their options. "Let's go for the other hallway first." He answers, with a quick gesture of his lightbeam toward the entrance.
Jan 26, 2023 1:44 am
Before leaving: Cade, the tablet looks like it might once have depicted the sun.
OOC:
I am going to be minimally present for a few days, so I'm proceeding with yall moving into the next room. If that's inaccurate, I'm happy to adjust when I return. Sorry for the break <3

The door opens, a shorter hallway this time, leading to a similarly short set of stairs.

The space is unmistakeable. It's an art gallery. The walls are white marble and your steps echo clearly. Stone pillars line the length, to the side of each painting.

All of the paintings are old, though some appear older than others. Some of the frames look gnawed upon.

The painting of a Man on a Horse is directly across from you when you enter. The next 4 paintings go from right to left - then the next wall has a door - then the remaining 3 - ending at Ash and Cade again.
OOC:
Honor's system here, but if you don't head into the gallery, you don't see these obvs.

Ash takes his time studying the paintings. "Creepy shit." He says. "Looks like they were all painted in the same style and perhaps by the same person." He gestures toward the last one - the empty frame. "Guess we're supposed to fill that in?"

"Oh.." He hooks a thumb back to the child without eyes. "Doesn't that one look like that weird kid in that television commercial?"

"Yeah. It does." She agrees on the appearance of the weird kid in the painting. "Let's try something. Come over here and let's both touch the blank wall inside the empty frame together, Okay?"

She moves closer to the frame and awaits Ash. "On a count of three...One...Two.."
Feb 4, 2023 9:34 pm
"Sure. Alright." Ash positions himself and readies his hand. "..Three." He places his hand flat to the empty space inside the frame, timing it with Cade's.
Feb 4, 2023 9:47 pm
The wind blows in from the courtyard, the door slamming open.

...

Nothing.
Feb 6, 2023 9:15 pm
"Well, that was exciting." Cade says sarcastically and takes her hand away from the wall. "I wish we were playing a set at the club right now. This place is nothing like I imagined it would be."
