Verin will wander over to look at the partially illuminated runes, and attempt to determine what language they're in. As she does so, she replies to the Professor, "The problem with history, is often the gaps in it. You have to figure out what sources you can trust, especially when trying to fill in the blanks... that said, locals often have insight because of the history that was passed down through the generations. Since the kobolds seemed to have known enough about these markings to be afraid of them... perhaps someone should ask them what the stories say."

With that, she looks over her shoulder directly at S'sylin before returning to trying to make heads or tales of the script.

"I'm not sure how old this sword is. All I know is it's been handed down in my mother's tribe for many years. I wouldn't doubt if it has something to do with the silver flame or the demons that it stands against."

OOC:
I'm hoping I'm done with fifteen and twenty hours days for now. I don't mind the work, but I do mind not sleeping.

There are going to be a few notes in these next few posts. Obviously its info only you know based on your actions. Sharing it or not is up to you.
Falconloft sent a note to Gnellson
Alacandra nods approvingly at Verin. "Right as always, Ms. Moore. If there's someone who they understand and trust, it might help to ask about their myths or religious stories." She examines the sword along with Laaesh. "Yes. I can see why the Silver Flame would have wanted it. These are protection and banishment runes on the hilt. That magic is probably far too old to use ever again, but the Silver Flame is very taken with their good luck charms."

"I can speak their tongue." S'sylin offered as he emerged from behind a pillar where he had tactically retreated with the others who valued their scales.
"...Although I should add, the locals are quick to jump to conclusions. And I doubt they have a full grasp of what is going on here either."

"Actually professor, it seems that the sword has been reawakening it didn't glow before."

Professor Alacandra
"Interesting. Similar magic perhaps in the sword and the runes. That could bear further study."

She turns to S'sylin. "Well, don't just stand there. wrong answers are better than none."

Reporting to the group what I see of the sword. It's a drowish sword. It has faint runes similar to the ones we're seeing here. But I can't make out their meaning.

S'sylin, ask the kobolds if they were ever allied with the Drow.
Mar 7, 2023 4:37 pm
S'sylin was mulling over what the kobolds had already told him when Laaesh came with his demands. The black dragonborn frowned at him for the impertinence. Still, the question was a decent one. Thus he turned to the nearest clutter of kobolds.

Giant: "When your ancestors first came here, were there drow with you? Black elves?"
Mar 9, 2023 3:32 pm
There's a good amount of muttering that washes through the gathered kobolds before one turns back to answer him. "There are some who believe that we were put here by a shadow people who once enslaved us, but that they died when the world was sundered and the great fire was lost. But why do you speak of the shadows?"
Mar 11, 2023 4:54 pm
"They were enslaved by 'shadow people'. Sounds like Drow rather than giants." S'sylin threw back at Laaesh.
He then turned back to his scaly little friends. He decided to talk in small words so their dimunitive brains would understand..
"We are figuring out the magic of the giant of ice. Do you know if it was left by the shadow people?"
Mar 16, 2023 5:19 pm
"Was it not left by you, oh Lord Dragon?" Their faith in their beliefs is strong, but you sense that if you say the wrong thing, their faith in you might falter. And when that happens, they'll have to figure out why you aren't who they think you said you were. There's probably no good outcome there.

Alacandra seems to feel it too. "We'd better figure something out. But I can't help you to much, or you'll invalidate your grade. What I can do, though, is to listen to your ideas and rule the worst of them out."
Mar 16, 2023 8:10 pm
Since we are not willing to complete the rune phrase, we could set it to something completely nonsensical.
Maybe?
I'm going to look over here.

I inspect the runes by one of the wall switches.
Mar 18, 2023 12:51 pm
"This creature was meant to fight another, correct? It seems that the Kobolds don't want either to be released though. Can we just leave them be an investigate further in this direction?"
Mar 19, 2023 7:55 pm
S'sylin made sure to keep a regal pose as he turned to Alacandra to keep up appearances.
"I could say the Drow left the guardian, and they are my enemies, and I've come to free them of the elemental?"
Mar 28, 2023 9:29 pm
Laaesh recognizes the runes as being the same ones on the floor near the elemental back at the center of the kobold settlement. It doesn't take much to come to the conclusion that if the floor matches the switches, something will happen. Whatever that is, it is true that the kobolds don't want it to happen, but from talking to them, every kobold family has its own version of events.

While Laaesh and Rythorn are so engaged, S'sylin talks the matter over with the Professor. She agrees that the approach is solid from an anthropological standpoint, but they should be careful not to make the kobolds expect much until they know for sure what the results will be. "When the time comes, cooperation from the kobolds will be essential. But kobolds are flighty. If we begin to encourage them in the wrong direction, even unknowingly, it might be hard to get them back in line for something else."

All this time, Verin has been studying the text on the wall. Much of it is an ancient giantish dialect, but in one section, scrawled in between the larger runes, is something that looks like Elvish. The syntax is odd, but she manages to make out the greater part of it... or at least what seems to be the translation...

We develop elements by feeding to them the powerful crystals of energy. When they grow up, they escape it and bring itself to the river which opens upon them. The elements when mixed will be of the city center of destruction. We run away from chaos.

"I may have found something," Verin announces.

"We develop elements by feeding to them the powerful crystals of energy. When they grow up, they escape it and bring itself to the river which opens upon them. The elements when mixed will be of the city center of destruction. We run away from chaos."

Verin cocks her head, putting her hands on her hips and reading it again.

"It's like someone was making notes in the margin."
Mar 29, 2023 7:20 pm
"Something like charging up that elemental inside? Sounds like some further evidence that we don't want to let it out."
Apr 1, 2023 7:26 pm
"Not unless we grow very tired of the local city, indeed...." S'sylin mocked. He looked over at the elemental. "...and ourselves."

The professor, clearly an individual more experienced with the practical applications of their trade, made some good points. S'sylin did want to keep the kobolds friendly, and for more reasons than just to deal with the elemental mystery. The little ones were on edge and easily startled, that much was true. Placating them would come first. So he turned to them once more and spoke to them in Giant with some believable tale.
"It was my ancestors who came here." He lied. "While I live many kobold lives, this was left by my great-great fathers. The dragons of old warred with the black elves. The giant of ice was a weapon! It would destroy the enemies of dragons and kobolds and would raze the cities of giants! But now it is old and broken. Dangerous to us all. I will save us all from it, but we need to be careful or it will awaken and slay many of us before it is stopped. These other surface-dwellers will unravel its mysteries together with me."
Apr 3, 2023 6:15 pm
The reaction to S'sylin's speech is uncertain at first, but then a very ancient kobold steps forward, his head full of piercings and bangles. He nods at S'sylin's story. He speaks in a form of draconic. "What he says is true. It matches the old stories, the ones passed down by the priesthood. We will help you if we can. But how will you remove it without it awakening?"
Apr 4, 2023 9:36 pm
S'sylin glanced at the giant elemental. How indeed? All he knew was some of the basics around elementals..
"It is an elemental, from another plane of existence. It was likely summoned here by strong magic. Perhaps it can be banished back to whence it came."
