[1] The Lower Road

Nov 9, 2022 7:37 pm
You're forced to stay one more night in the infirmary - although there's not much force about it; you're weary enough that the rest is welcome. The next morning, one of the locals comes to collect you and take you to the complex that's been discovered. It's hidden behind a huge fallen stone that's been hewn out to form a storefront. Behind it, the moss and vines have been pulled aside to reveal a small stone door - much too small for a giant to use. It must be a workers' entrance, and you're again reminded of the giants' dark past. They for centuries forced their drow slaves to build vast underground complexes like this one. Their original purpose is lost to antiquity.

Perhaps you'll find out why this one was built.

As you step into the tunnel, you're met with damp, stale air that's slightly too warm to be comfortable. The stone walls curve slightly inward before meeting the ceiling. Vines hang down between the stonework above you like living stalactites. Some even reach the floor where they've begun to spread out and creep along the ground. Two side passages are blocked by stones that would take weeks to move, but the central corridor is clear.

Occasionally the passageway narrows slightly and elven engravings decorate the makeshift dividing lines. Two sections down, the corridor appears to branch off again.

Professor Alacandra
Before you can do more than have a brief look around, Professor Alacandra informs you, "I'm going to see if I can figure out how to safely move some of these rocks. Go ahead and explore the available section of the ruins for now. Come back when you've gone as far as you can, or if you need help."

I do

Cualli translates the elven words outloud
Nov 11, 2022 3:50 pm
With the corridor lit up better, you can make out more of the words. That is to say, you can make out that there are more words. The elvish script is more... spiky than flowing, which makes sense as it was carved, not written, but some of the phrases don't really make any sense. It's in an ancient dialect that you've never seen before. The lines you do understand seem more like personal expressions than a historical record or warding incantation.

It has been ten years and I still have not ????? more than once.
This area(?) belongs to Nyzik, the ????? of all his group.
Soon we will find the ????? and then the giants will all have death continuing.
(Maybe that means forever?)

It looks like the tunnelling further on is of a different style. Maybe the drow were searching for something here that they didn't want the giants to know about.
Nov 11, 2022 10:42 pm
"Sounds like gibberish to me. Maybe personal scrawlings or something meaningful to the previous inhabitants. Let's head on and see if things become more clear." Rythorn proceeds down the corridor, careful to keep within the light.
Nov 12, 2022 11:43 pm
Oh come on Rythorn, this is interesting! These words were carved in by the elves who made these tunnels, But I feel like I'm missing some of the most important words. Like, what could an elf not do more than once in ten years? Break Wind? Make Love? Take a rest?

And who is Nyzik? Was he the messiest of all his group? or maybe the wealthiest. Perhaps he was a practical joker and we are about to walk into a room full of whoopee coushins. Who knows?

But listen, that third line about the whatever it is that's going to cause death everlasting to the giants? Like, well, I mean, I haven't seen any giants around. Have you? Whatever it is, I think they mighta found it. and you know what else, If they found it, then that means that we can find it. And that sounds like some bona fide grade A magic treasure to me.

Rythorn stops and waits for his companion. "Yeah, it's interesting. The thing is the important bits are left out. It's good to keep this in mind, but I doubt we'll be solving any riddles without finding something more complete."
Nov 14, 2022 3:46 pm
As you progress down the hallway and come level with what appears to be the next intersection of tunnels, it becomes clearer that these are just small rooms off to either side. The thinner interior walls have long since fallen down, leaving only the thick stones of the tunnel walls in place.

Suddenly, a gout of flame rushes out from a small hole in the wall. Before anyone can react, the flame engulfs you and knocks you off your feet. It seems - appearances to the contrary - that there is something down here that someone did not want to be rediscovered.
OOC:
Small note: This is not quite how the book runs things, but I am trying to adjust this rule for a smoother pbp experience. I am going to assume that you're keeping an eye out for traps, but instead of having each of you roll for something that you might not even known is there, I'm going to roll against your passive perception (Perception + 10) If your score is higher than the roll, you have seen the trap and can avoid it. If it's lower, it's going to hit you. If your score is equal to twice the roll, you can pull one additional person out of danger as well! The bonus to the roll will the traps Spot DC -10. So if you'd normally need to roll a 15 to spot a trap, I'll be rolling 1d20+5.

For this trap, the same will apply to any checks to get out of the way of the trap. It'll be the trap's roll, vs your passive agility (Agi + 10). I realize that some don't like dice being rolled for them, so if there's changes that need to be made to this, please let me know in the OOC chat and we'll figure something else out.
Once you've pulled yourselves together, the tunnel splits in half further on down.

Wow! Maybe this area belonged to Nyzik the toastiest of his group!

Here I have an idea. Let's just assume everything is trapped . I don't like the look of those vines. Lash can you help with a little light? Watch this.

Cualli takes a pinch of alchemical powder and some forest moss from his pocket and puts it in his mouth. He chews it up and spits a little wet mound of it into his hand. He rubs it into his palm with his thumb until he sees the largest heaviest rock he can find. He rubs the concoction onto the surface of the stone and sends it down the hallway ahead of them like a bowling ball, when it gets as far as he can send it, it begins to levitate into the "living vines" in the ceiling.

Let's see what happens.
[ +- ] Levitate (cantrip) (Int)
Nov 16, 2022 7:25 pm
The vines themselves aren't living in the sense that Cualli probably is cautious of, but they are hiding something more sinister - another set of traps. As the stone pushes through the vines, they drag along the floor and trigger the mechanism hidden there. This time, two flames are thrown out from the corners of the inset hallway. The vines are immolated before the fire shuts off. That trick probably won't work again - it's too dependent on the vines - but maybe it can give you clues as to how to check for traps, or where.

The hallway is clear to the split. The left side of the split is filled with webshe other side is clearly a work area, with rotted workbenches and shelves full of long-turned-to-dust items and rusted machinery.

With Cualli in the lead with his wealth of wariness, he is able to note that there are doors set into the ceiling here. There's a mechanism between the doors that probably should allow you to adjust them somehow, but it's just one lever - it's not clear how that would work.
Nov 16, 2022 7:46 pm
I can try that lever from a safer distance if you guys want me to.
Nov 16, 2022 8:12 pm
"Might be best," Verin agrees. "I'd hate to die before we find the good stuff."
Nov 16, 2022 8:55 pm
"I would prefer to stay alive after we find it as well." Rythorn notes. "Keeping our distance sounds smart to me."
Nov 16, 2022 8:58 pm
Okay. With everyone well back from the ceiling doors,
Here goes.
I use Mage Hand and push the lever forward.
Nov 16, 2022 9:22 pm
The suspense is killing me....
Nov 21, 2022 9:52 pm
The lever moves, but nothing happens. The system is ancient after all.

But just as you're about to give up on it as out of repair, something behind the wall moves with a thunk, and then the sound of gears spinning follows. The right door grumbles down from the ceiling and settles in place with a small explosion of dust that's been kicked out of the way by its weight. The lever might work again, but you'll have to wait to find out, because the noise has awakened something, and you hear a tik... tikytiky-tik-tik-tik as more feet than you have begin to move on the stonework inside the left branch of the passage.
Nov 21, 2022 10:20 pm
Drawing her trusted rapier, Verin puts a back to the wall. "Why," she grumbles, "can't we just open a door and find an obscene amount of gold, some magic stuff, and a Big Book of Lost Secrets so we can get an A and go home? It's always something..."
Nov 21, 2022 10:21 pm
Refreshing our light here. "callalantroupe" Lash re-casts Dancing Lights then moves to the opposite wall and readies his cross bow.
Nov 22, 2022 12:40 am
"It doesn't seem to be the fate for our type to have it easy." Rythorn draws his well-worn longsword and speaks to it. A blue glow eminates from the blade and fills the area around him. "As always, observe caution. We don't know what we're dealing with yet."

OOC:
My apologies for the extended delay. The holidays threw all of my scheduling off.
As Laaesh reinvigorates his light, the creature making the otherworldly echoes on the stone comes into view, slowly extricating itself from its hole. It looks like the spider had grown a bit bigger than the hallway it had made its nest. Or perhaps, just perhaps, it had swollen up bigger from decay and rot after it died - not that its death seemed to bother it overly much. You get a good look into the interior of its dead carcass - dried out flesh and encrusted blood - as it raises itself to its full height, front legs searching for... what? Is it possible it couldn't see you? It doesn't directly attack at any rate.
OOC:
How do you want to handle this? An attack is certainly possible, and given the fact that you've prepared, I'd let you take your actions first. But if it really cannot see you, there are probably other options available as well.
Nov 30, 2022 1:52 am
Rythorn raises his hand in a gesture saying "Hold on". He moves close to Laaesh and whispers as to not be hear far off. "Would you be able to cause some sort of noise on the other side of the creature? It seems unaware of us as of yet. We might be able to use that in our favor."
Nov 30, 2022 4:19 am
I nod affirmative but I'm concerned that I have to speak my incantation. It's worth the risk.
Rumbeloqist
Using thaumaturgy, I start some tremors in the hallway behind the creature. They will continue for a minute. The spell has only the voice component so I keep my crossbow ready.
Nov 30, 2022 11:49 pm
The long-dead spider pauses for a moment, uncertain whether it heard - or more likely felt anything. But then the rumbling starts behind it, and it turns, quicker than you would have thought possible... quicker than you could have reacted to had it decided to leap at you... and slides back into the passage that it came from, heading for the phantom sound.

Now's your chance to do something while it's distracted, but you know it will probably be back, and soon.

Here goes nothin'
With the spider turned back into the tunnel Cualli comes out from his hiding spot and just runs for it to pull the switch.
Dec 8, 2022 8:54 pm
Cualli dashes toward the switch, intent on flipping it back to close the door on the spider-thing, but his movement isn't quiet. The spider whirls and skitters back toward the door. One leg reaches out to wrap around Cualli's leg, but as he feels himself start to lose his balance, he manages to pull the lever.

The door slams down on the spider's leg, just before more of him can get out of his tunnel. Cualli's leg is released as the spider tries to pull its leg free. It twitches erratically but it seems that for now, it's stuck.

The other thing that happens when the lever is pulled is that the other side of the passage opens up again. The room on this side is ancient, full of crumbling scrolls and rusted bits of metal that were probably meant to be pieces of machinery at some point in the distant past.

At the other end of the room is another door, and a lever next to it that presumably works just the same as the previous one.

Investigation is going to be the skill that's used. I said search out of familiarity.

Investigation. When you look around for clues and make deductions based on those clues, you make an Intelligence (Investigation) check. You might deduce the location of a hidden object, discern from the appearance of a wound what kind of weapon inflicted it, or determine the weakest point in a tunnel that could cause it to collapse. Poring through ancient scrolls in search of a hidden fragment of knowledge might also call for an Intelligence (Investigation) check.
Dec 10, 2022 8:26 pm
Cualli jumps out of the radius of the spider thing's arm and brushes at his own leg. Yuck. I can still feel it touching me.

He composes himself and stands next to Lash peering down the second passage.

I think I might see something interesting over there with those bits of machinery, Do you see it?

Cualli points towards a thing in the machinery
OOC:
Cualli has pretty good investigation, I'm willing to look or give a buff if that's allowed.
Dec 12, 2022 4:07 am
Verin skirts around the twitching spider leg, and takes in the room full of what was, once upon a time, probably fascinating things.

Now though? It looks like a sneeze could destroy it all... and this room is dusty.

I think you're right. That does deserve some investigation.

Alas, the vast majority of the items in this room crumble at the slightest breeze, so when Laaesh moves past them, there's a slow flurry of ancient parchments that soon cover the floor. Ah well. At least the machinery is still here. It looks like the sort of gears you'd see in a children's puzzle toy back in Sharn, but at a larger scale. There is one design that survives as well, but only because it was etched into the desk underneath. It appears to be a magical lattice of some sort, but more than that cannot be determined because of the crudeness of the sketch.
Dec 14, 2022 1:35 am
"Laaesh, is there anything worth gathering? I sense that we should continue our progress. Rythorn shifts his weight back and forth as he scans around the area.
Dec 14, 2022 2:01 am
There's something here about a lattice workings but I don't understand it. I think we need to just move on.
Dec 15, 2022 1:01 am
Could be like a net or something. Or a web? Could have something to do with our neighbor over there. All I know is if I see another one of those things, I'm using magic, I mean fighting stuff with magik is like half of what you learn in alchemy.

Cualli pulls out a tin that contains a combination of chewing tobacco and alchemical powders that give the tobacco an amber glow. He tucks a little wad of it under his lip.

I agree, let's press on, but let's also keep our eyes peeled, this place could be crawling with spider things or traps or who knows what.

"Let's try and survey our surroundings before pulling any more levers if we can."

Rythorn raises his sword and pushes onward into the cavern.
Dec 16, 2022 3:30 am
A hand on the hilt of her rapier, Verin follows the group further in.

As she walks, she quietly calls out, "Hellooooo, priceless ancient artifacts, where are you?"
Dec 19, 2022 5:37 pm
The way further into the cavern requires the pulling of that lever at the other end of the room, but thankfully, all it does is open the door. As you file into the cavern, your footsteps echo back off the smoothly carved walls, and the floor--

The floor is a vast, shimmering sheet of ice. It stretches for at least a hundred feet in front of you and forms a massive square, crisscrossed by stone every ten feet or so. At the other end of the ice is a large bell, and inset along the two side walls are two levers on each side. Each has a differently colored crystal above it: purple, pink, orange, and blue.

Below the ice, you can see glimpses of something else, but the ice makes it difficult to ascertain what it could be.
Dec 19, 2022 10:39 pm
Lash mumbles his sentiment, I'm still regretting the choice of this "complex" instead of the "under-the-tavern" option.
Then offers a suggestion.
Guys, instead of guessing about levers and colored crystals,
how about an arrow-shot to ring that bell?
Dec 20, 2022 12:31 am
"That would be quite the shot. Think you can make it?"

Rythorn crouches and holds his sword near the ice as he speaks, trying to make out what's below the ice.
Dec 20, 2022 12:35 am
"Worth a try at least," Verin adds, encouraging Lash.

Looking to Ry, she asks, "what do you think is down there?"
Dec 20, 2022 12:39 am
"I'm not sure, hopefully not something hostile. I'm watching to see if it moves." He turns his head to look at Verin, "How thick does this ice look to you?"

The ice is solid. It's probably at least 10 feet thick. Probably more, if we're honest about it. But not for long...

Laaesh takes aim and fires at the bell. It makes a very small, very hollow tong. And then Cualli remembers his Alchemical Architecture lessons and realizes what's about to happen. He's able to jump to part of the stone grid just in time, and warn the others so that they too can move.

The ring echoes around the room, off the smooth stone and the sheer ice. And every time it does, it grows louder.

The ice suddenly cracks, splintering under your feet, and then shatters, falling the thirty feet or so down to the floor below.

They splash down into the middle of an underground spring, one that's now full of magical ice and rapidly cooling. They're probably going to want to get out of there quick.

Dec 29, 2022 5:28 pm
Cualli gets in the center of his stone walkway and gets low in order to not present any target to the kobolds below. He begins crawling along the walkway and towards the center of the room. From here he plans to look around now that the ice is melted to see if he can see anything corresponding to the crystals on the wall. Maybe something on the interior of the center square?
Dec 30, 2022 7:06 pm
"Perhaps they will respond better to a fellow draconic person." S'sylin offered. He held his large cudgel on his shoulder and stepped forward, giving the kobolds a clear view of his mighty dragonborn form.

"Well, do you speak my language?" he asked of the kobolds.
If that does not work, he asks the same in Giant, the ancient dominant language of the continent.
Jan 4, 2023 5:24 pm
The kobolds don't respond to the first question, but they do to the second. They respond a bit too well, really. They go from being standoff-ish to absolutely enamored with S'sylin, bowing down to him and offering him some of the food they'd been preparing, chattering away all the while. Their speech isn't quite Giantish, but it's close.

This keeps them busy enough to let Cualli examine his surroundings for more markings. There are none in the center of the square, but down below, where the others are crawling out of the water, there are markings on the walls, and they seem to be of the same sort as those on the levers above. It's hard to see if they match exactly though.
OOC:

Jan 7, 2023 12:34 am
Pleased with his new servants, even if they didn't seem to be the best cooks, nor very hygienic, S'sylin decided to find out more from them.

"Good. I assume you live nearby? Tell me what you know of this place."
Jan 10, 2023 4:40 pm
@gnellson - The light is actually a lot better than it has any business being, and you can't see a source for it.

@majunior @trustyjustin - The symbols top and bottom seem to all be of the same style, but only two sets of them match. For one set, the matching levers seem to already be pulled, which would account for the kobold's hallway being open already. The other matching set hasn't been touched.

The kobolds respond again - still in Giantish. "We have lived in the Halls of Winter for all our lives and all our ancestors lives, and all the lives of our ancestors' ancestors. We guard the Sentinel of Frost, and wait for his awakening. When he awakens, we must battle him while our elders find a way to put him back to sleep. And now that you have come from the heavens above the ice, the time is nigh!"

There are cheers all around at the last of these proclamations, and they echo down the hall behind them as the story spreads. From the sounds of the cheers, there's at least a thousand or so back there.

I'm not hiding what they're saying under the assumption that S'sylin has no motive to hide the conversation. If there's anything you aren't going to share, just say specify what that would be.

Cualli pulls out a small pencil from his bag of alchemical things. The lead gives the glint of graphite and magic. He draws on the ground and in front of S'Sylin appears an illuminated message written at his feet.

The Dark Dragonborn looked past the kobolds in front of him, listening to the cacaphony. Indeed, it seemed he had gained a great many potential servants. He did wonder what the time was nigh for though. He noted the scribbling of his felow student, and with a sigh he decided to acquiesce.
Giant: "My smooth-skinned companion wishes to know what is beyond that door over there, with the levers.."
Jan 16, 2023 3:06 pm
This request ignites a furor amongst the kobolds. All at once several voices ring out in answer.

"No! Do not touch the levers!"
"The allies of evil will awaken!"
"Our doom is upon us!"

The lead kobold - or at least the one that's less in awe of you than the others - speaks up again. "Truth be told, we do not know even that there is a door, although if your wisdom says there is, then obviously it is true. But our prophecies say that our great enemies may someday be released to help the Sentinel of Frost."

A few of the kobolds grab ahold of S'sylin's hands, trying to lead him down the passageway. "Come away from the temptation of evil machinery. Come look upon the Sentinel's tomb and regain your resolve."
OOC:
If it's not entirely clear - hopefully it is - the kobolds would love your assistance with this battle they're apparently supposed to fight now that you've shown up. That doesn't mean you have to, obviously, but it's what they want, and it might make friends down here. On the other hand, making friends sounds like it could make enemies as well. Is there anything you can do to find out more before going ahead? Or do you know all you need to know already?
Jan 16, 2023 5:06 pm
Most pleased with winning some allies thanks to his deft diplomacy, S'sylin led himself be guided down the passageway. He called back to the others.
"Leave the levers! Come! We should see this 'sentinel of frost' my new friends have battled for generations for ourselves!"
Jan 16, 2023 5:21 pm
"Oh yay," Verin mutters. "More cold."

Rythorn will lower himself down to the sublevel and follow as the last person into the corridor after the kobolds.
Jan 20, 2023 11:16 pm
Following the kobolds, you're led deeper into the tunnels, past untold generations worth of decayed detritus and the abandoned accumulation of the eternity that the kobolds have been trapped unnoticed below the rest of the world. Tattered canvases look as though they'd crumble to dust if they were touched as they hang loosely in front of the tiny insets that the diminutive lizard-people unwillingly inherited from the drow - the only semblance of privacy they've ever had. But these slums are their homes. You pass several communal kitchens where rust monsters and slugworms are rotisseried above open flame, and you can't help but wonder how they could have lasted down here so long.

Finally, you come to a stop in front of a set of huge stone doors that reach at least twenty feet high - clearly gaintish construction. One of the two doors is open a few feet, and you're ushered inside. On the other side of the door, dormant arcane circuits are etched into the floor, but the patterns are seemingly broken or incomplete. In the center of the floor is a magic barrier of some kind, and inside it is an ice elemental that stands nearly as tall as the doors. It is frozen in place, probably by the barrier.

But as you study it, one icy blue eye - over the course of a minute - turns to lock onto you.

"Oh.... definitely their enemy." S'sylin replied nonchalantly as he went over the ward's patterns, making sure not to touch any.

Laaesh discovers - with some time and study - that the circuit is complete, it's just out of place. Someone has, at some point in the far past, actually picked up some of the 200-pound stones and exchanged their places on the floor. The question is why? And the answer is obvious. Someone never wanted that circuit completed. So should you complete it now? You've heard stories of spells that had to be finished to be dispelled. But you've also seen what can happen if spells that were never meant to be used are used. The Mournland anyone?

He certainly had the strength to move the stones, but not knowing what would happen when one completed such a large ritualistic spell did give him ample pause. With your minds made up, you begin to head back out, with S'sylin explaining that you must seek guidance on the matter (however you want to explain that). This does not sit well with all of the kobolds, however, and by the time you've reached the entrance to their tunnels, there is a veritable horde of tiny lizard-people surrounding you, yelling and cursing not only you but also each other. When you try to begin climbing back up, looking for handholds or some other way to get back up (Acrobatics/Environment check, DC 12), they begin pelting you with tiny stones, fish bones, and other pieces of trash. Everyone manages to haul themselves up - everything other than Rythorn that is, who's knocked down by a well-placed rock hitting his hand as he tries to grab a handhold. As the rest of the group reaches the upper level of the caves and relative safety, Rythorn is quickly surrounded by a circle of spear-wielding kobolds. "We keep this one to make sure you come back!" One of the kobolds pokes him rather unnecessarily, and does it hard enough to hurt. "Otherwise, we stab!"

You're able to make it back to Professor Alacandra with little issue, and quickly explain the situation to her. Clearly worried about the student who didn't make it back, she pauses her work and heads back with you. "We'll soon put those creatures in their place! Show me where they are!"

Rythorn draws his sword out completely and attempts to read the runes under its light.

Under the light of Rythorn's sword the runes begin to light up, one by one. The stone around the doorway shakes, and even up above you can feel it as the dust shakes from the walls, probably amplifying Cualli's fears about unnoticed traps. You arrive back at the kobolds' gate as the runes are halfway lit up.

Professor Alacandra is visibly alarmed. "Someone get him away from that gate. If it's not too late already. We have no idea what those runes are set to do."

The kobolds appear to have more knowledge though, even if they have far less sense. As the middle rune begins to glow, they start to mill about, screaming and running in every direction, so they clearly understand something, or think they do.

OOC:
Well, I am alive, if only just barely.
Professor Alacandra
Rythorn puts his sword away, and the runes' glow stops progressing. It does not, however, recede. What is more, the levers you found earlier that seemed to match are also both glowing a little, one up on top and one down below. The kobolds have, at this point, given up on everything but cowering on their side of the open area, back behind the pillars that are holding up their tunnels. Their muted whispers and pointing are enough to make anyone just as nervous as they are.

Professor Alacandra is a bit more reserved in her judgment at first. Then she sees the opportunity to turn this into a learning experience. She raises her hands, waiting for all to calm down. When the kobolds have quieted a bit, she gathers you all around. "Many times when exploring old civilizations, we come upon dangerous, unknown things. This is part of why your training semester was to take place here. I could give you the solution to this - or at least one step of it; some things are as unknown to me as they are to you - but you would be better served by figuring as much of this out yourself. I will guide you through the steps you should take, but you must answer the questions that arise and make the final decisions.

"The first question is, 'Is everything as it seems it is?' I believe we can now tell, thanks to Rythorn and his sword, that things are not. So now we have to answer, 'If things are not really as they seem, what is being hidden?' Often times the past hides the answers to that question. How can we determine what the past is hiding? What do you think?"

She turns to Rythorn. "And why would your sword be reacting to runes on a wall?"

As she does so, she replies to the Professor, "The problem with history, is often the gaps in it. You have to figure out what sources you can trust, especially when trying to fill in the blanks... that said, locals often have insight because of the history that was passed down through the generations. Since the kobolds seemed to have known enough about these markings to be afraid of them... perhaps someone should ask them what the stories say."

With that, she looks over her shoulder directly at S'sylin before returning to trying to make heads or tales of the script.

Mar 6, 2023 9:01 pm
Reporting to the group what I see of the sword. It's a drowish sword. It has faint runes similar to the ones we're seeing here. But I can't make out their meaning.

S'sylin, ask the kobolds if they were ever allied with the Drow.
Mar 7, 2023 4:37 pm
S'sylin was mulling over what the kobolds had already told him when Laaesh came with his demands. The black dragonborn frowned at him for the impertinence. Still, the question was a decent one. Thus he turned to the nearest clutter of kobolds.

Giant: "When your ancestors first came here, were there drow with you? Black elves?"
Mar 9, 2023 3:32 pm
There's a good amount of muttering that washes through the gathered kobolds before one turns back to answer him. "There are some who believe that we were put here by a shadow people who once enslaved us, but that they died when the world was sundered and the great fire was lost. But why do you speak of the shadows?"
Mar 11, 2023 4:54 pm
"They were enslaved by 'shadow people'. Sounds like Drow rather than giants." S'sylin threw back at Laaesh.
He then turned back to his scaly little friends. He decided to talk in small words so their dimunitive brains would understand..
"We are figuring out the magic of the giant of ice. Do you know if it was left by the shadow people?"
Mar 16, 2023 5:19 pm
"Was it not left by you, oh Lord Dragon?" Their faith in their beliefs is strong, but you sense that if you say the wrong thing, their faith in you might falter. And when that happens, they'll have to figure out why you aren't who they think you said you were. There's probably no good outcome there.

Alacandra seems to feel it too. "We'd better figure something out. But I can't help you to much, or you'll invalidate your grade. What I can do, though, is to listen to your ideas and rule the worst of them out."
Mar 16, 2023 8:10 pm
Since we are not willing to complete the rune phrase, we could set it to something completely nonsensical.
Maybe?
I'm going to look over here.

I inspect the runes by one of the wall switches.
Mar 18, 2023 12:51 pm
"This creature was meant to fight another, correct? It seems that the Kobolds don't want either to be released though. Can we just leave them be an investigate further in this direction?"
Mar 19, 2023 7:55 pm
S'sylin made sure to keep a regal pose as he turned to Alacandra to keep up appearances.
"I could say the Drow left the guardian, and they are my enemies, and I've come to free them of the elemental?"
Mar 28, 2023 9:29 pm
Laaesh recognizes the runes as being the same ones on the floor near the elemental back at the center of the kobold settlement. It doesn't take much to come to the conclusion that if the floor matches the switches, something will happen. Whatever that is, it is true that the kobolds don't want it to happen, but from talking to them, every kobold family has its own version of events.

While Laaesh and Rythorn are so engaged, S'sylin talks the matter over with the Professor. She agrees that the approach is solid from an anthropological standpoint, but they should be careful not to make the kobolds expect much until they know for sure what the results will be. "When the time comes, cooperation from the kobolds will be essential. But kobolds are flighty. If we begin to encourage them in the wrong direction, even unknowingly, it might be hard to get them back in line for something else."

All this time, Verin has been studying the text on the wall. Much of it is an ancient giantish dialect, but in one section, scrawled in between the larger runes, is something that looks like Elvish. The syntax is odd, but she manages to make out the greater part of it... or at least what seems to be the translation...

We develop elements by feeding to them the powerful crystals of energy. When they grow up, they escape it and bring itself to the river which opens upon them. The elements when mixed will be of the city center of destruction. We run away from chaos.

"I may have found something," Verin announces.

"We develop elements by feeding to them the powerful crystals of energy. When they grow up, they escape it and bring itself to the river which opens upon them. The elements when mixed will be of the city center of destruction. We run away from chaos."

Verin cocks her head, putting her hands on her hips and reading it again.

"It's like someone was making notes in the margin."
Mar 29, 2023 7:20 pm
"Something like charging up that elemental inside? Sounds like some further evidence that we don't want to let it out."
Apr 1, 2023 7:26 pm
"Not unless we grow very tired of the local city, indeed...." S'sylin mocked. He looked over at the elemental. "...and ourselves."

The professor, clearly an individual more experienced with the practical applications of their trade, made some good points. S'sylin did want to keep the kobolds friendly, and for more reasons than just to deal with the elemental mystery. The little ones were on edge and easily startled, that much was true. Placating them would come first. So he turned to them once more and spoke to them in Giant with some believable tale.
"It was my ancestors who came here." He lied. "While I live many kobold lives, this was left by my great-great fathers. The dragons of old warred with the black elves. The giant of ice was a weapon! It would destroy the enemies of dragons and kobolds and would raze the cities of giants! But now it is old and broken. Dangerous to us all. I will save us all from it, but we need to be careful or it will awaken and slay many of us before it is stopped. These other surface-dwellers will unravel its mysteries together with me."
Apr 3, 2023 6:15 pm
The reaction to S'sylin's speech is uncertain at first, but then a very ancient kobold steps forward, his head full of piercings and bangles. He nods at S'sylin's story. He speaks in a form of draconic. "What he says is true. It matches the old stories, the ones passed down by the priesthood. We will help you if we can. But how will you remove it without it awakening?"
Apr 4, 2023 9:36 pm
S'sylin glanced at the giant elemental. How indeed? All he knew was some of the basics around elementals..
"It is an elemental, from another plane of existence. It was likely summoned here by strong magic. Perhaps it can be banished back to whence it came."

If you want the kobolds to have done anything for you, they tried. Roll a straight d20 and on a 6+ what they did for you worked out. Five or lower it didn't.
With the semblance of a plan, you all head back to the chamber that holds the elemental. It still stands there, immobile, waiting. But as you look around the chamber again, one eye slowly opens. Whatever happened out there in the tunnel has weakened the bindings around the elemental. If you look closely enough you can just make out one arm moving, striving to get to the edge of the prison that holds it. In a day or so, it might just make it.

Professor Alacandra speaks levelly, probably in an attempt to calm herself just as much as you.

Professor Alacandra
"We have plenty of time to reverse the spell that holds this elemental. The tiles on the floor seem to be the key. In one configuration, they will complete the spell, and the elemental will be fully summoned, fully free. In another configuration, they will reverse the spell, and the creature will be released back to his home dimension. There may be other configurations too, however, so we will need to read the markings as we arrange the tiles to avoid any unknown effects."
OOC:
While Alacandra can probably do the arranging herself, she will not be able to keep track of all the runes at once, and if the wrong arrangement is made, the elemental will either be freed or - if it's screwed up too badly - it could quite possibly explode. Successfully finishing will require three things. The first two are:
-- Manually adjusting the runestones set into the floor. This is a job of strength or agility, dc 12.
-- Reading the secondary runes correctly to prevent the spell from going wrong. This is either intelligence or wisdom, dc 15
We need four successes on those before we get three failures. Feel free to narrate your results however you wish.

Once those are done, someone will have to help channel the spell to be cast. That will probably be either intelligence or charisma, dc 15, but I might take arguments for other abilities.

Alacandra will be reading the main runes to make sure they're in the right place, but that means her attention won't be anywhere else, so you're relatively on your own for this!
Apr 18, 2023 4:58 pm
Reading spells is what I have been studying. The stakes here are bit higher than just a class ranking. I will review the secondary runes as you adjust the stones. Verin, do want to help with some double checking?
Apr 18, 2023 7:59 pm
"Yeah! I mean, it's not really my area, but I can be an extra set of eyes. Maybe me not knowing any better and asking dumb questions will help you catch things," she says and moves over by Lash.

"Ok, explain it to me like I'm new."

For a while, the rune placement goes smoothly. Between the two of them, Verin and Laaesh are able to assemble the supporting runes into what seems to be the proper configuration. But then, just as they're finishing one side, Laaesh instructs S'sylin to place a run upside down. He notices his mistake, but it's too late. As the runestone touches just the edge of the one next to it, a powerful blast of invisible energy bursts forth from the runestone and it throws itself back out of the hole meant for it. The blast of energy knocks everyone backward, but the worst is to follow, because as everyone is lying flat on their backs, the blast ricochets off the ceiling, cracking a number of small stalactites above you and sending them hurtling down toward you!
OOC:
So far we've got 2 successes and 1 failure, so not too shabby, BUT...

I'm going to need an Agility save from everyone, DC 15. Success means you've managed to dodge out of the way. You can dust yourself off and keep going. Failure means you've been hit by 1d4 stalactites, and take 1 point of damage for each.

Rythorn stands by, keeping a close watch on the currently bound creature and any changes that may be taking place in its binding. He is so focused that he fails to notice the falling stalactites until its too late and only manages to jump out of the way of one of them. The sharp impact does quite a number on him and new gashes are opened where the rock hit.

Summoning most of his remaining strength, Rythorn moves to help with the runestones in and effort to get out of danger.

After the near disaster, you slowly and carefully re-align the runes the right way. As you get closer and closer to completing the pattern, the cavernous room you're in starts to tremble. dust falls from the ceiling in ever-increasing quantities, but thankfully, no more sharp bits decide to detach from the ceiling and live their brief lives as stone-faced assassins of anyone who happens to be underneath them.

For Alacandra, this is promising. She yells to you over the heavy, pulsing sound of building magical power. "It seems that we've got things lined up more or less correctly. There's so much power coursing through the room now that we should be able to cast... well, anything really. If we're going to cut this thing's summoning line, we should do it now! Who's going to help me?"

While you hesitate, your professor doesn't have such a luxury. She's already attached to the spell, and it's going to be cast through her, with or without anyone's help. "Come on! Someone! Anyone!" The rune she's standing on glows brightly, and flows of magic spike up through the floor, wrapping around her legs, slowly covering her lower body.

There's a lot of power here, probably more power than one person can handle by themselves, even an accomplished mage such as her.

The professor is yelling so loudly, trying to be heard over the cavern's shaking, that she doesn't hear Laaesh's incantation of the secondary lines. In fact, the cavern is so close to simply blowing apart that even Laaesh isn't certain that anything is happening at first. He's sure he read it right, but is it going to make a difference?

Flames erupt from the spellshield surrounding the elemental, and it seems as if it's going to fall -- no, going to shatter -- but then just as the inevitable is ready to happen, the elemental seems to stretch inside the shield, to warp... and then... silence. It is vanished, gone back to Fernia where it belongs, and the cavern is once again still.

Outside the chamber, the kobolds are in a full-on panic, but the sudden silence causes all of them to freeze and look curiously toward the inner cavern.

The elemental is no longer a threat, but can anyone safely explain to the kobolds why it's a good thing that their god is gone?
May 27, 2023 7:35 pm
S'sylin turned to the kobold populace, thrusting his chest forwards and striking a strong pose of command.
"IT IS DONE! I HAVE SAVED YOU ALL!"
Technically, he had only done a small part of the saving, but the black dragonborn was more concerned with cementing himself as a powerful figure to the kobolds. Anyone who couldn't see the value of controlling a tribe of violent barbarians of limited posture was horribly short-sighted after all. And while controlling them completely might be off the table, these creatures were likely content with a full stomach and some shiny stones.
May 29, 2023 3:23 am
I add to S'sylin's pitch in my best draconic, "Hail to the dark one!".
And I surround S'sylin with some blue and green dancing lignts for effect.
"Hail to the dark one!"

Verin just turns away to hide her laugh.
May 30, 2023 8:48 pm
The kobolds are but a simple people - at least this tribe is - and so the pronouncement that was strengthened by Laaesh's impromptu hyping makes quite an impression. After the initial uproar, the older kobolds sit down with S'sylin and try to ascertain when their new god would want. In the end, an agreement is reached that they will bring you any interesting baubles they find in exchange for medicine and clothing. To cement this deal, they place is S'sylin's hands a ruby that is at least 40 carats. After you subtract what the kobolds need, it doesn't leave much in terms of living in Sharn, but it should give you a fairly comfortable amount to live on in Stormreach.

Professor Alacandra is not entirely pleased by this turn of events, but even she is forced to acknowledge that if you want to get out of these tunnels without trouble, a god is certainly a convenient thing to be.

After taking your leave of the kobolds and their tunnels, you consider your options. Do you really want to be in charge of a bunch of kobolds? If you do, that's great, you'll get a little extra money every month. If not, what are you going to do about it? There are probably others that would like to take the trade deal off your hands, the dwarves of House Kundarak probably primary among them.
Jun 3, 2023 3:53 pm
S'sylin is rather pleased with the turn of events. For now, having the kobolds as a backup army at his beck and call suits him perfectly. Should things ever go awry in Stormreach he will have a formidable force to hide behind. And if he tires of the inferior little bastards he can always profit of them in another way. But who would throw away a private force like this just because it smells bad and makes annoying yipping sounds?

Thus he went out of his way to ensure that he upheld his end of the deal. He benevolently showered his subjects with gifts of linen and wool. Medicine was hardly his expertise, but he looked around for a bulk deal for bandages and balms for them. Upon delivery of those gifts he tried once more to learn more of them. Did they ever go to the surface themselves? And how far did their tunnels extend?
Jun 5, 2023 8:59 pm
If we have time to visit the city, Lash will do some site-seeing and will look for shops selling spell scrolls.
Jun 7, 2023 6:59 am
Their tunnels go far, S'sylin learns, but they rarely venture into them. They have heard strange digging sounds down some of them. From their descriptions it seems that perhaps the Stormreach sewers intersects them somewhere along the way.

The Professor needs a couple days to recover, so you all have a short break to go do what you will. There's a myriad of shops in the central part of the city, a vast chaotic marketplace full of stalls and roving salesmen. There's certainly the chance to find a few scrolls.
OOC:
I'm going to go ahead and bump you up to 3rd level. See your individual threads, but we're good to keep goinghere at the same time.

Oh no, you heard rumors. It's just that you heard so many of them and so many were contradictory, that you can't possibly tell which are true. There were three that stood out.

You've heard that an adventurer is gathering a party to drive an ice dragon away from an island village not too far to the west. You've also heard that it's not a dragon but an ancient warforged that somehow predates House Cannith's invention. There's apparently orc tribes to the southeast of Stormreach that are pushing villagers out of their homes. One of those villagers is wealthy enough to be able to pay someone to retrieve a few old documents he wasn't able to bring with him. Only someone said it wasn't documents that he left, it was spell tomes, and someone else said it was his daughter. Something strange is going on at the local Church of the Silver Flame as well, if a certain friar's stories are to be believed. He wouldn't go into detail - and looked sort of like one of those people who believe that House Kundarak financed the experiments that made the Mournlands and then set them off on purpose - but he said that if you'd meet him behind the church he'd tell you more. S'sylin has also received an orison sent to him by the kobold chief priest (yes, it's just a communication spell, but the kobolds think they're praying to him). There's a troglodyte that's taken up residence near their main encampment and they need a bit of help with it. As in they need someone else to take care of it entirely. Why not have their god do it?
Jul 3, 2023 7:43 pm
While Laaesh wanders Stormreach's marketplace, he finds two shops with magical scrolls. Although neither of his preferred spells are there, he does find a good variety of scrolls.

At Vankel's Magic EMporium, an ostentatiously named shop that has little more space than his own bedroom, Laaesh finds these scrolls:
ScrollWealth
Animal Friendship3
Blade Ward1
Friends1
Frostbite1

Mage Hand1
Produce Flame1
Protection from Aberrations4
Ray of Sickness3
Sacred Flame1
Wrathful Smite3

The second shop, a group of wagons circled together with a tent over them is call the All-Bazaar, and if full of cheap scrolls:
ScrollWealth

Catnap4
Counterspell4
Create Bonfire3
Detect Thoughts4
Dissonant Whispers3
Druidcraft3
Heat Metal4
Locate Animals or Plants4
Mage Hand3
Magic Weapon4

I'll buy the Witch Bolt scroll for 114gp if I can afford it with my wealth score of 1.

When back with the group I will relay the rumors I have heard.

1. an adventurer is gathering a party to drive an ice dragon away from an island village not too far to the west. You've also heard that it's not a dragon but an ancient warforged that somehow predates House Cannith's invention.

2. There's apparently orc tribes to the southeast of Stormreach that are pushing villagers out of their homes. The catch is that if you don't pay it back, you don't owe him anymore, you owe the Coin Lords. They'll distribute your likeness to all the reputable shops (and some of the sketchy ones too!) and you'll get charged a surcharge until you pay back what you owe. I head back to whatever our meeting place is with nothing but the sketchy rumors.
Jul 6, 2023 6:38 pm
When Laaesh gets back to the group's lodgings, he adds his information to the other options. Verin is not interested at all in talking to the Silver Flame, which leaves you with two removal jobs (the dragon/warforged, and the troglodyte), and the rescue mission, although whether the rescuee is inanimate or not is somewhat up for interpretation.

Helping the kobolds out won't lead to payment, at least not directly, but the other two jobs do leave you with questions.
Jul 12, 2023 10:39 pm
"We got lucky with the elemental. I don't think we're up to tackling a dragon. I'm in for either of the other missions."
Jul 13, 2023 9:25 pm
With vetoes on the church and the dragon, that leaves S'sylin and Cualli to weigh in on the remaining two options - the troglodyte removal or the rescue/recovery.
Jul 22, 2023 9:50 pm
S'sylin, looking slightly haggard after a period of dealing with the demands his small scaly under-empire felt like a benevolent God. That was to say, dealing with a troglodyte seemed like a not-so-suicidal enterprise that he felt he could manage with a little help.
"Killing the troglodite should be a small matter for us. It's close by too. Let us see to that first. Perhaps my, erhm, our friends of diminutive posture and intelligence will be in a position to provide us with something in return. At the very least, keeping them happy will keep them from causing trouble. We can go on this... expedition afterwards. Although I would prefer to be far better equipped if we're going to wade into a horde of orcs. I am sadly too short on coin to buy a half-decent armor for one.."

With the rescue still on the table for later, then, it's decided that - at least while Professor Alacandra is still resting, the closer of the options, the one more in friendly territory so to speak, is the more prudent, and so you set off into the ancient tunnels once more. The kobolds tell you that they've managed to chase the troglodyte a few times, but they either lose him in the many twists and turns of the tunnels, or they fall prey to traps that have been set. This tells you two things: Firstly, the troglodyte in question isn't stupid, and secondly, he's probably not alone. So, with the kobolds' help, you track the troglodyte through the tunnels, until you finally lose the trail at the end of a tunnel where it runs into a much older tunnel that runs straight left and right. Here, brackish water pours down from somewhere above; you're either underneath a stream or part of the more modern water-delivery system Stormreach has put in place.

The bricks that pave the tunnel are underneath at least a foot of sludge here, but in some parts the sludge has built up enough over the years that the higher parts have mostly solidified, giving you - at least mostly - a safe place to walk. The walls are made up os much larger bricks, no doubt the work of the original inhabitants of the city.

There's not much to see, or find here. The water has washed away all trace of the troglodyte. The right branch of the tunnel is almost immediately gated off, and locked. The left-hand path is clear, almost invitingly so. But you're in the troglodyte's home territory now, so it would behoove you to be on your guard no matter which way you go.

"Oh for fuck's sake..." Verin will take the lead in the tunnels. She pokes around the lock a bit, silently lamenting her inability to pick locks before steeling herself and heading into the Troglodyte's home turf.
Jul 31, 2023 9:36 pm
Verin strikes out in front, moving carefully through the tunnels, on the lookout for potential dangers. The tunnels weave back and forth through stone, and along the way there are small alcoves, barred off long ago, and you can still see the remnants of old crates and barrels behind the rusted iron.

As you navigate the third sharp turn in the tunnels, Verin halts. Something about this section of tunnel isn't right. There's two insets along each side of the tunnel, just like every other section you've passed through. But the wear on the barrels and other detritus here isn't quite the same. It's something you know you should be able to put your finger on, but it's just not quite coming... There's a series of old pipes running vertically here too. They're the same pipes as the rest of them that jut out from the stone every now and again, but they don't run horizontally with the tunnel. They're transfer pipes maybe? But transferring what? In two sets of the pipes, one close to you and one on the other side of the alcoves, are two valves. The one nearer to you is pretty corroded, but the one further away looks a little betgter, though it's also rusted and worn...
OOC:
I'm trying to make the scenes a bit more 'flowy' so I've listed skills and DCs for all the obvious interaction points, but I haven't listed WHY you'd want to interact with those points. Laaesh realizes at the last second that the stuff on the barrels is not growing, but corroding. It is the result of years of intermittent exposure to acid over many years. He manages to leap back in time, but his cry of alarm isn't quick enough for Verin.

As she examines the insets, she feels a subtle movement beneath her feet. One of the stones moves and she realizes too late that this is a trap. Acid bursts forth from a hole in the wall, spraying her all over.

Don't want that to happen again. So everybody is thinking the valve might shut off the traps, right? S'sylin, if you can turn the valve, I'll try to move forward. Maybe my Shield spell will protect me.
Aug 15, 2023 5:34 am
OOC:
@Gnellson - To answer your question, Shield normally doesn't work that way, but since you think you know where the traps are and are actively trying to dodge them, I think they're less traps now and more attacks, so if you want to run through them all, I'll roll attack checks for them and Shield will provide its +5 to AC for all of them.
Aug 15, 2023 9:51 am
"And how would we know that won't result in me getting doused with acid?" S'sylin reasonably (and self-interestedly) countered.

"A better idea is thinking this through. A troglodyte doesn't strike me as the creature who can make these traps. So why are they here?"

That's a good point, S'sylin. And I do have an answer for that, although I'm not sure how helpful it will be. But if Laaesh doesn't want to run through them, I'm interested to see if you come up with a better reason, cuz I might always go with yours if it's more interesting than mine!

"My first question would be, what's above us here? Wouldn't be the first time some church or prison or castle didn't want people wandering the tunnels below," Verin said, a bit short as she scrubs off every trace of acid she can manage against the stonework.

Investigation - (d20+6)

(9) + 6 = 15

Aug 16, 2023 3:22 pm
There's a lot of information here for those looking for it, more than Laaesh might expect, even.

Firstly, when you look closely at the valves, you can see that the nearer one was opened and lodged open with force that is probably beyond what a mere human could do. There's fingermarks in the valve. Not fingerprints, mind, but the actual indentations from someone's fingers as they squeezed the brass while they turned it. You might be able to get it closed, but it'll be difficult. Maybe two or three of you together?

Secondly, you can see several trails of troglodyte tracks here. The first one leads out into the middle of the room and stops dead there. After that there's just a smear that leads away from the tracks. Maybe that trog was dragged away. There's more tracks near the edge of the wall, though, and along that wall, there's acid damage as if the acid were splashed back at the wall. Perhaps the troglodytes built something that protected them from the acid, or perhaps they held something up to guard against the acid jets and it splashed it back against the wall.

However, one last set of tracks is more interesting, because there is acid scoring all around the footprints, but the footprints never stagger, never falter, almost as if the creature were immune to the acid altogether.

Looking away from the troglodyte tracks, you also see a small gutter that runs along the base of the wall opposite the acid jets. Upon closer examination, the floor also appears to be slightly off-level in the direction of the drain. This probably explains why the acid isn't simple standing on the floor and wearing it away. And half a thought strikes you. How much acid can really be left in those pipes, anyway?

@Gnellson - Does any of this help Laaesh or give him an idea as to options?

Assuming he shares this info, does it help anyone else decide what to do?
Aug 22, 2023 1:46 pm
Assuming the information is shared, Verin will start looking for something to use as a barrier. She'll backtrack, and see if she can find a (flat?) section of barrel -- a lid, or a bottom perhaps -- to use to block the spray.
Aug 23, 2023 8:45 pm
S'sylin, fresh out of ideas, decides to let the others show their worth..
Aug 23, 2023 10:02 pm
Lash contemplates (asks the GM) whether a Web spell could be placed to inhibit the acid spray but leave the path clear for us to pass.
Aug 25, 2023 3:38 am
That is an intriguing idea. The web wouldn't hold the acid for long, but it might get one person through. I think that can work. I'll let you go ahead and play that out and send someone through if you want to. if nothing else they'd have a shot at that easier valve on the other side.
Aug 25, 2023 10:01 pm
I think I can web over the acid jets and stop them from spraying long enough for one of us to run to the other end. Verin, if you've found something to use as a shield too, do you want to risk it?.

If Verin is willing, I'll cast the Web.

OOC:
Apparently, my post got eaten. I don't think there's any dearth of material that Verin can use for a barrier. The real problem is you don't know exactly how long anything will hold up to the acid. I think the best way to handle this is to have Verin make an Investigate check. The result of that will determine the quality of item she finds.
Aug 29, 2023 1:51 pm
"Oh my Gods there has to be something useful," Verin growls in frustration as she searches the remnants down here.

Investigation (INT) - (1d20+4)

Aug 30, 2023 4:09 am
Verin eventually finds a long heavy piece of iron sheeting. It should withstand the acid for long enough... should. But it's so old it's hard to know for sure. There's only one way to find out for sure.
OOC:
We're turning this trap around now. When you run though, it's going to attack the iron's defense, which will be 18, and then if it beats that, it'll repeat the attack against you.
Aug 30, 2023 4:13 am
Sheeting in hand, Verin will take a moment to breath and steel herself before running through the trapped area.
Aug 30, 2023 6:59 pm
As soon as Verin takes off, I cover the wall with Webs.
Aug 31, 2023 4:09 pm
The webs hold long enough that only the very end of the metal square is hit at all, and even then, it's not with enough acid to really do anything. On the other side of the acid showers, Verin is able to get a closer look at the valve on that side. It is very free from rust, unlike the one on this side, and while at first that seems like a good thing, Verin quickly realizes it is not. The lack of rust is one of the signs of acid washing, and is, in fact, something they learned about in her General Research (aka Dungeon-Diving) course. Using the metal sheeting as a shield, she's able to turn the valve enough to cut off the supply of acid to the hallway, and then leap back just in time to avoid getting sprayed by the loose seal on the valve.

Everyone else should be able to come through now, as long as they don't get too close to the still spraying valve pipe.
OOC:
I went ahead and made a few rolls for Verin, just so we didn't get bogged down in the back and forth.
Beyond the acid, there's a wooden door that stands partially open, probably because a child could push it in even if it was locked, and beyond it, a large room, probably thirty or forty feet wide and almost square, but not... quite. You're not sure if it's the angles or if one way is just a bit longer than the other. Either way, it bothers you. There are two doors here, one leading straight on and one heading off to the north. There are also five levers positioned seemingly at random around the room. We'll call them east, southeast, southwest, northwest, and north. There are no handles on these doors, so whoever designed this was clearly - at least in their mind - trying to be security-conscious. There's no indication on which hallway is the correct one.

"Everyone be careful."

Verin will throw a lever and see what happens.
OOC:
Let's say... the north lever.
Sep 9, 2023 5:39 am
Behind the walls, gears grind into motion, the sound moves slowly, invisibly, traceable only by the dust that shakes off of the ceiling as it follows the sound until it reaches the north door, where a wheel turns until a spring-loaded lock shoots out and binds the wheel in place. Now that your attention is on the doors, you can see that each of them has three locks. Two more levers will open the north door. Three of them will open the east door. There are only five levers, so one of them must operate both doors.
Sep 9, 2023 3:02 pm
Shrugging after she watches the mechanism in action, Verin will wander over and pull the northwest lever to see what it does.

"Open to suggestions, by the way. Otherwise, I'm just pulling levers."
Sep 11, 2023 6:06 pm
This time, the lever and its invisible moving parts lead to the east door, where a lock snaps open.
OOC:
This might help, btw, if visual aids are your thing.

Then again, it might not. My drawing leaves a LOT to be desired. XD
Sep 11, 2023 7:19 pm
Verin will move to the southwest lever and try that one next.
Sep 11, 2023 8:45 pm
"Pull away..." S'sylin said while taking a few steps back...
Sep 11, 2023 10:14 pm
Lash nods in agreement and stands near the NW corner watching for whatever.
Sep 13, 2023 9:43 pm
The southwest lever apparently connects to the eastern door as well, as another lock spins open there. As soon as the lock opens, however, there's a rapid series of clunks that pass overhead, shooting back to the west, and door you came in slams shut!

https://i.imgur.com/xd5CBof.png
Sep 14, 2023 12:06 am
"It's probably fine," Verin announces as she stares intently at the (now closed) door they came in.

Heaving a sigh, she will throw the next lever -- south east.
Sep 19, 2023 1:34 pm
Pulling the southeast lever causes the final lock on the north door to pop free, and the door starts to rise. You're immediately struck by how much dust flies into the air from this door opening. This can't be the route the troglodytes used. It hasn't been opened in decades - maybe centuries. There's a small antechamber directly on the other side of the door, with hallways stretching in either direction. But unlike the rooms you were in before, these hallways are massive, easily four times your height. These must be actual giant-built tunnels, making them far older than the tunnels you have found so far.

Tempting, but is exploring it worth it? Do you really have any other choice?

Sep 19, 2023 1:42 pm
"Well hell... what now?" Verin asks, turning to look at the others. "I think I opened the wrong door."
Sep 19, 2023 2:54 pm
S'Sylin rubbed his scaly chin. He saw an opportunity to find possible forgotten valuables and wealth without having to fight for it.
"So you have. But perhaps it will offer an alternate route... All we would lose is time if it doesn't."
Sep 19, 2023 3:18 pm
"Yeah, maybe," Verin muses. "I feel like it won't help much with the Trog problem... which is what we're supposed to be looking into. This passage is a total shot in the dark though. Could die, could find a backdoor into the Trog den, could end up rich."

She shrugs and draws her rapier. "One way to find out, I guess."
Sep 21, 2023 2:08 pm
"Yes, giants are much more interesting than trogs. And hopefully this old passage has fewer levers and valves." If light is needed, I'll light a torch, then take a few steps into the new passage.
Last edited September 21, 2023 2:10 pm

There's tiny slivers of light that are coming from something up above. Perhaps other tunnels criss-cross through the ground underneath Stormreach. The city isn't that old but it sits on the site of at least two previous cities, so it's possible. Lighting a torch will definitely make it easier to see though, so torch in hand, Laaesh leads the way into the giant-sized room. The light only illuminates about two-thirds up the tunnel itself, leaving the ceiling in shadows.

The room itself is about 45 feet wide and 120 feet long. It doesn't take much of an effort to walk it, even being careful, and after a few moments, it's clear that this sort of antechamber is empty, but there are actual cuts that score the walls, as if a battle played out here. More than one of the cuts is still stained with ancient blood, once red but long since turned to black. There's two stone doors, one on either side of the room, and they are also massive, but counterweighted, so that they'll swing open easily if given a good push. The door to the left has seen a bit more use it seems than the one on the right.
Sep 22, 2023 4:24 pm
"If the left door gets used, it's probably the one we should check."

With that, Verin makes her way towards the massive door and pushes carefully.
Sep 22, 2023 7:19 pm
With interest S'Sylin looked at the remnants of the ancient battle. There were no bodies or bones so if something died here, it was taken away. No one bothered to clean afterwards however, meaning the location likely got abandoned after the battle..
"It might serve to check everything at some point. The giants may have left something of value."
Sep 25, 2023 4:13 pm
To be a little more thorough as S'sylin suggests, Lash will cast Dancing Lights and send them up to illuminate the higher parts of the tunnel.
Oct 10, 2023 2:50 pm
Pushing open the left-hand door reveals a long passageway. It was probably a tight squeeze for a giant, but for you it's fairly spacious, fifteen feet or so across, and close to two hundred feet long. There aren't many marking in the section of hallway, but from far above, you can see sunlight filtering down, and water drips slowly down from the hole. It's enough to make the air musty here, but not enough to form puddles bigger than a few inches across. Further down there is water staining on the stones, but nothing on the floor. A broken rope lays half-coiled near the small puddle. That probably explains how the trogodytes got here.

About halfway down on the left is an opening. It leads to a large room full of remnants of over-sized furniture. Most are old and decayed, but on top of a pile of chairs is a glass box, the type used for showcasing valuables at museums. It looks like it's just been thrown up there. You'd have to climb to get it back down.

At the end of the hall is another room, smaller, and it is empty but for the carcass of a dead troglodyte. It's been here long enough that moss has started to grow over it.
Oct 10, 2023 3:27 pm
I'm feeling less worried about traps in this area. After seeing the smaller room at the end, I want to go back to the large room.
"Let's check out the room with the chairs again. I want to use my wand of magic detection there and also see if I can retrieve that glass case with my mage hand."
Oct 10, 2023 7:21 pm
S'sylin didn't mind having a look at the glass case himself. But the fact that the troglodytes, and perhaps others, had found access to this place had dimmed his hopes for finding untouched treasure.
"At least we know we're on the right trail for the troglodytes. They may even lair here.."
Oct 23, 2023 6:46 pm
The glass case is slowly levered out of the pile of chairs, and set down on the floor. Any hopes of finding anything interesting here are dashed, however, as the glass case is empty. There is an indentation, though, in the red velvet that covers the bottom of the case in the shape of a key. Someone's taken the key. It looks like the trogs did find it first, but if they're lairing here, they haven't left much sign of it. From what you know of trogs, even a temporary living space of theirs should carry an identifiable odor.
Oct 24, 2023 5:38 pm
S'sylin grumps at the disappointing discovery. With a sigh he turns around.
"Well, let's get back to it then.. Would be nice to be done before dark.."
Oct 31, 2023 7:47 pm
There's no real way back that you can find, so you continue on down the main passageway a bit, where you come to another room right as the passage turns south(ish). Inside the room is a stench so bad you could be forgiven for believing it was some magical spell, but it's not. It's a dead trog. He looks to have been stabbed to death judging from his wounds, and long enough ago that moss is starting to cover the body, but...

He's holding something, clutching it tight like he was trying to hide it when he was killed. It's hard to tell what it is from the doorway, but it's going to be hard to walk over to investigate too.
OOC:
Whoever wants to investigate, give me a CON save. You'll make it in and out either way, but that's some strong stench, and there might be some side effects.
Oct 31, 2023 8:26 pm
For a moment S'sylin hoped that someone had done the job of killing the troglodyte for him, earning him some easy coin. Then he noticed the state of the body and he knew things would not be that easy. Still, he wondered who competed with the troglodytes for these halls. As he pondered this question he noticed the troglodyte might be holding something. After the previous disappointments he did not hold out hope for something grand, but it warranted investigation nonetheless. And perhaps there would be a clue as to who else roamed these halls.

With a long sigh he took out a piece of cloth to cover his nose, and he stepped inside..

S'sylin was as quick about it as he could be, but still, the stench was horrendous. It was something of a joke in more 'civilized' society that troglodytes smelled worse alive than dead. Well... S'sylin could definiately put that lie to bed. Even the rag wasn't enough and he emerged from the room coughing and hacking, but holding the object the trog had clutched in his hands. It was a key that matched the dimensions of the velvet-lined box perfectly.

Falconloft sent a note to Khulod

Any hints what killed the trog?
S'sylin leaned with one hand against the wall with his head bowed, retching a few times.
"By the Gods that was.... *HUUUUU* that was *HUUUUUU* That was horrible!"
Nov 3, 2023 8:37 pm
He did have several stab wounds. Trogs are not nice creatures, even to their own kind, so most likely, he got in an argument with another of his group and was killed for his trouble. To fight over a key, he must have thought he knew something about it that would make it important. If you accept that the trogs came down that rope you saw earlier - down through the crevice from far above - then whatever he discovered about the key he must have discovered here in these rooms.

There's two more circular rooms along this hall before it turns back to go west again, making a third leg of a square. One's a bit bigger than the other, probably because it's got a font in it. There's a light source from somewhere under the surface of the water that makes the waves glisten, sending waves of light along the ceiling as the water ripples gently every time you step. The other room has a metal crate against the far curve of the wall, and it's locked (DC 20 STR check to break the lock, or DC 15 DEX check to pick the lock if you have appropriate tools), but with a key far smaller than the one you just found.

I was on the fence about athletics myself. RAW it doesn't work, but I like some skill to apply to most things, so we'll take it. Unfortunately...
The side of the crate crashes in under S'sylin's efforts, and a pile of gold coins spill out. Some are covered in dry blood and other... fluids. It's enough to give your personal wealth a significant boost. The rest of the contents are unfortunately ruined. They were simply too fragile for the crate to be forced open the way it was. It looks like the remains of an ancient shield and some sort of long-bladed weapon. They might be repairable, but not here. In the bottom of the crate, under the gold, is another key. It's identical to the first one, with one exception - the rune etched into the key's handle. It looks like the two keys must be a matched set.
Nov 10, 2023 4:18 pm
"Well that happened," Verin grumbled with her hands on her hips. "This place is huge... feels like we'll never find the Trogs at this rate."
Nov 10, 2023 6:45 pm
There's not much more to see in this room. After you gather up as much of the gold as you can carry, you can either head back to the room with the pool or continue on around the corner. If you do that, you'll come to the original hallway again, approaching the first room from the opposite side from which you left. There's a small alcove before you get there though, and in the alcove is another rotting trog - this time decomopsing naturally, and not as far along, so with any luck, he won't be as... potent - and a door - with four nearly-matching keyholes. Two of the keys you already have.
Nov 15, 2023 11:14 pm
S'sylin, his mood drastically improved after finding a stash of gold and some broken antiques, took a look at the door.
"One would wonder what sort of door requires four keys, which are then left around close by and unattended.." he mused. If this was an ancient door, he did not have high hopes for finding the remaining two keys. Still, it warranted continuing.

He also took note of the other dead trog. Perhaps its head would collect the bounty...
Nov 15, 2023 11:45 pm
"Yeah, that's kind of weird... feels needlessly overcomplicated, y'know?"

Verin looks around and shrugs. "Where to next?"
Nov 15, 2023 11:54 pm
"The other door." The Dark Dragonborn decided. It made the most sense to find more keys, if anything..

Verin nods and makes her way to the door S'sylin had indicated, attempting to open it carefully.
Nov 20, 2023 7:45 pm

I need to clarify which door we're talking about here. It's possible it's my fault for not being clear enough, but as of right now, the only door you haven't opened is the one that needs the four keys. There is a door that you didn't go through from earlier though - the one that leads to the room with the pool in the middle. Alternatively, if you want to try to open the door without all the keys, that's fine too, but it'll need a dc 15 arcana check.

OOC:
Oh. Gotcha. This is what happens when I sleep.
There is not much to be found here, although you regret even finding as much as you did. There's the corpses of two kobolds here, although age and other details are impossible to tell because of the way they died. It appears as if they were tortured to death. Whatever happened happened a long time ago though, judging by the decay. Most likely, these two were unfortunate enough to be trapped down here when the trogs originally arrived. Perhaps they were the ones who hid all these keys? At any rate, this explains how the troglodytes knew how to find the kobolds.

On the other side of the room there's a broken-down steel door. The hinges were damaged with acid and then it was kicked or beaten in. Beyond that is dark...
OOC:
For purposes of complete openess, there is still a puzzle down here, but this is the way you go if you just don't care about it, which is okay with me. You can always come back later if you'd rather, or not at all.

He would like to head to the room with the pool..

"Yeah, I mean we're here. May as well. After you." Verin will follow along wherever the Dragonborn leads.
Nov 24, 2023 7:09 pm
From somewhere, light is filtering into the pool, reflecting through it and out to you. The light's probably magical in origin given how far down you are, but you've heard of some ancient cultures that were quite adept at bending sunlight with mirrors and such too. Whichever it is, the pool is well-lit, and because of that, you can tell it's quite deep, too. Far down at the bottom is another key. The water's soft movements seem to cause it to wave back and forth as if its a piece of ribbon.
OOC:
Getting to that key and back out with it will take a DC 15 Athletics check.

Nov 24, 2023 8:11 pm
"Naturally." The dragonborn replied without modesty. Still, he carefully looked in the pond to see if there was something living in it that might take offense to his intrusion before he jumped in..

Can't you just magic the key up from... Astrid, or Phaeani as she likes to be called stops herself as S'sylin dives into the water. She is a full-blooded elf who always wears a pair of smoke-coloured glasses. Even this deep underground. Some would call her an elven heritage nerd as she had spent hours and hours with the drow texts. But then again, rumours are that House d'Phiarlan, the house of shadows, gave her the scholarship to Morgrave University.
She prefers to talk, think, sneak, cast spells and lock picking than to fight an opponent with cold steel

Underwater, S'sylin sees that this isn't just a pool, it's a waterway. Something natural must feed the system because it's clean - far cleaner than anything else down here. There's a current too, although just a soft one, leading off in the direction that you're pretty sure you were trying to go in the first place - but there's no telling how far you'd have to go underwater before you could surface again. You grab the key and resurface, climbing out of the water easily. That's three out of four keys here now. Where could that fourth key be? There's really only one place you haven't checked, mostly out of a sense of nose-preservation.

The corpse is only booby-trapped in that it's been dead just long enough for the gasses that are endemic to all troglodytes are starting to build up in the chest cavity, just waiting until either someone handles the body roughly or the skin gets too thin to hold it. Fortunately for you all, this trog hasn't been dead long enough to become truly deadly yet, so while there's some stink that comes with the search, it's nowhere near as bad as having a trog direct it at you deliberately.

A few unpleasant moments later, Astrid comes away with a key, the fourth one needed to complete the set. You take them all back to the door with the keyholes. While you're examining them as a set, you notice that the symbols on the bows of all four keys come together to make one glyph. Nevertheless, you can easily tell which hole each key goes into because of the shape of the key's stem. All that's left to do is to turn them - unless of course, you think there might be more at play here.

When Astrid places the keys together, she sees that the glyph that the keys make is actually a compound glyph, a combination of the ancient drow for high-priest and for dragon. It's fairly well-known, at least in your quasi-archaeological circles, that the dragons were the ones who finally caused the end of the giants' dominance of this continent. Why would a giant - or more correctly a group of giants need a high-priest of the dragons? Or did some simply turn to worshipping those who they knew afterwards to be superior to them? You ponder this as Astrid examines the door.

It takes her a few minutes to determine that - just like the entrance to this place - the four keys need to be inserted and turned in a particular order. The clues are on the keys themselves, and following the directions on them is not difficult.

With the turning of the fourth key, somewhere behind the wall a gear turns and the massive doors snap loose from their lock. The door parts, but only slightly. The room is all in gloom, but as you push the door open to enter, something in the shadows... moves. Chains drag across the stone floor, and a long, low groan catches your ear.
Dec 8, 2023 10:03 pm
"Shit." Verin veritably spits the word out as she draws her blade, tightening her grip as she peers into the gloom to see if she can tell what make the noise.

What was this? A prisoner? Which had been kept since the days of the giants? What might live that long?...

S'sylin can see, and assumedly passes on to the others, that there is someone sitting on the dais on the far side of the room. The figure, a female, is chained with long, heavy chains, to both sides of the room. She can stand, which she's in the process of doing, but she cannot advance more than probably ten feet in front of the throne. She seems to some sort of... elf maybe? It's hard to say. She looks far older than she should be, especially since the doors been locked and there's no food down here.

"I am Chadoula, I have no idea how long I have been here. Time drags so slowly when the doors close... But seeing as you are neither giant nor drow, I suspect that I have been here far longer than I think."

Chadoula sounds like a name Astrid has heard before in stories, but just where? She can't put her finger on it.

She lets out a roar so great that it nearly deafens you. The entire stone room shakes, plaster and stone dust fall from the ceiling, and a chunk of the frame above the door crashes to the ground. And slowly, unbelievably, the heavy metal chains that bind her in place begin to fracture.

OOC:
I'm not trying to railroad anything here, so I'm taking us back to the exit you found, but where you go from there is up to you.
The doors slam behind you, and the roar slows to a dull vibration under your feet, but it doesn't stop. Whatever enchantment is on this room, it seems as if it doesn't stop time entirely. While she was asleep - or at least while she wasn't motivated to do anything, she was more or less silent, but now she's awake, and that roar could last quite some time.

The subtle shudder vibrates under your feet. If she wasn't slowed down as much as she is, there would be stones fracturing. As it is, it will be a while before there's any discernable effect, but you're sure there will be one eventually. You're going to need some help to settle her down before she becomes a problem.

You're also going to need to find those trogs. Fortunately, you're pretty sure you already found another way out. You head back to the room where you found the two kobold corpses, and carefully make your way down the dark hallway. It leads gradually upwards until it splits into two paths. One curves northward and carries the musty smell of stagnant rainwater. The other tunnel heads back down and the smell that wafts up from it is the unmistakable smell of troglodyte.

That was the original mission for our esteemed employers that led us to this place.
A dull throbbing announced a splitting headache in S'sylin's near future which soured the dark dragonborn's mood. What should have been a simple (if dirty) job led to all sorts of complications, and there was very little to show for it so far. In fact, trouble seemed to be on the horizon. Well, trouble for others to deal with as far as he was concerned. He would simply instruct his legion of minions to stay well clear of this place and that would be that. Someone else in Stormreach could deal with the geriatric elf's temper tantrum. All he wanted was a Troglodyte head and some peace and quiet to recover from the day's ordeals.

"I'm all for being done with this," Verin agrees as she shifts, rapier in hand. She heads down the corridor, headlong into the stench, peering into the dark and determined to resolve things so she can take a hot bath.

"I feel as gross as this tunnel smells," she says to no one in particular, a brief shudder as she scrunches up her nose but resolutely forges onward.
Jan 12, 2024 8:48 pm
OOC:
The kobolds asked you to help out. Since they keep you in fairly good supply of minor gems that fund your living expenses, helping them out is usually a good idea. Though, that can change whenever you want it to.
You carefully pick your way through the tunnel, moving slowly and quietly, but it soon becomes apparent that you don't need to worry. The trogs have set up on a lower level from where the tunnel comes out - about thirty feet down - and are set up to defend the tunnels on the level that they're on. Those tunnels face in the direction of the tunnels you were originally in, so finding those hidden halls did serve one good purpose... It's given you a spot from where you can launch an ambush. Timing is going to be the thing. Right now, it looks as though most of the troglodytes - and you count 12, you think - are active. They're eating some sort of gruel, but they're not staying together in a group to do it. Now might be a good time, or you can wait to see if they settle down at some point.

What do you think? You're far enough above them that unless you raise your voices, your conversations will mingle in with the background noise of theirs.
Jan 12, 2024 10:57 pm
"That is a lot more of them than I signed up for..." S'sylin grumbled, clearly ready to turn around and forget about this sorry affair. He could get a head off one of the dead troglodytes they had found. That might fool their employers...

Astrid doent have any trixs or spells that can handle multiple targets. But her witchcraft might offer another idea. She conjures a spectral hand around her own and that hand moves away from their group. It gathers a handfull of slimy moss and floats high over one of the bigger troglodytes. As she dismisses the hand the slime falls right into the bigger troglodytes food bowl.
She aims to get them to fight each other.

You can't really tell what they say to each other in the few moments that follow, but there are clearly two leaders among the troglodytes, and one of the supporters of one is being blamed for throwing that slimy moss into the other leader's bowl. Everything happens to quickly for actual battle lines to be drawn - instead it's an all out brawl. Knives and clubs come out, and one over there in the corner is nocking an arrow...

It's hard to tell through all this, but seven of the trogs appear to be on one side and five on the other. There's already more than a few injuries, and as one trog vaults over a table and grings his plate down on the head of one of the smaller ones, there's at least one down for the count. If you were all to get an attack or two in, it wouldn't go noticed.
OOC:
If you want to take a couple actions to further stir stuff up or injure any of these, go ahead. I'm not laying out a map for all this (yet) so if you attack, just call it out and roll damage. If you do more than a couple each, someone's bound to notice.

Okay, so this is the one and only time I'm letting that work, @runekyndig. I like it, and I think it's fun, but the spell says, "If the target can tell you’re speaking," which because you've cast it silently....
One by one the combatants fall and sides fracture and change as each one sees an opening to become higher up in the pecking order. Finally, after just a few minutes, there's only five left standing, and only one of the original leaders is on his feet. The other in unconscious under a half-overturned table, and while most of the rest are also simply knocked out, three of them are clearly dead.

Just as they seem to have it worked out of their system, Astrid casts her spell and the second-largest one snarls and rushes at the leader, but trips and falls, and gets a knife through his back for his troubles. The big one clearly makes a challenge in the same vein as 'Does anyone else want some?' and the others fall back and flee, licking their wounds.

Not a single one of them is uninjured now, and they're fairly-well spread out. To succeed here, though, and keep the favor of your tiny reptilian worshippers, you'll have to convince them to leave or put them down.

Astrid drops from the ceiling right behind the largest trog and electricity spears through it, dropping it dead in an instant. She vaults over the table and gets her hands on one of the smaller ones as well, dropping it too, although that's not quite as much of a feat - it was very injured already. The one sitting next to it leaps up and swipes at her with it's claws.

Verin leaps down to the other larger trog and while it's steel, not electricity this time, it turns out that both are equally good at spearing things dead.

As the second trog falls, the first one rises, lurching toward S'sylin to receive instructions.

The sudden commotion from the main room brings another couple smaller trogs running, expecting to be able to see another fight - trogs are nothing if not vicious, even to their own kind - but upon seeing you, they scream and yell for assistance. "Smoothskins here! Up! Get up and fight!"

Astrid's incantation reverberated through the air, seizing control of the first troglodyte's mind before its cry is even fully out of its throat. The abrupt hush was palpable, and out of it, S'sylin's spear whistled past his thrall with unerring precision, finding its mark and silencing the second just as well as the previous spell - though somewhat more permanently. You strain your ears to detect any sign of additional threats, but only stillness hangs in the air.

Despite the apparent reprieve, however, you know that the surrounding shadows conceal more dangers - at the very least the remaining troglodytes are lurking in the shadows. But the absence of any sign of the rest of them is concerning. Are they hiding because they fear you? Are they looking for the best moment to escape? Or are they waiting for an opportunity to strike?

S'Sylin couldn't agree more on departing without risking their skins any further. He indicated his new pet.
"Got one right here, and it got legs. Let's get a move on!"
Feb 12, 2024 7:12 pm
Not waiting for any other troglodytes to appear, you keep the one undead trog you have under your control and backtrack toward the stairway that appears to lead back to where you originally came in. The stairs lead to a wide hallway that in turn, leads to a door with a familiar-looking lever. Sure enough, when you pull it, it leads back to the room with the levers scattered through it. This time though, since no one's pulled any levers since it reset, the door out is still open.

There's no sign of any pursuit behind you, but it's probably best to keep moving, so you continue on past the broken pipes and back to your original entrance, where a small crowd of kobolds has gathered, quietly chittering back and forth to each other about the rumbling from the tunnels and conjecture on whether you're still alive. When they see you, a cheer goes up, but then they see the troglodyte following you and the cheer flips on its head to alarm and there's several dozen spears pointing at S'sylin's undead servant, along with a cacophony of shouts, most along the lines of, "Why you bring Trogtrog here? Kill it, kill it!"
Feb 12, 2024 7:40 pm
So, S'sylin, this is your show... your holiness. Kill the enemy of your people, while they are truly defenceless. Or take this opportunity to strike a deal between these people and get them to leave each other alone.
Feb 14, 2024 8:38 pm
S'sylin smiled and cast his hands wide, drawing the attention of his diminutive servants.
"Fear not, my little scaled kin! Your mighty lord has done as he promised! I have slain a troglodyte, and brought you its head!" He glanced at the fresh zombie, and gave a firm command.
"Prostrate yourself."

The Black Dragonborn smiled a toothy grin as his servant obeyed, clearly enjoying the moment of power.
"With my magic, I have merely given movement to this corpse. Now it is my servant until such time I tire of it."
Feb 16, 2024 7:16 pm
The kobold crowd celebrates, probably more loudly than is comfortable, and they gesture forward to a young kobold decorated in glowy cave moss that presents you with an old sack. Inside are stones, and they look pretty ordinary, but as you're handed them, the elder kobold says, "See! We give gems! Uncut! We not want to damage them." If they are gems, uncut or not, they should fetch a decent price at the market. If only you could get into the market. Professor Alacandra might be able to get you in when she's well again, but killing a group of troglodytes might be enough to lift your reputations with the guards.

At any rate, your job here is done - for now. Do you want to go check back in with Alacandra, or let her rest?

"Hmmm, the market, yes, I suppose. I should get some armor before we find ourselves in another fight.."
...which somehow seemed inevitable with how things were proceeding.

"The elf? I plan to leave her right where she is, thank you very much. But find out what you can, of course. Just don't start trouble where there needn't be any!"
Especially trouble for himself, S'sylin glumly thought. Stupid crazy elf..

Word has gotten around the lower district that a band of students - the same ones that survived the airship crash and helped to save the injured there - have been dealing with some of the 'vermin' that infest the sewers. Clearly, they don't have the whole story, as they're not aware that the 'vermin' - as they put it - are actually worshipping one of the students as the incarnation of one of their prophesied returning deities. But enough of the story has gotten around that the guards are actually impressed, so this time, when you go to ask them for permission to enter the upper district where the marketplace is, they don't stand in your way.

Broken arches and fallen columns are covered with awnings and surrounded by market stalls. The Marketplace is the natural center of this city sustained by trade both legitimate and illegitimate. The twisting, improvised streets are crammed with people, most of them visitors, making their way through the city and stopped at every turn by hawkers trying to sell them one thing or another. Everything from taverns to hawkers selling trinkets to scroungers of all sorts buying seemingly useless detritus for their own shadowy purposes are vying for your attention. Three huge buildings loom over everything in this quarter:

The absolute first thing you see when you pass through the gates is The Bazaar, a gigantic tent sheltering the city’s great open-air market. Patched and re-dyed again and again, the tent dominates the Marketplace and can be seen from almost every part of it. Inside is a mess of walkways, smaller tents, and market stalls, all lent a reddish glow when sunlight shines through the tent overhead.

Secondly you notice the Lorsmarch Palace - the Storm Lords’ seat of power. Diplomats and other high-profile visitors meet with the lords here, and their magistrates administer justice within the palace’s chambers. Public executions are held in the square at the base of the palace steps, one of the few places in the city where members of the Stormreach Guard can always be found.

And finally, Falconer’s Spire rises high above the Marketplace, even taller than the Lorsmarch Palace and the great tent that covers the bazaar. A great blue-inlaid edifice, the spire acts as a docking station for airships and as the enclave for House Lyrandar.

There's almost certainly a House Sivis presence here, all it will take is some asking around. In the meantime, there's only about a hundred merchants selling armor. How can you possibly tell which to buy?
OOC:
S'sylin can use any armor, so I'll just give you the list, BUT... the quality and price are very much both flexible. A persuasion check will serve to modify the price. An investigation check will modify the quality. Both are DC 12/17. Lower than 12 quality goes down/price goes up, higher than 17 and the opposite happens.

Sivis isn't in the Marketplace proper, so while you'll have no trouble getting there, I'd like to handle the market-related things first.

Verin puts some time into picking through various pieces of armor, looking for something a bit more sturdy than her current leather. Unfortunately, she can't find anything she can afford that she wants, and at least settles on a good sturdy shield.

Astrid follows Verin into the leather shop. Oh this is looks nice? How about this one?
She holds a studded leather. Will you help me with the straps?

She takes off her own leather jacket and tries on the studded leather one. These studs are pricking me. I don't like it. Not this one.

She puts on her own leather again. This one is at least confortable.

@Khulod - Looks like armor prices are a bit high at the moment. Does S'sylin have any better luck?

S'sylin doesn't gamble, and just buys a chain mail, longsword, and shield. :)

@khulod - I may not have worded it as wqell as I could have, but those rolls were to simulate the volatility of the market in Stormreach, thousands of miles away from most of Eberron's smitheries. It's hard to get stuff. You can make the rolls afterwards, though so we can continue on.

After looking through the marketplace for a while, and picking up what items you can, you eventually inquire as to the House Sivis presence, and are directed south, through House Jorasco's holdings, to the Citadel of the Twelve. Following the directions, you make your way south to the district of Respite, where the conglomeration of races gives way to mostly humans and halflings, and where the ruins the city is built atop grow more elaborate and ostentatious - as ostentatious as ruins can be, anyhow. You pass by Coldwake Pond, which even in the temperate weather Stormreach is currently enjoying is much colder than other bodies of water in and around the city. Mist rises from the pond as warm, damp air meets its iciness. A large necropolis named Delara's Watch is here as well, and guards are posted to make sure the dead stay asleep - and ensure that no one goes in to wake them. House Jorasco's enclave is built on the district’s highest point, looking down the slope toward the district gate. The grounds in and around the enclave are filled with plants and flowers, perfuming the air and giving the area a feeling of being more alive than the rest of the ruins.

As healers, the Jorasco enclave is open to all, and so you're able to pass through and head for a rear alley where a small gate leads to a narrow path that twists and winds and eventually opens up in to Locksmith Square. It's quiet now in the daytime, but come nightfall it will be busier than the marketplace, and will probably not be a place where respectable students of reputable schools would want to be found. Not really relevant to you then. In contrast to the square, the rest of the Coasthold district is opulent and teeming with wealth. It's mostly dwarves here, with the entirety of the district owned by House Kundarak, and their colors fly in every imaginable place.

However, being the rishest part of the city, it's also home to the Citadel of the Twelve, which houses offices for all the dragonmarked houses, with the largest offices reserved for those houses that did not already have enclaves in the city. As you get closer, the emblems of several Houses become recognizable, namely: Cannith, Ghallanda, Medani, Orien, Phiarlan, Sivis, Thuranni, and Vadalis. You came here looking for Sivis, but it seems that you could possibly give a more direct report.

https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/eberron/images/7/7a/Phiarlan.jpgWhen Astrid sees the House Phaiarlan banner, an idea springs to mind.
Could you wait for me here guys? This is elves only. She puts out her cigaret, sets her hair and straightens her jacket - and then opens the door.
From inside they hear her say: Phaeani d'Phiarlan to see the "caretaker" please

Well crap. I wasn't supposed to list Phiarlan. Got my kists mixed up. I guess there's someone there still even though they have their own enclave now.

While Astrid is busy talking to whoever it is she's talking to in there, a runner comes up to those of you waiting outside. He hands you an envelope, and then just stands there, waiting on something.

Astrid comes back out just about then, seemingly satisfied. Apparently her name got her what she wanted. Those of you who know how the great houses work also know this... If you use your name to get something, someone else will eventually want you to use your name to get them something too.

It looks like the professor has lined up some coursework for you to do while she's away, but you do still have the rest of the day free before you have to worry about that. Anything else you'd like to check into before you head to get some rest?

I'm done here.
What do you got there?

Astrid reads the note
Are we doing cataloging? Not the most stimulating work, but hopefully not as dangerous as Troglodyte wrangling.
I want a armor upgrade if we are going to do more wrangling, but the only studded leather I found was crap.
Mar 8, 2024 2:35 pm
"I probably don't need any armor for book work. I mean... I would hope the books aren't that dangerous," Verin muses. "But yeah, the armor all seemed poor quality and overpriced for what it was. I'll save my coin for now."

The small Tiefling shrugs, and then notices the messenger was standing there. "Umm... yeah, guess we'll be there tomorrow." She stares at him for a moment, then fishes out a few silver and hands it over. "Broke college kids, that'll have to do."

@Khulod - S'sylin's searches ended him up with some really decent weapons even if they weren't any cheaper than normal. His chainmail doesn't confer Disadvantage on checks, and the shield will give him +3 defense instead of +2. Longswords are versatile, which means they do more damage if used with 2 hands, but yours will get the Versatile damage even with one hand, so it'll do 1d10 damage.

Also, it wasn't my intention to have everyone stick around for everyone else's errands, but the list of what people wanted to do was pretty short. If there's anything S'sylin needs to do, he doesn't have to wait around to do it.
The courier could tell you how exhausting it was stopping to ask twenty-seven people which way you'd gone for three hours until he finally caught up to you, but that's why he gets paid, so he isn't going to complain about it freely. He nods to you neutrally, hiding any disappointment - if there is any - and takes off at a trot, heading back to get another assignment.

It's probably only a bit past noon now, so you've got time for several other things probably. Kundarak does run this district, so any shops here are sure to be selling at least good-quality goods. It's not real certain what that means for your pocketbooks, but it might be worth a shot if you still want armor.
Mar 8, 2024 4:09 pm
S'sylin killed the time, congratulating himself on his excellent finds in weaponry. Really, he was a genius in all regards, from becoming a demigod ruler to brilliant business transactions. Why, at this rate he would be ruler of Stormreach in a year or so!

The tremendously pleased Dragonborn looked down his considerable nose at the others accompanying him.
"You can have my old armor if you want."
He was so magnanimous....

With nothing really left that's pressing, you all enjoy the day, sightseeing around the city. If there's anyplace safe that you'd like to go (feel free to have had your characters hear about places that you like, even if they haven't been mentioned here yet), then it's safe to assume you go there today. I will give you a couple rumors that you pick up wherever you go. We'll pick up the story for the next day in a new thread.

While I appreciate the gesture S'sylin, a leather armour from a male dragonborn, does not really count as an upgrade, compared to my own fitted leather.
Unless you are hoping that I will wear it, move about, see it fall off my shoulders - and get an eyeful of my boobs. Is that what you are after big guy?
Mar 12, 2024 11:09 pm
S'sylin looked offended, or even a little appalled at the suggestion. He might even gag a little..
"Really now, not only is your frail, thin skin repulsive to look at, the fascination of the scaleless ones with the milk-glands of their females is a bit of a running source of amusement, or should I say mockery, among my people."
Mar 13, 2024 5:43 am
Verin walks by as S'sylin and Astrid go back and forth, and without even looking at the big Dragonborn or breaking stride she quips, "You can't laugh at anyone -- you have a cloaca."

...and just like that she's gone, half way up the block looking in a window.
Mar 13, 2024 2:59 pm
It takes Astrid a second to process what Verin said, and then she burst out laughing. So much that she needs to take off her glasses to dry her eyes.
After the giggle have resided she looks at S'sylin and smile.
Come on... Lets get something to eat.
Mar 14, 2024 12:17 am
"A common misconception that... oh, yes! run off you, with your swinging milk-sacks!"
The dragonborn, annoyed and immediately contemplating a suitable revenge, crossed his arms.
"Hmph! Yes, let's.... and preferably somewhere that serves wine that doesn't taste like vinegar."
