Professor Alacandra

OOC:
Since I had to, unfortunately, pause for a bit, Things have kind of stalled, so I'm going to kick us ahead just a bit. If there's anything you would have liked to do in the space between the last post and this one, go ahead and assume you were able to do it as long as it doesn't involve leaving the tunnels. If you want the kobolds to have done anything for you, they tried. Roll a straight d20 and on a 6+ what they did for you worked out. Five or lower it didn't.
With the semblance of a plan, you all head back to the chamber that holds the elemental. It still stands there, immobile, waiting. But as you look around the chamber again, one eye slowly opens. Whatever happened out there in the tunnel has weakened the bindings around the elemental. If you look closely enough you can just make out one arm moving, striving to get to the edge of the prison that holds it. In a day or so, it might just make it.

Professor Alacandra speaks levelly, probably in an attempt to calm herself just as much as you.

Professor Alacandra
"We have plenty of time to reverse the spell that holds this elemental. The tiles on the floor seem to be the key. In one configuration, they will complete the spell, and the elemental will be fully summoned, fully free. In another configuration, they will reverse the spell, and the creature will be released back to his home dimension. There may be other configurations too, however, so we will need to read the markings as we arrange the tiles to avoid any unknown effects."
OOC:
While Alacandra can probably do the arranging herself, she will not be able to keep track of all the runes at once, and if the wrong arrangement is made, the elemental will either be freed or - if it's screwed up too badly - it could quite possibly explode. Successfully finishing will require three things. The first two are:
-- Manually adjusting the runestones set into the floor. This is a job of strength or agility, dc 12.
-- Reading the secondary runes correctly to prevent the spell from going wrong. This is either intelligence or wisdom, dc 15
We need four successes on those before we get three failures. Feel free to narrate your results however you wish.

Once those are done, someone will have to help channel the spell to be cast. That will probably be either intelligence or charisma, dc 15, but I might take arguments for other abilities.

Alacandra will be reading the main runes to make sure they're in the right place, but that means her attention won't be anywhere else, so you're relatively on your own for this!

Reading spells is what I have been studying. The stakes here are bit higher than just a class ranking. I will review the secondary runes as you adjust the stones. Verin, do want to help with some double checking?
Apr 18, 2023 7:59 pm
"Yeah! I mean, it's not really my area, but I can be an extra set of eyes. Maybe me not knowing any better and asking dumb questions will help you catch things," she says and moves over by Lash.

"Ok, explain it to me like I'm new."

S'sylin made himself useful by doing the heavy lifting. The dark one was blessed with a great physique that he was not above using. Plus it kept the prying kobolds off his back for the moment as they saw their savior working on their behalf...

Rolls

Strength (Athletics) - (1d20+6)

(10) + 6 = 16

As S'sylin rotates the runes I read the secondary runes and translate to Verin.

Oh wait. That's upside down!

For a while, the rune placement goes smoothly. Between the two of them, Verin and Laaesh are able to assemble the supporting runes into what seems to be the proper configuration. But then, just as they're finishing one side, Laaesh instructs S'sylin to place a run upside down. He notices his mistake, but it's too late. As the runestone touches just the edge of the one next to it, a powerful blast of invisible energy bursts forth from the runestone and it throws itself back out of the hole meant for it. The blast of energy knocks everyone backward, but the worst is to follow, because as everyone is lying flat on their backs, the blast ricochets off the ceiling, cracking a number of small stalactites above you and sending them hurtling down toward you!
OOC:
So far we've got 2 successes and 1 failure, so not too shabby, BUT...

I'm going to need an Agility save from everyone, DC 15. Success means you've managed to dodge out of the way. You can dust yourself off and keep going. Failure means you've been hit by 1d4 stalactites, and take 1 point of damage for each.

PCs are all up again after resolving that.

Verin will continue helping Lash in his endeavors.

"OWW! Sunuva... that hurt..."

Verin is clearly looking the worse for wear, but doesn't back away from helping with the puzzle.
OOC:
All the stalactites hit Verin. 4 damage.

Dodging stallagtites

Sorry. Sorry. I thought it was... nevermind. I'll be more careful.

Lash checks to see if everyone is okay before proceeding.

Vacationing for a week. May not be able to post often for Lash. But here is one before I go.
After seeing everyone is okay and we start again to fix the runes, Lash again checks the secondary text.

Rolls

Intelligence (Arcana) - (d20+6)

(19) + 6 = 25

Rythorn stands by, keeping a close watch on the currently bound creature and any changes that may be taking place in its binding. He is so focused that he fails to notice the falling stalactites until its too late and only manages to jump out of the way of one of them. The sharp impact does quite a number on him and new gashes are opened where the rock hit.

Summoning most of his remaining strength, Rythorn moves to help with the runestones in and effort to get out of danger.

S'Sylin was surprised at the blast, but saw the falling doom coming and rolled to the side. He got up and pointed at Laaesh.
"You fool! You could have killed us all!"

OOC:
Was waiting for people to be back from vacation, but I'm going to go ahead and move this forward.
After the near disaster, you slowly and carefully re-align the runes the right way. As you get closer and closer to completing the pattern, the cavernous room you're in starts to tremble. dust falls from the ceiling in ever-increasing quantities, but thankfully, no more sharp bits decide to detach from the ceiling and live their brief lives as stone-faced assassins of anyone who happens to be underneath them.

For Alacandra, this is promising. She yells to you over the heavy, pulsing sound of building magical power. "It seems that we've got things lined up more or less correctly. There's so much power coursing through the room now that we should be able to cast... well, anything really. If we're going to cut this thing's summoning line, we should do it now! Who's going to help me?"
OOC:
DC 15 Arcana check, but for this roll, either Intelligence or Charisma will work!

Lash knows he should be volunteering himself, but given his resent costly mistake, he hesitates to see if anyone else steps in.
May 11, 2023 4:48 pm
"Maybe someone more magically inclined than I am should do it!!" Verin calls out above the din.
May 11, 2023 4:51 pm
"I'm certainly no mage. It may make things worse for me to try."
May 12, 2023 9:08 pm
"I will do it" says Lash trying not to look at S'sylin. "Which part am I reading?"
When she gives the instructions, I focus and cast my part.

Rolls

Arcana - (d20+6)

(14) + 6 = 20

S'sylin's dark glare bored into Laaesh's neck but the Dragonborn had not volunteered either. He knew this was beyond his expertise, and he feared to fail in such a task..

While you hesitate, your professor doesn't have such a luxury. She's already attached to the spell, and it's going to be cast through her, with or without anyone's help. "Come on! Someone! Anyone!" The rune she's standing on glows brightly, and flows of magic spike up through the floor, wrapping around her legs, slowly covering her lower body.

There's a lot of power here, probably more power than one person can handle by themselves, even an accomplished mage such as her.
