[1] The Lower Road

Nov 9, 2022 7:37 pm
You're forced to stay one more night in the infirmary - although there's not much force about it; you're weary enough that the rest is welcome. The next morning, one of the locals comes to collect you and take you to the complex that's been discovered. It's hidden behind a huge fallen stone that's been hewn out to form a storefront. Behind it, the moss and vines have been pulled aside to reveal a small stone door - much too small for a giant to use. It must be a workers' entrance, and you're again reminded of the giants' dark past. They for centuries forced their drow slaves to build vast underground complexes like this one. Their original purpose is lost to antiquity.

Perhaps you'll find out why this one was built.

As you step into the tunnel, you're met with damp, stale air that's slightly too warm to be comfortable. The stone walls curve slightly inward before meeting the ceiling. Vines hang down between the stonework above you like living stalactites. Some even reach the floor where they've begun to spread out and creep along the ground. Two side passages are blocked by stones that would take weeks to move, but the central corridor is clear.

Occasionally the passageway narrows slightly and elven engravings decorate the makeshift dividing lines. Two sections down, the corridor appears to branch off again.

Professor Alacandra
Before you can do more than have a brief look around, Professor Alacandra informs you, "I'm going to see if I can figure out how to safely move some of these rocks. Go ahead and explore the available section of the ruins for now. Come back when you've gone as far as you can, or if you need help."

Lash slips his wand from his sleeve and flicks it in the direction of the passageway. "callalantroupe"
Four glowing lanterns appear floating ahead of the group casting dim light.
[ +- ] Dancing Lights
Do the engravings include words? Or just pictures?
Lash asks the group, How many of us can read Elvish?

I do

Cualli translates the elven words outloud

With the corridor lit up better, you can make out more of the words. That is to say, you can make out that there are more words. The elvish script is more... spiky than flowing, which makes sense as it was carved, not written, but some of the phrases don't really make any sense. It's in an ancient dialect that you've never seen before. The lines you do understand seem more like personal expressions than a historical record or warding incantation.

It has been ten years and I still have not ????? more than once.
This area(?) belongs to Nyzik, the ????? of all his group.
Soon we will find the ????? and then the giants will all have death continuing.
(Maybe that means forever?)

It looks like the tunnelling further on is of a different style. Maybe the drow were searching for something here that they didn't want the giants to know about.

"Sounds like gibberish to me. Maybe personal scrawlings or something meaningful to the previous inhabitants. Let's head on and see if things become more clear." Rythorn proceeds down the corridor, careful to keep within the light.
Nov 12, 2022 11:43 pm
Oh come on Rythorn, this is interesting! These words were carved in by the elves who made these tunnels, But I feel like I'm missing some of the most important words. Like, what could an elf not do more than once in ten years? Break Wind? Make Love? Take a rest?

And who is Nyzik? Was he the messiest of all his group? or maybe the wealthiest. Perhaps he was a practical joker and we are about to walk into a room full of whoopee coushins. Who knows?

But listen, that third line about the whatever it is that's going to cause death everlasting to the giants? Like, well, I mean, I haven't seen any giants around. Have you? Whatever it is, I think they mighta found it. and you know what else, If they found it, then that means that we can find it. And that sounds like some bona fide grade A magic treasure to me.

Rythorn stops and waits for his companion. "Yeah, it's interesting. The thing is the important bits are left out. It's good to keep this in mind, but I doubt we'll be solving any riddles without finding something more complete."

As you progress down the hallway and come level with what appears to be the next intersection of tunnels, it becomes clearer that these are just small rooms off to either side. The thinner interior walls have long since fallen down, leaving only the thick stones of the tunnel walls in place.

Suddenly, a gout of flame rushes out from a small hole in the wall. Before anyone can react, the flame engulfs you and knocks you off your feet. It seems - appearances to the contrary - that there is something down here that someone did not want to be rediscovered.
OOC:
Small note: This is not quite how the book runs things, but I am trying to adjust this rule for a smoother pbp experience. I am going to assume that you're keeping an eye out for traps, but instead of having each of you roll for something that you might not even known is there, I'm going to roll against your passive perception (Perception + 10) If your score is higher than the roll, you have seen the trap and can avoid it. If it's lower, it's going to hit you. If your score is equal to twice the roll, you can pull one additional person out of danger as well! The bonus to the roll will the traps Spot DC -10. So if you'd normally need to roll a 15 to spot a trap, I'll be rolling 1d20+5.

For this trap, the same will apply to any checks to get out of the way of the trap. It'll be the trap's roll, vs your passive agility (Agi + 10). I realize that some don't like dice being rolled for them, so if there's changes that need to be made to this, please let me know in the OOC chat and we'll figure something else out.
Once you've pulled yourselves together, the tunnel splits in half further on down.

Rolls

hidden trap - (1d20+5)

(12) + 5 = 17

trap quickness - (1d20+3)

(20) + 3 = 23

damage - (1d10)

(7) = 7

"Oh what the hell?!" the Teifling exclaimes as she picks herself up, singed and irritated. Coughing slightly, she pats out some embers on her clothing.

"Let's hope that doesn't happen again," she adds with an exhasperated sigh.

Rythorn stands after Verin. The skin of his face now has a thin layer of soot applied. "Okay, let's try and keep a more focused watch. Another trap like that and we might not be coming out of here."

Lash grimaces. His mind replays his thought process that had decided not to study healing spells.
Ugh.
Maybe we should spread out a bit more.

Wow! Maybe this area belonged to Nyzik the toastiest of his group!

Here I have an idea. Let's just assume everything is trapped . I don't like the look of those vines. Lash can you help with a little light? Watch this.

Cualli takes a pinch of alchemical powder and some forest moss from his pocket and puts it in his mouth. He chews it up and spits a little wet mound of it into his hand. He rubs it into his palm with his thumb until he sees the largest heaviest rock he can find. He rubs the concoction onto the surface of the stone and sends it down the hallway ahead of them like a bowling ball, when it gets as far as he can send it, it begins to levitate into the "living vines" in the ceiling.

Let's see what happens.

The vines themselves aren't living in the sense that Cualli probably is cautious of, but they are hiding something more sinister - another set of traps. As the stone pushes through the vines, they drag along the floor and trigger the mechanism hidden there. This time, two flames are thrown out from the corners of the inset hallway. The vines are immolated before the fire shuts off. That trick probably won't work again - it's too dependent on the vines - but maybe it can give you clues as to how to check for traps, or where.

The hallway is clear to the split. The left side of the split is filled with webshe other side is clearly a work area, with rotted workbenches and shelves full of long-turned-to-dust items and rusted machinery.

With Cualli in the lead with his wealth of wariness, he is able to note that there are doors set into the ceiling here. There's a mechanism between the doors that probably should allow you to adjust them somehow, but it's just one lever - it's not clear how that would work.
Nov 16, 2022 7:46 pm
I can try that lever from a safer distance if you guys want me to.
Nov 16, 2022 8:12 pm
"Might be best," Verin agrees. "I'd hate to die before we find the good stuff."
Nov 16, 2022 8:55 pm
"I would prefer to stay alive after we find it as well." Rythorn notes. "Keeping our distance sounds smart to me."
Nov 16, 2022 8:58 pm
Okay. With everyone well back from the ceiling doors,
Here goes.
I use Mage Hand and push the lever forward.
