[1] The Lower Road

The lever moves, but nothing happens. The system is ancient after all.

But just as you're about to give up on it as out of repair, something behind the wall moves with a thunk, and then the sound of gears spinning follows. The right door grumbles down from the ceiling and settles in place with a small explosion of dust that's been kicked out of the way by its weight. The lever might work again, but you'll have to wait to find out, because the noise has awakened something, and you hear a tik... tikytiky-tik-tik-tik as more feet than you have begin to move on the stonework inside the left branch of the passage.

Drawing her trusted rapier, Verin puts a back to the wall. "Why," she grumbles, "can't we just open a door and find an obscene amount of gold, some magic stuff, and a Big Book of Lost Secrets so we can get an A and go home? It's always something..."
Nov 21, 2022 10:21 pm
Refreshing our light here. "callalantroupe" Lash re-casts Dancing Lights then moves to the opposite wall and readies his cross bow.

"It doesn't seem to be the fate for our type to have it easy." Rythorn draws his well-worn longsword and speaks to it. A blue glow eminates from the blade and fills the area around him. "As always, observe caution. We don't know what we're dealing with yet."
Nov 24, 2022 6:17 pm
with a fresh memory of the previous fight, Cualli squeezes into a dark nook and readies his crossbow.

OOC:
My apologies for the extended delay. The holidays threw all of my scheduling off.
As Laaesh reinvigorates his light, the creature making the otherworldly echoes on the stone comes into view, slowly extricating itself from its hole. It looks like the spider had grown a bit bigger than the hallway it had made its nest. Or perhaps, just perhaps, it had swollen up bigger from decay and rot after it died - not that its death seemed to bother it overly much. You get a good look into the interior of its dead carcass - dried out flesh and encrusted blood - as it raises itself to its full height, front legs searching for... what? Is it possible it couldn't see you? It doesn't directly attack at any rate.
OOC:
How do you want to handle this? An attack is certainly possible, and given the fact that you've prepared, I'd let you take your actions first. But if it really cannot see you, there are probably other options available as well.
Nov 30, 2022 1:52 am
Rythorn raises his hand in a gesture saying "Hold on". He moves close to Laaesh and whispers as to not be hear far off. "Would you be able to cause some sort of noise on the other side of the creature? It seems unaware of us as of yet. We might be able to use that in our favor."
Nov 30, 2022 4:19 am
I nod affirmative but I'm concerned that I have to speak my incantation. It's worth the risk.
Rumbeloqist
Using thaumaturgy, I start some tremors in the hallway behind the creature. They will continue for a minute. The spell has only the voice component so I keep my crossbow ready.
Nov 30, 2022 11:49 pm
The long-dead spider pauses for a moment, uncertain whether it heard - or more likely felt anything. But then the rumbling starts behind it, and it turns, quicker than you would have thought possible... quicker than you could have reacted to had it decided to leap at you... and slides back into the passage that it came from, heading for the phantom sound.

Now's your chance to do something while it's distracted, but you know it will probably be back, and soon.

"Great, but now what?" Verin's question is simple, pragmatic... and urgent. "Can we maybe set some spears or sometbing so it'll impale itself? Any broken, pointy wood around?"

OOC:
Are we at a four-way intersection?

OOC:
Behold my amazing artistic skills! This is vaguely what you're looking at.

Here goes nothin'
With the spider turned back into the tunnel Cualli comes out from his hiding spot and just runs for it to pull the switch.
Dec 8, 2022 8:54 pm
Cualli dashes toward the switch, intent on flipping it back to close the door on the spider-thing, but his movement isn't quiet. The spider whirls and skitters back toward the door. One leg reaches out to wrap around Cualli's leg, but as he feels himself start to lose his balance, he manages to pull the lever.

The door slams down on the spider's leg, just before more of him can get out of his tunnel. Cualli's leg is released as the spider tries to pull its leg free. It twitches erratically but it seems that for now, it's stuck.

The other thing that happens when the lever is pulled is that the other side of the passage opens up again. The room on this side is ancient, full of crumbling scrolls and rusted bits of metal that were probably meant to be pieces of machinery at some point in the distant past.

At the other end of the room is another door, and a lever next to it that presumably works just the same as the previous one.
OOC:
There is stuff to find here, but only one search check is going to be possible due to the fragile nature of everything here. That means the person who searches is going to determine what is found. You may want to talk it out first.
Dec 8, 2022 11:01 pm
Looks like this would have been a great find a hundred years ago. Now we'll be lucky to find even a few useful pieces. I can help make sense of whatever we find, but someone else is probably better at wading through the junk.
OOC:
Lash is skilled in arcana, history, and investigation.
Dec 9, 2022 8:35 pm
OOC:
Investigation is going to be the skill that's used. I said search out of familiarity.

Investigation. When you look around for clues and make deductions based on those clues, you make an Intelligence (Investigation) check. You might deduce the location of a hidden object, discern from the appearance of a wound what kind of weapon inflicted it, or determine the weakest point in a tunnel that could cause it to collapse. Poring through ancient scrolls in search of a hidden fragment of knowledge might also call for an Intelligence (Investigation) check.
Dec 10, 2022 8:26 pm
Cualli jumps out of the radius of the spider thing's arm and brushes at his own leg. Yuck. I can still feel it touching me.

He composes himself and stands next to Lash peering down the second passage.

I think I might see something interesting over there with those bits of machinery, Do you see it?

Cualli points towards a thing in the machinery
OOC:
Cualli has pretty good investigation, I'm willing to look or give a buff if that's allowed.
Dec 12, 2022 4:07 am
Verin skirts around the twitching spider leg, and takes in the room full of what was, once upon a time, probably fascinating things.

Now though? It looks like a sneeze could destroy it all... and this room is dusty.
OOC:
Verin has a +4 for Investigation. It's an ok modifier, but not great. Then again, any of us can roll a 1.
Dec 12, 2022 10:21 pm
After Cualli points it out...
I think you're right. That does deserve some investigation.
OOC:
I'll make the roll.
Lash tip-toes to the point of interest and peers closely at the item.

Alas, the vast majority of the items in this room crumble at the slightest breeze, so when Laaesh moves past them, there's a slow flurry of ancient parchments that soon cover the floor. Ah well. At least the machinery is still here. It looks like the sort of gears you'd see in a children's puzzle toy back in Sharn, but at a larger scale. There is one design that survives as well, but only because it was etched into the desk underneath. It appears to be a magical lattice of some sort, but more than that cannot be determined because of the crudeness of the sketch.
