"Laaesh, is there anything worth gathering? I sense that we should continue our progress. Rythorn shifts his weight back and forth as he scans around the area.

There's something here about a lattice workings but I don't understand it. I think we need to just move on.
Dec 15, 2022 1:01 am
Could be like a net or something. Or a web? Could have something to do with our neighbor over there. All I know is if I see another one of those things, I'm using magic, I mean fighting stuff with magik is like half of what you learn in alchemy.

Cualli pulls out a tin that contains a combination of chewing tobacco and alchemical powders that give the tobacco an amber glow. He tucks a little wad of it under his lip.

I agree, let's press on, but let's also keep our eyes peeled, this place could be crawling with spider things or traps or who knows what.

"Let's try and survey our surroundings before pulling any more levers if we can."

Rythorn raises his sword and pushes onward into the cavern.

A hand on the hilt of her rapier, Verin follows the group further in.

As she walks, she quietly calls out, "Hellooooo, priceless ancient artifacts, where are you?"
Dec 19, 2022 5:37 pm
The way further into the cavern requires the pulling of that lever at the other end of the room, but thankfully, all it does is open the door. As you file into the cavern, your footsteps echo back off the smoothly carved walls, and the floor--

The floor is a vast, shimmering sheet of ice. It stretches for at least a hundred feet in front of you and forms a massive square, crisscrossed by stone every ten feet or so. At the other end of the ice is a large bell, and inset along the two side walls are two levers on each side. Each has a differently colored crystal above it: purple, pink, orange, and blue.

Below the ice, you can see glimpses of something else, but the ice makes it difficult to ascertain what it could be.

Lash mumbles his sentiment, I'm still regretting the choice of this "complex" instead of the "under-the-tavern" option.
Then offers a suggestion.
Guys, instead of guessing about levers and colored crystals,
how about an arrow-shot to ring that bell?
Dec 20, 2022 12:31 am
"That would be quite the shot. Think you can make it?"

Rythorn crouches and holds his sword near the ice as he speaks, trying to make out what's below the ice.
Dec 20, 2022 12:35 am
"Worth a try at least," Verin adds, encouraging Lash.

Looking to Ry, she asks, "what do you think is down there?"
Dec 20, 2022 12:39 am
"I'm not sure, hopefully not something hostile. I'm watching to see if it moves." He turns his head to look at Verin, "How thick does this ice look to you?"
Dec 20, 2022 1:24 am
Verin pokes at the ice with the tip of her rapier. "I dunno, lemme see..."

tell you what Lash, you make that shot and I'll buy you a drink as soon as we see our next tavern

I didn't know I was nominating myself, but okay.
I level my crossbow, aim, take a breath, fire.

The ice is solid. It's probably at least 10 feet thick. Probably more, if we're honest about it. But not for long...

Laaesh takes aim and fires at the bell. It makes a very small, very hollow tong. And then Cualli remembers his Alchemical Architecture lessons and realizes what's about to happen. He's able to jump to part of the stone grid just in time, and warn the others so that they too can move.

The ring echoes around the room, off the smooth stone and the sheer ice. And every time it does, it grows louder.

tong... tong... tong... tong... tong... tong...

The ice suddenly cracks, splintering under your feet, and then shatters, falling the thirty feet or so down to the floor below.
OOC:
Everyone but Cualli needs to give me an Acrobatics check (Agility) with advantage to see if you stay up. Falling won't kill you, but it might take you out of the action for a bit.

"Whoa, what's going on!?" Rythorn tries to jump off of the ice and onto the stone structure....

I impressed myself with that shot.
Why is it getting louder?
Uh-oh.
Move!

Let's see, basic alchemical metalic alloys such as brass and copper will respond with a reverberant and sometimes magical field of energy recognizable as increased sound waves that when introduced to temperatures of that of or below the ... Oh, oh no, EVERYONE JUMP!
Dec 21, 2022 11:49 pm
S'sylin, walking in the back and content at letting others do the poking around frowned at what was going on. Only when the ice started to crack did his eyes widen and he jumped to safe ground. Who made a trap like this!?

Verin and Laaesh don't quite move fast enough. They're suddenly caught in free-fall as the floor simply isn't beneath their feet anymore, and they fall...

They splash down into the middle of an underground spring, one that's now full of magical ice and rapidly cooling. They're probably going to want to get out of there quick.
OOC:
A successful Athletics check (DC 15) will get you quick enough that you suffer no ill effects. A failure still gets you out, but you're Vulnerable to cold damage until you receive healing from some other source than your Health Dice.
There is good news for those down below though. They have not been spotted by the small band of kobolds who are hurriedly rousting themselves from their slumber and aiming their tiny bows skyward in the direction of S'sylin and Cualli, and Rythorn.
OOC:
This could easily turn to combat, but it doesn't have to. I'm trying to keep mandatory fights to a minimum. That doesn't mean, though, that it will be easy to avoid. So that this doesn't bog down with skill checks and such though, I will tell you that any skill you try to use to avoid combat will have a DC of 14.
