S'sylin was as quick about it as he could be, but still, the stench was horrendous. It was something of a joke in more 'civilized' society that troglodytes smelled worse alive than dead. Well... S'sylin could definiately put that lie to bed. Even the rag wasn't enough and he emerged from the room coughing and hacking, but holding the object the trog had clutched in his hands. It was a key that matched the dimensions of the velvet-lined box perfectly.

Falconloft sent a note to Khulod

Any hints what killed the trog?
S'sylin leaned with one hand against the wall with his head bowed, retching a few times.
"By the Gods that was.... *HUUUUU* that was *HUUUUUU* That was horrible!"

He did have several stab wounds. Trogs are not nice creatures, even to their own kind, so most likely, he got in an argument with another of his group and was killed for his trouble. To fight over a key, he must have thought he knew something about it that would make it important. If you accept that the trogs came down that rope you saw earlier - down through the crevice from far above - then whatever he discovered about the key he must have discovered here in these rooms.

There's two more circular rooms along this hall before it turns back to go west again, making a third leg of a square. One's a bit bigger than the other, probably because it's got a font in it. There's a light source from somewhere under the surface of the water that makes the waves glisten, sending waves of light along the ceiling as the water ripples gently every time you step. The other room has a metal crate against the far curve of the wall, and it's locked (DC 20 STR check to break the lock, or DC 15 DEX check to pick the lock if you have appropriate tools), but with a key far smaller than the one you just found.

S'sylin gave the crate a try...

I was on the fence about athletics myself. RAW it doesn't work, but I like some skill to apply to most things, so we'll take it. Unfortunately...
The side of the crate crashes in under S'sylin's efforts, and a pile of gold coins spill out. Some are covered in dry blood and other... fluids. It's enough to give your personal wealth a significant boost. The rest of the contents are unfortunately ruined. They were simply too fragile for the crate to be forced open the way it was. It looks like the remains of an ancient shield and some sort of long-bladed weapon. They might be repairable, but not here. In the bottom of the crate, under the gold, is another key. It's identical to the first one, with one exception - the rune etched into the key's handle. It looks like the two keys must be a matched set.

"Well that happened," Verin grumbled with her hands on her hips. "This place is huge... feels like we'll never find the Trogs at this rate."
Nov 10, 2023 6:45 pm
There's not much more to see in this room. After you gather up as much of the gold as you can carry, you can either head back to the room with the pool or continue on around the corner. If you do that, you'll come to the original hallway again, approaching the first room from the opposite side from which you left. There's a small alcove before you get there though, and in the alcove is another rotting trog - this time decomopsing naturally, and not as far along, so with any luck, he won't be as... potent - and a door - with four nearly-matching keyholes. Two of the keys you already have.

S'sylin, his mood drastically improved after finding a stash of gold and some broken antiques, took a look at the door.
"One would wonder what sort of door requires four keys, which are then left around close by and unattended.." he mused. If this was an ancient door, he did not have high hopes for finding the remaining two keys. Still, it warranted continuing.

He also took note of the other dead trog. Perhaps its head would collect the bounty...

"Yeah, that's kind of weird... feels needlessly overcomplicated, y'know?"

Verin looks around and shrugs. "Where to next?"
Nov 15, 2023 11:54 pm
"The other door." The Dark Dragonborn decided. It made the most sense to find more keys, if anything..
Nov 16, 2023 12:01 am
Verin nods and makes her way to the door S'sylin had indicated, attempting to open it carefully.

OOC:
I need to clarify which door we're talking about here. It's possible it's my fault for not being clear enough, but as of right now, the only door you haven't opened is the one that needs the four keys. There is a door that you didn't go through from earlier though - the one that leads to the room with the pool in the middle. Alternatively, if you want to try to open the door without all the keys, that's fine too, but it'll need a dc 15 arcana check.

Falconloft says:
There's two stone doors, one on either side of the room, and they are also massive, but counterweighted, so that they'll swing open easily if given a good push. The door to the left has seen a bit more use it seems than the one on the right.
We took the one on the left before, so now we want to take the one on the right.

OOC:
Oh. Gotcha. This is what happens when I sleep.
There is not much to be found here, although you regret even finding as much as you did. There's the corpses of two kobolds here, although age and other details are impossible to tell because of the way they died. It appears as if they were tortured to death. Whatever happened happened a long time ago though, judging by the decay. Most likely, these two were unfortunate enough to be trapped down here when the trogs originally arrived. Perhaps they were the ones who hid all these keys? At any rate, this explains how the troglodytes knew how to find the kobolds.

On the other side of the room there's a broken-down steel door. The hinges were damaged with acid and then it was kicked or beaten in. Beyond that is dark...
OOC:
For purposes of complete openess, there is still a puzzle down here, but this is the way you go if you just don't care about it, which is okay with me. You can always come back later if you'd rather, or not at all.
Nov 23, 2023 10:04 pm
"This leads away. Before we go, I wish to see if we can find the last keys.."
He would like to head to the room with the pool..
Nov 23, 2023 10:47 pm
"Yeah, I mean we're here. May as well. After you." Verin will follow along wherever the Dragonborn leads.
Nov 24, 2023 7:09 pm
From somewhere, light is filtering into the pool, reflecting through it and out to you. The light's probably magical in origin given how far down you are, but you've heard of some ancient cultures that were quite adept at bending sunlight with mirrors and such too. Whichever it is, the pool is well-lit, and because of that, you can tell it's quite deep, too. Far down at the bottom is another key. The water's soft movements seem to cause it to wave back and forth as if its a piece of ribbon.
OOC:
Getting to that key and back out with it will take a DC 15 Athletics check.
Nov 24, 2023 7:34 pm
"I'm not much of a swimmer," Veein admits as she peers into the depths of the pool. "You any good, S'sylin?" She picks up a small hunk of rock from the floor and tosses it into the water with a "ker-plunk!"
Nov 24, 2023 8:11 pm
"Naturally." The dragonborn replied without modesty. Still, he carefully looked in the pond to see if there was something living in it that might take offense to his intrusion before he jumped in..

Can't you just magic the key up from... Astrid, or Phaeani as she likes to be called stops herself as S'sylin dives into the water. She is a full-blooded elf who always wears a pair of smoke-coloured glasses. Even this deep underground. Some would call her an elven heritage nerd as she had spent hours and hours with the drow texts. But then again, rumours are that House d'Phiarlan, the house of shadows, gave her the scholarship to Morgrave University.
She prefers to talk, think, sneak, cast spells and lock picking than to fight an opponent with cold steel
