The Island

An island sits close to the far shore of the river and has a haunted fortress and cemetery
Nov 29, 2022 9:41 pm
The island itself houses a large fortress that you learned was manned by undead soldier that are to not be attacked unless you wish to die a horrible death and gain an afterlife as their prisoner. The fortress itself is safe enough as long as you obey the undead soldiers, some of which can talk, and do not break any of its rules. A few scouts have stayed the night but none enjoyed the experience or wish to talk of it.
The cemetery on the north end of the island is where you will find most of the undead that need to be destroyed. More powerful undead are located deeper into the cemetery. Occasionally a few undead wander off so be ready for trouble anywhere on the island.
Your orders are to sweep the shoreline as you head north then circle around the cemetary taking out any of the wandering undead. Entering the cemetery itself is up to you but does increase the likelyhood of finding undead with items of interest to the scholars who will pay you a bonus if you turn the items over to them.

A small green lizard appears on a shipment container in front of Degs. It cocks its head to the side staring at the Goblin.
"Where da 'ells you been hidin'.?" Degs asks, playfully scolding the reptile.
Degs fishes a small pouch from his pocket that at closer inspection would be moving of it's own volition. He reaches into the pouch and pulls out a wriggling insect and offers it to the lizard.
Jus' keep an eye out. I don't want any surprises.
The lizard scampers off, stealth fully boarding the boat ahead of the party.

Fascinated I see Deggs pet his lizard.
"Master Deggs. You havn't introduced us to your friend. What's his name?", I ask.
While Deggs feeds his friend I try to evaluate our situation. I squint my eyes and let them wander over the environment, I try to catch noises with my ears and scents with my nose.

Nixly scratches her head, confused.
"I don’t think I understand. Do we have to kill people who are almost dead, because they're not dead enough? Who establishes the levels of deadness? I personally respect them for challenging conventions. I mean, the traditional dead bodies tend to stay still, but times change. Who says a dead person can't take a walk from time to time? Maybe we are exaggerating. What's more…"
Nixly gets distracted by Degs feeding his lizard. She applauds, hopping happly.
"Me too, me too, let me feed him."

"Interesting perspective," Eddisham acknowledges Nixly's statements, "but we're being paid to kill the dead. Which is both humorous and sad, a kind of tragicomic mission. An-yway, I have a little gimmick that I'm curious whether it will work on the (air quotes)un(air quotes) dead."
He shows off his Too-True Mirror.
With the party filling up I have been reviewing everyone's sheet. The minor Magic item is not intended for combat use. So if you use this out of combat it is fine as is but if you try and use it in combat I will say they have advantage if it works at all. You could however use it to create a surprise round before combat starts.

The party begins heading north while keeping the shoreline in sight. As you walk you note that though the sky is mostly clear it apprears slightly hazy. It looks as if there is smoke from a distant fire, though you smell nothing. This gives the sunlight and everything on the island a faded and dull appearance.
The island is covered in thin woods with large meadows and an ocasiona thicket. Most of the leaves on the trees looks slightly wilted but still have hints of green. The bushes are a bit better and most of the grass looks to be almost healthy given the time of year.
You speculate the plant life conditions are likely due to the undead. The absence of any large animals is not too unexpctd on an island but the lack or small animals other than some birds makes the sickly vegitation all the more depressing.

The haze in the air has no point of origin, smell, or other aspect. Your assumption is that it is related to whatever is causing the undead.

Nearing the northermost tip of the island you turn east, as you had been directed and moved into thicker, though still sickly, foliage. The trees now form ocasional thickets and the bushes ocasionaly bar easy passage.
Lets get a awareness Test from everyone. Shautz has advantage, 3d6, form his survivor trait and Degs does likewise from his hunter Trade.

As you walk along Nixly animatedly chatters away but is still the first to notice movement ahead and softens her voice pointing out the area. You "wander" behind some bushes where you pause to search the area closer and count out 6 shambling and lurching figures. Most are rotting corpses but there is a pair of just skeletons in their midst. The group of undead is heading in your general direction but are erratic in how ther move around trees and bushes though they always regroup.
I still want awareness Test from the rest. Let me know any preparations you want to make before they get closer.

Still bothered by the earlier vision of a doom shroud hanging over his day, Eddisham takes a deep and anxious breath as he sees the undead approaching. He tries to look out for any other dangers, too.
Just for laughs, he readies the Too-True Mirror in his left hand while he balances the shillelagh in his right hand. Maybe even the deceased have regrets that could distract them from violence?

"Dead friends, we come in peace." Nixly said to the undead approaching them and then seemed to hesitate. "No, wait, that's not true." she raised both hands. "We don't want to hurt you" she doubted again. "No, that's not true either." She shrugged. "F@#k it."
She readied her bow and took aim at one of the undead.
"We don't want to bother you, but we need you deader."

Everyone, except Nixly searched the area carefully and is getting ready to take on the pack of undead. You determined there are no other creatures nearby. The pack of undead, though not loud, are rather clumsy and their movements are easily tracked by sound alone. Determining there are no other packs around, or anything else you are waiting the opportune time to attack the pack when Nixly lets you all know, now is the time.
As soon as Nixly begins speaking the pack all turn to look at her then begin heading directly in your direction.
Bow ready Nixly takes aim. Fire at will
Round 1
The undead pack is currently Far from you and can only be attacked with magic or ranged weapons. At their current pace they will be on you in 2 rounds.

Eddisham tries to get tree roots to trip up the undead, make them slower so that the shooters have more time before the shamblers get to melee range.
