The Island

Nov 29, 2022 9:39 pm
An island sits close to the far shore of the river and has a haunted fortress and cemetery
Nov 29, 2022 9:41 pm
The island itself houses a large fortress that you learned was manned by undead soldier that are to not be attacked unless you wish to die a horrible death and gain an afterlife as their prisoner. The fortress itself is safe enough as long as you obey the undead soldiers, some of which can talk, and do not break any of its rules. A few scouts have stayed the night but none enjoyed the experience or wish to talk of it.
The cemetery on the north end of the island is where you will find most of the undead that need to be destroyed. More powerful undead are located deeper into the cemetery. Occasionally a few undead wander off so be ready for trouble anywhere on the island.

Your orders are to sweep the shoreline as you head north then circle around the cemetary taking out any of the wandering undead. Entering the cemetery itself is up to you but does increase the likelyhood of finding undead with items of interest to the scholars who will pay you a bonus if you turn the items over to them.

A small green lizard appears on a shipment container in front of Degs. It cocks its head to the side staring at the Goblin.

"Where da 'ells you been hidin'.?" Degs asks, playfully scolding the reptile.

Degs fishes a small pouch from his pocket that at closer inspection would be moving of it's own volition. He reaches into the pouch and pulls out a wriggling insect and offers it to the lizard.

Jus' keep an eye out. I don't want any surprises.

The lizard scampers off, stealth fully boarding the boat ahead of the party.
Nov 29, 2022 9:43 pm
Fascinated I see Deggs pet his lizard.
"Master Deggs. You havn't introduced us to your friend. What's his name?", I ask.

While Deggs feeds his friend I try to evaluate our situation. I squint my eyes and let them wander over the environment, I try to catch noises with my ears and scents with my nose.

Nixly scratches her head, confused.

"I don’t think I understand. Do we have to kill people who are almost dead, because they're not dead enough? Who establishes the levels of deadness? I personally respect them for challenging conventions. I mean, the traditional dead bodies tend to stay still, but times change. Who says a dead person can't take a walk from time to time? Maybe we are exaggerating. What's more…"

Nixly gets distracted by Degs feeding his lizard. She applauds, hopping happly.

"Me too, me too, let me feed him."
Nov 30, 2022 12:38 am
"Interesting perspective," Eddisham acknowledges Nixly's statements, "but we're being paid to kill the dead. Which is both humorous and sad, a kind of tragicomic mission. An-yway, I have a little gimmick that I'm curious whether it will work on the (air quotes)un(air quotes) dead."

He shows off his Too-True Mirror.

With the party filling up I have been reviewing everyone's sheet. The minor Magic item is not intended for combat use. So if you use this out of combat it is fine as is but if you try and use it in combat I will say they have advantage if it works at all. You could however use it to create a surprise round before combat starts.

As everyone looks at the mirror your lifes deepest failing passing into your thoughts, momenterily causing you to be dazed.
Nov 30, 2022 3:33 am
The party begins heading north while keeping the shoreline in sight. As you walk you note that though the sky is mostly clear it apprears slightly hazy. It looks as if there is smoke from a distant fire, though you smell nothing. This gives the sunlight and everything on the island a faded and dull appearance.
The island is covered in thin woods with large meadows and an ocasiona thicket. Most of the leaves on the trees looks slightly wilted but still have hints of green. The bushes are a bit better and most of the grass looks to be almost healthy given the time of year.
You speculate the plant life conditions are likely due to the undead. The absence of any large animals is not too unexpctd on an island but the lack or small animals other than some birds makes the sickly vegitation all the more depressing.

Nov 30, 2022 12:57 pm
The haze in the air has no point of origin, smell, or other aspect. Your assumption is that it is related to whatever is causing the undead.
Dec 1, 2022 2:31 am
Nearing the northermost tip of the island you turn east, as you had been directed and moved into thicker, though still sickly, foliage. The trees now form ocasional thickets and the bushes ocasionaly bar easy passage.

As you walk along Nixly animatedly chatters away but is still the first to notice movement ahead and softens her voice pointing out the area. You "wander" behind some bushes where you pause to search the area closer and count out 6 shambling and lurching figures. Most are rotting corpses but there is a pair of just skeletons in their midst. The group of undead is heading in your general direction but are erratic in how ther move around trees and bushes though they always regroup.

I still want awareness Test from the rest. Let me know any preparations you want to make before they get closer.

Still bothered by the earlier vision of a doom shroud hanging over his day, Eddisham takes a deep and anxious breath as he sees the undead approaching. He tries to look out for any other dangers, too.

Just for laughs, he readies the Too-True Mirror in his left hand while he balances the shillelagh in his right hand. Maybe even the deceased have regrets that could distract them from violence?

"Dead friends, we come in peace." Nixly said to the undead approaching them and then seemed to hesitate. "No, wait, that's not true." she raised both hands. "We don't want to hurt you" she doubted again. "No, that's not true either." She shrugged. "F@#k it."

She readied her bow and took aim at one of the undead.

"We don't want to bother you, but we need you deader."

Everyone, except Nixly searched the area carefully and is getting ready to take on the pack of undead. You determined there are no other creatures nearby. The pack of undead, though not loud, are rather clumsy and their movements are easily tracked by sound alone. Determining there are no other packs around, or anything else you are waiting the opportune time to attack the pack when Nixly lets you all know, now is the time.
As soon as Nixly begins speaking the pack all turn to look at her then begin heading directly in your direction.

The skeleton is struck by the the two blows and the bones scatter as it collapses.

As stillness settles around you and you take stock you notice that the tops of the fortress battlements can be seen over the tree tops. You were told the cemetery is along the river shore almost directly north of the fortress.
Dec 9, 2022 3:40 am
"Which way were we going?" Eddisham asks the others. "Is the cemetery this side of the fortress or beyond?"
Dec 9, 2022 4:42 am
Degs looks around at his fellow party members, accessing any damage or wounds.

He glances over at Shmautz and says, "Ziggy, the lizards name is Ziggy. He's not really a pet...I mean he does his own thing mostly but he's stuck around for awhile now and we kind of look out for each other'. I dunno where he's run off to this time, sometimes he finds things even I miss when I'm huntin'"

Degs searches for anything left behind by the vanquished foes.

"Well Eddisham, Degs muses as he rifles through rotted flesh and shattered bone fragments, if we follow the shore a bit north it should take us to the Cemetery. I dunno how I feel about this cursed place though...seems someone should have figured out what is causing all this mess here? If ya let an infection like this fester too long...it tends to spread.."
Dec 9, 2022 7:23 pm
Nixly seemed slightly concerned by Degs's words.

"That's not good. We should be careful. Personally, I prefer to be one hundred percent alive. Apparently, being half dead affects your ability to dance, let alone sing. The undead don't seem to be able to carry a tune."
Dec 9, 2022 9:31 pm
I clean my dagger and put it back under my robe again. Then I turn around to the others.

"
I'm really grateful that I had been able to meet Ziggy.
Otherwise I would never have met you, Degs. I'm glad that you've been next to me.
"

I hold out my paw to the honorable goblin.

"
In fact, I'm glad that all of you are here.
I don't want to imagine what would have happened, if I was out here with bigoted humans.
Thank you. I highly appreciate, that we're fully alive
"

, and I twinkle towards Nixly.

"
Eddisham, I don't know where this cemetery exactly is.
However, I see wisdom in master Degs' words. Why are the guys from the camp constantly sending scouts over to this place?
Any ideas?
And: what's next? I know that we're supposed to clean up here and that we are just a hired 'cleaning service'. But my life is too precious to me as that I would just gamble with it.
Adventure? Yes. Suicide squad? No.
This was just a small encounter and I already took wounds. If this gets more dangerous ...
"

I leave the sentence unfinished.

"
... I think we have to be smart. Or at least smarter than a horde of undead corpse. They'll outnumber us sooner or later. Maybe we should find a way to get rid of them without putting ourselves in danger.
Should we take a rest in the castle? Maybe we can overhear something?
"
Dec 9, 2022 10:30 pm
"I am puzzled by the strictures about the fortress," Eddisham comments. "Its denizens are undead, like those we just killed, except that they do no harm to the living and should be treated with respect. Something about this situation does not make sense. Why should we kill the unliving who roam about the island, but behave as guests to those in the fortress? Why should we respect the fortress dwellers, but scourge those who walk about? I think we - and the camp - may be pawns in some weird breathless politics."
Dec 9, 2022 11:06 pm
The skeletons left a couple of rusty swords that must have been maintained by the same magic that animated them for they have rusted beyond use in mere moments.
Dec 12, 2022 9:44 pm
Degs quickly drops the rusty sword he was examining as it begins to wither and decay in his hands.

"Well, I don't think we'll be findin' much loot here. We can continue clearing some more of the island and look for clues mayhaps lead to the solving the riddle of this island? Or maybe the safer option is to ask around? Maybe some other 'venturers know a thing or two?" I 'dun think will have much to show for with the small amount of undead we have destroyed here though, may be too soon to head off the island just yet. Shall we take a vote?"

Degs holds the amulet around his kneck and it begins to emit a soft blue hue.
OOC:
He is attempting to get a feel for which way Ziggy may have wandered.
Dec 13, 2022 2:55 am
Degs pauses for a moment and locates Ziggy poking his head out from between some tree roots and scoops him up as the party wanders on aiming for a point north of the fortress to get a lay of the area between the cemetery and its walls. As you move on you avoid making any excess noise and listening for any other movement. As you get closer you notice that the area around the fortress is clear of tress and any brush above the kneed of a human. The walls are over 30' tall of stone with 50' towers and a gatehouse on the western wall. The tops of the walls, towers, and gatehouse are all manned by fixed and patrolling guards. A squad of armored guards stand in front of the open gates to the fortress interior.
You finally find a small thicket where you pause to look north to the cemetery. The cemetery begins over a hundred yards north of the fortress, 50 yards beyond its cleared area. The forest has grown into the cemetery but this is obviously more recent as the trees are more sparse and thinner. The cemetery has a wide variety of burial stiles from simple cairns to headstones and even mausoleums. The larger and more elaborate markers and structures become more frequent further to the north. The cemetery continues up to and beyond the shore. Some of the taller structures appears small islands in the river with a few even standing and entire story up out of its waters.

"
The fortress is safe for us to visit, isn't it? I think, we should go there first. As you say, master Degs: maybe some other's know a thing or two.

I don't see the benefit in just heading over to that graveyard and see what happens. Even if we don't get any new information in the castle, we possibly can get onto the wall and have a better sight on the things happening down there.

Maybe there's nothing in the cemetery, maybe there are way more of those undead than we think, maybe there are even more dangerous creatures and ... maybe they have some sort of rhythm between day and night. So we just have to be safe in the castle and keep an eye on the cemetery to study what's going on there.

What do you think?
"

I wait for the others to decide.
Dec 15, 2022 1:58 pm
"I am curious about these hospitable undead soldiers in the fortress," Eddisham says. "What is the deal with that? I think we should find out whether they're talkative, I don't remember any info on that."
Dec 16, 2022 3:26 am
With Shmautz and Eddisham both expressing an interest in the fortress the party heads over. moving into the clearing that surround the fortress you find the west gate open but manned by a squad of 4 undead in plate armor. As you approach the undead turn their helmed heads to watch and you hear one call back into the open gate. A tall pale man in leather armor and an officers uniform walks forward to greet you. As you near you notice his eyes are black with red pupils and he greets you with a smile, revealing unusually pronounced canine teeth.
Welcome. The commander has ordered that the courtyard and smithy are free for your unescorted use. However before entering each of you must give your parole not to attack any of the guards, enter restricted areas which are guarded, or damage the fortress or any of it's facilities. If you will give me your bond to obey these restrictions you may enter. And he gestures into the fortress while glancing at you with a bit of curiosity and expectancy. His accent is unusual, sounding archaic and formal, but not too different from the common speech you all use.
Dec 16, 2022 2:55 pm
"So you lot do talk!" Eddisham says cheerfully. "I have so many questions. Will anyone answer them?"
Dec 16, 2022 8:00 pm
The man(?) chuckles at your comment. If you have questions I best take you to the commander. To do that I must insist you swear to do no harm to the fortress or it's defenders. Do you so swear?
Dec 16, 2022 8:53 pm
"Of course!" answers Eddisham, "I respect the laws of hospitality."
Dec 16, 2022 9:25 pm
The others agree, some more cautiously than others after the Lieutenant assures you that your oaths only hold while in the fortress and are in return guarantee your status as a protected guest. While a guest the rules are simple in that you can stay as long as you like in the courtyard and the smithy, which is off of the western courtyard and has been set aside for "guest" use. The magic forge in the smithy keeps it warm at all times. You must not interfere with the undead or try or break anything you find.

The Lieutenant escorts you counter clockwise around the west side of the keep and points out a door on the east exterior wall and indicates it is the smithy and the best place for you to stay and rest while here. Don't enter any of the adjoining rooms though. You are only permitted the courtyard and smithy, except under escort

You notice most of the defenders are skeletal like the gate guards but most wear chainmail. There are also small squads of ghostly soldiers that patrol the area either walking or floating high in the air. You estimate there to be several hundred undead in the fortress, none of which look to be as simple as zombies or the basic skeletons.

Entering the keep you pass more full plate guards in front of a door that leads to the keeps main hall. It has a cross shape to it and you are taken to the middle where there is a large table placed and several undead confer with each other in low voices that stop as soon as you enter. Turning to look as you and receiving a signal from the Lieutenant approaches. Behind him another of the undead stares at you then waves a claw like hand causing mist to fill the intervening space cutting of your view of the area beyond the lone approaching undead.

The commander gives a formal bow in return and somehow conveys a sad expression on his gaunt spectral face. I do not encourage destroying the undead. I would prefer they simply be released but the nature of the undead magics makes this difficult. I understand the clerics of the new gods have some power to restrain them but the nexus ritual that awakens the undead has not located making breaking it beyond your high cleric and wizard. The undead are our former country men, or at least the bodies of them. As I understand it not all undead have their sourls returned to them, as we have had done to us. I believe you were sent to destroy them to keep their numbers down and as a form of initiation or trial.

What I wanted to say: Shmautz wants to know more about the weird situation. There's the Camp where we've landed, the island (?) we're on now, the attack from the undead, the cemetery, and the fortress. Also I'd like to know more about Ferran Martinel.

Commander Ferran Martinel
Turned his eyeless sockets filled with flickering motes of ghostlight onto Shmautz the commander replies I never asked your people to kill them but neither will I forbit it. Their state is lamentable and they should be released as they may. If this is done through violence so be it. It would be better to find the cause of their continued formation and remove it, thereby stemming the tide of their creation.
OOC:
The base camp is on one side of the river and run by the Expedition. Its stated purpose is archeological. They are looking for the wealth and knowledge of the Dawn age. The fortress is on the island which is almost to the far side of the river. The Expedition leaders and fortress commander have no formal agreement but they both acknowledge that the continued creation of more undead is not a good thing.

Commander Ferran Martinel
As you ask additional question questions the commander tells you a bit of his story When the ritual to raise the dead her on the island was first enacted by the necromancers, servants of a power from the Dawn War, they used a tool from the Dawn age and tied their ritual to the magic of this fortress. Both the tool and this fortress survived what I now understand you call the Shattering almost completely intact. By basing their ritual on this fortress they were able to tap into its enchantments that draw energy from the world around us. This ensured the ritual would be maintained long after they completed it.
However one of the enchantments of the fortress ensures that as long as we maintained our honor even death was no barrier to maintaining our oaths. Thus we were created free of their control and many of us retain much of our memories of our lives. The other undead from the cemetery are former citizens of the city we swore to protect. While we will ensure they do not harm the fortress, as we are sworn to do, the men under my command have of mixed feelings about destroying the forms, cursed as they may be, of those we swore to protect. And I, I have not made up my mind.
The first of your comrades that came here disrupted the that initial ritual and slew the necromancers that were here at the time. However the ritual has not failed completely, due we suspect to a secondary ritual believed to be in the cemetery, causing the cemetery to continually bring forth more of those that should remain at rest. The magics of the fortress maintain us here as well. Again my men are not united in their desires and I have not made a decision on whether to seek means to return to our rightful slumber or if there is something else we must do before we can do so. The fact that the fortress magics and our honor are both keeping us here in this state and both are dedicated to the defense of the Mortal Realm and the People are the crux of our dilemma. If simply destroying the other undead and what remains of the ritual or even the fortress itself would fulfill out oaths then we would feel compelled to do so. Yet all we feel compelled to do at this time is Guard and Wait.
Dec 18, 2022 4:01 pm
Eddisham attends to the captain's story with intense interest. He is not forgetful of the dragon's instructions. He almost thinks that he can feel its unseen mark pulse in his palm.

"Then would ... if we were to find a thing in the cemetery that drove these undead, it would not bother you to have us destroy it?"

A thoughtful expression is conveyed and the commander replies after a moment Disrupting the source of the spell creating the undead is important. If another ritual circle is all that is involved there is not concern other than what object or surface the circle is made upon. I leave it to your judgement and will not hold you responsible for things you do not know of or understand. I only ask you look and think before brashly destroying things.
Dec 20, 2022 1:00 pm
Eddisham turns to his comrades. "I think that we should rest here - an evening more or less will make no difference to the situation - and then tomorrow morning go out into the cemetery looking for the thing that causes the mindless undead to rise."
Dec 20, 2022 3:38 pm
After asking any additional questions you are escorted back out and show to the smithy. The heat from the magical foirge spreads warmth throughout the smithy. Yet somehow you still feel a slight chill deep within. Nevertheless your talk with the commander calmed your hearts and worries enough to let you rest, though it is agreed that keeping a watch is a good idea "just to stay in practice". Early the next morning you wake, eat and set out.

Where to?

Did the resting restore the HP?
"
Aaaaahhh. That rest was good. And the breakfast as well.

My friends, before we get out into the cemetery, just a few things that I still have on my mind.

The guys in the expedition camp pay us. For 'cleaning' the area and find 'stuff', right? But they've not explicitly said, that cleaning equals killing. If you can manage to end whatever the reason for the undead is, we still adhere to our contract. Additionally we do Commander Martinell a favour? This could also be beneficial for us. And if we don't act like complete morons, we maybe can achieve all that without getting from one battle into the next. Because, let's be honest: there will be a moment where we might not be as lucky as yesterday. And I don't want get get seriously harmed.
What do you say?

We can discuss this on the way to the cemetery - maybe it's safer at this time of the day.

Yes you are healed. A full nights rest, at least 6 hours, will heal all wounds
Dec 20, 2022 9:22 pm
Eddisham smiles at Shmautz, and also slow-blinks his eyes in the way that most felines appreciate. "I think you speak good sense," he says. "I did not intend to churn through an endless sequence of undead. Evading as many as we can, while searching for their cause, seems wise."
OOC:
Previous night, Eddisham asked Commander Martinel what kind of signs, i.e. physical characteristics or manifestations, might point toward a ritual circle of the sort the commander mentioned; also, would there be particular types of materials or architecture that would be more favorable for making such a circle? Is there a minimum or maximum size for a ritual circle?
Dec 20, 2022 10:14 pm
A ritual of this nature that keeps changing would require someone to constantly change and/or renew it's energies. A small temporary site could be created each time the spell was cast allowing it to move around the cemetery. However when the clergy and wizard from the base camp came to disrupt it they found no signs of this in the cemetery. This leaves the alternative, a larger more complex ritual that can be changed as needed. It is likely underground somewhere but they have not found any entrances to underground facilities in the cemetery. The fortress has some but it has been searched thoroughly, both by the guardians as well as the cleric and wizard from your camp, declaring it free of any outside influence at this time.
The commander suggests looking for any hidden passageways underground and any structure large enough to house stairs as a good point to start your search.
Dec 23, 2022 7:05 am
I blink back at Eddisham and feel, that I am in good company. This makes me confident for the coming day.

I constantly try to have an eye on the environment to avoid being suprised by the undead or getting into an ambush.

"
Where shall we start? Let's say we're looking for a party of human-sized beeings. They might be a handful and maybe - I don't know much about magic and wizardry - they need some tools. So they'll have some luggage and guys who carry it.

Whatever the entrance might look like, it must have a certain size. Even if it's hidden.
Maybe Master Deggs' friendly little lizzard can help us finding such spots?

So, y'all. What do you think? Which building or part of that cemetery we are about to inspect first?
Together, with all our skills, I'm confident, that we can find something!
"

I turn around to the party and purr.
Dec 26, 2022 5:18 pm
From what you saw of the cemetery there are few structures out of the water that might possibly have room inside, all being single room mausoleums. A couple of the structures in the river are much larger and even have multiple stories. These would definitely be able to hold a full ritual circle.
Dec 29, 2022 5:14 pm
"It seems like we need a boat," Eddisham says. "Unless the river is really shallow."
Dec 29, 2022 7:38 pm
The river has obviously worn away at the ground around the submerged structures but only slants gradually. You could wade out quite far, dozens of yards at least, to the north and east. The slope is steeper to the west, towards the swift currents in the rivers middle. Most stretched on the western edge on the submerged cemetery are in ruins as the river citing wages them away.

"Sure," says Eddisham. He looks down at his nice leather boots then looks at the water. "I don't know what's might be on the bottom, so I'll keep my boots on." He begins to wade out toward the nearest structure, using his shillelagh to keep balance and to probe for holes.

You begin making your way into the cool waters of the river. The decision to keep your boods on, though possibly anoying later, is proved wise as your feet trod on irregular masonry hidden in the pants and mud. You soon reach the closest structure, a simple 1 story crypt with a simple but sturdy design and a few worn designs and glyphs on it.

Looking over the words etched into the structures most are details of th inturned individuals or families while others appear to be prayers or enchantments and wards to preserve and protect the structures on thei occupands.
As he reads on he gets somewhat distracted when he find some related markers and absentmindedly begins to follow a pattern only to find then end of the family line. Blinking he looks up, realizing he wandered a bit from Shmautz. As he looks around he notices a two story stucture with openings on the second floor, well above the water line. Having noted this before from the shore he is about to turn and rejoin Shmautz when he notices that some of the vegitation on the structure has been disturbed. Almost as if something has climbed up or down the structure repeatedly . . .
Jan 9, 2023 3:05 am

I see evidence of movement, Eddisham replies, see, the vines are disturbed and torn, the stones of the wall are scuffed clean of moss. He looks with concern up at the balcony. I think that something dwells in there and comes out from time to time. It seems strange to live in a cemetery. Maybe whatever or whoever does that, is linked to the roaming undead. He cracks his knuckles. Let's get up in there I guess?
Jan 14, 2023 3:07 pm
Moving closer to the structure, Shmautz stifles complaints about the increased water depth, there are plenty of stone work features to climb up to the 2nd floor. The structure is quite big with possibly multiple room or a single large one on the 1st floor and the 2nd looks to be a single room with either a high vaulted ceiling or a potential 3rd floor or attic space? The plants are unusually thick around this structure concealing most of it from examination. The stairs leading up to the doorway are wide smooth marble leading to a heavy double door that is oddly exposed as if the vegetation refuses to grow over or even near it. Each door depicts scenes of the natural world with the right side covered in a mosaic of plant life while the left has a wide variety of animals and the archway around the two covered in images of mushrooms and moss.
You easily scale your way to the 2nd story balcony along the pathway worn to the thicker vines and root past the lush leaves and flowers around you. Peering over the balcony Eddisham sees a single room with a balcony on each of the 4 sides. The balconies all are partitioned off from the outside by metal latices twisted and hammered into the shapes of plants. Only the one between this balcony and the top of its archway have been roughly bent and twisted to create an easy passage into the interior.

The dust andd mud that covered the floor has been disturbed but little else. Looking around the room you see a likness carved into the ceiling in the center of the rool. The face appears elfin but has a wildness that is enhances by two fangs barely visible and animal like ears poking out of here hair. Around th rooms are several large caskets of odd sizes and shapes. Tho top of each depicst a creature with the sides showing that same creature performing various things with the woman above.
As you circle the single smoth floored roomyou find stairs leading down behind the smallest of the stone caskets. The mud on the stairs is also disturbed with foot ptints. A weak breeze bring the sent of earth and a hit of fire from below.

With the witchlight illuminating your way you dessend into to the first floor. The magical light reveals bars at the base of the stairs that have been ripped appart to allow passage up and down. The room beyond is simpe bare stone with a few tablets allong the walls. Sevreal have been smashed, form the inside, revealing them to be burrial niches. The stone from the shattered covers litters the muddy floor of what must have once been an impressive chamber. From the names on the tables there seem to be several families that used this building and you note a few names cross over indicating that there were some intermarrying between them. As you look around the room you see the main door stil intackt but behind the stairs you just came down is another set of stairs that have had the stone covering forcefully removed to grant acess to the deeper level of this mauselium.

As Shmautz examines the room he recognizes any of the names but takes note of the family names. Shahro, Tromemre, and Gallois. Leaning your forehead against one of the tablets a series of images of a boy advancing through manhood to old age passes through your thought only to be shattered by a dark flash. Smaautz sees a large figure stepping over the ruined bars followed by a cloaked figure with a staff. The robed figure "says" something and the hulking figure continues its destructive descent by ripping the gate to the lower stairs apart. An un known "time" later Smautz "sees" darkness seeping up out of the lower stairwell as coldness seeps into his body and the vision breaks.
Bracing yourselves you gingerly step over the ruins of the gate and head down the stairs. At the bottom is another door. This one is solid metal though the lock holding it in place is twisted allowing you to push it open. As the light spills into the room beyond you see movement to the side as a massive paw slams thought the little light and into Eddisham.
Eddisham blinks his eyes as he comes back from his vision. His hand just about to push the door open and he reaches out stopping his companion. Though the door is still in the doorway its shattered lock has doubtlessly allowed your light into the room alerting its current occupant.
Jan 23, 2023 3:45 pm
Eddisham takes a step back. He gestures to Shmautz to do so also. "Dangerous beast!" he hisses. "Ambush!"
Jan 26, 2023 6:59 am
Feeling like being somewhere far away behind a dark curtain, I hear Eddisham's voice. His words are pulling me back to reality. Leaving the coldness behind, I cut the surface to my consciousness.

I leap back off the door, staring at it.
I shiver, and an angry squeak leaves my throat.

"What was that!?"

I draw my dagger, knowing that it is little help against otherworldly powers. Though I feel a little safer feeling the handle in my paw.

"There's darkness behind it. I mean ... not just the absence of light, but a deep and cold darkness. I saw figures passing this door in a dream ..." ... and I whisper the facts I was able to recall to Eddisham.
OOC:
Sorry for the delay.

Are we really ambushed, or was that a "passive magical alarm system"?

What is the impression we currently have, despite the visions of what might be behind the door?

Eddisham is a bit suprised that Shmautz shared his vision. That hardly ever happens.

But is there something special (besides its magical alarm-alike mechanism), that we can use?
Doubtful I look around.

FYI you only need to use an action to move if you are traveling more than 10' or so, bassically changing zones. I am not enforcing zones but will be tracking them and just let you know if you are close enough or need to move

I really try to keep it in mind, but get carried away by the story and time between posts. GamersPlane is such a great platform, but I'm a 'visually-functioning' being. Sort of a graphical representation would help me a lot. Anyway, that must not be your problem.

"Eddisham, can you light a spark?"
, I shout, while fumbling with my bag to get the lantern-oil out.
I try to 'bob and weave' around the creature to stay out of sight and reach.

"It shall either burn or slip out and break his bones."

Yes, moving around so as not to be hit is an EVADE

Does that mean we've overlooked the other guy and he was watching us burning his "pet"?

Eddisham feels darkness still emanating from further down the crypt tunnels . . .

"Whew," Eddisham says to Shmautz, "for just a moment I thought someone was standing in the corner watching us ... but there's nobody there! This place is messing with my head." He looks toward each of the three doors in turn. Does anyone look different than the others?
Feb 3, 2023 8:43 pm
The stairs curled around so that this room is just below the 1st floor entry with both entrances about lined up. The doors head to the left, right, and back of the structure but underground. All 3 are closed. As you look around you realize this room has been cleaned, or the floor at least. Likely to allow the diagram to be placed directly onto the stone floor.

The two teams are encountering each other. The other pair was moving quietly enough that you did not notice them till they were just outside the door.
The door has swung closed but not latched as it was when Eddisham and Shmautz arrived
Feb 4, 2023 5:37 pm
Elph, a snake lad with the body proportions of an upright stoat, raises his hands and addresses the others "Hello hello. We are living we aren't corpse men."
Feb 4, 2023 7:51 pm
"Oh, hi," says Eddisham cheerfully, "nice to meet you I'm sure."
Feb 4, 2023 8:28 pm
I'm quite suprised by the sudden appearance. Snakes make me feel unconfortable and I feel the hair in my neck going wild.
OOC:
Shmautz is a cat-like creature and I just want to reflect the fact that he's afraid of snakes/lizards and such. However, he's a friendly fellow.

"Hello."
I answer. The fact that other living beings also found the way down here is a good sign.
So I try to be nice. My shoulders go down and I relax a little ...
I show my empty paws.

"Are you also Adventurers sent out from the base?"
Feb 4, 2023 10:20 pm
"Adventurers?" says Baruman "Yes, I guess that's us. They were worried about you, you were expected back a while ago"

An elf, he has come across before, but the strange cat creature is another race that he has never encountered. It looks friendly enough. It's fur is quite beautiful, but he manages to wrench his eyes away to look around the rest of the room. "Are we alone in here? Are there any of those corpse men about?"

Entering the room, his small duende figure moves quickly around the walls, examining and listening at each of the doors, all the while keeping a suspicious eye on the 2 scouts.

"My name is Baruman, and this is my friend Elph. Have you found anything of interest so far? Anything of value?"
Feb 5, 2023 12:17 am
"Hah, no, we are focused on finding a ritual circle that the Commander back at the fortress thinks may be causing these mindless undead to roam. We just dispatched an undead ogre, it was quite violent."
Feb 5, 2023 6:02 am
As you chat you hear faint sounds coming from the 3 other doors. Eddisham and Shmautz recognize the sounds of skeletons, having fought some on the island. The sounds are getting closer.
Feb 5, 2023 9:42 am
Taking up the pike, Baruman jams it into the ground in front of the doors from which the sounds seem loudest, and rests the other end against the door in an attempt to stop it from opening.
"Hopefully that will slow down these ones at least, so we don't have to deal with so many at once"
He draws his dagger and focuses on attacking the first undead that he sees.
Feb 5, 2023 3:41 pm
OOC:
From all 3 doors? Damn ...
"Bonesmen again!?", I sigh in disbelief.

"We should gather at the door to the stairway and slip out, before they overrun us. This would be one narrow passage for them. Any more ideas on how we could block the other doors?", I say whilse moving to the door and getting out my knife again.
OOC:

As Shmautz and Eddisham heard the noise - can we estimate the number of enemies?
Feb 5, 2023 6:42 pm
OOC:
@wilsric, What pike?
@tibbius,@tergolap Eddisham and Shmautz have mastered their primary weapons so have advantage on attacks using those from now on.
Baruman takes a stout wooden from his pack and wedges it under the door across from the entrance. There are multiple footsteps coming from beyond each door. You estimate 3 to 4 from the left and right with more than 4 beyond the now wedged central door.
Everyone like Shmautz's idea of fighting enemies only coming from a single passage sounds and quickly retreats back up the stairs to the first floor, leaving the door open to hear the enemies progress.

@wilsric AB13 is 20 from where the undead will amerge. Depending on how the fight progresses you may be alone and surounded or have to move to get back in the action. If you are looking form some high ground the half stairs at AB11 wil do that and not take you so far from the fight.

If yes, is there a statue or something we could tilt/toss/throw onto the enemies?
Feb 7, 2023 2:37 am
The first floor is comprised of a central open chamber with a dias to the east and smaller side chambers to the north and south. The stairs down go under the raise dias and there is room for two attackers, long weapons, like edishams Shillelaugh or ranged attacks, would be better suited but you can crouch down to swipe at them as they come up the stairs. There is noting loose to shift over and drop. The casket lids can be moved but are very heavy and it would take all of you to move one.

The last skeleton is quickly dispatched by the party. Upon the collapse of the last undead you feel a tremor through the ground and hear a soft and gentle woman's voice that possessed a strength and commanding quality calling you to from up the stairs. Brave adventurers, Come to me. I have information and gifts of gratitude to bestow upon you. But fist search the necromancer. He should have a magic item that I must investigate to aid you.
Feb 19, 2023 11:33 pm
The dagger plunged into the skeleton's body and a feeling of exaltation flooded Baruman as he watched it collapse to the ground. Finally these unnatural fiends are gone! The feeling quickly changed to a chill in his spine, then he realised This is no chill, the very ground itself is shaking

Just a few days before, the disembodied voice would have frozen Baruman to the ground with fear. Now he felt so numbed with the bizarre events of the last days, and the unworldly things that he had seen, that he searched the body, just as the voice had commanded.

The only thing on the necromancer is the old tattered leather cloak. Untying then removing the cloak you hold it and and a few pieces fall from it to the floor. With the robe removed it is plain to see there is nothing else on the necromancer.

Taing the tattered cloak up the stairs cautiously you move out of the dark crypts into the first floor that has some of the days sunlight filtering in though decorative gaps in the stone walls and from the staris to the 2nd floor. On the stairs continuing up to the 2nd floor you see a floating translucent woman. Around and behind her you see other spirits, of animals, plants, and fey. You feel a sence a serenity and vitality eminating from her.
Artenia Lien
Welcome and thank you. I am Artenia Lien. I was a keeper of the lands during the Great War. I know not what has traspired in recent times but my spirit was disturbed by a foul spell that sought to bind me in service several day gone by. I and my companions were able to resist but the necromancer defiled my ancestors remains tuning them into mindless undead servants. He continued to lay enchantments to enslave me and create more undead slaves. This pointing to the rotting leather cloak is one of his tools. May I have it a moment?
Feb 22, 2023 4:31 pm
Baruman felt a feeling of peace and tranquility wash over him, and all the effort of the previous fight seemed to vanish. In awe of this strangely beautiful apparition, he walked to the base of the stair, his eyes mainly cast downwards, only rarely being brave enough to flick up for another crew of the wondrous woman. When he reached the bottom step, he knelt, and held the tattered cloak with his arms out "Please, take this and do whatever you must to right this evil and allow the dead to rest"

Right out of one battle we meet this ... what is it anyway? I'm a little concerned, but the aura that floating woman has, revives me. And I hope Eddisham too, as he's taken some wounds.

I watch and listen, while Baruman hands over the cloak to the lady. But I also keep an eye on the party. We've just defeated skeleton after skeleton and also that robed figure. Somehow I believe it was luck, as our little group does not look like battle - tested mercenaries.

My whiskers twitch, I take a deep breath and purr. That calms me down. I even see some cat spirits behind the woman.

She reaches out and the cloak rises to hover next to her folded in light. Floating back up the stairs while facing you she gustures Come let me reward you first. The you can help my companions watch over me as I delve into the secrts of this necromancer.
As you move cautiosly up to the second floor you are startles as it no longer resembles a structure so much as a doorway to various lands. Each window or door to balcony is no longer barred and leads to a divverent vista. Mountans, plains, the ocean, caverns, a forrest, jungles, etc. Into and out of each of these poratls pass a variety of beasts ad plants fill the interior. All are vaguely discernable as spirits when they enter the structure but beyond the portals they look quite real.
Let me heal you first and green, blue, yellow, and red motes of light break off from various spirits and fall onto each of you Any wounds start to close and the fatigue of the batle is washed from you to be replaced with the urge to move about and roar! Then it passes and you see the lady peering at each of you.
You have yet to awaken your full potential. Let me help you with this. I shall call to your souls and give you an oportunity. Focus your mind and calm your heart. Your sould will know best of its own potential. Find what my spell will bring to the surface and bring it into the light of day.
If you feel you are not ready then I have a few trinket that may be of use to you and help you in the future.

With a wave of her hand 4 items float out of various efffigies in the room.
A scale armor curias decorated wiht images of spiders
A dagger that glows faintly bue white and eminates cold
A staff of wood and bronze worked to appear as a dragon with the head atop leaking whisps of flame
A small pendant carved in the shape of a fox head. About this dances a small fox spirit.

Baruman tried to calm his mind as the spirit instructed, but it still buzzed with the events of the last days and he could not focus. He felt he had not awoken his potential, as the spirit had said, but he had only left his home town a few days before, and knew so little of the wider world that he didn't really know what that potential was. Besides, could you trust this magic? a thing in your hand was surely worth more than an idea? His eye kept being drawn to the pendant with a fox frolicking and playing around it, now that was a thing of beauty, and a friendly looking spirit.

"Ma'am, If I may?" Baruman moved forward to take the pendant

Chanting and gestuing the sprit bgins her ritual. All of the portals begin retracting and after several minute the spirit hands you the crystal orb before setting asside several items and stepping into a circle she has created. Taking the tattered cloak she places it on her shoulders and reaises the hood.
Imediately the cloack conceals the sprits figure and sinks to the floor shaking as groans and unintelligable cries come from the figure under the cloak. The shaking and cried turn to moans and then shrieks as the minutes pass Then all is still. Slowly the figure rises up and pushes back the hood exposing a set of antles that now grow from her head.

Realizing you are of no use to her she croutches low, and muttering words presses her hands to the rot spreading at her feet. The blackness surges and waves of necrotic energies pulse along th floor. The black and green energies struggle against each other and a grey haze filles the circle.
You realize the haze to be spores form the fungus growing at the witches feet. The haze allows you to now clearly see th confines of the binding circle. However to your dismay, though not unexpected, you see small black spots poke through the barrier. These gaps are quickly sealed by the living enregies of the cirlce but Elph sniffs the air and says Stand back, the mist is poison

He had canoed through a mysterious graveyard. He had been attacked by undead skeletons. He had watched as a spirit had spoken to them, a witch had tried to kill them, and an explosion had filled the room. Now, a fox had just apparated from his neck and was rubbing it's nose against his ankles.

After recovering for a moment from your recent ordeal you all head back down stairs then continue to the basement crypts. You find the room were the Ogre Wight fought Eddisham and Shmautz with 3 doors leading deeper underground. You cautiously explore each but encounter no more animated dead. Just the still kind. Each hallway lead to another chamber that likewise had 3 additional doorways leading even deeper into the crypts. On the floor of each is an elaborate ritual circle. Eddisham feels magical and deathly emanations and Shautz sees dark energies pulsing into and out of the circles as if they are living hearts.

After a short discussion you decide to try and disable the circles without removing all traces at this point so that you can show them to the priest who should be nearby with the others having last been seen fighting the undead. Between the two of them they find key points of the ritual that should disrupt their functions
and make note of the symbols before Eddisham uses magical liquid light to wash away the key glyphs and symbols.

As they are doing this Baruman pokes around the crypts but a cautioning word form Elph, who kept an eye on the inquisitive youth, about the all to real spirit they met perhaps not appreaciate her relatives bodies form being looted. Baruman does not give up and scours the pathways you travel and comes up with several small baubles, only about a third of which seem to have markings or emblems denoting them personal items. Collecting the unmarked goods he comes up with a small but not unimpressive pile of gleaming metal and gems.

Completing the disabling of the 3 ritual sites you head back up to the 2nd floor and stepping out onto the balcony look out to see the cemetery empty but there is a large contingent on the shore that looks to be treating their wounded. The boatman that brought Elph and Baruman here has joined them. Looking around you see none of the undead that were being fought when they arrived.

We are keeping an eye of them as well as allowing the other researches to question them. many reatin memoried of the Dawn War and several have been quite helpful

"So, we can leave the castle behind, you say? Fine. Nevertheless I'd like to restock - maybe a the base? Then we can follow Embers call, right?"
OOC:
We (the currently active party) travel back to the base. Fine, I'm curious what's next. :)

"Indeed, let's head back to base and drink enough wine to forget about what we've seen. Until we have to see it again"

Turning to Lord Felspar "I'm afraid the we destroyed the ritual circles, but I am sure a man of your wisdom will be able to gain some information from what is left"

As he leapt into the boat to leave, it swayed suddenly, and the boatman had to quickly pull his oar to steady it. A splash of water came from the paddle and landed on Ember's back. The young spirit looked up into Baruman's eyes, and then suddenly disappeared.

A wave of panic came over him at the loss of his new friend, and he felt the amulet grow cold around his neck. Reaching his hand to clasp it, he could somehow still feel some form of energy coming from it though. It's OK, I can feel that you are still there.

Felspar grumbles about "over eager and unafraid fools leading to the destruction of the world" before taking a boat out to investigate what you found the party is allowed to return with the wounded to the base and sent to get a meal before reporting your finding to the clerk or Phlan.
