Rijo follows Ur. "What's the deal with a cockatrice, anyway? Got any weird things about them?"
Dec 21, 2022 3:13 am
Asking the question reminds Rijo that alchemists value the eyes of the cockatrice for whatever weirdness alchemists use those for. Worth their weight in gold, they are. Probably a couple of gold pieces per eye?

The stairs go up about twelve feet at a relatively shallow incline, between twenty and thirty feet of run for that rise. Ur's torch casts its steady reddish glow on the dusty grey marble steps, which are dusty but highly polished under that dust, veined with silver and gold.

The cockatrice crows again, the echoes ripple ...

You become aware that the ceiling of this room is high beyond the light from the lantern or torch, the horizontal extent of the chamber exceeds the radius of your lights as well.

What are Rezin, Webster, and Stor-bten doing as Ur and Rijo chase the cockatrice?
Dec 21, 2022 3:45 am
Webster watches as Ur and Rijo chase after the cockatrice, readying his crossbow.

He says:

"Seems a bit misguided to be running around and causing this much noise in the dark, doesn’t it?"

to no one in particular. He glances around, nervous to fall outside of the lantern’s glow.
OOC:
I forget, does anyone else have a light going? Rezin?
Dec 21, 2022 9:12 am
OOC:
I have a lantern
"The echos make this place sound big lets go the other way and see if there's another staircase."

Rezin starts walking away from the stairs keeping an eye on the railing to see if there is another staircase attached.

"Someone should probably stay here in case it jumps down."
Dec 21, 2022 1:43 pm
Webster slinks closer to Rezin.

"I can spot it with my crossbow if we don't get too far away."
Dec 21, 2022 2:53 pm
"We best be careful in here too. This is a high-deep room and falling might hurt us as much as calcifying do."
Dec 23, 2022 12:57 pm
Ur and Rijo reach the balcony. The torch flares and its flame sways in the slight breeze that washes along the structure.

The cockatrice crows a third time and launches itself through the balustrade with rapid pulses of its wings. It looks like a scaly white rooster with a big red crest, glowing yellow eyes, and a golden beak.

It flies laboriously but fairly swiftly into the darkness across the big room.

Ur hears a noise, like someone angrily clearing their throat. Looking to his left, he sees the translucent form of a dwarf wearing fancy robes and running straight at him.
OOC:
Small combats proceed in segments, in which characters make attack rolls of 2d6 + attack bonus (AB). In each segment, GM characters declare their actions and then make their attack rolls (regardless what the action might be). Player characters make their attack rolls (regardless of what they might do) and then declare their actions. Declared actions are resolved in descending order of attack rolls. This overall gives tactical advantage to the players.

Rolls

denizens? - (3d6)

(644) = 14

ghostly dwarf's attack roll - (2d6+1)

(54) + 1 = 10

Dec 23, 2022 6:26 pm
Ur yells out a startled half-scream half-battlecry as he instinctively strikes at the translucent form's side with his dagger.
OOC:
So I edited the post to add my declared action after having rolled... Let me know if that's wrong.

Seeing the bird launch off the balcony, I change direction and chase toward it. Catching a glimpse of it's hind end I throw my dagger, watching it miss and skitter across the floor. I stay on course and retrieve my dagger. Now, to find those beady eyes again... I sheath my dagger and pull out my Sling and a stone.
The best thing about slings is, I can always find another rock.

@seanfsmith Stor-bten stands dumb faced, watching the cockatrice flap into darkness.

@satanicpanic Ur feels searing cold and a great sense of anger as the ghost passes through him. The anger abruptly fades when the ghost leaves his body, but the cold remains. He shivers deeply.
OOC:
I marked the sheet to deduct 2 health.
@Qralloq, Rijo strikes at the ghost as it emerges from Ur's body, but his axe seems to pass right through the semi-solid form.

@BaboonsandMoons,@Eyes Webster and Rezin act ineffectually.

The ghostly dwarf responds to Rijo's axe stroke with an abrupt lunge toward the headsman.

The cockatrice crows in the distance of the vast chamber, its call echoing from left and right walls.

You all hear a scraping of stone against stone from somewhere in the darkness across the room, possibly at the height of the balcony.

Rolls

ghostly dwarf attacks Rijo - (2d6+1)

(14) + 1 = 6

Using my tracking skills, I chase down the cockatrice with Webster at my side. When I spot those beady eyes, I start whipping the sling over my head, I aim 6 inches below them and swiftly let the rock fly.

Seeing sparks fly when the stone strikes the ground, I believe I've missed. "Damn, that bird. Kill it Web."

Having felt that deep deep cold, Ur turns and shoves his torch into the spectre's back as if it were a dagger.

"Motion! Act! Foolish boy!" Stor-bten chides himself, then rummages in his bag for his mirror before remembering that he sewed it to his lapel. He lifts the mirror and holds it towards the spectral dwarf, trying to distract and unsettle the spirit.
OOC:
I assume something like WIL would apply here? As such is said roll:

@eyes,@BaboonsandMoons As Rezin moves after the sound of the cockatrice's crow, the bubble of lantern light moves with him. It becomes obvious that this room is very large - in a few moments the light no longer touches the balcony or the row of pillars beneath it, and barely reaches the foot of the stairs. At the top of the stairs, Ur's torch illumines the struggle with the ghostly dwarf.

The floor of the room is flat, cut and polished from the rock of the mountain itself. There is no debris to stumble on. The cockatrice has stopped its crowing, but you believe it may be perched at the height of the balcony, some distance across the room. For a moment, a blink of its glowing eyes confirms that guess. It is more than a bowshot distant by Rezin's estimate - well out of reach from the sling.

@satanicpanic, @qralloq Up on the balcony near the head of the broad shallow stairs, Ur futilely bashes his torch against - and through - the specter. Meanwhile, the ghost brushes against Rijo, who feels a brief chill as he cavorts aside from the malign entity's onrush. The ghost stumbles over the edge of the balcony, through the railing, and drifts toward the floor of the room.

@seanfsmith Stor-bten must choose whether to follow Rezin's lantern or ascend the steps to reach the light of Ur's torch. Alternatively, he can deal with the ghost in darkness.
