Echoes in the Darkness [IC]

Dec 12, 2022 7:38 pm
You stand, poised to move forward, on a wide ledge before the Gates of Ghostal. The massive iron doors of the Gates, each twenty feet tall and ten feet across, stand ajar. Each of you easily could slip between the gap of the doors. But ... something gives you pause.

Before you enter, as a flurry of snow swirls around you, you gather your courage and reflect upon your purpose.

Why have you come to retrieve the talisman called Eightstrong? What else do you hope to find within the Halls called Ghostal?
Dec 13, 2022 1:36 pm
Rijo shakes the falling snow off his broad shoulders and grips his axe in his leather gloves. Ice cakes his beard and he peers uncertainly at the doors. It seems wrong that they're open. If the treasures of Ghostal remain intact, wouldn't they be hard to get to? Or is that they're well guarded, very well guarded.

He squares himself. The long, brutal trek is over. Now it's time to get to work. No other power he's heard of will allow a man such as himself to face the Iron Witch of Mistsleeper Bog. His family is likely dead, but his efforts to retrieve his stolen children have failed, his strength unequal to penetrating that fel bog. The Eightstrong might do it, and if its strange powers won't help him, some other terrible dwarven weapon might be found.
Dec 13, 2022 5:28 pm
Webster had always been one to chase rumours. Of far-off battles, treasures, secrets, or great beasts that still stalked the earth. He never looked to attain, to challenge, only to witness, preferring to record his many journeys in a journal that he hoped would one day wind up in a library somewhere. On his way to find a fountain in the hills that (allegedly) granted wishes to wayfarers, he was made privy to the tales of the Eightstrong. Something about this treasure struck him in his heart. It was not one to witness, it was one to possess.

Standing now at the Gates of Ghostal, he feels the drumming deep within his chest, the draw of legend. Pulling his cloak up and holding it below his chin, he stares into the darkness between the iron doors. Inside, myth. Outside, only a chapter book of wanderings.
Dec 14, 2022 5:47 am
Ur looks to his left at Rijo and slaps him on the back, knocking some of the snow off his beard and nudging him forward an inch.

"You goin first... Rijo?"

His hearty laugh gives way to a deep cough that almost brings him to his knees. Not a strange thing for a chimney sweep to suffer from coughing fits, but he knows he can't let on how much pain he's in, or they'd start to doubt whether they can count on him. And doubt's just as likely to kill us all as anything else out here he thinks. His eyes flick back to the gap of darkness between the massive doors. Or in there..

He looks over to his right at Webster and Stor-bten.

"Come on fellas... are ya scared?"

Nothing he could do about the wheezing inhalations that forced him to break his speech into brief phrases. If we can just find this talisman and sell it, I'll never have to go back to breathing soot again...

"Well... we came all this way.... so I guess we... may as well..."
Dec 14, 2022 3:08 pm
"Let's wait for the others to catch their breath," Rijo mumbles, a little too quiet to make out. He pulls out his shield from his backpack and straps it on his arm, then leans the huge headsmans axe against the closed door. He hefts the battle axe from his belt. "If I'm going in first, I'll do it right."
Dec 14, 2022 4:23 pm
You all hear it. A distant bellowing, high up on the mountain. The sound of a frostwyrm, readying itself for ... something. People usually avoid the creatures, they are big fast and vicious.
Dec 14, 2022 4:29 pm
"We would do well to avoid the scaléd thing," Stor-bten says. He has been staring at the door to Ghostal, hoping to high Thedbren that some of his fathers' trinkets remain within. Eightstrong is just the excuse for the mission.
Dec 14, 2022 9:02 pm
Rezin, slightly hunched over and looking at the doorway as though it were a loaf of bread, appears confused. His fingers appear to be permanently stained from working with ink and quill. His hair, somewhat long, is the color of chocolate and he's wearing a multicolored bandana. It appears unkempt but seems to fit his chiseled face. Actually, he seems like he's trying to figure out if the door is really a door.

Well. I don't care who goes first but we'd better get on with it before that noisy cat gets down here and takes our tuna. Hey!! Did you know, tuna is called chicken of the sea? I've never understood that.

Rijo leads in through the gap of the door.

Who bears a light for his steps?
Dec 14, 2022 9:32 pm
Webster looks around at the assembled group, waiting for someone to hold a light aloft. Inside his cloak, he places a hand on the horn dangling from his belt, a trophy from his travels. He mutters to himself, "Here's hoping I never have to sound this for aid."
Dec 14, 2022 11:38 pm
Ur fastens a torch to the end of his chimney broom (ten foot pole) and lights it with his flint.

He walks behind Rijo, holding the pole over his shield and over Rijo's shoulder, out in front of them, so that the torchlight crosses the threshold first.
Dec 14, 2022 11:54 pm
Watching a bird fly out of sight, Rezin realizes everyone is going in and just walks on in as though he hasn't a care in the world.
Dec 15, 2022 2:19 am
Hesitation gives to urgency. Pell mell, you all crowd in through the gap between the heavy doors: Rijo preceded by Ur's torch, then Ur, then Webster, Rezin, and last of all Stor-bten.

You find yourselves at the short side of a chamber that has a trapezoidal floor plan. The torchlight just reaches dark openings at the two ends of the long wall that you face. The ceiling is about twelve feet high. The long wall, about twenty feet long, is entirely covered with a high relief stone carving of dwarfs chaining a dragon to a pair of pillars. The carving is intricately detailed and also labeled, cartoon / assembly drawing style, with dialog and names. This is a traditional format for narrative dwarf art. All the labels are in dwarf runes - Stor-bten, at least, could read them if he cared to.
OOC:
Do you go left, right, or study the drawings?

Stands gawking at the carvings.

Carvings like this can be hundreds upon hundreds of years old, what an illustrious representation of the great wyrm.
Dec 15, 2022 4:58 am
"So what does... it say? Stor-bten... any idea?"

Ur moves the torch around to light up each part of the carving.

Rijo moves back and grabs his big axe. He was half expecting to be picked off by arrows or rocks when they entered. He'll then move toward the left, but will wait for the others to examine the drawings.

Webster stares at the carvings, and admires the architecture. Noticing Rijo moving off to the left, he looks back to the group.

He whispers, "I'll keep an eye on the right side," and draws his crossbow.
Dec 15, 2022 2:07 pm
Moving to the left, Rijo sees that the torchlight diffuses around the edges of the opening. It seems like there is a big space with a diagonal wall going to the left and a straight wall going ahead on the right side, so that the space gets wider further from where Rijo stands. One or more pillars stand about ten feet away from the left wall. The space has a ceiling about twelve feet high that is supported by stone beams going from the left hand wall to the tops of the pillar(s); to the right of that ceiling Rijo cannot see how high is the roof of the space. He notices that the right hand wall seems lower further ahead, but there is no visible ceiling above it.

Moving to the right, Webster sees a big space with a diagonal wall going to the right and a straight wall going ahead on the left side, so that the space is wider further from where he stands. The straight wall gets lower further from where Webster stands. There is no ceiling near the straight wall. There are pillars near the right wall, and they support stone beams that hold up a ceiling about twelve feet high.

To the left and to the right, the space is open beyond the range of torchlight.
Dec 16, 2022 9:42 pm
Stor-bten eventually lets out a sigh.

"It's a famous story and we would tell it each festival, each ceremony. Each funeral.

"See here, it shows the sacrifice of a great wyrm. We did that to bind a talisman meant to enhance the quality of our steel. It worked, but it worked once.

"We tell the tale often. It reminds us to be careful, that great acts can bring great falls and great waste.

"I believe you smoothmen have a similar saying? Do not bite off more than you can choose?"

OOC:
What do you do? Which way do you go?
A sudden gust of air sweeps through the chamber. The torch flares, its flame snaps away in the gust and it is reduced to a fading red glow. Its absence leaves the shadow of light in your eyes.

You hear something skitter across the floor, further into the emptiness that you haven't yet explored.

You know, fear and a phobia are not the same thing. Being scared of the dark is normal. Being unable to function in the dark is not.

Gets latern from backpack and lights it.
Dec 17, 2022 5:02 pm
Lighting a lantern in the dark is a bit more difficult than you might imagine when you're doing it with some kind of light already to help you see what you're doing. Nevertheless, Rezin accomplishes the minor feat and a warm yellow glow suffuses the antechamber with the elaborate wall. The lantern's thick glass walls should protect its oil wick from any more sudden gusts of wind.

Which way do you go?
Dec 17, 2022 7:14 pm
Finally, thought that would've been easier. What do you say we find ourselves a snack.

Standing, I make my way towards the skittering sounds, fully expecting to catch a squirrel or bird that's stuck in the dark, looking for a way out.
Dec 17, 2022 11:50 pm
Rijo slings his battleaxe back on his belt, and ties his shield to his backpack. Gripping the headsman's axe, he nods at Rezin, and goes wide to the man's right. "I'll go this way, try and flank it."
Dec 18, 2022 6:44 am
Ur sees Rezin and Rijo move out and figures they must know what made that sound, to be so confidently moving towards it.

He follows Rezin, not intending to be left behind. He slides the broom into the gap between his back and his backpack, and grabs the coiled sling from his belt along with one of the smooth stone projectiles. He uncoils the sling, slips his finger into the finger loop, places the projectile in its harness, and starts it spinning.

"Psst! What is it?"
Dec 18, 2022 1:54 pm
I think it's some kind of animal trapped down here in the dark. At least I hope it is, and not some sort of bug. C'mon.

Listening intently I move slightly to the left of where I think the sound came from so we can chase it towards Rijo.
Dec 18, 2022 3:41 pm
Rezin holds the lantern and follows the left wall, between the wall and the pillars. Rijo follows the straight wall from the left opening out into the vast dark of the chamber. The lantern light casts shadows from the pillars into the darkness. Rijo finds that the straight wall actually is the side of a staircase that leads upward back to above the antechamber with the carvings on the wall.

Stor-bten, Webster, and Ur uncertainly follow.
OOC:
Who follows Rijo? Who follows Rezin?
At the base of the staircase, Rijo has reached the edge of Rezin's lantern light. Either Rezin needs to come off the left wall and out into the black, or else Rijo needs to move toward the light.

From further ahead comes the skittering noise, like claws on stone. You all see a pair of glowing yellow dots appear and vanish, probably a bowshot away from you. Their location might match the noise.
Dec 18, 2022 6:12 pm
Rijo will stay on the edge of the zone of illumination -- it won't do for him to fall in a hole. He grips his headsman's axe tighter, and prepares to face the unknown.
Dec 19, 2022 9:44 pm
Stor-bten moves quietly towards Rezin and the light, his eyes scouring the space where the yellow dots did dot
Dec 19, 2022 11:32 pm
Ur also continues behind Rezin. He stops spinning his sling to avoid making noise, instead keeping it hung by his side and ready to fire.

He peers out over his shield, barely seeing Rijo at the edge of the lamplight.

Whispering to those around him, "Can you tell which way it went?"
OOC:
Ur wants to ascertain whether it seems like Rezin's plan to chase it towards Rijo seems to be working.
Dec 20, 2022 12:02 am
Abruptly you hear a vigorous flapping of wings - not quite like those of a bird, they sound a bit leathery - from the same direction where the yellow dots glowed. The noise rapidly ascends and crosses above your heads, somehow sounding clumsy as it passes over you. A moment later there is a thump and scratch from above and behind you, like something about the size of a chicken just landed on stone.
Dec 20, 2022 1:59 am
Turning around, I hold the lantern up high and walk slowly towards the "chicken" trying not to scare it into running.
Dec 20, 2022 2:27 am
Raising the lantern high at arms length sheds its glow on the railing of a balcony or mezzanine that overlooks you, about twelve feet up. The railing appears to be a line of slender stone pillars that continue in one direction to the head of that staircase that has the elaborate stone carving on its backside. In the other direction, the pillars along the balcony continue out of sight into darkness.

The lantern does not light the ceiling of this vast room.

A yellow dot blinks at you from between two of the pillars up there.

I'm pretty sure their edible too, so be careful and we'll have ourselves a good supper. Now, Ur, do you think you can hit it from here?"

Rijo groans. "Not a cockatrice," he mumbles, but no one hears him, even if they did listen. He gets ready to sprint for the eyes, and lay waste with his axe. He envisions a chicken with it head cut off, and through visualizing prepares his body for the action to follow.
Dec 20, 2022 12:33 pm
OOC:
It's up on the balcony, 12 feet above you. To get there you would have to run up the stairs in the dark and then run along the balcony in the dark. Unless someone gets a lantern up there.

OOC:
Assuming it seems this same staircase at which Rijo is located seems like it'll take us to to the balcony/mezzanine...
Ur gets out his torch again and quickly lights it from the lantern. He runs across the space to Rijo.

"Let's go up and see if we can spook it back down!"

Ur heads up the stairs (assuming Rijo comes along) with the torch in one hand and his dagger in the other, his shield stowed on his back again.
Dec 20, 2022 9:17 pm
While Ur shifts his gear around, the animal up on the balcony utters a rooster-crow that confirms it most likely is a cockatrice. The sound of its call echoes distantly from the walls of the chamber.

Dec 21, 2022 3:13 am
Asking the question reminds Rijo that alchemists value the eyes of the cockatrice for whatever weirdness alchemists use those for. Worth their weight in gold, they are. Probably a couple of gold pieces per eye?
Dec 21, 2022 3:17 am
The stairs go up about twelve feet at a relatively shallow incline, between twenty and thirty feet of run for that rise. Ur's torch casts its steady reddish glow on the dusty grey marble steps, which are dusty but highly polished under that dust, veined with silver and gold.

The cockatrice crows again, the echoes ripple ...

You become aware that the ceiling of this room is high beyond the light from the lantern or torch, the horizontal extent of the chamber exceeds the radius of your lights as well.

What are Rezin, Webster, and Stor-bten doing as Ur and Rijo chase the cockatrice?
Dec 21, 2022 3:45 am
Webster watches as Ur and Rijo chase after the cockatrice, readying his crossbow.

He says:

"Seems a bit misguided to be running around and causing this much noise in the dark, doesn’t it?"

to no one in particular. He glances around, nervous to fall outside of the lantern’s glow.

"Someone should probably stay here in case it jumps down."
Dec 21, 2022 1:43 pm
Webster slinks closer to Rezin.

"I can spot it with my crossbow if we don't get too far away."
Dec 21, 2022 2:53 pm
"We best be careful in here too. This is a high-deep room and falling might hurt us as much as calcifying do."
Dec 23, 2022 12:57 pm
Ur and Rijo reach the balcony. The torch flares and its flame sways in the slight breeze that washes along the structure.

The cockatrice crows a third time and launches itself through the balustrade with rapid pulses of its wings. It looks like a scaly white rooster with a big red crest, glowing yellow eyes, and a golden beak.

It flies laboriously but fairly swiftly into the darkness across the big room.

Ur hears a noise, like someone angrily clearing their throat. Looking to his left, he sees the translucent form of a dwarf wearing fancy robes and running straight at him.

Small combats proceed in segments, in which characters make attack rolls of 2d6 + attack bonus (AB). In each segment, GM characters declare their actions and then make their attack rolls (regardless what the action might be). @eyes,@BaboonsandMoons As Rezin moves after the sound of the cockatrice's crow, the bubble of lantern light moves with him. It becomes obvious that this room is very large - in a few moments the light no longer touches the balcony or the row of pillars beneath it, and barely reaches the foot of the stairs. At the top of the stairs, Ur's torch illumines the struggle with the ghostly dwarf.

The floor of the room is flat, cut and polished from the rock of the mountain itself. There is no debris to stumble on. The cockatrice has stopped its crowing, but you believe it may be perched at the height of the balcony, some distance across the room. For a moment, a blink of its glowing eyes confirms that guess. It is more than a bowshot distant by Rezin's estimate - well out of reach from the sling.

@satanicpanic, @qralloq Up on the balcony near the head of the broad shallow stairs, Ur futilely bashes his torch against - and through - the specter. Meanwhile, the ghost brushes against Rijo, who feels a brief chill as he cavorts aside from the malign entity's onrush. The ghost stumbles over the edge of the balcony, through the railing, and drifts toward the floor of the room.

@seanfsmith Stor-bten must choose whether to follow Rezin's lantern or ascend the steps to reach the light of Ur's torch. Alternatively, he can deal with the ghost in darkness.

Rijo has a time getting Webster back on his feet. It's only as he lets go of his tottering companion that he realizes: the man has been turned to stone!

The statue of Webster glowers into the darkness, clearly upset about its condition.

Ur looks down from the balcony above, squinting around the flame of the torch.

Stor-bten's kukri cleaves the ghost in half. It vanishes with a pop.

Rezin dashes to the left and stops just in time to not run into the edge of a raised platform that is about shoulder high. There are steps up to the platform, just visible at the edge of the lantern's light. It is a big wide space that goes beyond the light. Rezin thinks that he can see people sitting on chairs up there in the dimness.

"Holy Specterous spectators , Guys! where you at?" Looking across the cavern to the other light, I'll dash back to my companions

Rijo mumbles a bit, then yells, "Webster has been turned to stone. Into a stone statue! Beware!"

Leaving the man, he abandons the plan to grab the tongs, and looks around for where the others, and the ghost, and the cockatrice are.

Arriving back at the group... "Hey, I hit the chicken. But! Then i was trying to find a way up and i think some people were watching me. Let's go check it out and maybe, if i killed it, cook some chicken."
Jan 8, 2023 7:33 am
Ur runs down the stairs to join the group. He approachea the statue of Webster and raises the torch to the stoney face.

"We c-c-can't... leave him... like this!"

Unless you know some magic or cure, there's really nothing we can do. It's sad, I know, but we came here knowing we could die. I didn't expect this to be how it would go. Let's say a prayer for his soul and move on quickly. If I am next, I hope that you guys will do the same for me.
Jan 8, 2023 6:41 pm
"At least he had... no family. Told me as much... on the hike up."

Ur awkwardly shakes Webster's stone hand, admiring the firm grip.

"Goodbye, Webster."

Turning to the others...

"So, are we going to see more of these spectres? Why could only Stor-bten hurt it? Is it because he's one of them? A Dwarf I mean, not a spirit."
OOC:
I had established that because of his lung damage from being a chimney sweep, Ur speaks slowly and with pauses. I'm not going to keep putting the pauses in the text, though, because it's getting annoying!

Leading the group back to the stairs as we talk. "I'm not sure, I wasn't there to see what happend. I've never fought a ghost."
Jan 8, 2023 7:51 pm
"Maybe he'll revert when we kill the magic chicken,"Rijo mutters, but no one listens to him. Whether that's because he mumbles, or he mumbles because no one listens to the headsman. It's really a cockatrice and the egg kind of situation.
Jan 8, 2023 8:32 pm
What's that Rijo? You gotta speak up a little, man. Practice opening your mouth when you speak, forming each sound clearly. try saying something like, The brown cow pounds the grounds. Eventually you'll sound more confident. Gotta fake it till you make it, or, as the priest used to say, Speak loudly just not about me.

Here's what you've learned about this big, big, dark room.

It has a ceiling you can't see.

It has a balcony around the edge of the room about 12 feet up. The balcony has a railing of narrow stone pillars.

There are stairs up to the balcony. You're standing at the foot of the stairs.

It's laid out with a pointy end, where you entered behind the stairs, and then it gets wider.

About two bowshots away from the pointy end there is a platform that is about shoulder high, and Rezin thinks there are people sitting verry still in the dark up on that platform. Also at that end of the room on the balcony, is a cockatrice, which might be dead. Or really angry. Or frightened.
Jan 11, 2023 5:51 am
"Stor-bten, how'd you injure that thing? If we see more of them, I want to know how to defend myself!"
Jan 12, 2023 12:49 am
Rijo smiles grimly at Rezin, certain he's been made fun of, and not that happy about it. He says nothing.

Ur, however, knows exactly what to say, and he listens eagerly for the reply.

Stor-bten looks to each of the others in turn, then down at his weapon.

"Truth be told, I am not knowing exactly that. It felt like killing, though. Perhaps we all can harm it if we focus on its destruction?"
Jan 20, 2023 12:56 am
The moment passes. The cockatrice makes a clucking noise, far away at the other end of the balcony.

What do you do?
Jan 20, 2023 3:48 am
I take the group to where I saw the watchers. See there, looks like people.
Jan 20, 2023 12:58 pm
The light of lantern and torch falls dimly on the seated figures. There are six of them. Do they move, or respond in any way to the new light that you bring?

No. They remain where they sit, silently and motionless, on chairs like thrones, facing out into the vast dark room.

What do you do?
Jan 21, 2023 1:02 am
"Careful, could be mischief," Rijo mumbles, and readies his headsman axe, securing his battleaxe to his belt.

He moves forward toward them, ready for this to be a trap of some sort.
Jan 21, 2023 1:06 am
Rijo finds the steps up to the shoulder high platform, and ascends them. He walks toward the seated figures.

They don't move. They don't speak. Still as stone.

Six dwarfs clad in noble regalia, each holding a finely crafted axe across his or her lap.
Jan 21, 2023 1:52 am
Following Rijo up the steps, "Are they alive, statues, or long dead?"
Jan 21, 2023 2:03 am
Rezin's voice rings out and echoes, louder than intended in the still dark space. The lamp light casts its glow upon the silent figures, which respond to the question with motion.

Their movement sounds like cracking stone and sliding stones as the six figures swiftly stand. The axes from their laps now in their hands.

Then they ... lock into place, in stasis, solid and still. Poised, as if they have forgotten their next move.
Jan 21, 2023 3:16 am
Whoa, statues aren't supposed to move!

Quietly, even for him, he says to Rezin, "Might be dwarfen mischief. Mechanical wheels and things, on a timer. Maybe they just move once an hour, or once a day."

He looks carefully at the table, wondering more if they are guarding something, like a hidden panel or so forth.
Jan 21, 2023 7:22 pm
Stor-bten moves towards the statues, looking to see if there's any obvious operating mechanism.
Jan 21, 2023 9:33 pm
All this movement and speech seems to energize the stone dwarfs, who abruptly lurch into eager and belligerent motion.
OOC:
At this juncture we're entering combat, and it's important that we know who is where - kind of. I have Stor-bten, Rijo, Rezin, up on the platform. I don't know where Ur went. @SatanicPanic has been offline ten days.

In the OOC thread I'm going to discuss the combat rules that we're going to use.

I'm going to run past the statues to get on the other side.

The stone dwarf's axe thumps hard against Rijo's armor, the headsman feels the impact deeply. His own axe crashes against the moving stone, striking sparks and splinters of rock. There is a terrible cracking noise, as if something internal to his assailant has shattered.

Stor-bten passes between the two moving statues that try to chop him apart. Their axes collide with a terrible clashing sound. He is well clear of them, into the edge of the darkness.

The other two axe-wielders batter at each other, chipping stone and steel a staccato.

Stor-bten springs towards the statue that Rijo's splintered, trying to use his momentum and his understanding of centres of gravity to try and tip the contraption

OOC:
I think we're doing 'auto succeed but roll to avoid harm' thing.
Stor-bten hits the back of the surprisingly massive stone dwarf, it's about his own size but substantially weightier. Nevertheless, his impact is strong and the thing topples forward onto its face. It shatters noisily. Apparently it was hollow. A big puff of dust and little stone splinters rises and settles quickly.

The nearest stone dwarf turns and swings its axe right at Stor-bten!

Sadly, although Rezin's blow causes the dwarf's stone skull to crack with a ringing sound, the golem warrior is not sufficiently stunned to prevent it smashing its axe into Rezin's body. The loveably spacey counterfeiter gasps and collapses to the smooth and cold stone floor of the dais.

Rijo ducks under a clumsy swing of an axe, gets in close, and grapples. The stone dwarf wobbles and topples over. SMASH. It shatters in a cloud of dust and a scatter of shards of stone.

One of the two that were fighting each other beheads its opponent, who also shatters and collapses in a shower of stone fragments. The victor turns toward Rijo. He and Stor-bten are the last delvers standing, two breathing invaders opposed by three inimical moving statues.
