Salvation Outpost

Jan 26, 2023 7:34 am
Two years ago, the once great Kingdom of Cyre was destroyed in a magical cataclysm, transforming the nation into a warped, desolate wasteland. Its cities now lay in ruin. Some twisted, misshapen and blended into the landscape. Others crushed to the ground of wiped from the earth. Over a million Cyrans died on what is now called the Day of Mourning. The only survivors, the aberrant, mutated creatures that now roam the barren landscape, the nation’s Warforged and a small number of Cyran refugees that were able to outrun the grey mists that caused the destruction.

No one knows for sure what caused the mists, or why they stopped at Cyre’s borders. The Day of Mourning shocked the nations of Khorvaire into the end the Last War. Fear of the mists expanding or happening to another of the nations led to the Treaty of Thronehold. A tenuous peace now exists.

Cyre’s riches, relics and technology remain buried in the Mournland for those brave or crazy enough to enter its shrouded boundaries. Salvation Outpost formed as a hub for the various salvage operations that venture into the mist seeking fortune, glory, knowledge, a chance to reclaim lost history, or perhaps all of these.

What brought you here?

You step off the lightning rail onto the platform of Salvation. A copy of the Salvation Times newspaper in your hand tells you of accommodations at the Salvation Hotel and opportunities for work posted on the Salvage Board in a tavern called The Grey Beyond. A map in the paper guides your way.

Core comes off the railway and always takes his space. He will make his way to The Grey Beyond. His pockets are lean, and work is always best. Scavenging is nothing new to him. He doesn't rush but there is directness in his stride. He isn't a clean-cut man and there are lots of rough edges. He has been exceptionally quiet on the rails and wasn't one that any wanted to talk to. Shifters are bad enough and this one looks mutilated.

Appearance: Wearing ragged traveler clothes with a broad leather weapon belt with two handaxes and longsword. Has a waterskin over the shoulder and belt pouch hanging. His backpack has a rope, shield and quiver of 4 javelins attached.

A tall gnome with unusually blond hair steps down from the train. Clad in travel clothes with scale armor and a mace at his hip and the symbol of Aureon on his shield on his back and hanging from his neck easily identify his a a follower of the god of lore and magic. Looking around the platform he sighs at all the giants about cutting off his view. As a youth he would have clambered up something to look about but the dignity of his station with the church of Aureon forces him to glance at the paper. Though not his home town this is the closes outpost to his former homeland. The few connections he has made suggested that if there were any survivors of his family this would be the place to start. With no correspondences in over 2 years Gzizmix hold little expectation of finding kin but hope required he try. Though only here in a limited capacity with the order, to observe the state of things and send regular reports, his commander is aware of his destination and informed him that should he encounter higher ranking members of the church investigating the Day of Mourning he should assist them and they may have advice for him regarding finding and contacting any surviving family.
After orienting himself Gzizmix heads off into town towards the Salvation Times. They may have the best idea where to begin to look for his family. Afterwards he will head to the hotel to secure lodging before going down to the Grey Beyond to listen to the latest rumors.

Leaving the lighting rail Kleber takes a big breath, inhaling the scent of civilization, noticing how the only difference between it and the swamp is that the usual stench of piss and mud is now accompanied by acrid smog.

The journey from the Shadow Marches was quicker than expected, but being cooped up on the bewildering floating transport for hours with others passengers gawking at the mark on his face soured the half-orc's mood, which left him hungry.

Scaning the news paper he got Kleber's eyes are draw toward the The Grey Beyond tavern advertisement, what's better way to integrate in a new workplace than trying the local grub?

Mordaky's big frame exited the train, his long red tail swooshing side to side with a big of swagger, but also assuring he didn't trip anyone up with it. His mood was a bit sour, having lost a big finale bet on the train ride here after having been on a tear for most of trip, but while most people would have cried over the amount he lost, it was all in a days work for a gambler like himself. He'd be back up tomorrow, he knew it.

For now it was time to find his way to accommodations, and seek out a way to heavy his purse with coin through good old fashioned hard work. As he made his way forward his eyes flicked from side to side, and internally he could feel his muscles ready to go at a moments notice if he needed his blade. He wondered if he'd ever feel completely safe again, but this was his life for now.

"Excuse me can you..." a person gawked and then hurried along as they saw his crown of horns, deep red skin, and devilish appearance, even at his protesting. "...point me in the direction of The Gray Beyond. Well, guess we'll just have to flip a coin until we find our way" a phrase he'd used for years comforted him as he set off down the street looking for the Inn, and somewhere to get a drink.

37 stepped off the rail with a lot less noise than one might have expected. He was not a massive Warforged by any means, but the armor certainly added bulk. His step was surprisingly light, all things considered.

It had been a while since he had been in Salvation, but the layout was familiar. Weaving through the crowd of people -- there certainly seemed to be more than the last time he visited the outpost, which was undoubtably great for business -- he made his way to The Gray Beyond, by way of the salvage market. After all, it was important to maintain business relationships.

Vice stood on the station platform and looked at the paper he swiped. (He made a note to trt and make this the last thing he stole, but its previous owner appeared to be done with it anyway.) So 'Salvation', that's where he ended up. A fitting name for a new start he guessed.

Vice was a gnome with messy brown hair, a neatly trimmed beard and mustache, and was spinning a chakram around one of his wrist while holding the newspaper in the other hand. He preferred to be juggling or fidgeting with at least three of them. For now, he had the other 6 chakram in the set in his backpack, no need to stand out. Although he was wearing a purple circus costume.

He stopped reading when he noticed a little kid watching him. He smiled, he was an entertainer at heart, after all. He flung the chakram in the air, then bent at the waist to catch it behind his back. He then tossed the paper toward the kid, and ducked around a corner while the fluttering newsprint obscured the view.

He allowed himself a little laugh when he was out of earshot. Then said to no one "Looks like I'm headed to the 'Grey Beyond' then"

The Grey Beyond. Salvation’s watering hole for its scoundrels, scavengers, brokers and workers. Rough and dirty like the town itself, raucous laughter, pipe smoke and the smell of stale ale fill the air of this crowded space.

As this unique group enters, no one really takes notice and it’s quickly obvious why. As you look around, the people in this tavern are as diverse as you. Scavengers like yourself who spend their hard and dangerously earned wages on overpriced drinks and cheap food. The patrons share exaggerated stories and tell rumours of their hunt in the Mournland. Bragging on the treasures they claim to have found.

A blonde-haired, halfling barmaid, scarred and battle worn, watches keenly over all of it. Her eyes scan the room between customers. Her ears twitch as people talk. This is her domain.

The tavern’s common room is built around the salvage board. The heartbeat of the salvage industry. This is where the brokers of Salvation post bills for jobs within the Grey. The jobs it provides, your siren’s song, your livelihood.

Core says as he reads the posting. 'Yeah, like any of us have sixty gold coins for a big starter. Hell, that would take several scavengers to work together to even consider it. But to be sure there wouldn't be a competition problem. Any of you interested in this. Well, I will be at that table."

He points to table and tells a server he wants a pitcher of their hardest and some stew with bread. Core is settling in.

The stranger's words catch Kleber's attention, he follows the shifter's gaze toward the job board and raises an eyebrow at the costs.
The owner of the tavern is the contractor, they won't risk their reputation with shitty jobs, it's expensive but probably worth it.
Preferring to fill his belly before work, Kleber decides to join the man's table to talk, he seems open to forming a team. On the way he also orders a tankard of beer and any meal with meat they have.

As Kleber sits at the table with Core, they both notice a small Gnome is also there. "You gents putting together a team? Must be trying to tackle one of the bigger jobs then eh?. I can help! I can get into small spaces, I'm good with people, not that you guys aren't, I can juggle, which may not be terribly helpful here, and if I fight breaks out, I will also be there.

A tall orc in a white apron brings the pitcher of ale and the stew for Core, the tankard and leg of mutton for Kleber and sets them at the table.

"Five silver for the stew and ale. Three silver for the beer and meat.", he says lazily. You pay him and he walks away without a word.

The food and drink are simple but tasty, you’ve had better.

37 looks over at the growing group discussing jobs. "I agree that the owner of this estabishment wouldn't likely risk their reputation on a bad lead," the Warforged says as he joins the group. "I know it's a risky proposition for people who are just meeting like this, but could we possibly pool our resources? I'm willing if others are."

Walking in after a fruitless visit to the times Gzizmix looks around. Spotting Vice, another gnome is always a welcome sight, he head over and takes any available nearby spot. Ordering a meal and drink he will simply eat and listen for now.

Looking to the warforged and the Gnome that recently arrived Vice says; "Yes of course, 'the more the merrier!' and 'Many hands make light work' etc etc."
Jan 30, 2023 10:05 pm
"Yeah, that's true, but I literally meant resources. As in, I have 9 gold of the 60 gold asking price," 37 clarifies.
Jan 30, 2023 10:12 pm
Kleber takes a quick swing of his cheap beer before addressing the growing group.
"And here I was thinking finding a party would take a few days, not minutes" he smiles showing his rather small tusks "You all wanna jump straight into the big job or first get used to each other working in smaller posts?"

I have few coin. It seems prudent to familiarize ourselves with the region before taking on a high risk task that may require knowledge we yet lack.
Jan 31, 2023 3:38 pm
Vice admits; "I am also currently, temporarily, short on gold myself. So perhaps a smaller job to start would be prudent."
