It's a sunny late spring afternoon when you roll up on the library building. There's a local sheriff car parked nearby, the lights cycling blue-and-red. A deputy is sitting in the car with the windows open. He's watching two people who are sitting on the steps of the library.

The two people sitting on the library steps have an odd skin tone, kind of inhumanly pink like a bad shade of lipstick. Their heads are shaved or possibly bald. They wear white thigh-length robes over white trousers. They are barefoot. They seem to be enjoying the sunlight. They're sitting there silently looking at each other.

What do you do?
Jan 29, 2023 5:51 pm
Janus grabs the 9-45LCR forms and a clipboard and heads over to the local sheriff.

"Just need your signature here, and initial here and here."

He hopes the clipboard-effect will bamboozle the local authorities into keeping their noses out of things. Nothing worse than having to deal with the police as well as an incursion.

From there he heaves out the mapper drones and walks past the "visitors" thinking Lili or Chuck will do a better job interviewing them. He sets the mapper drones down at the opening of the library, flips on the pre-calibration sequence, tucks the link tablet under his shoulder, and sets them free. As the drones head in he begins a perimeter check outside the library on foot.

He hopes in the next fifteen or twenty minutes he'll have a good idea of how big of an incursion this is and that the drones don't cause too much disruption.

Lili double-checks her gear harness and bag; C4, grenades, shoddy-ass shotty, and enough space to grab something worth an extra buck. She takes a moment to look at the sky above the library; it always felt wrong that these things happened even on peaceful, sunny days. Hated that she didn't have a change of clothes, either; tie and blazer it is. She took the bandages off her head, at least.

While Janus does his thing, she turns to Joe and Chuck. "Looks like Janus has the drones and pigs covered. One of you wanna help me chat up these..." She pauses. "Uh, sunburned-looking dudes?"

Assuming at least one of them will, she tentatively approaches the ... visitors. "So, uh, library get a dress code all of the sudden?" She says to one of them.
Jan 30, 2023 1:22 am
The man looks up at her. He squints a little in the sunlight.

"Are you ok?" he asks. Lili realizes two things: (a) he's freaked out by her burn scar; (b) he doesn't speak English. But she understands him.

Both of these are not new things to experience around an incursion. (a) is not new, generally. (b) is specific to incursions. Confirmation, there, of what's happening.
Jan 30, 2023 1:23 am
Chuck follows Lili's lead and checks his gear. Lili interrupts his check asking to talk to the sunburned dudes. He says, "Yeah, let's see if we can get anything out of them" and walks with her to the steps. Chuck smiles at Lili's dress code crack. He leans closer to her and whispers, "Well, at least these guys don't smell like those weird things we found outside the water treatment plant last month."

Chuck then addresses the refugees, "Where are you from and what are you running from?"

Janus circles the block. Historic houses (a plaque on one of them reads "1645" with an illegible name in smaller font), a lot that's so overgrown he can't tell whether it's vacant, and at the back of the library is a parking lot.

Another cop is here. She is taking photographs of the back doors of the library, which have been decorated with so much CAUTION and POLICE tape. She looks around at Janus. "This is a scene," she says, "it's a closed scene. Did you notice the car over there?" Janus had walked right past it. Glancing back he sees a standard issue sheriff's patrol car with its lights going. No obvious sign that he's in a crime scene. No other cops, either.

"We're from Novydom," says the man who spoke to Lili. His companion nods. "This is?" he turns and looks up at the front of the building. "Kent Library. Huhh. Letters are weird. ... Hey, what ... do you speak Seree?"
Jan 30, 2023 2:25 am
Janus puffs out his cheeks and lets out a long sigh of frustration.
This will complicate things.
A lot.

"Right." He nods and backs away a step or two. Not an apologetic nod. Not backing away with any shame or guilt, though.

He then flicks open a walkie-talkie. "Joe, looks like the police have a closed scene here in the back. Maybe you can come…sniff around a bit anyhow."

He then smiles at the officer and waits and watches. He figure someone got themselves dead at the back exit. Funny, Miss Flowers didn’t mention it. In that moment of waiting, Janus absently taps on the edge of the tablet. Why do those mapper drones always seem to take forever?

He hits refresh one more time.

"Are you ok?" he asks.
"Lost a fight with a hairdryer," she says. Another surprised person, another made-up joke about how it happened. You really did have to make your own fun.

"Novydom, ah-huh..." She says. "Never been. Don't speak that language, but we understand each other, so that works for me. Heard you had some trouble with ... gods, was it? We're problem-solvers, so help us help you." Then, to Chuck only: "Never can get the fun-and-safe candyland incursion, can we?"
Jan 30, 2023 9:09 am
Joe quietly joins Lili and Chuck to check on the refugees. He lets the girl take over, though he can't but wonder if whoever these people are will understand the jokes. Well, he doesn't really, though those weird things outside the water treatment plant... the thought of that smell still makes him sick...

He takes a good look at the refugees. He doesn't know much about religions but the sight of the pink people reminds him of eastern monks from the movies: shaved, robes and barefoot. He wonders if there is a relationship. Probably not. He's not good at these things.

While he is lost in his thoughts, mostly fantasizing about the "monks'" martial prowess and flying kicks, he gets the message from Janus. He picks up the walkie-talkie and grunts back as a vague and general acknowledgment as he starts to sneak around the building and sniffing, making sure to go the opposite way Janus took, hoping he can get inside whatever the police closed as Janus distracts them.

Prowess for sneaking. Strong hit.
Joe circles the block counterclockwise as Janus went clockwise. He passes around the front, side, and back of a large white Methodist church on a fine green lawn with towering elm trees. The trees and the building have been there quite a while. On a whim, he cuts across the parking lot behind the church and heads straight to a gap in a wooden fence along the side of the lot. There's a certain smell from that direction ...

Stepping through the gap he steps into a line of pine trees that are planted right against the fence, and almost trips on a bleeding pink body that is dressed in very torn-up white garments. The body is torn up about as bad as the robe. The eyes are open. It's not immediately apparent whether the body is breathing, but first guess is "no."

Glancing up from the body, through the pine branches, Joe sees a parking lot with a couple of older cars, a book return bin, a sheriff patrol car with cycling lights, and the back of the library - he's sure about that because there's a sign that says Kent Library. He also sees Janus, who appears to be talking to someone out of his view in an alcove where the back doors probably are.

Joe probably can't be seen where he is.

This part always kind of freaks Chuck out. It's like watching a foreign movie with voice over actors. The man's lips are moving but what Chuck hears doesn't line up with the motions of his mouth.

"No, we speak English here, but we won't have trouble understanding each other. You'll get used to it. Did you come out of this building or from somewhere else?"

"FEMA Agent 211-2." Janus says matching the disinterested. Playing it cool. "Just a bit of recon before we go in. Looks like you've got your work cut out for you."

He nods his head at the taped door, daring her to talk about an active investigation. The civilian-incursion paperwork is gnarly, Janus has seen the protocols FEMA dumps on the local police. "If this is your first rodeo, make sure to get those photo worksheets double-signed by evidence control. Before and after download. FEMA pencil pushers are twitchy about chain-of-evidence."
Jan 30, 2023 9:21 pm
Seeing Janus talk to someone, Joe holds off reporting back for a moment. He tries once or twice to figure out what is going on before turning his attention back to the pink body. He checks for vital signs where he expects them to be found (you never know with these aliens) and, lacking any obvious evidence of life, kicks the corpse, just to be sure.

But it is the smell of the blood that attracts him the most. He tries to figure out if the refugee left a trail as he escaped from whatever wounded them or any other clue to where and how they were mortally wounded

"Yeah," says the pink man. Lili notices he's burlier than the other one, and has a thick scar across the back of his right forearm. Like he got cut by something. The other one sits quietly watching the conversation, with an expression like he's ready to interject if there's something important comes up. "So, yeah. Novydom is like a center, a trade port? In the river canyon. Yeah, the whole city is up on stilts in the river. And there's ... rules. About what we can say and do. There are things we just. Don't. Talk about." IT's at this point that Janus gets back to the front of the library.
Jan 31, 2023 11:32 pm
Lili spots Janus, and walks over to him, leaving Chuck to speak with the refugees; he'd probably have better luck getting the last bit of info out anyway without her scarred-up face distracting them. "Naturally," she says to their now first-in-command. "Chuck's getting some more info out of them, but what we got so far is that they're from someplace called Novydom. They're scared to talk about it... kinda like how someone in a cult talks when they know something's fucked up but don't want to get in trouble or get smited- smitten? Smote? Whatever. They said there's a lot of rules about what to do and say," She says.

She double-checks her explosives are secured, and slings her shoddy-looking excuse for a shotgun over her shoulder. "Sounds like the whole place is on stilts over some river. Probably big, too; they said it's a trade center of some kind. They went into their library's reading room and came out here. And they want to stay, so whatever's on the other side probably isn't a benevolent force. Especially given the scar on the big guy's arm."

She stretches and rolls her neck. "So, you know, the usual."

You've all had That Briefing, it's repeated often. The briefing about the way that incursions grow worse, and dangerous things emerge, the longer they're left open. You don't remember the reason for why FEMA knows this, but the Briefing focuses on the tight timeline to find and destroy the crystalline structure that anchors the incursion - the weirdstone. Every incursion has one, usually (not always) in a straight line from the entrance.

Janus has the Plumb around his neck. It presently presses an outward bulge in the front of his shirt, right toward the doors of Kent Library. It will move around when you're in the shit. Always pulls directly toward the weirdstone. If (when) the Plumb starts to glow, you need to have wrapped things up (destroyed the weirdstone) and be headed out.

Janus jots down notes as Lili reports in.
He then reaches into his right coat pocket and offers her the main-coms walkie-talkie. The one that also records all the time, the one that tries to do the GPS thing (but never works in the incursion), the one that the second-in-command operates, the one Randeep gave Janus so long ago.

"Don't make me give this to Joe, heaven knows he might just start chewing on it."

Janus hopes Lili will take it. He knows why she's here, serving her time, as it were. But she's an excellent Breaker and she should know that. She's earned this.

He gives it an impatient shake daring her to take it.

Joe had given up on the corpse and was already ready to move on to find out what killed it when it moans. "What in the moonless skies!" He looks back at the corpse and wraps an arm around it to help it sit. "You ok man?"

Looking around, Joe doesn't see Janus anymore and decides it may be a good idea to take the "corpse" back so someone can check it.

Lili looks at the radio, then back to Janus, then to the radio once more. With a groan and a shake of her head, she snatches the radio from his hand. "Man, you know how I feel about havin' more responsibility," she says. She begrudgingly hooks the radio to her gear harness. "I'm still getting out as soon as my time's up, you know." She's said it before and she'll say it many more times, but each time she says it, there's a little less conviction in her tone.

"Don't die because I'm not being number one, alright?" She says, with a little grin as she punches his arm. "Let's get the lads and head in; I got a brick of C4 burning a hole in my pocket." With that, she'll follow his lead.
Feb 1, 2023 3:36 pm
Chuck turns his attention away from the newcomer when Janus approaches and announces it is time to move out. Seeing Lili take the radio from Janus draws a mixed reaction out of Chuck. He's glad to see Lili take the radio, even though it appears she's not too pleased. He knows she'll be great as #2. He's also sad to see the transaction, solidifying the fact that Randeep is gone.

He snaps himself out of his temporary daze and says, "I'm gittin' nothin' here guys. All I know is that they walked into a reading room in their library and ended up here. We might as well head in and get this over with."
Feb 1, 2023 5:02 pm
Joe appears suddenly, in that way that he does. He's alarmingly quiet.

More alarming is the pink body he's cradling in both arms across his chest. It's wearing white clothes like the two men on the steps, but its clothing is torn up and so is its torso. There are smears of blood on the clothing and on Joe from carrying the body.

The body moans, apparently it's alive. The two pink people on the steps look frightened. The burly man gets up quickly and then stands awkwardly: he doesn't know what to do. The taller, slender man stands up more slowly "I'm a nurse," he says in that weird not-lip-synced "Seree" speech. "Let me see her."
Feb 1, 2023 7:31 pm
Janus looks at the "visitors" for bearly a moment.
If they are still there once the team gets out maybe he can afford to worry about them. But he can feel time ticking away. He's pleased Lili gave in, but he tries his hardest to mask his emotions. She can't see him react one way or another -- it is just matter-of-fact, how it's going to be, professional-like.

"Right, gather up. We're going to change up the procedure a touch. When we first enter the incursion, we are going to do a quick recon and scavenge. If you can find any more of those feather-weight rocks, or some of those red-orange plants that we got last time, grab'em, as we made bank on those last time. I figure 45 min or so, then we'll make a plan and proceed toward the weirdstone.

"Who wants point
?"

Janus grabs onto the front Kent Library door and then looks to Joe and Chuck, and then back to Joe. Waiting for an answer before he pulls the handle. He hopes nobody will object-- though it is definitely not what Randeep would do. Randeep was all about the missions, blowing the weirdstone first, then worrying about loot second. Not Janus, he wants at least some insurance that they get something. By asking about point and changing the subject, he figures the team will be distracted enough to just go along with the change in plan.

OOC:
Getting info out of them probably needs a roll…

"If you mean burying it by blowing it to smithereens, yeah sure-- but all in due time. Best to get the lay of the land first, and if we happen to get some salvage all the better, right?"

If whatever waits has fangs as sharp as the one that did it to "corpse", then there will definitely be blood to smell on the other side...

Ugly short-pile carpet that probably came at a discount because no-one else wanted it. Yellowish wooden shelves, plenty of brightly-colored books. No people in here.

Wait.

She takes a breath and flicks off the safety of her raggedy shotgun. She hated when things went to shit before she could even get a lay of the area. She pops around the corner to throw a quick shot at one of the other pink people that hadn't fired yet. "Three of 'em!"

I'm going to talk about positioning and risk.

It would be helpful to have players, when your character takes an action that needs a roll, specify what risks your character fears. This generally will frame the fiction and help things move along.

Sometimes I may throw in the unexpected ...

On a hard fail (6-), a bad thing will happen. Sometimes more than one.

On a soft hit (7-9), the desired good will happen ... modified by some bad. I'll ask the player to pick from a list (very often, the list that you provided when your character acted).

All that being said, we had no framing for Lili's hard fail, here.

Before Janus can even step through the door Lili's shotgun thunders and his ears start ringing. His eyes are still adjusting to the dim.
Damn those mapper drones, couldn't they have at least given a heads-up, on whatever this is? Through the haze of gunsmoke it looks like three of these visitors with crossbows. Then he sees one of his crew injured, and then he sees red. Just rage.

One thing being big and tough affords is also having a big booming voice.
Using the door as a partial shield, he levels his shotgun in their direction. Then Janus commands the intruders.
"Drop it!"

He's more worried that they'll hurt the team, than himself. Those crossbows are nasty pieces of work, but nothing compared to modern weaponry. Otherwise, he's worried he might actually have to shoot someone. For all his bluster and force, actually hurting others...or hearing anything really.... makes him feel horrible.
OOC:
Janus is totally ready to blast these intruders if they don't drop their crossbows and dis-engage, immediately. Just FYI.

@CESN Sweet roll (I didn't see that before I posted). Might make Janus' roll redundant, but I'm totally cool with it. I sort of like the werewolf asking for peace, while the hippy mountain man is going all intimidation.

Joe's fast. He ducks under the crossbow bolt that zips over his head and snaps in half when it hits the brick wall next to the doors.
OOC:
@eels_ I'm going to roll for Lili's avoiding the crossbow bolt headed her way
Lili ducks behind the bookshelf. The crossbow bolt knocks a book into her shoulder, but she doesn't even get a paper cut.

The three crossbow wielders cautiously lower their weapons. "What are you doing?" asks the woman who shot Chuck.

OOC:
Hopefully this is ok? Chuck is thinking these guys don't want this connection either.

Each of the pink people looks at each of you - except for Lili, who still is hiding behind the bookshelves. They keep their crossbows declined.

"We would like that," says the woman who seems to be the leader of their team. "We have heard of this happening before. The Elders sent us in to secure the library after people disappeared. However, this is not our library. ... Have you seen any of our people?"
Feb 3, 2023 6:35 pm
Joe discreetly elbows Chuck as he sniffs the air. He then whispers to his, well, work colleague "I don’t like these pinkies"
OOC:
could the wound from the "corpse" be from a crossbow bolt by any chance?

Janus marches forward and takes their crossbows, quick like, with full authority. Not giving them a chance to argue.
"These are only going to cause you trouble here. You’re lucky to be alive right now."

Janus points to Chuck and gives the hand signal to move forward and continue with the recon. But he has an expression on his face as if to say, "you ok pushing forward right?"

"Your people are just out that door. Don’t worry-- we are trained in this. Get your people and we’ll get this sorted out."

Then Janus looks around, basically ignoring them.
This high-status type of move is always tricky-- he’s a bit worried they’ll be some sort of honor culture or stubborn and want to resist. Heck, they might try a sucker punch. So he keeps his shotgun level but in no case would he put his team in the line of fire.
OOC:
What level of tech do these folks have in general? What is the state of the library--what does Janus see (if anything) that indicates there is an incursion? What looks like the best way to the incursion opening?

** Update, not sure how I forgot to actually roll the dice! ***
I think this is an important roll to get things off on the right foot, so Janus will spend some STRAIN to boost it.
(The rules are vague if it is before or after the result hits.)

OOC:
You said it best. And where it's tricky, and you're aware of things that would worry your character, there should be a roll.
Janus glances quickly at the crossbows. They look ... not modern? Not ancient? Vaguely steampunk or gearpunk or some kind of early industrial aesthetic / tech level. Victorian? Well made and with a flavor of "mass produced." Lot of cast metal and some kind of very light-weight, very hard wood.

The library looks undisturbed. The "outside" at the back door looks wrong, though. More like another layer of "inside." Less well-lit than the main part of the library, there are bookshelves where Janus thinks there ought to be a parking lot and a little brick-paved area and where is the annoying sheriff's deputy and her patrol car? Yep, that's the incursion.
Feb 4, 2023 5:26 pm
Hearing the conversation, Lili slowly steps around the bookshelf, shotgun cautiously half-raised. She watches the conversation play out, still as much on edge as Janus. She signals to him that she'll go with Chuck; now disarmed, Janus and Joe should have no trouble handling themselves if their new friends decided to get feisty.

She goes to Chuck and pats him on his good shoulder. She lowers her voice and says "Come on, man. Clock's ticking. I've got your back."

Shoulder still stinging, Chuck hesitantly moves toward the incursion. He's thinking to himself that it would be nice if one of these pinkies would help get them through their world so he won't get shot by another crossbow. "Yeah, ok" he says to Lili. "Just keep your eyes open for pinkies with crossbows. They really suck.". Then he remembers the Plumb. "Hey Janus, which way is the Plumb saying we need to go?"

He approaches the entrance to the other world and starts glancing around to see if there are any threats in the area.

Rolls

Looking for threats!? - (2d6+1)

Feb 6, 2023 8:34 am
Before the pinkies go on their way into our world to get their friends, Joe sniffs the air twice and then runs to catch up with them and Janus. "You guys didn't smell any big dog around here did you?"
OOC:
casually asking where the boss is :D
Feb 7, 2023 10:27 pm
"What is 'dog?'" asks one of the male pinkies. His forehead wrinkles as he tries to recognize the word. You notice when he says it, his lips match what you hear.

The back door of Kent Library appears to open into another library that is lit by oil lamps on stands. It appears just as deserted as is the library in our world, a room of shelves and tables and stools. Daylight can be seen through high narrow windows in the far wall. There also is a doorway in the far wall. The twin doors are wooden, dark, each with twelve rectangular panels arranged 3 x 4. The handles are dull-finish metal, like nickel or white brass.
Feb 8, 2023 9:37 am
"Four legs, tail, fur, teeth" Joe sort of gestures around pointing at his imaginary tail and making "vampire" fangs with his fingers to explain what a dog is... before just giving up. "Ah hell, I'll just smell it!" He turns to Janus, scratches his foot on the floor and points at Chuck and Lili "We probably should bury that rock soon before more pinkies get out"
OOC:
off he goes to join the others unless something happens
Feb 8, 2023 5:25 pm
Chuck sighs, and says to the others "Ok, let's go find this damn rock and blow it to smithereens." Keeping his gun at the ready, but not in a threatening position, he starts heading toward the other door, glancing around as he goes looking for more pinkies or worse. Oh, and the rock. That damned rock that put him in this position in the first place. Thinking to himself, "Maybe it's time to start thinking about going back to being a paramedic? Yeah, that job sucked too, but at least I wasn't getting shot by pink freaks with crossbows."

Over his shoulder he says in a lower voice, "Sharp eyes... we don't have much time."
OOC:
Let me know if I'm rolling wrong or unnecessarily. I figure Insight would be used for looking around?

Janus lets Chuck and Joe take the lead. Despite himself he finds himself distracted by the beauty of the "other" library. The metals, the leather. It just looks cozy in a way.
"Change of plans. This does not look like a good place to scavenge. I don't mind grabbing artifacts from the strange incursions, but this stuff looks like it belongs to ... people."

He moves forward behind the lead. He turns to Lili. "I'm not saying you can't scavenge, I'm just saying... I'm not a thief."
He then consults the plumb and follows its pull.
OOC:
Does the plumb also indicate distance? (i.e., the tug is stronger the closer we are?)
Feb 10, 2023 6:39 pm
The plumb pulls gently forward and slightly upward, trying to wiggle up out the collar of Janus shirt.

You can see daylight in a crack between the double doors at the far side of the room. It's about fifty feet away - only a couple dozen steps among the waist-high shelves and tables.
Feb 11, 2023 6:06 pm
Janus marches through the door and walks into the incursion. The shimmering chill that sometimes happens when crossing over makes his stomach go cold.

"The plumb is pointing up. Let's look for stairs.
"Chuck, what do you see? Anything to worry about?
"Lili, what do you think our best retreat path is going to be?
"Joe, did you want one of these crossbows?"

Janus offers up one of the weapons to his teammate.
OOC:
Janus is looking around. Where is the best way to go up? Is there a way to block, lock or barricade those other doors-- or does it feel like we need to go through those doors to go up? I'm imagining that is the way outside but our target is something inside this incursion library. The last thing Janus wants to do is to announce their presence to whatever population is outside that library.

Joe smells pinkies who used to be in this room. They got frightened and left. He doesn't know where they went.

Something moves among the shelving to the right. It's about the size of a dog. It's out of sight now.
Feb 13, 2023 2:27 pm
Chuck is looking around as Janus and Joe are discussing the crossbow. Addressing Janus he says, "I got nothing boss." He keeps looking around for some stairs or something to climb in the direction the plumb is sending them.
OOC:
I'm going to assume Joe is the only one who picked up on the dog thing moving among the shelves due to his roll?
Feb 13, 2023 4:06 pm
There are no visible stairs. There's a door in the wall to the left, through the stacks. It might lead to a stairway, or a bathroom.

There are the doors to outside.

One of those doors swings open and a pinkie with a crossbow steps in, sees you, and darts back out. The door starts to swing closed where they were.
Feb 14, 2023 9:18 am
Joe tilts his head at the moving door as the pinkie hides away and then suddenly stops. He sniffs the air as he tries to pinpoint a sound from within the library. Then he turns to his right, staring at the shelving, motionless. After a moment he gestures to the others and readies his rifle... waiting for his prey to come out of hiding...
Feb 17, 2023 3:54 am
Janus notices Joe freeze and instinctively freezes as well-- his eyes dart about trying to see what Joe has noticed, both glad to have Joe along for his uncanny senses, and a bit creeped out that Joe isn't entirely human anymore.
OOC:
If something doesn't happen within a minute or so, Janus will cautiously head toward the doors with the goal of getting rope ready to tie them shut. Did the doors swing in or out? I'm imagining like big double metal doors, with long handles running horizontally. Does that sound right? But he won't plan on tying them shut if the side door does not lead to stairs.

Did the pinkie come in/out the outside doors or the one that may lead to stairs or a bathroom? I was going to have Chuck check out the single door, but I wasn't sure where the pinkie was seen. Also, don't want to get mauled by whatever Joe is checking out! LOL

Starting to panic because this pink dog will not relent, Chuck slams it into the nearest bookshelf, trying to knock it off his arm.

Good choice.
The thing emits a shrill noise as its spine crushes against the bookshelf. It spasms and falls to the floor, twitching.

There is a moment to look around ...

One bloody mess of pink lizard dog thing. They bleed red. One other pink lizard dog that has stopped twitching and stopped breathing. Chuck must have hit its cervical spine just right.

A shelf of books with illegible writing on their spines. Spoken language seems to translate fine across the worlds, but writing not so much. Weird?

Everything stays still.

The Plumb continues to pull on Janus' neck, toward the doors where the pink fellow glanced in and withdrew.

OOC:
I think Chuck should try patching everyone up? I know Joe got beat up pretty badly. Is that an insight roll? I don't know if he gets any kind of bonus for having first aid supplies? Actually, how does that work? Is it a one use thing?
Feb 28, 2023 9:08 pm
OOC:
The default rule is that you can "spend" a first aid kit to recover 1d6 hp when you rest. This is a rest. You have a first aid kit.

Let's make it more interesting. You can *just* spend the first aid kit and recover 1d6 hp. **Or**, you can spend the first aid kit and test Insight. 6- the kit is wasted, 7-9 you roll 1d6 to recover hp, 10+ you roll 2d6 to recover hp.
Mar 1, 2023 6:03 pm
Looking at his arm, then glancing at Joe's face, Chuck decides to help Joe. While his arm is in bad shape, Joe looks much worse off. His time as a paramedic trained him to be able to quickly triage the wounded on a scene. "Ok, Joe. Let's take a minute and I'll see if I can patch you up a bit."

Chuck takes out the first aid kit and gets out the necessary things to hopefully stop the bleeding and get Joe patched up.
OOC:
Ok, option 2: Going to spend the first aid kit and test insight to see if it works. Am I understanding you correctly that the first aid kit is only lost if I roll 6-? If I succeed, then the kit is still good for another use?

While they work with the first aid kit, Janus takes a closer look at these beasts, thinking if the team encounters them again, the more we know about them the better.
OOC:
Any particular weaknesses of this animal? Are they big mastiff-like dogs, or more flighty coyote things?
Mar 3, 2023 4:20 pm
The critters are about fifty to sixty pounds in size, their limbs are shaped more like those of a lizard than a dog, which explains how they could cling so viciously to people. Their faces are formed around short and brutal jaws, like those of a bull dog rather than a coyote.
Mar 3, 2023 5:11 pm
After patching up Joe, Chuck puts the empty first aid kit back into his pack. He'll load it up before the next chaotic mission.

"Well, I hope we don't need more fixing up. Joe's injuries were bad enough I had to use our remaining first aid supplies. Let's see where that pinkie who poked his head in went too. Maybe that will get us to the stone." Chuck heads to the door and cracks the door open to see if pinkie is waiting to ambush them.
Mar 3, 2023 8:50 pm
There's a whole crowd of pink people in baggy white robes and trousers! About a dozen or more, standing in the bright sunlight on a stone floor under an open, very blue sky. Two orange stone buildings of blocky shape frame the crowd and a third orange stone building looms behind them. There is a distinct smell of water.

One of the pink people gestures toward the door but it's not apparent whether that is responsive to Chuck cracking it open or just part of an ongoing conversation.
Mar 3, 2023 10:06 pm
Joe carefully follows Chuck to the door. Seeing the crowd of pinkies he waves back at the one gesturing... hopefully in a friendly way. He discreetly turns his head back to the others "Anyone sees the rock?"
Mar 4, 2023 1:05 pm
OOC:
It seems the pinkies want the same thing as our characters. Maybe we can get them to help us find the stone and blow it up?
Mar 4, 2023 7:47 pm
Janus limps to the door and begins to plot out a direction based on the stone.

Janus says to Chuck as he passes, "I've got one more kit in my bag, if anything should... should ... if you need it. "
OOC:
What is the emotional vibe from the crowd? Curiosity? Angry mob? Scared masses?
What direction does it tell Janus to go?
Mar 5, 2023 6:24 pm
The stone pulls up and to the right, kind of toward a corner of the big squarish orange building to the right of the crowd.

The crowd look at you all emerging from the door. They briefly talk to each other, then one of them steps forward a couple of steps. "Hey," she says uncertainly, "what ... what's going on?"

Two pink people with crossbows approach from the left. They're carrying the crossbows over their shoulders on slings, unloaded. They see you, and the crowd, and hurry their walk to kind of get between you and the crowd. They leave space between you all and the pink woman who spoke to you. They're looking at you inquisitively. They have not readied their crossbows.
Mar 5, 2023 8:15 pm
"We are a FEMA team investigating as well. Until we know more can you please clear out this crowd? What is that building over there?"
Janus steps out then turns to Joe and Chuck and gives them a "well-here-we-go-follow-my-lead" sort of look. Then he walks with as much presumed authority as he can muster despite the aches from the bite. He adjusts the weight of his heavy equipment in his backpack and heads toward the orange building.

He hopes using what can only be considered by them as technical jargon (FEMA) will impress upon them his authority and the importance of the situation. He fears they might see the worry turning to dread on his face, not sure what sort of panic it would rouse. But he wants to get to that orange building ASAP and deal with the crowds after they can blow that rock.
OOC:
I'm wondering if maybe we say Lili would step out and help manage the crowd and such?
I'm not seeing much reason to roll with an advantage-- I think the FEMA gambit is just enough to make the attempt possible but no advantage.

Moving forward from the library doors shifts your perspective. The stone-floored plaza is a ledge, and a windy one, high up. The other three buildings are separated from this ledge by open air, traversed by slender arches of steps. Glancing back you see that the library building has a steep pyramidal roof; the building to the right has a domed roof; the one straight ahead has six turrets, one at each corner; and the building to the left has a very shallow conical roof.

You hear and smell water flowing. The sound of it rises from under your feet.

There is no parapet to this ledge where you stand. It is a square about fifty feet to a side. The crowd are roughly in the middle of the plaza.
Mar 6, 2023 1:29 pm
"Should we get the other pinkies back?" Joe whispers to Chuck as Janus plays the big boss man. "I guess they may want them back... they look like a big pack."
Mar 9, 2023 8:45 pm
OOC:
Do any of the masses say anything when Janus asked, "What is that building over there?"
Mar 10, 2023 11:54 am
OOC:
Ak I missed that sorry
The woman who greeted you glances over her shoulder. "Oh - that's the citadel," she says casually.

One of the two men with crossbows says, "We would like to seal this incursion. What do you know about these things?"
Mar 14, 2023 2:15 pm
"Did she say incursion?" Joe looks surprised at Janus "This smells right"
Mar 14, 2023 3:12 pm
Chuck looks back at Joe, "Yeah, I hope these pinkies are friendlier than the last." He rubs his shoulder which still hurts like hell.

Chucks mood lifts a little when he hears the Pinkies ask about closing the incursion. He nudges Joe, then says "Hell yeah, let's find this thing quickly and close it up. We don't have much time."
Mar 20, 2023 4:57 pm
Quote:
One of the two men with crossbows says, "We would like to seal this incursion. What do you know about these things?"
Janus eyes the man with the crossbow. He wonders how much he can trust these people, as he gets a weird authoritarian vibe. He decides to keep it vague, no need to have a FEMA analyst chewing him a new one for releasing classified info to an incursion intelligence.

"We know they are dangerous if left unchecked. Pardon us, we need to get to that Citadel."

Then Janus leads the group forward over that precarious path where the necklace leads him, giving all indication he is not interested in stalling or having a chat.
