These folks traipsing about the wilderness lookin fer boys seems just like a cart load of sogger coal. Norma shakes her head, and knows she will go.

To the pastor she says, "That's some lot of them, Pastor Caleb, sure is. I best go and make sure they don't fall in the holler. No, no, I got my horse, and ain't a better rider in the county. I'll be just fine."

To the congregation, she repeats, "I'll go, too. I know these parts well nuff, and well that's that."

Somehow, Charles felt better knowing Norma Jean was going with. He'd be sure to get her some extra rabbit meat after this was all over. Assuming they all made it back in one piece that it.

"I wanna come too. Been don' with all mah chores for a while. Maa' will be ok by her self for a bit."

Tobias looks at the new voices joining the choir of volunteers. He frowns.
The heck?! Surely these village folks will know better than allow old women and kids to go looking for them missing boys... he thinks.

He looks at the Elders to see their reaction to Norma Jean's and young jack's offers.

When Mackey Sasser speaks up, Abner looks at him and nods. "Good on ye, Mackey Sasser. Good on ye." He addresses the rest of the crowd. "Let's not go a-jumpin' to conclusions yet. We don't know fer a fact that the Whatleys have the Clanton Boys. That's why we ain't startin' trouble with them. What we be a-needin' is a small group o' townsfolk willin' to pay the Whatleys a visit. To ask 'em questions and be all diplomatic like. Y'all be representin' the town, so y'all needs be on yer right best behavior. At the very least, maybe they'll grant us leave to search their land."

At the reverend's question, Abner replies, "Ain't much I can tell ye. Sorry, reverend. No one rightly knows how many Whatleys there be. Mayhaps fifty. Mayhaps more. They had some contact with the Big Boys fer a bit, back when Ol' Number Eight was still open, but that didn't last long. Either them Big Boys lost interest in the Whatleys, or the family drove 'em off." As an afterthought, Abner says, "Yer help is much appreciated, reverend."

Charles makes his way over to where Norma Jean and the other volunteers are starting to congregate. "If'n we're gonna try to be nice, do we have anything to give as a peace offering for the Whatley's?"
May 18, 2023 9:16 pm
Y'all might be askeert of them Whatleys, but I ain't." The booming voice comes from somewhere in the back of the church.

Almost collectively, the townsfolk turn and look back. Several people at the rear of the nave begin to shuffle and move apart. Among the sea of heads, two large men cut through the gathered crowd like sharks. They shoulder their way forward until they reach the center aisle running between the pews. Here, they are visible to everyone in the nave.

"Big" Elroy Hurst is a mountain of a man. Standing at six feet, five inches (195.5 cm), he towers over most of the townsfolk. In fact, he's likely the tallest person in Waller Hole, second only to his nearby son. Broad-shouldered and large in countenance, the old trapper-woodsman still looks quite vital for a man in his fifties. His unwashed, craggy face is heavily bearded, and his outfit is a combination of denim clothing and animal furs. Even for a place like Holler, Elroy's appearance is notably wild looking, as though he were someone prone to spending too much time on his own in the wilderness. Big Elroy's graying hair is long, falling well passed his shoulders, and replete with a number of braids. The braids are adorned with an assortment of small animal bones and iron rings. Atop his head he sports a Davy Crockett-style fur cap made from squirrels. Around his neck, the man wears an owl skull meant to serve as some sort of protective charm. Protection from what, not many are certain.

"Little" Elroy looks very much like his father, only less ravaged by time and the outdoors. Despite his ironic moniker, Little Elroy stands a couple inches taller than Big Elroy. He shares his father's towering build and "wilderness chic" fashion sense, but his long hair and beard are a shade of chestnut brown rather than gray. Little Elroy is a known gouger, having participated in some of the most brutal gouging matches on this side of the Great Craggy Mountains, and his body bears the legacy of those fights. His rugged looks are marred by what appears to be a bite mark on his left cheek - a scar clearly left by human teeth - as well as a chunk missing from his right ear. The younger Elroy is currently carrying a felling axe, which he rests on his shoulder, as though he'd just been interrupted while splitting some firewood.

"Hows about I gather some of the men folk, and we go show them Whatleys what's what?" says Big Elroy. He glances at Maisey Clanton. "I'll get them boys back fer ye."
OOC:
If you are a native of Waller Hole, you are familiar with the Hursts. Big Elroy and his son are known hotheads and troublemakers. Both have been in trouble with the law numerous times and are not above bullying other townsfolk to get what they want. They're infamous for getting into drunken fights and for not being terribly pious. They are, however, excellent outdoorsmen and major proponents of fighting the Big Boys.

Now Macky knew them boys would be an asset to have along but their fiery tempers would have to be contained. He wasn't rightly sure how to do that but he thought he might temper their over-enthusiastic attitudes some.

"Now Elroy, we known each other since the cradle. You know me to be a straight shooter. I'm tellin' ya now that we can't go busting into the Whatley place all guns a firin'. There could be a hundred of 'em and we'd be outnumbered and killed on the spot. We have to be smart about this."

Macky looks to the others for grunts of assent while hoping he has somehow managed to appeal to whatever sense them boys might have in their heads, if any.

Abner initially doesn't respond to Big Elroy's provocation. He smiles and nods to Tobias Phipps. "I seen ye here in town 'fore. Pleased to have yer aid, kind stranger."

He also smiles approvingly when Charles puts himself forward. "Much obliged, Chuck. Thank ye fer volunteerin'."

When Norma Jean volunteers herself, Abner raises an eyebrow. "Well now, yer help is always welcome, Norma Jean. Ye know that. But are ye sure yer up fer this? Ain't no shame in lettin' some of the young'uns handle this."

At Jack's offer of assistance, Abner looks genuinely surprised for a few seconds. He leans forward and squints his eyes as he peers in the direction of the child's voice. "Jack Spriggins, that ye? While I 'ppreciates yer heart, this ain't no job fer a boy. Best ye stay outta this."

Finally, the elder looks out toward Big Elroy. He glowers at the giant man. "What we don't need, Elroy Hurst, is ye startin' a war with the Whatleys. Like I said, we don't know if they got the Clanton boys or not, so we best not head on up there half-cocked."

Big Elroy moves his mouth several times as he chews a glob of snuff tucked behind his lower lip. He seems as though he's about to spit it out onto the church floor, until he thinks better of it. When Mackey addresses him, Big Elroy looks at the man. "Don’t fool yerselves. O’course the Whatleys got them boys. I ain't aimin' fer a fight but seems to me they started one. 'Sides, any guns they got are prolly ancient relics from 'fore the Civil War. Mayhaps even the Revolution o' '76. Powder weapons and the like. Even if there be a hundred Whatleys, we outnumber 'em as sure as the sun gonna shine t'morrow."

Big Elroy looks to Abner and then the other townsfolk in the church. "Look at y'all. Awful afeared of some dang stories. If'n we can't deal with them Whatleys, how's we expected to deal with somethin' worse? Somethin' like the Big Boys, huh? I say, we don't waste no more time a-talkin', and we cut that family, root and stem, from the mountain."

You note more than a few people in the crowd nod an agreement or voice their disdain for the Whatleys.

Tobias nods in acknowledgement at Abner's expression of gratitude.

He follows with interest Abner's objections to the old woman and to the kid's candidatures, to see their reactions.

When the two Elroys bellow their views, he halts his tongue, preferring for locals, who know these brutes more closely, to reply to them.
I don't like their attitude much... That's two troublemakers right there... Not someone I'd care to be around when things get heated... he thinks.

Norma is not easily cowed. She has said her piece and stares down Abner her eyes narrowing. She is of the kind to respect her elders, even if they're near enough to the same age, and so saves her words for someone less on in years.

"I'll go Abner," she says, with a finality to her tone that says she'll brook no quarrel on the matter.

As for young Jimmy, this too, was a test of character. How does he disagree with an elder, or find a way around the proclamation that he shouldn't go?
May 20, 2023 9:46 pm
"But Elroy," Macky says to the big fella, not particularly afraid of him, "All I got is black powder weapons too. We none of us got modern guns and all I'm sayin' is we shouldn't go in their guns a blazin', or in our case smokin'. We should try and talk some, at least at first. It makes the most sense."

Macky nods his head several times as if to continue convincing the snuff-chewing hulk of a man.
May 21, 2023 2:42 am
"Now Elroy, I've been hearin tall tales bout you n your boy just as long as I've been hearing 'em about the Whatleys. In particular, heard you snuck up on a deer that was alert, wide awake, and looking in your direction. Heard a few different versions but they all end with you havin' venison on the table that night.

If'n you really can be that sneaky, why not let us go do the talkin' and be a proper distraction, while you see if the boys are there?
Charles ask, hoping not to offend the Elroy's or upend anyone else's plan.
May 29, 2023 9:42 am
That's clever, flatterin' them big boys, while still gettin' 'em along for the ride, he thinks, admiring the angle Charles has chosen.

Tobias turns to the two Elroys, to see the effect on them.
