Nestled in the serene foothills of the Icebrave Mountains, lies Onyxsong, a slumbering hill dwarven town. This tranquil settlement finds itself at the pivotal intersection of the Ruby Ring Road, encircling the mighty Icebrave Mountains, and the High Road, which winds its way up the mountain towards the caldera of a dormant volcano that cradles the mountain dwarven city of Stormbrand. Reflecting the architectural style of many hill dwarven towns, Onyxsong boasts a distinctive grotte-and-bailey design. One portion is nestled within the heart of the mountainside, while the other half stands proudly on the surface, safeguarded by a formidable surrounding wall.

Within the finely carved caverns, the opulent nobles of Onyxsong find their luxurious abodes, basking in the splendor of their dwellings. On the surface, however, reside the marginalized dwarves and the outsiders, whose homes and shops bear a striking resemblance to those found in human towns nestled in the lowlands. Surprisingly, nearly a third of the bailey's inhabitants trace their lineage back to humanity, exemplifying the diverse tapestry of Onyxsong's populace.

Onyxsong was once renowned for its silver mine, but the precious resource was depleted a century ago. Mokend, the Goldhammer (King) of Onyxsong swiftly shifted the town's focus towards trade and commerce. Onyxsong became a crucial nexus between the bustling human and dragonborn towns in the lowlands and the mountain dwarves dwelling atop the peaks of the Icebraves. Mokend, an aged and wise ruler, finds himself slowly approaching the end of his life. In adherence to hill dwarven customs, all of the Goldhammer's children are eligible to ascend to the throne, but the heir is only named when the Goldhammer lies on his deathbed. With Mokend nearing his final days, he faces the delicate task of selecting his successor from among his three ambitious offspring.

Within the ranks of the noble class, there exists a prevalent inclination to rally behind Gilin, Mokend's daughter. Renowned as a fierce warrior who fearlessly leads her troops into battle, she has personally triumphed over twenty orcs in single combat. The nobility holds a deep admiration for Gilin, believing that these challenging times necessitate a determined and militant leader like her. However, Gilin's demeanor falls short of expectations, often emanating an aura of arrogance and condescension towards those she considers inferior. As a result, the common people harbor a strong aversion towards her.

Ragdig, the second child of Mokend, entered the world frail and anemic. During his early years, he was entrusted to live among humans, where he dedicated himself to mastering the craft of wizardry. Upon his return, Ragdig has won the affection of the common people due to his altruistic character and sincere endeavors to improve their well-being. However, the nobles harbor concerns regarding his intimate ties with foreigners, silently questioning his suitability for the throne.

Enna, Mokend's third child, is an idle and intoxicated woman who has recklessly wasted her father's fortune while spending her days idling in disreputable taverns. She is neither favored by the nobles nor the commoners. The only people who derive any benefit from her presence are the barkeeps who profit from her excessive drinking. Surprisingly, the Priests of Montor, the god of the deep places, find solace in her company. They believe that Enna was born on a significant day prophesied by one of their esteemed seers in the distant past. According to them, Enna's destiny is to eventually discover the Rubis Stone, a potent magical artifact capable of transforming ordinary rocks into precious rubies. Many dismiss such claims as mere folly, accusing the Priests of placing excessive faith in ancient prophecies and asserting that their trust in Enna is entirely misplaced. However, the priests remain steadfast and unwavering in their conviction.

In the midst of a volatile period characterized by political and familial strife, the Bloodwolf tribe of orcish raiders have launched assaults on numerous forts and villages surrounding Onyxsong. Meanwhile, far to the south, the mighty Copper Horde met its demise at the hands of a formidable alliance of humans and dragonborn. Concerns abound among the residents of Onyxsong regarding potential stragglers from the defeated horde migrating northward to join forces with the Bloodwolf orcs, thereby creating an overpowering adversary that the town is currently ill-equipped to face. Adding to the mounting challenges, migratory flocks of griffons have descended upon the region, persistently attacking trade caravans and pilgrims. It is against this tumultuous backdrop that a group of adventurers arrives in Onyxsong, driven by their insatiable thirst for wealth and renown. Unbeknownst to them, these newcomers unwittingly find themselves thrust into the heart of a town engulfed in familial and political turmoil, their destiny interwoven with the fate of Onyxsong and its impending power transition.

A Town Divided
In the midst of political strife and impending danger, a group of adventurers must navigate a town divided by rival heirs and threatened by orcish raiders, ornery griffons, and the potential arrival of a defeated horde of goblinoids, as they become intertwined in the fate of town of Onyxsong and its quest for a new ruler.

Characters
Embark on an epic adventure where players take the reins, starting at first level, shaping the story through their characters' actions and encounters, with a focus on the core rules from the Player's Handbook, providing a nostalgic "back to basics" experience.

When planning your character, keep in mind that this adventure emphasizes combat, roleplaying and politicking.

Post Frequency & Commitment
Players in this game should try to post daily. As is typical, I expect a slowing of the pace during major holidays. If you will be absent for a period of time, please tell the group, so we can continue on until you return (don't leave us hanging!).

Who can Apply & How
Anyone can apply! This is a friendly, back to basics type campaign, so new-to-5E players are welcome as well! I am less interested in the mechanics side of your characters and more interested in the type of character you would like to play. Tell me a little about your character's personality and outlook on life. Answer the following:

- Your character was on a ship but it was destroyed in a storm. You managed to make a small raft big enough for yourself and something else. Would your character pull up a crewman whom they do not know, their beloved pet or a sack of 10,000 gold?
- Your character was hired to be the sole guard for a caravan. A griffon suddenly attacks. It scoops up an old lady and flies off. Does your character chase after the griffon or does your character stay with the caravan to protect the other merchants (and their wares)?
- Your character is invited to a fancy party and is given 200 gold to purchase an outfit. What kind of outfit do you buy?
- Your character is leading an expedition into an abandoned mine, hunting down some orcish raiders. After bursting through a door, you are ambushed by 30 enemies! Your character was the first one in the room. Do you encourage your allies to sally forth to attack the orcs or do you close the door and attempt to hold the orcs off, so your companions can flee/regroup?

I am interested, is this the Oldsong from Pillars of Eternity?
Jun 22, 2023 1:13 am
No, it was just a name I came up with for a homebrew setting. I did not realize a famous setting used the name 😅
Jun 22, 2023 1:20 am
I updated the name so as to not cause confusion! :)

I'm interested! I will say that I haven't done a play by post game before, but if you'll have me I'd love to learn.

I am a 15 year PbP veteran but brand new to these boards. I would be happy to be your first PbP DM :)

I seen the name was different towards the end of me reading and thought it was just different names of different parts lol. Normally I make the character after I know what everyone has has made since I have character indecision, but I guess since you want it for application I'll have to decide now haha.
Jun 22, 2023 3:55 am
Without knowing how long we will be stuck at level one I will pick something decent even at level one and go generic dragonborn paladin. Honor above all!

Your character was on a ship but it was destroyed in a storm. You managed to make a small raft big enough for yourself and something else. Would your character pull up a crewman whom they do not know, their beloved pet or a sack of 10,000 gold?
--His honor would cause him to allow both his pet and unknown crewmember on and He will attempt to swim along beside the raft. If that out of the box solution isn't available then his honor and oath would require him to value a human life over anything else.

- Your character was hired to be the sole guard for a caravan. A griffon suddenly attacks. It scoops up an old lady and flies off. Does your character chase after the griffon or does your character stay with the caravan to protect the other merchants (and their wares)?
Leaving the caravan would put them all in peril as he is the only guard. He will guard the caravan on its way and make an oath to come back and either rescue the woman or avenge her.

- Your character is invited to a fancy party and is given 200 gold to purchase an outfit. What kind of outfit do you buy?
He will dress in fancy clothes that still allows for movement. He is willing to go without his armor, but his weapon is always on him.

Rally allies, but step back and use door as a bottle neck point where you lead the defense.

This scenario sounds really interesting. I'm interested if there is still a spot open?

I've played a good number of games on GP, but only 1 or 2 D&D. It is quite a while since I played D&D 5E, so probably at beginner level.
Jun 22, 2023 5:30 am
Questions - since group of adventurers arrive in dwarf town, should players expect that dwarf attitude toward races other than dwarf will be s per PHB (there is an article SLOW TO TRUST in dwarf chapter.). I believe so - given story say they don't even trust dwarf lived among humans.
That would probably mean picking dwarf race for a PC wouldn't be fair in a way, would it?
Jun 22, 2023 7:15 am
Hi new to PbP but not RPG's - really keen to dive in as its getting harder to get people around a table.

My proposed PC
Yorin - Dwarf Fighter

Yorin has a soft spot for the small and defenceless - so he would attempt to save his pet (most likely a cat). He would let the gold sink and attempt to offer any remaining aid he could to crewman.

Yorin hefts his axe over his shoulder and declares "Ay, that is a mighty beast and a mighty quest - onward to slay the Griffon!" before setting off to chase down the beast and save the old lady.

Yorin would spend the money first on a hot bath (desperately needed) and then purchase a simple outfit - leather boots and pants, a linen tunic and leather vest, and finally felt cap with a green feather. If budget allows it a silver ring or two wouldn't harm the look.

Seeing the mighty challenge before him, Yorin begins to foam at the mouth slightly "A fine death - join me or flee friends I have orcs to KILL"

Look forward to hearing from you GreenDragonPage :)

Dwarves in general are slow to trust, none more so than hill dwarven nobles who try their best to live away from outsiders and the poor. Picking a dwarf is perfectly acceptable! Think of all the cool roleplaying opportunities you might have if you did play a dwarf, trying to balance your role in a "slot to trust" society with your friendship and bond with the other player characters. I think it would be fun! :)

Brilliant! I will start working on building a character and send that over when I get the invite.

Here is the answer to those questions;
- Your character was on a ship but it was destroyed in a storm. You managed to make a small raft big enough for yourself and something else. Would your character pull up a crewman whom they do not know, their beloved pet or a sack of 10,000 gold?
Pull up the crewman. Gotta have someone to eat later! :-) No, just joking, as survival is more likely with two.

- Your character was hired to be the sole guard for a caravan. A griffon suddenly attacks. It scoops up an old lady and flies off. Does your character chase after the griffon or does your character stay with the caravan to protect the other merchants (and their wares)?
Staying with the caravan, as his job is to protect it, and a larger group will better defend itself.

- Your character is invited to a fancy party and is given 200 gold to purchase an outfit. What kind of outfit do you buy?
Something very stylish, but subtle. Doesn't like to flaunt wealth

Call in my allies, as they are going to be hunted down by the orcs anyway, so better we act as a group.

Definitely interested. I can post daily (for the most part). I've got the 5e PHB, have read it (I'm odd, I know!) but have never used it for a game. I'm drawn to the storytelling aspects rather than to the combat/mechanics side. I'm fairly new to RPGs, PnP, and to this site. If that's acceptable and you've got slots, my responses to your questions are listed below. Thanks.

Hi GreenDragonPage,

I love the game detail and description, if you still have a spot I would be interested in joining please.

I would really like to play a simple Halfling thief. I think a classic race/class combo would been suited to such an adventure as this.

* Your character was on a ship but it was destroyed in a storm. You managed to make a small raft big enough for yourself and something else. Would your character pull up a crewman whom they do not know, their beloved pet or a sack of 10,000 gold?
- This would be hard choice but he would save the crewman. The gold, though tempting, and the beloved pet will not help him survive. The crewman would have better sea knowledge thus increasing his chances of survival.

* Your character was hired to be the sole guard for a caravan. A griffon suddenly attacks. It scoops up an old lady and flies off. Does your character chase after the griffon or does your character stay with the caravan to protect the other merchants (and their wares)?
- Chase the bird for who knows what adventure this may bring, and the old lady would surely offer a great reward to her saviour.

* Your character is invited to a fancy party and is given 200 gold to purchase an outfit. What kind of outfit do you buy?
- Something of current fashion but not flashy, an outfit which will allow him to be the grey man and move amongst the crowd unnoticed.

* Your character is leading an expedition into an abandoned mine, hunting down some orcish raiders. After bursting through a door, you are ambushed by 30 enemies! Your character was the first one in the room. Do you encourage your allies to sally forth to attack the orcs or do you close the door and attempt to hold the orcs off, so your companions can flee/regroup?
- He would slam the door and encourage those with him to organise themselves to make their stand at the doorway, weakening the Orcs advantage of numbers.

Apologies but I don't want - in my newbie enthusiasm - to over-commit and not do justice to a slot (if one were to come forth), so I'd like to withdraw my application please.

- Your character was on a ship but it was destroyed in a storm. You managed to make a small raft big enough for yourself and something else. Would your character pull up a crewman whom they do not know, their beloved pet or a sack of 10,000 gold?

He would pull up the crewman. It was not long ago he needed a hand, and he'll be damned to not return that eternal favor

- Your character was hired to be the sole guard for a caravan. A griffon suddenly attacks. It scoops up an old lady and flies off. Does your character chase after the griffon or does your character stay with the caravan to protect the other merchants (and their wares)?

The clear threat is this griffon, and the old lady should be spared such a horrific death if possible. He was spared from death, and that debt will always drive him.

- Your character is invited to a fancy party and is given 200 gold to purchase an outfit. What kind of outfit do you buy?

A respectable garb for the party, and donate the excess to the local church. They will have a greater need than him.

I brace the door with all my might, shouting back that the odds do not favor them, and to flee or prepare. His life was spared once, and perhaps now is his time to repay that debt.

I'm up to join a game. I've started running my own game on this platform, but the speed leaves an itch to be scratched, and I have an old character concept I'd be up for trying!
Jun 25, 2023 9:02 pm
I like the dwarven-themed intrigue and would be honored if I could join your adventure. I've been playing DnD for 40+ years. Got the original box set under the Christmas tree in 1980.

I've been wanting to run a Half Elf druid for some time and this setting I think fits.

- Your character was on a ship but it was destroyed in a storm. You managed to make a small raft big enough for yourself and something else. Would your character pull up a crewman whom they do not know, their beloved pet or a sack of 10,000 gold?
Assuredly, my animal companion who has watched my back when I’ve slept for as long as I can recall. I owe my companion the debt and would repay it. Besides, the sailor is the reason I’m in this mess and its well known that sailors are a morally decrepit lot who would probably eat me and my animal friend, then rifle my pockets for the change.

- Your character was hired to be the sole guard for a caravan. A griffon suddenly attacks. It scoops up an old lady and flies off. Does your character chase after the griffon or does your character stay with the caravan to protect the other merchants (and their wares)?

The circle of life is capricious and at times seemingly cruel. Can’t fault the griffon, its chicks need to eat too. If I had the capability to help that poor old lady (she’s probably lived a full life), I would. However, as I was hired to be the only guard for the caravan (which the outfitters should be ashamed for being so cheap on security), I must consider the safety of the many outweigh that of the few.

- Your character is invited to a fancy party and is given 200 gold to purchase an outfit. What kind of outfit do you buy?
Uggh. Formal parties are so stiff. The clothes are insufferably designed for appearance and not for comfort. If forced, forced I say, I would purchase conservatively tasteful clothing for the event. I can clean up nicely and do appreciate a well-tailored outfit…. Yet in all likely hood, I would quickly slip outside to a balcony, patio, or outside lawn to feel more relaxed.

Leading?! Something has gone horribly wrong! Well, quick calculations of the odds pretty much means I’m not making it, so might as well make a fight of it. I would understand if the party shut the door behind me, but I wouldn’t complain if they came to my aid either. Everyone has got to make their decisions in life.

Hi! It has been a while since I played 5E and I am new to PBP games but your campaign setting sounds amazing. Most of my time has been spent with other game systems as a GM and I am really looking forward to an engaging pbp post game where I can remove my GM hat and enjoy the story. Would really love to join you. Considering a Half-elf Sorcerer with the Wild Magic bloodline.

Your character was on a ship but it was destroyed in a storm. You managed to make a small raft big enough for yourself and something else. Would your character pull up a crewman whom they do not know, their beloved pet or a sack of 10,000 gold?

He would pull up his beloved pet first, no doubt. His loyalty is to those he knows as they have accepted him despite the strange magical things that constantly occur around him.

- Your character was hired to be the sole guard for a caravan. A griffon suddenly attacks. It scoops up an old lady and flies off. Does your character chase after the griffon or does your character stay with the caravan to protect the other merchants (and their wares)?

Protect the caravan he was hired by. Duty and honor are important to him as he has always had to work twice as hard to prove himself, first as a half-elf, and then as his wild magic began to manifest itself. He would hope to be asked to conduct a rescue mission but would hold his ground until he could ask permission to conduct one.

- Your character is invited to a fancy party and is given 200 gold to purchase an outfit. What kind of outfit do you buy?

Something understated. Dark blue robes with little or no ornamentation, comfortable new boots, and and a large brimmed hat. Preferring to blend into the crowd and see what he can learn by observation.

Hold the door and try to hold off the orcs in a valiant attempt to save everyone else. Knowing that to encourage aid would lead to his friends deaths, he would rather sacrifice himself so they could leave to complete the mission.

Thanks for your consideration.

I'd like to throw my hat into the ring. I'm wanting to do a Halfling Divination Wizard for the portent cheese but I have a way to make it palatable. I own a Harrow deck, which is a Pathfinder product that acts as an in-universe Tarot deck that's based on the 6 attributes and the 9 alignments. I think it fits the character.

Below are the answers to the example questions from the intro.

- Your character was on a ship but it was destroyed in a storm. You managed to make a small raft big enough for yourself and something else. Would your character pull up a crewman whom they do not know, their beloved pet or a sack of 10,000 gold?

1. Keeping his deck of divination cards dry was priority number one. After pulling together the parts and bindings for a makeshift raft, he looked around and immediately knew Fate had asked him to make a choice. A stranger who was left alive in the storm or a merchant's chest brimming with gold. A drawn card later, the wizard rowed off with the precious cargo.

- Your character was hired to be the sole guard for a caravan. A griffon suddenly attacks. It scoops up an old lady and flies off. Does your character chase after the griffon or does your character stay with the caravan to protect the other merchants (and their wares)?

2. The cards had warned of an imminent danger to the caravan but the leader had disregarded the portent. Once the griffon had taken his prize, the little wizard was begged to intervene. After consulting the local spirits via a reading, he decided to stick with the agreement he made to the group and he'd check again after the job.

- Your character is invited to a fancy party and is given 200 gold to purchase an outfit. What kind of outfit do you buy?

3. A smart pair of leather trousers with suspenders, a hand molded deck carrier for his belt, a cotton shirt and sturdy leather shoes. All underneath a whimsical robe covered with stars and mythical creatures. It gave him options as he was warned by his cards of a possible issue at the insuing party.

4. Divination often is up to interpretation. And in this instance an "jubilant crowd" was technically correct as the orc war-party hollered when they saw the little wizard. He had led his companions into a trap. It would only be fitting for him to pay for his bad advice. He would use his magic to slow the hoard so his party could escape. His last words ringing through the halls of the mine forever more as a warning to future diviners.
