Chapter 1: The Great Grain Robbery

Jul 16, 2023 2:56 pm
Here and there in the wilds of the Verduran Forest, a seemingly normal plant suddenly reveals themself as a leshy, a curious little human-shaped plant crafted by a druid as a companion or minion. Sometimes, leshys outlive their druid creators, while many others are set free to live their own lives. Most of those who live in the Verduran Forest today have stories along these lines, yet recently the forest’s clusters of
leshys have seemed thinner and fewer. You are but four of these stories.

It’s hardly unusual for the leshys of Verduran to come and go as they please, but this morning it has become impossible to ignore the fact that your numbers have dwindled significantly. Many of those who remain grow fearful, and as the larger and more powerful leshys in the area, it’s your duty to protect the smaller spirits. It’s time to admit something is wrong. It’s time to investigate.

The latest vanished locals are a pair of lavender leshys who often played down by a nearby river crossing. So far, no one’s been to the river to look for clues and you have been tasked to do so as you are the closest thing the local leshys have to an authority—they and their missing companions are very delicate creatures, unable to even speak, and so can offer little assistance.

Bottlespeaker surveys the Leshy's of the Verduran Forest. The news of the missing pair disquiets him and his beloved daughter, Twinsprout seems unnerved. He commands his familiar to take are rest in his gourd, then seeks any Leshy that would have known the missing part well. Perhaps they saw something unnatural?

"...Lavender" Briarthorn grumbled as he gathered with the others. The fairly large, middle aged or older, well armored, well armed, root leshy stood with his scarred root like appendages crossed in front of his chest just below his face. Small seedpods adorned his upper half, showing through in the areas that weren't covered by his armor and weapons. The acorns hung like ornaments and as he grumbled his whole upper half shook and a creaking could be heard along with the rustling of the seedpods against his gnarled bark.

"Probably out rubbing up against things making things smell fresh and clean"
Aug 1, 2023 4:52 pm
Popcorn grumbles as she adjusts her grip on her flail. The snapdragon leshy wears a perpetual scowl on her face. "Whatever the case, we’re not going to find out just standing around here. Let’s go!"

She leads the way toward the river crossing.
Aug 1, 2023 11:37 pm
Reaching Rings was meditating near the base of a tree. To most, they would have looked like a giant blue mushroom, and would pass by. That suited them fine, as when deep in thought, they preferred not to be bothered. Besides, the missing Leshy were trouble enough for now. As much as the mysteries of the universe needed contemplation, family, as it were, comes first.
They stood up, not that much taller then when they were sitting, and spoke; "I agree with popcorn. 'Failing is hard, but 'tis worse never to try'. If we have no clues to follow, we should simply start moving."

The river’s rapid flow makes it difficult for lightweight creatures like leshys to cross. Normally, swimming isn’t required, however. In her youth, Popcorn found herself at a loss at this very spot when the sprites she enjoyed playing with flew across the water with ease and taunted her from the far side. Though there was little she could do that day other than fume in rage, Popcorn returned the next morning and used vines and fallen branches to build a leshy-sized rope bridge strung between a pair of trees on opposite banks.
In the years since, many local leshys have learned of the rope bridge and come to appreciate its convenience, and particularly enjoyed using the bridge as a sort of swing to sit on and sway back and forth over the river.

When you arrive at the river you see Popcorn’s carefully crafted handiwork lies in ruins. All that remains of the rope bridge are fragments of vines hanging from the trees on both banks.

Briarthorn looked at the rope bridge in tattered ruins and uttered a low sound like bark scraping on bark, "What a waste." he then turned to Popcorn, "You build a fine bridge lass, this type of malice has no place here" he then looked back to the area around bridge. He began to look at the ground trying to find some hint as to what might have happened here, a scuffle, a storm, something destroyed this bridge. Then there was the missing leshy's, was he able to spot tracks from their tiny fine footed roots?

I'd like to try a survival check (maybe the Track Action) to try and figure out what happened here, roll below.

You prooomis?! Why are your friends? Not that big man who made camp here? He was not nice!
Can we play catch?
Or Sports?
She grins. Do leshy do sports? Or do you just grow?
Reaching Rings knows that in the summertime big humans come to the meadow to do sports. It is almost always a rough and fair one and by the end of it, they have shed all their colourful bark and just lie contentful in the grass. He still havent figured out why they need to make all that sport before they can enjoy the grass, but it might have something to do with the sap rough one makes.

When you push Glimmer for more infomation she continues to describes the camp’s occupant as a human man with shiny teeth, messy red hair, a green and yellow outfit, and muddy boots. When she arrived, he’d just finished yelling at a squirming burlap sack to "Be quiet or I’ll throw more than your toys in the fire!" The sack went still after that, and the man enjoyed his lunch in peace. Glimmer watched for a bit but didn’t confront the man; she then grew bored when he took too long, so she settled in on her tree branch for a nap.

"We do promise to come back and play, though little Leshies only can play gentle games" Bottlespeaker replies. After Glimmer provides the information Bottlespeaker asks with quiet anger "Can you take us to this camp? We urgently need to ... hmm, play a game with him"

It takes time to get answers. You were in hot pursuit up till now, but now you spend time talking, yelling and convincing people that your quest in important. But finally, you are directed to an elder gentleman
When you describe the human you are tracking, and give him Glimmers description, he recognises him immediately. That sounds like ol’ Darius Wick for sure! He describes him as a bit of a strange fellow who isn’t much one for chatting and who tends to stay in his store on the south side of town. Crystals and Candlewax he calls his shop. Strange fellow, I tell you. He seems more interested in hosting parties for his fancy friends from the city than he does being a part of Petalbrook—not sure why he sticks around!

Everyone in town can direct you to his shop and soon you push open the door of Crystal and Candlewax. As the shop’s door swings open, a crystalline wind chime rings pleasantly. Far less pleasant is the shop’s overpowering aroma of jasmine flowers, which rises like a curtain across the threshold. Crystals of all shapes and sizes are displayed in fine glass cabinets and hung from the ceiling, while colourful candles adorn shelves that line the walls and floor.

Galan
I’m terribly sorry, it’s just I’ve never seen a walking talking plant before. Are you... customers? Can I help you?" Says the young teenage boy behind the counter..

The concentrated smell of flowers in this spacious laboratory is somehow even stronger than it was upstairs. Long wooden tables along the south wall are covered with candles. A large, unlit stone fireplace takes up the room’s rounded southwest corner. The north wall features two rounded tables, one holding a cauldron of stew and the other riddled with burn marks and covered in wax. Similar scorch marks and splatters
appear on the floor at the center of the room, beneath a massive cauldron of gently bubbling wax. Next to the bubbling cauldron, a towering set of sturdy wooden shelves are laden with a hodgepodge of tools for candle making and alchemy. Three doors lead out of this room, two along the east wall and a third in the northwest corner.

The ceiling of this stone room is 15 feet high. Its central feature, the bubbling cauldron, is filled with jasmine-scented wax.

Once he reached the door he pushed past Reaching Rings and into the room making his way to where Darus was standing in the room. Once in front of him he stared him down, the eyes sunk into his old twisted root and bark covered face unflinching as he looked up at him. This armored arsenal of arboreal anchors wanted answers, and fear or blade would seemingly be his methods for extracting it.

I think when Darus used that potion that was an interact action which has the manipulate trait. I think that means I get to make an opportunity attack against him. If it critically hits then it disrupts his action.

The sound of snapping, tree bark clattering, a groan of pain, and then a snarl was all that could be heard from Briarthorn as the vicious attack carved into the roots that made up his body, somehow avoid the metal armor that adorned it.

"I gave you a chance!" Briarthorn roared as he lashed out at Darius with his longsword but as he did so he extended the roots of his hand so as to snag Darius by his clothes and pull him out of his stance, hoping he had put him off balance enough for a second swing of his longsword, before stepping back and leveling his longsword ready to parry any riposte the man brought at him showing off his masterful command of fighting skills.
OOC:

Action 1: Snagging Strike (Requirements You have one hand free, and your target is within reach of that hand.
You combine an attack with quick grappling moves to throw an enemy off balance as long as it stays in your reach. Make a Strike while keeping one hand free. If this Strike hits, the target is flat-footed until the start of your next turn or until it’s no longer within the reach of your hand, whichever comes first.)

Flat Footed Condition for Reference: You’re distracted or otherwise unable to focus your full attention on defense. You take a –2 circumstance penalty to AC. Some effects give you the flat-footed condition only to certain creatures or against certain attacks. Others—especially conditions—can make you universally flat-footed against everything. If a rule doesn’t specify that the condition applies only to certain circumstances, it applies to all of them; for example, many effects simply say "The target is flat-footed." Flat Footed Condition on Archives of Nethys

Action 2: Strike with Longsword (MAP -5)

Action 3: Dueling Parry (Requirements You are wielding only a single one-handed melee weapon and have your other hand or hands free. You can parry attacks against you with your one-handed weapon. You gain a +2 circumstance bonus to AC until the start of your next turn as long as you continue to meet the requirements.) (AC is now 23, Current HP: 24/49)
OOC:
EDIT!
Forgot about Sickened Condition, so that would be -1 to those attack rolls as well. And forgot to take my persistent damage and to recover

So, with those rolls, still on fire, and now down to 20/49 HP

The Homunculus at the door is severely battered and bruised or rather misshapen as part of its construction is wax. It disengates and flies to the cauldron where it dives into the wax, regaining some of its shape.

Over by Darius, Briarthorn the Roothless tricks with root and sword have little effect, as Darius defences are up. (Darius AC 18)
He claws Briarthorn, bites some of the flailing branches from the protective tree and strikes again with his crystalline claws.

The Homunculus by Darius side throws globs of wax at Reaching Rings and Bottlespeaker. The glob that hit Reaching Rings slides into the cracks of his armour. (Persistant fire damage of 1d4*2)

Thanks for the heal, I think that leaves me conscious but prone.
Briarthorn's eyes snapped open, he recognized he is staring at a floor, he could feel the damage rendered to his body and cursed himself for not being better at parrying the opponents attacks. He could also feel the linger warmth of healing magic, something he'd felt several times before in his life. He grabbed his sword and got to one knee, then stood. Reaching Rings was now next to him, "What took you so long?" Briarthorn said glancing at him to show he was jibbing him. All the while though he was taking measure of his footing, readying his blade, and attempting to find an opening to strike out at Darius. This had gone on long enough.

Bottlespeaker finds the area around the cauldron to be a slippery place and finds the likelihood of falling flat on his face high. But the risk of the Homunculus is there. Putting a lid on it and putting out the fire, would trap them down there. Perhaps permanently once all the wax has hardened.
OOC:
According to the adventure, the Homunculus would fight, flee to the cauldron to heal, and fight again. That is going to take forever in PBP and not progress the story. The encounter have been won with a critical hit and the rest is just mob-up :)
A quick look through the rest of the rooms tells you that (1) is Darius's bedroom. Fine furnishings and imported Qadiran carpet in this
bedroom are marred by soot and wax stains. There is a desk with some papers.

The cluttered storeroom (2) is packed with alchemical tools in various states of repair, prototype candles, and fragments of crystals.

Sep 3, 2023 12:35 pm
Briarthorn sheathed his blade and then found a wall to put his back against and slid down it, the roots of his body making an eerie scratching sound as he did so. He was weary from having been knocked out, still very injured, and needed a moment to catch his breath.

"I don't see the Lavender's anywhere, do you all?" he said to the others as he pulled out a set of healer's tools and began to patch himself up with the natural remedies within.

As he begins to try and set one of his leg branches that had been dislocated during the fight back into place it snaps and Briarthorn roars with pain!

i'd like to make a thorough search of the bedroom, or make sure there's no sign the lavenders came to any harm here.
Sep 3, 2023 6:27 pm
Reaching Rings searches the bedroom, including the desk. There he find Darius’s shipping manifests and accounts. Among the meticulous descriptions of crystals, candles, and alchemical concoctions, one entry stands out: a recent order for "house plants—lavender" made by Lady Constance Meliosa, successfully delivered very recently by hand to her manor in the nearby town of Rosentry. These same notes make clear that this order is to be a centrepiece for an upcoming gala hosted in her estate’s garden tomorrow at teatime.

Bottlespeaker pulls some berries and imbues them with a sliver of his essence, before handing them to Briarthorn "These should help ease the pain"

"We are exposed in this cursed place, let's be focused in our efforts. Let's find what happened to our Lavender friends then find a safe place to rest" Bottlespeaker pulls Twinsport from his gourd "Go watch the entrance for trouble little one, I want to take a closer look at those crystals"

I googled it because I knew they didn't have organs for waste removal but wasn't sure how they ridded themselves of metabolic waste (plants, not leshys in particular, it's Pathfinder so anything is possible) but plants excrete their metabolic waste through the process of diffusion through pore like elements in their leaves called stomata.
