The lady's expression and demeanor changes slightly, as though a weight has been lifted from her - or at least that it's weight has been decreased.

She clasps her hands before her in a grateful gesture, "Thank you, for your willingness. And I am gladdened that you see the truth of my words... Commander Andireg had told me you were good people, only true heroes could have done what you did, returning my children to safety.

And I fear these final steps may exceed my ability to see them through alone.
", her eyes flick back and forth across the ground now, as she searches her mind for where to begin.

"So, I believe, there is only one possible path forward now...

I had been working for years with a person who calls themself Astalor the Collector. They claimed to be a dealer in antiquities, and indeed I had purchased tomes from them over the years to aid me in my research. Well...

To make a long story short, I believe this Collector has either come to work for the Shadow after some years, or perhaps they always have...

Astalor is behind the abduction of my children, he had sent an agent to me, demanding... well, the part of 'the puzzle' which I possess. He has asked for it casually, before, indirectly, in an 'academic colleagues'-fashion, and I always of course denied him. And so it seems he was driven to extreme action.

He... must have pieced together what I was doing, or been told... and knew he could complete the necessary steps, if only he knew what I knew. And so it was to be the life of two of my children, for the fate of the Free Peoples."
, a tear gathers and falls from her eye.

"I turned his agent away... Am I a horrible mother for having chosen the Free Peoples?"

The question is spoken softly and distant, as her eyes gaze into the center of the earth, and really it seems to be posed to herself.

She sobs once nearly buckling at the waist, but then gathers herself and takes a deep breath, clears her throat and continues, a terrible and barely concealed wrath behind her words, "At the very least, we must stop Astalor... For I don't believe he will cease in trying to get the information he wants.

And further, if he wants what I know, so desperately, then he must know that he has his own last piece. Or whomever HIS master is must have it...

He had claimed not to have the most recent records I needed, but perhaps he lied...

Anyway, he is our next step.

I have agents of my own, and I have never known where he resides, we always met publicly to talk and transact. And after he confronted me for the lives of my children, I set my own agents to work, finding out where he lives.

I don't know if or when to expect word. I received their last communication just a couple days ago, and they're search has brought them to Gondor of all places...

But, so, for now, we wait, - we give my agents a bit more time, we rest, recuperate, and prepare... to find Astalor, and whatever it is he knows.
"

There is a grave seriousness that has drawn her face, lovely in it's middle-agedness, into something hollow-looking and forbidding.

Seònaid stands from her seat and approaches Lady Blackridge, gently laying her hand on the woman's arm.

"You did the right thing m'lady. There are those who may scold you for endangering your children, but I am not one of them. The safety of the many must always outweigh the wellbeing of the few, such is what we are taught by our tutors as younglings, and so it is proven by your actions."

Seònaid turns to the rest of the group, "I shall embark on this with you."

Turning back to the Lady Blackridge, "The gang we met in Umbar were ruthless, and refused to stop fighting even when it was in their interests. If this is the type Astalor will recruit it may be that your agents are not coming back. What can you tell us of what they shared with you so far? I am loathe to lose any more time, as things are moving fast now."

OOC:
So, just a heads up, an integral part of AiME is "Fellowship Phases". Please give the section a look in the Players Guide, if you've not yet. It's essentially a more structured and robust and useful version of vanilla 5E's "Downtime".

It's also meant to mirror the Tolkienian narrative trope of finding allies, taking time mid adventure to foster relationships, and recuperate. Think like Rivendell after the trolls, and Beorn's cabin after the goblin caves, and Lake Town after Mirkwood, in the Hobbit right?

But it's also pretty important to use Fellowship Phases mechanically. In particular in this moment perhaps, because among the many other things Fellowship Phases can do for you is it can decrease your Shadow.

So, to be very meta and transparent: waiting for her agents to find the location is just narrative positioning for us to have a Fellowship Phase. 😅

We will level up, you'll get some rewards, and you can each choose a Fellowship Phase activity to pursue. Please note: you can do lots of things with it. Not just remove Shadow. And so if you want to engage with the Shadow mechanic more... You can do something else with your Fellowship.

We will dive into that, after this scene is completed.
"They were about to embark on a ship to Pelargir, from Umbar. Digging up and following a paper trail is tedious and time consuming and requires the manipulation of bureaucracy. But I don't know how else to locate Astalor.

I don't know what their next move was to be, other than continuing to follow the paper trail, and inquiring after 'witnesses'. They may have already moved on from Pelargir by now. It is the biggest port city in... anywhere, save Umbar, that I know of. It could just be a pass through.

To try to catch up to my agents would be folly.

They are good at what they do. And they are in the middle of their process.

I trust them, and I fear we have nothing to do but wait. If they don't check in this or each following week, then we can begin to take other actions.

Unless you have some other proposal to find him faster?
"
Dec 29, 2023 10:01 pm
"Hm. It sounds like you have weighed all the options and proposed the best course of action, my fair lady. We'll wait although it is hard with evil afoot.
I suggest we make the most of the time we are given. I'm sure we can all find some good ways to prepare ourselves."
Duinhir says. Then hesitates for a bit as if picking up courage.
"What you have said about these seeing stone... Palantirs. I would like to learn more about them. What they are and why they disappeared. I would like to study the matter more closely, perhaps with your aid, Lady Blackridge?"
Duinhir spends the next few days in the libraries of Minas Tirith trying to learn more about the Palantirs. If Lady Blackridge is willing and able to share information, books, and tomes on the subject this would be the starting point otherwise he'll do his own research.
OOC:
In the fellowship phase mechanically Duinhir is doing the Research Lore. A roll of Intelligence (History) with DC 15 is required and you get to ask the GM three questions on the matter.
Those are:
What is a Palantir?
How did the Palantir in Osgiliath disappear?
What attempts have previously been made to recover it?

Cirion will try to focus on his craft in order to take his mind off the morally dubious acts they were forced to perform during the rescue mission. The city set ablaze by their effort, and the thought that innocent people, including children, might have been endangered weighs heavy on his soul.

Finding a local craftsman with the right tools for ropemaking, he offers to help and is soon immersed in the old family craft.

Seònaid returns to her family home in Minas Tirith. She spends her evenings re-telling tales about her adventures, but takes pains to keep identifying details of Umbar those stories. She is still suspicious about how the raiders entered the city, and has no wish for unfriendly ears to decide it was her and her companions who rescued the children.

She spends her time helping her brothers at their father's merchant house, aiding her mother in preparing family meals, and in time begins to feel once more at home. She visits other merchants, friends of her family, and shares tales from the roads with them. A habit of hers which has often given insights into the movements of people, and dangers, across the lands of men.
OOC:
Reading thru the section on Undertakings she will go for Heal Corruption. Not sure if she gets any bonus for doing this while in her home city of Minas Tirith?

Éothain's mentor once told him, "A good song contains more truth than the most scholarly book."

True or not, Éothain spends his time with the ministrels in Minas Tirith, learning songs about (if possible) the Kin-Strife War, the Palantiri, Morgoth, the city of Osgiliath, and the "Master Stone" of Osgiliath. To repay the kindness of his hosts, Éothain volunteers to help any of their noble friends with tips on riding, training, or caring for their horses,
OOC:
Éothain's activity is also Research Lore. He is interested in the lore concerning:
1. What are the powers of the "Master Stone?"
2. Who were the main leaders in the Kin-Stife War?
3. What dark powers does Morgoth have?

OOC:
Thanks to you all for providing ideas for your Fellowship Phase Undertakings.

However, I should have said this up front, you have other options available to you beyond the default ones in the Player's Guide.

See the OOC Resource Thread here: https://gamersplane.com/forums/thread/29869/?p=1540499#p1540499

So, everyone is welcome to re-evaluate the choice they made, and do something different.

However if you want to keep what you did, you will keep your roll.

But, that said, I also don't like the result of "Nothing happens.", that's not very fun, particularly in PbP where these will be so few and far between. So even upon failure to meet the DC, you will still receive some minimum benefit from the endeavor.

For those interested in Research, Lady Black ridge will give you a minimum level of information regarding the palantirii, since you asked.

But there is deeper information that she either may not know, or just may not know you well enough yet to give you. So you can still get something out of a Research check.

I'm also going to do a quick bit of narration here to get us to our rewards, and the narrative positioning so that hopefully the Fellowship options will make some more sense.
Lady Blackridge is happy to go into some more detail on the Palantirii but at a later time and place, as she wants to return to the dinner before too long, and also she says her own knowledge is limited by the fog of history.

She tells you that neither her husband, nor even the King Steward know of her role in this war against the Shadow, and that it is a secret kept to, both, protect them, and to guard against too many eyes and ears being aware of what's going on, and so hopefully to prevent there from being too many points of failure.

The rest of the evening is spent eating good food and making pleasantries, as well as making some basic arrangements for an "honoring ceremony", in which Gondor wants to formally acknowledge your deeds.

It doesn't have to be a public ceremony if you don't wish it to be. However the Steward's Regent tells you all that you will each be receiving the title of "Homeguard of Gondor" (a title of low nobility), which is accompanied by a holding in Minas Tirith. Either a small dwelling on the lowest tier of Minas Tirith, or a small tract of land in Pelennor Fields.

Furthermore, you are each to be presented with armaments or other gear from the armory of Gondor, worth up to 100 silvers.
OOC:
Also, please go ahead and level up to level 2 if you have not :)

During their time in Minis Tirith, Éothain suggests to his companions that they meet regularly to share stories and results of their activities in the city.
OOC:
Éothain will keep his choice of Research Lore. He prefers a private honoring ceremony, unless his companions (or his hosts) prefer otherwise.
Jan 10, 2024 8:51 am
Agreeing to talk more about the Palantir later, Duinhir returns to the dinner party with the rest of the group. The conversation has given him a lot to think about and he may seem a bit absent-minded for the remainder of the evening. He retires early.

The next few days he spent studying and talking to lady Blackridge as much as possible.
He also prefers a quite discreet ceremony that would draw too much attention to them. As much a force of habit as a precaution.
OOC:
Keeping the History roll for Researching Lore.

Cirion cannot believe he will receive a title. This journey has already changed his simple life forever. He tries to learn as much as he can about the city of Minas Tirith, trying to imagine living here as one of its citizens.
OOC:
feels appropriate for Cirion to approach the local craftsmen as previously indicated in an attempt to clear his mind. Happy to keep his failed roll.

Will look up the relevant rules for levelling up to lv2 and propose some new equipment to buy within the generous 100 silver budget ASAP

OOC:
Going to stay with Heal Corruption, and providing rolls below;
A straight Insight roll if that is appropriate
An Insight with Advantage roll, in case being in her home of Minas Tirith counts as a "Sanctuary"
Seònaid is taken aback by the honouring, and is unsure how to respond. She thinks of how proud her family will be, and how it will also bring honour to them. But, like Duinhir, she prefers a discreet ceremony.
OOC:
Will look up the rules on leveling up to 2 and update my character sheet in the next day or so.

Please note that the silver doesn't have to be just spent on weapons or armor, it can be other general adventuring gear including herbs or a mount.

@Stefron I think Lady Blackridge can and will answer the latter 2 of your Research questions for "free". She would know both of those, and there's nothing about the questions or information that she would have any reason to keep from you all.

So... You can pick 2 new questions!

@rpgventurer she would also answer your question 2 for free. That's pretty well known and public history.

And you may choose 1 of your other questions that, despite failing the check, you can either incur 1 automatic point of Shadow to learn the answer to, or without incurring Shadow you can learn of a location that you (all) could travel to, to get the answer (via a side-quest type situation). I'm hesitant to do side quests because even that can take a month or 2 in PBP, but I think I can do something cool yet not too divergent for this...
In the following days, you learn the below information about palantiri and Kin-Strife War:

1. What is a Palantir? (Research) The palantíri were enchanted seeing stones, created by an ancient king of the elves - real magical relics from Ages Long Past. Before there were Men, and the world was young. Seven were given to the Men of Numenor, after the Fall of Numenor to the Shadow. The stones could be used to communicate with one another over any distance that separated them, and could also be used to see across the face of the world - like a telescope that wasn't hindered by the horizon. Only people of great will or power could use the Stones. Generally, no one knows about the existence of palantiri, other than perhaps as something fabled in myth or legend, outside of Kings and their closest advisors.

2. How did the Palantir in Osgiliath disappear? (The Lady) The Osgiliath Stone fell into the waters of the River Anduin when the newly formed Corsairs of Umbar attacked Osgiliath (which at the time, was the capital), during the Kinstrife War. The Stone sat at the top of a great tower called the Dome of Stars. The building was set aflame in the Corsair's attack, and the destruction of it's timbers caused the tower to collapse. The Dome itself, where the Stone was housed, toppled into the river, and the Stone went in with it.

3. What attempts have previously been made to recover it?
(The Lady) There was an initial attempt to dredge the waters of the Anduin, in the immediate aftermath of the war. However only the rubble from the tower, and the Dome of Stars, was found. The Stone was basically then assumed to be destroyed or lost to Man, and basically forgotten for a thousand years, until the predecessors of Lady Black ridge started looking for it again.

4. Who were the main leaders in the Kin-Stife War? (the Lady) The Kin-strife was a civil war of succession, 1500 years ago, waged because an ancient King of Gondor married a woman from Rohan, and some Gondorians would not accept their son as King. This son and King was named Eldacar. He was challenged for his right to rule by his second cousin named Castamir - the Captain of Ships in Umbar (for at the time, Umbar was a part of Gondor). At this time Osgiliath was the capital of Gondor, however after the Kin-strife and the sack of Osgiliath, the capital was moved to Minas Tirith. Eldacar was able to retain the throne, but Gondor lost Umbar and it's lands to the south, and the Corsairs of Umbar formed under Castamir, and would plague Gondor until this very day.
OOC:
@Dr_B despite the failed roll, if Cirion does not incur any Shadow during the following Adventure Phase, he will recover 1 Shadow at the end of it.

@Drakis2 Seonaid does have Advantage on her Shadow Recovery check if she stays in either Pelargir or Minas Tirith for the Fellowship Phase, if that's still the Undertaking you wish to pursue.

broadsword (30s) , with which he has proficiency

fine clothes (15s), to be presentable as a newly-titled dignitary!

I added the horse price list to the first post in the OOC Resource Thread.

A pony is 8 sp. I would note that a Pony is very difficult to control in combat and will most likely flee (whether you're on it or not).

RE: HP per level, you're welcome to choose whichever method you want, each level.

You can take the 5+CON, or you can take your chances at getting something better, and roll for it.

That goes for everyone, thanks for asking!

In your research, you learn of a vault which sat beneath the Shrine to the Valar, in Osgiliath. This vault was described as having a legendarium that contained an accounting of the deeds and powers of Morgoth (along with the other Valar), as they were known at the end of the First Age, which was when Morgoth was banished from Arda.

You all would know, Osgiliath is nothing more than an abandoned ruin of a city now. And has been for almost 500 years, when it was overrun and sacked by orcs and abandoned by Gondor (along with Ithilien, the principality of Gondor east of the Anduin River, adjacent to Mordor).

The portion of the city that is on this, the Minas Tirith, side of the river is considered relatively safe. Gondorian guardsmen (and Duinhir would know; Rangers) patrol the outskirts of the ruin on this side.

But the far side of the river is known to be frequented by goblins and orcs... and potentially worse...
Jan 12, 2024 9:36 pm
Éothain shares his information about the legendarium with the others and asks, "Do you think it’s worth the risk?"
Jan 12, 2024 9:52 pm
Learning much news from the lady, Duinhir starts thinking their way may lead them to Osgiliath, so he starts studying old maps to get a sense of the layout of the former city. Where was the Dome of Stars located? He copies some of the maps with some paper and ink he purchases with his newfound wealth.
The story of Eldacar and Castamir is new to him, so he decides to learn more about the ancient king and his house and lineage trying to trace the line up to present times.
OOC:

2 new questions:
What was the layout of the city of Osgiliath?
Who are the descendants of King Eldacar?

I know the last one might not be relevant to the quest but it just seems like the kind of thing Duinhir would find important.
