Hi folks! Thanks for running this, SpiritualSock511! Dig this game tons and have plans to run it myself. How are you planning on running it? As full-on tactical and crunchy as possible, complete with hex-based battlemaps and all that?
I plan on making my own PC. Is the weekend too late for me to brew something up?

Hi @Harrigan! Glad to have you in the group.
I plan on running the rules as standard as possible, so it should contain all the crunch as originally intended. However, we may need to shift as we go. My concern going into it is that the play-by-post format might slow things down too much, and I want to keep the game engaging.
For combat, I think the best approach will be a hybrid of battle maps and theatre of the mind. I will post an image of the battle as it starts, and then try to post snapshots whenever relevant.
An initial post would look something like this.
In this example, there are 2 characters: Tony and Albert. Tony is facing northeast and Albert if facing Northwest. I imagine that it would play out something like this.
Tony "I take cover south of the rock."
Albert "I stay where I am and lay prone."
Even though Tony has moved. I probably won't update the map at this point. When I do eventually update the map, I would have Tony behind the rock, and use a color or symbol to indicate that Albert is prone.
All that said, I might find that this approach doesn't work well at all and have to change it up. When that happens, I will make suggestions to the group and ask for feedback.

And cool, SS511. I've played it both ways (full maps, full TotM), and it *can* be slow when you go all-out. However, that's kind of what the game is intended to do, so....

Maybe slow isn’t the right word. Slow is fine with me as long as everyone is having fun. I tend to lean towards maps personally.
I downloaded the battle maps directly from the Free League website. I take a screen shot of them and paste them into Excalidraw which is basically a digital white board. The tokens are just basic shapes I draw on top.

@Dmbrainiac: Yes, you can. In this situation, use your command skill. My reasoning is that the boy is essentially "incapacitated" by stress.
However, you don't speak Polish. You'll have a -1 modifier. Instead of rolling d12 for Empathy, you'll roll a d10. If you attempt to calm the boy down, roll a d10, a d8, and briefly describe what you do. On a success, the boy will calm down and be more compliant with the group. On a failure, the boy doesn't calm down, and you're stuck doing this one action for a little while.

Question for @Everyone
Hey everyone,
I've been thinking about how we can handle the game when someone is unable to post for a while. Life can get busy, and we understand that. Our group is relatively large for play-by-post (5 people), so I want to ensure everyone has the ability to keep engaged with the game if they are able and want to.
One idea I had is that if a majority of have responded to a situation, and someone hasn't been able to post for their character or explain their absence for a couple of days, I could step in temporarily and make what I believe is the most reasonable action for their character. The general guideline for posting is 1 a day, so I could step in if they haven't posted in 2 days, but the rest of the group has and the people who have posted agree on a plan.
I'm open to suggestions and want to have an open and friendly discussion about this.
What do you all think?

I think all of us here are, or have been, GM-ing, so we know what it's like to want to keep things moving along. Games that stand still lose their momentum and die. I'm only on my first GM'd game here on GP (and PbP), but I've been running campaigns via email for decades. Once things got going, a leader arose in the group who would steer things with occasional input from the rest. And after getting to know how certain people ran their characters, I would NPC them accordingly in their absence. When critical choices came up, I nagged them. I didn't want to be responsible for their character's death.
Until something like that happens here, I think you'll just have to proceed after the overwhelming majority agrees to an action. You stated your posting terms when you launched the game in the tavern. We have to be honest with ourselves whether or not we can make that commitment. I dropped out of a game here when I realized that the time I needed to put into the game was more than I could commit to.
That being said, I'll let you know right now that on the 27th, I'm going to be offline. I've got hernia surgery that day. If that slows things down, feel free to NPC my guy. If not, I expect to be back online the next day. Sitting at a computer is about all I'm going to be allowed to do for the next few days anyway.

Sounds good to me. I get terribly busy with work from time to time myself, but I try to get my players and GMs a heads up if I’m going to be slow. Auto-piloting a PC or having them fade into the background for a bit when the player isn’t around is totally fine with me.
I ran PBeM games for about 5-10 years before switching to PbP in the early 2000s, ForeverDED. I know that drill all too well!

And it's true: sometimes you can find those small local breweries in Poland (what is not as common as I think it is in countries like UK) that offer very unique tastes. What is more interesting as I don't think we have a long breweries traditions or certainly not as long as some other countries. Especially considering that world wars and the 2nd specially destroyed a lot of our infrastructure in many fields, this too.

The discovery process was a bit convoluted. A local beer importer apparently thought that it was worth including in their catalog. The alcohol distributor that services a store that I shop at includes this importer in their catalog. The beer manager at the store thought to include the Black Boss Porter in his imports/craft beer aisle. As I love porters, especially Baltic Porters, I was intrigued. At $2 US for 500 mL, the price was just begging me to try it. I did and I love it!
I don't know if you're into that style of beer, but if you like your beer dark and malty, maybe you will. If not, I know that they offer different styles of beer. Be warned though, it clocks in at 9.4% ABV, which is a lot more than the typical pilsner or lager. :)

Dice Pool Code Update
Hey everyone, rolling 10, 11, or 12 counts as an additional success. The dice pool code for our game only counts these numbers once. I reached out to a moderator to see if I could update the dice code to reflect that. However, we're limited on what we can do, and I can't update the code to show the total number of successes for those higher numbers. What I've done instead is added some additional formatting to make those numbers really stand out.
Here is an example, that result of 11 should really = 2.

I'm old school and prefer the dice results without accoutrement -- but I'm fine if the others want 'em. The checkmarks are neat. Remember a 10 should get 2. ;)

There's one small problem: No one in the rest of the group speaks Polish, so communication with the boy is going to be tough (which was always a possibility) unless Pedrop comes on board with a character that speaks Polish.

I'm still relatively new to Discord, so I feel like I'm still learning the ropes. I'm better than I was as I've been online with it more in the last couple of months. Still, I'm not one to spend much time with it. If it's a necessity, I'll do it. I'm not against the idea.

I use Discord heavily, and back all my games on GP with a Discord channel on my own Discord server. However, if not everyone is a steady Discord user, it's probably as effective to just use the GP OOC. Otherwise you risk "leaving some folks behind..."

@saevikas, some things to think about Reed's upcoming turn. I'm assuming Sheepdog will shoot at the guy with the radio. Even if he takes him out, the artillery will continue to fire even if the enemy isn't aiming. There is a possibility that the artillery could drift towards Reed and seriously hurt/kill him, Jakub, and destroy the Humvee.
Reed also has the linguist ability for Russian. With a successful roll on the radio, he could sound like a native Russian. I'm not trying to sway what you do on your turn. Just giving you info to make an informed decision.

He'll actually need to use 1 fast action to get out of prone. He can use his second action to run to another space, but he'll need 2 MOBILITY successes to make it a total of 4 spaces. (He can move 2 hexes normally and 1 additional hex with each success.)

Getting in or out of a vehicle is a slow action. Driving is a fast action. The Humvee has an off-road combat speed of 4 hexes. You can make a DRIVING skill check to drive additional hexes with the possible risk of getting stuck.
Unfortunately, you don't have a lot of great options for directions to drive. Going East will bring you closer to the Artillery fire. North moves you away from combat. Going south drives you closer to the enemies.Example Turn

Cunningham has the group's only radio. If you had it, you could try to find the correct channel. In terms of using the radio, it would be easier to have the enemy radio as it's already on the correct channel.

Checking in now that we've had a couple of combat encounters and are moving to the second "regular" shift.
I'm looking for feedback because I'm new to the pbp format, and I like to keep improving. I'm having fun and want to make sure that everyone is too.
Are there things that you think are working, aren't working well, or things you would like to see changed? My thoughts are that the battle maps help a lot. However, the crunchiness of the system is a challenge, and it seems hard to know what your options are at any given time. I'm trying to help alleviate some of that by adding expandable boxes with my commentary.

I think that you're doing a great job. The battle maps are fantastic. They're essential for visualizing the scene. And you've been a tremendous help with the rules, listing out our options. I'm having a great time with this. :)

Yes, I am enjoying the game, even if it's pretty far from the types of games I usually play. I agree with Harrigan that there is a lot of little details to keep track of. I don't envy your job as a GM, but you are doing an admirable one!

Everyone currently has 5 experience points. You can spend them during a shift when you rest or sleep. I added a post to the reference page if you want to know more.

As a general rule, I assume that everyone's weapons are fully reloaded before any combat. It makes sense that your characters would take any free moment to do that.

Free League seems to think WWIII forced us to finally get our act together and issue a standard issue cigarette lighter to battery charger in every vehicle. 😅This is the rule I’m using for charging the NVG battery.

Did Cunningham wake up when the Humvee came to a stop? And does he get full credit for sleeping? If he's still asleep, I don't want to ruin him getting his rest (might need it later). But if he's awake, then I'd like to put in his two cents regarding the blast crater.

He would wake up when they stopped, and he’ll still get the full rest for the shift. It’s really that in this entire shift he’s either sleeping or resting. It can be interrupted. The way he would lose the sleep credit in this situation is if he gets out and starts doing something active like keeping watch or scavenging. Waking up and giving his 2 cents won’t affect anything.
Also he only needs to roll for sleep when he’s trying to find a spot to sleep without a camp. Sleeping in the vehicle is an automatic success.

@ForeverDED The +1 modifier actually moves you up a whole die, so you would have rolled a d10 instead of a d8. It doesn't matter because you succeeded, but I wanted to give you a heads up.

I appreciate the offer. At this point, though, I think it would probably be best if I bow out of the game. I've got a lot of other games going on, on this site and another, and I'd rather prioritize the ones that I feel most connected to. You're running a great game here, I just don't think this is the system for me. I appreciate the opportunity to try it out, though! :)

Uh, I've been good with the pace. It's only the three of us, and Harrigan's been traveling for work. If something "exciting" comes along, then the pace will just slow down as we wait for dice rolls.

I've made some updates to the reference threads to hopefully make things clearer. If you have any thoughts on ways to improve it, I'd be happy to hear them. I'd like to eventually run other T2K games. especially ones for players without much experience with the system. I'd use those same posts in those games.
The reason for the updates is that I've seen some other games here on Gamersplane where they work really well. I'm trying to mimic that with this system.

I know that most of you generated your character randomly when started. At that time, I didn't have a realistic idea of how long pbp games go on for. Because of that I want to give everyone the option to swap out any specialties for another. They are all listed in this thread.

I've only been on GP (and it's my first PbP site) for 8 months. Still learning as well. It's a bit like PbeM for me in that, as a GM, I grossly underestimate how long adventures/campaigns are going to take. :)

Generally, short games are 4-6 months. :) Just a part of the territory. PbP is an amazing format for many, many reasons, but pure speed is not what it's good at. :)

Handouts button seen. I don't mind ambushing as long as we finish the job. It'll suck if the settlement caught flak for that. I think that a 1:1 trade seems okay. We're not exactly lacking in rations right now, after all.

I've not been applying the coolness under fire rule correctly. Anyone that gets hit or gets shot at with a "6" on the ammo dice needs to make a successful CUF roll or become suppressed. This happens every time it happens. I've only been applying it to the first time a person gets shot at during combat.
I would like to start applying the rule moving forward as long as there aren't any objections.

I asked ForeverDED to reroll one of his attacks in the current encounter because I think it should have had a different modifier. The first roll was a success and the second roll was a failure.
I’m second guessing the ask to reroll because I think it’s frustrating as a a player to reroll when you just rolled a success and I also don’t want it to bog things down by being too strict with the rules; there is a lot to keep track of.

I'm feeling guilty too because I wondered about the dice chain! I forgot all about the fact that the dice could simply start far apart.
That said, I'm fine with re-rolling if I've rolled the wrong die. I do it all the time as a GM, and simply ignore the prior roll and make the correct one.

I think it is frustrating, but at the same time, it's not like rerolling is an unfair ask. I can't speak from experience with other games on this site, because usually the errors in roll adjudication in most other games don't require rerolls. For example, if you rolled 1d20+4 instead of 1d20+7, that can just be adjusted after the roll. Or if you're doing a d6 dice pool and roll 4d6 instead of 2d6, you could just drop the last two dice. Obviously, not as simple with a step die system.

As a side note: did any one of you know about some attempts or existing expansion for Twilight - this edition or the 1st one - with the X-com theme? Setting? Mechanics?

Ok, so I have just ended reading the chapter 2 posts and I'm current with what is happening:) Quite a ride you got there. It is interesting how differently one perceive events in this game comparing to others - as they are more "realistic" and could really happen in our real world... unfortunate y. But I liked very much what I have seen. I think all you style is very aligned to my tastes:)
So.. getting back to the situation. Some time ago I have submitted my sheet, but for now it is still quite empty. Will start to fill it with coming days/hours. But lets go with what I have rolled:

His name is Dawid "Clank" Brzeczyszczykiewicz - "Clank" -> because his last name "Brzęczyszczykiewicz" - and:
1. Probably comes from polish word "brzęczeć" which means more like "buzz"( but also "clank"), and it equivalent in eng. would be something like Clankokiness
2. It is practically unpronounceable for someone that was talking English(or many other languages) for his whole life :) And there is scene in legendary polish comedy film with it: Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz. The movie is How I Unleashed World War II (1970) - IMDb - if someone is interested.
3. I think it would be very "military-like insider joke", when actually Dawid will be good at stealth somehow or for some reason. And I will try to make him that way:)
But please give me some more time to think about those specialities as I think I will adjust them more to the backstory - how we meet or were knowing each other earlier.
So about our connection - I like idea that Jakub knows my character. Because it could make "getting to know each other" for our characters - more natural - Jakub knows me, but you don't... yet. So I will have to earn your trust (what shouldn't be so hard considering Marcin on board... ;P ) and will leave some space for RPing some initial distrust or so? But I don't know if you are in the mood for such themes and RPs right now? We could move with the things without it with no problem for me.
I had also idea that I could have some additional information about USA soliders in the prison/cult captive that would make it higher incentive for the group to go there sooner, then later - to make this decision harder, not necessary change your plans. But this plot interest me:) But of course we can leave it for later. Maybe I could - for some reason - know some way to sneak into the cult HQ or something like that, if you would want to go this way? And Jakub's knowing me could allow us to narratively find some shelter for him(as I'm the native guy around here) for the rescue mission time being...
Regarding cramped space in humvee - I was also thinking about it when I saw you guys took Marcin on board. And I thought that maybe it could be interesting(as it may be not so convenient also) that Dawid will have some kind of motorcycle(nothing fancy, maybe even quite old, but functional) ? So you could meet him on the road but not on foot but riding on the bike, or standing beside it? Maybe it just broke? :) What do you guys think?

Undercover, but without proper and former training? On the side of some operation? But now he lost contact with his "case officer" and when he got back to his home village, to visit his old parents he realized that it was razed to the ground by Soviets (we in Poland generally don't like soviets at all... and communism the brought to us in the effect) or maybe cult members? And now he took his father old Junak Motorcycle and went into the crazy world to find some ways to get revenge?
Also: how do you understand term "Polish Agent" - like a spy ? Secret service or more like actor of events?
So.. getting back to the situation. Some time ago I have submitted my sheet, but for now it is still quite empty. Will start to fill it with coming days/hours. But lets go with what I have rolled:

His name is Dawid "Clank" Brzeczyszczykiewicz - "Clank" -> because his last name "Brzęczyszczykiewicz" - and:
1. Probably comes from polish word "brzęczeć" which means more like "buzz"( but also "clank"), and it equivalent in eng. would be something like Clankokiness
2. It is practically unpronounceable for someone that was talking English(or many other languages) for his whole life :) And there is scene in legendary polish comedy film with it: Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz. The movie is How I Unleashed World War II (1970) - IMDb - if someone is interested.
3. I think it would be very "military-like insider joke", when actually Dawid will be good at stealth somehow or for some reason. And I will try to make him that way:)
But please give me some more time to think about those specialities as I think I will adjust them more to the backstory - how we meet or were knowing each other earlier.
So about our connection - I like idea that Jakub knows my character. Because it could make "getting to know each other" for our characters - more natural - Jakub knows me, but you don't... yet. So I will have to earn your trust (what shouldn't be so hard considering Marcin on board... ;P ) and will leave some space for RPing some initial distrust or so? But I don't know if you are in the mood for such themes and RPs right now? We could move with the things without it with no problem for me.
I had also idea that I could have some additional information about USA soliders in the prison/cult captive that would make it higher incentive for the group to go there sooner, then later - to make this decision harder, not necessary change your plans. But this plot interest me:) But of course we can leave it for later. Maybe I could - for some reason - know some way to sneak into the cult HQ or something like that, if you would want to go this way? And Jakub's knowing me could allow us to narratively find some shelter for him(as I'm the native guy around here) for the rescue mission time being...
Regarding cramped space in humvee - I was also thinking about it when I saw you guys took Marcin on board. And I thought that maybe it could be interesting(as it may be not so convenient also) that Dawid will have some kind of motorcycle(nothing fancy, maybe even quite old, but functional) ? So you could meet him on the road but not on foot but riding on the bike, or standing beside it? Maybe it just broke? :) What do you guys think?
All of this are just my ideas - looking for some feedback from you:)
What I think is more certain(I would like to be a part of his backstory) is that: Dawid worked with USA forces earlier, maybe some secret service cooperation ? Undercover, but without proper and former training? On the side of some operation? But now he lost contact with his "case officer" and when he got back to his home village, to visit his old parents he realized that it was razed to the ground by Soviets (we in Poland generally don't like soviets at all... and communism the brought to us in the effect) or maybe cult members? And now he took his father old Junak Motorcycle and went into the crazy world to find some ways to get revenge?
Also: how do you understand term "Polish Agent" - like a spy ? Secret service or more like actor of events?

But now... he understands why he learned all of this...
Also I love how Musician seems quite useless, but I hope it will make me to think of some creative uses. So I think he has a small violin in his backpack too... probably with a hole from a bullet :)

I'm hoping to get a post in today or tomorrow. Work has been kicking my butt lately, and we got 20 inches of snow in the past 4 days (50.8 cm). I'm going to set Dawid up in the the middle of an encounter that the rest of the group spots.
I like the idea that Dawid has his own smaller vehicle for the moment. - I read Polish Agent as a type of spy. - The INFILTRATOR specialty works.
For weapons and gear, let's have Dawid start out with a pistol of some sort, multiple knives (let's go with 5!), 3 days rations, and 3 days water.

I would like Dawid to have VIS 35 pistol (great polish design, considered by some as one of the best pistol in the world). I based its stats on M9, just bumped Reliability to 6. Would that be ok? I will roll d6 to see how many mags I will have for it - according to Spook starting gear rules. As each mag is only 8 bullets, I will also roll d12 to see how many individual bullets he also have - hopefully that also will be ok? :)

The current situation. Something about a kid riding down the street and recognizing a secret agent makes me think about him watching a spy novels/show in which that secret agent featured.

Dawid had a mission that took him to Eastern Poland, where Soviet influence was prominent. Tasked with sabotaging a military installation, he operated as a lone special operative, recognizing the need for alliances with NATO-friendly locals. Some of these locals, including Jakub's family, became crucial connections. Jakub's father emerged as the lead local conspirator aiding Dawid in his mission. After successfully completing the mission, Dawid had to discreetly depart from the area.
In short, Jakub is the son of a friendly Polish man who was critical in helping Dawid complete a mission. Dawid would know that Jakub is trusted individual.

Besides all my questions/considerations in IC threads, I wonder if we could put Jakub in some safe place for the time of the heli extraction mission and fly back for him on our way out from the area. I think Dawid would certainly be worried about his safety in such "gangers" environment. And it could be easier to play not to have take care about his NPC during some fights. Maybe Dawid could know such a safe place in the area?

Yes, the Helicopter can travel 400km in 1 shift. It uses 20l per 10km (1 hex). It will have roughly 300 liters of fuel.

Yeah. I agree with that: Dawid knowledge about current status of Kraków is certainly smaller than Marcin's. But I was thinking something "before" Krakow - like Dawid's grandparents or friends house at some country side - so we could leave Jakub there in safety and go back for him after Krakow mission. But if other want to take Jakub with us - I have no problem with it at all. The aim was not to have to "handle" this NPC during fights and recon. For convenience sake, but not so important to me at all.

Ok, done. When I ended writing that post I started to think about 2 things:
- maybe we could hide humvee there too? But probably it would be too easy solution?
- Near the place I leave in real word there is a "palace" hidden in the forest: Palace Bagatela that has also some histories during the wars - just leaving it here so maybe it will inspire GM to something:)

Hey everyone, I wanted to let you know that I won't be continuing with this game. I absolutely love being part of the GP community, and it's tough for me to be in a position where I have to suddenly leave a game. It's a pity, as I quite recently have read almost all of your posts, guys... and remember quite vividly how great this game was. Especially because of how our GM handled it with great attention to detail and keeping it all together.
But I completely understand! I'm barely managing to post in my games as player, so I can only imagine how taxing it is to GM one (but I will try to do so in future). Thanks for opportunity to see the system in action and having a short chance to experience it as player! It was great as it lasted! :)

Finding the balance is key! Burnout is real, and only being in a single slow game won't keep you coming back and building muscle around it. Fine line!
