Chapter 3 - Taking flight into uncertainty

"There was something else that my Mom said... my dad remembered a colleague of hers who specialised in animal research, and... my Mom cut him short. There was something there that made her uncomfortable. It was... weird." she adds, remembering the detail.

"I know this guy they meant. He's called Gunnar. I think he also works at Riksenergi. We could go and see him? I'm sure he's in the phone book?"
Sep 16, 2023 7:00 pm
"Do you know his last name? Otherwise the phone book won't be much help," Robbie asks. But then she nods. "That sounds like a really good idea! We can take Freddie to him and if he's an animal researcher, maybe he can tell us all about what was done to Freddie. And then you'll see that he isn't dangerous." Of course Robbie has to admit that it is suspicious that the dog was killed by birds right after scaring away all the pigeons, but she's talked to Freddie a lot since yesterday and he's just a friendly little guy. He and the others like him couldn't do something like that and she is determined to prove it.

"I think I do... Gunnar and Lena... Holm, I think? But they'll be in my parents' phone book. There was something about a holiday they had planned, on my fridge..." she shrugs, with the expression she makes when she is puzzled at the unfathomable world of adults.
Sep 16, 2023 7:19 pm
"Why does your mom have a note about someone else's holiday on your fridge?" Robbie asks. She giggles at the absurdity of that. "Parents are so weird. Right, Emilia?" She turns to the newest (maybe?) member of their little group, trying to include her since she just really wants Emilia to be their friend. "What do you think we should do?"

OOC:
If you decide to look for Gunnar…

The characters don’t have enough information right now to locate him. The skill for finding the right person is Contact, so that’s a skill you’ll need to get a success in.

Attempting the roll means that the character leaves the hideout to get the info. A success means they find good information. A failure will result in the character being put in a troublesome situation that they’ll have to deal with which may or may not get them the correct info.

You can all attempt the check, but since you might not be together to see each other successes, you’ll need to agree before you decide to roll who will attempt the check. You can push or use luck to avoid the trouble only after everyone who said they will attempt the roll makes their roll.

Each character can wait until they hear from another character before they attempt their Contact roll. The only difference here is that they’re choosing to let time pass which slows down your investigation. It might take one character all evening to get the info, so the next character can’t try until the next day for example.

I’ll need to know who is trying to find Gunnar, when, and a rough idea of how they plan on doing it (I’m happy to help with ideas)

OOC:
I'd be up for all of us splitting up to try and look for Gunnar. Either we all find him or we'll get in trouble, either option of which would be fun.

For Robbie, the only thing I can think of for how she might be able to find out about him is to go to her science/biology teacher and ask them about this bird expert.

But after the others mentioned that Freddie might be in danger, Robbie would also want to check up on him as soon as possible.

Emilia does not meet Robbie eyes as she mentions parents being weird. '.. Is it really a good idea to look for him. What are we going to say' We found this bird that been experimented on help?... What if it was him? '

OOC:
it would make story sense if Tanya tried to find an address for Gunnar first, being a friend of her parents
"Well... we could approach Gunnar saying that we think the pigeon is wounded? Or maybe... we could take it to a vet! A vet would not be involved in the experiments, would they? But they might help us figuring out what they did to the bird..."
Sep 17, 2023 10:19 am
"I don't think it was a bird scientist who did this," Robbie says. "That would be a biologist, right? But this isn't a biological thing. The voice sounds like from a machine, so whoever put it into Freddie and the others must be some sort of engineer, right? Although it must be connected to his brain somehow, so maybe you would need to be a bird scientist for this." She looks at Tanya. "Or a vet. Maybe whoever invented this went to a vet and paid them to put the machine into the pigeons."
Sep 18, 2023 12:17 pm
"I don't think you can go to a vet and ask them to insert something inside your pet, you know?"

A thought occurs to Tanya as they discuss. "Do you think a vet would... charge us, to see Freddie? Are they expensive? I'm a little short on pocket money..."
Looking at Robbie, "the animals at your farm... your folks surely have a vet that looks after them, sometimes?"
Sep 18, 2023 12:52 pm
"But you can also not just go to a bird scientist and ask him to insert something in your pet," Robbie argues. She then nods at Tanya's point about a regular vet for their farm animals. "We do have a vet who comes to look at our animals when they get sick or injured," she confirms. "Well, for the pigs and sheep and the big animals at least. For chickens, we usually just slaughter them if something's wrong." She says it rather callously for a thirteen year old girl, but that's just what life on a farm is like. "I bet I can find his number and address in my mom's phonebook."
Sep 18, 2023 1:20 pm
OOC:
Finding the Vet is much easier than finding Gunnar. If you choose that option, you will atomically find their number. No roll required.
Sep 18, 2023 5:50 pm
OOC:
We can probably split up. Robbie heads to the farm to get the vet's number/address, Tanya heads to her home to maybe find the contact info for Gunnar, and Emilia can tag along with either or do her own thing. Robbie also definitely wants to check on Freddie.

OOC:
I like to check in at least once a day. Sounds like you're all leaning towards splitting up.

- Robbie will go to farm to check on Freddie and then get the vet's number/address.
- Tanya will head home and find the contact info for Gunnar.

We haven't heard what Emilia plans on doing but she could either accompany one of the others or make her own plan. If we don't hear from @LightOfMidnight, I would assume Emilia does her own thing. I think her default is that she heads back home. However, I'm happy to backfill Emilia's encounter if you had another idea Midnight.

Tanya parts way from the others and walks home, to the small bungalow by the lake where she and her family live.

Her first port of call will be her parents' phone book to look for Gunnar or Lena's surname/address. Failing that, the regular phone book if she has remembered or read their surname. Only as a last resort (due to the request backfiring the night before) will she involve her parents directly. Mom seemed the most reticent, so she will try not to mention this to her.
OOC:
leaving a Contact roll, can I pitch use of her Notebook to jot down what she finds out ? rolling separately in case it doesn't apply

OOC:
I'll make a post when I get home this evening. But maybe Tanya wants to push since I think getting the number might be useful. She might feel Insecure about asking her mom.
Sep 19, 2023 3:17 pm
OOC:
Sorry was birthday yesterday. Emilia will tag along if someone offers... Otherwise she might follow Robbie out of concern of a 'killer bird'
Sep 19, 2023 3:53 pm
OOC:
Your birthday?

I have an idea for a post. Will include Emilia
Sep 19, 2023 4:26 pm
OOC:
sure thing, good spot to push
Tanya gets frustrated and upset at not finding the info on Gunnar's surname and address that she had hoped to find. Her parents are annoyingly often talking about Gunnar and Lena, yet their details are nowhere to be found! She is really annoyed at them, and at herself for not thinking some other way to get the info.

She resorts to asking her dad after he's off his driving shift. "Er... Dad? Wasn't there a funny pun you and Mom came up with, on Gunnar's surname? What was it again?", she asks as innocently as possible, her notebook at the ready behind her back to annotate the coveted info.
OOC:
It is a trick question, hoping to elicit the response: there's no pun in his name, it's a boring old one: Gunnar XYZ
Gaining the Upset condition to reroll.

happy birthday, @LightOfMidnight !

Happy birthday @LightOfMidnight! I know that we always write a little bit of ourselves in our stories, so based on Emilia I want to celebrate the things I imagine are true about you!

- You cook a phenomenal pot of pasta for your mum.
- You’re amazing at distracting talking pigeons with mirrors.
- We can always rely on you to stop a bully by covering them with dirt and worms.
