Hilmir Enters The Wood

Hilmir sets off early in the morning. He knows it is best to get as far as possible before evening falls. Although he maintained an excellent pace for a while, as the day dragged along his body started to do the same.

While navigating a particularly rigorous passage, where the canopy was so thick that he could barely see, Hilmir stumbled over a rock and narrowly avoided hurting himself badly. Noticing a small clearing nearby, he accepted that it was time to rest. The stars look so different out here, he thought as he looked upon constellations he swore he'd never seen before.

Hilmir was woken up by angry tones in a language he didn’t recognize, and realized that four brown-colored frogmen had snuck into his makeshift camp. The closest one brandished a spear menacingly, while the three behind him cowered in fear holding large rocks. They were chattering amongst themselves.
[ +- ] Frogmen
He’d never seen such creatures before. About 3’ tall and clearly quite stealthy to have made it so close before being heard. Their discussion halts abruptly when they notice Hilmir start to move. Almost in unison, they hop back a few steps and hold nervous poses while staring in his direction.
OOC:
Your adventure begins! Feel free to ask any clarifying questions if you'd like @SpiritualSock511.
EDIT: My bad, accidentally posted this first with Hilmir's name spelled wrong.
Sep 21, 2023 1:14 pm
Hilmir stares in silence trying to register the scene. He takes a moment to shake off the remnants of sleep, blinking as the drowsiness fades. With a languid stretch and a series of casual scratches, he gradually shifts into a sitting position. His movements are unhurried and give the impression that he's more perplexed than alarmed by the presence of the Frogmen.

Once fully seated, Hilmir addresses them in a groggy but composed manner, "Well, what's the plan?" He pauses briefly to stifle a yawn, then continues, "Are we going for the 'kill me and take my stuff' route? That seems like more trouble than either of us would want. In any case... social customs dictate hospitality to guests. This, my friends... or should I say, my froggy companions, is my camp, and no one, um... no Frog... will ever say Hilmir is inhospitable."

He pats himself down, searching for any food. Assuming he has something, he takes a bite and swallows. Then, extending his arm out towards the Frogmen, he offers them the remaining portion as a gesture of goodwill.
OOC:
Hilmir would take inventory of the reachable items near him as he pats himself and looks for food. He's aware that the situation could turn bad, but he's tired and doesn't want to have to deal with it right now.

- Is he by a fire?
- (If need be) would he be able to grab his spear, sword, shield, or burning stick from a fire to defend himself?
- What time of day did he wake up?

OOC:
The rest of his items are close by, but immediately reachable are his spear, horn, and axe (didn't see a sword in your inventory sheet but we can switch the axe for one if you like).

No fire in the immediate vicinity, there are a few large sticks though.

It is early morning but the sun is up and has already dissipated any fog.
The one in front looks at the food, then Hilmir, and places the spear at their side. It nods, accepts a bite, and barks a short command.

A nervous looking frogman hurries beside Hilmir and opens up a small satchel full of various grubs and insects. There are some he's never seen before, but a few he recognizes as safe for consumption.

The other frogmen begin a heated debate, and keep gesturing towards Hilmir. He gets the impression that two are talking about how big and strong he looks, while the apparent leader is trying to get them to settle down.
Sep 21, 2023 9:47 pm
OOC:
Oops, he indeed has an axe. I think my brain defaults to sword whenever I think of a weapon.
Hilmir looks into the satchel and mutters to himself with a hint of frustration, "No one will ever say that Hilmir is inhospitable." He reaches into the bag and retrieves one of the insects he knows to be safe for consumption.

Maintaining a friendly demeanor, he holds up the insect and says, "Guten Appetit," meaning good meal in his native tongue, and he eats it.

Fully aware that the Frogmen do not seem to understand his language, he persists in conversation. "Now that we've handled the pleasantries, let's get down to business. Your friends seem a bit unsure about me, and I can't blame them. However, here we are. Is there something I can assist you with?"

He slowly goes through a series of pantomines to try and guess the Frogman’s intent. First pointing to his spear and then to the surrounding wilderness. Next, he points to his food and then to the Frogmen. Finally, he points to himself and the wilderness once more. Each time, he pauses, holding up his hands to signal it's a question. He’s hoping to elicit any meaningful response.

The Frogmen carefully watch Hilmir’s actions, and clap when he points to himself and the wilderness.

They deliberate shortly, then the leader walks over to one of the large rocks their compatriots were holding and places it on the ground. They proceed to do this a few times, making a small pile.

The leader then points to Hilmir, and makes an exaggerated motion highlighting how much larger he is than the Frogman. Lastly, the leader points to the rocks carried, and makes the same exaggerated motion, indicating a larger size.
Sep 22, 2023 1:02 pm
Hilmir takes a moment to process the rock scene, then clasps his hands together and says, "Yes, I will do this for you." He points to himself, followed by an exaggerated motion of lifting one of the rocks and tossing it aside. "You want me to move something, yes?"

He watches for a sign of confirmation. Assuming they confirm this (or even if they don't. He knows it has something to do with him and leaving), he begins collecting his belongings and rolling up his bedroll. While doing so, he continues talking, saying, "You know, I'm often asked to help move things. There was this one time..." He launches into a story about moving a barrel of apples for a lady.

Midway through his story, Hilmir suddenly realizes something and stops. "My manners! We haven't formally introduced ourselves." Bending down to be at eye level with the Frogman leader, he looks directly at the leader and says, "Well, I'm not sure how this will work, but my name is Hilmir... Me, Hilmir," he says, tapping his chest. Afterward, he points to the head Frogman and raises his hands in a questioning gesture.

After introductions and assuming that Hilmir doesn’t sense any danger, he would signal for the Frogmen to lead the way.

OOC:
I and Hilmir may be misinterpreting the situation, and I'm more than happy to go back and make updates post-facto. I like to write out what I think will happen to telegraph my actions. Hilmir would for example still introduce himself even if the Frogmen clarify the rocks or do something surprising.
Sep 22, 2023 7:03 pm
After Hilmir’s pantomime, the group gets very animated and exchange excited whispers.

They listen carefully to his apple barrel story, but it is clear that they don’t understand the actual words, just the overall vibe of what Hilmir was communicating.

When the introduction occurs, the leader’s demeanor becomes much more formal. They look at Hilmir and say, "Me… Korban." and tap their chest in a similar manner. Then, gesturing towards the others: "kolosa". Hilmir gets the impression that Korban is saying they’re family, possibly even siblings.

The Frogmen led Hilmir through the woods down several winding paths. It gets steep for so long that he swears they are trudging him up the side of a mountain… but The Absent Wood isn’t attached to any ranges so that doesn’t make sense...

The trek is starting to get difficult. If you want to keep going, you’ll need to roll a STR save. Roll under or equal to your STR stat, you get to the destination a bit tired but alright. If you roll over your STR stat, you get there but take 1 Fatigue.
OOC:
You and Hilmir interpreted perfectly, and I’ll keep that in mind RE telegraphing intentions. Hilmir's personality is really shining through and that's awesome to see.

I don't want the players to feel boxed in to a certain actions so when it comes to the purple text above, or any actions pitched like that at any point in the game, feel free to suggest an alternate course of action.

Hilmir forges ahead, determined to demonstrate both his physical prowess and his commitment to not inconveniencing his newfound companions.

Sep 23, 2023 1:56 am
The grub he ate must have given him a little bit of extra grit, because Hilmir makes it up to the plateau without breaking stride.

There appears to have been a rockslide recently, with several boulders of all sizes blocking a well-trodden path. It appears to lead up to some kind of lookout point above. Hilmir is a bit confused though, he didn't think there was anything at this kind of elevation in The Absent Grove.

The Frogmen point to the boulders and show that their attempts to go over or around just result in more debris filling up the path. They can handle the smaller ones, but there are several large ones in the middle they would never have a shot at.

If you want to move the larger rocks, roll 2 STR saves. If they both succeed, Hilmir clears the major obstacles from the pathway and takes 1 Fatigue. If one succeeds and one fails, Hilmir clears the path and takes 2 Fatigue. If both fail, Hilmir still clears the path but hurts his back a little in the process (nothing permanent or major, but it would be factored into how difficult things may be for the rest of the day).
Sep 23, 2023 12:54 pm
Hilmir takes a moment to survey the scene, nodding in acknowledgment. "Indeed, this is quite a problem," he remarks with a tone of determination in his voice. He rolls up his sleeves and sets to work.

As he moves the rocks and major obstacles, he is mindful not to dislodge them in a way that might create more obstacles. He occasionally consults with Korban, seeking advice on the best approach for handling particularly tricky situations.

Korban shows Hilmir a stance that helps keep him steady on uneven footing, which proves extremely effective. Hilmir doesn't only clear the obstacles, but manages to use the largest rocks to build a bulwark that will keep the path clear when the next rockslide occurs. The Frogmen are extremely impressed by this feat, and appear to be celebrating Hilmir's strength, flexing and cheering.
OOC:
On 1s/20s something extra will happen. 1s will result in some extra benefit (in this case you gained the full trust and admiration of these Frogmen). 20s will result in some extra hindrance or complication, but death will only be on the table if mortal risk is telegraphed before the player decides to take a roll.
Krogan takes Hilmir aside, places their hand across their chest and bows. This appears to be a gesture of their deep appreciation for the assistance offered. The Frogman then points to the freshly cleared path, and beckons Hilmir to follow him up.
OOC:
I’m going to assume Hilmir follows him up, in that case read this. If not let me know what you’d like Hilmir to do.
[ +- ] Hilmir follows Krogan up the path
Sep 24, 2023 1:41 pm
Hilmir basks in the praise from the Frogmen, unable to stop himself from savoring the admiration for a moment longer than most would deem appropriate. In response to Korban's appreciative gesture, he returns the respect with a deep, respectful bow.

He follows Korban's lead up the path and his eyes widen at the view of the vast valley below.

He acknowledges Korban’s warning with sincerity and says, "Your caution is well-received, and I am deeply grateful, friend." As he contemplates this warning, other thoughts begin to come to his mind. Looking to Korban with a furrowed brow, he then admits, "I do not wish to trouble you, Korban, but it appears I am quite lost. I find myself in need of your guidance. Where should I venture from here?"

Hilmir points to himself, then sweeps his arm in a circle to convey his sense of being disoriented. With purpose, he retrieves a nearby stick and proceeds to sketch a rudimentary map in the dirt. It depicts the valley and the perilous area Korban had warned about. He points to himself and then to the map.
OOC:
Based on Hilmir's past, I believe his chief concerns would suddenly become safety and food. He's not a stranger to travel, and he would have a keen sense of what being lost can do to a person.

If possible, he would pick up 1 or 2 tennis-ball sized stones from the rockslide if he had noticed them earlier. He would only pick up the rocks if it took no longer than a couple of minutes.

The rocks, he thinks, could be used as an extra projectile weapon, or they could possibly be used to start a campfire.
Sep 24, 2023 4:48 pm
Korban thinks for a moment, points to Hilmir, and then uses the stick to point to the south-west corner of the "map". The valley being in the middle, and their current position the north-west.

Korban then uses the stick to point to the south-east corner (on the other side of the valley), and draws an ‘X’. Their face turns gravely serious. That region is dangerous.

They give Hilmir the opportunity to ask any other questions about the map, and then brush it away. Krogan does the appreciation gesture once more, and chirps and order to the rest of the group.

The other Frogmen scurry over, with handfuls of pedals from a flower that grows abundantly on this mountain. Most is dumped into a satchel, but one of them comes over and presents his gatherings to Hilmir and Krogan. Krogan pops one in his mouth and chews enthusiastically, the rest appear to be a gift for Hilmir.

The pedals would take up one slot. Hilmir is being presented with about two days worth, and he gets the impression they wouldn’t last longer than that.
OOC:
Based on what he's seen so far, Hilmir would be confident that he'd be able to forage well, but coming across meat seems like more of a challenge. He's seen some creatures resembling squirrels and rabbits though.

Regarding the rocks you’re good to add those to the character sheet if you haven’t already, given the size described I’d say the pair would take up 1 slot.

OOC:
Added to Inventory
+ Pair of tennis ball sized stones.
+ Two days pedal rations
Hilmir gratefully accepts the gift, his expression reflecting sincere appreciation for Korban and his Kolosa's kindness. As the realization dawns that their time together is drawing to a close, he turns to Korban and speaks, "Korban, I'd like to leave you with a parting gesture."

With a sense of nostalgia, he retrieves his horn. "This is Hilmir's call," he explains, his voice filled with warmth. "I used to use this when hunting with my father. If you ever see me in this valley and need more rocks moved, you give me a shout, yes?"

He proceeds to demonstrate the call to Korban, though he keeps it quiet to avoid drawing unwanted attention. The horn call uses this pattern: short, long, short, long, a pause, and then a series of three long notes.

Hilmir then gathers his things and with a final thanks and goodbye, he heads south-west.
Sep 25, 2023 4:51 pm
Korban pays close attention to the demonstration and performs the call once softly, using their hand as a makeshift instrument. The time together has been short, but Hilmir can tell Korban feels a true bond.

Korban joins the rest of the frogmen, and the group look to Hilmir one last time and make the appreciation gesture in unison. It is only a moment before a command is chirped, and they heads into the trees to the north.

Hilmir’s travels go smoothly, this area of the wood seems quite peaceful. Once it gets to the early afternoon, he comes across two sturdy clotheslines around a nice looking area where others have set up camp before. They appear to have left behind a heavily dented but perfectly useable pot, and some interesting water canteens made out of large gourds. Thus far, Hilmir has not heard anyone else in the area, only some small animals. The firepit is long cold.

Can I get a quick update on inventory and food rules?

Inventory: Is it 6 inventory items on my person and 6 in the backpack?

Food: Is it we need food and water once per day, just food, or something different?
Sep 25, 2023 6:23 pm
OOC:

I don't want us get bogged down in managing water and food too much, and the book is vague, so how do you feel about this?

If you're traveling through the woods at a normal pace, it's assumed that you're foraging/eating as you go. This is enough to keep you from going deprived, and doesn't take up any slots.

We can call more direct travel a march, and that action will come with the assumption that you're not foraging and instead need to eat from your rations that day or become deprived.

If you're not traveling, but near the woods for at least a few hours that day, it's assumed you've foraged enough for the day in that time.

Foraging extra will take a couple hours and provide perishable rations (like those pedals). Perishable rations are only good for two days unless preserved somehow, then they're converted into standard rations (which don't go bad).

If you want to get meat we can come up with some rolls for hunting/traps/fishing etc, and go from there.

As for water, let's just say filling your waterskin or equivalent item is counted under standard foraging.

How does that work for you?

OOC:
Sorry somehow skipped over this entirely. The inventory is supposed to be a total of 10 slots: a backpack with six slots, one slot for each hand, and two slots for their upper body (such as the belt, chest, or head).

If you max yourself out at 10, your HP drops to 0 and you become much easier to hit so you want to try to stay at 9 or lower. Also, if you take fatigue without any slots available, something must be dropped.
Sep 26, 2023 1:35 pm
OOC:
Thanks! The food rules make sense and more importantly seem very manageable. - It looks like Hilmir should grab one of the water canteens. Since he already has 9 items, he would need to drop something to keep his HP above 0. Do I understand that correctly?

Inventory
Upper Body: Helmet, Axe on Belt
Left Hand: Shield
Right Hand: Ash Wood Spear

BACKPACK (6 Slots):
Item 1: Horn
Item 2: Bedroll
Item 3: Idunn's Flask
Item 4: 2 days pedal rations
Item 5 pair of tennis ball sized stones
Entering the campsite, Hilmir says "Hello, I am here. I do not wish to surprise you." Not hearing a response, he would inspect the camp further.
OOC:
1. Does he see any indication of who was at this campsite and why they left? (i.e. Does it look like many were here. Does it look like they left in a hurry?)
2. What do the water canteens look like and how reliable do the seem?

OOC:
Correct, that's it exactly. You can still move at 0HP so you're not immobilized or anything, but can't avoid being hit.
Hilmir hears no response to his call. Looking around a bit more he notices some kindling prepared in a little pile near the firepit, but no other items other than the pot and canteens.
SpiritualSock511 says:

He notices a few sets of footprints, doesn't look like anyone left in any kind of hurry though. At least three, hard to say for sure if more.

The canteens look fairly reliable, they are simple in design but appear solid and whole. If placed into his pack, Hilmir doesn't think it would leak.

Hilmir continues in the same direction for a bit longer, and can't quite shake the feeling that he is being followed. Occasionally he thinks he catches a glance of a dark shape, but always on the edge of his peripheral vision.
Sep 27, 2023 12:01 pm
As he walks, Hilmir's steps become more deliberate, and he subtly slows his pace. His senses are on high alert. His weathered face shows concentration as he listens intently to the forest's sounds, filtering for any irregularities.

He begins to grip his spear tightly, ready to thrust it if needed, but for now, he remains focused on his surroundings, determined to confirm or dispel the feeling that someone is trailing him.
Sep 27, 2023 4:45 pm
As Hilmir scans the area, he suddenly hones in on the outline of a man about 150ft away. He is blending in seamlessly against one of the trees, in a wardrobe that perfectly matches the colors of the area.

Let's do a DEX save, if you succeed he doesn't realize that you have spotted him. If you fail, you still see him but he realizes he's been seen.
Sep 27, 2023 6:52 pm
Hilmir makes a noticeable change in his path, his footsteps betraying his intent as he seeks a clearer vantage point to discern the concealed figure. His movements, although calculated, seem to announce his actions rather than maintain stealth.

Then, he puts both of his hands up and takes a few slow steps towards Hilmir before speaking.

"I'm not looking for a fight, but need to make sure you aren't either."
Sep 28, 2023 1:26 pm
Hilmir maintains a firm stance, spear in hand but not raised in aggression.

"Hello, stranger. I believe neither of us desires a fight today. Do you often trail others from the shadows? Such a tactic might incite more fighting than prevent it"
Sep 28, 2023 3:08 pm
"I am a scout. I don't believe you realize it, but you are strolling towards my community." He walks closer to Hilmir, both to get a better look at him, and so he can speak more quietly.

"Anyone who enters these parts must abide by a few simple rules. If you're not interested in that, I can point you in another direction."
Sep 28, 2023 4:45 pm
"Ah indeed. It is customary to honor the rules of one's host. Hilmir has always been known for his graciousness as a guest. I shall certainly abide by your rules, as long as they remain fair and reasonable."
Sep 29, 2023 2:43 am
He walks towards Hilmir at a casual pace, while reciting the rules. "Number 1: Disagreements are settled with debate, or settled elsewhere. Number 2: Other than The Exchange, there is to be no gathering in groups greater than four. Number 3: Those who sympathize with The Order, or their cause, are not welcome."

He stops walking, and extends his palms towards Hilmir as if presenting him with an offering. "Any questions?"
Sep 29, 2023 1:06 pm
"Yes, these seem very manageable. I agree to them. However, could you explain what it is you mean by ‘The Exchange’ and ‘The Order?’ These words don’t have meaning to me."
Sep 29, 2023 4:44 pm
He tilts his head to the side for a moment, taking a minute to decide exactly how to respond. "The Order is a cult of fanatics that seek nothing but control over others."

"As for The Exchange, why don't I show you. You said your name is Hilmir, right? I am Deacon." He starts walking to the south, and says "It's about an hour from here, on the way let's hear about some of your travels."
Sep 29, 2023 9:03 pm
"Indeed it is," Hilmir responds with a warm smile. "I am Hilmir, and it's a pleasure to meet you, Deacon."
Hilmir walks alongside Deacon, amicably accepting his request to share tales of his travels. He begins by recounting a few anecdotes, all of which cast him in a favorable light, highlighting his skill in safeguarding caravans. However, as he delves into a longer story, his enthusiasm becomes palpable.

"There was this one time," Hilmir begins, his voice brimming with animation, "when a lady asked me to move a rather sizable barrel of apples..." He launches into the story, much like he did earlier with Korban, but this time his storytelling is infused with even greater vivacity. "...and then, some of the apples rolled right into the road!" Hilmir's hearty laughter punctuates the tale…
Sep 30, 2023 1:15 am
Deacon listens attentively to the stories, and seems to relate quite a bit to that sort of work. He is quieter than Hilmir though, not the talkative sort. Seems to prefer observing and listening. With the apple barrel one though, he bursts into laughter right along with Hilmir.

As they round a path, Hilmir begins to hear other voices. They enter a clearing and see several other individuals standing around a large rock. They seem fairly familiar with each other.

https://i.imgur.com/DIBkiXE.jpg

Deacon leans in to Hilmir and explains, "This is The Exchange. It's a sort of auction. Someone places an item at one end, and the others make their offers for an exchange. No money is to change hands, or any agreements for work. Purely items for items, all resolved on the slab."

A middle-aged gentleman starts, and placed a handsaw onto the slab and states, "handsaw". In response, a woman on the other side places a vial down, "antitoxin". Another man looks like he is about to place something up, but changes his mind and raises his fist to the side of his head. The others make the same gesture. It appears to indicate "pass".

The middle-aged gentleman on the 'seller's' side looks over to Deacon and Hilmir. Deacon makes the pass sign, then looks to see how Hilmir responds.

You can participate in The Exchange if you wish, but there is no pressure to do so. It seems to be as much an auction as it is a moment of socialization, where other 'scouts' like Deacon catch up on recent sightings.
OOC:
What sort of items would Hilmir keep an eye out for? Is there anything he'd want to put up onto the slab to see if there are buyers? Is he listening for anything while the scouts catch each other up? Anything Hilmir would ask or say to the group?
Oct 1, 2023 12:38 am
OOC:
Hilmir, being a sociable individual and knows info is critical for safe travels would direct his attention more toward the conversations of others. However, he would only choose to approach a group if he sees that they are engaged in a cheerful discussion or if prompted by Deacon's lead.

When it comes to exchanging goods, his interest lie primarily in objects related to travel and weaponry. Its unlikely he would engage in the exchange since he already possesses an axe, spear, helmet, and shield.
Oct 1, 2023 2:51 am
Deacon walks over to the slab and exchanges a few short pleasantries, before introducing Hilmir as a "Newcomer to the wood". They are polite but not especially forthcoming, and some appear a bit taken aback by Hilmir's warm demeanor. The Exchange proceeds with fairly mundane items, except for a few that caught Hilmir's eye:

The items placed on the slab for The Exchange that would be most interesting to Hilmir are a cracked spyglass, pitons, and caltrops (the last item is placed by Deacon).
OOC:
If you're interested in bidding on any of those items let me know, otherwise we'll just assume that Hilmir politely passed.
From the conversation Hilmir picks up that agents of "The Order", derogatorily called "Robes", patrol these woods disrupting any camp sites or gatherings they come upon. The people participating in The Exchange are a loosely connected collective that works to evade The Order by trying not to stay in any one spot for too long, and exchanging information about the routes commonly patrolled.

As The Exchange wraps up, Deacon lets Hilmir know that he must return to his post, but would be happy to point him towards safe pathways depending on where he is headed next.
OOC:
If there's anything Hilmir would like to ask those at The Exchange, or Deacon privately, he's welcome to take the opportunity now. Otherwise, it is getting to be the late afternoon and Hilmir will need to figure out what he is doing from here.
Oct 1, 2023 9:45 pm
As Hilmir interacts with the people around him, he begins to notice their surprised reactions to his demeanor. He interprets it as possibly unintentionally breaking some unspoken social custom of this unfamiliar setting. Determined to put others at ease, he gradually adjusts his own demeanor to align more closely with the local customs and expectations.

Among the items presented for exchange, Hilmir gives the eyeglass a thoughtful look but ultimately decides to pass on it. He declines the remaining items offered in the exchange.

As Deacon prepares to part ways, Hilmir takes a moment to inquire about the best place to spend the night, given that it’s late in the afternoon and he hasn’t thought about his next steps.

He says "The last time I slept here I was awoken by frogmen." Then adding with a hint of concern, "I might not be so fortunate next time."
Oct 2, 2023 12:14 am
"The Frogmen are good friends to have in this wood," he comments. "Most creatures won’t be able to sneak up so easily. The biggest thing to worry about in these parts are Sweepers, and you’ll hear one of those coming a mile away."

Seeing Hilmir’s reaction to an unfamiliar term, Deacon expands. "The Order have control over large automatons called Sweepers. They destroy anything in their path and are not subtle about it. As long as you stay off the main routes, you’d hear them way before they ever got close."

He takes a step towards Hilmir and points to the south-east. "Go that way a bit over an hour and you’ll come across a quiet stream. The Order doesn’t usually patrol that way." Deacon pauses, as if he’s not quite sure how to say the next part.

"Hilmir, I don’t know what circumstances brought you here, but I must tell you something before you go. These woods are not what you think they are." Deacon moves in close and speaks quietly. "Lots of theories. It’s a trial. It’s a test. It’s hell. The only thing they all have in common is the only thing we know for sure: these woods can't be left."

He takes a few steps back, and points to the west. "Walk for two days in that direction, …" then, pointing to the north-east, "...and come out on that side."

"I don’t know how long I’ve been here… but it’s been years since I stopped looking for a way out." He stares at the ground a moment in silence before looking up at Hilmir. "Do you understand what I am trying to tell you?"

Hilmir nods in agreement as he listens to Deacon's information. In reality, he doesn't fully grasp the significance of terms like "sweepers," "automatons," or "the order," and he’s too proud to admit it. However, when Deacon mentions the impossibility of leaving the woods, Hilmir interprets it as a metaphor, and a solemn expression crosses his face, indicating his understanding of the seriousness of being lost in the woods.

Once the conversation with Deacon concludes, Hilmir expresses heartfelt gratitude and proceeds to follow the direction Deacon pointed out.

Travelling to the south-east goes well, it is a quiet route just as Deacon said it would be. When he passes through some darker areas, Hilmir notices that one of the flowers emits a soft aqua colored glow in the absence of light.

He gets to the stream and finds a good spot for a small camp. There are animals in the area, some squirrels and birds, but Hilmir doesn't notice anything much bigger than that. He figures there's about three hours of light left in the day.

As he passes through the darker areas, he takes notice of the soft aqua-colored glow emitted by one of the flowers.

Upon reaching the stream, Hilmir decides to locate a suitable spot to set up a small camp. Observing the presence of smaller wildlife such as squirrels and birds in the vicinity, he assumes that the area seems relatively safe from larger predators. Aware that there are approximately three hours of daylight remaining, Hilmir takes the opportunity to prepare for the night, gather firewood, and ensure his camp is secure.

While he is gathering firewood, Hilmir hears movement in the brush about twenty paces ahead. It sounds larger than the small animals he's seen thus far, but Hilmir would need to move closer if he wanted to inspect properly.

If Hilmir wants to investigate the area he heard the noise, please roll a DEX and WIL save. Successes/Failures would impact how close whatever it is would be able to get to Hilmir before he notices, if whatever it is decides to do so. Otherwise he can go back to the campsite, or take any other action he'd like.

Recalling Deacon's assurance that the only substantial threats were these mysterious sweepers, Hilmir feels somewhat at ease as he investigates the source of the sound. Drawing from his previous experiences with Korban and Deacon, who had initially approached him stealthily, he hopes that this encounter will be similarly friendly. He makes a mental note to inquire with the next person he meets about the local customs, particularly regarding the practice of hiding before introducing oneself, as it strikes him as rather unusual.

"Hallo?!" Hilmir calls out as he follows the noise. "No need to hide. I have a bag of pedals to share. They might be an acquired taste, but they're not too bad."

Oct 4, 2023 10:07 pm
A slim pale young woman with shoulder-length black hair rises up from the low brush and tires to brush herself off. She is wearing a dark hooded cloak over fairly nice clothing. She steadies herself with a shovel; holding it like a staff with the butt against the ground.

"Oh..don't mind me. Just passing through." She replies to the older man.
Oct 4, 2023 10:40 pm
Hilmir remains completely unfazed by the sudden appearance of the young woman, greeting her with an exuberant grin. "Haha, yes, welcome!" he exclaims with enthusiasm. "It seems to be the custom in these parts to hide before making new friends, is it not? This is my camp, and you needn't worry about my hospitality. Please, come. I'm gathering wood for a fire, and I have an abundance of pedals from the frogmen to share."

As he speaks, Hilmir gestures warmly and begins to prepare the campsite. When he mentions terms like "frogmen" and "pedals," he assumes that these are common knowledge and wouldn’t notice if her look becomes puzzled.

Hilmir, a man in his mid-50s, stands tall and imposing with a rugged appearance that reflects a life spent outdoors. His weathered skin bears the marks of countless days under the sun, and his greying hair is adorned with speckles and streaks of black. Despite his imposing presence, his demeanor radiates warmth and openness.
Oct 4, 2023 11:45 pm
Another woman with dark hair, a bit older than the pale one, steps out from the same area. She is wearing a leather shirt, and is carrying a satchel.

"Didn't mean to sneak up on ya, not a lot of friends in these woods. We're just passing by... wait did you say frogmen?" She looks Hilmir up and down quizzically. "You know some frogmen? Mister....?" she gestures towards Hilmir with sort of a one-handed shrug.

Oct 5, 2023 1:35 am
"Another one?" Hilmir raises an eyebrow. "How many more of you are wandering about?" He adds with a brief pause, "I do know some frogmen, yes. I consider Korban and his Kolasa good friends. They are fine folks... or fine frogs, I should say. Quite hospitable, those ones."
Oct 5, 2023 8:46 am
"Perhaps another time?" Dreli replies. "We need to be on and make it to our destination before nightfall. I hope you can understand"
Oct 5, 2023 1:06 pm
A look of disappointment creases Hilmir's face as he observes the woman's intention to depart. "Oh, I will not keep you," he says.

However, just as they begin to move away, Hilmir's tone shifts, and he quickly interjects, his voice carrying a touch of hope. "Wait, wait! I, um, would you like some company? I am lost in these woods and would greatly appreciate some conversation. I am skilled at guarding caravans and would be more than willing to offer my services to ensure our mutual safety."
Oct 5, 2023 5:31 pm
Elara looks at the ground for a moment, before shrugging to herself as a signal that she had resolved some internal debate. "You don't act like anyone with The Order, and if you have an in with some frogmen I know someone who wants to chat. I'm Elara, this is Dreli."

"It's a bit over an hour from here, and we'll ensure you have a safe area to rest the night. Assuming you're willing to talk to Dani that is... She's in charge of a small group around here." Elara moves closer to Hilmir, and darkens the tone of her voice dramatically, "Crossing her would be a bad idea."

Elara would engage in some casual conversation on the way, partly feeling the pair of you out but also because she's a chatty person overall. In each of your next replies, please include your character's answer to the question "How much experience do you have in the woods?", and up to two questions they would ask Elara.

Oct 6, 2023 9:35 pm
Dreli follows Elara's lead toward the camp of Dani, where ever that may be. She had played and explored into the woods near her home somewhat growing up, but these weren't those. She was sure of that. Dreli was anxious to reach their destination, having been wandering in the woods now for quite some time.

Sorry. The questions threw me for a loop and I still haven't come up with questions for our guide.

OOC:
Ah sorry about that, I just wanted to give the opportunity to ask something if anyone wanted to. Don't feel forced into it (or any purple text) if your character would proceed differently.
Oct 6, 2023 10:08 pm
Hilmir doesn't directly address her question about his experience in the woods, instead focusing on his broader skills.

With a hint of pride in his voice, he responds, "I have spent many years on the roads and paths, guarding caravans, and making camp in the great outdoors. The ways of the road, the art of guarding, and the secrets of a good campfire are my specialties."

He wouldn’t ask any specific questions, but would ask questions about Elara or things she’s interested in to keep the conversation pleasant.
OOC:
He doesn’t have skill in the woods in the way a ranger or woodsman would, so he’ll try and steer the conversation away from highlighting that.
Oct 7, 2023 12:42 am
Elara doesn't pry much, and mostly talks about plants that are unique to the area. She describes an ivy you'll definitely want to stay away from, as well as an edible weed that grows plentifully where the wood is less dense, closer to the valley.

About an hour in, Elara suddenly stops and gestures for them all to get low. She whispers "Up ahead there is the camp, but sounds like something this up."

They move a bit closer and hear a woman talking to someone in a dark red robe. "Took me days to build this hut, how much for you to keep moving?" She sounds like she's made these sorts of offers before. She is tall, and somewhat broad, with blonde hair.

"Been letting too many slide around here lately," the robed figure answers. "Folks been getting too comfortable. Examples need to be made."

Elara moves behind a large tree to the side, and motions the two of you to follow. From here, you can no longer hear details of the conversation, just the overall tone, but they also won't be able to hear you. Elara keeps to a whisper, but speaks with urgency. "That's Dani talking to the fella from The Order," She wipes some sweat from her brow and continues. "There's usually at least two, but I haven't spotted the other one yet."
OOC:
This can be approached however you'd like. Feel free to be creative, if you pitch something complex it may just require a few different rolls. The only things you can't try are things your character truly couldn't possibly do, and if that's the case I'll let you know. As always, let me know if you need any clarification on anything. Remember, the robed figure likely has at least one partner nearby.
Oct 7, 2023 12:42 pm
OOC:
The Order seem to be the bad guys, so I'm thinking we'll want to assist Dani, right? Hilmir's got a WIT of 3, so he's not going to be able to do anything clever. Maybe Dreli would want to distract or search for the other? I don't know her backstory to say if she would even want to help.

Hilmir could stand guard by the tree, knock out the man from the order we currently see, or approach him and try to intimidate. @RageRed, thoughts?
Oct 8, 2023 12:47 am
OOC:
@SpiritualSocket, Dreli would attempt to locate the other one using her WITs. She doesn't much trust anyone or anything in this add forest she doesn't remember entering.
Oct 8, 2023 12:56 am
In a hushed tone, Hilmir addresses Elara "You mentioned there are usually two of these men, and they seem to bring trouble. What do you think this man might do to your friend?" He pauses briefly before continuing in a quieter mutter to himself, "We'll need to locate the other one."

Hilmir then shifts his attention to his surroundings, scanning the area carefully for any signs or clues that might lead them to the missing member of The Order.
Oct 8, 2023 2:29 am
Elara shakes her head and shrugs, "Usually they take a bribe, sometimes they beat ya, occasionally they kidnap people and try to brainwash 'em into joining their cause."
OOC:
The other one isn't hiding (they are under the impression that Dani is alone), so let's say that Dreli spots them while looking around and she points the second figure out to Hilmir and Elara.

To illustrate where everyone is at the moment, you three are by a large tree. About 50ft away are Dani and the first robed figure, talking near the entrance of her hut. The robed figure's back is to you, Dani is looking in your direction but hasn't noticed you all. About 15ft away from them even further is a firepit, and on the second robed figure is at other end of the clearing in the brush. They are about 80ft away or so.
Having been shown the second figure, Elara pitches Dreli and Hilmir with half of a plan: "Me and Dani can handle the close one, if you two can take care of the farther one. You wanna be careful though, they know some magic."

Sneaking up to the farther one will take a successful DEX save from each. A failure will mean one of The Order members will spot you. If you're undetected, you will have the opportunity to roll a STR save to attempt a knock out. Failure on the STR save would result in a hit, but then combat would begin. Just wanted to lay out the stakes if you wanted to proceed that way, you are welcome to come up with a different plan of action.
Oct 9, 2023 7:59 pm
Recognizing this as an opportunity to showcase his skills to these newfound companions, Hilmir takes the initiative. Without discussing his plan with the others, he silently moves toward the second robed figure, intent on subduing him by striking with a rock.

Hilmir sneaks with incredible ability, and is nearly invisible as he moves towards the robed figure. A hefty rock in hand, he suddenly pops up beside the Order member and strikes him unconscious with one great blow.

Dreli lets Elara know that Hilmir has taken care of distant robed figure, allowing her to move in and execute her half of the plan. She sneaks up behind the threatening man from The Order, and makes a gesture to Dani to catch her attention. Dani subtly nods, and continues talking until she suddenly boots the man in the chest, pushing him into Elara who places him in hold. He is stunned to find himself restrained, and Dani knocks him out with a hard double-handed blow.

The pair celebrate the triumph quickly before Dani starts breaking down the walls of her hut, and Elara walks back to Hilmir and Dreli. "That was incredible! We got to get a move on, they won't be out too long and will come back with friends." She looks at Hilmir, "You're real strong. Why don't you help Dani tear down, Dreli and I will go search the Robes for anything useful."
OOC:
Based on context, Robes is a derogatory term casually used to refer to members of The Order."
The threat is neutralized for now, is it Dani and Elara's intent to rob the men but leave them where they are. If you don't object to their plan, in addition to anything your character may do or say include the following rolls:

Hilmir, please roll a STR save to help determine how effective you are at helping Dani take down her hut without causing damage.

Dreli, please roll a WIL save to aid Elara in searching the robed figures to determine whether or not you find everything on their persons.

Searching through their possessions, Dreli and Elara find the following items:

- 2 days dry rations (can stack with existing rations so you don't need to worry about taking up any additional slots)
- A total of 16 GP
- A pair of manacles
- Two daggers
- Two strange stones, rounded perfectly, with some kind of arrow carved into the top
- An amulet bearing a symbol associated with The Order
- A Spellbook for the spell Frenzy
[ +- ] Spell: Frenzy
Meanwhile, Hilmir briefly introduces himself to Dani and helps disassemble her hut. It is an improvised structure, with a framework that can be collapsed simply for easy transportation. While they're working on it, Dani says "Came up with the design myself, can make more but takes a lot of time and space to do it right. Thanks for your help back there, if Elara brought you here she must have a good feeling about both of you."

Looking over the items together, Elara expresses interest in one of the daggers, and one of the strange stones. Dani wants the manacles as she believes it can be used in one of her designs. After splitting the gold evenly (4GP to each of you), neither are interested in anything else but Dani says that she will take whatever you're not interested in to sell or trade.

Feel free to help yourselves to any of the remaining items, remember that you only have 10 inventory slots and when they're all full your HP drops to zero.
Oct 10, 2023 10:02 pm
Dreli will take the other dagger and the four gold pieces. If no one takes the amulet, Dreli will shovel it up and move away from the others to open a small hole with the shovel and chuck it in, before patting the small divot back into place.

Hilmir nods in approval when Dani talks about her hut, and says to her about Elara "Well, truth be told I’ve only just met her."

He looks around after the disassembly of the hut and ponders aloud, "So, what's our plan now? I don't think it's safe to linger here."

He refrains from picking any of the items.
Oct 11, 2023 12:27 am
While going over the items, Elara takes Dani to the side for a moment and has a brief conversation. They come back shortly after Dreli finishes burying the amulet.

"Okay so Elara has caught me up, and it would mean a lot if I could sit down and have a conversation with both of you." "Dani and I are part of a... " Elara looks to Dani unsure what word to use. "...outreach group." Dani finishes with a smirk. "We're sick of living under The Order's thumb and are getting people together to fight back."

Elara addresses Dreli, "You have some history with The Order, before you came to the woods. That's rare around here an' we think that could be real useful." Then looking to Hilmir, she continues, "And you have history with the Frogmen. We need someone to connect us to a Frogman scout."

Dani steps forward and speaks with an authoritative tone, "It's getting dark and we shouldn't waste our head start. I can get us to a secluded area where we can make a proper camp for the night. If you're in, come with us and we can talk more there. If not, thanks for the help back there."

With that, Dani starts walking away. Elara quickly follows.
Oct 11, 2023 1:32 pm
Hilmir turns his gaze toward Dreli and leans in slightly, engaging her in conversation. "You don't seem to be from these woods either, like myself, yes?" He inquires, his tone friendly and open. "What's your take on all of this and the two women? I must admit, I find the customs here rather perplexing, and I would appreciate your opinion, especially coming from someone who doesn't appear to have spent the last many years lost in these woods."
Oct 11, 2023 8:33 pm
Dreli follows along after Elara and Dani, moving with Hilmir. "i don't understand why everyone wants to live in the woods." She confides in the older man. "I don't understand why, if they want to fight to overthrow this Order, they simply let their red-clad foes free to continue harassing them in the future..and now with a grudge, cause they know who subdued them and took their belongings. We find manacles to bind at least one of them, but the desires are to use the cuffs as a part of a...design?"

Elara picks up a few pieces of wood from a pile that was already there, and gets a fire going. Dani drops the components of her hut off to the side, and gets Hilmir's help to move a couple large logs to use as makeshift benches positioned around the fire in a "V" shape. Elara says "I'll get some food going, y'all sit down and rest. Listen to what Dani has to say."

Dani sits, and beckons Hilmir and Dreli over toward the other bench, "I bet you both have a whole bunch of questions. If I'm asking for your help, least I could do is try to answer some of them."

"What exactly is it that you need help with?" Hilmir asks, his demeanor turning more business like.

Dani nods and gets to the point, "We've stumbled upon sort of a ruined temple, rumors are it was built by the Frogmen but they were driven out by The Order. I want to assemble a party to check it out further, and I want to get one of the Frogmen to join us. Problem is, Frogmen don't like getting mixed up in our messes. I hear some trust you?"
Oct 12, 2023 5:48 pm
Hilmir ponders the request, his brow furrowing slightly. "Why not go yourself, or perhaps, why go there in the first place? You see, I've heard tales from my previous companions, and old temples tend to have a fair share of their own peculiar problems, yes?" He shifts slightly, his rugged face showing a mix of concern and reluctance. "I wouldn't be against the idea of going, but it doesn't sit well with me to put a Frogman who's been nothing but welcoming in harm's way. It might come off as… He hesitates, as if the next word carries a heavy burden "inhospitable..."

"But I do understand why you've reached out to me for this undertaking," he continues, leaning in and lowering his voice so Dreli can’t hear, but she obviously can because she’s right there "Doesn't she strike you as somewhat... um, ill-suited for this type of endeavor?" gesturing towards Dreli.

Hilmir doesn’t think that Dreli fits the description of the adventuring type.
Oct 12, 2023 7:44 pm
Dreli sits down and stabs the blade of the shovel into the ground in front of her. She crosses her arms, as the old man speaks about her as if she isn't there. Old people seem to have this problem, as she's learned over the course of her existence.

"Where are these woods exactly? They are no where I have ever seen or heard of except in children's tales." She blurts out. "I've never liked going to temple. The ones you call the Order here, have some very ignorant ideas of religion, where I come from. What kind of ruined temple? I don't want to go in any place those red-robed fanatics have created."

Dani carefully listens to what Hilmir and Dani have to say. Her tone is more passionate now, but less authoritative. "The Order get away with what they get away with because they wield a terrible weapon: The Sweepers. Huge golems, powerful enough to rip apart anything The Robes point them at. No one knows how to stop one but something in my gut tells me there's some clues in the old Frogman temple."

She looks at her feet for a moment, before turning to Dreli and continuing. "I've been in these woods for a few years and I still couldn't tell you where they are. But you... you seem to have some background others don't. I'd never go into an Order temple either, but this was built by the Frogmen. We know at one point The Order destroyed it, and sometime after that The Sweepers showed up. That's why I think there must be some clue there."

Oct 13, 2023 1:14 pm
After hearing the new information, Hilmir agrees to help.
Oct 13, 2023 11:31 pm
"I am drawing on my memory of children's tales, I now have no idea how the Karkross allowed me to learn, but one of them says that after the frogmen had a bountiful harvest they shared their food and taught the other creatures of the woods many skills. The all lived in harmony..I guess until these fanatics showed up and destroyed their temple." Dreli tells the others. "I'll help, because I genuinely hate the Karkross and their ways."
Oct 14, 2023 1:12 am
Dani claps her hands in delight and her entire demeanor loosens up. "Yes! Thank you, this is..." she trails off for a moment, becoming emotional, but clears her throat and continues, "It's easy to lose hope in this place. If we can knock The Order down a peg or two it will inspire a lot of people to push back."

Elara has been preparing a stew, which smells quite nice, and indicates it will take a bit longer to flavor properly. A little more relaxed now that there's an initial buy-in, Dani says, "So how did you both end up in these woods anyway? Anything about this place I can help shed some light on?"
OOC:
If you have any questions, they can be asked in character or just OOC if you'd prefer. Dani would be quite forthcoming about most things so it's a decent opportunity to address any lingering questions Dreli or Hilmir may have.
Oct 14, 2023 1:51 pm
Hilmir answers Dani's question about being in the woods with honesty, although he keeps the details somewhat succinct. He says, "I started my journey into these woods early in the morning, hoping to cover as much ground as possible before nightfall. Along the way, I encountered a challenging passage with a thick canopy that led me to a small clearing. I took it as a sign to rest, and that's when I was awakened by the presence of four frogmen, who seemed just as surprised to find me as I was to find them. They had spears and rocks, but we managed to communicate, and I'm here now."
Oct 14, 2023 7:35 pm
"I was kidnapped by two men." Dreli begins. "I knew them, because they were relatives of mine: An uncle and a cousin. In the land I come from, they were well known as members of the Karkross belief. My entire family was." She pauses and looks down at her hands. "I never felt like I belonged there. The things they believed...they things they did."

"I can only guess that someone decided to do away with the black sheep of the family. So, I was led into the woods near my home for the purposes to do me harm. At some point I blacked out and when I awoke, I was covered in dirt in these woods. There had been a struggle around me. I can only believe it had been between my two captors. One of them was dead nearby. The other...I don't know...vanished into the woods?"

Dani takes in a breath and lets out a deep sigh. "I've only been pushing up against The Order the last couple years, and that's been hell on earth... I couldn't imagine what it must have been like to grow up in that." She then appears to disassociate for a moment, staring into the fire.

Elara chooses to break the awkward silence by addressing Hilmir, "Do you think you could get back to where you met the Frogmen? Humans aren't welcome in their village, so there's hard to come across unless ya catch 'em on a patrol. They're among the quietest creatures in these woods, so that's not easy."

Dani snaps out of her haze, "If you two just came here, there's probably other newcomers... that means Elara and I got some work to do. Hilmir, if we give you and Dreli five days to come back to this spot, do you think you could bring back a Frogman willing to help?"
OOC:
Based on distance/direction from where they are, Hilmir figures it would take about a day and a half to get back to the mountain path Korban showed him.
Oct 15, 2023 1:05 am
Hilmir listens to Dreli's story with a mix of concern and sympathy. "Well, it's clear you've been through a lot," he says, offering her a warm but somewhat reassuring smile. "It's a testament to your strength that you managed to find your way here. You're among friends now, and we'll do our best to help each other. These Order folks seem off, too wrapped up in their own world and ideas."

Turning his attention to Elara, he nods thoughtfully. "Getting back to where I met the Frogmen shouldn't be too hard. As for bringing back a Frogman willing to help, well, I can try my best. They've been nothing but kind to me so far. Five days should be enough time." Hilmir's confidence in the Frogmen's goodwill comes through in his response.
Oct 15, 2023 7:25 pm
Dreli seems reluctant to go off looking for frogmen. "I don't like it in these woods." She says. "Surely, they don't go on forever..."
Oct 16, 2023 12:36 am
Elara and Dani glance at each other for a moment, and exchange looks that seem to reflect a silent conversation between them. Elara appears to concede the point to Dani, who answers Dreli, "There's a strange magic coursing through these woods. No matter how far you walk in any direction, and I've tried them all, you find yourself back at the valley." She pauses for a moment and shakes her head, before continuing. "You might not like the woods, but you definitely wouldn't like the valley. Especially not at night, after dusk that's where The Order hang out."
Oct 17, 2023 2:40 pm
OOC:
After the meal Dani and Elara would suggest resting for the evening. Everyone takes a short watch each, but they go by uneventfully. In the morning, if Dreli still has doubts Dani and Elara would not try to influence her further and leave the choice up to her.

Should Dreli decide to go along with Hilmir, we can continue in this thread. If she decides to proceed differently say so in here, but then we can continue her story back in the other thread.
Oct 18, 2023 7:18 am
Left with no option that seems to get her any closer to getting out of these forsaken woods, Dreli acquiesces to joining in the journey to find the frogmen.
Oct 18, 2023 2:12 pm
From your current location, the area Hilmir last encountered the frogmen is to the north-east. The valley Dani warned about (which is also the one Hilmir got a view of earlier), is to your east running somewhat parallel. This leaves you three possible paths to reach your destination:

Path A)
Go through the deepest part of the wood from where you are now. The Order does patrols of the woods during the daytime, but they usually stick to the less dense areas. It is also much easier to remain unseen in this part of the woods, but harder to travel through so it would take about 1.5-2 days.

Path B)
Go to the less dense part of the wood, closer to the valley, and walk along the edge of that. The Order focuses most of their energies here, and it's harder to hide here, but it would take about 1.25-1.5 days.

Path C)
Go to the valley, and walk through that instead of the woods. Elara warns that there is an Order settlement there, and at night The Robes guard over it instead of doing patrols in the woods. It would be very difficult to hide because it is quite wide open here, but the travel would be about 0.75-1 day. This means that there's a chance you'd make it through before it got dark, but everything would need to go very smoothly for that to happen.

Decide which path you'd like to take, and overall what your approach would be. Are you marching through and eating rations? How quiet are you trying to be? Etc.

Hilmir turns to Dreli, his eyes filled with determination, and speaks with a sense of conviction. "We'll take the path along the edge of the valley, closer to the less dense part of the woods," he says firmly. "We'll have to tread carefully, but it's a safer choice that still gives us time." His words convey his commitment to ensuring their safety and well-being on their journey.

Hilmir wants to make sure Dreli understands that he's quite protective, especially since he sees this journey as a sort of job and not because of any fondness for Dreli. He takes great pride in his ability to guard and protect, and once he commits to a task, he's determined not to appear incapable.
OOC:
I assume that Dreli and Hilmir would be cautious by not overly so. They would probably eat the rations they have to keep a decent pace.
As they walk, Hilmir launches into a story, his face animated and his voice filled with enthusiasm. He regales Dreli with a tale of a time when he attempted to carry a substantial barrel filled with apples for a lady.
OOC:
Hilmir tells this same story to everyone he's with. It's supposed be a humous story. Could you let me know how Dreli receives it, so I know how to Hilmir would react to their time together?
Oct 19, 2023 6:48 pm
Dreli nods her understanding of Hilmer's intent to travel along the less dense part of the woods on their way to locate the frogmen again. She mostly follows along quietly, observing their surroundings, and pondering her own inner thoughts of the entire situation she has found herself in. She listens to Hilmer's story, but watches cautiously around them the whole time he's regaling her of his apple incident and chuckles only briefly at the appropriate time.
Oct 19, 2023 8:48 pm
OOC:
Please ensure you've both removed 1 ration from your inventory, that will cover you for this day.
The travel for the first half of the day is uneventful. Dreli and Hilmir notice some small animals, and find some evidence that some larger creatures (about the size of a deer) were recently near, but nothing gets in their way. One thing they notice are traps in some of the trees, several in the area they are in now. They can't tell if something has been caught or not from the ground, but it looks as though many have something small inside. Perhaps a bird, squirrel, or similar.

Do you investigate more in this area, or interact with anything, or keep proceeding at the same pace? If you proceed, it will still take over 1 day total even if things keep going this smoothly, so think about what your intentions are for the period where night begins to fall.

Also, since this is an area under patrol by The Order, roll a DEX and WIL Save each. This will determine how silently you're moving through the woods, and if you manage to spot any of The Robes out on patrol so you can adjust course accordingly. Failures won't necessarily result in a confrontation, but could end up on the path towards one.

The pair keep moving through the woods swiftly, but occasionally Hilmir makes a bit more noise than intended. Dreli spots a trio of Robes from quite far away, your course is adjusted slightly to avoid them costing a little bit of time.

As it starts to get closer to dusk, Hilmir and Dreli recall that the Robes patrol the woods in the day, and the valley at night. Their current path rests between both, meaning that in about an hour the Robes will be leaving the woods en masse and there's a good chance some of them will be coming through this area, but once it gets dark they'll all be in the valley.

Let me know what you intend to do as it gets dark, and what your plan is for the nighttime. The woods are varied in this area, so if you're looking for a certain feature (tree strong enough to climb, big rock, thicker brush, area adequate for camp, stream, etc) as long as it's reasonable assume you can find it nearby.

Also remember that you can always pitch a complex or difficult series of actions as long as it is something possible for your character to achieve. It may involve a series of rolls and there may be risks associated with failure, but you're welcome to think outside the box.
Oct 21, 2023 1:36 pm
Hilmir voices his opinion that finding a secure, concealed campsite for the night is a priority.

"Dreli, we need to set up a hidden camp, somewhere that'll be hard for them to spot. We'll get through this night, and tomorrow we'll carry on our path."

He keeps his eyes peeled for an area with thick underbrush or a dense cluster of trees where they could set up their campsite without being easily detected. He would specifically look for a spot that offers both cover and a bit of elevation for a better vantage point. Additionally, he'd scout for a large, sturdy tree or rock that could serve as a potential lookout point, giving them an advantage if they need to keep an eye on any approaching danger.

He'd would keep an eye out for any potential water sources like a stream, but he wouldn't prioritize camping near that if it would sacrifice safety.
Oct 21, 2023 6:48 pm
"Sure, Hilmir." Dreli replies quietly, in almost a whisper. She occasionally takes sips from her water container and nips at a bite of rations, but doesn't really consume much over the course of their journey throughout the day.
Oct 21, 2023 11:08 pm
Each of you please roll a WIL and DEX save to determine how hidden you're able to make the spot you find.

Hilmir and Dreli search the area and find a spot with a large rock that can be climbed for greater visibility, that is close enough to a stream to refill supplies without drawing unwanted attention.

While they work together to assemble their camp, the noises from the woods shift as the nocturnal animals begin to wake up. They both see some movement in trees high above them, not directly above the campsite but in the general vicinity.
OOC:
It looks like it will be a clear night, so they'll still be able to see a little bit if they wish to hold off on a fire, just not very far. If they do build a fire they'll be able to see twice as far, but will also be more noticable.

As the sunsets and darkness comes, Dreli and Hilmir hear a low-chant echo through the woods. It echos around in all directions, making it hard to tell where it is coming from exactly. Perhaps several areas at once.

The two of you work to assemble a hidden camp together, and mostly manage to succeed although moonlight on Dreli's cloak seems to create little glimmers of light from certain angles.
They hide for a few minutes, and hear the chanting fade away. The woods go quiet, then Dreli and Hilmir hear some nocturnal animals begin to chirp to each other. The night has arrived.
Oct 23, 2023 1:05 pm
Hilmir listens carefully to the surrounding sounds and then turns to Dreli with a suggestion. In a hushed tone, he says, "Dreli, I believe we should take turns keeping watch. I'll start with the first shift. But before that, you should have a bit more to eat to keep your energy up. I have some pedals given by the frogmen; they have a peculiar taste, but they should suffice."
Oct 23, 2023 9:03 pm
Dreli waves off the flower petals. "I'm fine. Really. I'll try to rest then. Wake me if I am asleep, when you want to get some rest yourself." She says to Hilmir.
Oct 24, 2023 12:52 am
Hilmir takes first watch as Dreli sleeps, and notices some movement in the trees above but can't quite make out what it may be. It is somewhat large though, at least two feet wide. The creature, whatever it may be, is moving very quietly. Any noise is coming from the leaves rustling against each other.
OOC:
What does Hilmir have on his person for the watch at the moment? Is the rest of his gear in the pack somewhere to the side?
Oct 24, 2023 2:12 am
OOC:
Hilmir wears his standard gear, which includes his helmet, shield, and spear. His axe hangs from his belt for convenient access, and his pack is positioned nearby, closer to Dreli along with her belongings.
Intrigued by the movement in the trees above, Hilmir narrows his eyes and maintains a keen watch. He keeps his guard up, ready to respond if needed, but also curious to identify what the creature might be without startling it or alerting it to his presence.
Oct 24, 2023 4:37 pm
While Hilmir focuses on the movement, he sees something leap to another tree, scurry down, and then jump to the ground. He couldn't quite make it out, but knows he saw some type of dark teal tail. Whatever it is seems to be about 50ft away near some brush.

Hilmir also still hears some movement in the trees, behind where he is currently looking.
Oct 24, 2023 4:41 pm
Hilmir carefully attempts to gather more information from his current position, unwilling to leave Dreli alone and vulnerable. He remains watchful, fully aware that if something unexpected were to occur, his immediate reaction would be to shout and rouse Dreli.
Oct 24, 2023 5:06 pm
The movement seems to cycle between three main areas: the area on the ground where the figure dropped, in the trees among the leaves up above, and what seems to be something jumping between two trees somewhere on the other side of the camp. It seems almost like the intent is to distract and confuse. All of the noise is still from the movement though, no growls or barks or anything like that.

Hilmir, please roll a DEX save and WIL save. This will determine what you can figure out from there.

Dreli, please roll a DEX save and WIL save. This will determine if the current commotion wakes you.

Hilmir realizes that the one on the ground is moving in a predictable pattern, but it's just a little too fast for him and he's only able to catch partial glimpses. Some kind of wing, some teal fur, red eyes. It doesn't seem to be getting closer to Hilmir, but keeps jumping in and out of his peripheral vision.

Dreli wakes up hearing some movement in the trees nearby, but also something much closer. Turning around, she notices something going through Hilmir's pack. It is a small teal creature that looks like a monkey, but it has wings.
https://i.imgur.com/YSDwNcu.jpg
Realizing that it's been spotted by Dreli the creature jumps backward empty-handed, makes two loud barks.
Oct 25, 2023 8:16 am
"That doesn't belong to you." Dreli tells the little creature as it sounds its displeasure at having been caught attempting to pilfer Hilmir's pack.
Oct 25, 2023 12:33 pm
Hilmir does his best to monitor the creature moving in the trees, ensuring he doesn't lose sight of it. As he hears Dreli, he says, "Dreli, There is more than one of those creatures. Try to shoo the one down here away, if you can. I'll keep an eye on the other."
Oct 25, 2023 4:49 pm
Having been caught, the one near Dreli scampers off into the woods, and the other two follow suit. The pair of you listen for any commotion for a few moments, but they seem to have left in earnest. This occurred near the end of Hilmir's watch, so you switch for the rest of the night and Dreli's goes by without incident. Just some hooting in the trees far away.

Based on Hilmir's estimations, you should get to the area you last encountered the frogmen in the early afternoon. Note that there are still agents of The Order patrolling this area, it's just not their focus. Let me know how you generally intend on proceeding the rest of the way, and what your actions would be should you hear/see someone or something approaching where you are.

Dreli and Hilmir proceed without any problems for a few hours, until they hear something very large moving through the woods somewhere to the east. You're on the otherside of a hill from it, so they can't see what it is, but it is making a lot of commotion.
OOC:
Would you try to avoid it? Investigate further?
Oct 28, 2023 12:10 am
Dreli's eyes widen as she hears the sounds from the other side of the hill. She glances over to Hilmir and tightens her grip on the shovel handle.
Oct 28, 2023 12:22 am
Hilmir voices his concern, "That doesn't sound promising, but it's best to find out. You stay here, and I'll go investigate." With those words, he cautiously proceeds in the direction of the mysterious noise, his hand firmly grasping his spear.

Hilmir silently gets to a better vantage point, and sees a massive entity formed of large white rocks held together by some sort of glowing magical energy. Based on previous conversations Hilmir believes it is one of the "Sweepers" he has heard so much about. It lumbers along a path through the woods that appears to be formed by lots of heavy traffic. It somewhat resembles the similar pathways in the valley.
https://i.imgur.com/gRWhZpG.jpg
A moment later, Hilmir sees two people in dark red robes walking along the same route having a quiet conversation. They don't take notice of Hilmir at all, and they are going in a different direction from your destination.
OOC:
Assuming you'd like to avoid them, it will take about an hour from here to get to the area Hilmir last encountered the frogmen. Let me know if there is anything you'd keep an eye out for, or any actions either of you would take as you'd get closer to that area. It would be the early afternoon.
Oct 29, 2023 1:14 am
Hilmir quietly makes his way back to where Dreli is waiting. His eyes hold a rare hint of worry. He starts to explain what he saw in hushed tones, "Dreli, you won't believe this. I spotted a massive entity formed of these large white rocks. I believe it's one of those 'Sweepers' we've heard about." He continues with the rest of the description.

After letting her take in the information he says "Let's keep moving. It's not coming in our direction, so I think we're fine for now."
OOC:
I think they would continue as they did before not looking for anything in particular. However, if Dreli suggests they do something or look for anything, he would go along with it.
Oct 29, 2023 9:14 pm
Dreli nods and silently moves away from the area with Hilmir. Later, she would describe the Sweeper see saw previously and compare notes with the one he saw on the other side of the hill.
Oct 30, 2023 1:31 am
OOC:
Based on you conversation, it seems the Sweeper was very similar to the one Dreli saw. You've both been told there are more than one, but they seem to be quite similar in nature.
The pair of you arrive at your destination, Hilmir can even make out the rocks that he placed several days ago. In your initial look around and listen, neither of you see any signs of the frogmen.
Oct 30, 2023 1:51 am
Unable to find any traces of the frogman, Hilmir turns to Dreli and says "Let me try this."

He retrieves his horn and proceeds to sound the same distinctive call he had previously demonstrated to Korban. His hope is that the frogman is nearby and can hear this familiar call.
OOC:
FLASHBACK:
SpiritualSocket says:
"Korban, I'd like to leave you with a parting gesture."

With a sense of nostalgia, he retrieves his horn. "This is Hilmir's call," he explains, …

He proceeds to demonstrate the call to Korban, though he keeps it quiet to avoid drawing unwanted attention. The horn call uses this pattern: short, long, short, long, a pause, and then a series of three long notes.
Oct 30, 2023 2:01 am
He looks at his horn with a broad grin and playfully says to Dreli, "Dreli, I think when we finally make it out of here, I'm going to gift you a horn as fine as this one. Then we can call to each other from across the woods." Pausing for a moment, he adds with a hint of concern, "Let's just hope I don't inadvertently summon all the forest's troubles upon us." His face shifts from cheer to contemplation.
Oct 30, 2023 7:43 pm
"I hope to soon no longer be in these woods." Dreli replies to Hilmir. "Living in them is not my idea of living, with or without the Order."
Oct 31, 2023 12:18 am
After a few moments, you both hear a call return in the same pattern coming from the north-east, but two short notes are added to the end.

It isn't long before a small brown frogman holding a spear enters the clearing. Until it appeared, Dreli and Hilmir didn't hear it moving through the woods at all. The creature salutes Hilmir, then places its arm across its chest and bows towards Dreli.

This is Korban, the frogman Hilmir has mentioned previously. They point towards the sun, which is getting low in the sky, and half-shrug toward Hilmir as if to say it's getting late, what's going on?.
Oct 31, 2023 12:34 pm
Hilmir returns Korban's salute and introduces Dreli to him. Understanding that it's getting late, Hilmir quickly turns to the matter at hand and conveys the recent events to Korban. He relies on gestures, drawing on the ground, and the limited vocabulary he's picked up from their prior encounter to communicate everything.

Finishing his impromptu explanation, Hilmir says to Korban, "Korban, I don't know these other humans very well, and I don't want to impose. However, it appears that we might be able to handle the issue of the sweepers. This could potentially be advantageous for both your Kolasa and us."

The frogman looks contemplative for a moment, and then studies Dreli. After a deep sigh, they use hand gestures to indicate that hierarchy may be an issue, such assistance is something that would require special approval.

Seeing that the dark will be upon them soon, Korban uses gestures to offer Dreli and Hilmir lodging for the evening.
OOC:
Although most of the frogmen don't speak english, they seem to have a remarkable intuition for body language.
Nov 1, 2023 12:59 pm
Hilmir accepts the offer and follows Korban doing his best to follow any customs of the frogmen.
Nov 1, 2023 8:36 pm
Dreli mirrors Korban's gesture toward her and stands aside as Hilmir and the frogman converse, then follows along.
Nov 2, 2023 1:59 am
Korban leads the way through some winding paths, and before long you reach an area that looks like some sort of modest swamp village.
https://i.imgur.com/c2TqjPn.jpg
Two frogmen guards with spears are standing a bit further up the pathway and looking at your group suspiciously. Korban raises their hands up, telling Dreli and Hilmir to wait, and goes over to talk to them. It doesn't sound like any language either of you have heard, but it is getting quite heated and there seems to be lots of pointing in the direction of Hilmir and Dreli.

A few other frogmen appear, drawn in by the commotion. Their murmurs turn to a hushed silence, as an older frogman walks through the crowd. The villagers part making a path for them to walk through, and Korban and the guards go silent as well when they notice them walk up. They have a short yellow beard, are wearing an extravagant vest with all sorts of trinkets.

The older frog exchanges a few short grumbles with Korban, who seems to be communicating quite passionately. They turn to the crowd and order them all to disperse, which they do with great haste. The only ones remaining are Korban, the older frog, and the two guards.

Surprising Dreli and Hilmir, the older frog turns to them and speaks in perfect english: "I am Fenrit, the leader of this village. Korban tells me that he promised you a safe place to rest. We honor our agreements here, so you shall get one, but this other business..." they lean in closer and drop their voice to a whisper, "As a rule, we don't get involved in your conflict. But come inside, tell me more. We might be able to do something."

With that, he motions for Korban to come along as well, and Fenrit leads all of you back to his hut. It is larger than you'd expect inside, and looks like a store with all sorts of items displayed. Weapons, books, tools, a very wide variety of goods of all kinds. Fenrit points towards a table with some stools and tells you to sit, and asks you both if you'd like some tea.
Nov 2, 2023 2:21 pm
Hilmir graciously accepts the offered tea and introduces himself and Dreli to Fenrit, saying, "I am Hilmir, and this is Dreli. We're truly grateful for your hospitality. In my journeys, I've found that hospitality is one of the greatest virtues."

As Hilmir recounts his journey into the woods and the fortuitous meeting with Korban, he keeps his storytelling concise trying to share the key details without overwhelming his hosts. He explains the reason for their current visit, saying, "We've come here seeking your help and counsel."

Throughout the conversation, Hilmir remains open and transparent, readily answering any questions Fenrit might have. He wants to ensure that he conveys his willingness to cooperate and build a rapport with their frogman hosts.
Nov 3, 2023 2:24 pm
OOC:
It sounds like Hilmir would do most of the talking here. Would Dreli stay fairly quiet, or maybe ask some questions? She has heard some tales of frogmen, but never encountered them before. What is her general demeanor in Fenrit's hut?
Nov 3, 2023 10:11 pm
Dreli remains mostly quiet while amongst the frogmen. She has heard of them, of course, in children's tales, but she had always imagined them as fanciful creatures that didn't really exist.
Nov 4, 2023 12:29 am
Fenrit listens to Hilmir's explanation, and brings up the main concern, "We have an agreement with The Order. The frogmen stay out of the conflict between your groups, and our village will be considered off limits for their activities. Thus far, The Order has honored that agreement."

He sips his tea and continues. "But the Sweepers are dreadful and destructive blights upon this land, and the temple..." Fenrit gets emotional for a moment, but keeps going "That temple was the holiest place our kind ever knew, and The Order desecrated it in their attempt to seize control of this land."

"I will agree to send Korban with you to aid in this scouting mission, on a few conditions. First: Under no circumstances can he be seen having any sort of confrontation with any member of The Order. Second: Anything taken from the temple, anything at all, must be seen by me. Third: If captured on this mission, you will tell them that you bought Korban from a slaver to the north of the valley."

Fenrit stands up, and gestures around to the wares surrounding him. "I'm not sure exactly what your plan is, but no one in these woods has a wider array of goods in their stock. I noticed you have some interesting items with you. Perhaps if there's anything you need, we can make some kind of deal?"

Fenrit is willing to consider a deal which would give each of you one item from his shop to aid in this quest. You can trade some of your gear/money, agree to handle a small job for him, or a mix of both.

If interested, let me know what sort of item you might be after (you can be vague if you want), and I'll let you know a couple things he'd have available and what the "cost" would be.
Nov 4, 2023 1:46 am
Hilmir listens attentively as Fenrit lays out his conditions, nodding in agreement. He responds with a tone of sincerity, saying, "I am a man of my word and wholeheartedly agree to your conditions." Hilmir then adds with a warm smile, "Korban has shown us great hospitality, and I consider him a dear friend. I will protect him and his honor as if he were my own kin."

He then takes a moment to think about anything they may need.
OOC:
@RageRed can you think of any questions we should ask or gear that we need? I open to the handling of a small job for Fenrit if you want, or I'm open to moving forward one the main thing.
Nov 4, 2023 12:35 pm
OOC:
What we can carry is very limited and Dreli doesn't have any suggests on things they would need for prolonged traipsing around in the woods.
Nov 4, 2023 5:28 pm
OOC:
Some items can expand what you can carry, as an example one item available is a limited bag of holding. 3 Slots (or 1 Bulky and 1 Normal item) worth of items take up one slot in your sheet.

There is also a set of binoculars that can make things out even in the dark, as well as an umbrella that turns into a single-person tent that looks like a shrub.
Nov 5, 2023 1:25 pm
OOC:
Would they be willing to trade any of the items listed for Hilmir's relic "Idunn's Flask?"
Nov 5, 2023 5:33 pm
OOC:
Fenrit would be willing to trade any of those items for Hilmir's flask or Dreli's cloak. One item for one item.

Additionally, they would be willing to give either of you one of those items if you agree to deliver a written message to a dangerous individual in the woods. This person is not with The Order, but also is not someone to be trusted. Fenrit estimates it will take less than two days total.
Nov 5, 2023 6:15 pm
Dreli shakes her head at the idea of trading her cloak or delivering messages. She just wants to get the temple thing over with and get out of these woods as soon as possible.
Nov 5, 2023 7:19 pm
OOC:
Hilmir will trade his flask for the binoculars. He agrees with Dreli to not delay and head straight to the temple.
Nov 7, 2023 12:58 am
Fenrit places the flask on a display shelf behind them, and hands Hilmir the binoculars which come in an elegant protective casing. "These are called Darksight Binoculars. They allow you to see even in the dark, but it's a bit disorienting to look at anything up close."
OOC:
Think of these like nightvision googles, but they're still binoculars so it's not so easy to focus on nearby things.
Korban looks over the items and exchanges a few whispers with Fenrit. After a nod, Korban pockets something from the table beside them and retires for the evening so that they can all leave early in the morning. Fenrit has an extra room for each of you, and participates in some polite conversation (but doesn't pry) before heading to bed as well.

In the morning, Korban greets Dreli and Hilmir with some breakfast they can have on the way. It is similar to a fish burrito, but wrapped in a large leaf.

You have the same options for heading back. Go through the dense wood (slower with no patrols), the moderate wood (some patrols, a bit faster), or the valley (fastest but wide open, easily spotted from far away). Additionally let me know if you have any specific plans, or generally just plan to get back to Dani and Elara as fast as possible. At the moment there are three days left to the deadline.
Nov 7, 2023 1:30 pm
OOC:
+ Darksight Binoculars
- Idunn's Flask

I think the general plan would be to head back to Dani and Elara as fast as possible. Are we now travelling with Korban? If so, I think we would try to leverage his knowledge of the woods to help make our travel smoother.
Nov 7, 2023 11:07 pm
OOC:
Were we supposed to bring back Korban by the deadline or travel to this temple and then rendezvous with Dani and Elara?
Nov 8, 2023 1:19 am
OOC:
It was to bring back Korban by the deadline, the temple is actually on the other side of the valley and would probably take around five days just to get to, but Dreli and Hilmir don't know exactly where it is.
Korban uses a stick to draw a few paths in the dirt, and seems to be strongly suggesting travel through the deepest part of the wood. They puff out their chest a bit, as if to say that they'll lead you through with great efficiency.
OOC:
Mechanically, Korban's expertise means that you'll be able to go through the woods just as quickly as the valley, so the dense area won't cost you any extra time and you'll be less likely to encounter any Order members. It will take about a day in total no matter which direction you choose.
Nov 8, 2023 1:12 pm
OOC:
I think we'll take Korban's lead taking whichever way he suggests.

Dreli nods her understanding or Korban's intent with his semantics and follows along.
Nov 9, 2023 12:08 am
In the first few hours you don't encounter anything too notable, although Korban stops for a few minutes to point out an edible plant that is abundant in this area.

About half way through your journey, you all enter a clearing with a circle of stones in the middle. Korban stiffens suddenly, and starts to look around in concern.

Dreli and Hilmir realize that the path they were walking on has vanished, and the trees around them have moved closer together. The five stones in the middle of the clearing hum with a soft white glow, before returning to their normal gray color. The trees around you feel terrible and foreboding.

Korban grabs a stick, and draws a key into the dirt. Then they point to the stones in the middle and shrug.
OOC:
The closer anyone gets to the trees, they feel more and more overwhelmed with fear. If any of you attempt to push through, saves will be required to prevent taking mental damage.
Nov 9, 2023 2:31 pm
OOC:
Do they take risk mental damage if they walk towards the stones?
Nov 9, 2023 8:29 pm
OOC:
No, neither Hilmir nor Dreli feel any fear towards the stones (or any weird vibes at all). Just the woods around them. As long as they're a couple feet away they feel perfectly normal. Korban appears to be effected in the same way too.
Nov 9, 2023 8:32 pm
Dreli sighs. "More weirdness in the woods of weirdness. Why am I not surprised?" She slowly approaches the stones and looks at Korban's drawing of a key.
Nov 10, 2023 1:38 pm
Hilmir, intrigued and perhaps a bit too confidently, strides directly into the circle of stones.
Nov 10, 2023 6:06 pm
About halfway through Dreli's sentence, one of the stones glows for just a moment. Upon closer inspection there some are symbols upon them that neither of you are familiar with.

Korban points to the trees, makes an exaggerated mischievous face, uses their hands to mimic the movements of a small creature, and mimes the act of being trapped in a box. Then points to the stones, and acts out opening a door and walking through it.
Nov 11, 2023 2:36 pm
Hilmir confused decides to walk into the circle of stones.
Nov 11, 2023 5:29 pm
The stones look quite heavy, and don't appear to have moved from their places in a very long time. Other than the initial glow on all of them, and the quick flash on one while Dreli was speaking, they don't seem to react to you getting closer and looking them over.

After an initial hestitation Korban tries touching one of them, but nothing happens. Frustrated they take a few steps outside of the stones and begin angrily muttering in the frogman language while pacing around. As they gesture towards the trees mid-rant, the same stone that glowed for a moment when Dreli spoke quickly glows again before returning to normal.
Nov 11, 2023 9:04 pm
Dreli reaches down and touched the stone that has glowed twice now to see if anything else happened.
Nov 12, 2023 12:55 am
The stones each have a unique symbol: ⩣ ⍭ ⍙ ⩯ ⊥
OOC:
(for ease of typing, we can just use 1 2 3 4 5 for them in the order above)
The one with the ⩣ marking (Stone 1), is the one which has glowed twice. Dreli touches the stone and nothing happens, but it is smoother than she expected.
Nov 12, 2023 1:18 am
Hilmir raises an eyebrow at Korban. "I hope this isn't some kind of trick you've decided to play on us. That would not be very hospitable," he remarks. Turning to Dreli, he adds, "Is the stone lighting up when you speak?"
Nov 12, 2023 1:47 am
Dreli grabs up a handful of dirt and spinkles some on the first stone. "Earth." She says.
Nov 12, 2023 7:19 pm
Korban looks somewhat offended by Hilmir's suggestion, and uses their hands to mimic a small mischievous creature. It seems they're saying that the trick is being played by some sort of pixie or sprite.

As soon as the dirt lands on the stone it starts to glow, and when Dreli speaks it brightens for a second. Now, even with no one speaking it remains softly lit.
OOC:
That was Stone 1, the remaining stones are:

⍭ ⍙ ⩯ ⊥ (2 3 4 5)
Nov 12, 2023 7:31 pm
"By the gods, Dreli, you're on to something," Hilmir exclaims, looking at her expectantly for the next step. He then adds "I was about blow my trusty horn."
Last edited November 12, 2023 7:32 pm
Nov 13, 2023 3:39 am
Dreli's eyes widen at the thought of Hilmir blowing his horn and alerting everyone and everything to their presence. She leans in low and blows steadily on the second stone. "Air." She says.
Nov 13, 2023 1:19 pm
Hilmir, beginning to realize the pattern that Dreli is trying, offers her his water gourd canteen and says, "Will water be next?"
Nov 13, 2023 3:09 pm
OOC:
I'm going to make a couple assumptions below, if there's any objections we can edit however anyone wants.
When Hilmir says "blow", and Dreli says "air" the ⩯ Stone (Stone 4) lights up for a moment. With this additional clue, Dreli blows on that one instead and it too stays lit.

When Hilmir says the word "water" outloud, the ⍭ Stone (Stone 2) flashes and then dims. Having identified the pattern, he pours a bit out of his canteen gourd and the glow persists.

Korban having understood the pattern as well, starts to look around the area picking up sticks.
OOC:
The remaining stones are:
⍙ ⊥ (3 5)
Nov 13, 2023 6:24 pm
OOC:
Works for me. I misinterpreted the symbols by appearance.
Nov 13, 2023 11:18 pm
Hilmir says, "Well, I suppose fire is the next stone, but what is left? Is it blood, metal..." He says the last two words slowly, observing to see if one of the stones lights up.
Nov 14, 2023 1:38 am
As Hilmir says "fire", Stone ⍙ (Stone 3) lights up briefly. The remaining stone with the ⊥ symbol (Stone 5), doesn't react to either of the words.
Nov 14, 2023 1:43 am
"Korban how’s that fire coming along? Do you need me to gather more wood?"
Nov 14, 2023 8:15 am
"I think the last one is Spirit." Dreli speaks up. "Though, I don't know how we are to present that to complete the circle."
Nov 14, 2023 2:04 pm
"Spirit? Like a ghost? Or are you thinking of magic?" He rubs his chin thoughtfully. "I think these Darksight Binoculars are magical, and I could set them on the stone. I really don't know much about magic other than the magic of a good story! I'd gladly tell the stone a story about this one time when I had to carry a heavy barrel of apples. Have I told you that story yet? It's very good."
Nov 14, 2023 5:33 pm
Korban gets a small fire going and drops a flaming stick on the ⍙ stone resulting in a solid glow.

As Dreli and Hilmir speak, "spirit" and "ghost" seem to make the last stone flicker, but it was quite faint and not as pronounced as the other times the stones reacted to words.

Korban puts their hand on their chin and quietly stares at the last stone pondering.
Nov 16, 2023 2:28 pm
Facing a challenge that Hilmir can't solve with his strength or hospitable nature, he lets out an exasperated sigh and sits down on a rock. "At first, I enjoyed these woods because a new friend would pop out from hiding every now and again. However, I'm starting to feel that these woods are trouble."

Addressing Dreli with a slight smile "I believe that this is what you've been hinting at for some time. Is it not?"

Then turning to Korban. "How can you stand this place? It must be very frustrating."

He then sits and ponders a solution to the problem.

Rolls

WIL Save - An Epiphany Perhaps - (1d20)

(1) = 1

Nov 16, 2023 3:36 pm
Korban looks down at their feet for a moment, before gesturing to the woods around them and placing their hand over their heart. Then, they point to the sky and shrug. It appears as though they're saying they've never known anywhere different.

Korban looks at the stone before saying the word "morta". The ⊥ symbol and the stone shine brightly for a moment before dimming again.

Dreli and Hilmir turn to Korban, who looks somber and begins to draw something in the dirt. To the left, a figure standing tall and upright. To the right, a similar looking figure on the ground with a knife sticking out of their back. Korban taps the stick on the drawing on the right and says "morta".

The remaining stone shines brightly once again. Hilmir knows instantly what Korban is saying: death.
OOC:
Wow quite the roll! Hilmir knows for sure that this stone represents death, and that activation will require one of the following

- The death of a person or animal in the near vicinity of the stone. Something dead cannot be brought over, the death needs to take place around it.
- Some sort of spell or magic item interacting with the stone that uses necromantic magic.
- Contact with some kind of undead creature.
Nov 16, 2023 9:49 pm
Dreli watches as Korban pantomime's his conveyed info for them and swallows. "Well. It involves the Spirit, if you believe in that sort of thing, but was hoping a sacrifice wouldn't be necessary." She says after seeing the frogman acting out the stabbing.
Nov 17, 2023 12:53 am
OOC:
Are there any creatures in the area we could catch?
Nov 17, 2023 12:56 am
"Dreli do you think you could dig up some worms and bugs with that shovel? I don’t know if killing them will satisfy this stone, but it’s worth a try"
Nov 17, 2023 1:10 am
OOC:
You hear some birds and squirrels, but they are in the wooded area and getting closer would require some saves. However you can definitely expect to find worms and grubs by digging and wouldn't need to go too deep.
When Dreli says "sacrifice" the stone lights up strongly again, same as when Hilmir says "killing".

Dreli looks between Hilmir and Korban, then thrust the blade of the shovel into the ground so that it stands up in front of her. "Do you think worms and bugs will suffice?"
Nov 19, 2023 8:42 pm
"It's worth a shot. I don't like to think what our alternatives are."
Nov 19, 2023 10:33 pm
Korban shrugs after Dreli's comment, and uses the shovel to make a small hole in the ground. They put their fingers in and after a moment come up with a handful of grubs and worms.

Dropping the findings onto the stone, Korban utters a few words under their breath and crushes the grubs beneath their feet. The final stone activates with a bright glow.

Just then, a voice from the trees above says "It’s a shame, the alternatives would have been more fun to watch" and you hear laughter echo through the woods and fade away as the trees shift back to normal, no longer a frightening presence.

Looking around, the path you were walking on is visible once again.
Nov 20, 2023 2:51 pm
Hilmir ignores the voice from the woods and says "Come one let's get a move on. I don't want to linger here any longer."
Nov 20, 2023 9:13 pm
Dreli yanks the shovel out of the ground and starts off down the trail. "I like these woods even less now. If that's possible."
Nov 21, 2023 2:04 am
The rest of your trip back to Elara and Dani goes very smoothly. Before Dreli and Hilmir left, they were given instructions on how to find some rendezvous points the pair of them use when they get separated. After some drawing in the dirt, Korban was able to guide you back a full two days ahead of the deadline.

Elara and Dani were remarkably impressed by your early return, and saw this as a sign that the upcoming mission would be a successful one. A few introductions and a hearty meal later, Dani gives Korban directions on how to get to the temple ruins. Now that the "where" has been established, it is time for the group of you to come up with the "how".

You've brought Korban back to Elara and Dani, and now is it time to plan the expedition to the temple ruins. It is on the other side of the valley, and the path is regularly patrolled by members of The Order. Based on preliminary observations very few of them actually go into the Temple, so what you need right now is some kind of plan that will allow you to get in and out without being noticed.

In each of your next posts, include some idea or strategy that will help the group of you get in and out without running into any of the Robes. You're welcome to be creative with this, and can ask Korban, Elara, or Dani for whatever sort of assistance you'd like (some kind of distraction, building a trap of sorts, acquiring disguises, etc). Certain things may require rolls, but nothing is "off the table" as long as it's not impossible.
Nov 21, 2023 3:11 pm
"Alright, listen up. We need a plan to get to these temple ruins without crossing paths with those Robes from The Order. Here's what I suggest."

"First, we wait for the cover of night. Darkness is our ally, and we'll use the natural shadows provided by the trees to our advantage."

Looking at Elara and Dani, he continues, "Now, for stealth. We'll create makeshift camouflage from local plants and leaves. Elara, you know the flora around here. Identify what we can use. Dani, guide us on crafting effective camouflage. We'll cover ourselves and our gear."

Hilmir then proposes diversionary tactics. "Elara, Dani, create distractions on the outskirts of their patrol routes. Draw their attention away from our path. Controlled fires, imitating animal sounds, whatever it takes. Keep 'em occupied."

He turns to Korban, "And you, my friend, will be our lookout. We'll establish signals, maybe bird calls. If The Order approaches, you signal us in advance. We adjust course or take cover accordingly."

Hilmir emphasizes the need for quiet and efficient movements. "Any questions or suggestions?"
Nov 24, 2023 12:43 am
When Hilmir mentions stealth, Korban takes an exquisite bracelet out of their bag and places it upon their wrist. They then utter a command word and vanish before your eyes.

A couple minutes later, Korban re-appears on the other side of the site. They then point to Hilmir and Dreli, hold up three fingers, and point to the bracelet again with a big smile.
OOC:
The bracelet is a magic item that can be activated once every 24-hours. It can turn up to three individuals invisible (the other two need to be in physical contact with the bracelet wearer), however the length of the effect is variable and based off of a hidden roll. It can be as low as 2 minutes, or as long as 7 minutes (D6, 1=7min, 2=6min, etc). The time is determined when the item is activated, and the players don't know which time they get until they re-appear.
Nov 24, 2023 9:22 pm
"Are we ready to do this..or what?" Dreli asks. "The sooner we get to this temple and discover what may help us to uproot the red-robed creeps, the sooner I can find a way out of these woods."
Nov 24, 2023 9:44 pm
Hilmir gives a firm nod, indicating his readiness for the endeavor.
Nov 25, 2023 2:12 am
OOC:
Just so everyone is on the same page, the temple ruins are actually quite vast and part of the reason Dani wanted a frogman for a guide was because they may be more familiar with any symbols or images that you may come across. As such, she'd strongly recommend taking Korban inside to explore while leaving Elara outside as lookout.

Here is a picture just to get an idea of scale.
https://i.imgur.com/kIoH6sf.jpg

After a bit of discussion it seems like everyone is mostly in agreement. Dani wishes you all the best, but says that only Elara will be able to join for the excursion. "I need to stay in these parts for now, but Elara knows how to get there and will be more than capable of setting up some diversions and staying lookout."

As discussed, the plan is for Hilmir, Dreli, Elara, and Korban to head to the ruins (about two days travel). Elara will setup some fires and use luminescent plants to attract the attention of any Robes guarding the ruins, while Korban uses their Invisibility bracelet on the rest of you allowing you to sneak into the entrance. Elara will stay in the area for a full day, after which she will assume you all captured.

The first day's travel goes well, Elara and Korban get along quite well exchanging knowledge about plants in the area. You all find a good spot for camp and split the evening into four watches.

Roll a DEX and WIL save each, to see how your individual watch goes.
Nov 25, 2023 2:02 pm
Hilmir remains vigilant, scanning the area for any signs of potential encounters.

OOC:
Maybe Hilmir and Dreli are both just becoming one with the woods.
During Hilmir's watch, he hears some movement in the trees that he instantly recognized as those monkey creatures from earlier. Knowing their tactics now and how they prefer to sneak up on people, he doesn't let the noise sway him and looks around evenly. He isn't quite fast enough to make them out, but his method was successful at keeping them away. Unable to find and easy opening, they skitter off to find an easier target.

During Dreli's watch, no creatures get near but she hears some hooting in the distance. She's not sure exactly how far away but it never seemed to be getting closer.
Other than that, the night is uneventful. However half-way through the next day, the group will be entering the area of the woods that the Order patrols.

To determine whether or not you encounter any patrols, we'll use a "Die of Fate" from the book. Contrary to saves, it's 1d6 with 4+ indicating good luck and 3 or under indicating bad luck.

The Robes checkout the disturbances, and Korban uses the bracelet to cast a temporary invisibility charm on Dreli and Hilmir. Unsure how long this charge will last, the three of you hurry towards the ruins to investigate further. Dreli and Korban move silently, but Hilmir's gear not so much.

One of the Robes seems wary of the activity, and upon hearing the commotion from Hilmir unsheaths a short sword and beckons another towards him, "Jarret, watch my back" and slowly begins moving towards the three of you looking for signs or whatever made the noise.
OOC:
The way the invisibility charm works, you remain invisible for the duration of that charge, even if attacking or taking any other action. The other Robes (five or so) are focusing the fire at the moment, but Jarret and the wary one are heading in your general direction. You're about 30ft from the entrance to the Ruins, and these two Robes are about 30ft from you (think of it like a triangle).

If any of that isn't clear feel free to ask clarifying questions.
Nov 26, 2023 7:30 pm
OOC:
How would it work for Hilmir to attack while Korban and Dreli go in the temple? What would I roll, etc...?
Nov 27, 2023 12:57 am
OOC:
Let's do it like this, while Invisible an accompanying DEX save means any action is done quietly and the guards are unaware. So Dreli and Korban going into the temple would trigger a DEX save, if it's a fail someone hears something going in, if it's a pass the Robes are unaware.

As for combat, the weapon die is rolled and the result is taken away from the target's armor and other stats to determine damage. The advantage of Invisibility means that any attacks are upgraded to a 1d12 damage die. Also, while invisible you can only be targeted by an opponent's attack if DEX save is failed in the previous round (meaning they have a good idea approximately where you are). Any attack against an invisible opponent would require a successful STR save or miss wildly.

If the intention is for Hilmir to try and perform sort of a sneak-up coup-de-grace move, this would require both a DEX save and STR save. A success means he goes down clean, a fail on either means it's just a normal attack and 1d12 damage die would be rolled.

Also as a note, while the wary guard has a short sword, you've seen other Robes with spellbooks so keep in mind that a couple of these ones may have spells as well.
Nov 27, 2023 2:14 pm
OOC:
I'm thinking this is the plan:

Hilmir will hold back and wait for Dreli and Korban to enter the temple. If either fail their DEX save, he will spring into action and attempt to incapacitate the guards and/or give Dreli and Korban time to enter the temple unharmed. If they succeed in entering unnoticed, then he will attempt to do the same.

A twig snaps under Dreli's feet momentarily grabbing the attention of both nearby guards. Hilmir uses the opening to step in with a deadly maneuver taking down the one who first noticed them. The other Robe, Jarret, is completely surprised and begins to look around in a panic, unsure where the attack came from.

Just then, with the other Robes focusing on putting out one of the fires, Elara tosses a couple of bags into the flames. They burn in a flash, leaving a blue-colored cloud of smoke behind. One by one, that group of Robes begin collapsing onto the ground.

The only Order member in the area remaining upright is Jarret, who is now absolutely terrified.
Nov 28, 2023 2:06 pm
While Jarret is terrified, Hilmir will try to sneak away into the temple with Dreli and Korban.
Nov 29, 2023 2:56 am
A moment after the ruins are entered, Dreli, Hilmir, and Korban's Invisibility charm wears off. The main room of the temple has a pool of water, complete with lilly pads, and several sculptures along the walls. It would be difficult to see in the dark, but several of the plants glow softly giving everything a bluish-green tinge. Some of the sculptures are in better condition than others, depicting frogmen, humans, and other creatures in great majesty.

https://i.imgur.com/S8NvjNC.jpg
Korban gets emotional as they look around, and wipe tears from their eyes. Inside it is quiet and still, although you'd need to explore a bit farther in to know for sure if you're truly alone.
Nov 29, 2023 2:04 pm
Hilmir looks around for any dangers or signs of where to explore next.
Nov 30, 2023 2:48 am
There are six sculptures: A large bird, an upright dog creature, two frogmen, and two humans. The humans are holding metallic green swords, the bird a metallic green mace, and the dog some metallic green daggers. The frogmen statues aren't holding anything, but there are grooves on their hands where an item could go. The metallic green weapons the other statues are holding also look like they could be removed if someone wanted. There are stone slabs on either side of the room with some additional metallic green weapons, swords, maces, spears, and daggers.

Along one of the walls, Korban finds a carving that depicts a great feast, with many creatures sitting around a large square table. In it are humans, bird creatures, a dog creature, and some frogmen.
Nov 30, 2023 8:45 pm
"Korban if you had to choose a type of weapon to use which would you pick? I think we should try to put a weapon in the frogmen statue hands."
Nov 30, 2023 8:55 pm
Dreli also looks to Korban for the answer. "It does seem to be strange that only the two frogmen are not holding something."
Dec 1, 2023 2:41 am
OOC:
Korban uses a short spear generally, and when Hilmir first encountered the frogmen Korban had a spear and the others wielded large rocks. However, the guards at the frogmen village had short swords.
Korban looks over the weapons and picks up two of the spears, handing one to Hilmir. They place them in each of the slots in the frogman statue hands, and nothing seems to happen.
Dec 1, 2023 2:56 am
Hilmir starts to methodically place all the different weapons he can find in the hands of the frogmen statues.
Dec 1, 2023 10:49 pm
As Hilmir experiments giving different weapons to the frogmen, Korban continues around the temple and studies a few more of the carvings. There seem to be several parts of a story. One depicts the various creatures on opposite sites of a battle, one a fortunate harvest for the frogmen, one the shared construction of a temple, and lastly the great feast with all creatures in attendance. The last one was the one noticed earlier.

After trying every combination, Hilmir's attempt with the weapons doesn't seem to have any effect.
Dec 2, 2023 12:32 am
"This may seem like a silly idea, but what if we take the weapons out of all their hands instead of arming them all?" Dreli suggests.
Dec 2, 2023 12:35 am
Hilmir starts taking the weapons from their hands.
Dec 2, 2023 12:41 am
Dreli assists. If nothing happens, the next thing she can think of is for each of them to take one weapon and continue on into the ruins and see if they should be used elsewhere.
Dec 2, 2023 1:40 am
Korban assists in taking out the weapons as well. When the last one is removed by Dreli, you all hear a deep rumble from the far side of the room and see some of the stones drop into the floor forming a staircase that leads downward into a dark room.
Dec 2, 2023 1:50 am
Standing at a distance Hilmir uses his dark sight binoculars to attempt to notice anything in the room.
Dec 3, 2023 1:52 am
Moving a bit closer but still keeping some distance, and using the binoculars, Hilmir sees an empty room at the bottom of some step. There is some sort of round pedestal in the middle, the bototm of which is faintly pulsing with a dull green glow. There also appear to be some shapes carved into the wall, but Hilmir can't make them out from here, even with the binoculars. The faint light from the pedestal just doesn't reach far enough.
Dec 3, 2023 9:02 pm
Hilmir boldly strides into the room.
Dec 4, 2023 5:53 pm
The pedestal has some ornate carvings and interlaced metals around the top. It also shows signs of damage, especially along three indents that look as though they once housed some kind of stone or gem.

Closer now, Hilmir has a better view of the symbols on the wall. There is a circle with three green dots inside. On the circle’s left, several standing figures. On the right, some trees with several arrows above them, all pointing up. The circle symbol pulses with a soft light, in time with the pedestal on the floor.
Dec 4, 2023 9:28 pm
Dreli follows Hilmir into the room below and studies both the pedestal and the symbols on the wall. She shrugs. "Any ideas?" She asks, glancing to the older man and the frogman. "Looks like something was stolen from the pedestal."
Dec 5, 2023 1:07 am
Korban nods in agreement with Dreli's comment, and takes a moment looking around the room. First staring at the symbols on the wall, and then running their hands over the metallic edging on the pedestal. As they touch the damaged portions, Korban begins to weep. They take a moment to collect themselves, and angrily walk out of the room.

The standing figures are depicted about as tall as the circle, but the trees are depicted as the same size so it may be more of an abstraction than an accurate representation.
Dec 6, 2023 3:17 pm
OOC:
I'm having a hard time picturing the room. (No fault of yours) - Are the standing figures and trees things that can moved and manipulated? It is clear to Hilmir that there are things he can put on the pedestal or is it clear that something is missing from the room?
Dec 6, 2023 3:45 pm
OOC:
Oh no worries, always feel free to ask any clarifying questions like that. The symbols on the wall to the left and right of the circle look almost like they're intended to be labels/instructions. The circle however, upon closer inspection does look almost like a button that could be pressed inward.

The pedestal looks more like a platform than an alter, and there are steps on the side allowing someone to easily walk up. The top is flat, doesn't seem like anything to interact with on there, but the base part with the metal edging has symbols upon it that look vaguely familiar but you can't quite place where you've seen them before.
Let's have each of you roll a WIL save to see if you recall where you've seen the symbols.

Looking over the pedestal again, the symbols along the metal seem strangely familiar. They look close to some of the ones Dreli remembers seeing growing up, but a different dialect— then it dawns on her. They are identical to the glowing symbols she remembers seeing on the Sweepers.

Whatever seemed to be "powering" that pedestal was stolen by The Order... and is what powers the Sweepers.
[ +- ] Sweepers
Dec 7, 2023 5:43 am
"These symbols are like those I have seen on those monsters they call Sweepers." Dreli says aloud to the others. "Whatever was taken from the pedestal is what is powering those things."
Dec 7, 2023 2:37 pm
"Excellent, then all we need is to destroy a sweeper and bring the object back here."
OOC:
Are there any other rooms or objects worth checking out? Now that we've found what's powering the sweepers, Hilmir is curious if there's anything here that could help us figure out how to turn off that power or counteract it in some way.
Dec 8, 2023 2:04 am
There is an additional room at the back of the temple, this was what Korban went to check out when they stormed off. They don't seem angry anymore, just matter-of-factly lay out the items that they found just outside the room. It seems like The Order was using it for some light storage. The contents are as follows:

- 3 Spellbooks (Flare, Illuminate, and Raise Spirit)
- A book with notes about the temple and the pedestal
- 5 portions of dry rations
- 5 waterskins, full
- 18GP
- A pair of extremely well made leather gloves
- A jug of wine
- A stone with an arrow on it (the same kind you saw on the Robes you defeated when you first encountered Dani)
- 2 vials of holy water
- 2 ritual daggers with symbols of The Order upon them
OOC:
Hilmir figures that the book with the notes may have some information in it that may help, but it will take time with better lighting to read and parse through.
Dec 8, 2023 2:47 pm
Turning to Korban and Dreli, Hilmir inquires, "What's your take on our next steps? This book seems significant," he mentions, gesturing towards the book containing notes about the temple and the pedestal. "Maybe we could establish a camp somewhere within this temple to thoroughly explore its contents and see if there's anything valuable?"
Dec 9, 2023 8:27 am
"To my utter disappointment, I think this means someone will have to locate where the missing item is and retrieve it." Dreli offers. "Unless, of course, the stone with the arrow on it would work?"
Dec 9, 2023 1:53 pm
Hilmir places the stone with the arrow on it on the pedestal.
Dec 9, 2023 6:12 pm
Korban seems a bit distracted, they were staring at some of the broken down portions of the temple. When Hilmir asks about next steps, they nod and indicate that figuring out how to destroy the Sweepers and recover the gems will be key. That and research in the book.

Putting the stone on the pedestal doesn't seem to do anything, and Korban shakes their head at mention of camping within the temple. Instead, they suggest taking the book along with a couple of the other items somewhere safe. They point towards the sky a lot and seem worried about being seen if they stay too long.

"Let's exit the temple and inform Elara about what we've discovered. We should delve deeper into investigating this book." Hilmir then makes toward the exit unless anyone disagrees.
Dec 12, 2023 1:37 am
Korban picks up the gloves, and makes some gestures towards Dreli to ensure she isn't interested first. They also grab two of the green metallic weapons, daggers, before making their way to the exit as well.
OOC:
For now, let's say Korban is "holding" the book with the notes since he has more room anyway. However, if anyone wants to take a look through it he wouldn't hesitate to hand it over.
Dec 12, 2023 7:51 am
Dreli shakes her head toward Korban and follows Hilmir out.
Dec 12, 2023 3:35 pm
As the three of you exit the temple, you see Elara searching a Robed body on the ground while another woman stands beside her holding a recently bloodied sword.

The body belongs to the formerly terrified man, from what you can all see no Robes in the area are standing.
Dec 13, 2023 2:30 pm
"Hello, Elara. It seems things have gotten a bit chaotic out here. I trust you're doing alright. And who's your new companion? Did they just emerge from the woods unexpectedly? That seems to be how I've made all my friends in this cursed forest."
Dec 14, 2023 2:22 am
Seeing Hilmir, Dreli, and Korban emerge from the temple ruins, Elara rises and gives a simple wave confirming that the coast is currently clear. "Hilmir, this is..." she pauses realizing that she didn't get a name, or even introduce herself to this new acquaintance "...someone very good with a blade. Helped me take down this one." she adds gesturing to the body before her.

"The other group of them will wake up in about an hour. How did things go in there? Find anything interesting?"
Dec 14, 2023 2:07 pm
Glancing at Elara, "We've made some discoveries. Perhaps we should move to a safer spot and set up camp to discuss what we've found?" Then turning to the newcomer, "And you, my friend, how about sharing a bit about yourself? I've got a delightful tale about the day I had to transport a barrel of apples for a wealthy lady. It's a real treat, I assure you!"
Dec 15, 2023 4:01 am
Wenlan is surprised to have really killed the Robed guy. All the last day's tensions have built up to this. She is shaking a bit. When she sees the newcomers approaching she first raises her sword but as she sees they are friendly she lowers it and swipes the blood off to the tail of the Red cape of her victim.

Hello there..... I am Wenlan..... I've been lost in these woods and in the Robe's village for a couple of days. I guess we have a common enemy at least? Could you tell a bit about what's going on here? Also there were some winged bat creatures back there.... where we.... I mean where I came from.

As she talks, she is looking around the clearing and peeking behind her shoulder.
OOC:
I think Wenlan isn't calling Tanya out just yet. She can make her own decisions and maybe even cover Wenlan if there's to be problems - although she said Wenlan is on her own.

"We, too, have faced the Robes and are actively opposing them. Our exploration of this temple aims to understand the sweepers they employ to control the area. Those winged creatures are indeed a concern that have given us trouble. If you seek insights into the mysteries of these woods, I regret to say we're still discovering them ourselves. I'd be happy to discuss further, but I suggest we relocate from this spot for safety's sake."
Dec 15, 2023 4:23 pm
Another woman, about the same age as Dreli, comes out of the woods with her hands up. She's dressed simply but practically, the sort of garb you'd see a farm-hand wear.

"I'm with her... please don't set me on fire or whatever you did to those guys." She slowly walks closer to the group, adding "The name's Tanya. We just escaped from Valleyview."

"They're going to come for us in the morning," Tanya stops coming forward and glances at the two bloody bodies. "And from the looks of things they're going to come for you too. I've only been in these damn woods a week... is anywhere safe?"
Dec 15, 2023 6:36 pm
Dreli glances over to the fallen Robes and shakes her head. "I am Dreli." She looks to Elara. "Are we just going to leave them like that, so they can then come after us again?"

Responding to Dreli’s question "What do you think we should do with them?"
Dec 16, 2023 1:30 am
OOC:
Just for clarity, think of this area as an oval-shaped clearing in the woods. On the one end, the temple ruins. The group of you are standing in the portion of the clearing infront of the ruins, beside two dead Robes.

Then in the other portion of the clearing (the other half of the oval), there are five Robes on the ground passed out as a result of the smoke bomb that Elara prepared. They are unconscious, but alive.
Elara frowns for a second, then looks sheepishly at the ground between her feet. "I... I don't like killing. Not if I can avoid it. I will, and have, but..." she stops talking and looks over at the group of unconscious Robes for a moment before continuing. "The effects of the smoke will only last another hour or so, then they'll wake up. I won't murder them in their sleep, but I won't stop any of you either."

"I can get us somewhere safe though," she adds trying to recover some pride, "we'd get there by about mid-day."
Dec 16, 2023 9:39 am
Wenlan would be interested to see if any of the bodies would have ranged weapons they are carrying? She might have use for some ranged protection.

She responds to Elara:

I'll vote for safety. Our rest got already intervened and we need to figure out what to do next? May we join you, together we'd be stronger and we could investigate this place further?
Dec 16, 2023 10:58 pm
"Indeed, welcome! The more allies we have, the better. Let's move from this clearing to a safer location." He then starts walking out of the clearing.
Dec 17, 2023 2:00 am
Taking a quick look over the group of Robes, Wenlan finds four throwing daggers on one.
OOC:
They are very thin and can be stacked to take up only one inventory slot, however only one can be thrown each turn. They're D6 damage thrown but only D4 wielded in melee.
Tanya searches as well and finds some rations, and a couple amulets with symbols of The Order upon them but leaves those. She and Korban follow Hilmir out of the clearing when he begins walking.
OOC:
If Dreli does wish to kill the unconscious Robes, or similarly pilfer them for goods, she can if she wishes.

Dec 18, 2023 3:49 pm
Led by the frogman Korban, with Elara's directions, the group is able to get into a deep part of the wood before the sun rises. As there were no survivors, The Order won't find out about the attack on the temple ruins until much later in the day.

You arrive at campsite on the other side of some very large trees with bushes on the other side. It is secluded, and offers fairly good visibility in the directions anyone could approach from. There are logs for sitting on around a firepit, and someone left behind a pot for cooking and some canteens made out of gourds.

Elara puts her pack beside a makeshift rockwall, and says "I think this is the closest site for a while, probably the safest place around for us to crash long enough to figure out where we go from here."
Dec 19, 2023 5:11 am
Finally some rest!

Wenlan explains how she and Tanya have been going all night. They escaped from Valleywiev and their later rest was disturbed by the winged creatures.
Dec 19, 2023 2:51 pm
Hilmir shares his story, recounting how he found himself lost in the forest and was discovered by Korben, the frog person accompanying them. Since then, he has been navigating the woods, encountering the Order only a few times and witnessing a sweeper once. Currently, he is collaborating with Elara to address the Sweeper issue. They believe the Order stole something from an ancient frog people temple to power the Sweepers. Recently, they left the temple with a book, hoping it holds answers to their predicament.
OOC:
Someone should probably look at the book and see what information it has. Most likely Hilmir will not be the person to do that.
Dec 20, 2023 3:28 pm
Seeing a look of confusion on Wenlan's face when Sweepers come up, Tanya explains to Wenlan. "They're these big golems that The Order control, no one is exactly sure how. Those with the power just say it's a matter of faith. They use them to 'sweep' the area and make sure people who show up in these woods have no where to turn but Valleyview."
[ +- ] Sweepers
Korban stands up after a short rest, hands the book from the temple to Hilmir, and then places their hand across their chest and bows. Hilmir would recognize this as the frogman people's gesture of appreciation. Explaining, Korban points to their chest and then another direction indicating that they must go. It would have serious consequences for their whole village if The Order discovered that one of the frogmen was part of this mission. They wave their hand over their eyes and then close them for a moment. Their gestures seem to indicate that they want to head their own way back from here, separating while there are no witnesses.
Dec 21, 2023 4:16 pm
Hilmir nods in understanding, appreciating the gravity of the situation for Korban and their people. He accepts the book with a solemn nod, acknowledging the need for secrecy. Understanding the risks involved, he gestures a hearty farewell.

Hilmir then starts looking through the book.
Dec 22, 2023 4:03 am
Hilmir sees some strange symbols and diagrams throughout the book. Some appear to be sketches of the temple, as well as some of the Sweepers. Elara comes closer and glances over his shoulder, as he flips a few more pages over she says "Wait! What's that?" and points to a drawing in the book. It looks like a stone with an arrow on it, similar to the one found in temple and the one Elara previously took off of the Robes shortly after you met her and Dreli.

Looking this page over more carefully, there are a few short paragraphs in an unfamiliar script, and two drawings of the stones. One is normal, the other appears to be placed inside of a bowl of some kind. Elara takes her stone out of her satchel, and compares it to the page. It is definitely a match.

OOC:
Just to make things clear I'll ask some questions on some bullet points. I'll maybe refrain from reading your past adventures as Wenlan wouldn't know everything and I think it's cool to play that way.
Wenlan asks for the following clarifications:

Do these frogmen have their own village in the forest that the Order knows about?

This temple is an ancient place of worship of the frog people but not in active use?

And finally: there is very probably something that activates these sweepers in the temple. Possibly these stones?

Dreli finds a place to sit down and rest. She drinks some water and idly glances about the area lost in daydreams of what it would be like to find a place outside these woods and forever away from the terrible fanatics that have shaped and ruined her life so far.

OOC:
Answering OOC to help get you up to speed. I think a combination of people would help answer these questions.

Roachtrout says:

Do these frogmen have their own village in the forest that the Order knows about?
The Frogmen have their own village which rarely gets visited by people. Hilmir through his story built a trusting relationship with them and was able to be granted access. I don't know if the Order knows where the village is because the frog people are extremely good at remaining undetected. However, the frog people and the Order have a working agreement "If you leave us alone, we'll leave you alone."
Roachtrout says:
This temple is an ancient place of worship of the frog people but not in active use?
Elara has "hired" Dreli and Hilmir to investigate the temple because she and her group thought it had something to do with the sweepers. It's an ancient sacred site to the frog people, but it's not actively in use. It doesn't look like anything has used it for a long time.
Roachtrout says:
And finally: there is very probably something that activates these sweepers in the temple. Possibly these stones
Hilmir and Dreli discovered an empty pedestal in the temple and they suspect that the Order took something off of it that they're using to power the stones.

Hilmir shows the paragraphs to the group. "Can anyone make sense of this?" he asks.
Dec 22, 2023 7:17 pm
OOC:
I think the OOC answers above are all accurate, just a couple points I want to clarify to ensure we're all on the same page:

- While the temple has not been used as a temple for a while, The Order have been guarding it 24 hours a day for at least as long as it was discovered. A few weeks ago Dani (one of Elara's associates) discovered it on a scouting mission through the area.
- Based on what you saw inside, it seems like The Order was doing some kind of research there. This book appears to be notes for that effort.
- Regarding the pedestal, it's not so much that something was taken off of it as the stones powering the pedestal seem to have been removed (and repurposed to power the Sweepers). You're not sure what the pedestal does, but it is lacking it's power source.

If anyone has any questions about anything else thus far, this is a good place to ask.
Dreli recognizes some of the script from her childhood, it isn't exactly the same but appears to use many of the same roots words. The portions that Hilmir is showing everyone describe some kind of Guide Stones, that activate when placed into a vessel of water.

As she's the only one who seems able to read it, I'll assume Dreli is glancing through it for the next little bit while everyone is figuring out where to go from here. Talk out your plan amongst yourselves, as Dreli finds information in the book relevant to the conversation I'll interject with a translation from the book. (Let me know if that didn't make sense)

Should we attempt to get enough Guidestones to try and power the pedestal again? Should we try to use this information about the water and the Guidestones to stop powering the sweepers? Or something else entirely.

What does everyone think?
Dec 27, 2023 8:57 pm
OOC:
Hilmir's question wasn't said aloud, but I'll add the following as a point of clarification to prevent confusion since I was vague before. The Guide Stones are fairly minor magic items and wouldn't have close to enough power to make the pedestal work again.

From here on out, as a convention Book text = Blue
These Guide Stones are specially attuned to the crystals bestowed to us by the spirits. Activate by placing in water, the Guide Stones will point towards the nearest crystal. When removed from water, the magic quickly dissipates.
Dec 28, 2023 3:03 pm
"Ah so these guide stones will tell us where the sweepers are!" Hilmir exclaims.
OOC:
Provided that what he said is true.
He then adds, "Well, that is something. Unfortunately, I don't believe that this helps us with stopping them. I agree with Wenlen; we should probably make haste out of this area before the Order starts searching for clues." Turning to Elara, he suggests, "Should we discuss this back with your people and begin to make a plan?"

Elara answers Hilmir while starting to make a fire, "It will be several days of travel before we get back there. We staked that place out for a bit and the next guard cycle starts in two days. I think the fastest way for us to get back will be a proper rest now, before the alarm is sounded, and then get as far as we can going straight through the next two days."

Tanya has been listening to the discussion thus far intently, and chimes in with a question. "So if these crystals are needed to power this pedestal... we'd need to destroy a Sweeper to get one? I don't even know if they can be hurt."
OOC:
FYI - Marching through the night like Elara said would result in taking 1 Fatigue, and possibly more if you need to exert yourself at one point and fail a roll. If your inventory is full that would mean dropping an item.

Hearing Hilmir's offer to take watch, Elara responds "I was actually hoping to stay up a bit with Dreli, as long as she's up for it, and look through this book a little more. Why don't you take the middle watch?"

Then, turning to Wenlan, "You stepped in and saved me back there, I'd have no problems trusting you on the last watch if that works."
Dec 30, 2023 9:40 pm
"Sure." Dreli answers Elara. "Glad my familiarity with their language comes in handy as a positive for us."
Dec 31, 2023 9:43 am
Yes, thank you for your trust. I'll rest now, just wake me up for the last watch.
Dec 31, 2023 10:24 pm
As the others get to rest, Elara goes through the book occasionally checking in with Dreli for portions where the diagrams or drawings seemed like they had information about the pedestal, the crystals, the Sweepers, or anything else of note. With Dreli's translation efforts, by the end of their watch they have the following snippets of information:

- Sweepers can only follow one command at a time. When it is satisfied, they fall back on the previous command given (and if that is satisfied the previous, etc).

- Commands can only be given by those who reach a certain rank within The Order. (There is no additional info about the method of command, so you don't know if it is a keyword, magic item, spell, etc)

- Unless given explicit command not to, Sweepers stick to specific paths through the woods and valley over and over again. These "routes" (as the book calls them). There are charts of these paths in this book.

- The book includes a list of spells that are "banned" by use of The Order, their books to be destroyed if any members encounter them to prevent "falling into the wrong hands". All of them seem to be tied to "cold" or "ice".

- The Order seems to believe that those who do not follow their path are angering the spirits of the woods, who will only be satisfied when all inhabitants are sufficiently faithful. In their eyes, when the Sweepers are not needed (because everyone is compliant), the crystals can be returned to the pedestal and the temple finally rebuilt for The Order's use.

The rest of the evening is quiet, and early in the morning you all begin your march back to Dani (Elara's ally) so that you can catch her up on all of this new information (which Elara also shares with the others on the way). By consulting with the maps of the Routes, she is also able to navigate back without running into any of the patrols. The way back is surprisingly smooth after everything you have been through in recent days.

Dani is extremely excited with the results of the mission, and calls all of you into a huddle to decide on where to go from here. She opens up the informal meeting bluntly, "Things are about to get pretty dangerous, if anyone wants out right now, I fully understand. But I fully intend to take these bastards down. After suffering those sorts of losses, they're going to come after us hard so it's now or never."

Once the floor is open for discussion, Hilmir speaks up with a determined expression, "I've been wandering these woods with no clear purpose for too long. If there's a chance to put an end to these Sweepers and bring justice to those who've suffered, count me in. I'm with you, Dani."

Jan 2, 2024 9:52 pm
OOC:
Dani doesn't exactly have a formal plan, just an intention to take down The Order by eliminating their most effective weapon: the Sweepers. She was hoping an investigation of the Temple Ruins could provide some insight into doing so, and believes that the time is right to do so - but the plan on doing so is something she's hoping this discussion could lead to.
Tanya agrees as well, and Dani is encouraged by everyone's agreement. Visibly excited to have you all on board, she continues. "The Order doesn't know who attacked the temple, but they'll probably retaliate against us anyway to assert their authority. Wouldn't want our collective getting any big ideas if word of their casualties got out. We move our sites around so they don't know exactly where we are, but they'll comb the entire area over the next few days."

Tanya chimes in, offering her perspective as someone from Valleyview, a town controlled by The Order. "There aren't a ton of them, less than a hundred total I'd say. The only reason they've been able to maintain control is the Sweepers. The majority go out in patrols during the day, but they all guard the town at night."
Jan 4, 2024 8:29 pm
"Are there any sink holes or pits in these woods large enough to swallow a hundred?" Dreli asks. "It would make things a lot easier, if we could lure them in, then cover them up for good."

Elara thinks for a moment, then shakes her head. "There might be some kind of pocket like that up near the mountain to the north, but nothing I've seen that would handle that many. There's swamps near the frogman village so might be something up there... I'm not very familiar with that area though."

Dani rubs her chin and thinks aloud, "It's not often you see Robes together out here. You only ever see more than three in a group at night when they go into the valley all at once and guard their town, Valleyview. I know there are others who are sympathetic who would join us if they knew we were going for it. I might be able to get thirty, it's long odds but I think we'd have a chance. Not while they have the Sweepers on their side..." An idea comes to her mind, she turns her attention to Dreli. "We might be able to lure a Sweeper to a sink hole or pit though... "

Yes! We should try to capture a sweeper and see if we could get the control of it.

Elara flips the notebook to the pages with the Sweeper routes on it and studies for a moment before speaking. "That... could work. There’s a few areas not too far from these we could trick them into, but they're strong enough to dig themselves out. We'd need to restrain it or immobilize it, at least until we can figure out how to control it. Wait a second..."

She puts the book down, and grabs one of the pots in the campsite putting a few inches of water in the bottom. Then takes out the Guide Stone she picked up earlier and drops it in.

The stone surprisingly floats in the water, and the arrow engraved into the top glows. It rotates until it points towards the south and then stops moving.

"At least finding one won't be a problem."

Hilmir listens attentively to the discussion, nodding in agreement with the proposed plan. When the idea of luring a Sweeper into a sinkhole is brought up, he responds, "A clever plan. If we can control or immobilize a Sweeper, it could be a powerful asset against The Order. Let's make sure we're well-prepared and coordinated. Working together, we might just turn the tide in our favor."

As Elara demonstrates the Guide Stone's ability to point towards the south, Hilmir observes with interest. "Looks like we have a reliable way to track them. This will be crucial for our plan. Well done, Elara. Is there a deep pit that we could drop one into?"

"Once we trap on of these things, how do we incapacitate it?" Dreli wonders aloud. "Do we remove the runestone from it?"

Elara flips the book open to the page with the Sweeper routes, and makes a small mark on two parts of the map. "In this area to the south-west, there's sort of a sudden crater in the ground that would work. There are also some small mountains north of the valley, there are lots of rockfaces there that drop off suddenly into pits." Hilmir would realize that the area in the north is close to where he met Korban.

Dani turns her attention to Dreli, and answers her question. "If you get close enough to a Sweeper you can see the crystal, but hard to get close enough for long enough without getting flattened. We'd need to beat it down pretty good, or slow it down somehow." Then looking at Hilmir and Wenlan, "Getting control of one though... that would change things. That would make this a real war." Her face darkens for a moment, and she quiets as the weight of that implication dawns upon her.

Hilmir issues a determined nod to the group, laying out a plan with clarity. "Let's do this. I'll draw the Sweeper's attention and lead it towards the crater. Once we're close, everyone, do everything you can to force it in. Throw whatever you have, rush at it, push it — we need to get it into that pit. It's risky, but it seems danger is unavoidable in these woods."

Wenlan listens to others, nodding.

Yes, it seems like a good plan!

The others agree as well, and additional details get ironed out as the conversation continues. It's decided that three groups will be formed each responsible for execution on different parts of the plan.

Group A will be led by Elara, and focus on warning others in their collective that The Order will retaliate soon. This will also be a recruitment drive for anyone sympathetic to their cause.

Group B will be led by Dani, and focus on setting up the crater site. They will attempt to loosen some of the ground near the edge so that it breaks away sooner than one would expect, and prepare traps to help knock the Sweeper in and restrain it afterwards.

Group C will be led by Hilmir, and focus on luring a Sweeper to the crater location. The Order will be looking for groups after the temple attack, not individuals, so at least a couple others will be needed to ensure they give chase.

The different groups will continue in different Threads for a bit, unless of course you all pick the same one. Don't worry about balance or numbers or anything, any gaps will be filled with NPCs. Pick what you/your character would be most interested in pursuing.

Sounds like a plan, I'll create some new Threads and then tag you all in once they're up with a reply in here.

Since The Order will also be looking for Tanya and Wenlan after their escape, Tanya volunteers to go along with Hilmir, just in case the Sweepers have been tasked to search for them. All of you decide to rest at this site for the night, before splitting into your different groups in the morning and executing the plan.

Dreli's story will continue in the Thread Warning and Recruitment.

Wenlan's story will continue in the Thread Setting the Trap.

Hilmir's story will continue in the Thread The Bait.

You do not have permission to post in this thread.
