When you fail you can't identify it for another day. You may roll until one of you succeed to see how many days it takes. Meanwhile, you can post where you want to go next in the hexcrawl thread.

Iroven looked ahead at the pass and commented, "Lets move, we are not far from the valley. At least that's what the note said. Reaching the valley will really give the tribe some much needed rest from all the travels."

"Agreed, we can take anything of value and go" Tomas agrees

So you are able to get it on the third day. That means when you enter the next hex. You will find out that it is a scroll of Impart Empathy

Around a narrow bend, the path suddenly ends in a narrow, steep-walled box canyon. Not only is there no pass here, but the icy walls of the canyon are too slick and steep to even consider scaling them. At the snow-covered canyon’s end, an upturned wagon and its contents are spilled across the rocks. Smashed crates and dozens of bones surround the wreckage.
Aug 7, 2024 2:12 pm
Iroven looked at the wreckage and thought about what might have happened here. It had all the sign of a dead end with the sheer unclimbable walls but what was rather strange that the wagon was upturned. Did somekind of accident take place here? Was there a battle?

He walked close to the canyon trying to understand if there was any way to traverse or if there was any hidden passage way. He then returned to the upturned wagon and looked at it closely.

OOC: Rolling survival to find if there is a secret path. Rolling perception to find out how the wagon was upturned? Should this be secret checks?

Rolls

Survival (Wis) - (1d20+6)

(4) + 6 = 10

Perception - (1d20+8)

(8) + 8 = 16

"This seems strange," Koram says, "Perhaps we missed a path back the other way. These must have been the remaining caravan drivers from the pass the other day. They appear to have met an unfortunate end, stuck here in this dead end and unable to turn back."

Iroven sees no obvious passages in the canyon sides. Seeing the wagon up close, you realize it has many clawmarks and there's blood that has soaked into the wood. You don't get to explore more though, as the silence is broken up by a high roar from the mountainside.

Looking up you see a bipedal white furred creature, its fur blending in with the snowy mountain. Your noise seems to have disturbed the creature. Its roar wakes up another creature nearby that also rises with a roar. The other creature is a four limbed animal of some kind.
OOC:
Time to roll initiative.

The large looks up from the ledge, and spits a clump of something hard at Iroven. It hits him in the gut, but not hard enough to do permanent damage. (-4 hp Iroven)

Then it carefully makes its way down the mountainside.

The large, angrier creature takes a large leap and jumps off the mountainside. Landing right in front of Haitih and Iroven with a thud, falling to his knees. With a big roar it raises to its feet. It tries to scare Iroven. Though the fighter stands firm and won’t let himself be scared.
