Chapter 5: Breaking Tusks

Sep 28, 2023 9:25 am
You are able to return to the following with the information you learnt in Red Cat Cave. Wipakoa asks to speak with you.

Warm light from the campfire gives Wipakoa’s face an amber glow. "So, Lost Mammoth Valley," the head scout says with a smile, testing the words as if trying on a new cloak. "The name is a mystery to me. But I know, wherever we go, we will be in good hands with you leading the way."

Absentmindedly rubbing the head of the newborn strapped across her chest, Wipakoa continues, "Along the way, we’d do well to disguise our route as best we can. Yes, hiding the tracks of an entire following is like shearing a mammoth, but the effort might be worth it. By fording rivers or planting false tracks, we might be able to delay them for a few days. Even if it seems like we’re already far ahead of them, we do not know this land. A single wrong move could cause our luck to turn."

"I encourage you to devise ways to delay the Burning Mammoths. But if I may I have a few suggestions," she says with a smile. "We can ford rivers to obscure our tracks, you can lay traps for the Burning Mammoths to stumble into, or plant false tracks to throw off their trail completely."

"I think we can afford a couple of days here before we continue our journey."

She reaches behind her and pulls forward a intricately carved shortbow. "I offer you this. I think it will be more help to you than it will be to me in the coming weeks."
OOC:
She offers you a +1 striking shortbow. In addition, you should have time to transfer runes or "buy" items you would like. Your position as scouts are so important that the following will craft what they can in trade for trade goods. You have also opened a few new hexploration activities which I will post in the Hexploration thread.
Sep 30, 2023 5:20 am
Koram bows his head respectfully. "Thank you, Wipakoa. You honor us." He looks to the others. "I have never been skilled with such a weapon, thus better hands than mine should claim it. We should get rest, then convene and determine how best to proceed while giving the Burning Mammoths the slip."
OOC:
@Furmyr May you clarify - what trade goods? We haven't across any such thing yet, right? so at this point, we should be on the lookout for materials we can trade amongst the Following?

Also, for the hexploration activities, should we be posting our thoughts and decisions in that separate thread instead of here? Thanks!

The bow. I'd have good use for it, if no one else objects...Igbork says.
Then he thinks about their route. Shall we hug the mountains or head straight for and through the plains?

OOC:
I meant merely since the following don't use a cash economy, so all your gold is probably in the form of jewelry or similar tools.

Wipakoa
The next days goes by in a blur as you train end get your stuff crafted. And Wipakoa comes to you.

"I think it is time to move on," she says. "You need to set out a route."
OOC:
You can discuss who gets what gear in the loot thread if need be. But in Norway we have a saying that's "Those who remains silent consents" so I'm guessing no one objects to Igbork taking the bow. You also have a +1 warhammer with a rune that you can transfer or Koram can invest it and it will affect Haitith's attacks. We kind of fast forwarded a bit and skipped over you returning the candlecap or not to the blindheims.
Oct 3, 2023 8:23 pm
OOC:
Yeah, I'd like to move the +1 potency rune to Koram's dagger if everyone's ok with it. Eventually would definitely like to get a striking rune on it too, but I have nowhere near enough money for much of anything. Boosting Haitith's attacks will definitely benefit us in the long run I think.

My Boost Eidolon cantrip increases his damage by +2 per damage die, so once he has a striking rune attached, it'll be +4 damage on that too, which is pretty fun.

Panuaku
You have traveled for days without seeing much of anything except rocks and hills when you one windy day see a familiar face. You come upon one of your tribes hunters, Panuaku.

She greets you with a wave. "Well met. I am out hunting food for the following," she explains. "I have seen spoor indicating three ringhorn rams in the area. Will you join the hunt with me?"
Oct 10, 2023 7:50 pm
Koram nods, dutifully. "What a joyous occasion, scouting the area and having the luck to also help provide sustenance for the following! If you have the trail, Haitith and I would be glad to follow, else perhaps my draconic friend can get a whiff of them.
OOC:
As nobody spoke up to the contrary, I'm going to go ahead and move that +1 potency rune to Koram, off the hammer we found. Koram will have invested the dagger w/ the potency rune during our downtime.

Panuaku
Panuaku lets out a roaring laugh to signify joy. "How joyous indeed! You think your dragon can track them down before me? Let's make it a wager!"

You know Panuaku to be Wipakoa's twin sister, though she is more headstrong with a heated temper that has a tendency to get her in over her head. Despite her brash and fiery personality, she’s a team player with a deep commitment to seeing others succeed—it’s just that she might yell at them a good deal in the process.
Oct 12, 2023 2:36 am
"A wager, you say?!" Koram asks, intrigued. "What kind of wager do you propose, Sister Panuaku?"

"Haha! Yes, that's a good wager!" Panuaku laughs. She is loud, but the moment she starts tracking, she becomes silent and gives a glare and hush to anyone who makes too much noise.
OOC:

Igbork is quickly able to track the ringhorn rams with the help of Koram and Haitith. Panuaku is impressed by your skill. "My sister has taught you well," she whispers to not startle the rams. "You deserve my satchel... After we hunt."

With that she suddenly bolts up with an obsidian dagger in her hand and runs right for the rams.
OOC:
You each get one round of actions to either join her or get off a spell. Depending on how you do, we'll see how many (if any) gets away.

Artesia shrugs and casts daze at one of the rams. If necessary, she will close to within 60 feet.

Panuaku
Between the four of you, you are able to catch up to and fell all three rams.

"Hah! We'll dine well tonight!" Panuaku rejoices once the hunt is over. "A good hunt. And you did well. My sister chose well when she made you head scouts!"

She opens her satchel and emties it content on the ground in front of you. "Hope this helps you in the fights to come."

On the ground you see several items. Inbetween coiled up rope (200 feet in total) you see a professional fishing tackle, a blowgun and a small container containing 20 darts for it. Inspecting closer you realize that 10 of the darts are silver and the last 10 is from cold iron (metal in itself is rare among the following, so this is indeed a great gift).
Oct 25, 2023 8:13 am
Koram grins, "Thank you, Sister. This weapon will be a boon for us." He bends down and picks the contents up, checking with his fellows if they feel keen on sporting the blowgun. If they do not, he will tuck it away on his belt and store the darts safe and close - one could never know when a fiend weak to such metals might spring its head.
Nov 1, 2023 10:22 am
As you get furhter into the spring months the sun starts earlier and earlier. A clear crisp morning as you start reconnoitering the hilly area you find yourself in.

You round a corner and youcan see something in the distance. Coming closer, you eventually realize it's a man lashed to a rock in the hills. His skin is badly burnt. You believe him to be dead until you can hear a quiet sob from him. The man is in obvious pain. You cannot see anyone else about.

Nov 1, 2023 4:45 pm
Artesia cannot stand to see anyone in pain. She approaches the man to see if she can help.
Nov 1, 2023 7:49 pm
Igbork meanwhile scans the area. Who or whatever bound this man may still be around

Rolls

Perception - Scanning the area - (1d20+9)

(6) + 9 = 15

Nov 2, 2023 8:52 am
Artesia walks closer, while Igbork holds his distance. He tries to get an overview of the area, and while he cannot see any people he do se sign that people have been here. The remains of an old campfire isn't even smoking anymore that signs that they've left at least a day ago.

The tied up man is badly hurt, he should probably be dead long ago, but is holding on with pure willpower. Seeing you he looks up and shows you a bloody grin. "Heh. Pakano know you!" he says weakly. "The hate he has for you burns stronger than any flame."

He coughs and sputters, the words taking all his energy as his head bops forward and his eyes close. Artesia is quick to adminster first aid. She is able to stabilize the man who is clearly from the Burning Mammoth following.

Rolls

Artesia: Medicine (Wis) - (1d20+9)

(10) + 9 = 19

Nov 2, 2023 9:21 am
Someone was here, but left at least a day ago. Did the Burning Mammoth manage to cut us off? Igbork says while he scans the area

Pakano... Did his pride poison his soul so that he in fact allied with our enemies? Did he do this to this man? Maybe we can ask him later Igbork says
Nov 3, 2023 11:07 am
When you are certain there are no enemies about, and it's not a trap Artesia expends one of her healing spells to bring the man back to consciousness.

Seeing you, he instictively grabs for his weapon. When he don't find his weapon, he crawls away from you. "No suffering you can put me through that Pakano hasn't already done."
Nov 3, 2023 11:58 pm
"Why? Why did he do these things to you? Did you so grievously wound him?"
Nov 4, 2023 6:38 pm
The man coughs. "I refused to kill one of our own. Pakano accused one of our young scouts of stealing from him. I defended him, and he made us fight, but when I won and refused to take the killing blow, he went incensed," he pauses to take a big sip of a waterskin Artesia has shared with him.

"I don't know how long I have been out here. If it wasn't for your help..." the man goes quiet and starts sobbing.

Artesia puts an arm on his back. "You are safe now," the cleric says.
Nov 5, 2023 2:15 am
Koram sighs, "You made an honorable choice. Just as Pakano perhaps has lost his way, perhaps you have found your own path. We will not force it upon you, but should you desire to rest and heal, we may allow you to seek permission to accompany our Following. You would need abide by our customs, but I assure you we would require no such fights to the death."

Igbork shakes his head. Pakano has always been a hot-headed young man but he has never been cruel.
If you are done resting we'd like to know where the Burning Mammoths are planning to go and why they chose to attack us now... But rest first...
Nov 7, 2023 8:55 am
The man nods and looks at Koram with a grateful look. "I was part of a forward scouting party," he replies to Igbork. "Ivarsa ordered us to get ahead of you and set up traps."

"She told us the story of how your following stole the Primordial Flame from us, and doomed us to fight the demonic hordes alone."
Nov 8, 2023 8:51 am
Koram nods slowly. "We have heard stories too, of times long ago, but who's to say what truths lie where. What matters most is who we are today, and how we plan to act for the future." He steps forward and extends his hand to the man. "-a future that is better than either of our Followings have described the past, I should hope."
Nov 8, 2023 10:49 pm
Igbork nods along. He has nothing of value to add to Koram's wise and compassionate words

Letsua

Letsua
The man introduces himself as Aklep. Eventually you make your way back to the following, and it has become evening by the time you are back. As you bring a tired, limping Aklep into the camp you can hear murmurs and talk as they see him.

Eventually Letsua comes walking over to you. "What is this. We do not have the capacity to take on prisoners."
Nov 10, 2023 5:22 am
"No prisoner," Koram says, "-a guest. He was beaten and left to rot in the weather by one that was once ours." He gives Letsua a knowing look, clearly she would know this was Pakano's work. "His wounds should be cleaned and he should be fed. Then, if he wishes to leave, I would ask he be allowed to do so, as was my word to him. Of course, I defer to the Elders in this matter, but please know my mind." He bows his head respectfully.

Letsua's eyes narrows as he looks Aklep over. "Very well. I trust your judgement," he finally says and nods at you. Then he turns his attention to Aklep. "I am Letsua of Otter House. Welcome to the Broken Tusks. If you behave yourself you will find a home here."
Nov 15, 2023 12:53 pm
You find yourself back into hilly terrain, and you arrive at a particularly treatcherous stretch of rugged hills. It is a foggy day, which only adds to the irritation. The fog has barely started to dissipate in the evening as the sun sets. You are about to set up camp for the night when you notice a light in the distance. It looks like it could be a campfire.
OOC:
As you pass through this hex, the rugged hills adds a day to pass through it so you will not be able to return to your following this night.
Nov 16, 2023 6:14 pm
"We do not know these lands," Koram says, "a traveler might share valuable news. Or, if a threat, it is otherwise our job to mete it out for the Following. We should investigate, but approach first in stealth."
Nov 16, 2023 11:37 pm
Agreed
Igbork crouches down, using shrubs, rocks and pits in order to advance towards the light as obscured as possible

Rolls

Stealth - (1d20+15)

(8) + 15 = 23

Nov 17, 2023 6:40 am
Koram has the same goal as Igbork and follows him closely, matching his movements.
OOC:
Assuming with a bonus like that, Igbork has at least Expert in stealth. If so, Koram will 'Follow the Expert' - again assuming Igbork is an 'expert' in stealth, this will give Koram a +2 circumstance bonus and a +3 proficiency bonus, it looks like. Including the extra +5 in my roll below.

Rolls

Stealth (Dex) - (1d20+12)

(15) + 12 = 27

Nov 17, 2023 9:27 am
OOC:
Igbork is indeed an Expert, but that bonus is way to high it should be a +11. Actually as you're trained in Stealth as well, you already have a +3 proficiency bonus to the skill, so it would be a 24. But still enough to succeed for both of you.
You take a long silent walk into the distance. It takes around thirty minutes walking to get close enough to get a good view of the group. You manage to get on top of a outcropping, and look down to see a group of five Burning Mammoth scouts sitting around a campfire. They are sitting in silence, waiting for a stew that's cooking in a small cauldron above the campfire. Three of them have spears, though two of the men have obsidian axes at their side.
Nov 17, 2023 4:46 pm
Waiting anxiously with the rest of the party, Artesia paces back and forth.
Nov 19, 2023 7:05 pm
Koram looks to Igbork and locks eyes with him. He cocks his head slightly, clearly asking: "Should we?" and holds up 5 digits, shrugging, "Too many?"
Nov 19, 2023 8:20 pm
Igbork furrows his eyebrows and raises his hand Wait...
He ducks down even deeper and crawls towards the camp. He wants to see if he can get close enough to listen to them. Maybe they are talking about their hunt on the Broken Tusks.
On his way closer to the campfire he watches the environment around him. Maybe he can use something around here to attack the camp. A loose rock that he can roll down a hill, a stretch of dry grass that he could light on fire... Something like that
Furmyr says:
OOC:

Yeah sorry I mistyped the roll. It indeed is a +11 XD

In these rocky and inhospitable environments there's sadly little you find that can help. You are however able to catch little snippets of conversation.

"Is it ready soon," one of the men complains.

Another, closer to the stew stirs in it. "If you want raw meat go ahead."

The conversation goes back and forth with complaining when one of the axe wielding men interrupts. "Shut up the two of us. Pakano gave us a mission. Tomorrow we need to set up the ambush. They can't be far behind us."

"Where did he go off to anyway?" one of the other men wonders.

"You never pay attention Kissorartok. He said he had an important mission from Ivarsa and went ahead alone," the axe wielding man sighs in frustration.
Nov 21, 2023 8:01 am
Koram gestures to Igbork, indicating they should return to the others.
Nov 21, 2023 10:56 am
You are able to make your way over to the rest without being noticed. You can plan your next move.

Did you mean to type 'Panako' or did you mistype 'Pakano' ?
This will have a bit of influence on Igbork's plans

OOC:
Meant Pakano of course. So many similar names :P
Nov 22, 2023 5:53 pm
Igbork squats down, grunts and rubs his face.
Pakano truly has chosen to betray us, ordering the Burning Mammoths to ambush us. But now that we know about his plane we can thwart them. Set up a counter ambush...
In the best case we can catch them and ask them about Pakano and this Ivarsa.
Nov 23, 2023 9:10 pm
"We should get the others," Koram whispers. Unless there is dissenting opinion he heads back to Grom and Artesia, Haitith trailing quietly behind.
Nov 29, 2023 12:02 pm
You have no trouble getting unseen back. You need to make a plan for what to do next.
Nov 30, 2023 9:23 am
After filling everyone in on what he and Igbork overheard, Koram suggests they go with Igbork's plan of a counter-ambush. "They will expect us to follow the main path, I think. If we send scouts out and ahead on either side of the path, find where they intend to ambush us, then report back, we can circle around to one side or the other - either try to bypass them entirely, or attack from behind when they're not looking. If lucky, they will have spread themselves thin while waiting to spring their trap."
Dec 1, 2023 10:18 am
Maybe we can stage some sort of distraction. Like strapping scarecrows on wild animals and chasing them along the path. If they attack the scarecrows we attack them from behind.
Or we scout out where they plan to ambush and then do a counter ambush
Dec 2, 2023 10:12 am
"Both solid plans, Igbork. I will follow your lead on this, whichever path you would like to try, we will succeed."
Dec 2, 2023 3:32 pm
Artesia is uncomfortable plotting to cause harm, but knows that it is kill or be killed. "I will follow you," she says to Igbork.

Igbork grunts triumphantly At least this part of the plan went well. We'll need to bind them and then we can mount a scarecrow in their backs and maybe some torches on the horns.
We should find enough reeds to craft them around here.
But first let's catch them...

Together with the others he prepares ropes and throws them around the necks of the goats...
OOC:
Any rolls needed for catching the goats? Or do we succeed because they are sleeping?
Dec 5, 2023 1:36 pm
OOC:
Up to you how you want to handle it. A simple skill check will do, but what skill to use is up to you. Athletics to create a hinder so the suddenly awoken goats have nowhere else to go than against the Burning Mammoths. Intimidation to scare them in the right direction. Nature or Surivial to leverage your knowledge of mountain goats to lure them in the right direction. Or something I haven't even thought of. DC will depend on the skill and what you try, Intimidate would be against the goats Will defense, while Survival would be against the Recall Information DC for example.

Edit: Though thinking a little more of it, I am thinking a skill challenge where each of you get to attempt up to one skill check and each success and failure will give you or lose you a Goat Point. The more points, the more havoc you cause the Burning Mammoths.

Between the four of you, you are able to guide half the goats into the Burning Mammoths' camp. You hear bleats as the goats make a mess of the camp, and you hear the unprepared hunters grab weapons and try to scare away the goats. That's when one of the goats attacks in fear, and you can see at least one of the hunters tumbling down the jagged hillside before they are able to overpower the goats and the hills return to silence.

Artesia’s sling stone goes wide and misses the hunter.

The red hunter steps forward and makes two mighty swings with his axe. His attacks are clumsy and the dragon easily dodges out of the way.

Grom orders Fenris forward to bite at the green hunter. The hunter is an experienced fighter though, and he is able to keep the wolf at bay.

The green hunter returns the favor and slashes wildly at the wolf. The wolf dodges the first hit, but a second hit the wolf in the side, causing the animal companion to let out a pained howl.

The blue hunter follows after Haitih and tries to stab the eidolon with his spear. He is equally as sluggish as his companions and misses the eidolon.

The first of Igbork’s arrows connects with its target.

The red hunter seems to be on his last legs, but have found energy in some kind of rage as he strides to a flanking position on Haitih. Then he makes two strikes with his axe. The first hits with devastating force and Koram can feel the pain through his connection to Haitih.

On the other side of the battlefield Grom draws a javelin and throws it at the green hunter. He hits the hunter in the shoulder, making him stumble. Seeing an opening, Grom orders Fenris to attack. It bites the hunter in the arm and is able to pull him over the edge of the makeshift bridge. Causing the hunter to fall to his death below.

The blue hunter makes three strikes at Haitih, but the eidolon is too hard to hit and is able to dodge all three with hardly any effort.

Then takes the rope from his backpack and binds the unconscious red hunter at his hands and feet.

Looks like we have someone to questions later.

Then he has a look around at the camp for anything useful...
Jan 17, 2024 7:59 am
Looking over the camp you find a few days worth of rations as well as 4 lesser tallow bombs that the hunters had no time to take out and use on you.

Otherwise they seem to travel lightly, probably how they have been able to get ahead of you.

Koram sighs and looks at the man. "We are not murderers. You clearly feel we deserve death, but I am not certain the same could be of you. Tell me, what will you do if we set you free? Here? Now?"

The hunter turns his head as much as he can from his position toward Koram so he can look the summoner in the eyes. "I will hunt you down to the ends of the earth," he growls. "I told Ivarsa I would kill you all or die trying!"
Jan 24, 2024 10:26 am
Koram looks genuinely sad by this and looks to the others. "I fear he makes our decision for us, my friends. I believe we should either tie him up and leave him to the wilderness, or - perhaps the kinder approach - make it quick. I...do not care for either option, but I fear he will hound our steps if we let him go."
Jan 25, 2024 5:06 pm
Artesia sighs heavily. She despised unnecessary slaughter but recognized the wisdom in Koram's words. Left to his own devices, the tribesman would surely follow them with intent to ambush the party or worse, warn his fellows of their approach. She shakes her head, not sure what to do.
Jan 26, 2024 2:01 am
Koram sighs as he sees the looks in his companions' faces. "You all go ahead. I'll take care of this and catch up quick enough." A look of resignations stains his face.
Jan 29, 2024 9:33 am
As the rest of the group turns away the hunter, knowing what is about to happen, starts singing a traditional song about meeting kin in the afterlife. He do not get to sing a lot before his singing is interrupted by a soft splurch as Koram's dagger pierces the hunter's throat. Koram makes sure it goes fast.

You need to decide if you want to progress or head back to warn the following.
Jan 31, 2024 9:06 am
"We should proceed on our journey - much time will be wasted if we return now empty-handed and this will only allow our foes to further catch up," Koram suggests.

Artesia nods her agreement with Koram's suggestion and hustles to prepare.

Late in the afternoon you descent into a valley in the otherwise hilly surroundings. Nothing grows in this desolate valley. Fragments of rusted metal protrude from the churned earth, frozen into furrows over many icy winters. Near the middle of the battlefield stands a small monument: an inverted cone of black basalt about four feet tall, its tip embedded firmly in the earth. The flat, circular side of the cone faces the sky. Atop the cone, three metal battle standards form a tripod that supports a human-sized effigy made of leather and wood. A fine metal shield balances atop the effigy.

Grom has heard of these kinds of places before. The cone of black basalt is a foci that focuses energy from ley lines—natural conduits of raw, cosmic magic. All are exceptionally old, and most have been forgotten, though travelers rediscover them by accident from time to time. This apaku enhances transmutation magic. This one seems to have malfunctioned over time and the magic has corrupted, causing it to animate some of the swords littering the battlefield.

Igbork's slash hits the sword, though it's does little to pass through its natural hardness. Koram's magic missiles connect with the effigy and they seem to have an effect, as the force of the bolts make the creature stagger backwards. The swords start attacking.

The first sword strikes back at Igbork, he also catches the attention of two of the other swords. The first one misses, but the second is able to connect. The last one flies at Haitih however and hits the eidolon.
OOC:
The swords needs to use 2 actions to reach you, and I'll say the last one attacking Igbork was in the opposite direction, so it will take all three.

As Grom weaves the magical energies that goes out from the apaku, he is able to cut one of the strands causing the swords to fall down. The strand animating the effigy seems to be too advanced for Grom's magic to do anything.

Igbork gets in behind the creature and is able to hit with two well aimed slashes of his sword. The second of which makes a big tear in its armor. It seems his slashing weapon is superior to other physical attacks.

Igbork’s magical rays connect. Haitith tries to follow up with a blow, but the effigy barely dodges his blows, even though they have the creature flanked.

Artesia maneuvers deftly and is able to belt the effigy with bone shards without hitting her allies. However, being at the edge of the effect, the effigy is able to dodge the worst of the effect.

Grom’s attacks seem to have little effect on the black basalt cone.

The effigy follows up with one attack at Haitih and two at Igbork. All three connect, making a big gash in Haitith as well as bringing Igbork unconscious.

After several uneventful days of travel you see some standing stones in the distance. While not as large as the biggest stones in Rockloom, they still rise tall as a mammoth and are each wide enough that it would take three or four people to reach around even one.

Coming closer you see that there's a couple of barrows to the north of the standing stones and between the standing stones and the barrow is a stone boulder carved to an almost perfect circle. From a distance it almost looks like a face. Lounging near the standing stones stands a large creature that looks almost like an oversized rodent in a hard carpace shell.

Artesia and Grom can see a few details on the map. First you notice a few scratches shaped like mastodons where your following is currently located. There is a small symbol that could look like the creature guarding the area right in the center of the map which would make it the barrow. To the northwest you see scratches of a cave with a box in it.

To the north, beyond the terrain you see a little scowling face with large ears. And to the northwest beyond the terrain map you see several curved lines that resemble spreading flames.

Artesia is also able to tell that the apaku enhances divination magic. When a creature casts a divination spell within 100 feet of the stone, you figure the stone will turn briefly transparent, like a crystal ball, and the caster should learn a single, enigmatic word connected to the caster’s fate or the spell’s target’s fate (caster’s choice) within the next day.

As Koram and Haitih move the slab out of the way two shapes are revealed inside. At first sight Koram is sure it is two dead bodies, but with slow staggered movement they start shambling towards the entrance. One of them opens its mouth and a gravely and high pitched voice speaks. "Leave this place if you value your life!"

She laughs at your reaction, seemingly oblivious that she could have gotten an arrow for her troubles.

Basically something I haven't focused that much on yet. But it's an NPC that can be brought along on your adventures, if you need help or want the company. Was going to wait until the second book first, but you are more than free to bring along any one of Shaggy, Harbinna and the Glyptodon (need to be commaned in battle) & now Panuaku as well.

Cool! The idea of commanding that big creature is pretty interesting. I bet it can wreck things in the right circumstance - probably more so in open terrain encounters. Very neat through.
Apr 10, 2024 1:07 pm
You spend another few days traveling, until you arrive at the place specified by the map. It takes the better part of an afternoon to find the cave. And you are sure that if you hadn't known about it previously you would never find it. In a small gap between two stones, a small cave opening is hidden.

You have to crawl in one by one, and soon find yourself in a spaceous cave. Along one wall you can see a container roughly the size and shape of a footlocker, but it’s made from some kind of what's hopefully animal bones that have been expertly fastened together using rawhide, sealed with tar, and preserved with treated sap. The container is dry and in good condition, even though it has plainly been abandoned for a long time. It seems to be locked with a lock in the shape of spiral comet.

You can easily recognize the symbol as belonging to the Judge of Souls. The goddess better known in the rest of the world (and to Artesia) as Pharasma.

Torak Frostbourne emerges into the cave's dim glow, his silhouette briefly captured in the threshold's dying light. Standing at six feet with a robust build, his presence demands attention. His weathered skin and crooked nose suggest a history of battle, while his chestnut hair—braided with zoic fetishes and leather—whispers of ancient traditions. His beard, thick and adorned with rings, contrasts with the subtle flutter of feathers. Torak's armor, a blend of iron, steel, and thick leather straps, bears the weight of his lineage and loyalties. His face, smeared with mourning ash, and his attire—a mix of a wolf hide cloak, a necklace with a prominent saber tooth, and scars mapping tales of survival—speak volumes of his tribal heritage and personal sagas.

As he steps forward to greet Koram and the other scouts, who had forewarned the Following of the threat of the Burning Mammoths. Torak nodded to the Following's most notable scouts. explains that Merthig, leader of Musk Ox House, initially tasked him and his rhinoceros Grimm'ghar to guard the rear of their group against the Burning Mammoth raids. However, when Panuaku sought his aid to support the scouts leading the Following, Torak, driven by loyalty and a sense of duty, joined her in tracking the movements of the scouts, ready to lend his strength to their cause.

Torak steps forward, his voice resonating with the gravity of his duty. "Merthig of Musk Ox House tasked Grimm'ghar and me with guarding the Following's flanks against the Burning Mammoth's marauders." The large, broad shouldered warrior, cast a respectful glance towards the elf blooded huntress. "When Panuaku called for aid to support our scouts, I could not refuse. Grimm'ghar and I kept our eyes to the horizon, as she kept her nose to the ground, following the group of you." His eyes passed over the Tusks present, to the cache, and the Spiral that seemed to show some connection to the Judge of Souls.

"This symbol, the mark of the Judge of Souls... It's no mere coincidence it lies here before us. In these times of mourning, as we honor Grandfather Eiwa, what this chest holds could be a sign or tool given by fate itself, meant to aid us or test us on our journey."

Torak nods at Grom's greeting, "Your welcome honors me, and I intend to prove my worth the the Eiwa's chosen Scouts. Grandfather sensed greatness in you," there was a depth of emotion that spoke of the warrior's love of the departed Tusk's leader. "I consider it my duty to protect the Following, and in so doing, yourselves as well."

As the revered druid turned his attention to Torak's companion, the big man's face showed a sense of concern. However, as Grimm'ghar huffs, a warm, humid burst of breath escaping the creature's mouth, then leans forward, affectionately pushing it's massive bulk into Grom's hand. The large man just shook his head in amazement, "Grimm can accidentally crush a man's hand in excitement, however, there are few who can elicit such affection from him. Imek was the first," a pause and a broad smile, "you are, now, the second."

He turned his attention to the cache, before swinging his gaze to the short, flame-haired priestess, "Perhaps Altesia can speak to the spirits, appease them, or tell them of our worth, and our need? The Judge of Spirits will surely hear our call, and recognize our plight."
He watches in shock as Panuaku hammers the Judge's spiral ...

You all start the encounter slowed 1, which means you have only 2 actions for your first round.

Anyone hit by a thread needs to make a DC 22 Will basic save for possible half damage on success (and no damage on a crit success).

As the threads of energy surged through Torak's body, a searing pain tore through his being, leaving behind an indelible mark of spiritual trauma. The damage inflicted upon him manifested as a profound sense of emptiness and exhaustion, as if his very essence had been drained by unseen forces.

"Panuaku, your recklessness has endangered us all!" He gripped her shoulder with a heavy, calloused hand, pulling her back towards the entrance, even as Korum sped through to safety. "You show little regard for the power of the Judge of Souls. Our actions carry weight in her eyes, and now we suffer the consequences."

Torak's concern for Panuaku's well-being is tinged with a hint of frustration as he carries her unconscious form from the cave. Despite his frustration with her earlier actions, he recognizes the urgency of the situation and the need to prioritize their safety.

With a determined resolve, Torak swiftly moves to Panuaku's side, scooping her unconscious form into his arms with a gentleness that belies his imposing stature. As he carries Panuaku from the cave, Torak's thoughts are consumed by a mix of worry for their fallen companion and determination to ensure their group's survival. "We should have shown more respect to the Judge of Souls," Torak mutters under his breath, his tone a mix of exasperation and solemnity. "Perhaps then we wouldn't be in this predicament."
OOC:
Question; Do I take damage this turn, despite being 50 ft away? My previous action was to Stride twice, moving me 50 feet from the cave. However, I am still taking damage, so I have to stride 50 feet back to the cave to pick up Panuaku, so next round I will take 4d6, then I am encumbered, so I will only be able to triple move for 45 feet for another 4d6. Artesia can't remember hearing of Quicklings, but she has heard of Twigjacks. Maladjusted forest denizens, twigjacks form from the cruel and prankish combination of fey and the very woods in which they reside. A twigjack's body is made up of prickly brambles woven with vines. Shaggy, mossy growth, not unlike hair, tops a twigjack's head. Its mouth is just a canyon of splintered and broken sticks bisecting its face. Leaves and sprigs of new growth randomly sprout from the creature's body. Many dense forests on Golarion have at least a handful of twigjacks living in the undergrowth.

While truculent and violent, twigjacks care deeply for what they consider to be their forests. These creatures harass outsiders who delve deep into their wooded domains, forcing back even the most determined explorers, foresters, and travelers, especially when those intruders cut roads through the forest. However, they are not terribly territorial when it comes to other forest creatures. When sylvan creatures, especially fey, rally against an outside threat, twigjacks in the area eagerly arrive to fight, even if they were not invited.

Panuaku
You take your leave of the forest creatures and head on. At nightfall the next day, Panuaku once again catches up to you. This time she's traveling with another familiar face. Iroven Shokar is following her.

"The elders sent us, they were afraid you needed reinforcements now that Igbork took his leave," she says. "They also want to inform you that something weird is going on in camp. Someone added something to the water jugs, and it has taken a bitter taste. Also we have been plagued with accidents all day."
Jun 1, 2024 5:04 pm
Iroven bowed to Panuaku and looked at his new comrades. "Greetings, I have been staying with the Moose house after getting lost in these realms. Nakta took me in and cared for me for which I am eternally grateful. I really want to help the Broken Tusk by providing aid and fixing their equipment. Back many years, ah, I...mean seasons, I used to work with metals and craft weapons of war. Now, I am a shadow of my former self. However, I can gladly help repair your weapons. Back in my place, I was a black...I used to work with metals."

He stopped and looked at the surrounding sadly, "You see, I am grateful to be considered as an ally and a part of Broken Tusks but I am a man of both worlds, lost in my way and searching for a purpose. Maybe this is my destiny and it is probably better not to dwell in the past. I have my shield and my sword, along with my armour. I can lend my skills to the Broken Tusk and fight their enemies. Let's fix the problems, Panuaku is talking about, and perhaps I will find my place in this realm."

Iroven is a broad-shouldered, sturdy man, with a well-kept beard and kind but tired eyes. He is wearing a scratched and worn-out breastplate along with a cloak. The armour has numerous dent marks, but all of them are patched and smoothed out. He is also carrying a shield and strange spear-like weapon with a curved blade on the top. He is carrying a long sword in his belt, which seemed to be polished and oiled to sheen.

Koram clasps Iroven's shoulder, "It is good to see you, brother. You are well met in these treacherous lands. We can use that blade of yours when trouble surely rears its head again."

He frowns at Panuaku's words of the strangeness at camp. "Is the water causing any sickness? I'm sure the elders would worry of poison, just as my mind wanders to that potential. What kind of accidents has the Following been experiencing?"

"Nothing dangerous, just a sour taste," Panuaku says. "Though we can refill easy enough from melting snow from the mountains, it is a heavy job. As you may remember." Koram at least remember one of their first tasks as scouts were to fill water jugs along with Pakano.

"The accidents are stirrups breaking when people try to ride, or a tent strangely falling in on itself," Panuaku continues. "Nothing serious yet, but it has been enough to cause concern."

Panuaku
You hear some rustling in the woods, but Panuaku don't even look towards the sounds. "Come out Tomas," she says. "Say hello to your newest scout."

She turns to Tomas finally as he arrive out of the foliage. "Is the area secure?"
Jun 7, 2024 9:16 pm
On Panuaku's prompting Tomas cautiously walks out of the foliage. Tomas has the build of a robust athlete covered in worn hide armor, rugged furs, and the trappings of nature's reverence. Rustic tools of healing & fresh herbs hang on a rope belt and on his back is a battered wooden shield & a seemingly unused club.

Tomas take a wary moment to observe the hunter and new scouts before cheerfully speaking "Panuaku, as sharp eared as always. The area is clear of threats. It is no wonder why you are the tribe best hunter. It is a great fortune that elder Nakta has sent me to you. She had me away for too long"

Turning to his new comrades, greeting them in turn with a boisterous hug in turn "The elders have spoken of your great deeds. No doubt you have heard stories of me, Tomas. I assure you, only the enemies of the Broken Tusks have to fear my fury. Well, as long as you are respectful of the land, which of course you will be."
Jun 8, 2024 8:33 pm
"Well met, Tomas. I have indeed heard of your prowess, it is unfortunate we have not met until now." He offers a hand in greeting.
Jun 8, 2024 8:39 pm
Taking Koram's hand "Yes well met, you know how it can be. Always off across the barren tundra to get some lichen or something. What is this I have hearing about posion?"
Jun 9, 2024 5:45 pm
Iroven looked at Tomas and nodded, "Well met Tomas. I have been recovering and getting acquainted with everyone so I don't know everyone yet. However, we have ample time now to get to know each other. The situation seems a wary to deserve concern. I suggest we get back to camp and investigate more about it."
Jun 12, 2024 7:58 am
It takes you a few hours to make the trek back to the camp at the edge of the forest, where they have set down for the night. You are immediately brought to the attention of laughter from deeper into the camp.

Going to see what's going on you see several members of the following standing around a man that's dancing around on his own. Though the man don't seem to enjoy the dance or the attention. "I can't control it!" the dancing man calls out.

He is met with laughter, though it seems to have died down as people start realizing this might not be a man being silly.
Jun 16, 2024 8:13 am
Koram quickly grows concerned and passes a glance to the others. "There is a trickster within the camp...if I were to guess, with the descriptions we've been given, some sort of fey creature has targeted the Following." He takes a breath, "Where is our little friend, Shaggy? Perhaps he might have an idea - a different perspective from the rest of us that might lend us aid in solving this riddle."

Artesia nods her agreement with Koram's assessment.

You can hear Shaggy long before you can see him. What at first sounds like thunder is his heavy snoring. He awake with a startle as you enter the tent, and it is hard not to hold back a laugh as you see his face. While he always have been wearing colorful feather's in his beard, someone seems to have taken that as inspiration, as all of his beard have been dyed in different colors, seemingly without rhyme or reason. Some red, some green and even shades of purple litter his face.

He stifles a yawn and looks confused by the looks in your eyes. "What have you come to wake Shaggy for?" he asks in his slow monotone voice. "And what's with the look in your eyes?"
Jun 17, 2024 12:22 am
Koram laughs, "It's good to see you too, friend. There's something weird going on in camp. Strange happenings, tricks being played on people, perhaps magical in nature. We thought you might have some perspective on it - any ideas on what's going on?"

"The tricksters bounds has no limits" Tomas mutters to himself
Jun 19, 2024 12:50 am
"So you as well have been targeted by this strangeness," Koram says. "Would you help us attempt to locate the source of this mischief, Shaggy? I get a feeling some fey has found cause to haunt the Following's steps. Perhaps your knowledge and perspective may help in tracking its source and, perhaps, communicating with them."
Jun 19, 2024 8:26 am
Iroven looked at Shaggy's beard and sighed. "I don't know much about fey tricksters but it surely has taken an interest over us. Is there a peaceful way of dealing with fey creatures? Like some way of making it understand that they should bother someone else?"

Even though they rightly deserve it."
Jun 20, 2024 5:41 pm
"Gifts might be a good way to lure them out?" Tomas says thoughtfully "We can appease them, trick them, or ... use them as beard cleaning sponges when we get ahold them"
Jun 21, 2024 8:33 am
"Hah! I like that thought, Tomas."

"Shaggy, do you speak the fey tongue? Perhaps you could help us draw the creature out, if we set out an offering? Jun 24, 2024 11:38 am

Iroven sighed, "In the past I have been a blacksmith and I crafted armours and weapons of war but I haven't learned the design of snares. I can try to follow someone's direction if they can guide me in how to make one. But, personally I haven't crafted one in my life. Unfortunately, I am inept in this regard."

Iroven bowed to Wipakoa, "I will gladly take your lesson, wise Wipakoa. It seems I lack in this essential skill. I am ready to learn and hopefully contribute in making snares."

Artesia sits quietly, having little to add. She does not know crafting, nor have any insight that might aid them in catching the fey beyond what she has already shared.

A relatively wide, smooth valley stretches between towering peaks. Its walls rise up sharply further away, just at the edge of sight. While it would be impassable during winter due to snow, bursts of green, purple, and yellow flowers decorate the ground. A decrepit wooden wagon has broken down beneath an overhang of rock.

The wagon’s front axle is broken, and the entire vehicle now sags at an angle. You see no other signs of life around it.
Jul 31, 2024 4:39 am

You find a strongbox wedged beneath the driver's seat. Pulling it out, it's obviously the lock is broken as the lid pops open as you handle it. You see inside a note written in Taldane, a superior repair kit, a scroll and a pouch with unknown content.

Around a narrow bend, the path suddenly ends in a narrow, steep-walled box canyon. Not only is there no pass here, but the icy walls of the canyon are too slick and steep to even consider scaling them. "Alright, Haitith, let's get you up to this thing's size!" As Koram's magic works its way through Haitith, the eidolon grows in stature to face the bipedal creature. Haitith gnashes at the enemy with his jaws, then whips his tail at it.

The animal rushes up to Haitih and regurgitates a nasty combination of acid and bits of bones over the eidolon. (Haitith: 11 bludgeoning + 7 acid damage; basic Reflex DC 20 for half, sickened 1 on fail [Sickened 2 on crit fail])

Then it tries to gore Haitih with one of his tusks. It hits and makes a wound in the dragon’s side (Haitith: 11 piercing damage).

Then the big bipedal creature tries to get up, opening himself up to a reactive strike from Iroven. Once up the creature makes two mighty swings with its claws at the fighter in front of it. The first one hits with devastating results, but Iroven is able to keep his wits about him and dodges the second claw. (Iroven: 18 slashing damage)

As the big creature got up from the ground, Iroven let loose with a strike. The creature busy with protecting itself from both Iroven and Tomas can’t see it coming. Then Iroven draws his shield before following up with another swing that hits easily.

The animal tries to dart out of the way of Artesia’s bone spray.

The Haitith lets loose with two blows that the big creature is easily able to dodge.

Tomas sees an opening however, and is able to skewer it with his antler. He follows up with an attempt to trip the large creature, but unable to get a good hold and ends up falling to the ground himself.

The animal goes mad and tramples forward, smashing into Artesia and Koram. (Artesia and Koram must make a DC 20 basic Reflex save or take 6 damage)

The large bipedal creature roars in pain and anger before letting loose with a hard strike at Iroven, before following up with two more strikes at Tomas which the barbarian is able to jump out the way from. (Iroven: 24 damage [can shield block or go to dying 1])
OOC:

Iroven knew that the blow was coming so he raised the shield to block it. However he was not prepared for the tremendous impact which bent and cracked his shield. The massive impact drove the momentum and strained his elbow joints as the pain resonated through his entire body. He knew that if the shield was not there this would have been a fatal injury. But things were getting out of hand. He won't survive much longer with this so he dropped his damaged shield and held the bastard sword with two hand. Gripping his bastard sword tightly, Iroven used his entire strength to swing viciously at the bipedal creature putting all his strength on this one attack.

Arctic ranchers have been breeding wollipeds for hundreds of years, as the gentle creatures take well to domestication and make plentiful, hardy sources of meat, milk, and wool. The creatures also provide sure-footed transport in difficult mountain regions, and they can even be trained for plowing and hauling if necessary. Seeing it a little closer outside combat, you notice this one has lots of scars from old wounds and looks malnourished.

The animal hesitantly approaches Artesia. It sniffs the meat before taking a bite. It spooks a little at Iroven's touch at first, but is quick to lap up Tomas water.

You are able to calm the animal and will eventually bring it into the fold. You think Imek will be delighted at another animal to take care of.

With the animal calmed down, you are able to survey the damage. Most of the wagon and its goods have been destroyed by the elements and the yeti (which you are able to identify the raging creature as once things settle down). But you find one crate the Yeti hasn't had any interest in. It contains 4 golden bracelets (worth 15 gp each) and a peculiar bag. It looks empty, it weighs as if it is empty. But you are able to pull out 500 feet of rope from it. ((Identifying the bag is a DC 19 Arcana, Occult, Nature or Religion check)).

You are unable to find any opening in the pass, and it seems to be a box canyon and dead end.
Aug 26, 2024 1:23 pm
Iroven picked up his cracked, battered shiled and strapped it to his back. It needs serious repairing which he perform back in his tent. The battle with the yeti bruised him and his whole body was aching from it. He then turned to everyone and said, "We should return to camp and circle back. We have wasted precious time in this dead end. We should have followed the river instead of coming here. Besides, I am not feeling that well. I need to rest and visit the healers."

Aug 27, 2024 8:42 am
"That's a fair question, Tomas. One we might not discover the answer to. Perhaps it was smart enough to find the use in such a thing, though it must have driven it by some manner of cruelty to make it behave as it did. Did you see how it calmed down as soon as the bipedal creature was slain? It must have been terrified of it."

Iroven followed others through the narrow pass of the mountains as they trekked to return to entrance of the pass and move the other direction. He had been working on his cracked steel shield, everytime the party made a camp and rested for the day, hoping that he would be able to fix the shield before facing something dangerous again. The superior repair kit also helped in this endeavour. Clanking of hammers could be heard echoing from the tent of Iroven, as he worked on every evening.

The first few attempts were horrendous and almost bent the shield, but at the end of the week long travel, it looked like it was a bit better. It still needed more work and was not really ready to see another fight.

You find yourself in the pass. Hopefully it is Rimecrag Pass which you have been looking for. The pass wraps around a towering, snow-capped peak to the north, hemmed in on both sides by stone. Three big ravens roost on a snowy ledge ten feet above the rocky ground of the pass. The largest cocks its head, parts its beak, and says, "Well, I like the looks of you far better than the last group of noisy, fire-besotted humans. How many more people are you planning to bring through my mountain pass?"
OOC:

As you reply to the raven, her size grows and her shape changes until she stands as a half raven, half woman in front of you.

https://i.imgur.com/YGFFQUq.png

Tomas recalls Shaggy Shemven telling you about a raven lady he fell in love with. You think this creature could be that one, but you cannot recall any more about it.

The lady looks at you with her head crooked. "I don't know. Several moons ago. I don't keep count," she replies. "Keeping count of moons would be folly, how can you stop thinking of how few is left in life."

She shakes her head at how silly it is to count moons. "But they outnumbered you, though not by much." She starts counting you one by one, first Koram, then Haitih, Iroven, Artesia and finally Tomas, as if to prove that she can count. "One, Two, Three, Four, Five. They were one more. A scary leader that tried to kill my flock... for fun. Pakano they called him. I can tell you are different."

You recall the scouts you caught earlier talking about Pakano being sent ahead for a secret mission.
Sep 18, 2024 5:51 pm
"Pakano!" Tomas exclaims "We know him. What is doing besot by fire and attacking rav-en-ishing woman? It doesn't make sense?"

Koram stands with Haitith by his side, holding a look of respect for the raven-woman. It seemed clear she was not there with the intent to harm them or overly disrupt their travel, yet at the same time caution and respect would drive him - for they knew not what magic she might possess. "We are no friends of Pakano. He is a traitor, and a kinslayer. If he has gone ahead through your pass, I worry what sort of trouble he may be preparing as we follow. Was there anything else odd about these travelers, or what they had with them?"

At Tomas's mention of Shaggy, Koram recalls the story their diminutive, fey friend once told them. "Yes, a friend of ours, Shaggy, once told us a story of a woman such as yourself. You don't happen to be the same, are you?"

Iroven's eyebrows furrowed, "Oh no! Pakano got ahead of us? Damn! That means trouble. We need to catch up to him and see what he is upto." He bowed down and spoke, "Great one, we have been travelling for a longtime to reach this pass. However, it looks like our enemy has managed to proceed before us. With your approval and guidance, we can proceed and comprehend them who has done wrong towards you."

OOC:
No reaction or response regarding Shaggy being mentioned?
Koram sighs, "Alright. We appreciate the information you've given us regardless. Is there anything you'd like of us, passing through your land, so as to do so respectfully?" He pauses, then pulls out the gem Shaggy had given him so long ago, a token of their friendship, and holds it up, "Just curious, is this something you recognize?"
Sep 23, 2024 10:58 am
There is no look of recognition from the raven lady. "Don't bother my raven friends," she says. "And that is just a stone. Is shiny."

As you pass by to go deeper into the pass, she calls out again. "Watch out for the avalanche."
OOC:
You can recall that Shemven told the tale that he saw the raven lady, but never mentioned her seeing him.
Sep 23, 2024 5:49 pm
"Of course," Koram says, placing the stone back in his pouch. "Let us go, friends, and see what we can make of Pakano's treachery."
Sep 23, 2024 9:23 pm
Artesia is still entranced by the raven-lady, but follows the others, occasionally looking back to see if she is still there.
Sep 24, 2024 5:03 am
Iroven followed others when they were given the permission, "So, the raven lady warned us about the avalanche. Is there going to be one? We better be careful. Not to mention that even Pakano has beat us in finding the pass. We better be prepared and hasten our pace. Who knows what he is doing here?"
Sep 24, 2024 12:04 pm
As you move on to the south east, the pass takes a low dip. You see a large pool of water that have frozen into a broad sheet of ice between the rocky walls.

Iroven, you notice a movement on a short ledge that stands 10 feet above the ice.

The ledges are 10 feet above the ground. The ice is uneven ground, and you need to make a DC 15 Acrobatics check to move on it. On a success you move as if it's difficult terrain. On a critical success you move normally and on a failure you fail to move, staying stuck in place. And on a critical failure you fall prone.

In addition, when attacked on uneven ground you need to make a DC 15 Reflex save or fall prone.

Anyone beating the enemies highest Initiative of 23 may act first.

One of the burning mammoths is able to jump aside, avoiding the worst of the electric arc. But the other isn’t as prepared for retaliation. Haitith runs down to the rock and starts climbing, getting halfway up the cliffside.

You hear sounds from the east, but see nothing.

Artesia sends two stones flying back at the hunter, and gets two solid hits in. He yelps in pain. "You will pay for that!" he curses at Artesia.

Iroven follows Haitith up the short cliff and is able to climb past the eidolon and get to the top.
OOC:
The DC to scale the cliff is an Athletics check DC 20. On a success you move 5 feet, on a crit success you move all 10 feet and get up in one action. You can roll once and it decides how many actions it takes.

The other grunts in pain from the cold that shoots through his body from Tomas’ spell.

The first hunter rushes forward and tries to push Iroven off the ledge. Iroven stands firm and the hunter ends up falling down on the ground himself. He stands, opening himself up to a reactive strike from Iroven.

The other hunter draws his spear and stabs twice at Haitith. The first stab graces the eidolon, while it deftly dodges the second one.

Iroven quickly knocks the hunter in the face, and while he reels back he draws his sword and with a mighty swing cleaves his enemy in two.

Tomas is able to get up just in time to see the body hit the ground.

Then before he has time to draw his weapon again, he sees Haitith bite the other hunter in the neck, instantly ending his life.
OOC:
The reactive strike would have been with unarmed, so would do a little less damage to green, but that don’t matter considering your normal strike is a critical success.

In any case, the fight is over. Two lucky crits from both Iroven and Haitih made it quick once you got up.

OOC:
Yeah, I was wondering if the reactive strike will have the weapon attack or not. But, since reactive strike can take anytime of the combat turn, I thought that I will spend the actions to draw the sword out and then do it. But, narratively it doesn't make sense. So, unarmed it is.

You are all able to get yourself down and over the ice. Looking around you see an empty camp to the east, and Iroven is able to spot a hidden cave to the north. The pass continues to the north east.
Oct 22, 2024 5:21 am
Iroven pointed at the camp, "Looks like they stayed there. We can check it out. Also, I think there is a cave in the north. Would you all like to explore that? We should take a closer look" He checked all the dead hunters corpse trying to salvage whatever he could find.

The hunters had no gear of note. Leather armors and spears along with normal sling. In the camp you find some rations and some furs for sleeping. While there is no sign of people presently, there are 9 sleeping furs spread around a extinguished firepit. There is no heat left in the firepit.

"A keen observation, Iroven. I imagine our former brother is among them. We should be wary, but I agree checking the cave is a sound idea. If it is safe, it could be a strategic place to fall back to, if needed."
Oct 23, 2024 11:00 am
The hidden cave is situated behind the frozen waterfall, so it's hard to see, but involves climbing to enter so won't be the quickest retreat should it be needed.

Also, the first 15 feet or so you have to squeeze to get through to the cave, which opens into a small 10 by 15 feet cave. It bears evidence of past fires and a few stored goods like a flensing board and some good knives.

In one corner you see the body of a Kellid woman with a wound in her side. The wound seems to have grown infected, and you suspect this is the cause of her death. Her markings do not mark her as a Burning Mammoth.

She is wearing cold weather gear as well as a magical armband woven by overlapping raven feathers (DC 20 Nature to identify). Tucked into the band is a slim vial of brown liquid (DC 19 Nature to identify).
Oct 23, 2024 11:37 am

You can recognize the armband as a Raven Band, an armband that lets you communicate with ravens.
Oct 24, 2024 11:46 pm
"Now this is interesting," Koram says. "If I am assessing this correctly, the magic woven into this armband would allow the wearer to understand the language of Ravens, and it has some limited ability to allow the wearer to speak to them in return as well. Considering the Raven Lady we so recently met, it could be helpful - she did claim this to be her valley, after all."

If nobody else bids for it, Koram fastens the armband around his arm, tightening it snugly.
Oct 29, 2024 3:49 pm
"Maybe we should find some ravens and see what they say?" Tomas inquires "They should be attracted by the fallen Burning Mammoths soon enough"
Oct 29, 2024 4:21 pm
Iroven listened to Koram and said, "This will positively help us in our endeavour here. We need to find out where the other scouts are and hopefully where the Burning Mammoths are. I feel like we are constantly lagging behind and they are reaching us quickly."

You walk down the passage to the north east for a good 15 minutes and eventually the passage turns to the east. An enormous ledge of ice and snow hangs over the pass from the north and west. Three large bonfires blaze on the ground, their emanating heat causing the shelf of snowpack fifty feet above to melt into dribbling rivulets.

The thick sheets of mountain snow audibly groan with each gust of wind that whips through the pass. In the far distance, around a quarter mile distant, standing on the peak of a different mountain, giant humanoid figures are silhouetted against the gray sky.

Pakano
You see four Burning Mammoths that are feeding the fire under the direction of a familiar face. Pakano. He looks in your direction and sneers. "Why if it isn't the traitors! Have you finally come to see the light and to reunite the tribes under Ivarsa's leadership!"
Oct 31, 2024 12:57 pm
Iroven points at Pakano, "Looks like Pakano is planning something with the fires and ice. We better hurry up and leave this place or we might be encased under these melting ice slabs."
OOC:

Pakano screams in pain as one of Tomas’ antlers pierces his shoulder.

Haitith grows larger with each step as the dragon eidolon charges up to Pakano. He snaps at Pakano who gets untangled from the antlers just in time to dodge out of the way.

This leaves Pakano open to an attack from Iroven. He expertly trips up Pakano so he lands on the ground with a thud, before slicing him in the side with a well aimed slice.

He is still in the fight though, and is able to roll out of the way of Artesia’s blast.

The last two hunters drops whatever they are holding and draws clubs before rushing down to help their leader. The furthest of the hunter can just barely reach Tomas, while the other one is able to get close and strike at Tomas once. Though the club bounces off the barbarian’s armor.

Pakano stands up and roars. "Join me in the fight!" he demands of his companions before stepping into a flanking position versus Tomas. He stabs out with his spear and he hits his opponent in the side with a heavy strike.

The first shielded hunter runs around Tomas and stabs at Iroven. He is unable to dodge the blow, and takes another solid hit.

The last shielded hunter rushes at Haitith and tries to stab down the dragon. The spear connects, and Koram can feel the pain through their connection.

Pakano dodges Iroven’s attack as he gets up. "You have to do better than…" he starts, but before he can finish the sentence, the warrior is able to trip up Pakano again and he falls to the ground in an embarrassing display. He screams out in anger and pain as the guisarme slices him.

Iroven turns and tries to repeat his trip attempt on one of the other hunters, but he has wisened up to Iroven’s style and is able to dodge out of the way.

Tomas tries to gore at the grounded Pakano, but he holds up his spear in both hands to parry the antlers, and is able to avoid the attacks.

With his spear busy with the antlers, it leaves him open to an attack from Haitith however.

Suddenly you see a woman teleporting in on top of the hill above you. You have not seen her before, but you recognize her from descriptions you have gotten from your foes, it is Ivarsa, the leader of the Burning Mammoth. She calls out in a booming voice towards the giants in the distance. "Get ready! Take care of the scraps!"

Iroven slashes at Pakano as he stands up. Though he hits, Pakano still stands panting and bleeding. "I will not let it end like this!" he says, spitting up blood. He lashes out desperately at Iroven with his spear. But with blood in his eyes his strike goes wide. He steps out of reach and wipes his brow.

The longshield next to Iroven sees he uses his attention and reaction on Pakano and rushes to the south to Artesia. "Let see you heal this!" he leers as he stabs at her. A powerful hit leaves her hurt. (Crit so 18 damage) Then he raises his shield.

The last longshield stabs two quick stabs at Haitith before raising his own shield. The first stab hits, but the second is a miss.

Iroven didn't let Pakano escape as he rushed forward and thrust his guisarme into him. "Come on Pakano! Did you think, I will let you run away after you took my blood? This is for the Broken Tusk and all those brothers and sisters that you killed!" He looked into the eye of Pakano to make him remember his final vision and then threw him at one side. He then rushed to confront the burning mammoth hunter who struck at Artesia. He swept his guisarme and tried to trip the hunter.

Tomas’ words have a clear effect on the Burnbearer, though he is still able to dodge the barbarian’s attacks.

Artesia lets loose with a bolt of divinity which hits the longshield in front of her.

One of the hunter screams in pain as he’s hit by Koram’s spell. Then Haitih’s attack bounces off one of the other hunters’ shield.

One of the hunter steps and slashes at Tomas twice. The first attack misses, but the second graces the barbarian. (3 damage)

Then the last burnbearer steps as well, putting Tomas in a flanking position. Then he slashes twice at the barbarian as well. Once again Tomas is able to dodge the first strike, but leaves himself open to a devastating thrust afterwards. (Crit: 16 damage)

Meanwhile up on the ridge, you see Ivarsa shake her head in sadness. "Oh Pakano. I had high hopes for you, but you proved weak. I knew I would have to do everything myself!" she calls out to the dying Pakano. She makes arcane gestures with her hands and from them a small ball of fire shoots out at the snowpack right underneath her feet and expands into a much bigger fireball.

Unbelievably, though she’s consumed in flames, Ivarsa emerges from the conflagration unscathed. The icy face of Rimecrag Peak, on the other hand, loosens amid the blast and now looms over the pass, just shy of collapsing entirely. Now, it’s only a matter of moments before the sheet gives way and an avalanche consumes the pass.

The sounds from the west is becoming even louder. Sounds like a horde of people moving quickly in your direction.

The remaining hunters looks shocked at the development and you can see the panic on their faces. Though they still fight on for now. One of the longshields stabs at Haitih twice, but the dragon proves too quick for him and avoids the attacks.

The last longshield stands, once again opening himself up to an attack from Iroven.

Ivarsa, seeing her fireball has done its purpose conjures magic again, and as quickly as she appeared she teleports out of sight. Despite Tomas efforts, he realizes that's its too late to do anything about the fires, the mountain is coming down.

As you think you have the choice of being seperated from the following or be forced into a skirmish with the Burning Mammoths, you see Wipakoa round the corner, behind her is the whole following. The sound of the horde is your own following, coming at an opportune time.

Around you, you see big clumps of ice and snow fall to the ground. Taking all you have to avoid the worst of it. One by one you guide the following, trying to get them all through before it ends in tragedy.

With a snort, the final mammoth emerges from the narrow end of the pass and shakes the snow from her hind leg. A moment of utter silence ensues, as though Rimecrag itself were holding its breath. Then, a small whooshing noise becomes the thunder of a hundred stampeding mammoths as cascades of snow pack the pass, sealing it behind the Broken Tusks.

With the Following through the now-closed pass, Koram continues to urge his brothers and sisters forward. "Come everyone! We must continue to safety before we make camp! The pass may still be unstable!" When he catches up with the others, he pats them on the back, congratulating them on their success - not a single person lost in the fight, in spite of the Burning Mammoths' best efforts. Tonight they would rest, without the fear of their misguided cousins hounding their trail - it would take some time to get through and follow them, of course, and the Broken Tusks could use that respite, no matter how short it may prove to be.
Nov 21, 2024 2:21 pm
Iroven guided the children and the older members of the tribe to a relatively better and safer place where they could make camp without the fear of collapsing ice sheets. He then checked on the elder members and kept a note on whether everyone was alright or needed aid regarding any injury. He then looked forward to the horizon, confident that they had finally been able to outpace the Burning Mammoth without any loss. A sign that things were finally changing for the positive side.

Letsua
"I do not think we need to rush," you hear the voice of Letsua coming up behind you. "It will take the Burning Mammoths weeks, if not months, to dig their way through."

"While I do think we should find out where this canyon eventually leads, that can be done as dawn breaks," he looks back at the following. "We had to march hard to catch up with you and both the people and the animals are in dire need of rest. Here the canyon is wide enough to host us for one night at least."

Panuaku
Panuaku shakes her head in reply. "Koram is right!" she exclaims angrily. "The first of us around the bend saw Ivarsa clear as day. Who's to say she can't repeat her foul deed!"
Nov 23, 2024 3:51 pm
"I'm afraid I'm of two minds on the subject. On the one hand, Ivarsa suffered a defeat which left her stinging. It may be a while before she decides to face us again. "We'll want to do that anyway, but I agree. We may be through the pass, but we have precious little knowledge of the lands ahead. We do not what dangers lie ahead.
