Session 0 and Character creation

Before we begin I have a very important announcement for those who are used to gamersplane atyle of games this will not be a typical game.
Players will be allowed to roll any dice out of combat. PHB rule

Given amount and the influence of reaction abilities a LVL 15 PCs could have I will see to add reaction windows to the combat game peace and other means to allow players interrupt combat at any moment.

If you are still with me after learning the above, go ahead and roll your ability scores 4d6h3 6 times. If you roll terrible you can go for buy instead. And read the rest of character creation rules here

I am thinking of going Changeling Sorcerer/Warlock. Initial draft was kind of a glass cannon but had some healing for utility. We'll see how it goes.

Questions time:

What’s your rules on using Ring of Spell Storing? Can a normal familiar use it? If not, would you allow a familiar like Tressym?

Can we use double-bladed scimitars (if we play an elf)?

Strixhaven and Ravnica books allowed (they’re official, but I know some people hate them)?

In this game anything that does not go directly against 5e rules and is of a benefit to players are fine by me, just please share that when I am surprised "how do you do that"- I may not know all of the lvl 15 PC shenanigans, especially combined with rare items.

I'm wanting the familiar to use the Ring of Spell Storing to cast a buff (Haste for the PC/party), and then it'll hide inside a Bag of Holding. It likely won't do anything else (in battle), as familiars are always super weak.

My eyes were too distracted by the 17 and 16. Okay, yeah, maybe I'm not so sure about those stats lol. Still... might be able to put them in like str and cha maybe. I dunno lol. I'm going point buy for sure. 10 on the starting gold is nice for all the spells and components though.

I guess so far we have a sorlock, a hexblade, and a rogue/wizard?

So we got the blaster and the sneaky sneak roles covered it seems.

My hexblade will be flat out melee. He won’t be able to tank the way a real martial can, since he won’t have the the HP and AC of a real tank, but he’ll dish out damage. I’m also using my rare item to give a Ring of Spell Storing to my familiar, who will cast Haste to the party when possible (warlock only has 3 spell slots per short rest, so may not be able to refill the ring every time).

HP: your choice of either roll here or take average. If you roll there is no going back or re-rolls for 1 or anything, so I suggest take average.

Find Familiar: spell list specific creatures. Mechanically you need to stick with them, but I don't mind if you reflavor them to look different. i.e. turn Owl into Tressym

Party composition: I hope to split you in at least two parties, will see how much players I can get here by the end of the week

All good with me. My main thing is for them to be able to activate the Ring of Spell Storing. If you’re ok with that, that’s all I care about. If not, I’ll have to look for some other method.

Questions about the vessel
1. If I stay inside the vessel 8 hours foes that count towards re-entering it? Yes
2. What are the limit on what I can take into the vessel? (Besides not being able to bring in creatures) muddy carry items
2.a. What size items can be taken inside? Anything I can lift/carry or is touching it enough?
2.b. Assuming I have had this vessel for years could I have added shelving, a ladder, and planking to make a 2nd floor to increase storage space? ( Not really important but I want to make sure how I imagine using it doesn't cause problems when I put that gold to good use )

3. Can I use telepathy with my familiar while inside? Either via the FF spell or Aberrant Mind ? No

I refuse to be your judge's at this lvl 15 game. If you have a question "is it allowed" and can't find answer in the rules then it is allowed. If you can't find limitations - there are none.

You are all experienced players and I trust you to be able to read your feature description to not directly disobey them. Even if you do - it will be on your conscience.

Since GM that you only allow a Tressym (Reskined form an owl), I would rather go with a Cat (Reskined as a Tressym). Obviously this Tressym is a touch crippled as it has wings but can't fly. The Reskinned form an owl version of Tressym has a walk rate of 5' and I really didn't want to have to carry it or have it flying all the time as I doubt it can hover.

I'm looking to have one of my three uncommon magic items to be a Headband of Intellect for my dear Tressym (Reskined Cat) to wear. If it returns to my pocket does it also take with it the Headband? Should it be knocked to '0' and disappears, what happens to the headband?

Would the Tressym (Reskined Cat) with now an 19 INT have any changes? I would imagine that it can now understand Common & Elvish as Congo would surely try to teach it now that it is a genius. LOL. I still plan for Cargo to be smarter. Thinking a 20. :)

GM: Is the following fine for Ability Score Improvement?

Elven Accuracy: Prerequisite: Elf or Half-Elf

The accuracy of elves is legendary, especially that of elf archers and spellcasters. You have uncanny aim with attacks that rely on precision rather than brute force. You gain the following benefits:

Increase your Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma score by 1, to a maximum of 20.

Whenever you have advantage on an attack roll using Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma, you can reroll one of the dice once. (+1 CHA)

I haven't gotten that far. Being 10 level wizard I don't have the super high spells. I hope to get there soon and figure all that out. :)

I’ve got my spell list mostly done, but Warlocks get a whopping 3 slots per short rest, so he won’t be reliable for spells every time. I’ll put up the list in a bit.

Hey y'all! Thanks for having me. I've read through this thread and so far I'm at a loss as to what character to make. My initial thought was tabaxi inquisitive Rogue, but I see that subclass has been taken. I'm not keen on multiclassing. I'm happy to play healer of that's what we need. I'll go looking through some character options to see what speaks to me.

Iif we split into 2 groups another rogue is not bad. As they say, play what you like. Working with/around a teams gaps can be interesting. No rogue, the barbarian just walks down the trapped hall, No tank, everyone stand behind the cleric :)

I've got 8 players so far. Going to split you in two groups of 3-5 players. Each group have their own independent game. I thin we will have normal pbp game and a fast one.
To compensate post frequency the first will be more railroaded and DM will be fast forwarding story to the events that require player actions, while in second I will allow PCs to interrupt and take story off the rails.

Based on what I know @smilery, @Psybermagi, @grifter730 would be prefer frequent story interactions, while (for different reasons) - I would suggest @GeneCortess. @soises. @GuardianRory to be in the railroaded group. But let me know if you think my investigation failed there :)

I'm clueless on @Chloe and @Sarge1967 - which of game peace modes do you think you would prefer?

P.S. This will be complicated for me, but not impossible to later move a player from one group to another if the player desire so

re-skinnng anything is welcome as long as rules defined mechanics stay. While it would be really weird for a dagger to do a Bludgeoning damage and Versatile, it is a magical weapon and magic turns anything weird into explainable, doesn't it?

I would prefer to have the 1/post a day got either way. So keep it both as a minimum and as a maximum.
I have long working days and nights in European time and usually have like a 4-hour window each day to make my posts (European time 20:00-00:00).

I have dropped from games because the game progressed from "talking to an NPC at the market" to "round 2 of combat in a dungeon" during the course of my working day.

So my game pace would be 1/post a day as advertised. Not less, but also not more.

If one of those groups fits this better, I'd prefer that group :)

@DM: I prefer the group that will post a lot. Keeping momentum going is very important to me in pbp game.

I remember the game you ran for us where we were underground fighting those fire lizard guys, and that was a really really fun even though it was railroady, but it was a pretty decent pace, sometimes doing 2-3 posts a day from what I remember.

Congo is a level 5 rogue (inquisitive) & a level 10 wizard (enchanter) as a fisherman & male Half-Drow Elf. He has a winged familiar Tressym that can't fly.

I'm about 50% done with my character sheet. I just need to put in all the spells, and other miscellaneous stuff in the sheet.

My familiar will cast either Haste or Circle of Power, but I tend to go for "the best defense is a strong offense" route, which means I prefer Haste, but if there's another caster in the party that can cast Haste instead, the combo would make the party even more formidable.

Depends how many physical combatants we have in the party I guess. Haste could get up to 3 people an extra attack per round, that's a massive amount of damage spread between 3 folks. It's not required by any means, and as I said, my hexblade can just cast it himself (well, his familiar), so it's not a big deal. It just means he'll be using his concentration on Haste instead of Circle of Power for the party. Just different combat style, defense vs offense. Could always switch it up, as I have both spells anyway.

Plus I'm not sure how the group split will end up.

GM: What do you thing for the cost of below? 2,000gp ?

Tower: 20' dia. 20' tall. two stories. obvious silver glything (Not real) around door at base. One window upstairs that is shuttered and glass. Downstairs is guest room/tower keeper's room. Upstairs is Congo room. The place has simple furnishings. Keeper takes care of tower and surrounding land.

Aw dang. I'm not sure I want to re-write my sheet, but I do like a custom sheet I've found on this site. I just used a standard 5e sheet and didn't think to check about using a custom one. I'll add those notes.

I am currently working on my character.

I use a standard sheet. Yep. I adjusted the skills titles for changes for expertise. As for the tools, I append them on the bottom of the skills area.

Cool. Cargo is RICH with just about 6k gp. Like GM said early, hard to see a wizard spending gold. It appears none of my spells require anything expensive. Armor. LOL. Who needs it.

Cargo is 99% done. I do have to get a name for my crippled Tressym that can't fly. Suggestions?

DM said no additional magic items but as potions of healing are listed in PHB along with general gear so I assume we can buy them.
If not then oh well.
If they are an option then what about other common magic items? Current assumption based on what DM said is no. Those are more setting specific. But still wondering if they can be bought.

Cargo has 10 potions of healing. Best to be ready. Going to have a lot of gold wrapped up in easy to travel gems. Cargo also has a healer kit too.

I do like that simple but direct name 'Morgan' for his familiar. By the way Morgan is a genius kitty. INT 19.

Oh. Cargo can make short term healing elixirs. "Healing Elixir (UA)" spell, but Potion of healing work better for travel. That and his healing kit are about all he can do as far as healing is concerned. He is more a charming rogue/wizard with his Morgan. Uses his wand often. Wand this. Wand that. (Wand is his arcane focus.)

He is generally shunned when he travels. His Half-Drow Elf ness shows up well. Too well. He does better adventuring than with the common people. He is the wizard of the tower. And has Morgan.

Hmm. Didn't think about that. It was on my Wizard spell list from the internet. Have to have the GM say on that. Had to buy an Alchemist's Supplies kit to go with it.

I use "http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/spells:wizard" for my spell research.

It isn't essential to the character. Just an added feature.

Yes please no UA in this game. LVL 15 is already challenging for me to handle even within official rules.

As for saving throws I will not roll them for you. I will only roll ability checks. That means we are still good without custom charsheet if you don't want invest making it good enough. Especially if you have your PC on dndbeyound you could import it with once click as a 5e character sheet.

As soon as you remember to manually add that +1 or something when rolling

Now that I know which group I'm in, @smiley @Psybermagi @Sarge1967 @WhiteDwarf what classes/roles are you guys playing?

I'm a Warlock (Hexblade) 15, with a heavy focus on dishing out massive amount of damage, relying on Haste (cast by his familiar through a Ring of Spell Storing), and Shadow of Moil.

Outside of combat, he's capable-ish as a party face (if no one else wants that role), but he's not actually proficient in the social skills other than Intimidation, so it'd be great if someone else could handle that role. He does have maxed out charisma though. He's also capable of being sneaky, though that would be because he's invisible all day long, not because he's actually stealthy (not proficient in Stealth skill).

I think that about covers it. What are your characters like? (If you want to share.)

Pin is a changeling built for infiltration and escape with some utility, healing, and damage spells as well. Not much for big instant damage but his sorcery lets his allies automatically save from his spells. In combat I do ranged support. Counter Spell, Polymorph, Decintegrate, Creation.

That table has soises listed twice. I think they're on the bottom group, as the top group has 6 players including them.

That could be helpful, but I like having to post that I've read/acknowledged something. That, and building upon others' posts could encourage more engagement. From what I've learned, lack of engagement is the biggest killer of pbp games.

When I will really need players to acknowledge I'll be posting a poll with single answer like acknowledge. Otherwise please do post a short "OK", "acknowledge" or "I'm good" message in a thread if you feel DM or a player could benefit that. It will never hurt to post that.

If you have your character created in "Characters" menu already then just follow game link and find "Submit a Character" section. Choose your character there are submit.

If you scroll up, you can find a table that has our groups. From group Alpha, we lost our Bard. Not sure about the other group, as I'm not in that group.

@Sardis @TheAbyss in order to assign you to a team I would like to ask you answer - how do you feel about:
1. Seldom DM posts story progress too soon and you missed opportunity to contribute to previous scene
2. Seldom Story narrative ignores the action your PC performed (not because of a bad roll but because DM just think it is nor relevant for the story)
3. DM do not let me try alternative solutions after my initial attempted action failed

2. DM is in charge of story progression, so if an action is unimportant, its unimportant.
3. Sometimes I'd like to try alternate solutions, but most times we're probably pressed for time and can't.

1. If the story progresses before I've had opportunity to contribute then it means I haven't been available (given I should be able to post many times a day most days, I don't see this as an issue...but if I miss a day and things move...I'm good with that; as I've played in too many games where the GM sits and waits on all players to post and a week+ goes by before a post moving the game along occurs. Excessively slow pace of game is one of the major death knells of a "play by post" game.

2. If it isn't relevant, it isn't relevant. If relevant actions were being ignored that would be a concern, but if it isn't relevant...ignoring it allows the pace to remain. Will you state in an ooc message that you didn't feel an action relevant? and if not, do you mind receiving a private message seeking simple confirmation of that fact...to eliminate the possibility of an action being overlooked? as that has been a bigger issue for me in the past in games I've played in...GM's overlooking an action vs simply deeming it irrelavent/unnecessary.

3. The DM is the DM. If additional attempts to resolve a problem/challenge are not permitted, so be it. One has to be able to roll with the punches.

I've just failed an insight check with my questions, LOL. OK you can chose a group yourself based on this:
One group will have DM waiting for all players before continue, but compensate less post frequency by railroading (stay close to my original story idea)
In another group I try to adjust or even tailor the story around player actions, but I don't wait for more actions than enough for me to move story forward

Ok looks like I'm putting @Sardis intro a faster group, though due to numerous reasons (mostly due to my vacation) we have not yet established a peace, but I hope it would be a post per day in faster and every other day in slower, but I will try to adopt to player peace.

@WhiteDwarf: In relation to your character as a whole, how significant is your face/persuasion function as I don't want to step on something if it is a primary focus of your character? I have an idea for a slight twist on my Warlock concept that would still focus on ranged Eldritch blast attacks; but would also be very effective in the face department (Changeling with the Charlatan background and the actor feat; he will have performance with a +15 modifier and persuasion/deception/intimidation will all have +19 +20 modifiers and he will have the ability to telepathically speak to any visible creature within 30 feet without need of a shared language as long as they speak a language).

This one time, at band camp, I played a Cleric and made an Arcana check, and the Wizard’s player flamed me about it lol. I wanted to be all like, dude just bc my character’s well-rounded and I’m playing like a champ, don’t take your inner anger out on me lol.

Sounds good! And I've been the guy who unintentional made a character that overlapped another character's "function" and had them blow up on me about it...so I try to be sure before I commit to a character concept.

Side note: I plan to spend some time prettying the character sheet up...but for now, I think all the info is there...still have over 5K of unspent Gold.

It was mentioned much earlier that it's fine if you have unspent gold. You never know when you might need it (bribe, travel expense, etc.)
