The elemental flows forwards then leads the way up a set of stairs. The stairs wind through the tree before returning to stone stairs with a short hall and landing with two doors. The elemental flows through a closed wooden door to the west but when you check it you learn it is stuck and very strong. After serveral concerted efforts you finally pull it open to reveal the elemental already beyond the room, waiting for you beyond a thick wooden Portcullis. The room itself features walls that have been engraved with glowing runes, and several open wooden cages and containers, both of which are grown right out of the tree, are scattered throughout the room.

Rhidon enters slowly and looking around but trying not to touch anything. He's listening for any other movements, wondering if whatever was in the cages is still around. He is also focusing on the glowing runes, trying to see if they're any symbols he's at all familiar with.

Vaun entered next looking around and wondering what the cages held before. He held up his torch to cast a glow through the entire room wondering what else is hiding here. He walked towards all the rune drawing and started to make a mental note of them.

"Interesting", says Barley looking at the runes. He meanders up to one of them and pulls out his rubbings paper, but pauses. "Better read some first, before potentially disturbing a spell", says Barley.

You decipher the script as best you can
Quote:
"Bearer of the Elements, seeker of harmony,
In this room, the past's whispers echo, a tale of woe and mystery.

Elderwood, once bathed in nature's embrace,
A city of art, magic, and a tranquil druid's grace.

The Treeheart, a gift, a beacon of might,
Embraced by the council, bathed in wisdom's light.

Cataclysm struck, demons unleashed their might,
The Treeheart, in fear, unleashed nature's fight.

Council lost, citizens bound to a living death,
Chaos and fear, their last fleeting breath.

Four elements entwined, seek the emissaries near,
Earth, water, fire, air, with them, dispel the fear.

Seed in the earth, let it take root and bloom,
Melt the ice, let water flow and consume.

Subdue the flame, its dance to a tranquil tune,
Control the winds, in harmony they croon.

Emissaries observe, their reactions guide,
A symphony of elements, where destinies coincide.

Harmonious blend, the doorway shall reveal,
The Treeheart's gratitude, your efforts it shall feel.

Restore the balance, calm the ancient soul,
In the heart of the Tree, let harmony take control."

May the elements guide your path, brave adventurers.

Could this mean there are 3 other creatures like that? Beruga says gesturing at the water elemental.

Seed the earth, melt the ice, subdue the flame, control the winds... I think the ice part might have been done for us. And seeding the earth could possibly refer to the seeds that dropped from the ceiling in the tile room. But I have yet to encounter a flame in this city that needs to be subdued, or winds that need to be controlled.

What size and shape are the cages and containers? Do they look like they were made for a particular purpose? (I'll make a roll if necessary to discern)

Discerning purpose of containers and cages - (2d6)

Beruga investigates the room and notices there are 6 cages build into the wall. They are not large enough to hold the elemental but as she inspects them she notices each has an odd smell sniff . . . sniff One smells burned, another like freshly churned dirt, another like a fresh cool breeze, one like the ocean, but the last two confuse her. The scents are unlike any she has smelled before. One reminds her of deep underground or dead creatures and the other like a spring day only without any smell of rain or plants. Odd.

The cages themselves are quite simple with several clasps to hold a simple board, engraven with runes, in place at the top. The walls are formed by branches or roots the thickness of a finger but smaller growths criss cross between the bars forming a mesh that encloses them entirely.

There are 12 wooden containers that look and feel like live wood with their "lids" being formed by thick leather leaf structures. Not finding any danger Beruga sniffs then nuzles aside the covering and peers within. Inside she spies a small model of a windmill. Looking into the other containers you find:
1 clockwork windmill, seeds, 2 small twigs, 3 a bowl with ice chunks, 4 empty box with a smoldering ember embedded at the base, 5 sand, 6 empty box that smells of lightnings and your hand tingles when you open the flat, 7 set of bones, 8 pouch of dust, 9 a pouch of luminous crystals, 10 set of pipes tied together with string so they dangle like chimes, 11 a pile of dead leaves that crumble at your touch, 12 a pitcher of water.
Jan 21, 2024 2:15 am
"I think you're right Beruga, sounds like the emissaries are elementals, and some of the script almost like instructions perhaps to do with these items? 'Control the winds, in harmony they croon' sounds like it may involve the set of pipes."
Jan 21, 2024 4:28 pm
"Before we go looking for elementals, may I see that clockwork windmill? I would like to wind it up and place it in one of these cages. Create a wind in it, if you will. Which one do you think?", says Barley gesturing for the clockwork windmill.
OOC:
I think this is more of a "5th Element" style puzzle. Is anyone familiar with that movie? There is a puzzle that involves activating pillars with there respective elements in the movie (sorry for spoilers). Before we leave this room could we try turning on the windmill and placing it in the breeze container, setting a small fire in the burnt smelling one, ect. If it doesn't work, we go elemental hunting!

I had a thought, the Martial artist once a day trait, can I reset that or did we not rest long enough? I believe I used it in the fight with the imps.

Vaun looked around the different cages with excitement, "This is fascinating; a puzzle for us to piece together. Looks like Beruga is right, we have to place all the different elements into these cages based on the instructions. We already understand that we have to plant the seed and water it to let it grow and bloom. We can use the dried leaves and the ember to light up a fire and maybe use the windmill and the wind chime to make the wind croon. However, the other two cages baffle me? Could one represent the finality of death? We have bones and dust in these boxes. Maybe we bury the bones with dust?"

He scratched his chin and tried to understand the purpose of the final cage that smelled like spring.

I didn't think of that consciously but I know what you are talking about with 5th element
I thought the futuristic 3D biological printer was cool

OOC:
I added a check box to that trait and we will assume you have it available for use at this time.
Vaun examine the "spring" cage and smells nothing but your fingers tingles oddly when you touch it.
OOC:
I will confirm guesses on a 4 but that's not good enough to glean additional information.
Feel free to exchange ideas or try things out in character and I will let you know. Ohh just realized this is also a bit like Mastermind the logic game.

"Well lets try one shall we?", Barley winds up the clockwork windmill and places it into the vessel that smell like a fresh cool breeze. He then hangs the set of chimes in front it. Finally he takes the ember and puts it into the one that smells burned. He turns the windmill so the breeze blows through the chimes and across the top of the ember.
"We'll probably need to feed the fire with the twigs, but we should wait until last to do that. Unless the burn to quick, but let's see if this does anything.", says Barley.
OOC:
@Psybermagi - Thanks for adding the checkmark! The 3d printer was cool in that movie.

Even though the wind vessel and burnt vessel are different containers, Barely would like to try and use the windmill blowing from within it's vessel to play the chimes and to stoke the ember in it's vessel.

When the wind chimes are placed in the cage with the wound up windmill as gentle breeze from the windmill causes the chimes to hum and whistle softly. a pale white/green glow fills the cage.

Vaun looked at the glow with excitement, "Barley, I think this one is correctly incanted and active. Let's try the other ones." He took the seed and embedded it on the cage with freshly churned dirt. He then covered the seed with more dust and watered the seed from the bowl of water.

Observing the fascinating construction before him, Rhidon contemplates aloud: "Perhaps the luminous stones have something to do with this static box, both seem like containers of stored potential energy."

He takes a moment to study the crystal to see if he can determine anything else about its properties.

Barley takes the bowl of ice and the twigs.

"Alright, we solved one of them! Vaun, maybe pour a little water over the seeds? I'm going to continue with this burnt smelling box. Starting a fire feels correct. I think we might be able to use it to melt the ice as well. Rhidon, I think you maybe right about those crystals.", he says.

Gently, he places one of the twigs on the embers and blows on it to stoke the fire. He then places the bowl of ice over the flame.
OOC:
Oh, I misread that. I thought the ember was part of another box in the item list. If starting the fire works, Barley will add the other twig.
