Roald gets back into bed, but can't find the right position. After half an hour of twisting and turning he opens his eyes and stares at the window. The faint moonlight shining through the trees casts shadows on the window.
what is that....
For a moment he hesitates to wake up his companions in the room
OOC:
I assume at this time he is not sleeping alone anymore
no... They need their rest
He crawls out of the bed and opens the window to take a good look at the balcony.
OOC:
Roald stays in the room at this time, being careful not to get locked out as Wayne did.
Feb 22, 2024 6:19 pm
Albert chuckles at yet another one of Wayne's jokes and whispers back to go along with it. "Haha, yeah! And those small piles of dirt I saw outside must be where they buried the remains!" He gives him a wink as if to say 'It will take more than that to fool me!'.

"Well, I should probably head to bed myself." He says after finishing his drink.

Wayne looks disturbed by your mention of buried bodies, or by your tone. "Yeah. Good night." He says when you finish drinking and head up to you room. "Don't let the bed bugger bite."

He stands with you and peers nervously out the front door at the last remnants of evening light.

A while later...

- Roald -

What's wrong with the balcony is that this building has no balcony upstairs... What could 'Wayne' possibly have been standing on?

Your contemplation of the question is interrupted by a soft shout, quickly cut off, from somewhere else in the room. The hairs on the back of your neck stand up, and it is not from the cold of the mist pouring in through the open window.

What do you do?

Albert is left a bit confused after Wayne doesn't go along with his mentioning of bodies. He was pretty sure they were just joking around. Maybe he misread the situation? With a bit of guilt he heads to his room. Looks like one room has Roald and Daryl, the other Humphrey and Theo. He decides to join Theo's room and tries his best not to disturb them when he lays down for the night.

Just before drifting off, he looks up at the window again. It's closed. The room smells a bit sweaty, but maybe it's best to heed the warning, even if it was just a joke. You never know.

It doesn't take him long to fall asleep.
Feb 26, 2024 12:58 pm
"huh???" Roald looks out of the window and sees... nothing. There is no balcony on the other side of the wall. Confused he stares outside for a moment when a soft shout makes him turn around instantly.
"DARYL!" Roald almost shouts from being startled. Both mist and moonlight coming in through the window give the room an eerie sight.
Feb 26, 2024 1:19 pm
Why does this always happen to me? Albert thinks after waking up in the middle of the night. Having to get up at night to empty his bladder had been becoming more and more frequent. I must be getting old. Goes through his mind, remembering how his father used to have the same issue. Grumbling quietly, he gets up and puts on enough clothing to head to the outhouse.

As he walks along the corridor of the inn he seems to hear some stumbling noises coming from Roald and Daryl's room. Hmm... Must be having trouble sleeping too. I'd feel a bit safer going to the outhouse with someone else. With no ill intentions, Albert decides to have a quick listen at the door, just to see if one of his companions would be joining him.

OOC:
Oops. I meant to say 'a soft shout, quickly cut off, from somewhere else in the house'. But too late. Poor Daryl has been bitten but a typo! :)
- Roald -

You see a thrashing in Daryl's bed, as though he is having a nightmare... or fighting with something in his sleep. The inflowing mist is thick around the base of his bed and tendrils creep up to probe at the blankets top and bottom.

What do you do?
OOC:
@Airshark: Does 'almost shouts' means you almost make a sound, or the sound is almost a shout? Would Albert, listening at your door, hear and come in to check?

@TheGenerator: You are also welcome to peer in on your quest to find a outhouse-expedition-partner. Unless we want to keep the characters appart.
Feb 26, 2024 2:58 pm
Not seeing what Daryl is struggling with Roald suspects the mist being an evil force entering the room. He quickly slams the window shut.
OOC:
Leaving the opportunity to break the glass because of the force, your choice.
"DARYL! WAKE UP"

He launches himself towards the bed to save his friend from the mist. Roald grabs a hold of Daryl's leg and starts pulling. Only then he sees the rodent-like animal on Daryl's chest. It is too big to be a squirl or a rat, has a lot of fur and it's claws reflect the moonlight as it lashes out at Daryl's face. Daryl tries to push the critter away and simultaniously protect his head.

Roald lets go of Daryl's leg and takes his own blanket. He jumps on top of the animal trying to catch the thing with his blanket.
OOC:
I'll add a dex roll. But in my opinion Roald will only succeed on a high roll:10+? since the thing is very fast. At this point he is probably regretting he closed the window, now the animal has no escape route.

Rolls

catching a koala - (2d6+1)

(41) + 1 = 6

OOC:
Airshark says:
... opportunity to break the glass because of the force ...
OK. You, quite literally, asked for it... And then followed up by rolling a 6. :)
- Roald -

At the force with which you slammed the window closed a windowpane rattles loose and slips, forming a small, unnoticed gap in one corner, but there are other problems to deal with right now.

Daryl wakes with a start, kicking at the hand groping at his foot and flailing at the thing in his face, the wind of his actions cause the mist-tendrils to retreat.

You are pretty sure you caught the critter in the blanket, but a moment later the bulge deflates and the beast, seeming to have passed through the blanket, slashes at your face. Where its claws strike skin you feel cold, this comes as a surprise compared to the hot flash of blood and pain you expected.

Albert hears a loud bang, followed by the rattling of a window and multiple shouts from Roald. Something is definitely wrong here! He pulls at the door in a hurry to see what's going on inside. A waterfall of mist quickly billows out around his ankles. "What the?" Then he spots what's happening with his friends. A shadowy shape is attacking Roald. At first he thinks it's a badger or raccoon, but no, this is not something natural.

Why didn't he bring his staff with him? It's only one room away, but seconds can be ages in Roald's situation. Is this thing undead? He has no idea, but calling upon Raynor is the most powerful thing he can think of right now. Unable to figure out anything better, he unbuckles his belt to use it as a whip against the thing.

With a booming voice that he hopes will cause the creature to recoil, he lashes out with the belt at it. "In Raynor's name BE GONE evil creature!"
OOC:
Edit: Thank you Raynor! :)

Rolls

Attack the creature (+str?) (using ability 'Turn') - (2d6+1)

(66) + 1 = 13

OOC:
Is it 'undead'? Let's ask the Fates. Only a 5 or 6 makes it true.

Rolls

Die of Fate (Undead?) - (1d6)

(3) = 3

This does not feel like the undead you have faced before, that part of your power slips off from the creature.

Your belt, wielded as a weapon in Raynor's name, ignites with radiant light and splits the thing in twain.

The mist on the floor glows pearly white as the light of your belt-whip fades. Does it appear to flow out the door faster than before?

Daryl gasps in relief. "What was that?" He says, rubbing at his face where it was 'scratched'.

- Roald -

Where the creature 'scratched' your face it feels numb, and cold, and wet.
Feb 26, 2024 10:20 pm
"What's going on? Are you guys alright?" So many questions to be asked but first things first. He walks into the room, still weary about the mist, to check on his friends.
Feb 26, 2024 10:25 pm
"I don't know. I was sleeping." Daryl says. "I think I had a bad dream?" He looks around and finds no sign of anything that could have attacked him, the 'badger' having melted at Albert's blow.

"Am I bleeding?" He asks, patting at his face.

In the ghostly light of the most-full moon you can not see any signs of harm to his or Roald's faces. But Roald still feels like he is bleeding coldly.

Roald touches his face.

''this is not right Albert. It's still numb and feels cold.''
He then switches his attention to the mist.
'' and this damned mist doesn't make it any warmer''

He takes a good look at the crack in the window where the mist still flows through. He rips a piece of his blanket and stuffs it in the crack.

'' Let's check on the others.''
Feb 27, 2024 10:42 pm
The mist-flow slows and appears to stop after Roald stuffs the crack with blanket. The floor is still covered with the faintly glowing substance.

Outside the room, away from the moonlight coming in through the window, it is hard to see the mist in the dark.
OOC:
The mist is only visible if you take a moment to light a candle from the bedside table. Else ignore that part of the description. :)

Moving with a lit candle is slow.
In Albert's room, Theo and Humphrey are still sleeping peacefully, oblivious to the mist floating around the legs of their beds at ankle height. It appears you stopped the inflow of mist before it reached a level, heavy as it is, to climb their beds.

"This fog came from outside? It doesn't seem to be going away." Albert kicks the fog, trying to disperse it.

When Roald mentions the other room, he says "You go check, let me what's going on with Daryl."
Albert takes the candle to get a better look at Daryl's face. Maybe he can see a scratch or bruise in the candle light.

- Albert -

The mist does seem to be draining away, it is now just a thin covering over the carpet.

"Is it bad?!" Daryl asks desperately touching his face. "Am I going to die?!"

You can not see anything wrong with his face. He appears completely uninjured from what you can tell. He is probably at more danger of hurting himself with his probing.
