Against the cult: the Forest Ruin (1.5)

Heh! Yes my friend, I will cover you, replies the knightly fellow. Sword drawn and blade surely shimmering in torchlight, Al proceeds just behind his half-sized friend. Eyes piercing darkness, thanks to his left-handed torch!
Jan 31, 2024 2:08 pm
Theran, seeing the strange light and hearing Joseph's comment, calls out, "Let's focus over here for now! We have more bodies!"

With that, he moves to follow Albertus into the room, casting Shillelagh on his staff again for good measure. The wood elf can't help it, but after the debacle on the second floor he's tense and quite on-edge at the prospect of moving into a room with so many bodies.
Jan 31, 2024 5:23 pm
Aanbo heeds the call, moving towards the now-opened door.
Jan 31, 2024 11:32 pm
Kragga follows the others toward the door, keeping at the back of the group. With the injuries he sustained on the stairs, he's a liability at the front. Commenting on the bodies that the others ahead of him see, he opines "A great tragedy befell this place, but perhaps one of their own making."
Jan 31, 2024 11:49 pm
Al turns knightly attention to his half-orc friend Kragga.

You’ve been brave in many battles, and will be in more to come. But you are hurting, and you need healing. So that you will face danger ahead without worry!

And then, handing his torch to a friend at least temporarily, our paladinic fellow lays gauntleted hands upon ol’ Kragga!
OOC:
Lay On Hands, healing 5hp to Kragga.

Joseph steps into the room, which he sees now is illuminated enough in the strange candlelight to see without the torches. All four walls are covered with the murals of Pae that have been defaced with runes drawn in blood. Theran calls the others over, and Aanbo follows. Kragga limps up, too, and Albertus hands his torch to Theran so he can impart the healing touch of Pelor upon the wizard, who regains 5 HP.

...but at the same time that Joseph steps into the room, the table at the far end of the room bearing the purple skull candles and various other items glows a gleaming, shimmering gold! Streams of golden energy flow forth into all of the bodies on the floor, which rise to their feet! The kneeling figure dressed in the golden robes rises and turns to face the halfling, revealing a face of desiccated skin stretched tight over a skull, the eyes shrunken and wasted.
https://i.imgur.com/YJ4e5W8m.png
It is noteworthy not only for its golden robes, but for the fact that the figure is not perfectly preserved like the other bodies. The nearly-empty sockets seem to stare at you, then it turns and reaches under the table, hauling forth a shining golden mace.

Aanbo backs away from the door, clearing the way for others. "Force them to come through the door one at a time!" he advises. He remains wary of the unique figure unlike the others, wondering what that one will do.

OOC:
Now at 7/8 hp, thanks @WhiteDwarf!
Kragga feels Albertus's divine energy pass through him, feels the light knit his torn muscles back together. But there is no time to thank him, as the bodies begin lurching toward the door. As the company scrambles to form ranks and guard the door, he pulls out his arcane focus, ready to strike with the arcane arts.
OOC:
Will cast firebolt at the most convenient, exposed target. Adding in a roll just in case, looks like it'll be a miss.

Xana sneaks up beside Joseph and attempts to peer in the room as well. Seeing nothing that rings any alarms just yet, she holds an action to blast anyone who tries to attack the group, whether a body or anyone else who jumps out of their hiding spots. Can never be too safe!

Aanbo, Albertus, please roll your attacks and damage when you declare them in future. Roll them now, as these animated bodies are following Joseph back through the door.

That's assuming that Theran doesn't remain in the doorway. That would result in him getting dogpiled by a swarm of these guys. Roll initiative and tell us what Theran is doing, @MaJunior.

Roll initiative and tell us what Ogbar is doing, @Naatkinson.

Combat erupts again in the Forest Ruin as golden light animates several bodies that move toward both doors!

Aanbo braces himself, and prepares to attack the first shambling corpse that comes through the doorway.
Theran tosses his torch into the middle of the southern room, then prepares to whack the first of the bodies to come through the door.
Similarly, Albertus raises his torch and his sword, preparing to hack down the first creature to move through the door.
Kragga, ever ready with magic, intones "Magna globi ingis!" and his hand is engulfed in flames. Then, with a flick of his wrist, he flings the flame at the first murdered white-robed human who approaches, who we will call "Ace." Ace takes 5 fire damage!
A split-second later, Xana follows the flames with a blast of baleful energy of her own, punching into Ace's approaching body for 9 force damage!
Joseph steps back through the doorway, gripping his sword and dagger tightly.
The gold-robed figure by the glowing altar at the southern edge of the room waves his mace and mutters in a voice ravaged by many screams over many centuries: "Furcht mich!" Joseph, standing in the doorway, must attempt a DC11 WIS saving throw.
Ogbar makes a couple of preparatory swings with his axe and starts to move forward, but then the western door opens and three more moving murder victims (who we will call Fern, Gil, and Hip) barge through. Ogbar steps up to meet the one in front, Gil. "There's more over here, everyone!" Ogbar bites the inside of his cheek and his blood boils as the rage descends over his brain. He charges forward with his axe and hacks Gil again and again, for a total of 12 slashing damage! (updated from @naatkinson's later post).
Several others rush the other, eastern door. As soon as Ace steps through the door, it triggers the attacks from Aanbo, Theran, and Albertus.
Aanbo lands a punch and a kick on Ace, dealing it 5 bludgeoning damage!
Theran swings his shillelagh, connecting with Ace's head with a crunch and dealing 6 more bludgeoning damage! The lights in Ace's eyes blink off and the body falls to the floor. Bill is immediately behind and steps over the body of its fallen brother...just in time to get hacked by Albertus' sword for 7 slashing damage!
As Bill turns to face Albertus, Joseph welcomes him to the neighborhood with two swift stabs, dealing Bill an additional 12 piercing damage!
Bill sways on its feet, then attacks its chosen target, Albertus. The paladinic fellow, Albertus, is struck for 2 bludgeoning damage! The press of Dungeon Buster bodies around the door prevent a second one from getting through that doorway to attack.
Then Gil attacks Ogbar, striking him with a critical hit! Ogbar takes 5 bludgeoning damage! (10 reduced to 5 from rage)

Ogbar…he’s in trouble, the paladin exclaims! Breaking off from the main group, Al strides thirty feet west, ending knightly movement in square just west of Ogbar.

Paying it forward, Al thinks to himself. Harkening back to the unknown savior legionnaire who inspired Al with a knightly bond. Never leave a fellow soldier behind! And so it is, Al shifts knightly attention just west of Ogbar. Then he really gives it to ol’ Gill!

Take that, Al exclaims at Gill. As his trusty longsword hopefully finds proper purchase!
