[Gameplay] 6. Sepulcher of the Servant

Dec 29, 2023 11:24 pm
The Complex Puzzle I'm Skipping...
An enormous spiral mosaic, partially obscured by a tattered tarpaulin, is built into the floor of the tower. While you identify this as the holy symbol of Pharasma, the observatory was dedicated to Maat and Thoth, two deities with little, if any, relation to Pharasma. In fact, the spiral conceals a secret door leading down. Opening it requires speaking a secret phrase.

Fortunately, this phrase is inscribed along the walls with the prayers to Pharasma. In Ancient Osiriani there are all of the common prayers and affirmations to the Lady of Graves worked into the building’s decor save the phrase, "All who live must pass through the doorway of death to face her judgment."

Reciting this phrase while standing on the spiral opens the secret door, revealing a stone spiral staircase that leads down.

The Spiral Down
The spiraling stairway from above terminates in this vaulted chamber. Looming jackal-headed statuary, oversized pillars, and a long reflecting pool lend a grandiose scale to the room.

Hieroglyphs cover the walls, describing the Shepses family’s history and the life of Nefru Shepses—his divine inspiration to join Pharasma’s faith, the creation of the necropolis, and his restoration of Wati.

Tabat looks around in awe as they reach the base of the base of the spiral stairs. "This place, it is beyond anything we've seen so far. Who knows how long it has lain undisturbed...possibly since the end of its construction. These Jackal-headed statues standing guard, along with the clear inspiration of Pharasma here, this must be the tomb of Nefru Shepses himself, or at least a close family member. Do you concur, Khadi? A place holy to both the new gods and the old."

OOC:
Happy New Year
Jaware, who as a matter of course, keeps his eyes open for the telltale glow of magic, steps toward the reflecting pool. "There is something in there, at the bottom. It is ... abjuration magic. Buried in the sand at the bottom."

You do some tests, and find that the water itself isn't magical, or poisonous or acidic. Nor does it appear to be home to any dangerous creatures, although that is more difficult to discern.

Searching the silt at the bottom, you find a pair of bracers of armor +1 and 30 silvery rods. They are carved in hieroglyphs marking them as funerary rods to sanctify the pool. Made of silver, they're worth 50 gold each.
Jan 7, 2024 2:07 am
"These will fetch a good price," Tabat says, collecting the rods together. "And the bracers as well, unless one of you might find use for them."
OOC:
Happy New Year everyone!

I'm assuming all of us use traditional armor, even Jaware, right? Bracers are probably decent loot though.

OOC:
Khadi doesn't wear armour, but she's already got some bracers.
'Yes...though this suggests our Masked man isn't here for looting. We should be on our guard.'

Jaware wears a mithril shirt, yes.
Jan 7, 2024 8:09 pm
"Right," Tabat says, "Let's press on, and be wary." He heads to one of the two central sets of northern doors and, after Iseret checks them over for traps, pushes them open.
Jan 7, 2024 8:32 pm
Iseret checks the doors to the north. They're untapped and unlocked.

The arched ceiling of this chamber towers overhead, rising to a height of sixty feet above the tiled floor. Hundreds of small alcoves cover the walls, hidden behind neglected silk curtains in blue and gold. A small altar sits in the center, caked in unsightly stains. A heavy scent of camphor and pitch hang in the air.

Thirty zombies are chained to the walls with improvised shackles, but a dozen uncontrolled zombies roam the room freely, attacking any living creature that enters the hall.

They shamble towards you. Everyone can act before they get attacks in.

Knowing, given the enemies before them, what Kahdi would do, Tabat waits for her to work her divine magic, then moves to stand between her any remaining, oncoming danger. "Protect Khadi," he says to Andromeda as he rushes forward.

With khopesh and shield he swings at the nearest enemy.

Andromeda rushes forward as well, chomping at any enemy that comes close to Khadi.
OOC:
Just realized while posting this that I had forgotten to update Andromeda's 6th level advancement details. Just in case, her AC went up to 18 FYI

Even with their damage reduction, Andromeda years one apart, as Tabat slashes one down.

Jaware fires two arrows at the last two, but misses wildly.

Sorry. Been a busy week and then I just got word that Jennell Jaquays passed away today.
Iseret moves into position for a sneak attack on one of the zombies.

Rolls

Short sword vs. zombie (flanking, sneak attack) - (1d20+6+2, 1d4+4+2d6)

1d20+6+2 : (6) + 8 = 14

1d4+4+2d6 : (3) + (51) + 4 = 13

As the second last zombie falls to Iseret's blade, you hear sounds behind you and four individuals appear.

Meret-Hetef
The leader, wearing a golden mask, points at you with her weapon. "You fools! The mask belongs to us! We are the true heirs to the Sky Pharaoh’s legacy! When he rises again to reclaim his throne, we will receive Hakotep’s blessings, not the likes of you!" The cultists attack.

You're all up before the zombie, and the other four.

Rolls

Initiative for newbies - (1d20+1)

(6) + 1 = 7

Jan 11, 2024 7:23 am
'Mask? Hakotep? Khalifa is clearly confused by the words. Still ethe newcomers clearly mean harm.

'Khepri, the others could do with a little aid.' She lifts her symbol as the , likely familiar by now, feeling of the Bless spell settles across the others.
OOC:
Everyone gets a bless, +1 to attack and will saves vs fear

Iseret takes advantage of the delay of the cultists and sneak attacks one of them.

Rolls

Short sword vs. cultist (sneak attack) - (1d20+6, 1d4+4+2d6)

1d20+6 : (5) + 6 = 11

1d4+4+2d6 : (1) + (56) + 4 = 16

Jan 12, 2024 6:13 am
While Andromeda holds to protect Khadi, Tabat shifts to the newcomers and moves to engage the masked man, presumably their leader. "If the mask is that important to you, perhaps you shouldn't have brought it to us!"
OOC:
Moving and attacking, Khopesh and shield still out. Risky strike: -2 attack, +4 damage.

Used a hero point to re-roll that abysmal confirmation roll - probably still isn't enough, even vs flat footed AC :/

Andromeda to attack the remaining zombie, assuming it moves into melee.

Also adding a roll for Kn: Religion to see if he recognizes the name drop of Hakotep

The cultists have AC 16, flatfooted 14, so Iseret misses her sneak attack.

Tabat attacks Meret-Hetef, who's AC is 17, so that hero point comes in perfectly. The attack hits hard, and she takes terrible damage. 29 damage. With Jaware's snowball and arrow, that's 42 to her.

Jaware launches a pair of arrows at the leader, hoping to take them down and demoralize the cultists. Fat chance of that, he thinks.

She squeaks at the sudden overwhelming power demonstrated, takes a five foot step back, and uses her wand. She vanishes from sight.

The three cultists attack Tabat and Iseret. Tabat takes 13 electricity damage, but Iseret isn't struck.

You're all up.
