You travel down a short path to another fork. The path north seems to have the sent to decay. To the south, you think you hear a very faint sound of flowing water.

You head towards the sound of water and find a bridge over a small casm. The bottom of the casm looks to have stalagmites that would hurt to fall on. The bridge seems old, but there are signs of repair indicating that the bridge has been here a long time and the inhabitants have reinforced it.
On the other side, you do hear the sound of water, like a small river, and you hear the sound of voices. The voices mix with the sound of flowing water, making them hard to interpret.
What do you do?

Hrafe puts his fingers to his lips indicating they should be quiet. Then places his lantern on a high point, closing the hood on it to illuminate their crossing. He motions for Makasi and Edgar to follow, and for Ylliane to take up a position where she could provide fire support at range. Then motions to Makasi's lantern, taking Glaezentorg in one hand beckons for the lantern to be attached to the hook on his belt. He took point and with due caution attached a lifeline to his belt casting it around the bridge's bottom and around the haft of his axe.
He began to traverse the bridge swiftly, free abseiling, as one might have expected from a barbarian he was quite good at it. Moving swiftly and expertly. Keeping constant tension on his line to arrest much of his weight as he crossed the bridge. As he advanced he pulled slack from the haft of his axe, only just enough for his next step. Tying it at the far end, where the bridge was anchored. He then moved flush with the opposite wall and attempted to keep his movement and noise to a minimum.

Edgar draws his dagger and follows closely behind Hrafe trying to be as quiet as possible.

OOC:
Are you guys attempting to ambush the voices? If yes, here are the rules:[ +- ] Ambushes and Surprise
In situations when one side ambushes or surprises the other, start by letting the ambushing side pick one
creature who will start the ambush. Then roll initiative for all members of the ambushing side.
Only two creatures get to act in the ambush round: the
nominated ambusher and their highest initiative ally. The GM can choose whether to advance the escalation die after the surprise round. Sometimes it seems dramatically appropriate, other times not.
Then roll initiative for the side that got ambushed and play normal combat rounds.

OOC:
Will we be able to spy on them first? Don't want to accidentally kill an innocent prisoner or something.Mar 11, 2024 6:19 pm
OOC:
if you are attacking then there is no spying. If you are spying, then there will me more stealth rolls, one to spy and then another to surprise. What is the partying doing?

OOC:
Ylliane always prefers intelligence gathering when circumstances (and time, of course) permit. She's pretty good at being quiet, so she'll volunteer to go check it out if we need a volunteer.Mar 12, 2024 4:15 pm
At the far side of the bridge, Makasi motions to ask if Ylliane or Edgar wants to scout ahead.
OOC:
I say do it. Edgar, I think, is stealthy, too.Mar 12, 2024 6:14 pm
Edgar shrugs and with his left hand holds it out as if to offer the opportunity to Ylliane.
OOC:
Edgar is stealthy as well. Though right now he's content to let Hrafe (or anyone else) take the lead.Mar 12, 2024 7:46 pm
OOC:
Edgar has train assassin 5 and Ylliane has imperial sniper 5 so either will work. I'll allow both to scout and use the result of whoever rolls, just need to know if only one is going (and who) or if both areRoll would be d20+Dex mod+lv+5 (background)
Mar 12, 2024 7:59 pm
Ylliane would normally defer to Edgar as well, but if he's wanting her to go instead...
She creeps forward, keeping an ear out for any new sounds as she gets closer. She moves extremely slowly. At times she pauses in mid-step for what seems like longer than is absolutely necessary, but long years of training and practice are not to be denied at this stage of her life.

DEX - (Sniper) - (1d20+10)
(9) + 10 = 19

Ylliane is as quiet as she can be, but the bridge is just slightly too loud. She hears up ahead, "Is someone on the bridge?" when no one comes across the bridge, she hears, "Be careful, I have a bad feeling." it appears the people on the other side are now on edge and are likely keeping watch on the bridge. Sneaking up isn't really an option anymore, and they seem to be whispering more now, which is drowned out by the sound of flowing of water.
OOC:
I mentioned the DC was 20. Since you got a 19, I didn't have anything bad happen to you like getting spotted and shot at or such, but the opportunity to sneak up has been lost.Mar 13, 2024 1:18 pm
Makasi draws her halberd and sighs. "Here we go," she says under her breath to Hrafe.

You all rush forward, knowing your cover is blown. You see 4 half orcs living boxes and moving them around, though it looks like they stopped doing this a few second ago due to hearing you coming. "Intruders!" they yell. You hear someone reply farther in, "What?", and notice a group of humans farther in. Both groups seem to have both crossbows and maces on them. On the far side of both groups you see a flowing river.
You can move from (and thus attack at far range):
1 to 2 or 3
2 to 1, 3, or 5
3 to 1, 2, 4, or 5
4 to 3
5 to 2, 3, or 6
6 to 5
OOC:
For this battle, I have placed 6 markers in black on the map. You can use your move action to go from either somewhere in the same number to somewhere else in the same number (normally to engage someone), or you can move to a number close to the one you are near (so from area 1 to area 2 or 3, for example). You are near someone if you are in the same area, and far from someone if they are in an area next to your area, and beyond far if they are in an area more than one number away. You can move from (and thus attack at far range):
1 to 2 or 3
2 to 1, 3, or 5
3 to 1, 2, 4, or 5
4 to 3
5 to 2, 3, or 6
6 to 5
Rolls
Ylliane - (2d20H1+7)
(81) + 7 = 15
Edgar - (1d20+6)
(2) + 6 = 8
Hrafe - (2d20H1+4)
(214) + 4 = 18
Makasi - (2d20H1+4)
(1818) + 4 = 22
Half Orc Thugs - (1d20+3)
(1) + 3 = 4
Human Thugs - (2d20H1+3)
(54) + 3 = 8

OOC:
Everyone in the party rolled equal to or better than the best initiative amongst the enemy, so this will be side initiative.Everyone in the party can take their turn, then the enemy will go.

Edgar rushes forward and tries to kick one of the half orcs over the railings.
OOC:
Don't know what to roll to push one of them back over the side, but added a Melee Attack roll.Rolls
Melee Attack - Total - (1d20+9)
(8) + 9 = 17
Mar 18, 2024 11:28 pm
OOC:
Normally if you are doing anything other than making an attack roll with a weapon or spell, you are making an ability check. Pushing someone sounds like strength, and I would imagine an assassin probably knows how to kill a target by pushing them off a ledge or roof so you'd add 5 from your background as an assassin, so that would be a 16 instead of a 17 but I will say doing this to a common enemy is normal difficulty (15) but doing it to a leader type enemy would be hard (20) while a boss would be very hard (25).TLDR: strength ability check using assassin background instead of attack, but you still succeed
I am assuming closest enemy since you just said "one of the half orcs"
Rolls
Fall damage to enemy - (2d6)
(14) = 5
Mar 20, 2024 6:09 pm
As soon as the others move to attack, Ylliane pulls an arrow from her quiver as she drops to a knee. In just a moment, her bowstring is stretched and the arrow released, flying at the next one along. A second arrow flies along the same route as the first a breath later.
