"Well, Okay Davey! Did you hear they arrested the devil?", Oscar pauses for comedic effect and Davey's response.

All the while slowing making his way out of the room.

Once Davey reponds he blurts out, "They got him on possession."
OOC:
I'm with @DragonDweller62 we should still try for the supply room and wait until we absolutely have to fight Davey. Plus I just found reader's digest 100 all time jokes.

Let's see what Davey B thinks of this joke...

EDIT he likes it :)
"HA HA HA HA HA HAHHHHAH HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAA" explodes Davey B.

"That's a good one you got there, Oscar!"

"I like what you did there! The devil! Possession!!! Drugs!!!!! Which are evil!!!!!! And so's the devil!!! Works on so many levels!!!!!!!"

"HA HA HA HA HA HAHHHHAH HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAA"

There is a pause in the loud raucous cackling, as if Davey B is taking a breath...

Then you hear his voice again.

"Would you like to hear a joke from me, visitors?"

The hand of cards is no longer on the wall - Davey B turned it off once Oscar started talking about offering up a joke.

You continue to move onwards and come to a room labeled "Supplies". It's an unassuming simple metal door with a lever handle and a keyhole.

A look behind the scenes - I'm sharing each joke you tell with a friend, they're rating them on a scale of 10 (best joke ever) to 1 (indescribably unfunny). I'm then using that as a target for a roll-under with a d10.

"Sure Davey, but I'm just getting started! How about another one from me first. When is a duck not a duck?", Oscar says leaving the sentence hang in the air.

"When he's a QUACK! You should've seen my last medical Bill!", Oscar says throwing his arms wide. As he does he continues to walk backwards out of the room towards the supply closet.

Let's see how Davey B responds to this joke...

EDIT not so impressed this time...
There's an uncanny silence after Oscar tells this second joke.

After several seconds, Davy B speaks up again,

"This joke, however, Oscar. This joke is not a good one. This one does not delight me, does not bring me joy. Rather, it frustrates and annoys me. I encourage you to choose a better joke for your next one, visitors..."

You are now all standing in front of the door to the room labeled "Supplies".

"You can't win all of them, Davey. How about this?

I went to the Doctor's the other day. I said "Doc, I can’t stop singing The Green, Green Grass Of Home."

He said: "That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome."
"Is it common?" I asked.

"It’s not unusual," he replied."
, Oscar's gives his shoulders an exaggerated shrug as he delivers the joke, trying to hide the nervous energy building up inside him.

He turns looking at the ceiling waiting for Davey's response. As he does, he motions for his companions to open door.
OOC:
Oscar is going to try and keep all attention on himself while someone check's out the supply room.

I'll wait for one of the other PCs to open the door before posting - AND will check now to see how this joke resonates with Davey B...

EDIT the answer is "not well"

Henry hesitates. He wondered if opening the door while talking to Davey B would be wise? He tries the door handle to see if it is unlocked.

"We are made from flesh and blood and are in need of rest and sustenance. Without proper care to our bodies, we lack the strength a quick wit needs. Why don't you tell us a joke that is more to your linking - as inspiration - and I'm sure we can come up with something entertaining after we had one or two hours of ... inactivity."

Mattie's eyes dart around to see anything that might either be dangerous or useful in their surroundings.

I think to paraphrase "Jaws"/"Der weiße Hai"... "You're gonna need some better jokes" heh...
Feb 13, 2024 9:15 am
Henry tries the storage room door, but finds it locked.

Davey B responds to Mattie,

"Oh, so you need some rest do you? Well, if you think you'll have some better jokes for me after you've had a chance to do that, I'm sure we can help you out with that..."

"I notice you trying to open that door, Henry son of Thomas. I think you could get some rest in there".

And with that, something clicks at the doorway, and the door facing Henry unlocks and opens a crack.

"And, yes, maybe you do need some inspiration to help you give me better jokes. Here's one of my favourites..."

"How many psychiatrists does it take to change a lightbulb?"

"One, but the light bulb has got to want to change!"

More very loud very raucous laughter surrounds you after Davey B has delivered his punchline, and continues for a good 20 seconds or so...

There is then another pause, as if again Davey B is drawing a breath.

And then you hear the sound of "Lullaby and Goodnight" coming from inside the storeroom. A dim light comes through the crack of the door, and around you in the corridor the lights are almost extinguished. Faint moons and stars start to move gently around the walls, ceilings, and floors out here.

"Go on, visitors, go and get yourselves some rest in there." says Davey B.
Feb 13, 2024 11:31 am
"Thank you, Davey. That's a neat trick.", Oscar says somewhat startled by the light display. He glances at Henry and opens the door.
Feb 13, 2024 12:39 pm
Oscar pushes the door open and the sounds of the lullaby get a bit louder.

Inside the room, the same kind of putting-kids-to-sleep light show is going on inside, mostly on the ceiling and the floor, as the walls are covered in shelves.

There's space in here for you all to lie down and get some sleep.
OOC:
What you find in the store room
Mechanically the store room will allow you to upgrade your Supplies Dice to d8.

You also find each one specific object that you could reasonably expect to find in a near-future hospital storage room. You each have the choice to either describe this object to us i.e. choose for yourself (I'll then provide it with any relevant mechanical details e.g. amount of HP it recovers on use or something like that). Or you can leave it to me/a roll to decide what you find.

I leave that choice to each of you individually i.e. some of you can make up your own piece of kit, others can roll against a table I put together.

Taking a rest
If you take a Long Rest, you restore your Doom Dice to their highest die (a Ud6 for all of you, I think), reset your Hit Points to maximum, and there are some other specific features that rest on a Long Rest (Oscar has one of these).

However, you can only take a Long Rest in a safe location - a nights sleep in somewhere like a town with safe lodging, or somewhere your party can fortify. It comes down to how safe the PCs feel they are.

My sense is that you're feeling pretty edgy and unsafe at the moment, so my default would be to say you can only take a Short Rest mechanically in this room. This gives you Hit Points regained equal to half your CON score rounded down. Only one short rest is possible per day.

However (again) this is the first time you are looking to take a rest, and the first time you engage with that aspect of the rules. Thus, I'll again give each of you individually the choice whether you want to take this rest using RAW (i.e. it counts as a Short Rest OR you make a post describing how and why your character feels safe enough to get a good rest in this situation), or if, for just this one time, you'd like to take the mechanical benefit of a Full Rest if you do sleep a full night in this room (with RAW then applying for all future resting situations), then that's indeed what you get.

Map of the sanatorium
Based on your feedback, I'm going to try and put together a rough map of the sanatorium, based on the descriptions I've shared of it in this thread.

That's not the kind of thing I'm good or quick at, though, so if any of you would enjoy doing that, just let us know, very happy to go with what you come up with. If there's something that would cause a big problem to the adventure, I'd change it, or ask you to change it - but I don't think that's very likely to happen.

OOC:
So, Oscar would need a long rest to get his Doom die back up to D6 and use his powers without risking being doomed. However, I can't think of a good reason he would get a long rest other than being over stimulated and exhausted.

I think it's more likely he would be jumpy thinking about jokes.
Good news, it looks like he will be back to full health after a short rest.

As far as a future item we could find, what about proper flashlights that can charge in the sun or use batteries?
Oscar uses the floor to put out his torch and slumps to the against the wall. His arms wrap around his knees.

He racks his brains for any jokes he may have heard in the past and mutters have thought phrases under his breathe.

"What do you get when, no. Knock, Knock, no that's terrible , he whispers to himself.

’We had traveling jesters come through our town on fair day. The bad ones were sometimes tarred and feathered. I’m more of a witty response kind of humorist… but I have a good one in reserve if need be. Although…..’ Henry sinks into his mind as he watches his friends ready for rest. He thinks to himself, speaking to the curse he has been stuck with.

‘Demon? Know any good jokes…..?’

@microtheMacroBear when you used your powers, and your Doom Die, I expect it was unclear how difficult it would be to recharge them. So, if it doesn't spoil the tension for you, I'm good with you getting them recharged this time.

I'd thought to change that for the future, i.e. be RAW in the future.

But I'm happy to homebrew this rule - I assume it makes players less likely to use their powers and their Doom Die when it's harder to recharge them, and there's fun in using the abilities you have.

So if you'd enjoy it more, to feel freer to use these things, we can just go for "these things refresh once a day i.e. overnight"
Henry waits a moment, and then he hears a voice inside his head.

"Hey, Henry. Yeah, your own personal demon does have a few good jokes for you. I like this one..."

"What do you call a dog magician? A labracadabrador."

"And here's another good one - would go down well, maybe, with someone who's a bit of a cowboy like yourself..."

"A cowboy asked me if I could help him round up 18 cows. I said yes, of course. That’s 20 cows."

The demon's voice is different this time, though. It's the voice of... Sonny Sigg...?!?!

'A joke with math. No way will that work... mebbe because he's a com-pooter, but not with real folk, demon.' Henry thinks to himself. 'You sound different... are you legion like the swine the Man Jesus cast out? Or just flakey?'.
OOC:
LOL- Sonny Sigg is doomed to be a demon! I better start making him a little more evil. Curious/Evil.

I'm going to assume you all take a rest, go to sleep, in the store room. I'll wait until tomorrow (Friday 16th) to narrate that, in case any of you want to do something else than that.

You can post the object you'd like to find in the room, and whether you want to take a full mechanical Long Rest or not, later on i.e. we can retcon those things, as they are unlikely to have an immediate effect on the narrative.
