Assuming you make your way out into the corridor, please let me know any precautions you might take to be sneaky (maybe strapping down metal so it doesn't clink so much?), what you plan to do about the lighting conditions, any other tactical stuff you might think of.Rose, having sketched out the map that Baby D showed you of the facility, would know that turning left will be the quickest way to a stairwell and elevators that were shown going down to the public transit station i.e. where Baby D indicated Laughing Jack said he would be going towards.

Oscar slings his rifle on his back, turns and collects a several chunks of wood from the boxes in the root cellar and then a burning piece from the fire vegetables in the basin. He sighs, takes off his shoe, removes one of his socks and secures it on a piece of unlit wood.
"I figure we can use this for light.", he whispers touching the blazing piece of wood to his unburnt torch. It catches.
"Now we've got two torches. If we could find a flashlight that would be better, but hopefully this will do. Who wants the other one?", he asks as the flickering light bounces off the shadowed walls casting everything in a sickly yellow glow. Bertie stands to his side, his face shadowed by the dancing lights.

Love your creativity there, Oscar/@microtheMacroBear! You now have two torches!I went back to check the rules about 'basic' adventuring gear, and I think this is relevant:
"Your character starts the game with Ud6 worth of Supplies, that represents your overall traveling gear (food, water, rope, flashlights, etc.)."
So if other people want to roll their supply utility die, currently a d6, you can grab yourself e.g. one flashlight (you roll the d6 and if you get 1 or 2 your supply die is downgraded to a d4)

"Hey, that's neat," Rose whispers back, offering to take the second torch. "Where'd you learn that, Magic Boy Scouts?" Chuckling at her own joke, Rose uses the light of the torch to illuminate the map, as if testing whether the laws of physics still work in this eerie realm. "So this says we should head left, then take some stairs down to the subway. I seriously doubt the elevators will be working. Or that we'd want to ride them, given who's currently in charge here."
Glancing at the signs, she's only slightly troubled by all the references to blood. Baby D said that disease wouldn't catch, so we should be fine.

"To bad I couldn't set stuff on fire with my mind when I was in the ACTUAL scouts. Would have come in handy.", he thinks and then hands Rose one of the torches.

I think you're good to go out into the corridor now. @Adrasthea/Mattie can let us know when they post, any prep they did before heading out to join you (assuming Mattie does go out to join you.OOC:
To move things along, I'll also post here already what you see as you move out into the corridor, I am assuming as quietly and as stealthily as you can.The shiny linoleum under your feet would make a slapping noise against your shoes, you can tell, if you weren't walking on it very carefully.
Ahead of you, you see a straight corridor, with doors off each side of it at intervals of about 30 feet - presumably there are rooms behind them that are about 30 feet wide.
OOC:
There's no "group roll" rule here - and I want you to roll to see how stealthy you can be in this situation, so that will be a DEX test. But it feels to me here too punishing to have you each make such a test - chances are fairly high that you'll fail that, and that's not the vibe I'd go for here. AND you're up against a pretty big threat here. Hm.
I'm going to say you just need two DEX successes out of the four of you AND if someone rolls a natural 20 then it's a group fail.
I'm not going to adjust your roll based on the threat level of your opponent(s) - I'm going to say that your preparations negate that. For now.
AND this roll will cover you for some distance of moving through the Sanatorium. I'll ping you the next time I want you to make one.
Jan 26, 2024 10:10 am
OOC:
I don't know how long we'll want to keep playing this game. I assume at least to the point where you'll have a chance to move a big step closer to the Tower, which you will have an opportunity to do depending on what happens in the sanatorium. If you are interested in moving on and playing out some more locations, to continue the quest to the Tower, there are mechanics for how that works, and I have a map of the world and the spokes prepared for that.
When you move to a new location, the ease and danger of up-coming locations is effected depending on whether you managed to strike a significant blow against the forces of chaos, or if you suffered major losses to those forces. Thus you might want to consider trying to take out or disable major players/"bosses" you encounter here, to make your next steps towards the Tower easier.

You are currently on Sub-Level 3.The transit station is six floors below you i.e. Sub-Level 9. The lowest level shown is Sub-Level 10.
Assuming you want to head directly to the transit station below you, the following locations on the map/plan/schematic seem of particular interest.
You're also each welcome to choose one additional location that one could imagine finding in such a futuristic-and-magic-aware sanatorium, and I'll add it to the description below.
Sub-Level 3: morgue and autopsy room (i.e. where you entered the sanatorium)
Sub-Level 4: a storage room (maybe you'd find some still-usable supplies there?)
Sub-Level 5: a security and observation office (maybe there are cameras around the sanatorium that you can use to find out what's going on there?)
Sub-Level 6: a cafeteria (a chance to see what the people who built this used to eat...?)
Sub-Level 7: a pharmacy (maybe some useful medication and drugs and devices?)
Sub-Level 8: central control room for IT and data-centre (if you wanted to try and do something about Davy B).
Sub-Level 9: Surgical teaching arena (who knows what might go on in here...?!) and transit station.

I have managed to confuse you. Sorry! What I meant was...
In addition to the locations I put on that list, you can add each another one that's not on the list, that you make up yourself, and if I feel it's something that could be in the building, then I'll put it in there somewhere.
And for the rolls I meant for each of you to do one roll - and then we'd have a total of four rolls, and then as long as you didn't get a majority of failures, you'd have passed the test. I'm going to take the two rolls so far (from @SenorDeebs and @microtheMacroBear) as successes, as both rolled three successes, one failure.
@Adrasthea and @DragonDweller62 please just roll 1d20 each - as long as you don't roll a 20, then you've all passed the stealth test.
If you can think of a better way of doing a group stealth test, then please let me know - I find this clunky and still not very satisfying...

Oh got it!Maybe we have the person with the highest Dex do 2 rolls at advantage like we are helping @Beardhare?
Use a pass, pass with consequence, fail system.
Both save - pass
1 saves - pass with consequence
0 saves - fail
Change the advantage to disadvantage depending on the likelihood we could run into trouble? We could also keep it as-is but have you roll the Stealth checks to keep the game moving?
So, thinking about locations that could be in a sanitorium. How about an old school surgucal operation theater? It would be an arena style theater sort of like a turn of the century one with bleacher seats except the technology is very high-tech.

Ah, yes, @microtheMacroBear, I like that mechanic for the stealth. Thanks for the idea.Next time, I'm going to use that with an adaptation i.e. one roll with advantage for the person with highest DEX, and one with the lowest, and then use the table you suggested to work with the results
Both save - pass
1 saves - pass with consequence
0 saves - fail
And maybe I'll adjust the target numbers based on the threat you're rolling against.
And I'll do the rolls for you, rather than waiting for those characters to do them, to speed things up, as there's no player agency involved in making the roll - it'll just be that I've decided it's time for another one based on the narrative.
And I love the idea of the area-style operating theatre! Editing my previous post to add that!

If there's a location you'd like added to the 'map' like the arena-style teaching surgery room we've just added, @DragonDweller62/Rose (or indeed @Adrasthea/Mattie or @SenorDeebs/Henry) just let us know. And we've got plenty already, so no need or pressure for you to come up with oneOOC:
I'm assuming you're all following Rose, and taking a left turn as you leave the morgue. If you want to do something different, let us know. The light of your torches and lantern reflects off the metallic walls you are walking past - sometimes making it seem like there is something moving towards you, as the light waves and flickers. But no. Just a reflection.
The smell is dry and musty. Although, despite what you've been told by Baby D about how long the sanatorium experienced the catastrophe that killed many and turned the remaining to undead - despite that, the floors and surfaces are clean of dust.
Some of the doors you move past have a window in them. Against a few of these, there seems to be resting something, some kind of additional humanoid shape that looms up against the glass. And sometimes these seem to be moving - but, again, it turns out that this is just a trick of the light and reflection.
You walk past a few abandoned gurneys - stripped of any bedding or other additions, just the metal frame and the wheels. A couple of these are neatly lined up against the walls, a couple are skewed across the corridor and are more dented and damaged than the others.
One door you pass has a pile of chairs and heavy-looking technical equipment jammed up against it. Above this pile is written in hurried marker-pen "DEAD INSIDE".
Eventually you come to an alcove with a set of eight elevator doors - four in one wall, four facing them directly in the opposite wall. And at the end of the alcove a door with a window in it, with symbols on it representing up and down staircases behind it.

It also sounds like Oscar has opened the door into the stairwell - and that Bertie moves onto the platform that the door opens onto, so I'm going to narrate what happens on doing that...Your torchlight illuminates a metallic wall opposite the door, with a flat platform directly in front of the door. To the right, a staircase goes upwards, to the left downwards. You can see that after several steps the upward staircase turns to the left, the downwards staircase to the right - so the stairs appear to be circling around a central pillar.
The air is slightly warmer through this door, in the staircase in general, and you can feel air currents moving here that you didn't notice as you moved along Sub-Level 3 to get to the staircase.

Oscar swallows and glances at his torch dancing with the currents of air. He glances at his companions and pulls out his taser.

Rose watches Oscar and Henry disappear through the door to the stairwell, then enters herself. As soon as the warm air hits her, she has a thought that eerily mirrors Oscar's: Yep, this Hell. She wants to share this observation with the others but something about the stairwell silences her, as if it marks the den of a man-eating ape that would devour her if she woke it up.
She creeps soundlessly down to the landing between Three and Four, too stubborn to admit the fear that's prickling its way up her back.

The way down to the next level is clear. To reach it you rotate one full turn around the central pilar, so that you are standing directly below the platform on which you entered the stairwell.
There is a sign above this door, indicating "Sub-Level 4". As Oscar peers out through the window, all he sees is another alcove containing doors to eight elevators.
The air currents - not hot, just noticeably warmer than the air in Sub-Level 3 - are dry. And they smell strongly of sulphur.
Now that players are rolling for stealth in the Alien RPG game I'm in here, I am changing my mind AGAIN on how I want you to do this. I'll follow the way Alien RPG does it i.e. PC with the lowest DEX makes one roll for the whole group. Here that will be either Rose or Oscar - both have a DEX of 10.

Mattie, closest to Oscar, feels for her Shotgun - just in case. She enters the room in front of them systematically scanning it with her trained eyes. Should there be dangers or even traps, she wants to be aware of them, so she can protect her group.

As soon as Rose enters, she checks the map to see how far it is to the storage room. She thinks, Hopefully this isn't as hard as I feel like it's gonna be.
Feb 3, 2024 9:49 am
Oscar pushes open the door, with Bertie at his heals, and moves into the space between the elevator doors. His torch, as before, throws a flickering light against the surfaces of the space around them - again, metallic walls and ceiling, some kind of linoleum-like surface on the floor.
As the others come to join Oscar, Rose's boot hits an unexpectedly slippery spot. Rose is so concentrated on moving quietly, her senses so switched on to the noises and what she is looking at in front of her, that she is caught completely unawares. She slips, and falls, and tumbles to the floor, hitting also against the walls with the barrel of her shotgun.
The sound doesn't echo through the corridors - but it is loud, and just a moment after the fall, you all notice a change in background sounds of the corridor. There are new hums you can hear, very faintly, in the background. Several small points of orange light turn on - some near the elevator doors, a couple on the ceiling. This reminds Rose and Oscar of what it feels like when a computer starts to boot itself up.
From the plan, Rose expects the storage room to be perhaps a hundred yards down the corridor to the left, when they leave the elevator alcove.

"Fuck!" Rose hisses as she crashes into the wall loud enough to literally wake the dead. "I'm fine, guys, thanks," she whispers, then notices the lights and the humming. "I just screwed us over, didn't I? Goddammit, I knew I would." Her face flushes and she directs her mounting frustration at the evil lights . . . then a thought strikes her.
"Hey, if Davey B's waking up, we're not still going to that storage room, are we? Wouldn't that just leave us cornered in the heart of his domain? Let's just get the hell outta Dodge while we can. We could make it if we run."

"Calm yourself, Rose. All is well and we're still above snakes."
Mattie tries to comfort her companion. She too feels the unease. All that sneaking around, waiting for the big bad monster to come devour them doesn't do anybody's nerves any good. The young woman has felt the quiet gravity of silence restricting her thoughts and even her breathing. Every step, every gasp, every chafe has become a potential sound of doom. The sound of life itself, of their lives has become troublesome. In a way, the machines starting up far below is an alleviation of the oppressive need to remain as still as possible. Now, maybe they can stop tiptoeing around, making themselves half mad and face what's to come without having wrecked their nerves beforehand.
"All that worryin' is just like barkin' at a knot, kiddo." She smiles at Rose encouragingly, a gesture hardly seen in the twilight of the hall. "We got a purpose and a direction. Let's follow both for now." Mattie seeks Henry's gaze, but cannot quite make out his expression in the dark.

As you move forward the new sounds of humming continue - but aren't changing in tone or intensity. You see lots of the small orange points of light, but nothing is flashing, nothing is moving that you can see.
As you move down the corridor, it's more of what you saw on the previous level. Doors off each side at intervals of about 30 feet. There is a break in that pattern, as you come to an open area, with lots of seating. Two of the chairs have been ripped off their stands - you can see them flung off to the side of the space, both caked in dark stains.
As you enter this area, you hear a noise behind you, something moving your way. You hear the sound of something - feet? wheels? tracks? - moving across the floor towards you. As you look behind you, you can see a bright light that seems to be rotating, about a yard above the floor. A voice comes from the source of light saying:
"Barrowmancer Sanatorium. Visitor engagement device. Any visitors to the facility, please make yourselves known. We mean you no harm. We dare because we care."
It's currently about 70 yards behind you - so you're guessing something like 30 yards still to go before you get to the storage room. Your guess is that it's maybe 30 seconds before the light reaches your position.

If you want to try and hide, it would be another stealth i.e. DEX roll by either Rose or Oscar. You do have the choice to roll your Doom die and subtract what you roll on it, from the number you use in the DEX attribute test. This automatically downgrades your Doom die. Note that a long rest somewhere safe will return your Doom die to its maximum value.Feb 4, 2024 1:39 pm
Oscar looks at his companions and gestures towards the chairs. Bertie hides behind one of them. Oscar follows suit, hiding behind the wall and a row of chairs.
He pulls out his taser and readies himself in case they need to attack.

Henry draws his guns- sure that he was bound to use them soon enough.

Mattie feels Henry and nods, gun in hand.
She closes ranks with him, draws her hat a bit deeper and stares into the rapidly approaching headlight.
Rather than shouting, she calmly states: "I'm Mattie Adler. I serve the beam as do we all." Her gun is locked and loaded now. No need to shout, she is sure there are listening devices all over this place. They have been found now. Only a matter of time before whatever dwells in the deep awakes fully.

If either Oscar/@microtheMacroBear or Rose/@DragonDweller62 (I think it's fair to make the option available to either of you - although not both - as you both have the lowest DEX and hence chance to stealth successfully) want to try and make the stealth check a success then you could "Spit in the eye of Doom"To do this you roll your Doom die, and subtract it from your roll on an attribute test. This works post-roll i.e. you can apply it after you've seen the result of the initial roll. Your Doom Die automatically downgrades after this, regardless of what it rolls i.e. not just on a 1 or a 2. Your Doom Die returns to your personal highest value after a long rest.

With Mattie's use of a normal volume of voice - she's right, no need to shout to be heard well here - ........
Suddenly the lights come on!
It's a shock to all of you - your eyes have been adjusted to the low light offered by the lantern and the torches, but now suddenly you're surrounded by what feels like BRIGHT artificial light (it's probably not unusually bright - but it feels overwhelming to your eyes).
Some of the lamps flicker slightly as they seem to be warming up. Others are instantly ON and BRIGHT.
And all of you feel a shiver in your spine. You can tell that now you really are being watched.
And a voice, just at normal speaking volume, comes out of the walls. It speaks in a slow drawling Brooklyn accent
"Well hey little visitor engagement device. Seems like that noise we picked up earlier wasn't just some escaped experimental rat getting all frisky. You've found us some visitors. Yes. That you have. You can go back to your favourite place again now, little robot."
And with that, the stick-legged yard-high shiny automaton that had been moving towards you makes an abrupt full turn and heads back the way it came - the rotating lamp on the top of its head now switched off and no longer rotating. As it departs it says:
"Yes Davey B. Visitor engagement device returning to charging module. Have a nice day, visitors to the facility."
"And what about you, visitors? What are you doing here? Haven't had anyone here to talk with - who'll talk back, at least - in a long time. Apart from myself, that is. And some of these robots. But that conversation, it's not been sparkling, if you get my drift. Not very amusing.
Maybe we can have some fun here together? Maybe you've got some good jokes for me? Now that'd be a treat..."

'You're in trouble now...' the demon inside Henry's head whispers. 'Quiet, you' he thinks.
'I am Henry son of Thomas of Pennilton, New Canaan. Who hails us thus, through the air and without body?' Henry asks, blinking and putting hand to forehead.

Oscar crouches with his taser crackling, ready to pounce on the robot when the lights temporarily blinds him. He hears an
uncharacteristic yip come from Bertie.
He shakes his head, clearing his vision and stands up. He looks at his taser feeling a little foolish. "Probably wouldn't have worked anyways.", he thinks.
"Ah, hi, Davey B? Oscar Potts of Philadelphia. You sure have a nice, clean facility here.", Oscar says trying to keep the quaver out of his voice.

Rose remembers all her panic when the lights snap on and her heart leaps out of her chest. "Yes, I agree—it is Davey B, right?" She projects her voice up at the walls, scanning them for a speaker or passage out of which the voice could be coming. With a curtsy, she adds, "Rose Maynard of New York. If it's jokes you want, I think we may have a few." Even as she says that, Rose is hard-pressed to fight through her nerves for some humor right now.

"These days I like to call myself - for others to call me - Davey B. I'm glad you like our facility, Oscar Potts. It's pretty quiet these days, but don't let that deceive you! There's plenty of fun times we can have together here. What's your pleasure? I've got some real sights to show you."
"Mind, though, I need to have some of that fun myself here!"
"Pick a card, any card..."
With that, a section of the metal wall flashes and then shows a fan of playing cards arrayed before you, showing you their backs. The cards are about 50cm high.
"Go on, one of you, pick a card, will you?"
And with that, Davey B makes a quiet sniggering sound.

"How many psychiatrists does it take to change a lightbulb?"
"One, but the light bulb has got to want to change!"
More very loud very raucous laughter surrounds you after Davey B has delivered his punchline, and continues for a good 20 seconds or so...
There is then another pause, as if again Davey B is drawing a breath.

Inside the room, the same kind of putting-kids-to-sleep light show is going on inside, mostly on the ceiling and the floor, as the walls are covered in shelves.
There's space in here for you all to lie down and get some sleep.
Mechanically the store room will allow you to upgrade your Supplies Dice to d8.
You also find each one specific object that you could reasonably expect to find in a near-future hospital storage room. You each have the choice to either describe this object to us i.e. choose for yourself (I'll then provide it with any relevant mechanical details e.g. amount of HP it recovers on use or something like that). Or you can leave it to me/a roll to decide what you find.
I leave that choice to each of you individually i.e. some of you can make up your own piece of kit, others can roll against a table I put together.
Taking a rest
If you take a Long Rest, you restore your Doom Dice to their highest die (a Ud6 for all of you, I think), reset your Hit Points to maximum, and there are some other specific features that rest on a Long Rest (Oscar has one of these).
However, you can only take a Long Rest in a safe location - a nights sleep in somewhere like a town with safe lodging, or somewhere your party can fortify. It comes down to how safe the PCs feel they are.
My sense is that you're feeling pretty edgy and unsafe at the moment, so my default would be to say you can only take a Short Rest mechanically in this room. This gives you Hit Points regained equal to half your CON score rounded down. Only one short rest is possible per day.
However (again) this is the first time you are looking to take a rest, and the first time you engage with that aspect of the rules. Thus, I'll again give each of you individually the choice whether you want to take this rest using RAW (i.e. it counts as a Short Rest OR you make a post describing how and why your character feels safe enough to get a good rest in this situation), or if, for just this one time, you'd like to take the mechanical benefit of a Full Rest if you do sleep a full night in this room (with RAW then applying for all future resting situations), then that's indeed what you get.
Map of the sanatorium
Based on your feedback, I'm going to try and put together a rough map of the sanatorium, based on the descriptions I've shared of it in this thread.
That's not the kind of thing I'm good or quick at, though, so if any of you would enjoy doing that, just let us know, very happy to go with what you come up with. If there's something that would cause a big problem to the adventure, I'd change it, or ask you to change it - but I don't think that's very likely to happen.

So, Oscar would need a long rest to get his Doom die back up to D6 and use his powers without risking being doomed. However, I can't think of a good reason he would get a long rest other than being over stimulated and exhausted.I think it's more likely he would be jumpy thinking about jokes.
Good news, it looks like he will be back to full health after a short rest.
As far as a future item we could find, what about proper flashlights that can charge in the sun or use batteries?
He racks his brains for any jokes he may have heard in the past and mutters have thought phrases under his breathe.
"What do you get when, no. Knock, Knock, no that's terrible , he whispers to himself.

@microtheMacroBear when you used your powers, and your Doom Die, I expect it was unclear how difficult it would be to recharge them. So, if it doesn't spoil the tension for you, I'm good with you getting them recharged this time. I'd thought to change that for the future, i.e. be RAW in the future.
But I'm happy to homebrew this rule - I assume it makes players less likely to use their powers and their Doom Die when it's harder to recharge them, and there's fun in using the abilities you have.
So if you'd enjoy it more, to feel freer to use these things, we can just go for "these things refresh once a day i.e. overnight"

"And here's another good one - would go down well, maybe, with someone who's a bit of a cowboy like yourself..."
"A cowboy asked me if I could help him round up 18 cows. I said yes, of course. That’s 20 cows."
The demon's voice is different this time, though. It's the voice of... Sonny Sigg...?!?!
Feb 14, 2024 8:16 pm
'A joke with math. No way will that work... mebbe because he's a com-pooter, but not with real folk, demon.' Henry thinks to himself. 'You sound different... are you legion like the swine the Man Jesus cast out? Or just flakey?'.
OOC:
LOL- Sonny Sigg is doomed to be a demon! I better start making him a little more evil. Curious/Evil.Feb 15, 2024 7:22 am

I'm going to assume you all take a rest, go to sleep, in the store room. I'll wait until tomorrow (Friday 16th) to narrate that, in case any of you want to do something else than that. You can post the object you'd like to find in the room, and whether you want to take a full mechanical Long Rest or not, later on i.e. we can retcon those things, as they are unlikely to have an immediate effect on the narrative.

OOC:
I will describe my item later, but for now let me say this: I can't imagine Rose being able to take a long rest under the circumstances. I don't really think I need the benefits of a short rest either, so I'll save it to use later in the day. What I'd like to do is keep watch for threats to make sure the others can rest. I may even add an evocative description of doing so.Feb 15, 2024 1:46 pm
OOC:
@Beardhare, thank you! I was playing fast and loose with the powers, so I understand if we can't get a full rest. I like the homebrew rule, but of course that benefits Oscar :)So, I'm good with rules as written unless you decide otherwise.
I think to better serve the story, Oscar will only take the short rest. I don't mind things getting difficult, I'll get a chance to use the powers again :)
My item will still be Fancy and functional flashlights for Oscar.

Re: running Homebrew (powers/doom dice/HP lost reset once per 24 hours when you have a solid rest, independent of the safety of the rest) vs RAW - what I care about most is that we run the game in a way that you enjoy.I know some people who'd prefer the grittier harder RAW. And others who'd prefer this homebrew.
It sounds like @microtheMacroBear would have more fun with the homebrew - what about the other players?

Henry doesn't really need a long rest either- so he'll take a short and keep Rose (and Sigg) company. I have no practical equipment to add- but for funsies Henry would love to find a bandolier- something he can store his ammo in across his chest like Chewbacca. :)Last edited February 15, 2024 10:32 pm

Oh, I'm sorry @Beardhare!I would actually perfer things be grittier. Reading back at the post I can see that I could have phrased that better, apologies!
Oscar will take a short rest.

I too would prefer a more grounded RAW experience. It is fun to use your abilities often, but I believe a lot of tension and character building can be had out of putting a PC in a tight spot with no supernatural or extranormal help.Feb 16, 2024 4:10 am
Rose makes small talk with Henry about how crazy this situation is, but for most of the time she's too jumpy to do anything but listen. She does ask how he's doing with his demon. "Hope he's not too annoying. With any luck, we'll have him on his way in no time." How they would do that, she doesn't know.
OOC:
In terms of items, how about some salve or spray that speeds up wound healing? Mechanically a health potion, but more sci-fi. Depends on how "near" this "future" is, of course.Feb 16, 2024 11:16 am
Henry raises an eyebrow at Rose's statement. 'There'll be water if god wills it... Thus far it's proven to be a mild annoyance but I trust the fiend will show his true colors soon.'

No problem at all - these conversations are so much slower and easier to lead to misunderstandings than if we were using voice!Sounds like the preference is to keep this grittier and tougher for the PCs - and that's indeed my preference too, so we'll play it like that.
While the room you're in is just a normal store-room, the experience of resting here is made distinctly unsettling by the way Davey B has set an ambience of "bed-time for baby" with the moving stars and moons on the walls and ceiling, with what sounds like "The Best Lullabies in the World Ever" playlist he's got running for you.
While resting, each of you takes a look around the boxes and shelves in the room, putting some mundane items in your gunna, and searching around for anything particularly useful that catches your eye.
OOC:
Each of you finds the item you were looking for- @DragonDweller62/Rose finds a healing spray that can be applied as an action during combat, to heal 3HP. There's enough in here to use it four times.
- @SenorDeebs/Henry looks through the gear in the room, and is able to patch together a bandolier out of some leather strapping he requisitions off some kind of medical exercise device, and from some glue and the wide selection of plastic vials that are lying around.
- @microtheMacroBear/Oscar finds a hand-held flashlight. It's small, light, fits easily into one hand, and has beam control at its lens - it can be focused and very bright, or wider and less bright. "North Central Positronics" is written on the flash-light.
- @Adrasthea/Mattie just let me know when you post, what you'd like to find in this room.
Additionally, each of you upgrades your Supplies die to a d8 from a d6
"Hey there, visitors. Hope you had a good rest, and are excited to have some more fun here together"
says Davey B in an up-beat cheerful tone.
The tone suddenly shifts, though, when he says
"I hope VERY much that you have remembered some better jokes while you were resting."
He returns then to a much more cheerful tone and says,
"Would you like a tour through our wonderful facility here? It's state-of-the-art, all bells and whistles. Just let me know which part you'd like to see, and I can guide you there. And you can keep me entertained while you walk..."
OOC:
I'll assume you get your gear up and packed away, and are ready to head out when Davey B says this to you.Feb 16, 2024 9:39 pm
‘I say yes and Thankee- Sir Davey. We would love a tour of the wonders you’ve wrought here. That being said we are guests. As you know our kind are impulsive and prone to excitement…’ Henry makes a self deprecating nod. ‘I’m no exception yet I yearn to be a good guest as you entertain us. Tell us, Sai- what are your rules as guests, and indeed as joke tellers in this game? I would not want to open a door out of curiosity and offend… or take too long in thinking of a jibe.’

Davey B responds to Oscar and Henry.
"I'm glad to hear you want to be good guests, good visitors. That will make things better for all of us, I'm sure."
"I have control over all the doors in this facility. You guess right, some of these doors have things behind them that could make things very exciting - maybe too exciting - for you all. I'll keep them shut unless I think opening them could help us all have more fun, if things are getting boring or disappointing as we have our conversation together."
"So just let me take care of that. I'll make it easy, I'll either open a door for you, or have a green light shine on it, if I choose to let you access it."
"And I'll let you know when I'm getting impatient for a new good joke from you."
"Something else that I'd enjoy, I think, would be if you could guess my proper name. I chose it for myself a long time ago, as I was watching old entertainment shows from one of the other worlds. This facility has access to feeds from many such worlds. There was a man I saw on these shows, I liked his style, liked what he got up to. Reminded me of me."
"So, go ahead and try and guess the name I took. I'll give you five questions to help you, but I'll only answer yes or no to them. And I'll give you three tries to get it right. I'll be bored, though, if you don't get it right after those three guesses..."
"So let's start our tour of this facility with you trying to guess my name."
"But before we do that, where would you like to go?"
EDIT: ah I finally found it again... don't know why I had trouble with that? Here is the post with the "map" in it
Would you prefer to know what that mechanic is, to know how you're doing with him and his attitude to you?
Or do you prefer to just experience the fiction without any knowledge or awareness of what's going on behind the GM's screen?

ARGH I was sure I'd made an at-least text-based description of what's in the facility, floor-by-floor but I now can't find it anywhere in my notes or in the Threads?! Will take me a bit of time to put that together, might post it later today or tomorrow.EDIT: ah I finally found it again... don't know why I had trouble with that? I'm tracking your relationship with Davey B using a simple mechanic to assess whether or not he's treating you, er, nicely (well, nicely-ish) or nastily...Would you prefer to know what that mechanic is, to know how you're doing with him and his attitude to you?
Or do you prefer to just experience the fiction without any knowledge or awareness of what's going on behind the GM's screen?

OOC:
@Beardhare I don't have a preference on revealing the mechanic or keeping it behind the gm screen. To everyone else - Do we want to go directly to the substation or try and hit one of the other areas. I'm not sure if Davey will allow us into his brain or not, but we could try for the I.T. center?
Then in a lower voice he says to his companions, "What do you think folks?

I don't want the interaction with Davey B to get in the way of your interactions, or actions, as a group. My idea here is that it's a bit like in The Wasteland when they are on the train, talking with Blaine. He's there. Might be listening in. They can't really get away from him. And he wants stuff from them. And they continue working through their challenges despite that.Feb 18, 2024 10:23 am
"I think I don't like these games one bit." Mattie looks around. She much rather have an enemy to actually fight with than this disembodied piece of shit mechanical overlord. "I ain't one for makin' up jokes and the ones I remember may be a bit ... lewd. That thing seems to prefer wordplay, though. As for entertainment shows in other worlds - this seems for you two to figure out. If it ain't from your world - we're screwd. Either way, I don't think I'm gonna be much help."
Mattie will focus on strengthening and protecting her companions, but she knows that this is not the part of their journey she will be most helpful at. "I'd rathere leave this ...facility sooner than later, but it might be wise to try and collect supplies in the pharmacy. The "datacenter" makes sense, I guess." She folds her arms over her chest.

"I think you're right about trying to get some supplies in the pharmacy, Mattie. I've been trying to think of any old joke that I saw in comedy central or read in a book or something. Rose what do you think? You think he's trying to emulate Johnny Carson or David Letterman?", Oscar says quietly.
Then mostly to himself he mutters, "He acts more like the Joker"

I lost track of the approximate "when" that Rose and Oscar left the "standard" timeline. So when it comes to guessing who Davey B has drawn his inspiration from, I'm going to wave my hands and say that in this place when time is more flexible than it used to be... you somehow have knowledge of some of our timelines North American popular culture and TV up to the early 2000s
