Chapter 1: The Commencement

Scrap is bouncing up and down even bfore they get to the dockyard. As they see the ship is is running over with Sioux.. but not up and into it but to run around the outside and satrt inspecting and looking at it with excited squeaks and chitters.

Xiordin lets the 'true starfinders' comment pass without so much as a side-eye. Inwardly, however, he churns.

Those dark thoughts evaporate from his dark heart when he sees the ship. "My first command," he says, and nearly joins Sioux and Scrap in a dance of joy. Well, 'nearly' may be putting a bit too much spice on the matter, but he does walk quicker.

You get on the ship and find your places in the cockpit. Everything is shiny and new and when you fire the engines, they come alive with a purr. It's a basic ship without a lot of flash, but the engineering is as solid as can be. In just a few minutes, you get word from Absalom Station's space traffic control giving you permission to leave the station.

Sioux expertly (for a relative amateur) takes the ship out of port and sets course for the probe. It comes on radar relatively quickly, situated right in the middle of an asteroid field. A moment later, Soryn spots something else: another ship is on course to intercept the probe!

The other ship's transponder, which is on, names it as the "Honorbound", hailing from the Veskarium. It is ablaze on either side with three bright red thrusters reminiscent of the energy blades of a plasma doshko. The other ship has not yet hailed you.
OOC:
A few checks can be made. Only #2 is restricted by starship role:
1. Mysticism or Physical Science for information on the asteroids
2. The science officer can user Computers to scan the asteroids for more information
3. Engineering for info on the ship's thrusters
4. Mysticism for determining any significance to the odd thruster pattern

Honorbound? To do what? Sioux is not convinced of the honors of the Veskarium.
Are we faster than them? She ask the computer to do some calculations

Xiordin settles in the captains chair slouched as if finding the maximum amount of comfort for a long journey. Despite his relaxed posture his eyes sharply focus on the instruments attempting to discern what he can from the Veskarium ships profile. Hells' gate that's a cool effect.

"All right team, shout it out, what can we tell about this Veskarium ship's capabilities?"

Scrap really wants to explore, get into the engines, figure out how everything works.. but she probably shouldn't while they were flying. That could wait till after this mission.

As the other ship appears she tilts her head studying it.

Even if it was a basic ship, Soryn felt good sitting up front with the others, his team, as they prepare for this, their first mission together.

As the probe, then the other starship, comes into view, Soryn quickly begins to scan the asteroids and assess the other vessel.

After a few minutes of no communication, suddenly you receive a message from the Veskarium ship, "This is Yuluzak of the good ship Honorbound. I'm afraid we're both after the same thing here. I'm afraid I can't let you take that probe."

The ship he's commanding is a relatively simple transport vessel, but it does have some amount of firepower. It's likely similar to yours in that respect and a fight, should it come, would come down purely to the skill of the crews involved. At this point, it hasn't made any offensive maneuvers, so it doesn't seem that it's going to just blast you.
Aug 4, 2024 11:44 am
Xiordin looks at the others unsure if anyone has anythimg to contribute before returning the communication.

"Yuluzak, this is Xiordin of the Starfinders vessel Kevolari Venture. You've entered space claimed by my people. We've been ordered to retrieve the probe. In the name of the friendship shared between our two great empires, Honorbound is requested to stand down and back away to a safe distance. If you pursue this, we'll be required to make you look very silly. There is no honor to be found here. "

He winces inwardly at the 'silly' comment.

Well said Xiordin! Souix calls from the pilot seat.
Expect the part about this ship being called "Kevolari Venture" That is the model name. Didn't anyone read the ship's name when we boarded?
She flips to the ship's transponder while she tries to position themselves within optimal firing range. It should have their name.

Ship designation: Starfinder 7E4F1B29

Well we have to come up with a better name than Starfinder 7E4F1B29. I don't think anyone have named her yet.

There's a slight delay before Yuluzak replies, his voice echoing across the bridge, "Excellent speech, Starfinder!" he says with a laugh, "It's too bad that you have no rightful claim to the probe and I know you aren't taking sides between the Pact Worlds and the Veskarium, right? It's in free space right now. I'm a sporting type, though, so how about we duel for it?"

A moment later your ship's computer beeps and a list of rules appears on a display:

Rules of Engagement
• The combatants will not intentionally target the life support systems of their enemy.
• The combatants will abstain from targeting the rear arc — warriors should face the enemy head on.
• Combat is over once an enemy starship is disabled.
• Each captain can surrender at any point

"What do you say?" he asks after giving you a few moments to read through the proposed rules.
OOC:
The Starfinder Society, despite being based on Absalom Station, is technically a neutral faction between the Veskarium and the Pact Worlds. This gives them greater leeway to do their work across the cosmos without causing interstellar incidents, but the lack of a powerful empire backing them sometimes hinders them

We are going for a baptism by fire it seems? Better be a victorious name.

Strands of metal start to form between Suiox and the pilot's chair. Nanobots are forming a seatbelt for her as she is preparing for battle.
Shields - at full!
Weapons - ready!
Scrap! Better get you spanner ready.
Aug 4, 2024 3:45 pm
"Yuluzak, a duel it is. We stand ready to recieve your surrender." He flips off the channel.

"We're in it now, people. Our pride begins here. We cannot start with a failure, too much rides on the faith of Absalom on the Starfinders. For victory, for the Scoured Stars, and for those who haven't yet come home!"
Aug 4, 2024 7:35 pm
"Hear, hear!" Soryn calls. He prepares himself for the fight, his fingers gracefully flying over his control panel, readying for scans and tactical data. "The asteroids can be used to our advantage," he says to his team, "If we allow the Veskarium ship to get close to them and target the asteroids, they should cause significant damage to the other ship."

"Let's get to it, then!" You hear Yuluzak's voice over the comms, clearly excited for the fight ahead.

Your ships stand on opposite sides of the asteroid belt. It's clear that most of the combat will happen in the midst of the belt, meaning you need to be careful of your proximity to them as much as Honorbound does.
OOC:
The engineer can act now. The captain can act at any time. Your ship is the blue one. Their ship is red on the map.

Xiordin opens a channel. "Bring it Yababushka! You know what I've heard about Vesk gunners? They could only hit a spaceship if it accidentally flies into their firing arc! Ha!"
OOC:
Targeting their gunners with his scathing taunt.

Ugh. Maybe I shouldn't have mispronounced his name.

Scrap easily diverts power to the science station, which allows the scanner to more easily process what it 'sees'.

I'm not really fond of playing hide and seek in this asteroid field, with a ship that is new to me...
There are a few big asteroids clumped together that she moves behind, not to be to exposed in the beginning.
OOC:
I actually have +1 to the pilot check due to the speed and +1 from the maneuverability, but it doesn't change anything.
