Chapter 4D: To acquire an asset

"Repairs, James. Lots of repairs," Corbin shakes his head for a second as the immensity of the work before him settles in. "Go ahead and access the damage reports, divide the work in pairs or individually as efficiency dictates. Repair non-functioning systems first, we'll worry about the functioning but damaged systems after that, anything missing will have to wait for replacement parts."
As they prepared to work, one of the Synths spoke up, its voice tinged with what sounded like curiosity. "Sir, will we be entering hyperspace soon?"

Corbin paused, taken aback by the question. It was rare for Synths to inquire about the ship's regular operations. "We were under the impression that our next jump was imminent," another Synth chimed in.

Postal Authority orbital station, Draco III

Mercer leaned against the sleek metal railing of the observation deck aboard the Draco III Postal Authority Orbital Station, staring out into the vastness of space. It had been a slow day, the hum of activity around them reduced to a mere whisper. But amidst the tranquility, a spark of intrigue ignited within them as they spotted a digital notice on the board.

"Stellar Express Brokerage, Zyronis system," Mercer murmured to themselves, their curiosity piqued. It was a one time job escorting hundreds of tons of Nocturna's Blossom Extract. The prospect of safeguarding a large cargo bound for the binary stars of the Zyronis system, especially one of cultural significance for both Draco and Zyronis, stirred a sense of adventure within them. Moreover, Mercer was currently in between jobs, so it was not like they had a lot of options. They could also sell the 2 tons of clothing that they recently acquired with a huge discount, but Draco III was not the best place to do so.
OOC:
Receive 2 tons of Clothing (Cultural, Low Tech, 1000 credits base price) as a bonus. Other than that, choose a regular starting equipment package or roll for your credits, following regular rules.
"Excuse me," They addressed the receptionist, an android robot stationed behind the desk. Its mechanical eyes blinked as it processed Mercer's presence. "I noticed the advertisement about the security position for the cargo headed to the Zyronis system. Is the position still available?"

The android nodded in acknowledgment, its metallic voice crisp and efficient. "Affirmative. The security position remains open for this one-time assignment with our company. Payment does not include a ticket back to Draco III, but the security officer will receive 200 credits, a Woven body armor and a Spike Thrower upon signing and another 300 credits upon safe delivery of the cargo to its destination. If the cargo is safely delivered, they will also be able to keep the equipment. We are still looking for the tramper to transport that cargo, so we don't have a scheduled date yet. We'll contact the chosen person 12 hours before departure, to prepare them for it and finalize the details. Are you interested?"

Trade Era 1235, Day 138. 08:45 UTC

Celestial Voyager, docked at the postal authority orbital station, Draco III

Hank paced the bridge with a furrowed brow. He was able to recruit Mariella, Valeria signed a mail delivery contract for Englene Station in the Dianreti system in exchange for 1,050 credits and Hank got authorization from the captain to change their policies to always look for freight during their mission.

But their ship's holds were still empty, and so they still needed to find freight to fill them before they reached Altairia. As he reviewed potential routes and cargo listings, his gaze lingered on a blinking advertisement from Stellar Express Brokerage.

"Zyronis system," Hank mused aloud, tapping on the advertisement for more details. It seemed fate had intervened, as Zyronis lay directly in their path to Altairia. Perhaps this was the opportunity they'd been waiting for.

Hank contacted Stellar Express Brokerage to inquire about the advertised cargo. A holographic interface materialized before him, displaying a detailed description of the shipment.

The cargo consists of 300 tons, packaging included, of the extract from a rare flower known as the Nocturna Blossom, originating from the homonymous moon here in the Draco system. It holds significant cultural value for the inhabitants of the Zyronis system. The lot cannot be split and Stellar Express will provide a dedicated security officer as a passenger. They will ensure the safe escort of the cargo, requiring a berth and continuous access to the cargo hold throughout the journey.

For payment and further details, please contact the local Stellar Express Brokerage office.

Corbin shakes his head at the synth's question. "Imminent, no, the only thing that's imminent right now are repairs. There's no way we'd be able to jump with a hole where the shuttle bay used to be. I'm afraid we're stuck here until we get patched up."
OOC:
Corbin makes a note of which synth asked that question, seems strange, especially with the recent events.

@htech, as a side comment, please do not do that color green on a white background again. My eyes still hurt.
Viewing the holographic display, he figures this is a good option, if the price is right. He "clicks" on the Contact "button" in the display to gain a live connection.

A broker appears in the holographic display and says, "How may I help you?"

Hank replies, "I am interested in transporting the Nocturna Blossom freight. What is the offered rate for the transport of the cargo and security detail?"

In addition, he books some time with Mariella to sit down and look through the speculative cargo listed for this system. Some of it actually looks decent, so we will definitely be getting some of that, since we still have 1099.9 (or 1299.9) tons to fill up.

(How long are the repairs going to take? I figure we're kinda abstracting all of that out to a certain extent, but I still want a rough timescale so that I can get my head around how long he has to find his freight and cargo, and if the cargo list is going to refresh during that time.)

"But you powered us from hibernation, sir." - said Kelly - "That's usually when you are about to jump. Are we allowed to work under regular schedules now? Is our free time going to increase as well?"

Wrong GM =) But either way, I didn't know that green was so horrible in the Light Theme. I use the dark one.

Anyway, I edited it to use another green, one that changes depending on your theme.

"We offer 23,000 credits for its transport to Zyronis, including the berthing for a security officer. You will need to pay your fuel, provisions and fill some paperwork for our insurance company, of course, but we will handle all taxes, fees and customs duties for that cargo.

If you wanna negotiate non-financial compensations, though, we can reduce that payment and talk about it. Can Stellar Express Brokerage help you somehow?"

With Corbin's skill level, it takes 1 day for each 1,000 repair supplies spent. So... 16 days. No refresh. =)

Roll me 1d10, twice, and let's see what goods you got in that trading table, before we see those bargains and prices.

If you wanna try again, we can increase Friction by 1 for each 1d10 that you wanna reroll. If you want something specific, a special order is +4 Friction.

This is the "base" / non-RP rolls. If you wanna roleplay something with Stellar Express, though, things may be different.

A few side notes to cover ...

The new green text is great! Thank you!

I love the light/dark contract images. Nice choices.

Yeah, the other GM pointed out the mistake, too. It was kinda embarrassing all around for me.

I am not sure what "non-financial compensation" is. Facilitation on other trades/deals? Merchandise instead of money?

If I go by your numbers in the "Commercial Rules" thread, they are rounding the cost down in their favor. I'll still take it because we need it and it is close enough, and it's needed for the meta-game aspect, but they are low-balling us a bit.

And below are the first two die rolls. Let's see what we get before trying rerolls ...

Also, how do we inquire about more general freight? Now that we know where we are going (Zyronis, which is the system I was going to recommend), and once we know what speculation we're going with, we'll want to fill up that hold for Zyronis.

I knew you would check. You can RP saying that, I don't know how Hank would react. And don't worry about the meta-game, I can handle that either way. =)

Just remember that 300 tons is a lot. A Free Trader can't handle that and it's not an usual request. They are probably doing a "bulk discount"

Also, how do we inquire about more general freight?
You post / publish your destination and wait. Or you actively look for more freight by using Trade and/or Connect and we RP that result.

"As for alternatives, we are interested in both speculative cargo and other freight destined for the Zyronis system. Do you have anything available in either category?"
"Sure. Let me check..." - answered the broker - "So, I'm authorized to pay you 15,000 credits and give you an extra 5 tons of Nocturna's Blossom Extract, if you have 305 tons available and are willing to mix credits and merchandise instead of those 23 thousand credits as payment for our freight transport to Zyronis."
OOC:
Trade Good: Nocturna's Blossom Extract
Types: Rare, Agricultural, Cultural
Base prices: 2,000 credits / 1 ton
"We can also look for more freight for a small finder's fee of 5%. How many more tons are we talking about?"
Feb 27, 2024 3:53 pm
"We will take the 15,000 credits and five extra tons of Nocturna's Blossom Extract."
OOC:
There are a couple worlds along the way that are looking for Agricultural and Cultural, so that seems like a good bet, particularly at a discount. I'm in.

And since the speculative cargo thus far seems rather lackluster, that leaves us with freight for the most part. I figure if we can get upwards of 1000 tons of cargo, that's still an influx of 70,000 credits which helps immensely. And it only stays in the hold for this one leg, so we start fresh again after that. That then leaves us with 94.9 tons if we find something worthwhile after all.
Hank politely laughs a bit at the last question and says, "How much do you have? I have a big cargo hold. I am looking for upwards of 1000 tons."
OOC:
If I am reading this correctly, for non-hazardous cargo, we're looking at 75K for 1000 tons for a two-hex trip. Take out their 5% fee, and that's still 71.25K. We do 5 of those and we pay for our semi-annual maintenance. Do 10 of those and we can arm the ship with a plasma gun. :-)

Please let me know if I am missing anything here.
Feb 27, 2024 11:53 pm
OOC:
That's mostly correct. There is just a little detail, that I don't know if you forgot or glossed over. The broker will point out. ;)
"A thousand? Whoa, you have a Cruiser starship! Fantastic, that's not something that we see everyday.

Anyway, the point is that a thousand tons would mean a load worth somewhere between 1 and 20 million credits... We can't trust you with that, at least not without further investigations and guarantees. We would need collateral assets and a certified or licensed crew... We must verify that your ship not only has enough fighters, weapons and armor but also security personnel to repel pirates and boarding parties... We would also need some previous work with our company, among other things.

If you have time, we can go there or at least check out some of these warranties so you can haul more cargo with our involvement. Otherwise, I think you should start small... Or take your own risks with speculative trading. So, what do you think would work better for you?"
OOC:
Side jobs for Stellar Express, getting those certifications/licenses, acquiring other assets to use as guarantees, patrons to finance you or other stuff like that are all side-quests / further adventures. If you wanna go that way, as a group, it can get you that freight.
Feb 28, 2024 12:21 am
Hank replies, "OK, I have time. Also, we are willing to start small. So, 50 or 100 tons? We don't have a problem working to establish credibility. We have a charter we will be doing first, but we will definitely be coming back around. And getting a better idea of what the requirements are will be good. I assume any company in your position will likely have similar requirements."
OOC:
We don't have to fully role-play the explanation of certification and licensing. He can then take that information to the Captain for her input and decision on it. He is going to bring up the need for at least a token weapon system, too.

Instead of just using the space the lifeboats used to take for more cargo, it might be a good idea to stick a weapon in it instead. If we are going to be armed, our eventual goal should be a Plasma Beam. That seems to be the weapon this ship is designed to use. However, there is no way we can currently afford it, and I assume getting those funds will end up being an adventure by itself. Until then we'll have to live with either a Multifocal Laser or a Sandthrower. And affording them will be a problem. The interesting part is that our power production is low enough that we can have one of the following:
- One Multifocal Laser.
- One or Two Sandthrowers.
- One Plasma Beam.
The Plasma Beam is something we'll have to eventually work towards. Maybe we can save up enough to get one before we head into uncharted space. Before then, however, we ought to at least try to get one Sandthrower. It will have a chance against Fighters, wipe out Shuttles, take down Free Merchants, and scratch the paint of a Patrol Boat. They will harm exactly zero military ships, but that's OK because we can't fight them anyway.

Out of curiosity, are there any other weapons in the Laser/Sandthrower range that would be a decent compromise between the two? Looking for something with some punch that won't cost 700K. Maybe something that does 2d4, is AP 10, power 5, size 1 and costs 100K or so? Basically a Laser that has more punch but less penetration? Figure I should ask.
Feb 28, 2024 1:01 am
I can get you another freight with 50 tons of Clothing. It would be standard rates minus our fee. To qualify, you must have at least a weapon in your ship for self defense and have at least 3 qualified security officers as permanent members of your crew. To certify them... - The broker then told Hank the certification process.
OOC:
The certification: They need to be a registered crew member (third parties / helping hands like Douklan and Mariella don't count) and pass some tests. To pass, you need an attack roll of at least 1d20+3 with at least one weapon. That's not the in game requirement, of course, but it's the gist / OOC version of it. Corbin, Erin and Jil fit this bill, I think, but you should get more qualified people to get more cargo... That's something to roleplay in Zyronis or, wink wink, with Peter Morgan.

About the weapon, there is nothing in between, I think. But if you wanna put something better than a Plasma Gun in your trader hull you can, but you probably need starship modding. Pages 108 and 109 of the rulebook. Look for "Power Trunk Streamlining"
Feb 28, 2024 2:36 am
"Thank you for all the explanation. This has been a big help! I will get back with you as quickly as we can."
OOC:
By "a weapon in your ship for self-defense", do you mean a ship weapon, or just that the crew can defend themselves? I'm assuming the latter, even if I think it's important to address the former. If we can get the certification done in 16 17 days, then let's do that while the repairs are happening.

If we could get a Plasma Beam, I'd be thrilled and stop at that. That's actually the desired end goal weapon. But we are a long way before we can afford that 700K. The Plasma Beam would be perfect.

As a step down, the weapon I'd like as a compromise is a Laser (or whatever) that trades some AP for a second damage die. But since that doesn't exist the most reasonable bet is trying to find a single Sandthrower. It is far from ideal, but it should work for our immediate needs.
Feb 28, 2024 11:11 am
OOC:
I meant the latter, but the former is necessary for getting more than 50 tons from them in your next stops. The better you can insure or protect their freight, the more they will give you.
After the business with Stellar Express was concluded (at least for now) Hank gets back to speculative trading.
OOC:
Do you wanna roll for those gravplate and storage hardware prices?
After he finishes looking into it and maybe buying some of those cargo, he goes to Engineering, to check with Corbin how the repairs are going and talk about buying and installing a Sandthrower
