If we're not configuring our own vessel, I am partial to the Miranda-style ships, I think the contemporary would be the Nebula-class, which the Magellan-class seems to be a derivative of. I also do have a fondness for the Excelsior-class, as rickety as they seem to be on screen.

As for names: the USS Soya, the USS Christa McAuliffe, The USS Clarke.

In terms of other officers, who are we missing in major roles? The captain, apparently, and the chief engineer? Do we need a security chief, seeing as Windy has elected to play an ensign..?

To organize this ship selection process a bit and since we have a small consensus on the Nebula / Magellan ...

I submitted Commander Jayce Devar, Ship Counselor to the gamec (although I have a few more things to update to the sheet.) I also added a picture to my post above.

And it appears we have a winner in the Nebula / Magellan class ship.

Names? I actually like @GreyGriffin's suggestion of USS Clarke (or Arthur C Clarke if we want it to sound more distinguished). Or feeling nostalgic --- the USS Hoshi Sato

Also @Qralloq I assume that we will be picking the Mission Profile of the ship?

Mission Profile? Multi Public

Strategic and Diplomatic Operations
Pathfinder and Recon Operations
Technical Test-bed
Tactical Operations
Scientific and Survey Operations
Crisis and Emergency Response
Multirole Explorer

For the sake of any plot elements you have in mind, is there a mission profile you would like the ship to be commissioned under, Qralloq?

You know, I'm happy to let you all decide. What you do decide will impact the scenario I've sketched.

Okay, good to know. Thanks. I put in my two cents in the Mission Profile vote.

A multirole explorer ship, eh? That's doable. And a Nebula fits that bill.

Production Base: ASDB Integration Facility, Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, Mars

Type: Explorer

Accommodation: 750 officers and crew; 130 visiting personnel; 9,800 personal evacuation limit

Power Plant: One 1,500 plus Cochrane warp core feeding two nacelles; one impulse system

Dimensions: Length, 442.23 meters; beam, 318.11 meters; height: 130.43 meters

Mass: 3,309,000 metric tons

Performance: Warp 9.6 for 12 hours (STD); warp 9.9 for 12 hours (UPRTD)

Armament: Eight type-10 phaser emitters; two photon torpedo launchers

I'll get us started tomorrow.

Let's pick a name for the Nebula class ship. I think nine have been suggested.

Caliburn

Perhaps the vote should be multiple answers. Otherwise, we might end up with one vote on each.
I am happy with any of the names above.

GreyGriffin says:
"The safety of the team does take precedence, Commander, of course. That's why I recommend a Danube."
Although I stand by my character's arguments, on a more meta level, the Danube also has enough duty stations that if we do become embroiled in something shipboard, everyone will have a chance to be involved, rather than two people flying and everyone else grabbing the "oh shit" bars and being tossed around in the back.

it wouldn't be star trek with out someone getting tossed around a ship
